Communication between humans and robots (or virtual agents) is essential for interaction and often inspired by human communication, which uses gestures, facial expressions, gaze direction, and other explicit and implicit means. This work presents an interaction experiment where humans and virtual agents interact through explicit (gestures, manual entries using mouse and keyboard, voice, sound, and information on screen) and implicit (gaze direction, location, facial expressions, and raise of eyebrows) communication to evaluate the effect of mixed explicit-implicit communication against purely explicit communication. Results obtained using Bayesian parameter estimation show that the number of errors and task execution time did not significantly change when mixed explicit and implicit communications were used, and neither the perceived efficiency of the interaction. In contrast, acceptance, sociability, and transparency of the virtual agent increased when using mixed communication modalities (88.3%, 92%, and 92.9% of the effect size posterior distribution of each variable, respectively, were above the upper limit of the region of practical equivalence). This suggests that task-related measures, such as time, number of errors, and perceived efficiency of the interaction, have not been influenced by the communication type in our particular experiment. We present HyperLoader, a simple approach that combines different parameter-efficient fine-tuning methods in a multi-task setting. To achieve this goal, our model uses a hypernetwork to generate the weights of these modules based on the task, the transformer layer, and its position within this layer. Our method combines the benefits of multi-task learning by capturing the structure of all tasks while reducing the task interference problem by encapsulating the task-specific knowledge in the generated weights and the benefits of combining different parameter-efficient methods to outperform full-fine tuning. We provide empirical evidence that HyperLoader outperforms previous approaches in most datasets and obtains the best average performance across tasks in high-resource and low-resource scenarios.

Designers often create visualizations to achieve specific high-level analytical or communication goals. These goals require people to naturally extract complex, contextualized, and interconnected patterns in data. While limited prior work has studied general high-level interpretation, prevailing perceptual studies of visualization effectiveness primarily focus on isolated, predefined, low-level tasks, such as estimating statistical quantities. This study more holistically explores visualization interpretation to examine the alignment between designers' communicative goals and what their audience sees in a visualization, which we refer to as their comprehension. We found that statistics people effectively estimate from visualizations in classical graphical perception studies may differ from the patterns people intuitively comprehend in a visualization. We conducted a qualitative study on three types of visualizations -- line graphs, bar graphs, and scatterplots -- to investigate the high-level patterns people naturally draw from a visualization. Participants described a series of graphs using natural language and think-aloud protocols. We found that comprehension varies with a range of factors, including graph complexity and data distribution. Specifically, 1) a visualization's stated objective often does not align with people's comprehension, 2) results from traditional experiments may not predict the knowledge people build with a graph, and 3) chart type alone is insufficient to predict the information people extract from a graph. Australian agriculture supplies many horticultural commodities to domestic and international markets; however, food composition data for many commodities are outdated or unavailable. We produced an up-to-date, nationally representative dataset of up to 148 nutrients and related components in 92 Australian-grown fruit (fresh n=39, dried n=6), vegetables (n=43) and nuts (n=4) by replacing outdated data (pre-2000), confirming concentrations of important nutrients and retaining relevant existing data. Primary samples (n = 902) were purchased during peak growing season in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth between June 2021 and May 2022. While new data reflect current growing practices, varieties, climate and analytical methods, few notable differences were found between old and new data where methods of analysis are comparable. The new data will be incorporated into the Australian Food Composition Database, allowing free online access to stakeholders. Vitamin K is emerging as a multi-function vitamin that plays a role in bone, brain and vascular health. Vitamin K composition data remain limited globally and Australia has lacked nationally representative data for vitamin K1 (phylloquinone, PK) in horticultural commodities. Primary samples (n = 927) of 90 different Australian-grown fruit, vegetable and nut commodities were purchased in three Australian cities. We measured PK in duplicate in 95 composite samples using liquid chromatography with electrospray ionisation-tandem mass spectrometry. The greatest mean concentrations of PK were found in kale (565 ug/100 g), baby spinach (255 ug/100 g) and Brussels sprouts (195 ug/100 g). The data contribute to the global collection of vitamin K food composition data. They add to the evidence that PK concentrations vary markedly between geographic regions, supporting development of region-specific datasets for national food composition databases that do not yet contain data for vitamin K., Comment: 22 pages, 2 tables

A complete accounting of nearby objects -- from the highest-mass white dwarf progenitors down to low-mass brown dwarfs -- is now possible, thanks to an almost complete set of trigonometric parallax determinations from Gaia, ground-based surveys, and Spitzer follow-up. We create a census of objects within a Sun-centered sphere of 20-pc radius and check published literature to decompose each binary or higher-order system into its separate components. The result is a volume-limited census of $\sim$3,600 individual star formation products useful in measuring the initial mass function across the stellar ($<8 M_\odot$) and substellar ($\gtrsim 5 M_{Jup}$) regimes. Comparing our resulting initial mass function to previous measurements shows good agreement above 0.8$M_\odot$ and a divergence at lower masses. Our 20-pc space densities are best fit with a quadripartite power law, $\xi(M) = dN/dM \propto M^{-\alpha}$ with long-established values of $\alpha = 2.3$ at high masses ($0.55 < M < 8.00 M_\odot$) and $\alpha = 1.3$ at intermediate masses ($0.22 < M < 0.55 M_\odot$), but at lower masses we find $\alpha = 0.25$ for $0.05 < M <0.22 M_\odot$ and $\alpha = 0.6$ for $0.01 < M < 0.05 M_\odot$. This implies that the rate of production as a function of decreasing mass diminishes in the low-mass star/high-mass brown dwarf regime before increasing again in the low-mass brown dwarf regime. Effective field theory of low-energy exitations-magnons that describes antiferromagnets is mapped into scalar electrodynamics of a charged scalar field interacting with an external electromagnetic potential. In the presence of a constant inhomogeneous external magnetic field the latter problem is technically reduced to the problem of charged-particle creation from the vacuum by an electric potential step (x step). Magnetic moment plays here the role of the electric charge, and magnons and antimagnons differ from each other in the sign of the magnetic moment. In the framework of such a consideration, it is important to take into account the vacuum instability (the Schwinger effect) under the magnon-antimagnon production on magnetic field inhomogeneities (an analog of pair creation from the vacuum by electric-like fields). We demonstrate how to use the strong field QED with x steps developed by the authors (SPG and DMG) to study the magnon-antimagnon pair production on magnetic field inhomogeneities. Characteristics of the vacuum instability obtained for some magnetic steps that allows exact solving the Klein-Gordon equation are presented. In particular, we consider examples of magnetic steps with very sharp field derivatives that correspond to a regularization of the Klein step. In the case of smooth-gradient steps, we describe an universal behavior of the flux density of created magnon pairs. We also note that since the low-energy magnons are bosons with small effective mass, then for the first time maybe the opportunity will arise to observe the Schwinger effect in the case of the Bose statistics, in particular, the bosonic Klein effect in laboratory conditions. We address the problem of the electromagnetic radiation produced by charge distributions in the framework of a semiclassical approach proposed in the work by Bagrov, Gitman, Shishmarev and Farias [J. Synchrotron Rad. (2020). 27, 902-911]. In this approach, currents, generating the radiation are considered classically, while the quantum nature of the radiation is kept exactly. Quantum states of the electromagnetic field are solutions of Schr\"odinger's equation and relevant quantities to the problem are evaluated with the aid of transition probabilities. This construction allows us to introduce the quantum transition time in physical quantities and assess its role in radiation problems by classical currents. We study radiated electromagnetic energies in detail and present a definition for the rate at which radiation is emitted from sources. In calculating the total energy and rate radiated by a pointlike charged particle accelerated by a constant and uniform electric field, we discover that our results are compatible with results obtained by other authors in the framework of the classical radiation theory under an appropriate limit. Extracting relevant urban patterns from multiple data sources can be difficult using classical clustering algorithms since we have to make a suitable setup of the hyperparameters of the algorithms and deal with outliers. It should be addressed correctly to help urban planners in the decision-making process for the further development of a big city. For instance, experts' main interest in criminology is comprehending the relationship between crimes and the socio-economic characteristics at specific georeferenced locations. In addition, the classical clustering algorithms take little notice of the intricate spatial correlations in georeferenced data sources. This paper presents a new approach to detecting the most relevant urban patterns from multiple data sources based on tensor decomposition. Compared to classical methods, the proposed approach's performance is attested to validate the identified patterns' quality. The result indicates that the approach can effectively identify functional patterns to characterize the data set for further analysis in achieving good clustering quality. Furthermore, we developed a generic framework named TensorAnalyzer, where the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed methodology are tested by a set of experiments and a real-world case study showing the relationship between the crime events around schools and students performance and other variables involved in the analysis.

When modeling complex robot systems such as branched robots, whose kinematic structures are a tree, current techniques often require modeling the whole structure from scratch, even when partial models for the branches are available. This paper proposes a systematic modular procedure for the dynamic modeling of branched robots comprising several subsystems, each composed of an arbitrary number of rigid bodies, providing the final dynamic model by reusing previous models of each branch. Unlike previous approaches, the proposed strategy is applicable even if some subsystems are regarded as black boxes, requiring only twists and their time derivatives, and wrenches at the connection points between those subsystems. To help in the model composition, we also propose a weighted directed graph representation where the weights encode the propagation of twists and their time derivatives, and wrenches between the subsystems. A simple linear operation on the graph interconnection matrix provides the dynamics of the whole system. Numerical results using a 24-DoF fixed-base branched robot composed of eight subsystems show that the proposed formalism is as accurate as a state-of-the-art library for robotic dynamic modeling. Additional results using a 30-DoF holonomic branched mobile manipulator composed of three subsystems demonstrate the fidelity of our model to a modern robotics simulator and its capability of dealing with black box subsystems. Scatterplots are among the most widely used visualization techniques. Compelling scatterplot visualizations improve understanding of data by leveraging visual perception to boost awareness when performing specific visual analytic tasks. Design choices in scatterplots, such as graphical encodings or data aspects, can directly impact decision-making quality for low-level tasks like clustering. Hence, constructing frameworks that consider both the perceptions of the visual encodings and the task being performed enables optimizing visualizations to maximize efficacy. In this paper, we propose an automatic tool to optimize the design factors of scatterplots to reveal the most salient cluster structure. Our approach leverages the merge tree data structure to identify the clusters and optimize the choice of subsampling algorithm, sampling rate, marker size, and marker opacity used to generate a scatterplot image. We validate our approach with user and case studies that show it efficiently provides high-quality scatterplot designs from a large parameter space.

Every year we grow more dependent on wearable devices to gather personalized data, such as our movements, heart rate, respiration, etc. To capture this data, devices contain sensors, such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, that are able to measure changes in their surroundings and pass along the information for better informed decisions. Although these sensors should behave similarly in different devices, that is not always the case. In this case study, we analyze accelerometers from three different devices recording the same actions with an aim to determine whether the discrepancies are due to variability within or between devices. We found the most significant variation between devices with different specifications, such as sensitivity and sampling frequency. Nevertheless, variance in the data should be assumed, even if data is gathered from the same person, activity, and type of sensor.

Both policy and research benefit from a better understanding of individuals' jobs. However, as large-scale administrative records are increasingly employed to represent labor market activity, new automatic methods to classify jobs will become necessary. We developed an automatic job offers classifier using a dataset collected from the largest job bank of Mexico known as Bumeran https://www.bumeran.com.mx/ Last visited: 19-01-2022.. We applied machine learning algorithms such as Support Vector Machines, Naive-Bayes, Logistic Regression, Random Forest, and deep learning Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM). Given the current social distance restrictions across the world, most individuals now use social media as their major medium of communication. Millions of people suffering from mental diseases have been isolated due to this, and they are unable to get help in person. They have become more reliant on online venues to express themselves and seek advice on dealing with their mental disorders. According to the World health organization (WHO), approximately 450 million people are affected. Mental illnesses, such as depression, anxiety, etc., are immensely common and have affected an individuals' physical health. Recently Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods have been presented to help mental health providers, including psychiatrists and psychologists, in decision making based on patients' authentic information (e.g., medical records, behavioral data, social media utilization, etc.). In this paper, we develop a recommender system for a game that suggests potential items to players based on their interactive behaviors to maximize revenue for the game provider. Our approach is built on a reinforcement learning-based technique and is trained on an offline data set that is publicly available on an IEEE Big Data Cup challenge. The limitation of the offline data set and the curse of high dimensionality pose significant obstacles to solving this problem. Our proposed method focuses on improving the total rewards and performance by tackling these main difficulties. More specifically, we utilized sparse PCA to extract important features of user behaviors. Our Q-learning-based system is then trained from the processed offline data set. To exploit all possible information from the provided data set, we cluster user features to different groups and build an independent Q-table for each group. Furthermore, to tackle the challenge of unknown formula for evaluation metrics, we design a metric to self-evaluate our system's performance based on the potential value the game provider might achieve and a small collection of actual evaluation metrics that we obtain from the live scoring environment. Our experiments show that our proposed metric is consistent with the results published by the challenge organizers. We have implemented the proposed training pipeline, and the results show that our method outperforms current state-of-the-art methods in terms of both total rewards and training speed. By addressing the main challenges and leveraging the state-of-the-art techniques, we have achieved the best public leaderboard result in the challenge. Furthermore, our proposed method achieved an estimated score of approximately 20% better and can be trained faster by 30 times than the best of the current state-of-the-art methods.

Recent advancements in constrained kinematic control make it an attractive strategy for controlling robots with arbitrary geometry in challenging tasks. Most current works assume that the robot kinematic model is precise enough for the task at hand. However, with increasing demands and safety requirements in robotic applications, there is a need for a controller that compensates online for kinematic inaccuracies. We propose an adaptive constrained kinematic control strategy based on quadratic programming, which uses partial or complete task-space measurements to compensate online for calibration errors. We study neutral Fermions pair creation with anomalous magnetic moment from the vacuum by time-independent magnetic-field inhomogeneity as an external background. We show that the problem is technically reduced to the problem of charged-particle creation by an electric step, for which the nonperturbative formulation of strong-field QED is used. We consider a magnetic step given by an analytic function and whose inhomogeneity may vary from a "gradual" to a "sharp" field configuration. We obtain corresponding exact solutions of the Dirac-Pauli equation with this field and calculate pertinent quantities characterizing vacuum instability, such as the differential mean number and flux density of pairs created from the vacuum, vacuum fluxes of energy and magnetic moment. We show that the vacuum flux in one direction is formed from fluxes of particles and antiparticles of equal intensity and with the same magnetic moments parallel to the external field. Backreaction to the vacuum fluxes leads to a smoothing of the magnetic-field inhomogeneity. Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) is an inflammatory esophageal disease which is increasing in prevalence. The diagnostic gold-standard involves manual review of a patient's biopsy tissue sample by a clinical pathologist for the presence of 15 or greater eosinophils within a single high-power field (400x magnification). Diagnosing EoE can be a cumbersome process with added difficulty for assessing the severity and progression of disease. We propose an automated approach for quantifying eosinophils using deep image segmentation. A U-Net model and post-processing system are applied to generate eosinophil-based statistics that can diagnose EoE as well as describe disease severity and progression. These statistics are captured in biopsies at the initial EoE diagnosis and are then compared with patient metadata: clinical and treatment phenotypes. The goal is to find linkages that could potentially guide treatment plans for new patients at their initial disease diagnosis. A deep image classification model is further applied to discover features other than eosinophils that can be used to diagnose EoE. We demonstrate that the finiteness of the limiting values of the lower energy levels of a hydrogen atom under an unrestricted growth of the magnetic field, into which this atom is embedded, is achieved already when the vacuum polarization (VP) is calculated in the magnetic field within the approximation of the local action of Euler--Heisenberg. We find that the mechanism for this saturation is different from the one acting, when VP is calculated via the Feynman diagram in the Furry picture. We study the effective potential that appears when the adiabatic (diagonal) approximation is exploited for solving the Schr\"{o}dinger equation for the longitudinal degree of freedom of the electron on the lowest Landau level in the atom. We find that the (effective) potential of a point-like charge remains nonsingular thanks to the growing screening provided by VP. The regularizing length turns out to be $\sqrt{\alpha /3\pi }\lambdabar_{\mathrm{C}}$, where $\lambdabar_{\mathrm{C}}$ is the electron Compton length. The family of effective potentials, labeled by growing values of the magnetic field condenses towards a certain limiting, magnetic-field-independent potential-distance curve. S\~ao Paulo is the largest city in South America, with high criminality rates. The number and type of crimes varies considerably around the city, assuming different patterns depending on urban and social characteristics. In this scenario, enabling tools to explore particular locations of the city is very important for domain experts to understand how urban features as to mobility, passersby behavior, and urban infrastructures can influence the quantity and type of crimes. In present work, we present CrimAnalyzer, a visualization assisted analytic tool that allows users to analyze crime behavior in specific regions of a city, providing new methodologies to identify local crime hotspots and their corresponding patterns over time. CrimAnalyzer has been developed from the demand of experts in criminology and it deals with three major challenges: i) flexibility to explore local regions and understand their crime patterns, ii) Identification of not only prevalent hotspots in terms of number of crimes but also hotspots where crimes are frequent but not in large amount, and iii) understand the dynamic of crime patterns over time. The effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed system are demonstrated by qualitative/quantitative comparisons as well as case studies involving real data and run by domain experts.

AGN disks have been proposed as promising locations for the mergers of stellar mass black hole binaries (BBHs). Much recent work has been done on this merger channel, but the majority focuses on stellar mass black holes (BHs) orbiting in the prograde direction. Little work has been done to examine the impact of retrograde orbiters (ROs) on the formation and mergers of BBHs in AGN disks. Quantifying the retrograde contribution is important, since roughly half of all orbiters should initially be on retrograde orbits when the disk forms. We perform an analytic calculation of the evolution of ROs in an AGN disk. Because this evolution could cause the orbits of ROs to cross those of prograde BBHs, we derive the collision rate between a given RO and a given BBH orbiting in the prograde direction. In the examples given here, ROs in the inner region of the disk experience a rapid decrease in the semimajor axis of their orbits while also becoming highly eccentric in less than a million years. This rapid orbital evolution could lead to extreme mass ratio inspirals detectable by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna. The collision rates of our example ROs with prograde BBHs in the migration trap depend strongly on the volume of the inner radiation-pressure-dominated region which depends on the mass of the supermassive black hole (SMBH). Rates are lowest for larger mass SMBHs, which dominate the AGN merger channel, suggesting that merger rates for this channel may not be significantly altered by ROs., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, accepted to ApJL

This paper presents two approaches to obtain the dynamical equations of mobile manipulators using dual quaternion algebra. The first one is based on a general recursive Newton-Euler formulation and uses twists and wrenches, which are propagated through high-level algebraic operations and works for any type of joints and arbitrary parameterizations. The second approach is based on Gauss's Principle of Least Constraint (GPLC) and includes arbitrary equality constraints. In addition to showing the connections of GPLC with Gibbs-Appell and Kane's equations, we use it to model a nonholonomic mobile manipulator. Perioperative data are essential to investigating the causes of adverse surgical outcomes. In some low to middle income countries, these data are computationally inaccessible due to a lack of digitization of surgical flowsheets. In this paper, we present a deep image segmentation approach using a U-Net architecture that can detect hand-drawn symbols on a flowsheet graph. The segmentation mask outputs are post-processed with techniques unique to each symbol to convert into numeric values. The U-Net method can detect, at the appropriate time intervals, the symbols for heart rate and blood pressure with over 99 percent accuracy. Over 95 percent of the predictions fall within an absolute error of five when compared to the actual value. Image classification is central to the big data revolution in medicine. Improved information processing methods for diagnosis and classification of digital medical images have shown to be successful via deep learning approaches. As this field is explored, there are limitations to the performance of traditional supervised classifiers. This paper outlines an approach that is different from the current medical image classification tasks that view the issue as multi-class classification. We performed a hierarchical classification using our Hierarchical Medical Image classification (HMIC) approach. HMIC uses stacks of deep learning models to give particular comprehension at each level of the clinical picture hierarchy. For testing our performance, we use biopsy of the small bowel images that contain three categories in the parent level (Celiac Disease, Environmental Enteropathy, and histologically normal controls). For the child level, Celiac Disease Severity is classified into 4 classes (I, IIIa, IIIb, and IIIC).

Software development tasks must be performed successfully to achieve software quality and customer satisfaction. Knowing whether software tasks are likely to fail is essential to ensure the success of software projects. Issue Tracking Systems store information of software tasks (issues) and comments, which can be useful to predict issue success; however; almost no research on this topic exists. This work studies the usefulness of textual descriptions of issues and comments for predicting whether issues will be resolved successfully or not. Issues and comments of 588 software projects were extracted from four popular Issue Tracking Systems. Seven machine learning classifiers were trained on 30k issues and more than 120k comments, and more than 6000 experiments were performed to predict the success of three types of issues: bugs, improvements and new features. The results provided evidence that descriptions of issues and comments are useful for predicting issue success with more than 85% of accuracy and precision, and that the predictions of issue success vary over time. Words related to software development were particularly relevant for predicting issue success. The masses, rates, and spins of merging stellar-mass binary black holes (BBHs) detected by aLIGO and Virgo provide challenges to traditional BBH formation and merger scenarios. An active galactic nucleus (AGN) disk provides a promising additional merger channel, because of the powerful influence of the gas that drives orbital evolution, makes encounters dissipative, and leads to migration. Previous work showed that stellar mass black holes (sBHs) in an AGN disk migrate to regions of the disk, known as migration traps, where positive and negative gas torques cancel out, leading to frequent BBH formation. Here we build on that work by simulating the evolution of additional sBHs that enter the inner disk by either migration or inclination reduction. We also examine whether the BBHs formed in our models have retrograde or prograde orbits around their centers of mass with respect to the disk, determining the orientation, relative to the disk, of the spin of the merged BBHs. Orbiters entering the inner disk form BBHs with sBHs on resonant orbits near the migration trap. When these sBHs reach ~80 Msun, they form BBHs with sBHs in the migration trap, which over 10 Myr reach ~1000 Msun. We find 68% of the BBHs in our simulation orbit in the retrograde direction, which implies BBHs in our merger channel will have small dimensionless aligned spins, \chi_eff. Overall, our models produce BBHs that resemble both the majority of BBH mergers detected thus far (0.66 to 120 Gpc^-3 yr^-1 ) and two recent unusual detections, GW190412 (~0.3 Gpc^-3 yr^-1 ) and GW190521 (~0.1 Gpc^-3 yr^-1 )., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, accepted to ApJ

Basic quantum processes (such as particle creation, reflection, and transmission on the corresponding Klein steps) caused by inverse-square electric fields are calculated. These results represent a new example of exact nonperturbative calculations in the framework of QED. The inverse-square electric field is time-independent, inhomogeneous in the $x$-direction, and is inversely proportional to $x$ squared. We find exact solutions of the Dirac and Klein-Gordon equations with such a field and construct corresponding in- and out-states. With the help of these states and using the techniques developed in the framework of QED with $x$-electric potential steps, we calculate characteristics of the vacuum instability, such as differential and total mean numbers of particles created from the vacuum and vacuum-to-vacuum transition probabilities. We study the vacuum instability for two particular backgrounds: for fields widely stretches over the $x$-axis (small-gradient configuration) and for the fields sharply concentrates near the origin $x=0$ (sharp-gradient configuration). We compare exact results with ones calculated numerically. Dual quaternion algebra and its application to robotics have gained considerable interest in the last two decades. Dual quaternions have great geometric appeal and easily capture physical phenomena inside an algebraic framework that is useful for both robot modeling and control. Mathematical objects, such as points, lines, planes, infinite cylinders, spheres, coordinate systems, twists, and wrenches are all well defined as dual quaternions. Therefore, simple operators are used to represent those objects in different frames and operations such as inner products and cross products are used to extract useful geometric relationships between them. Nonetheless, the dual quaternion algebra is not widespread as it could be, mostly because efficient and easy-to-use computational tools are not abundant and usually are restricted to the particular algebra of quaternions. Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) stained Whole Slide Images (WSIs) are utilized for biopsy visualization-based diagnostic and prognostic assessment of diseases. Variation in the H&E staining process across different lab sites can lead to significant variations in biopsy image appearance. These variations introduce an undesirable bias when the slides are examined by pathologists or used for training deep learning models. To reduce this bias, slides need to be translated to a common domain of stain appearance before analysis. We propose a Self-Attentive Adversarial Stain Normalization (SAASN) approach for the normalization of multiple stain appearances to a common domain. This unsupervised generative adversarial approach includes self-attention mechanism for synthesizing images with finer detail while preserving the structural consistency of the biopsy features during translation. This work uses vector field inequalities (VFI) to prevent robot self-collisions and collisions with the workspace. Differently from previous approaches, the method is suitable for both velocity and torque-actuated robots. We propose a new distance function and its corresponding Jacobian in order to generate a VFI to limit the angle between two Pl\"ucker lines. This new VFI is used to prevent both undesired end-effector orientations and violation of joints limits. Celiac Disease (CD) and Environmental Enteropathy (EE) are common causes of malnutrition and adversely impact normal childhood development. CD is an autoimmune disorder that is prevalent worldwide and is caused by an increased sensitivity to gluten. Gluten exposure destructs the small intestinal epithelial barrier, resulting in nutrient mal-absorption and childhood under-nutrition. EE also results in barrier dysfunction but is thought to be caused by an increased vulnerability to infections. EE has been implicated as the predominant cause of under-nutrition, oral vaccine failure, and impaired cognitive development in low-and-middle-income countries. Both conditions require a tissue biopsy for diagnosis, and a major challenge of interpreting clinical biopsy images to differentiate between these gastrointestinal diseases is striking histopathologic overlap between them. In the current study, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify duodenal biopsy images from subjects with CD, EE, and healthy controls. We evaluated the performance of our proposed model using a large cohort containing 1000 biopsy images. Our evaluations show that the proposed model achieves an area under ROC of 0.99, 1.00, and 0.97 for CD, EE, and healthy controls, respectively. These results demonstrate the discriminative power of the proposed model in duodenal biopsies classification.

This paper proposes a robust dual-quaternion based H-infinity task-space kinematic controller for robot manipulators. To address the manipulator liability to modeling errors, uncertainties, exogenous disturbances, and their influence upon the kinematics of the end-effector pose, we adapt H-infinity techniques\textemdash suitable only for additive noises\textemdash to unit dual quaternions. The noise to error attenuation within the H-infinity framework has the additional advantage of casting aside requirements concerning noise distributions, which are significantly hard to characterize within the group of rigid-body transformations. Using dual quaternion algebra, we provide a connection between performance effects over the end-effector trajectory and different sources of uncertainties and disturbances while satisfying attenuation requirements with minimum instantaneous control effort. The result is an easy-to-implement closed-form H-infinity control design criterion. This paper presents a solution based on dual quaternion algebra to the general problem of pose (i.e., position and orientation) consensus for systems composed of multiple rigid-bodies. The dual quaternion algebra is used to model the agents' poses and also in the distributed control laws, making the proposed technique easily applicable to time-varying formation control of general robotic systems. The proposed pose consensus protocol has guaranteed convergence when the interaction among the agents is represented by directed graphs with directed spanning trees, which is a more general result when compared to the literature on formation control. In order to illustrate the proposed pose consensus protocol and its extension to the problem of formation control, we present a numerical simulation with a large number of free-flying agents and also an application of cooperative manipulation by using real mobile manipulators.

In adult laparoscopy, robot-aided surgery is a reality in thousands of operating rooms worldwide, owing to the increased dexterity provided by the robotic tools. Many robots and robot control techniques have been developed to aid in more challenging scenarios, such as pediatric surgery and microsurgery. However, the prevalence of case-specific solutions, particularly those focused on non-redundant robots, reduces the reproducibility of the initial results in more challenging scenarios. In this paper, we propose a general framework for the control of surgical robotics in constrained workspaces under teleoperation, regardless of the robot geometry. Our technique is divided into a slave-side constrained optimization algorithm, which provides virtual fixtures, and with Cartesian impedance on the master side to provide force feedback. In the framework of QED with a strong background, we study particle creation (the Schwinger effect) by a time-dependent inverse square electric field. To this end corresponding exact in- and out-solutions of the Dirac and Klein-Gordon equations are found. We calculate the vacuum-to-vacuum probability and differential and total mean numbers of pairs created from the vacuum. For electric fields varying slowly in time, we present detailed calculations of the Schwinger effect and discuss possible asymptotic regimes. The obtained results are consistent with universal estimates of the particle creation effect by electric fields in the locally constant field approximation. Differential and total quantities corresponding to asymmetrical configurations are also discussed in detail. Finally, the inverse square electric field is used to imitate switching on and off processes. Families of states, differing in the values of their standard deviations at the initial time, are obtained. Robotic assistance allows surgeons to perform dexterous and tremor-free procedures, but robotic aid is still underrepresented in procedures with constrained workspaces, such as deep brain neurosurgery and endonasal surgery. In these procedures, surgeons have restricted vision to areas near the surgical tooltips, which increases the risk of unexpected collisions between the shafts of the instruments and their surroundings. In this work, our vector-field-inequalities method is extended to provide dynamic active-constraints to any number of robots and moving objects sharing the same workspace. The method is evaluated with experiments and simulations in which robot tools have to avoid collisions autonomously and in real-time, in a constrained endonasal surgical environment. Simulations show that with our method the combined trajectory error of two robotic systems is optimal. Experiments using a real robotic system show that the method can autonomously prevent collisions between the moving robots themselves and between the robots and the environment. Moreover, in contrast with early techniques, the proposed method limits the tool approach velocity in the direction of the forbidden zone boundary, guaranteeing a smooth behavior and that tangential velocities will not be disturbed. The proposed method is evaluated in simulations featuring two eight degrees-of-freedom manipulators that were custom-designed for deep neurosurgery. We find exact differential mean numbers of fermions and bosons created from the vacuum due to a composite electric field of special configuration. This configuration imitates a finite switching-on and -off regime and consists of fields that switch-on exponentially from the infinitely remote past, remains constant during a certain interval $T$ and switch-off exponentially to the infinitely remote future. We show that calculations in the slowly varying field approximation are completely predictable in the framework of a locally constant field approximation. In this paper, we address the rigid body pose stabilization problem using dual quaternion formalism. We propose a hybrid control strategy to design a switching control law with hysteresis in such a way that the global asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed and such that the global attractivity of the stabilization pose does not exhibit chattering, a problem that is present in all discontinuous-based feedback controllers. In this paper, we present in detail consistent QED (and scalar QED) calculations of particle creation effects in external electromagnetic field that correspond to three most important exactly solvable cases of t-electric potential steps: Sauter-like electric field, T-constant electric field, and exponentially growing and decaying electric fields. In all these cases, we succeeded to obtain new results, such as calculations in modified configurations of the above mentioned steps and detailed considerations of new limiting cases in already studied before steps. As was recently discovered by us, the information derived from considerations of exactly solvable cases allows one to make some general conclusions about quantum effects in fields for which no closed form solutions of the Dirac (or Klein-Gordon) equation are known. We analyze the creation of fermions and bosons from the vacuum by the exponentially decreasing in time electric field in detail. In our calculations we use QED and follow in main the consideration of particle creation effect in a homogeneous electric field. To this end we find complete sets of exact solutions of the $d$-dimensional Dirac equation in the exponentially decreasing electric field and use them to calculate all the characteristics of the effect, in particular, the total number of created particles and the probability of a vacuum to remain a vacuum. It should be noted that the latter quantities were derived in the case under consideration for the first time. All possible asymptotic regimes are discussed in detail. The changes in the lifetime of a metastable energy level in Er-doped Si nanocrystals in the presence of an external source of colored noise are analyzed for different values of noise intensity and correlation time. Exciton dynamics is simulated by a set of phenomenological rate equations which take into account all the possible phenomena inherent to the energy states of Si nanocrystals and Er$^{3+}$ ions in the host material of Si oxide. The electronic deexcitation is studied by examining the decay of the initial population of the Er atoms in the first excitation level $^4$I$_{13/2}$ through the fluorescence and the cooperative upconversion by energy transfer. Our results show that the deexcitation process of the level $^4$I$_{13/2}$ is slowed down within wide ranges of noise intensity and correlation time. Moreover, a nonmonotonic behavior of the lifetime with the amplitude of the fluctuations is found, characterized by a maximum variation for values of the noise correlation time comparable to the deexcitation time. The indirect influence of the colored noise on the efficiency of the energy transfer upconversion activated from the level $^4$I$_{13/2}$ is also discussed., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Enhanced quantization offers a different classical/quantum connection than that of canonical quantization in which $\hbar >0$ throughout. This result arises when the only allowed Hilbert space vectors allowed in the quantum action functional are coherent states, which leads to the classical action functional augmented by additional terms of order $\hbar$. Canonical coherent states are defined by unitary transformations of a fixed, fiducial vector. While Gaussian vectors are commonly used as fiducial vectors, they cannot be used for all systems. We focus on choosing fiducial vectors for several systems including bosons, fermions, and anyons.

It is demonstrated, owing to the nonlinearity of QED, that a static charge placed in a strong magnetic field\ $B$\ is a magnetic dipole (besides remaining an electric monopole, as well). Its magnetic moment grows linearly with $B$ as long as the latter remains smaller than the characteristic value of $1.2\cdot 10^{13}\unit{G}$ but tends to a constant as $B$ exceeds that value. The force acting on a densely charged object by the dipole magnetic field of a neutron star is estimated.
