In this work, we confront the bound on an ultraviolet cutoff (UV) of a quantum field theory (QFT) proposed by Cohen, Kaplan, and Nelson (CKN) with the latest results of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). The former relates the UV cutoff with an infrared (IR) cutoff of the theory, only using general entropy arguments. Identifying now the IR cutoff with the Hubble horizon yields a time-varying contribution of the vacuum energy to the dark energy density of the universe. We present the first detailed study of an 8-channel $2\times2$ mm$^{2}$ WSi superconducting microwire single photon detector (SMSPD) array exposed to 120 GeV proton beam and 8 GeV electron and pion beam at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility. The SMSPD detection efficiency was measured for the first time for protons, electrons, and pions, enabled by the use of a silicon tracking telescope that provided precise spatial resolution of 30 $\mu$m for 120 GeV protons and 130 $\mu$m for 8 GeV electrons and pions. The result demonstrated consistent detection efficiency across pixels and at different bias currents. Time resolution of 1.15 ns was measured for the first time for SMSPD with proton, electron, and pions, enabled by the use of an MCP-PMT which provided a ps-level reference time stamp. The results presented is the first step towards developing SMSPD array systems optimized for high energy particle detection and identification for future accelerator-based experiments.

Soft robots have many advantages over rigid robots thanks to their compliant and passive nature. However, it is generally challenging to model the dynamics of soft robots due to their high spatial dimensionality, making it difficult to use model-based methods to accurately control soft robots. It often requires direct numerical simulation of partial differential equations to simulate soft robots. This not only requires an accurate numerical model, but also makes soft robot modeling slow and expensive. Deep learning algorithms have shown promises in data-driven modeling of soft robots. However, these algorithms usually require a large amount of data, which are difficult to obtain in either simulation or real-world experiments of soft robots. In this work, we propose KNODE-Cosserat, a framework that combines first-principle physics models and neural ordinary differential equations. We leverage the best from both worlds -- the generalization ability of physics-based models and the fast speed of deep learning methods. We validate our framework in both simulation and real-world experiments. Gravity constrains the range of validity of quantum field theory. As has been pointed out by Cohen, Kaplan, and Nelson (CKN), such effects lead to interdependent ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) cutoffs that may stabilize the dark energy of the universe against quantum corrections, if the IR cutoff is set by the Hubble horizon. As a consequence of the cosmic expansion, this argument implies a time-dependent dark energy density. In this paper we confront this idea with recent data from DESI BAO, Hubble and supernova measurements. Mid-infrared emission features probe the properties of ionized gas, and hot or warm molecular gas. The Orion Bar is a frequently studied photodissociation region (PDR) containing large amounts of gas under these conditions, and was observed with the MIRI IFU aboard JWST as part of the "PDRs4All" program. The resulting IR spectroscopic images of high angular resolution (0.2") reveal a rich observational inventory of mid-IR emission lines, and spatially resolve the substructure of the PDR, with a mosaic cutting perpendicularly across the ionization front and three dissociation fronts. We extracted five spectra that represent the ionized, atomic, and molecular gas layers, and measured the most prominent gas emission lines. An initial analysis summarizes the physical conditions of the gas and the potential of these data. We identified around 100 lines, report an additional 18 lines that remain unidentified, and measured the line intensities and central wavelengths. The H I recombination lines originating from the ionized gas layer bordering the PDR, have intensity ratios that are well matched by emissivity coefficients from H recombination theory, but deviate up to 10% due contamination by He I lines. We report the observed emission lines of various ionization stages of Ne, P, S, Cl, Ar, Fe, and Ni, and show how certain line ratios vary between the five regions. We observe the pure-rotational H$_2$ lines in the vibrational ground state from 0-0 S(1) to 0-0 S(8), and in the first vibrationally excited state from 1-1 S(5) to 1-1 S(9). We derive H$_2$ excitation diagrams, and approximate the excitation with one thermal (~700 K) component representative of an average gas temperature, and one non-thermal component (~2700 K) probing the effect of UV pumping. Most low-mass stars form in stellar clusters that also contain massive stars, which are sources of far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation. Theoretical models predict that this FUV radiation produces photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) on the surfaces of protoplanetary disks around low-mass stars, impacting planet formation within the disks. We report JWST and Atacama Large Millimetere Array observations of a FUV-irradiated protoplanetary disk in the Orion Nebula. Emission lines are detected from the PDR; modelling their kinematics and excitation allows us to constrain the physical conditions within the gas. We quantify the mass-loss rate induced by the FUV irradiation, finding it is sufficient to remove gas from the disk in less than a million years. This is rapid enough to affect giant planet formation in the disk.

(Abridged) We investigate the impact of radiative feedback from massive stars on their natal cloud and focus on the transition from the HII region to the atomic PDR (crossing the ionisation front (IF)), and the subsequent transition to the molecular PDR (crossing the dissociation front (DF)). We use high-resolution near-IR integral field spectroscopic data from NIRSpec on JWST to observe the Orion Bar PDR as part of the PDRs4All JWST Early Release Science Program. The NIRSpec data reveal a forest of lines including, but not limited to, HeI, HI, and CI recombination lines, ionic lines, OI and NI fluorescence lines, Aromatic Infrared Bands (AIBs including aromatic CH, aliphatic CH, and their CD counterparts), CO2 ice, pure rotational and ro-vibrational lines from H2, and ro-vibrational lines HD, CO, and CH+, most of them detected for the first time towards a PDR. Their spatial distribution resolves the H and He ionisation structure in the Huygens region, gives insight into the geometry of the Bar, and confirms the large-scale stratification of PDRs. We observe numerous smaller scale structures whose typical size decreases with distance from Ori C and IR lines from CI, if solely arising from radiative recombination and cascade, reveal very high gas temperatures consistent with the hot irradiated surface of small-scale dense clumps deep inside the PDR. The H2 lines reveal multiple, prominent filaments which exhibit different characteristics. This leaves the impression of a "terraced" transition from the predominantly atomic surface region to the CO-rich molecular zone deeper in. The JWST has captured the most detailed and sharpest infrared images ever taken of the inner region of the Orion Nebula, the nearest massive star formation region, and a prototypical highly irradiated dense photo-dissociation region (PDR). We investigate the fundamental interaction of far-ultraviolet photons with molecular clouds. The transitions across the ionization front (IF), dissociation front (DF), and the molecular cloud are studied at high-angular resolution. These transitions are relevant to understanding the effects of radiative feedback from massive stars and the dominant physical and chemical processes that lead to the IR emission that JWST will detect in many Galactic and extragalactic environments. Due to the proximity of the Orion Nebula and the unprecedented angular resolution of JWST, these data reveal that the molecular cloud borders are hyper structured at small angular scales of 0.1-1" (0.0002-0.002 pc or 40-400 au at 414 pc). A diverse set of features are observed such as ridges, waves, globules and photoevaporated protoplanetary disks. At the PDR atomic to molecular transition, several bright features are detected that are associated with the highly irradiated surroundings of the dense molecular condensations and embedded young star. Toward the Orion Bar PDR, a highly sculpted interface is detected with sharp edges and density increases near the IF and DF. This was predicted by previous modeling studies, but the fronts were unresolved in most tracers. A complex, structured, and folded DF surface was traced by the H2 lines. This dataset was used to revisit the commonly adopted 2D PDR structure of the Orion Bar. JWST provides us with a complete view of the PDR, all the way from the PDR edge to the substructured dense region, and this allowed us to determine, in detail, where the emission of the atomic and molecular lines, aromatic bands, and dust originate.

(Abridged) Mid-infrared observations of photodissociation regions (PDRs) are dominated by strong emission features called aromatic infrared bands (AIBs). The most prominent AIBs are found at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.2 $\mu$m. The most sensitive, highest-resolution infrared spectral imaging data ever taken of the prototypical PDR, the Orion Bar, have been captured by JWST. We provide an inventory of the AIBs found in the Orion Bar, along with mid-IR template spectra from five distinct regions in the Bar: the molecular PDR, the atomic PDR, and the HII region. We use JWST NIRSpec IFU and MIRI MRS observations of the Orion Bar from the JWST Early Release Science Program, PDRs4All (ID: 1288). We extract five template spectra to represent the morphology and environment of the Orion Bar PDR. The superb sensitivity and the spectral and spatial resolution of these JWST observations reveal many details of the AIB emission and enable an improved characterization of their detailed profile shapes and sub-components. While the spectra are dominated by the well-known AIBs at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.2, and 12.7 $\mu$m, a wealth of weaker features and sub-components are present. We report trends in the widths and relative strengths of AIBs across the five template spectra. These trends yield valuable insight into the photochemical evolution of PAHs, such as the evolution responsible for the shift of 11.2 $\mu$m AIB emission from class B$_{11.2}$ in the molecular PDR to class A$_{11.2}$ in the PDR surface layers. This photochemical evolution is driven by the increased importance of FUV processing in the PDR surface layers, resulting in a "weeding out" of the weakest links of the PAH family in these layers. Recently, an increasing interest in UV/IR mixing phenomena has drawn attention to the range of validity of standard quantum field theory. Here we explore the consequences of such a limited range of validity in the context of radiative models for neutrino mass generation. We adopt an argument first published by Cohen, Kaplan and Nelson that gravity implies both UV and IR cutoffs, apply it to the loop integrals describing radiative corrections, and demonstrate that this effect has significant consequences for the parameter space of radiative neutrino mass models., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Recent attacks encouraged public interest in physical security for railways. Knowing about and learning from previous attacks is necessary to secure against them. This paper presents a structured data set of physical attacks against railways. We analyze the data regarding the used means, the railway system's target component, the attacker type, and the geographical distribution of attacks. The results indicate a growing heterogeneity of observed attacks in the recent decade compared to the previous decades and centuries, making protecting railways more complex.

Most of the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) publications, which propose artificial neural networks for Motor Imagery (MI) Electroencephalography (EEG) signal classification, are presented using one of the BCI Competition datasets. However, these databases contain MI EEG data from less than or equal to 10 subjects . In addition, these algorithms usually include only bandpass filtering to reduce noise and increase signal quality. In this article, we compared 5 well-known neural networks (Shallow ConvNet, Deep ConvNet, EEGNet, EEGNet Fusion, MI-EEGNet) using open-access databases with many subjects next to the BCI Competition 4 2a dataset to acquire statistically significant results. We removed artifacts from the EEG using the FASTER algorithm as a signal processing step. Moreover, we investigated whether transfer learning can further improve the classification results on artifact filtered data. We aimed to rank the neural networks; therefore, next to the classification accuracy, we introduced two additional metrics: the accuracy improvement from chance level and the effect of transfer learning. The former can be used with different class-numbered databases, while the latter can highlight neural networks with sufficient generalization abilities. Our metrics showed that the researchers should not avoid Shallow ConvNet and Deep ConvNet because they can perform better than the later published ones from the EEGNet family.

We introduce a combinatorial notion of measures called Rudin-Keisler capturing and use it to give a new construction of elementary substructures around singular cardinals. The new construction is used to establish mutual stationary results at the first successor of singular cardinals $\langle \aleph_{\omega n + 1}\rangle_{n< \omega}$.

We present our Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) System, developed for the BCI discipline of Cybathlon 2020 competition. In the BCI discipline, subjects with tetraplegia are required to control a computer game with mental commands. The absolute of the Fast-Fourier Transformation amplitude was calculated as a feature (FFTabs) from one-second-long electroencephalographic (EEG) signals. To extract the final features, we introduced two methods, namely the Feature Average, where the average of the FFTabs for a specific frequency band was calculated, and the Feature Range, which was based on generating multiple Feature Averages for non-overlapping 2 Hz wide frequency bins. The resulting features were fed to a Support Vector Machine classifier. The algorithms were tested on the PhysioNet database and our dataset, which contains 16 offline experiments recorded with 2 tetraplegic subjects. 27 gameplay trials (out of 59) with our tetraplegic subjects reached the 240-second qualification time limit. The Feature Average of canonical frequency bands (alpha, beta, gamma, and theta) were compared with our suggested range30 and range40 methods. On the PhysioNet dataset, the range40 method combined with an ensemble SVM classifier significantly reached the highest accuracy level (0.4607), with a 4-class classification, and outperformed the state-of-the-art EEGNet., Comment: Submitted to Taylor & Francis in Brain-Computer Interfaces on 28th April 2022. Content delivery networks (CDNs) are the backbone of the Internet and are key in delivering high quality video on demand (VoD), web content and file services to billions of users. CDNs usually consist of hierarchically organized content servers positioned as close to the customers as possible. CDN operators face a significant challenge when analyzing billions of web server and proxy logs generated by their systems. The main objective of this study was to analyze the applicability of various clustering methods in CDN error log analysis. We worked with real-life CDN proxy logs, identified key features included in the logs (e.g., content type, HTTP status code, time-of-day, host) and clustered the log lines corresponding to different host types offering live TV, video on demand, file caching and web content. Our experiments were run on a dataset consisting of proxy logs collected over a 7-day period from a single, physical CDN server running multiple types of services (VoD, live TV, file). The dataset consisted of 2.2 billion log lines. Our analysis showed that CDN error clustering is a viable approach towards identifying recurring errors and improving overall quality of service.

Content delivery networks (CDNs) are key components of high throughput, low latency services on the internet. CDN cache servers have limited storage and bandwidth and implement state-of-the-art cache admission and eviction algorithms to select the most popular and relevant content for the customers served. The aim of this study was to utilize state-of-the-art recommender system techniques for predicting ratings for cache content in CDN. Matrix factorization was used in predicting content popularity which is valuable information in content eviction and content admission algorithms run on CDN edge servers. A custom implemented matrix factorization class and MyMediaLite were utilized. The input CDN logs were received from a European telecommunication service provider. We built a matrix factorization model with that data and utilized grid search to tune its hyper-parameters. Experimental results indicate that there is promise about the proposed approaches and we showed that a low root mean square error value can be achieved on the real-life CDN log data.

Massive stars disrupt their natal molecular cloud material through radiative and mechanical feedback processes. These processes have profound effects on the evolution of interstellar matter in our Galaxy and throughout the Universe, from the era of vigorous star formation at redshifts of 1-3 to the present day. The dominant feedback processes can be probed by observations of the Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) where the far-ultraviolet photons of massive stars create warm regions of gas and dust in the neutral atomic and molecular gas. PDR emission provides a unique tool to study in detail the physical and chemical processes that are relevant for most of the mass in inter- and circumstellar media including diffuse clouds, proto-planetary disks and molecular cloud surfaces, globules, planetary nebulae, and star-forming regions. PDR emission dominates the infrared (IR) spectra of star-forming galaxies. Most of the Galactic and extragalactic observations obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will therefore arise in PDR emission. In this paper we present an Early Release Science program using the MIRI, NIRSpec, and NIRCam instruments dedicated to the observations of an emblematic and nearby PDR: the Orion Bar. These early JWST observations will provide template datasets designed to identify key PDR characteristics in JWST observations. These data will serve to benchmark PDR models and extend them into the JWST era. We also present the Science-Enabling products that we will provide to the community. These template datasets and Science-Enabling products will guide the preparation of future proposals on star-forming regions in our Galaxy and beyond and will facilitate data analysis and interpretation of forthcoming JWST observations., Comment: Submitted to PASP

Consider the property $(\aleph_{\omega + 1},\aleph_{\omega + 2},\ldots) \twoheadrightarrow (\aleph_1,\aleph_2,\ldots)$. Here we will show that this property with the addition of the General Continuum Hypothesis implies projective determinacy. Of particular interest here is the use of a variant covering argument to prove limited instances of mouse reflection. We believe that this approach could find use for other forms of Chang's Conjecture as well.

We show that the following two theories are equiconsistent: (T) ZFC, CH and "There is a dense ideal on the first uncountable cardinal such that if j is the generic embedding associated with it then its restriction on ordinals is independent of the generic object is". (S) ZF, ADR and "Theta is a regular cardinal." The main result of this paper is that T implies that the minimal model of S exists. Woodin, in unpublished work, showed that the consistency of S implies the consistency of T. We will also give a proof of this result, which, together with our main theorem, establishes the equiconsistency of T and S. Longitudinal MRIs are often used to capture the gradual deterioration of brain structure and function caused by aging or neurological diseases. Analyzing this data via machine learning generally requires a large number of ground-truth labels, which are often missing or expensive to obtain. Reducing the need for labels, we propose a self-supervised strategy for representation learning named Longitudinal Neighborhood Embedding (LNE). Motivated by concepts in contrastive learning, LNE explicitly models the similarity between trajectory vectors across different subjects. We do so by building a graph in each training iteration defining neighborhoods in the latent space so that the progression direction of a subject follows the direction of its neighbors. This results in a smooth trajectory field that captures the global morphological change of the brain while maintaining the local continuity. We apply LNE to longitudinal T1w MRIs of two neuroimaging studies: a dataset composed of 274 healthy subjects, and Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI, N=632). The visualization of the smooth trajectory vector field and superior performance on downstream tasks demonstrate the strength of the proposed method over existing self-supervised methods in extracting information associated with normal aging and in revealing the impact of neurodegenerative disorders. Shelah showed that the existence of free subsets over internally approachable subalgebras follows from the failure of the PCF conjecture on intervals of regular cardinals. We show that a stronger property called the Approachable Bounded Subset Property can be forced from the assumption of a cardinal $\lambda$ for which the set of Mitchell orders $\{ o(\mu) \mid \mu < \lambda\}$ is unbounded in $\lambda$. Furthermore, we study the related notion of continuous tree-like scales, and show that such scales must exist on all products in canonical inner models. We use this result, together with a covering-type argument, to show that the large cardinal hypothesis from the forcing part is optimal.

This paper presents Rocket Experiment (REX) that was part of a dual payload rocket campaign for NASA's sounding rocket Black Brant IX with water recovery technology. This mission was a suborbital sounding rocket flight that was launched and recovered on April 4, 2018 and targeted the Vela supernova remnant. The purpose of REX was to classify the Technology Readiness Level of onboard devices designed for space applications. The devices were two wide-field X-ray telescopes consisting of a combination of Lobster-Eye (LE) optics with an uncooled Timepix detector (256 x 256 px @ 55 um), and additional sensors. The first telescope uses a two-dimensional combination of LE modules with a focal length of 1 m and a Field of View (FOV) of 1.0 x 1.2 deg and operates in the energy range of 3 - 60 keV. The second telescope was a one-dimensional LE with a focal length of 250 mm and a FOV of 2.7 x 8.0 deg for the energy range 3 - 40 keV. The X-ray telescopes were supplemented by a camera in the visible spectrum with 1,280 x 1,024 px resolution, which was used to obtain images of the observed sources and to verify the resulting pointing of the rocket carrier. Other devices also include infrared array sensors and inertial measurement units tested for future small satellite missions. The data handler and communication system were built using the Robot Operating System, and both the system and the electronics were deployed and operated in flight. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurological disorder primarily affecting motor function resulting in tremor at rest, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability. The physical severity of PD impairments can be quantified through the Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS), a widely used clinical rating scale. Accurate and quantitative assessment of disease progression is critical to developing a treatment that slows or stops further advancement of the disease. Prior work has mainly focused on dopamine transport neuroimaging for diagnosis or costly and intrusive wearables evaluating motor impairments. For the first time, we propose a computer vision-based model that observes non-intrusive video recordings of individuals, extracts their 3D body skeletons, tracks them through time, and classifies the movements according to the MDS-UPDRS gait scores. Experimental results show that our proposed method performs significantly better than chance and competing methods with an F1-score of 0.83 and a balanced accuracy of 81%. This is the first benchmark for classifying PD patients based on MDS-UPDRS gait severity and could be an objective biomarker for disease severity. Our work demonstrates how computer-assisted technologies can be used to non-intrusively monitor patients and their motor impairments. Many neurological diseases are characterized by gradual deterioration of brain structure and function. Large longitudinal MRI datasets have revealed such deterioration, in part, by applying machine and deep learning to predict diagnosis. A popular approach is to apply Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to extract informative features from each visit of the longitudinal MRI and then use those features to classify each visit via Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs). Such modeling neglects the progressive nature of the disease, which may result in clinically implausible classifications across visits. To avoid this issue, we propose to combine features across visits by coupling feature extraction with a novel longitudinal pooling layer and enforce consistency of the classification across visits in line with disease progression. We evaluate the proposed method on the longitudinal structural MRIs from three neuroimaging datasets: Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI, N=404), a dataset composed of 274 normal controls and 329 patients with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), and 255 youths from the National Consortium on Alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA). In all three experiments our method is superior to other widely used approaches for longitudinal classification thus making a unique contribution towards more accurate tracking of the impact of conditions on the brain. Consider $(\kappa^{+++},\kappa^{++}) \twoheadrightarrow (\kappa^+,\kappa)$ where $\kappa$ is an uncountable regular cardinal. By a result of Shelah's we have $\operatorname{cof}(X \cap \kappa^{++}) = \kappa$ for almost all $X \subset \kappa^{+++}$ witnessing this. Here we consider the question if there could be a similar result for $X \cap \kappa^+$. We use this discussion to give an interesting example of a pseudo Prikry forcing answering a question of Sinapova.

The Blood-Oxygen-Level-Dependent (BOLD) signal of resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) records the temporal dynamics of intrinsic functional networks in the brain. However, existing deep learning methods applied to rs-fMRI either neglect the functional dependency between different brain regions in a network or discard the information in the temporal dynamics of brain activity. To overcome those shortcomings, we propose to formulate functional connectivity networks within the context of spatio-temporal graphs. We train a spatio-temporal graph convolutional network (ST-GCN) on short sub-sequences of the BOLD time series to model the non-stationary nature of functional connectivity. Simultaneously, the model learns the importance of graph edges within ST-GCN to gain insight into the functional connectivities contributing to the prediction. In analyzing the rs-fMRI of the Human Connectome Project (HCP, N=1,091) and the National Consortium on Alcohol and Neurodevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA, N=773), ST-GCN is significantly more accurate than common approaches in predicting gender and age based on BOLD signals. Furthermore, the brain regions and functional connections significantly contributing to the predictions of our model are important markers according to the neuroscience literature.

Extended Red Emission (ERE) is a widely observed optical emission process, present in a wide range of circumstellar and interstellar environments in the Milky Way galaxy as well as other galaxies. Definitive identifications of the ERE carriers and the ERE process are still a matter of debate. Numerous models have been proposed in recent decades, often developed without consideration of the growing body of observational constraints, which by now invalidate many of these models. We report the first spectroscopic observations of a background star seen through the region between the ionization front and the dissociation front of the nebula IC 63. This photodissociation region (PDR) exhibits intense extended red emission (ERE) attributed to fluorescence by large molecules/ions. We detected strong diffuse interstellar bands (DIB) in the stellar spectrum, including an exceptionally strong and broad DIB at $\lambda$4428. The detection of strong DIBs in association with ERE could be consistent with the suggestion that the carriers of DIBs and ERE are identical. The likely ERE process is recurrent fluorescence, enabled by inverse internal conversions from highly excited vibrational levels of the ground state to low-lying electronic states with subsequent transitions to ground. This provides a path to rapid radiative cooling for molecules/molecular ions, greatly enhancing their ability to survive in a strongly irradiated environment. The ratio of the equivalent widths (EW) of DIBs $\lambda$5797 and $\lambda$5780 in IC 63 is the same as that observed in the low-density interstellar medium with UV interstellar radiation fields (ISRF) weaker by at least two orders of magnitude. This falsifies suggestions that the ratio of these two DIBs can serve as a measure of the UV strength of the ISRF. Observations of the nebular spectrum of the PDR of IC 63 at locations immediately adjacent to where DIBs were detected failed to reveal any presence of sharp emission features seen in the spectrum of the Red Rectangle nebula. This casts doubts upon proposals that the carriers of these features are the same as those of DIBs seen at slightly shorter wavelengths., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Presence of bias (in datasets or tasks) is inarguably one of the most critical challenges in machine learning applications that has alluded to pivotal debates in recent years. Such challenges range from spurious associations between variables in medical studies to the bias of race in gender or face recognition systems. Controlling for all types of biases in the dataset curation stage is cumbersome and sometimes impossible. The alternative is to use the available data and build models incorporating fair representation learning. In this paper, we propose such a model based on adversarial training with two competing objectives to learn features that have (1) maximum discriminative power with respect to the task and (2) minimal statistical mean dependence with the protected (bias) variable(s). Our approach does so by incorporating a new adversarial loss function that encourages a vanished correlation between the bias and the learned features. We apply our method to synthetic data, medical images (containing task bias), and a dataset for gender classification (containing dataset bias). Our results show that the learned features by our method not only result in superior prediction performance but also are unbiased. We improve previous work on the consistency strength of mutually stationary sequences of sets concentrating on points with divergent cofinality building on previous work by Adolf, Cox and Welch. Specifically, we have greatly reduced our reliance on covering properties in the proof. This will allow us to handle sequences in which sets concentrating on points of countable cofinality appear infinitely often. Furthermore we will show that if $\kappa$ is a J\'onsson cardinal with $\kappa < \aleph_\kappa$ then the sharp for a model with a strong cardinal exists.

With recent advances in deep learning, neuroimaging studies increasingly rely on convolutional networks (ConvNets) to predict diagnosis based on MR images. To gain a better understanding of how a disease impacts the brain, the studies visualize the salience maps of the ConvNet highlighting voxels within the brain majorly contributing to the prediction. However, these salience maps are generally confounded, i.e., some salient regions are more predictive of confounding variables (such as age) than the diagnosis. To avoid such misinterpretation, we propose in this paper an approach that aims to visualize confounder-free saliency maps that only highlight voxels predictive of the diagnosis. The approach incorporates univariate statistical tests to identify confounding effects within the intermediate features learned by ConvNet. The influence from the subset of confounded features is then removed by a novel partial back-propagation procedure. We use this two-step approach to visualize confounder-free saliency maps extracted from synthetic and two real datasets. These experiments reveal the potential of our visualization in producing unbiased model-interpretation.

Interstellar dust plays a central role in shaping the detailed structure of the interstellar medium, thus strongly influencing star formation and galaxy evolution. Dust extinction provides one of the main pillars of our understanding of interstellar dust while also often being one of the limiting factors when interpreting observations of distant objects, including resolved and unresolved galaxies. The ultraviolet (UV) and mid-infrared (MIR) wavelength regimes exhibit features of the main components of dust, carbonaceous and silicate materials, and therefore provide the most fruitful avenue for detailed extinction curve studies. Our current picture of extinction curves is strongly biased to nearby regions in the Milky Way. The small number of UV extinction curves measured in the Local Group (mainly Magellanic Clouds) clearly indicates that the range of dust properties is significantly broader than those inferred from the UV extinction characteristics of local regions of the Milky Way. Obtaining statistically significant samples of UV and MIR extinction measurements for all the dusty Local Group galaxies will provide, for the first time, a basis for understanding dust grains over a wide range of environments. Obtaining such observations requires sensitive medium-band UV, blue-optical, and mid-IR imaging and followup R ~ 1000 spectroscopy of thousands of sources. We give a simple definition of a spectral shift function for pairs of nonpositive operators on Banach spaces and prove trace formulas of Lifshitz-Kre\u{\i}n type for a perturbation of an operator monotonic (negative complete Bernstein) function of negative and nonpositive operators on Banach spaces induced by nuclear perturbation of an operator argument. The Lipschitzness of such functions is also investigated. The results may be regarded as a contribution to a perturbation theory for Hirsch functional calculus.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) with autonomous decision-making capabilities are of increasing interest for a wide area of applications such as logistics and disaster recovery. In order to ensure the correct behavior of the system and to recognize hazardous situations or system faults, we applied stream runtime monitoring techniques within the DLR ARTIS (Autonomous Research Testbed for Intelligent System) family of unmanned aircraft. We present our experience from specification elicitation, instrumentation, offline log-file analysis, and online monitoring on the flight computer on a test rig. The debugging and health management support through stream runtime monitoring techniques have proven highly beneficial for system design and development. At the same time, the project has identified usability improvements to the specification language, and has influenced the design of the language.

An indecomposable decomposition of a torsion-free abelian group $G$ of rank $n$ is a decomposition $G=A_1\oplus\cdots\oplus A_t$ where $A_i$ is indecomposable of rank $r_i$ so that $\sum_i r_i=n$ is a partition of $n$. The group $G$ may have decompositions that result in different partitions of $n$. We address the problem of characterising those sets of partitions of $n$ which can arise from indecomposable decompositions of a torsion-free abelian group.

The large memory requirements of deep neural networks limit their deployment and adoption on many devices. Model compression methods effectively reduce the memory requirements of these models, usually through applying transformations such as weight pruning or quantization. In this paper, we present a novel scheme for lossy weight encoding which complements conventional compression techniques. The encoding is based on the Bloomier filter, a probabilistic data structure that can save space at the cost of introducing random errors. Leveraging the ability of neural networks to tolerate these imperfections and by re-training around the errors, the proposed technique, Weightless, can compress DNN weights by up to 496x with the same model accuracy. This results in up to a 1.51x improvement over the state-of-the-art.

We analysed new wide-field, wide- and narrow-band optical images of IC 59 and IC 63, two nebulae which are externally illuminated by the early B-star {\gamma} Cas, with the objective of mapping the extended red emission (ERE), a dust-related photoluminescence process that is still poorly understood, in these two clouds. The spatial distribution of the ERE relative to the direction of the incident radiation and relative to other emission processes, whose carriers and excitation requirements are known, provides important constraints on the excitation of the ERE. In both nebulae, we find the ERE intensity to peak spatially well before the more extended distribution of mid-infrared emission in the unidentified infrared bands, supporting earlier findings that point toward far-ultraviolet (11 eV < E$_\mathrm{{photon}}$ < 13.6 eV) photons as the source of ERE excitation. The band-integrated absolute intensities of the ERE in IC 59 and IC 63 measured relative to the number density of photons available for ERE excitation are lower by about two orders of magnitude compared to ERE intensities observed in the high-latitude diffuse interstellar medium (ISM). This suggests that the lifetime of the ERE carriers is significantly reduced in the more intense radiation field prevailing in IC 59 and IC 63, pointing toward potential carriers that are only marginally stable against photo-processing under interstellar conditions. A model involving isolated molecules or molecular ions, capable of inverse internal conversion and recurrent fluorescence, appears to provide the most likely explanation for our observational results., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Laser spectroscopy of the Lamb shift (2S-2P energy difference) in light muonic atoms or ions, in which one negative muon $\mu^-$ is bound to a nucleus, has been performed. The measurements yield significantly improved values of the root-mean-square charge radii of the nuclei, owing to the large muon mass, which results in a vastly increased muon wave function overlap with the nucleus. The values of the proton and deuteron radii are 10 and 3 times more accurate than the respective CODATA values, but 7 standard deviations smaller. Data on muonic helium-3 and -4 ions is being analyzed and will give new insights. In future, the (magnetic) Zemach radii of the proton and the helium-3 nuclei will be determined from laser spectroscopy of the 1S hyperfine splittings, and the Lamb shifts of muonic Li, Be and B can be used to improve the respective charge radii., Comment: Contribution to LEAP 2016 in Kanazawa, Japan

Deep learning has been popularized by its recent successes on challenging artificial intelligence problems. One of the reasons for its dominance is also an ongoing challenge: the need for immense amounts of computational power. Hardware architects have responded by proposing a wide array of promising ideas, but to date, the majority of the work has focused on specific algorithms in somewhat narrow application domains. While their specificity does not diminish these approaches, there is a clear need for more flexible solutions. We believe the first step is to examine the characteristics of cutting edge models from across the deep learning community. Consequently, we have assembled Fathom: a collection of eight archetypal deep learning workloads for study. Each of these models comes from a seminal work in the deep learning community, ranging from the familiar deep convolutional neural network of Krizhevsky et al., to the more exotic memory networks from Facebook's AI research group. Fathom has been released online, and this paper focuses on understanding the fundamental performance characteristics of each model. We use a set of application-level modeling tools built around the TensorFlow deep learning framework in order to analyze the behavior of the Fathom workloads. We prove that the upper bounds for the consistency strength of certain instances of mutual stationarity considered by Liu-Shelah~\cite{MR1469093} are close to optimal. We also consider some related and, as it turns out, stronger properties.

We report the detection of vertically extended far-ultraviolet (FUV) and near-UV emissions in an edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 891, which we interpret as being due to dust-scattered starlight. Three-dimensional radiative transfer models are used to investigate the content of the extraplanar dust that is required to explain the UV emission. The UV halos are well reproduced by a radiative transfer model with two exponential dust disks, one with a scaleheight of $\approx$ 0.2 - 0.25 kpc and the other with a scaleheight of $\approx$ 1.2 - 2.0 kpc. The central face-on optical depth of the geometrically thick disk is found to be $\tau_{thick} \approx$ 0.3 - 0.5 at B-band. The results indicate that the dust mass at |z| > 2 kpc is $\approx$ 3 - 5% of the total dust mass, which accord well with the recent Herschel sub-millimeter observation. Our results, together with the recent discovery of the UV halos in other edge-on galaxies, suggest the widespread existence of the geometrically thick dust layer above the galactic plane in spirals., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure, accepted for publication in the ApJL

It is known in thin-film deposition that the density of nucleated clusters $N$ varies with the deposition rate $R$ as a power law, $N \sim R^\alpha$. The exponent $\alpha$ is a function of the critical nucleus size $i$ in a way that changes with the aggregation-limiting process active in a given system. We extend here to generic aggregation-limiting processes the derivation of the analytical capture-zone distribution function $P_\beta(s) = a_\beta s^\beta \exp(-b_\beta s^2)$ of Pimpinelli and Einstein [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 226102 (2007)]. We show that the exponent $\beta$ is generally related to the critical nucleus size $i$ and to the exponent $\alpha$ by the equality $\alpha (2\beta + d_f - 2) = 2i$ where $d_f$ is the fractal dimensionality of the clusters. This remarkable results allows one to measure $i$ with no a priori knowledge of the actual aggregation mechanism. We apply this equality to measuring the critical nucleus size in pentacene deposition on mica.

Radiative transfer models in a spherical, turbulent interstellar medium (ISM) in which the photon source is situated at the center are calculated to investigate the correlation between the scattered light and the dust column density. The medium is modeled using fractional Brownian motion structures that are appropriate for turbulent ISM. The correlation plot between the scattered light and optical depth shows substantial scatter and deviation from simple proportionality. It was also found that the overall density contrast is smoothed out in scattered light. In other words, there is an enhancement of the dust-scattered flux in low-density regions, while the scattered flux is suppressed in high-density regions. The correlation becomes less significant as the scattering becomes closer to be isotropic and the medium becomes more turbulent. Therefore, the scattered light observed in near-infrared wavelengths would show much weaker correlation than the observations in optical and ultraviolet wavelengths. Radiative deexcitation (RD) of the metastable 2S state of muonic protium and deuterium atoms has been observed. In muonic protium, we improve the precision on lifetime and population (formation probability) values for the short-lived {\mu}p(2S) component, and give an upper limit for RD of long-lived {\mu}p(2S) atoms. In muonic deuterium at 1 hPa, 3.1 +-0.3 % of all stopped muons form {\mu}d(2S) atoms. The short-lived 2S component has a population of 1.35 +0.57 -0.33 % and a lifetime of {\tau}_short({\mu}d) = 138 +32 -34 ns. We see evidence for RD of long-lived {\mu}d(2S) with a lifetime of {\tau}_long({\mu}d) = 1.15 +0.75 -0.53 {\mu}s. In this paper we analyse a set of 33 optical spectra, which were acquired with the ARCES echelle spectrograph (R = 38,000) on the 3.5-m telescope at the Apache Point Observatory. We examine the H{\alpha} profile in each of these observations in order to determine the geometry and velocity structure of the previously discovered bipolar jet, which originates from the secondary star of HD 44179 located at the centre of the Red Rectangle nebula. Using a 3D geometric model we are able to determine the orbital coverage during which the jet occults the primary star. During the occultation, part of the H{\alpha} line profile appears in absorption. The velocity structure of the jet was determined by modelling the absorption line profile using the Sobolev approximation for each orbital phase during which we have observations. The results indicate the presence of a wide angle jet, likely responsible for observed biconical structure of the outer nebula. Furthermore, we were able to determine a likely velocity structure and rule out several others.
