Search

The existence of multiple superconducting phases induced by either pressure or magnetic field is one of the most striking features of superconductivity of UTe$_2$, among the many unusual superconducting properties of this system. Here we report thermodynamic measurements of the superconducting phase diagram combining pressure and magnetic fields up to 30 T. We show that the ambient pressure, high-field, superconducting phase evolves continuously with pressure to join the high-pressure, zero-field superconducting phase. This proves that these two phases are one and the same, and must have the same order parameter., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure + supplementary material

A structural orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition was recently discovered in the heavy-fermion compound UTe$_2$ at a pressure $p^*\simeq3-8$~GPa [Honda \textit{et al.}, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. \textbf{92}, 044702 (2023); Huston \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Mat. \textbf{6}, 114801 (2022)]. In the high-pressure tetragonal phase, a phase transition at $T_x=235$~K and a superconducting transition at $T_{sc}=2$~K have been revealed. In this work, we present an electrical-resistivity study of UTe$_2$ in pulsed magnetic fields up to $\mu_0H=58$~T combined with pressures up to $p$ = 6 GPa. The field was applied in a direction tilted by 30~$^\circ$~from \textbf{b} to \textbf{c} in the orthogonal structure, which is identified as the direction \textbf{c} of the tetragonal structure. In the tetragonal phase, the presence of superconductivity is confirmed and signatures of metamagnetic transitions are observed at the fields $\mu_0H_{x1}=24$~T and $\mu_0H_{x2}=34$~T and temperatures smaller than $T_x$. The normal-conducting state of the superconductor UTe$_2$ is studied by entropy analysis for magnetic fields along the $b$-axis, obtained from magnetization using the relation $(\partial M/\partial T)_B=(\partial S/\partial B)_T$. We observe a strong increase in entropy with magnetic field due to metamagnetic fluctuations (spatially uniform, $Q=0$). The field dependence is well described by the Hertz-Millis-Moriya theory for quantum criticality of itinerant metamagnetism. Notably, the lower bound of the quantum-critical region coincides well with the position of the minimum in the superconducting transition temperature $T_c(B)$. Hence, our results suggest that $Q=0$ fluctuations reinforce the superconductivity., Comment: accepted as a Letter in Phys. Rev. B

The discovery of multiple superconducting phases in UTe2 boosted research on correlated-electron physics. This heavy-fermion paramagnet was rapidly identified as a reference compound to study the interplay between magnetism and unconventional superconductivity with multiple degrees of freedom. The proximity to a ferromagnetic quantum phase transition was initially proposed as a driving force to triplet-pairing superconductivity. However, we find here that long-range incommensurate antiferromagnetic order is established under pressure. The propagation vector km = (0.07,0.33,1) of the antiferromagnetic phase is close to a wavevector where antiferromagnetic fluctuations have previously been observed at ambient pressure. These elements support that UTe2 is a nearly-antiferromagnet at ambient pressure. Our work appeals for theories modelling the evolution of the magnetic interactions and electronic properties, driving a correlated paramagnetic regime at ambient pressure to a long-range antiferromagnetic order under pressure. The electrical resistivity of the unconventional superconductor UTe$_2$ shows very anisotropic behavior in the normal state depending on the current direction. In the present paper we show that the maximum in the resistivity $\rho_c$ for current applied along the $c$ axis at $T^{\rm max}_{\rho_c} \approx 14.75$~K follows the minimum in the thermal expansion $T_\alpha^\star$ along $b$ axis. Under a magnetic field applied along the $b$ axis, $T^{\rm max}_{\rho_c}$ can be tracked up to the critical point of the first order metamagnetic transition, which is located near 6~K and 34.5~T. Surprisingly, at the metamagnetic field $H_m$ the resistivity $\rho_c$ shows a steplike decrease while the resistivities $\rho_a$ and $\rho_b$, for current along the $a$ and $b$ axis, respectively, show a steplike increase. Under hydrostatic pressure $T^{\rm max}_{\rho_c}$ and $H_m$ decrease significantly up to the critical pressure $p_c$ at which superconductivity is suppressed and a long range antiferromagnetic order appears. We show that the phase diagram at different pressures can be scaled by $T^{\rm max}_{\rho_c}$ in field and temperature suggesting that this temperature scale is governing the main interactions in the normal state., Comment: accepted in Phys. Influence of metamagnetism on superconductivity is studied for the field along an easy $a$-axis by AC magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in UTe$_2$. The improvement of crystal quality leads to an upward curvature of $T_c$($B$) above 6 T, that results in a largely enhanced upper critical field of 12 T. The entropy analysis also shows a metamagnetic crossover around 6 T. The sharp negative peak in MCE below $T_c$ indicates that the crossover becomes a transition of first-order character in the superconducting state. Our results shows that metamagnetism induces a transition inside the superconducting phase and stabilizes the superconductivity for the field along the easy axis., Comment: Submitted to PRL

The superconducting (SC) phase diagram in uranium ditelluride is explored under magnetic fields ($H$) along the hard magnetic b-axis using a high-quality single crystal with $T_{\rm c} = 2.1$ K. Simultaneous electrical resistivity and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements discern low- and high-field SC (LFSC and HFSC, respectively) phases with contrasting field-angular dependence. Crystal quality increases the upper critical field of the LFSC phase, but the $H^{\ast}$ of $\sim$15 T, at which the HFSC phase appears, is always the same through the various crystals. A phase boundary signature is also observed inside the LFSC phase near $H^{\ast}$, indicating an intermediate SC phase characterized by small flux pinning forces., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures (including the Supplementary Materials, revision 2)

UTe2 is a recently discovered spin-triplet superconductor. One of the characteristic features of UTe2 is a magnetic field (H)-boosted superconductivity above 16 T when H is applied exactly parallel to the b axis. To date, this superconducting (SC) state has not been thoroughly investigated, and the SC properties as well as the spin state of this high-H SC (HHSC) phase are not well understood. In this study, we performed AC magnetic susceptibility and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements and found that, up to 24.8 T, the HHSC state is intrinsic to UTe2 and quite sensitive to the H angle, and that its SC character is different from that in the low-H SC (LHSC) state. The dominant spin component of the spin-triplet pair is along the a axis in the LHSC state but is changed in the HHSC state along the b axis. Multiple unconventional superconducting phases are suspected to be driven by magnetic fluctuations in the heavy-fermion paramagnet UTe$_2$, and a challenge is to identify the signatures of the electronic correlations, including the magnetic fluctuations, in the bulk physical quantities. Here, we investigate thoroughly the anisotropy of the electrical resistivity of UTe$_2$ under intense magnetic fields up to 70~T, for different electrical-current and magnetic-field configurations. Two characteristic temperatures and an anisotropic low-temperature Fermi-liquid-like coefficient $A$, controlled by the electronic correlations, are extracted. Their critical behavior near the metamagnetic transition induced at $\mu_0H_m\simeq35$~T for $\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{b}$ is characterized. Anisotropic scattering processes are evidenced and magnetic fluctuations are proposed to contribute, via a Kondo hybridization, to the electrical resistivity. We have performed precise Hall measurements for the ferrotoroidic candidate material UNi4B. Below Neel temperature TN ~ 20 K (corresponding to the ferrotoroidic transition temperature), a Hall voltage becomes finite even at zero field and changes proportional to the square of current density; by contrast, it is almost zero above TN. Moreover, we have found that a current-induced magnetization estimated from our Hall effect measurements is qualitatively consistent with the previous directly measured value. These results provide strong evidence for a magnetoelectric phenomenon uniquely in ferrotoroidic metals -- a zero-field nonlinear Hall effect resulting from the current-induced magnetization connecting the ferrotoroidal moments., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The novel spin-triplet superconductor candidate UTe2 was discovered only recently at the end of 2018 and attracted enormous attention. We review key experimental and theoretical progress which has been achieved in different laboratories. UTe2 is a heavy-fermion paramagnet, but right after the discovery of superconductivity it has been expected to be close to a ferromagnetic instability showing many similarities to the U-based ferromagnetic superconductors, URhGe and UCoGe. The competition between different types of magnetic interactions and the duality between the local and itinerant character of the 5f Uranium electrons, as well as the shift of the U valence appear as key parameters in the rich phase diagrams discovered recently under extreme conditions like low temperature, high magnetic field, and pressure. We discuss macroscopic and microscopic experiments at low temperature to clarify the normal phase properties at ambient pressure. Special attention will be given to the occurrence of a metamagnetic transition at Hm = 35 T for a magnetic field applied along the hard magnetic axis b. Adding external pressure leads to strong changes in the magnetic and electronic properties with a direct feedback on superconductivity. Attention will be given on the possible evolution of the Fermi surface as a function of magnetic field and pressure. Superconductivity in UTe2 is extremely rich exhibiting various unconventional behaviors which will be highlighted. It shows an exceptionally huge superconducting upper critical field with a re-entrant behavior under magnetic field and the occurrence of multiple superconducting phases in the temperature field, pressure phase diagram. There is evidence for spin-triplet pairing. The different theoretical approaches will be described. The mechanism of unconventional superconductivity, such as high-temperature-cuprate, Fe-based, and heavy-fermion superconductors, has been studied as a central issue in condensed-matter physics. Spin fluctuations, instead of phonons, are considered to be responsible for the formation of Cooper pairs, and many efforts have been made to confirm this mechanism experimentally. Although a qualitative consensus seems to have been obtained, experimental confirmation has not yet been achieved. This is owing to a lack of the quantitative comparison between theory and experiments. Here, we show a semi-quantitative comparison between the superconducting-transition temperature ($T_{\rm SC}$) and spin fluctuations derived from the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment on the ferromagnetic (FM) superconductor UCoGe, in which the FM fluctuations and superconductivity are tunable by external fields. The enhancement and abrupt suppression of $T_{\rm SC}$ by applied fields, as well as the pressure variation of $T_{\rm SC}$ around the FM criticality are well understood by the change in the FM fluctuations on the basis of the single-band spin-triplet theoretical formalism. The present comparisons strongly support the theoretical formalism of spin-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity, particularly in UCoGe., Comment: 10 pages, 8 pages. To be published in Phys. Rev. B

It is unexpected that a spin-glass transition, which generally occurs only in the system with some form of disorder, was observed in the ThCr2Si2-type compound PrAu2Si2 at a temperature of ~3 K. This puzzling phenomenon was later explained based on a novel dynamic frustration model that does not involve static disorder. We present the results of re-verification of the reported spin-glass behaviors by measuring the physical properties of three polycrystalline PrAu2Si2 samples annealed under different conditions. Indeed, in the sample annealed at 827 C for one week, a spin-glass transition does occur at a temperature of Tf=2.8 K as that reported previously in the literature. However, it is newly found that the spin-glass effect is actually more pronounced in the as-cast sample, and almost completely disappears in the well-annealed (at 850 C for 4 weeks) sample. The apparent sample dependence of the magnetic characteristics of PrAu2Si2 is discussed by comparing it with similar phenomena observed in the isomorphic compounds URh2Ge2 and CeAu2Si2. Our experimental results strongly suggest that the spin-glass behavior observed in the as cast and insufficient annealed samples is most likely due to the presence of small amount of crystalline impurities and/or partial site disorder on the Au and Si sublattices, and thus is not the inherent characteristic of ideal ThCr2Si2-type PrAu2Si2. The perfectly ordered PrAu2Si2 should be regarded as a paramagnetic system with obvious crystal-field effects., Comment: 15 pages with 7 pdf figures

The discovery of superconductivity in the heavy-fermion paramagnet UTe$_2$ has attracted a lot of attention, particularly due to the reinforcement of superconductivity near pressure- and magnetic-field-induced magnetic quantum phase transitions. A challenge is now to characterize the effects of combined pressure and magnetic fields applied along variable directions in this strongly anisotropic paramagnet. Here, we present an investigation of the electrical resistivity of UTe$_2$ under pressure up to 3~GPa and pulsed magnetic fields up to 58~T along the hard magnetic crystallographic directions $\mathbf{b}$ and $\mathbf{c}$. We construct three-dimensional phase diagrams and show that, near the critical pressure, a field-enhancement of superconductivity coincides with a boost of the effective mass related to the collapse of metamagnetic and critical fields at the boundaries of the correlated paramagnetic regime and magnetically-ordered phase, respectively. Beyond the critical pressure, field-induced transitions precede the destruction of the magnetically-ordered phase, suggesting an antiferromagnetic nature. By bringing new elements about the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity, our work appeals for microscopic theories describing the anisotropic properties of UTe$_2$ under pressure and magnetic field., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We investigate the spin dynamics in the superconducting phase of UTe$_{2}$ by triple-axis inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal sample. At the wave-vector $\bf{k_1}$=(0, 0.57, 0), where the normal state antiferromagnetic correlations are peaked, a modification of the excitation spectrum is evidenced, on crossing the superconducting transition, with a reduction of the relaxation rate together with the development of an inelastic peak at $\Omega$ $\approx$ 1 meV. The low dimensional nature and the the $a$-axis polarization of the fluctuations, that characterise the normal state, are essentially maintained below $T_{sc}$. The high ratio $\Omega/k_{B}T_{sc}$ $\approx$ 7.2 contrasts with the most common behaviour in heavy fermion superconductors., Comment: 3 figures, 1 table

Inelastic-neutron-scattering measurements were performed on a single crystal of the heavy-fermion paramagnet UTe$_2$ above its superconducting temperature. We confirm the presence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations with the incommensurate wavevector $\mathbf{k}_1=(0,0.57,0)$. A quasielastic signal is found, whose momentum-transfer dependence is compatible with fluctuations of magnetic moments $\mu\parallel\mathbf{a}$, with a sine-wave modulation of wavevector $\mathbf{k}_1$ and in-phase moments on the nearest U atoms. Low dimensionality of the magnetic fluctuations, consequence of the ladder structure, is indicated by weak correlations along the direction $\mathbf{c}$. These fluctuations saturate below the temperature $T_1^*\simeq15$~K, in possible relation with anomalies observed in thermodynamic, electrical-transport and nuclear-magnetic-resonance measurements. The absence or weakness of ferromagnetic fluctuations, in our data collected at temperatures down to 2.1 K and energy transfers from 0.6 to 7.5 meV, is emphasized. We present a comprehensive ultrasound study of the prototypical heavy-fermion material CeRhIn$_5$, examining the origin of the enigmatic 30 T transition. For a field applied at 2$^\circ$ from the $c$ axis, we observed two sharp anomalies in the sound velocity, at $B_m \approx$ 20 T and $B^* \approx$ 30 T, in all the symmetry-breaking ultrasound modes at low temperatures. The lower-field anomaly corresponds to the well-known first-order metamagnetic incommensurate-to-commensurate transition. The higher-field anomaly takes place at 30 T, where an electronic-nematic transition was previously suggested to occur. Both anomalies, observed only within the antiferromagnetic state, are of similar shape, but the corresponding changes of the ultrasound velocity have opposite signs. Based on our experimental results, we suggest that a field-induced magnetic transition from a commensurate to another incommensurate antiferromagnetic state occurs at $B^*$. With further increasing the field angle from the $c$ axis, the anomaly at $B^*$ slowly shifts to higher fields, broadens, and becomes smaller in magnitude. Traced up to 30$^\circ$ from the $c$ axis, it is no longer observed at 40$^\circ$ below 36 T., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures. To be published in Phys. Bev. B

CeRhIn$_5$ is a prototypical antiferromagnetic heavy-fermion compound, whose behavior in a magnetic field is unique. A magnetic field applied in the basal plane of the tetragonal crystal structure induces two additional phase transitions. When the magnetic field is applied along, or close to, the $c$ axis, a new phase characterized by a pronounced in-plane electronic anisotropy emerges at $B^* \approx$ 30 T, well below the critical field, $B_c \simeq$ 50 T, to suppress the antiferromagnetic order. The exact origin of this new phase, originally suggested to be an electronic-nematic state, remains elusive. Here we report low-temperature specific-heat measurements in CeRhIn$_5$ in high static magnetic fields up to 36 T applied along both the $a$ and $c$ axes. For fields applied along the $a$ axis, we confirmed the previously suggested phase diagram, and extended it to higher fields. This allowed us to observe a triple point at $\sim$ 30 T, where the first-order transition from an incommensurate to commensurate magnetic structure merges into the onset of the second-order antiferromagnetic transition. For fields applied along the $c$ axis, we observed a small but distinct anomaly at $B^*$, which we discuss in terms of a possible field-induced transition, probably weakly first-order. We further suggest that the transition corresponds to a change of magnetic structure. We report a comprehensive de Haas--van Alphen (dHvA) study of the heavy-fermion material CeRhIn$_5$ in magnetic fields up to 70~T. Several dHvA frequencies gradually emerge at high fields as a result of magnetic breakdown. Among them is the thermodynamically important $\beta_1$ branch, which has not been observed so far. Comparison of our angule-dependent dHvA spectra with those of the non-$4f$ compound LaRhIn$_5$ and with band-structure calculations evidences that the Ce $4f$ electrons in CeRhIn$_5$ remain localized over the whole field range. This rules out any significant Fermi-surface reconstruction, either at the suggested nematic phase transition at $B^{*}\approx$ 30~T or at the putative quantum critical point at $B_c \simeq$ 50~T. Our results rather demonstrate the robustness of the Fermi surface and the localized nature of the 4$f$ electrons inside and outside of the antiferromagnetic phase., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures + Supplemental Material (5 pages, 10 figures)

Superconductivity induced by a magnetic field near metamagnetism is a striking manifestation of magnetically-mediated superconducting pairing. After being observed in itinerant ferromagnets, this phenomenon was recently reported in the orthorhombic paramagnet UTe$_2$. Under a magnetic field applied along the hard magnetization axis b, superconductivity is reinforced on approaching metamagnetism at $\mu_0H_m$ = 35 T, but it abruptly disappears beyond $H_m$. On the contrary, field-induced superconductivity was reported beyond $\mu_0H_m$ = 40-50 T in a magnetic field tilted by $\simeq25-30\deg$ from b in the (b,c) plane. Here we explore the phase diagram of UTe2 under these two magnetic-field directions. Zero-resistance measurements permit to confirm unambiguously that superconductivity is established beyond Hm in the tilted-field direction. While superconductivity is locked exactly at fields either smaller (for a H || b), or larger (for H tilted by $\simeq27\deg$ from b to c), than Hm, the variations of the Fermi-liquid coefficient in the electrical resistivity and of the residual resistivity are surprisingly similar for the two field directions. The resemblance of the normal states for the two field directions puts constraints for theoretical models of superconductivity and implies that some subtle ingredients must be in play., Comment: 18 pages, 5 Figures, includes Supplementary Information (9 pages, 8 Figures)

We report the magnetic structure of nominally 10% Cd-doped CeIrIn$_5$, CeIr(In$_{0.9}$Cd$_{0.1}$)$_5$, determined by elastic neutron scattering. Magnetic intensity was observed only at the ordering wave vector $Q_{AF} = (1/2,1/2,1/2)$, commensurate with the crystal lattice. A staggered moment of 0.47(3)$\mu_B$ at 1.8 K resides on the Ce ion. The magnetic moments are found to be aligned along the crystallographic $c$ axis. This is further confirmed by magnetic susceptibility data, which suggest the $c$ axis to be the easy magnetic axis. The determined magnetic structure is strikingly different from the incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordering of the closely related compound CeRhIn$_5$, in which the magnetic moments are antiferromagnetically aligned within the tetragonal basal plane., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. We report on low temperature susceptibility and magnetization measurements made on single crystals of the recently discovered heavy-fermion superconductor UTe$_2$ and compare the results with the two ambient pressure ferromagnetic superconductors URhGe and UCoGe. Hysteresis curves in the superconducting phase show a familiar diamond shape superimposed on a large paramagnetic background. The Meissner state was measured by zero field cooling in small fields of a few Oe as well as ac susceptibility measurements in small fields and resulted in 100\% shielding, with a sharp transition. However the field cooling Meissner-Ochsenfeld effect (expulsion of flux) was negligible in fields greater than just a few Oe, but becomes nearly 30\% of the perfect diamagnetic signal when the field was reduced to 0.01~Oe. The critical current due to flux pinning was studied by ac susceptibility techniques. Over the range in fields and temperature of this study, no signature of a ferromagnetic transition could be discerned. The lower critical field $H_{\rm c1}$ has been measured along the three crystalographic axes, and surprisingly, the anisotropy of $H_{\rm c1}$ contradicts that of the upper critical field. We discuss this discrepancy and show that it may provide additional support for a magnetic field-dependent pairing mediated by ferromagnetic fluctuations in UTe$_2$., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, supplemental material included, to appear in Phys. We have investigated the bulk and microscopic properties of the rhombohedral intermediate valence superconductor CeIr$_3$ by employing magnetization, heat capacity, and muon spin rotation and relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements. The magnetic susceptibility indicates bulk superconductivity below $T_\mathrm{C} = 3.1$~K. Heat capacity data also reveal a bulk superconducting transition at $T_\mathrm{C} = 3.1$~K with a second weak anomaly near 1.6~K. At $T_{\mathrm{C}}$, the jump in heat capacity $\Delta C$/$\gamma T_{\mathrm{C}} \sim 1.39(1)$, is slightly less than the BCS weak coupling limit of 1.43. Transverse-field $\mu$SR measurements suggest a fully gapped, isotropic, $s$-wave superconductivity with 2$\Delta(0)/k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{C}} = 3.76(3)$, very close to 3.56, the BCS gap value for weak-coupling superconductors. From the temperature variation of magnetic penetration depth, we have also determined the London penetration depth $\lambda_{\mathrm{L}}(0) = 435(2)$~nm, the carriers' effective mass enhancement $m^{*} = 1.69(1)m_{\mathrm{e}}$ and the superconducting carrier density $n_{\mathrm{s}} = 2.5(1)\times 10^{26}$ carriers m$^{-3}$. The fact that LaIr$_3$, with no $4f$-electrons, and CeIr$_3$ with $4f^{n}$ electrons where $n \le 1$-electron (Ce ion in a valence fluctuating state), both exhibit the same $s$-wave gap symmetry indicates that the physics of these two compounds is governed by the Ir-$d$ band near the Fermi-level, which is in agreement with previous band structure calculations., Comment: 8 pages 4 figures

Multiple superconducting order parameters are extremely rare. Here we show that a very small pressure can induce this phenomenon in the recently discovered heavy fermion superconductor UTe2. This nearly ferromagnetic system shows several intriguing phenomena, including an extraordinary reinforcement of superconductivity in very strong magnetic fields. We find that pressure can tune the system to a more correlated state and probable magnetic order. The superconducting critical temperature is strongly enhanced, reaching almost 3K, a new record for Ce- and U-based heavy fermion superconductors. Most spectacularly under pressure we find a transition within the superconducting state, putting UTe2 among the very rare systems having multiple superconducting phases. UTe2 under pressure is a treasure trove of several of the most fascinating phenomena in unconventional superconductivity and may well be a keystone in their understanding.

We report a high-magnetic-field study of the itinerant ferromagnet URhSi. Magnetization and electrical resistivity were measured under magnetic fields $\mu_0H$ up to 58~T applied along the directions $\mathbf{a}$, $\mathbf{b}$, and $\mathbf{c}$ of the orthorhombic structure and temperatures $T$ ranging from 1.5 to 50 K. For $\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{b}$, pseudo-metamagnetism at $\mu_0H_m\simeq30-40$~T is associated with a broad step in the magnetization and a maximum in the resistivity. We have studied the superconducting properties of LaIr$_3$ with a rhombohedral structure using magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements. The zero-field cooled and field cooled susceptibility measurements exhibit a superconducting transition below $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 2.5 K. Magnetization measurements indicate bulk type-II superconductivity with upper critical field $\mu_0H_{\mathrm{c2}}(0)$ = 3.84 T. Two successive transitions are observed in heat capacity data, one at $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 2.5 K and a second at 1.2 K below $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ whose origin remain unclear. The heat capacity jump reveals $\Delta C$/$\gamma T_{\mathrm{C}} \sim$ 1.0 which is lower than 1.43 expected for BCS weak coupling limit. Transverse field-$\mu$SR measurements reveal a fully gapped $s-$wave superconductivity with 2$\Delta(0)/k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 3.31, which is small compared to BCS value 3.56, suggesting weak coupling superconductivity. Moreover the study of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth estimated using the transverse field-$\mu$SR measurements gives a zero temperature value of the magnetic penetration depth $\lambda_{\mathrm{L}}(0)$ = 386(3) nm, superconducting carrier density $n_{\mathrm{s}}$ = 2.9(1) $\times$10$^{27}$ carriers $m^{-3}$ and the carriers' effective-mass enhancement $m^{*}$ = 1.53(1) $m_{\mathrm{e}}$. Our zero-field-$\mu$SR measurements do not reveal the spontaneous appearance of an internal magnetic field below the transition temperature, which indicates that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state of LaIr$_3$., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Phase transitions and symmetry are intimately linked. Melting of ice, for example, restores translation invariance. The mysterious hidden order (HO) phase of URu$_2$Si$_2$ has, despite relentless research efforts, kept its symmetry breaking element intangible. Here we present a high-resolution x-ray diffraction study of the URu$_2$Si$_2$ crystal structure as a function of hydrostatic pressure. Below a critical pressure threshold $p_c\approx3$ kbar, no tetragonal lattice symmetry breaking is observed even below the HO transition $T_{HO}=17.5$ K. For $p>p_c$, however, a pressure-induced rotational symmetry breaking is identified with an onset temperatures $T_{OR}\sim 100$ K. The emergence of an orthorhombic phase is found and discussed in terms of an electronic nematic order that appears unrelated to the HO, but with possible relevance for the pressure-induced antiferromagnetic (AF) phase. Existing theories describe the HO and AF phases through an adiabatic continuity of a complex order parameter. A polarized electronic Raman scattering study reveals the emergence of symmetry dependence in the electronic Raman response of single crystalline URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ below the Kondo crossover scale $T_K\sim100K$. In particular, the development of a coherent Kondo pseudo-gap predominantly in the E$_g$ channel highlights strong anisotropy in the Kondo physics in URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ that has previously been neglected in theoretical models of this system. A calculation of the Raman vertices demonstrates that the strongest Raman vertex does indeed develop within the E$_g$ channel for interband transitions and reaches a maximum along the diagonals of the Brillouin zone, implying a d-wave-like geometry for the Kondo pseudo-gap. Below the hidden order phase transition at $T_{HO}= 17.5K$, the magnitude of the pseudo-gap is found to be enhanced. Moreover, the anisotropy of the pseudo-gap is similar in form to that proposed for the chiral d-wave (E$_g$) superconducting state that appears below $T_c=1.5K$.

The elastic properties of URu$_2$Si$_2$ in the high-magnetic field region above 40 T, over a wide temperature range from 1.5 to 120 K, were systematically investigated by means of high-frequency ultrasonic measurements. The investigation was performed at high magnetic fields to better investigate the innate bare 5$f$-electron properties, since the unidentified electronic thermodynamic phase of unknown origin, so called `hidden order'(HO) and associated hybridization of conduction and $f$-electron ($c$-$f$ hybridization) are suppressed at high magnetic fields. From the three different transverse modes we find contrasting results; both the $\Gamma_4$(B$_{\rm 2g}$) and $\Gamma_5$(E$_{\rm g}$) symmetry modes $C_{66}$ and $C_{44}$ show elastic softening that is enhanced above 30 T, while the characteristic softening of the $\Gamma_3$(B$_{\rm 1g}$) symmetry mode $(C_{11}-C_{12})/2$ is suppressed in high magnetic fields. These results underscore the presence of a hybridization-driven $\Gamma_3$(B$_{\rm 1g}$) lattice instability in URu$_2$Si$_2$. However, the results from this work cannot be explained by using existing crystalline-electric field (CEF) schemes applied to the quadrupolar susceptibility in a local $5f^2$ configuration. We present accurate electrical resistivity measurements along the two principle crystallographic axes of the pressure-induced heavy-fermion superconductor CeRhIn5 up to 5.63 GPa. For both directions, a valence crossover line is identified in the p-T plane and the extrapolation of this line to zero temperature coincides with the collapse of the magnetic ordering temperature. Furthermore, it is found that the p-T phase diagram of CeRhIn5 in the valence crossover region is very similar to that of CeCu2Si2. We demonstrate a close connection between observed field-induced antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and quantum critical fluctuation (QCF) in the Zn7%-doped heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5. Magnetization, specific heat, and electrical resistivity at low temperatures all show the presence of new field-induced AFM order under the magnetic field B of 5-10 T, whose order parameter is clearly distinguished from the low-field AFM phase observed for B < 5 T and the superconducting phase for B < 3 T. The 4f electronic specific heat divided by the temperature, C_e/T, exhibits -lnT dependence at B~10 T (= B_0), and furthermore, the C_e/T data for B >= B_0 are well scaled by the logarithmic function of B and T: ln[(B-B_0)/T^{2.7}]. These features are quite similar to the scaling behavior found in pure CeCoIn5, strongly suggesting that the field-induced QCF in pure CeCoIn5 originates from the hidden AFM order parameter equivalent to high-field AFM order in Zn7%-doped CeCoIn5., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, to appear in Phys. We report high field de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurements in CeRh$_2$Si$_2$ both below and above the first-order 26 T metamagnetic transition from an antiferromagnetic to a polarized paramagnetic state. The dHvA frequencies observed above the transition are much higher than those observed below, implying a drastic change of the Fermi-surface size. The dHvA frequencies above the transition and their angular dependence are in good agreement with band-structure calculations for LaRh$_2$Si$_2$, which correspond to CeRh$_2$Si$_2$ with localized $f$ electrons. Given that the $f$ electrons are also localized at low fields in CeRh$_2$Si$_2$, the Fermi-surface reconstruction is due to the suppression of antiferromagnetism and the restoration of the crystallographic Brillouin zone rather than the delocalization of the $f$ electrons. This example suggests that the intuitive notation of "small" and "large" Fermi surfaces commonly used for localized and itinerant $f$ electrons, respectively, requires careful consideration, taking into account the modification of the Brillouin zone in the antiferromagnetic state, when interpreting experimental results., Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. We report thermal expansion measurements on a single crystal of the superconducting ferromagnet UCoGe for magnetic fields applied along the main orthorhombic axes. The thermal expansion cell was mounted on a piezo-electric rotator in order to fine-tune the magnetic field angle. The superconducting and magnetic phase diagram has been determined. With our bulk technique we confirm the $S$-shape of the upper-critical field, $B_{c2}$, for $B \parallel b$ and reinforcement of superconductivity above 6 T. At the same time the Curie point shifts towards lower temperatures on increasing the field along the $b$-axis. This lends further support to theoretical proposals of spin-fluctuation mediated reinforcement of superconductivity for $B \parallel b$., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Using novel instrumentation to combine extreme conditions of intense pulsed magnetic field up to 60~T and high pressure up to 4~GPa, we have established the three-dimensional (3D) magnetic field - pressure - temperature phase diagram of a pure stoichiometric heavy-fermion antiferromagnet (CeRh$_2$Si$_2$). We find a temperature- and pressure-dependent decoupling of the critical and pseudo-metamagnetic fields, at the borderlines of antiferromagnetism and strongly-correlated paramagnetism. This 3D phase diagram is representative of a class of heavy-fermion Ising antiferromagnets, where long-range magnetic ordering is decoupled from a maximum in the magnetic susceptibility. The combination of extreme conditions enabled us to characterize different quantum phase transitions, where peculiar quantum critical properties are revealed. URu2Si2 is one of the most enigmatic strongly-correlated-electron systems and offers a fertile testing ground for new concepts in condensed matter science. In spite of >30 years of intense research, no consensus on the order parameter of its low-temperature hidden-order phase exists. A strong magnetic field transforms the hidden order into magnetically-ordered phases, whose order parameter has also been defying experimental observation. Here, thanks to an instrumentation breakthrough in high-field neutron scattering, we identify the field-induced phases of URu2Si2 as a spin-density-wave state with wavevector k1 = (0.6 0 0). The transition to the spin-density wave represents a unique touchstone for understanding the hidden-order phase. We present thermoelectric power and resistivity measurements in the ferromagnet UGe$_2$ as a function of temperature and magnetic field. At low temperature, huge quantum oscillations are observed in the thermoelectric power as a function of the magnetic field applied along the $a$ axis. The frequencies of the extreme orbits are determined and an analysis of the cyclotron masses is performed following different theoretical approaches for quantum oscillations detected in the thermoelectric power. They are compared to those obtained by Shubnikov-de Haas experiments on the same crystal and previous de Haas-van Alphen experiments. The agreement of the different probes confirms thermoelectric power as an excellent probe to extract simultaneously both microscopic and macroscopic information on the Fermi-surface properties. We report high magnetic field measurements of magnetic torque, thermoelectric power (TEP), magnetization, and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect in CeIrIn$_5$ across 28 T, where a metamagnetic transition was suggested in previous studies. The TEP displays two maxima at 28 T and 32 T. Above 28 T, a new, low dHvA frequency with strongly enhanced effective mass emerges, while the highest frequency observed at low field disappears entirely. This suggests a field-induced Lifshitz transition. However, longitudinal magnetization does not show any anomaly up to 33 T, thus ruling out a metamagnetic transition at 28 T., Comment: accepted to Phys. Rev. Lett

We report low-temperature de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurements in magnetic fields up to 35 T of the heavy-fermion superconductor Ce$_2$PdIn$_8$. The comparison of the experimental results with band-structure calculations implies that the 4$f$ electrons are itinerant rather than localized. The cyclotron masses estimated at high field are only moderately enhanced, 8 and 14 $m_0$, but are substantially larger than the corresponding band masses. The observed angular dependence of the dHvA frequencies suggests quasi-two-dimensional Fermi surfaces in agreement with band-structure calculations. However, the deviation from ideal two dimensionality is larger than in CeCoIn$_5$, with which Ce$_2$PdIn$_8$ bears a lot of similarities. This subtle distinction accounts for the different superconducting critical temperatures of the two compounds., Comment: accepted to Phys. Rev. B

We measured the polarized optical conductivity of URu$_2$Si$_2$ from room temperature down to 5 K, covering the Kondo state, the coherent Kondo liquid regime, and the hidden-order phase. The normal state is characterized by an anisotropic behavior between the ab plane and c axis responses. The ab plane optical conductivity is strongly influenced by the formation of the coherent Kondo liquid: a sharp Drude peak develops and a hybridization gap at 12 meV leads to a spectral weight transfer to mid-infrared energies. The c axis conductivity has a different behavior: the Drude peak already exists at 300 K and no particular anomaly or gap signature appears in the coherent Kondo liquid regime. When entering the hidden-order state, both polarizations see a dramatic decrease in the Drude spectral weight and scattering rate, compatible with a loss of about 50 % of the carriers at the Fermi level. At the same time a density-wave like gap appears along both polarizations at about 6.5 meV at 5 K. This gap closes respecting a mean field thermal evolution in the ab plane. Along the c axis it remains roughly constant and it "fills up" rather than closing., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We present thermoelectric power (TEP) studies under pressure and high magnetic field in the antiferromagnet CeRh2Si2 at low temperature. Under magnetic field, large quantum oscillations are observed in the TEP, S(H), in the antiferromagnetic phase. They suddenly disappear when entering in the polarized paramagnetic (PPM) state at Hc pointing out an important reconstruction of the Fermi surface (FS). Under pressure, S/T increases strongly of at low temperature near the critical pressure Pc, where the AF order is suppressed, implying the interplay of a FS change and low energy excitations driven by spin and valence fluctuations. The difference between the TEP signal in the PPM state above Hc and in the paramagnetic state (PM) above Pc can be explained by different FS. Band structure calculations at P = 0 stress that in the AF phase the 4f contribution at the Fermi level (EF) is weak while it is the main contribution in the PM domain. By analogy to previous work on CeRu2Si2, in the PPM phase of CeRh2Si2 the 4f contribution at EF will drop., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures

The ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe has been investigated by high field X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the U-M$_{4,5}$ and Co/Ge-K edges. The analysis of the branching ratio and XMCD at the U-M$_{4,5}$ edges reveals that the U-5$f$ electrons count is close to 3. The orbital ($\sim0.70\,\mu_B$) and spin ($\sim-0.30\,\mu_B$) moments of U at 2.1K and 17T (H//c) have been determined. Their ratio ($\sim-2.3$) suggests a significant delocalization of the 5$f$ electron states. The similar field dependences of the local U/Co and the macroscopic magnetization indicate that the Co moment is induced by the U moment. The XMCD at the Co/Ge-K edges reveal the presence of small Co-4$p$ and Ge-4$p$ orbital moments parallel to the macroscopic magnetization. In addition, the Co-3$d$ moment is estimated to be at most of the order of 0.1$\mu_B$ at 17T. Our results rule out the possibility of an unusual polarisability of the U and Co moments as well as their antiparallel coupling. We conclude that the magnetism which mediates the superconductivity in UCoGe is driven by U., Comment: 4 figures + supplementary material

Thermal conductivity measurements in the superconducting state of the ferromagnet UCoGe were performed at very low temperatures and under magnetic field on samples of different qualities and with the heat current along the three crystallographic axis. This allows to disentangle intrinsic and extrinsic effects, confirm the situation of multigap superconductivity and shed new light on the situation expected or claimed for the gap in these ferromagnetic superconductors, like evidences of absence of "partially gapped" Fermi surfaces., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. We report a comprehensive investigation of the lattice dynamics of URu$_2$Si$_2$ as a function of temperature using Raman scattering, optical conductivity and inelastic neutron scattering measurements as well as theoretical {\it ab initio} calculations. The main effects on the optical phonon modes are related to Kondo physics. The B$_{1g}$ ($\Gamma_3$ symmetry) phonon mode slightly softens below $\sim$100~K, in connection with the previously reported softening of the elastic constant, $C_{11}-C_{12}$, of the same symmetry, both observations suggesting a B$_{1g}$ symmetry-breaking instability in the Kondo regime. Through optical conductivity, we detect clear signatures of strong electron-phonon coupling, with temperature dependent spectral weight and Fano line shape of some phonon modes. Surprisingly, the line shapes of two phonon modes, E$_u$(1) and A$_{2u}$(2), show opposite temperature dependencies. The A$_{2u}$(2) mode loses its Fano shape below 150 K, whereas the E$_u$(1) mode acquires it below 100~K, in the Kondo cross-over regime. This may point out to momentum-dependent Kondo physics. By inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we have drawn the full dispersion of the phonon modes between 300~K and 2~K. No remarkable temperature dependence has been obtained including through the hidden order transition. {\it Ab initio} calculations with the spin-orbit coupling are in good agreement with the data except for a few low energy branches with propagation in the (a,b) plane.

We have performed polarized electronic Raman scattering on URu2Si2 single crystals at low temperature down to 8 K in the hidden order state and under magnetic field up to 10 T. The hidden order state is characterized by a sharp excitation at 1.7 meV and a gap in the electronic continuum below 6.8 meV. Both Raman signatures are of pure A2g symmetry. By comparing the behavior of the Raman sharp excitation and the neutron resonance at Q0=(0,0,1), we provide new evidence, constrained by selection rules of the two probes, that the hidden order state breaks the translational symmetry along the c axis such that Gamma and Z points fold on top of each other. New thermoelectric power (TEP) measurements on prototype heavy-fermion compounds close to magnetic quantum criticality are presented. The highly sensitive technique of TEP is an unique tool to reveal Fermi surface instabilities, referred here as Lifshitz transitions. The first focus is on the Ising CeRu2Si2 series. Doping CeRu2Si2 with Rh produces a decoupling between the first order metamagnetic transition and the pseudo-metamagnetism observed in the pure compound. Comparison is made with the case of YbRh2Si2 which is often considered as the archetype of local quantum criticality by contrast to CeRu2Si2, taken as an example of spin-density wave criticality. Up to now for ferromagnetic materials showing ferromagnetic wings, no simple case appears where the Fermi surface is preserved between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. We present measurements of the resistivity $\rho_{x,x}$ of URu2Si2 high-quality single crystals in pulsed high magnetic fields up to 81~T at a temperature of 1.4~K and up to 60~T at temperatures down to 100~mK. For a field \textbf{H} applied along the magnetic easy-axis \textbf{c}, a strong sample-dependence of the low-temperature resistivity in the hidden-order phase is attributed to a high carrier mobility. The interplay between the magnetic and orbital properties is emphasized by the angle-dependence of the phase diagram, where magnetic transition fields and crossover fields related to the Fermi surface properties follow a 1/$\cos\theta$-law, $\theta$ being the angle between \textbf{H} and \textbf{c}. For $\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{c}$, a crossover defined at a kink of $\rho_{x,x}$, as initially reported in [Shishido et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{102}, 156403 (2009)], is found to be strongly sample-dependent: its characteristic field $\mu_0H^*$ varies from $\simeq20$~T in our best sample with a residual resistivity ratio RRR of $225$ to $\simeq25$~T in a sample with a RRR of $90$. A second crossover is defined at the maximum of $\rho_{x,x}$ at the sample-independent characteristic field $\mu_0H_{\rho,max}^{LT}\simeq30$~T. Fourier analyzes of SdH oscillations show that $H_{\rho,max}^{LT}$ coincides with a sudden modification of the Fermi surface, while $H^*$ lies in a regime where the Fermi surface is smoothly modified. For $\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{a}$, i) no phase transition is observed at low temperature and the system remains in the hidden-order phase up to 81~T, ii) quantum oscillations surviving up to 7~K are related to a new and almost-spherical orbit - for the first time observed here - at the frequency $F_\lambda\simeq1400$~T and associated with a low effective mass $m^*_\lambda=(1\pm0.5)\cdot m_0$, and iii) no Fermi surface modification occurs up to 81~T., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

We report neutron scattering experiment results revealing the nature of the magnetic order occurring in the heavy fermion superconductor Ce0.95Nd0.05CoIn5, a case for which an antiferromagnetic state is stabilized at a temperature below the superconducting transition one. We evidence an incommensurate order and its propagation vector is found to be identical to that of the magnetic field induced antiferromagnetic order occurring in the stoichiometric superconductor CeCoIn5, the so-called Q-phase. The commonality between these two cases suggests that superconductivity is a requirement for the formation of this kind of magnetic order and the proposed mechanism is the enhancement of nesting condition by d-wave order parameter with nodes in the nesting area., Comment: submitted to Phys. KFe2As2 single crystals are studied using specific-heat, high-resolution thermal-expansion, magnetization, and magnetostriction measurements. The magnetization and magnetostriction data provide clear evidence for strong Pauli limiting effects for magnetic fields parallel to the FeAs planes, suggesting that KFe2As2 may be a good candidate to search for the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state. Using standard thermodynamic relations, the uniaxial pressure derivatives of the critical temperature ($T_{c}$), the normal-state Sommerfeld coefficient ($\gamma_{n}$), the normal-state susceptibility ($\chi$), and the thermodynamic critical field ($H_{c}$) are calculated from our data. We find that the close relationship between doping and pressure as found in other Fe-based systems does not hold for KFe2As2.

We report field and temperature dependent measurements of the thermoelectric power (TEP) and the Nernst effect in the itinerant metamagnet UCoAl. The magnetic field is applied along the easy magnetization c-axis in the hexagonal crystal structure. The metamagnetic transition from the paramagnetic phase at zero field to the field induced ferromagnetic (FM) state is of first order at low temperatures and becomes a broad crossover above the critical temperature $T^{\star}_{M} \sim 11$ K. The field-dependence of the TEP reveals that the effective mass of the hole carriers changes significantly at the metamagnetic transition. The TEP experiment reflects the existence of different carrier types in good agreement with band structure calculations and previous Hall effect experiments.
