Search

High-significance evidences of the existence of a high-energy diffuse flux of cosmic neutrinos have emerged in the last decade from several observations by the IceCube Collaboration. The ANTARES neutrino telescope took data for 15 years in the Mediterranean Sea, from 2007 to 2022, and collected a high-purity all-flavour neutrino sample. The search for a diffuse cosmic neutrino signal using this dataset is presented in this article. This final analysis did not provide a statistically significant observation of the cosmic diffuse flux. However, this is converted into limits on the properties of the cosmic neutrino spectrum. In particular, given the sensitivity of the ANTARES neutrino telescope between 1 and 50 TeV, constraints on single-power-law hypotheses are derived for the cosmic diffuse flux below 20 TeV, especially for power-law fits of the IceCube data with spectral index softer than 2.8.

Robots have been successfully deployed in both traditional and novel manufacturing processes. However, they are still difficult to program by non-experts, which limits their accessibility to a wider range of potential users. Programming robots requires expertise in both robotics and the specific manufacturing process in which they are applied. Robot programs created offline often lack parameters that represent relevant manufacturing skills when executing a specific task. These skills encompass aspects like robot orientation and velocity. This paper introduces an intuitive robot programming system designed to capture manufacturing skills from task demonstrations performed by skilled workers. Demonstration data, including orientations and velocities of the working paths, are acquired using a magnetic tracking system fixed to the tools used by the worker. Positional data are extracted from CAD/CAM. Robot path poses are transformed into Cartesian space and validated in simulation, subsequently leading to the generation of robot programs. PathML, an AutomationML-based syntax, integrates robot and manufacturing data across the heterogeneous elements and stages of the manufacturing systems considered. Position calibration in the deep sea is typically done by means of acoustic multilateration using three or more acoustic emitters installed at known positions. Rather than using hydrophones as receivers that are exposed to the ambient pressure, the sound signals can be coupled to piezo ceramics glued to the inside of existing containers for electronics or measuring instruments of a deep sea infrastructure. The ANTARES neutrino telescope operated from 2006 until 2022 in the Mediterranean Sea at a depth exceeding 2000m. It comprised nearly 900 glass spheres with 432mm diameter and 15mm thickness, equipped with photomultiplier tubes to detect Cherenkov light from tracks of charged elementary particles. In an experimental setup within ANTARES, piezo sensors have been glued to the inside of such - otherwise empty - glass spheres. These sensors recorded signals from acoustic emitters with frequencies from 46545 to 60235Hz. Two waves propagating through the glass sphere are found as a result of the excitation by the waves in the water. These can be qualitatively associated with symmetric and asymmetric Lamb-like waves of zeroth order: a fast (early) one with $v_e \approx 5$mm/$\mu$s and a slow (late) one with $v_\ell \approx 2$mm/$\mu$s. Taking these findings into account improves the accuracy of the position calibration. The results can be transferred to the KM3NeT neutrino telescope, currently under construction at multiple sites in the Mediterranean Sea, for which the concept of piezo sensors glued to the inside of glass spheres has been adapted for monitoring the positions of the photomultiplier tubes., Comment: submitted to "Experimental Astronomy"

High-energy neutrinos could be produced in the interaction of charged cosmic rays with matter or radiation surrounding astrophysical sources. To look for transient sources associated with neutrino emission, a follow-up program of neutrino alerts has been operating within the ANTARES Collaboration since 2009. This program, named TAToO, has triggered robotic optical telescopes (MASTER, TAROT, ROTSE and the SVOM ground based telescopes) immediately after the detection of any relevant neutrino candidate and scheduled several observations in the weeks following the detection. A subset of ANTARES events with highest probabilities of being of cosmic origin has also been followed by the Swift and the INTEGRAL satellites, the Murchison Widefield Array radio telescope and the H.E.S.S. high-energy gamma-ray telescope. The results of twelve years of observations are reported. No optical counterpart has been significantly associated with an ANTARES candidate neutrino signal during image analysis. Constraints on transient neutrino emission have been set. In September 2015, ANTARES issued a neutrino alert and during the follow-up, a potential transient counterpart was identified by Swift and MASTER. A multi-wavelength follow-up campaign has allowed to identify the nature of this source and has proven its fortuitous association with the neutrino. Active galaxies, especially blazars, are among the most promising neutrino source candidates. To date, ANTARES searches for these objects considered GeV-TeV $\gamma$-ray bright blazars. Here, a statistically complete radio-bright blazar sample is used as the target for searches of origins of neutrinos collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope over 13 years of operation. The hypothesis of a neutrino-blazar directional correlation is tested by pair counting and by a complementary likelihood-based approach. The resulting post-trial $p$-value is $3.0\%$ ($2.2\sigma$ in the two-sided convention), possibly indicating a correlation. Additionally, a time-dependent analysis is performed to search for temporal clustering of neutrino candidates as a mean of detecting neutrino flares in blazars. None of the investigated sources alone reaches a significant flare detection level. However, the presence of 18 sources with a pre-trial significance above $3\sigma$ indicates a $p=1.4\%$ ($2.5\sigma$ in the two-sided convention) detection of a time-variable neutrino flux. An \textit{a posteriori} investigation reveals an intriguing temporal coincidence of neutrino, radio, and $\gamma$-ray flares of the J0242+1101 blazar at a $p=0.5\%$ ($2.9\sigma$ in the two-sided convention) level. Altogether, the results presented here suggest a possible connection of neutrino candidates detected by the ANTARES telescope with radio-bright blazars.

Since 2015 the LIGO and Virgo interferometers have detected gravitational waves from almost one hundred coalescences of compact objects (black holes and neutron stars). This article presents the results of a search performed with data from the ANTARES telescope to identify neutrino counterparts to the gravitational wave sources detected during the third LIGO/Virgo observing run and reported in the catalogues GWTC-2, GWTC-2.1, and GWTC-3. This search is sensitive to all-sky neutrinos of all flavours and of energies $>100$ GeV, thanks to the inclusion of both track-like events (mainly induced by $\nu_\mu$ charged-current interactions) and shower-like events (induced by other interaction types). Neutrinos are selected if they are detected within $\pm 500$ s from the GW merger and with a reconstructed direction compatible with its sky localisation. No significant excess is found for any of the 80 analysed GW events, and upper limits on the neutrino emission are derived. Using the information from the GW catalogues and assuming isotropic emission, upper limits on the total energy $E_{\rm tot, \nu}$ emitted as neutrinos of all flavours and on the ratio $f_\nu = E_{\rm tot, \nu}/E_{\rm GW}$ between neutrino and GW emissions are also computed. Finally, a stacked analysis of all the 72 binary black hole mergers (respectively the 7 neutron star - black hole merger candidates) has been performed to constrain the typical neutrino emission within this population, leading to the limits: $E_{\rm tot, \nu} < 4.0 \times 10^{53}$ erg and $f_\nu < 0.15$ (respectively, $E_{\rm tot, \nu} < 3.2 \times 10^{53}$ erg and $f_\nu < 0.88$) for $E^{-2}$ spectrum and isotropic emission. Interactions of cosmic ray protons, atomic nuclei, and electrons in the interstellar medium in the inner part of the Milky Way produce a $\gamma$-ray flux from the Galactic Ridge. If the $\gamma$-ray emission is dominated by proton and nuclei interactions, a neutrino flux comparable to the $\gamma$-ray flux is expected from the same sky region. Data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope are used to constrain the neutrino flux from the Galactic Ridge in the 1-100 TeV energy range. Neutrino events reconstructed both as tracks and showers are considered in the analysis and the selection is optimized for the search of an excess in the region $|l| < 30\deg$, $|b| < 2\deg$. The expected background in the search region is estimated using an off-zone region with similar sky coverage. Neutrino signal originating from a power-law spectrum with spectral index ranging from $\Gamma_\nu=1$ to $4$ is simulated in both channels. The observed energy distributions are fitted to constrain the neutrino emission from the Ridge. The energy distributions in the signal region are inconsistent with the background expectation at $\sim 96\%$ confidence level. The mild excess over the background is consistent with a neutrino flux with a power law with a spectral index $2.45^{+0.22}_{-0.34}$ and a flux normalization $dN_\nu/dE_\nu = 4.0^{+2.7}_{-2.0} \times 10^{-16} \text{GeV}^{-1} \text{cm}^{-2} \text{s}^{-1} \text{sr}^{-1}$ at 40 TeV reference energy. Such flux is consistent with the expected neutrino signal if the bulk of the observed $\gamma$-ray flux from the Galactic Ridge originates from interactions of cosmic ray protons and nuclei with a power-law spectrum extending well into the PeV energy range., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

By constantly monitoring at least one complete hemisphere of the sky, neutrino telescopes are well designed to detect neutrinos emitted by transient astrophysical events. Real-time searches with the ANTARES telescope have been performed to look for neutrino candidates coincident with gamma-ray bursts detected by the Swift and Fermi satellites, highenergy neutrino events registered by IceCube, transient events from blazars monitored by HAWC, photon-neutrino coincidences by AMON notices and gravitational wave candidates observed by LIGO/Virgo. By requiring temporal coincidence, this approach increases the sensitivity and the significance of a potential discovery. Thanks to the good angular accuracy of neutrino candidates reconstructed with the ANTARES telescope, a coincident detection can also improve the positioning area of non-well localised triggers such as those detected by gravitational wave interferometers. In the quest for high-energy neutrino sources, the Astrophysical Multimessenger Observatory Network (AMON) has implemented a new search by combining data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory and the Astronomy with a Neutrino Telescope and Abyss environmental RESearch (ANTARES) neutrino telescope. Using the same analysis strategy as in a previous detector combination of HAWC and IceCube data, we perform a search for coincidences in HAWC and ANTARES events that are below the threshold for sending public alerts in each individual detector. Data were collected between July 2015 and February 2020 with a livetime of 4.39 years. Over this time period, 3 coincident events with an estimated false-alarm rate of $< 1$ coincidence per year were found. In this work, a search for nuclearites of strange quark matter by using nine years of ANTARES data taken in the period 2009-2017 is presented. The passage through matter of these particles is simulated %according to the model of de R\'{u}jula and Glashow taking into account a detailed description of the detector response to nuclearites and of the data acquisition conditions. A down-going flux of cosmic nuclearites with Galactic velocities ($\beta = 10^{-3}$) was considered for this study. The mass threshold for detecting these particles at the detector level is \mbox{ $4 \times 10^{13}$ GeV/c$^{2}$}. Upper limits on the nuclearite flux for masses up to $10^{17}$ GeV/c$^{2}$ at the level of $\sim 5 \times 10^{-17}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ sr$^{-1}$ are obtained. These are the first upper limits on nuclearites established with a neutrino telescope and the most stringent ever set for Galactic velocities., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Searches for dark matter (DM) have not provided any solid evidence for the existence of weakly interacting massive particles in the GeV-TeV mass range. Coincidentally, the scale of new physics is being pushed by collider searches well beyond the TeV domain. This situation strongly motivates the exploration of DM masses much larger than a TeV. Secluded scenarios contain a natural way around the unitarity bound on the DM mass, via the early matter domination induced by the mediator of its interactions with the Standard Model. High-energy neutrinos constitute one of the very few direct accesses to energy scales above a few TeV. An indirect search for secluded DM signals has been performed with the ANTARES neutrino telescope using data from 2007 to 2015. Upper limits on the DM annihilation cross section for DM masses up to 6 PeV are presented and discussed.

This work presents a new search for magnetic monopoles using data taken with the ANTARES neutrino telescope over a period of 10 years (January 2008 to December 2017). Compared to previous ANTARES searches, this analysis uses a run-by-run simulation strategy, with a larger exposure as well as a new simulation of magnetic monopoles taking into account the Kasama, Yang and Goldhaber model for their interaction cross-section with matter. No signal compatible with the passage of relativistic magnetic monopoles is observed, and upper limits on the flux of magnetic monopoles with $\beta$ = v/c $\geq$ 0.55, are presented. Solar Atmospheric Neutrinos (SA$\nu$s) are produced by the interaction of cosmic rays with the solar medium. The detection of SA$\nu$s would provide useful information on the composition of primary cosmic rays as well as the solar density. These neutrinos represent an irreducible source of background for indirect searches for dark matter towards the Sun and the measurement of their flux would allow for a better assessment of the uncertainties related to these searches. In this paper we report on the analysis performed, based on an unbinned likelihood maximisation, to search for SA$\nu$s with the ANTARES neutrino telescope. After analysing the data collected over 11 years, no evidence for a solar atmospheric neutrino signal has been found. An upper limit at 90\% confidence level on the flux of solar atmospheric neutrinos has been obtained, equal to 7$\times$$10^{-11}$ [TeV$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$] at E$_\nu =$ 1 TeV for the reference cosmic ray model assumed., Comment: Sections renamed and reorganized as asked by the Journal

For several decades, the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) has been an unsolved question of high-energy astrophysics. One approach for solving this puzzle is to correlate UHECRs with high-energy neutrinos, since neutrinos are a direct probe of hadronic interactions of cosmic rays and are not deflected by magnetic fields. In this paper, we present three different approaches for correlating the arrival directions of neutrinos with the arrival directions of UHECRs. The neutrino data is provided by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and ANTARES, while the UHECR data with energies above $\sim$50 EeV is provided by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array. All experiments provide increased statistics and improved reconstructions with respect to our previous results reported in 2015. The first analysis uses a high-statistics neutrino sample optimized for point-source searches to search for excesses of neutrinos clustering in the vicinity of UHECR directions. The second analysis searches for an excess of UHECRs in the direction of the highest-energy neutrinos. The third analysis searches for an excess of pairs of UHECRs and highest-energy neutrinos on different angular scales. None of the analyses has found a significant excess, and previously reported over-fluctuations are reduced in significance. Non-standard interactions of neutrinos arising in many theories beyond the Standard Model can significantly alter matter effects in atmospheric neutrino propagation through the Earth. In this paper, a search for deviations from the prediction of the standard 3-flavour atmospheric neutrino oscillations using the data taken by the ANTARES neutrino telescope is presented. Ten years of atmospheric neutrino data collected from 2007 to 2016, with reconstructed energies in the range from $\sim$16 GeV to $100$ GeV, have been analysed. A log-likelihood ratio test of the dimensionless coefficients $\varepsilon_{\mu\tau}$ and $\varepsilon_{\tau\tau} - \varepsilon_{\mu\mu}$ does not provide clear evidence of deviations from standard interactions. For normal neutrino mass ordering, the combined fit of both coefficients yields a value 1.7$\sigma$ away from the null result. However, the 68% and 95% confidence level intervals for $\varepsilon_{\mu\tau}$ and $\varepsilon_{\tau\tau} - \varepsilon_{\mu\mu}$, respectively, contain the null value. Best fit values, one standard deviation errors and bounds at the 90% confidence level for these coefficients are given for both normal and inverted mass orderings. The constraint on $\varepsilon_{\mu\tau}$ is among the most stringent to date and it further restrains the strength of possible non-standard interactions in the $\mu - \tau$ sector., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

We develop a novel technique to exploit the extensive data sets provided by underwater neutrino telescopes to gain information on bioluminescence in the deep sea. The passive nature of the telescopes gives us the unique opportunity to infer information on bioluminescent organisms without actively interfering with them. We propose a statistical method that allows us to reconstruct the light emission of individual organisms, as well as their location and movement. A mathematical model is built to describe the measurement process of underwater neutrino telescopes and the signal generation of the biological organisms. The Metric Gaussian Variational Inference algorithm is used to reconstruct the model parameters using photon counts recorded by the neutrino detectors. We apply this method to synthetic data sets and data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope. The telescope is located 40 km off the French coast and fixed to the sea floor at a depth of 2475 m. The runs with synthetic data reveal that we can reliably model the emitted bioluminescent flashes of the organisms. Furthermore, we find that the spatial resolution of the localization of light sources highly depends on the configuration of the telescope. Precise measurements of the efficiencies of the detectors and the attenuation length of the water are crucial to reconstruct the light emission. Finally, the application to ANTARES data reveals the first precise localizations of bioluminescent organisms using neutrino telescope data.

On October 1, 2019, the IceCube Collaboration detected a muon track neutrino with high probability of being of astrophysical origin, IC191001A. After a few hours, the tidal disruption event (TDE) AT2019dsg, observed by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), was indicated as the most likely counterpart of the IceCube track. More recently, the follow-up campaign of the IceCube alerts by ZTF suggested a second TDE, AT2019fdr, as a promising counterpart of another IceCube muon track candidate, IC200530A, detected on May 30, 2020. These are the second and third associations between astrophysical sources and high-energy neutrinos after the compelling identification of the blazar TXS 0506+056. Here, the search for ANTARES neutrinos from the directions of AT2019dsg and AT2019fdr using a time-integrated approach is presented. This letter presents a combined measurement of the energy spectra of atmospheric $\nu_e$ and $\nu_\mu$ in the energy range between $\sim$100 GeV and $\sim$50 TeV with the ANTARES neutrino telescope. The analysis uses 3012 days of detector livetime in the period 2007--2017, and selects 1016 neutrinos interacting in (or close to) the instrumented volume of the detector, yielding shower-like events (mainly from $\nu_e+\overline \nu_e$ charged current plus all neutrino neutral current interactions) and starting track events (mainly from $\nu_\mu + \overline \nu_\mu$ charged current interactions). The contamination by atmospheric muons in the final sample is suppressed at the level of a few per mill by different steps in the selection analysis, including a Boosted Decision Tree classifier. The distribution of reconstructed events is unfolded in terms of electron and muon neutrino fluxes. The derived energy spectra are compared with previous measurements that, above 100 GeV, are limited to experiments in polar ice and, for $\nu_\mu$, to Super-Kamiokande., Comment: Accepted to PLB

Detecting exoplanets in clusters of different ages is a powerful tool for understanding a number of open questions, such as how the occurrence rate of planets depends on stellar metallicity, on mass, or on stellar environment. We present the first results of our HARPS long-term radial velocity (RV) survey which aims to discover exoplanets around intermediate-mass (between ~ 2 and 6 Msun) evolved stars in open clusters. We selected 826 bona fide HARPS observations of 114 giants from an initial list of 29 open clusters and computed the half peak-to-peak variability of the HARPS RV measurements, namely DeltaRV/2, for each target, to search for the best planet-host candidates. We also performed time series analysis for a few targets with enough observations to search for orbital solutions. Although we attempted to rule out the presence of binaries on the basis of previous surveys, we detected 14 new binary candidates in our sample, most of them identified from a comparison between HARPS and CORAVEL data. We also suggest 11 new planet-host candidates based on a relation between the stellar surface gravity and DeltaRV/2. Ten of the candidates have less than 3 Msun, showing evidence of a low planet occurrence rate for massive stars. One of the planet-host candidates and one of the binary candidates show very clear RV periodic variations, allowing us to confirm the discovery of a new planet and to compute the orbital solution for the binary. The planet is IC 4651 9122b, with a minimum mass of msini = 6.3 MJ and a semi-major axis a = 2.0 AU. The binary companion is NGC 5822 201B, with a very low minimum mass of msini = 0.11 Msun and a semi-major axis a = 6.5 AU, which is comparable to the Jupiter distance to the Sun., Comment: Accepted to Astronomy and Astrophysics. 14 pages, 11 figures

(Abridged) The color and luminosity distribution of horizontal branch (HB) stars in globular clusters are sensitive probes of their original helium abundances. However, recent analyses based on visual and near-ultraviolet (UV) CMDs have provided conflicting results. To clarify the situation, we address the optimum ranges of applicability (in terms of the $T_{eff}$ range covered by the HB stars) for visual and near-UV CMDs, as far as application of this HB $Y$ test goes. We consider both Stromgren and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) bandpasses. Our results indicate that the distributions of HB stars in the y vs (b-y) plane can be a reliable indicator of the He content in cool blue HB (BHB) stars, particularly when a differential comparison between blue and red HB stars is carried out in the range $T_{eff}<8300$K. Conversely, we demonstrate that CMDs using the F336W filter have a much less straightforward interpretation at the cool end of the BHB, as the distributions of HB stars in the F336W vs (F336W-F555W) plane are affected by a triple degeneracy effect. In other words, the position of an HB star is exactly the same, for a given chemical composition, for multiple combinations of the parameters $Y$, $M_{HB}$, and age along the HB evolutionary track. Other HST UV filters do not appear to be as severely affected by this degeneracy effect, to which visual bandpasses are also immune. We do find, on the other hand, that such near-UV CMDs can be extremely useful for the hottest stars along the cool BHB end. Based on a reanalysis of the distribution of HB stars in the y vs (b-y) plane, we find that the coolest among the BHB stars in M3 are likely enhanced in helium by $\Delta Y\approx 0.01$, compared with the red HB stars in the same cluster. Using near-UV HST photometry we find evidence of a progressive increase in $Y$ with increasing temperature, reaching $\Delta Y=0.02$ at $T_{eff}=10900$K., Comment: Accepted to be published in A&A. 13 pages, 8 figures, v2

We performed a uniform and detailed abundance analysis of 12 refractory elements (Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Ni, Co, Sc, Mn, and V) for a sample of 257 G- and K-type evolved stars from the CORALIE planet search program. To date, only one of these stars is known to harbor a planetary companion. We aimed to characterize this large sample of evolved stars in terms of chemical abundances and kinematics, thus setting a solid base for further analysis of planetary properties around giant stars. This sample, being homogeneously analyzed, can be used as a comparison sample for other planet-related studies, as well as for different type of studies related to stellar and Galaxy astrophysics. The abundances of the chemical elements were determined using an LTE abundance analysis relative to the Sun, with the spectral synthesis code MOOG and a grid of Kurucz ATLAS9 atmospheres. To separate the Galactic stellar populations both a purely kinematical approach and a chemical method were applied. We confirm the overabundance of Na in giant stars compared to the field FGK dwarfs. This enhancement might have a stellar evolutionary character, but departures from LTE may also produce a similar enhancement. Our chemical separation of stellar populations also suggests a "gap" in metallicity between the thick-disk and high-alpha metal-rich stars, as previously observed in dwarfs sample from HARPS. The present sample, as most of the giant star samples, also suffers from the B - V colour cut-off, which excludes low-log g stars with high metallicities, and high-logg star with low-[Fe/H]. For future studies of planet occurrence dependence on stellar metallicity around these evolved stars we suggest to use a sub-sample of stars in a "cut-rectangle" in the logg - [Fe/H] diagram to overcome the aforementioned issue., Comment: accepted to MNRAS

The study of stellar parameters of planet-hosting stars, such as metallicity and chemical abundances, help us to understand the theory of planet formation and stellar evolution. Here, we present a catalogue of accurate stellar atmospheric parameters and iron abundances for a sample of 257 K and G field evolved stars that are being surveyed for planets using precise radial--velocity measurements as part of the CORALIE programme to search for planets around giants. The analysis was done using a set of high--resolution and high--signal-to-noise Ultraviolet and Visible Echelle Spectrograph spectra. The stellar parameters were derived using Fe I and II ionization and excitation equilibrium methods. To take into account possible effects related to the choice of the lines on the derived parameters, we used three different iron line-list sets in our analysis, and the results differ among themselves by a small factor for most of stars. {For those stars with previous literature parameter estimates, we found very good agreement with our own values.} In the present catalogue we are providing new precise spectroscopic measurements of effective temperature, surface gravity, microturbulence, and metallicity for 190 stars for which it has not been found or published in previous articles., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. We analyzed the host stars of the present sample of confirmed planets detected by Kepler and Kepler Objects of Interest (KOI) to compute new photometric rotation periods and to study the behavior of their angular momentum. Lomb-Scargle periodograms and wavelet maps were computed for 3,807 stars. For 540 of these stars, we were able to detect rotational modulation of the light curves at a significance level of greater than 99%. For 63 of these 540 stars, no rotation measurements were previously available in the literature. According to the published masses and evolutionary tracks of the stars in this sample, the sample is composed of M- to F-type stars (with masses of 0.48-1.53 M$_{\odot}$) with rotation periods that span a range of 2 to 89 days. These periods exhibit an excellent agreement with previously reported (for the stars for which such values are available), and the observed rotational period distribution strongly agrees with theoretical predictions. Furthermore, for the 540 sources considered here, the stellar angular momentum provides an important test of Kraft's relation based on the photometric rotation periods. Finally, this study directly contributes in a direct approach to our understanding of how angular momentum is distributed between the host star and its (detected) planetary system; the role of angular momentum exchange in such systems is an unavoidable piece of the stellar rotation puzzle., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Rotational and radial velocities have been measured for 1589 evolved stars of spectral types F, G and K and luminosity classes IV, III, II and Ib, based on observations carried out with the CORAVEL spectrometers. The present work reports on the discovery of three stars that we have identified to be rotating Sun-like stars, based on rotational modulation signatures inferred from light curves from the CoRoT mission's Public Archives. In our analysis, we performed an initial selection based on rotation period and position in the Period--$T_{\rm eff}$ diagram. This revealed that the stars CoRoT IDs 100746852, 102709980, and 105693572 provide potentially good matches to the Sun with similar rotation period. To refine our analysis, we applied a novel procedure, taking into account the fluctuations of the features associated to photometric modulation at different time intervals and the fractality traces that are present in the light curves of the Sun and of these "New Sun" candidates alike. In this sense, we computed the so-called Hurst exponent for the referred stars, for a sample of fourteen CoRoT stars with sub- and super-solar rotational periods, and for the Sun, itself, in its active and quiet phases. We found that the Hurst exponent can provide a strong discriminant of Sun-like behavior, going beyond what can be achieved with solely the rotation period itself. In particular, we find that CoRoT ID 105693572 is the star that most closely matches the solar rotation properties, as far as the latter's imprints on light curve behavior is concerned. Since 1998, a planet-search program around main sequence stars within 50 pc in the southern hemisphere, is carried out with the CORALIE echelle spectrograph at La Silla Observatory. With an observing time span of more than 14 years, the CORALIE survey is now able to unveil Jovian planets on Jupiter's period domain. This growing period-interval coverage is important regarding to formation and migration models since observational constraints are still weak for periods beyond the ice line. Long-term precise Doppler measurements with the CORALIE echelle spectrograph, together with a few additional observations made with the HARPS spectrograph on the ESO 3.6m telescope, reveal radial velocity signatures of massive planetary companions in long period orbits. In this paper we present seven new planets orbiting HD27631, HD98649, HD106515A, HD166724, HD196067, HD219077, and HD220689 together with the CORALIE orbital parameters for three already known planets around HD10647, HD30562, and HD86226. The period range of the new planetary companions goes from 2200 to 5500 days and covers a mass domain between 1 and 10.5 MJup. Surprisingly, five of them present quite high eccentricities above e>0.57. A pumping scenario by Kozai mechanism may be invoked for HD106515Ab and HD196067b which are both orbiting stars in multiple systems. As the presence of a third massive body can't be inferred from the data of HD98649b, HD166724b, and HD219077b, the origin of the eccentricity of these systems remains unknown. Except for HD10647b, no constraint on the upper mass of the planets is provided by Hipparcos astrometric data. We present a numerical study of the evolution of height distributions (HDs) obtained in interface growth models belonging to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class. The growth is done on an initially flat substrate. The HDs obtained for all investigated models are very well fitted by the theoretically predicted Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) distribution. The first cumulant has a shift that vanishes as $t^{-1/3}$, while the cumulants of order $2\le n\le 4$ converge to GOE as $t^{-2/3}$ or faster, behaviors previously observed in other KPZ systems. These results yield a new evidence for the universality of the GOE distribution in KPZ growth on flat substrates. We investigate the radius distributions (RD) of surfaces obtained with large-scale simulations of radial clusters that belong to the KPZ universality class. For all investigated models, the RDs are given by the Tracy-Widom distribution of the Gaussian unitary ensemble, in agreement with the conjecture of the KPZ universality class for curved surfaces. The quantitative agreement was also confirmed by two-point correlation functions asymptotically given by the covariance of the Airy$_2$ process. We study a generalization of the Wolf-Villain (WV) interface growth model based on a probabilistic growth rule. In the WV model, particles are randomly deposited onto a substrate and subsequently move to a position nearby where the binding is strongest. We introduce a growth probability which is proportional to a power of the number $n_i$ of bindings of the site $i$: $p_i\propto n_i^\nu$. Through extensively simulations, in $(1+1)$-dimensions, we find three behavior depending of the $\nu$ value: {\it i}) if $\nu$ is small, a crossover from the Mullins-Hering to the Edwards-Wilkinson (EW) universality class; {\it ii}) for intermediate values of $\nu$, a crossover from the EW to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class; {\it iii}) and, finally, for large $\nu$ values, the system is always in the KPZ class. In $(2+1)$-dimensions, we obtain three different behaviors: {\it i}) a crossover from the Villain-Lai-Das Sarma to the EW universality class, for small $\nu$ values; {\it ii}) the EW class is always present, for intermediate $\nu$ values; {\it iii}) a deviation from the EW class is observed, for large $\nu$ values., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, published in JSTAT

Context. Signatures of chromospheric activity enhancement have been found for a dozen stars, pointing to a possible star-planet interaction. Nevertheless in the coronal activity regime, there is no conclusive observational evidence for such an interaction. Does star-planet interaction manifest itself only for a few particular cases, without having a major effect on stars with planets in general? Aims. We aim to add additional observational constraints to support or reject the major effects of star-planet interactions in stellar activity, based on CaII chromospheric emission flux. Methods. We performed a statistical analysis of CaII emission flux of stars with planets, as well as a comparison between CaII and X-ray emission fluxes, searching for dependencies on planetary parameters. Results. In the present sample of stars with planets, there are no significant correlations between chromospheric activity indicator log(R'HK) and planetary parameters. In this paper, we study a two-dimensional model for the growth of molecular clusters in superfluid helium at low temperature. In the model, particles of diameter a follow random ballistic moves of length \delta = a-256a. Upon attachment on the cluster surface, particles allow one-step relaxation to the nearest twofold coordinated site. Average coordination numbers of particles show that in the presence of relaxation the screening for incoming particles modifies the microscopic structure of the cluster. These results are in qualitative agreement with experimental aggregation of methane in He droplets, in which large abundance of fully coordinated sites is observed. The average coordination number increases with \delta, showing that screening is relevant when relaxation is present. As the cluster size increases, the corresponding structure clusters changes from a compact to a fractal, typical of ballistic and diffusion limited models, respectively. A scaling ansatz describing the crossover between the two regimes is proposed.

Aggregation of animal cells in culture comprises a series of motility, collision and adhesion processes of basic relevance for tissue engineering, bioseparations, oncology research and \textit{in vitro} drug testing. In the present paper, a cluster-cluster aggregation model with stochastic particle replication and chemotactically driven motility is investigated as a model for the growth of animal cells in culture. The focus is on the scaling laws governing the aggregation kinetics. Our simulations reveal that in the absence of chemotaxy the mean cluster size and the total number of clusters scale in time as stretched exponentials dependent on the particle replication rate. Also, the dynamical cluster size distribution functions are represented by a scaling relation in which the scaling function involves a stretched exponential of the time. The introduction of chemoattraction among the particles leads to distribution functions decaying as power laws with exponents that decrease in time. The fractal dimensions and size distributions of the simulated clusters are qualitatively discussed in terms of those determined experimentally for several normal and tumoral cell lines growing in culture. We analyzed the behavior of the rotational velocity in the parent stars of extrasolar planets. Projected rotational velocity v sin i and angular momentum were combined with stellar and planetary parameters, for a unique sample of 147 stars, amounting to 184 extrasolar planets, including 25 multiple systems. Indeed, for the present working sample we considered only stars with planets detected by the radial-velocity procedure. Our analysis shows that the v sin i distribution of stars with planets along the HR Diagram follows the well established scenario for the rotation of intermediate to low main sequence stars, with a sudden decline in rotation near 1.2Msun . The decline occurs around Teff~ 6000 K, corresponding to the late-F spectral region. A statistical comparison of the distribution of the rotation of stars with planets and a sample of stars without planets indicates that the v sin i distribution for these two families of stars is drawn from the same population distribution function. We also found that the angular momentum of extrasolar planet parent stars follows, at least qualitatively, Kraft's relation. The stars without detected planets show a clear trend of angular momentum deficit compared to the stars with planets, in particular for masses higher than about 1.25 Msun . Stars with the largest mass planets tend to have angular momentum comparable to or higher than the Sun.

We study the continuous absorbing-state phase transition in the contact process on the Voronoi-Delaunay lattice. The Voronoi construction is a natural way to introduce quenched coordination disorder in lattice models. We simulate the disordered system using the quasistationary simulation method and determine its critical exponents and moment ratios. Our results suggest that the critical behavior of the disordered system is unchanged with respect to that on a regular lattice, i.e., that of directed percolation.

We review some computer algorithms for the simulation of off-lattice clusters grown from a seed, with emphasis on the diffusion-limited aggregation, ballistic aggregation and Eden models. Only those methods which can be immediately extended to distinct off-lattice aggregation processes are discussed. The self-affinity of growing systems with radial symmetry, from tumors to grain-grain displacement, has devoted increasing interest in the last decade. In this work, we analyzed features about the interface scaling of these clusters through large scale simulations (up to $3\times 10^7$ particles) of two-dimensional growth processes with special emphasis on the off-lattice Eden model. The central objective is to discuss an important pitfall associated to the evaluation of the growth exponent $\beta$ of these systems. We show that the $\beta$ value depends on the choice of the origin used to determine the interface width. We considered two strategies frequently used. When the width is evaluated in relation to the center of mass (CM) of the border, the exponent obtained for the Eden model was $\beta_{CM}=0.404\pm0.013$, in very good agreement with previous reported values. However, if the border CM is replaced by the initial seed position (a static origin), the exponent $\beta_0=0.333\pm 0.010$, in complete agreement with the KPZ value $\beta_{KPZ}=1/3$, was found. The difference between $\beta_{CM}$ and $\beta_{0}$ was explained through the border CM fluctuations that grow faster than the overall interface fluctuations. Indeed, we show that the exponents $\beta_0$ and $\beta_{CM}$ characterize large and small wavelength fluctuations of the interface, respectively. In this paper, we analyze the scaling properties of a model that has as limiting cases the diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) and the ballistic aggregation (BA) models. This model allows us to control the radial and angular scaling of the patterns, as well as, their gap distributions. The particles added to the cluster can follow either ballistic trajectories, with probability $P_{ba}$, or random ones, with probability $P_{rw}=1-P_{ba}$. The patterns were characterized through several quantities, including those related to the radial and angular scaling. The fractal dimension as a function of $P_{ba}$ continuously increases from $d_f\approx 1.72$ (DLA dimensionality) for $P_{ba}=0$ to $d_f\approx 2$ (BA dimensionality) for $P_{ba}=1$. However, the lacunarity and the active zone width exhibt a distinct behavior: they are convex functions of $P_{ba}$ with a maximum at $P_{ba}\approx1/2$. Through the analysis of the angular correlation function, we found that the difference between the radial and angular exponents decreases continuously with increasing $P_{ba}$ and rapidly vanishes for $P_{ba}>1/2$, in agreement with recent results concerning the asymptotic scaling of DLA clusters., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. accepted for publication on PRE

In a recent paper (Bogoyavlenskiy V A 2002 \JPA \textbf{35} 2533), an algorithm aiming to generate isotropic clusters of the on-lattice diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) model was proposed. The procedure consists of aggregation probabilities proportional to the squared number of occupied sites ($k^2$). In the present work, we analyzed this algorithm using the noise reduced version of the DLA model and large scale simulations. In the noiseless limit, instead of isotropic patterns, a $45^\circ$ ($30^\circ$) rotation in the anisotropy directions of the clusters grown on square (triangular) lattices was observed. A generalized algorithm, in which the aggregation probability is proportional to $k^\nu$, was proposed. The exponent $\nu$ has a nonuniversal critical value $\nu_c$, for which the patterns generated in the noiseless limit exhibit the original (axial) anisotropy for $\nu<\nu_c$ and the rotated one (diagonal) for $\nu>\nu_c$. The values $\nu_c = 1.395\pm0.005$ and $\nu_c = 0.82\pm 0.01$ were found for square and triangular lattices, respectively. Moreover, large scale simulations show that there are a nontrivial relation between noise reduction and anisotropy direction. The case $\nu=2$ (\bogo's rule) is an example where the patterns exhibit the axial anisotropy for small and the diagonal one for large noise reduction., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

In this work, the transition between diffusion-limited and ballistic aggregation models was revisited using a model in which biased random walks simulate the particle trajectories. The bias is controlled by a parameter $\lambda$, which assumes the value $\lambda=0$ (1) for ballistic (diffusion-limited) aggregation model. Patterns growing from a single seed were considered. In order to simulate large clusters, a new efficient algorithm was developed. For $\lambda \ne 0$, the patterns are fractal on the small length scales, but homogeneous on the large ones. We evaluated the mean density of particles $\bar{\rho}$ in the region defined by a circle of radius $r$ centered at the initial seed. As a function of $r$, $\bar{\rho}$ reaches the asymptotic value $\rho_0(\lambda)$ following a power law $\bar{\rho}=\rho_0+Ar^{-\gamma}$ with a universal exponent $\gamma=0.46(2)$, independent of $\lambda$. The asymptotic value has the behavior $\rho_0\sim|1-\lambda|^\beta$, where $\beta= 0.26(1)$. The characteristic crossover length that determines the transition from DLA- to BA-like scaling regimes is given by $\xi\sim|1-\lambda|^{-\nu}$, where $\nu=0.61(1)$, while the cluster mass at the crossover follows a power law $M_\xi\sim|1 -\lambda|^{-\alpha}$, where $\alpha=0.97(2)$. Nowadays, in societies threatened by atomization, selfishness, short-term thinking, and alienation from political life, there is a renewed debate about classical questions concerning the quality of democratic decision-making. In this work a cellular automata (CA) model for the dynamics of free elections based on the social impact theory is proposed. By using computer simulations, power law distributions for the size of electoral clusters and decision time have been obtained. The major role of broadcasted electoral surveys in guiding opinion formation and stabilizing the ``{\it status quo}'' was demonstrated. Furthermore, it was shown that in societies where these surveys are manipulated within the universally accepted statistical error bars, even a majoritary opposition could be hindered from reaching the power through the electoral path., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Granular materials constitute an intermediate state of matter between fluids and solids. Here we investigate the pattern formation when a grain is displaced by another type of grain in a radial Hele-Shaw cell. We show that several morphologies can occur, ranging from rounded to fingered patterns, interconnected by a continuous crossover.
