Many active galaxies harbor powerful relativistic jets, however, the detailed mechanisms of their formation and acceleration remain poorly understood. To investigate the area of jet acceleration and collimation with the highest available angular resolution, we study the innermost region of the bipolar jet in the nearby low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER) galaxy NGC 1052. We combined observations of NGC 1052 taken with VLBA, GMVA, and EHT over one week in the spring of 2017. For the first time, NGC 1052 was detected with the EHT, providing a size of the central region in-between both jet bases of 250 RS (Schwarzschild radii) perpendicular to the jet axes. This size estimate supports previous studies of the jets expansion profile which suggest two breaks of the profile at around 300 RS and 10000 RS distances to the core. Furthermore, we estimated the magnetic field to be 1.25 Gauss at a distance of 22 {\mu}as from the central engine by fitting a synchrotron-self absorption spectrum to the innermost emission feature, which shows a spectral turn-over at about 130 GHz. Assuming a purely poloidal magnetic field, this implies an upper limit on the magnetic field strength at the event horizon of 26000 Gauss, which is consistent with previous measurements. The complex, low-brightness, double-sided jet structure in NGC 1052 makes it a challenge to detect the source at millimeter (mm) wavelengths. However, our first EHT observations have demonstrated that detection is possible up to at least 230 GHz. This study offers a glimpse through the dense surrounding torus and into the innermost central region, where the jets are formed. Organic diradicals are envisioned as elementary building blocks for designing a new generation of spintronic devices and have been used in constructing prototypical field effect transistors and non-linear optical devices. Open-shell systems, however, are also reactive, thus requiring design strategies to protect their radical character from the environment, especially when they are embedded into solid-state devices. Here, we report the persistence on a metallic surface of the diradical character of a diindeno[b,i]anthracene (DIAn) core protected by bulky end-groups. Our scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on single-molecules detected singlet-triplet excitations that were absent for DIAn species packed in assembled structures. Density functional theory simulations unravel that molecular geometry on the metal substrate can crucially modify the value of the single-triplet gap via the delocalization of the radical sites. The persistence of the diradical character over metallic substrates is a promising finding for integrating radical-based materials in functional devices.

The 2017 observing campaign of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) delivered the first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) images at the observing frequency of 230 GHz, leading to a number of unique studies on black holes and relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei (AGN). In total, eighteen sources were observed: the main science targets, Sgr A* and M87 along with various calibrators. We investigated the morphology of the sixteen AGN in the EHT 2017 data set, focusing on the properties of the VLBI cores: size, flux density, and brightness temperature. We studied their dependence on the observing frequency in order to compare it with the Blandford-K\"onigl (BK) jet model. We modeled the source structure of seven AGN in the EHT 2017 data set using linearly polarized circular Gaussian components and collected results for the other nine AGN from dedicated EHT publications, complemented by lower frequency data in the 2-86 GHz range. Then, we studied the dependences of the VLBI core flux density, size, and brightness temperature on the frequency measured in the AGN host frame. We compared the observations with the BK jet model and estimated the magnetic field strength dependence on the distance from the central black hole. Our results indicate a deviation from the standard BK model, particularly in the decrease of the brightness temperature with the observing frequency. Either bulk acceleration of the jet material, energy transfer from the magnetic field to the particles, or both are required to explain the observations.

Understanding convective processes leading to severe weather hazards within Mediterranean cyclones is relevant for operational forecasters, insurance industry, and enhancing societal preparedness. In this work we examine the climatological link between Mediterranean cyclones and atmospheric conditions conducive to the formation of severe convection and convective hazards (convective precipitation, lightning and hail potential). Using ATDnet lightning detections we find that, from autumn to spring, 20 to 60% of lightning hours over the Mediterranean basin and adjacent land regions are associated with the presence of a nearby cyclone. Based on reanalysis data, severe convective environments, deep, moist convection (i.e., lightning potential) and related hazards are frequent in the warm sector of Mediterranean cyclones and to the north-east of their centres. In agreement with previous literature, convective processes and hazards peak approximately six hours prior to the time of minimum pressure of the cyclone centre. Moreover, severe convective environments are often detected in cyclone categories typical of transition seasons (especially autumn) and summer, while they are rarer in deep baroclinic cyclones with peak occurrence during winter. Finally, we show that dynamical cyclone features distinguish regions favourable to deep, moist convection. Warm conveyor belts of Mediterranean cyclones, characterised by large-scale ascent and located in regions of high thermodynamic instability, have the largest lightning potential. The potential is only half as intense along the cyclones' cold fronts.

We obtain CO(1-0) molecular gas measurements with ATCA on a sample of 43 spectroscopically confirmed H$\alpha$ emitters in the Spiderweb protocluster at $z=2.16$ and investigate the relation between their star formation and cold gas reservoirs as a function of environment. We achieve a CO(1-0) detection rate of $\sim23\pm12\%$ with 10 dual CO(1-0) and H$\alpha$ detections at $10<\log M_{*}/M_\odot<11.5$. In addition, we obtain upper limits for the remaining sources. In terms of total gas fractions ($F_{gas}$), our sample is divided into two different regimes with a steep transition at $\log M_{*}/M_\odot\approx10.5$. Galaxies below that threshold have gas fractions that in some cases are close to unity, indicating that their gas reservoir has been replenished by inflows from the cosmic web. However, objects at $\log M_{*}/M_\odot>10.5$ display significantly lower gas fractions and are dominated by AGN (12 out of 20). Stacking results yield $F_{gas}\approx0.55$ for massive emitters excluding AGN, and $F_{gas}\approx0.35$ when examining only AGN candidates. In the past few years, deep learning algorithms have been widely used for cardiac image segmentation. However, most of these architectures rely on convolutions that hardly model long-range dependencies, limiting their ability to extract contextual information. In order to tackle this issue, this article introduces the Swin Filtering Block network (SFB-net) which takes advantage of both conventional and swin transformer layers. The former are used to introduce spatial attention at the bottom of the network, while the latter are applied to focus on high level semantically rich features between the encoder and decoder. An average Dice score of 92.4 was achieved on the ACDC dataset. To the best of our knowledge, this result outperforms any other work on this dataset. The average Dice score of 87.99 obtained on the M\&M's dataset demonstrates that the proposed method generalizes well to data from different vendors and centres.

Cosmic voids, distinguished by their low-density environment, provide a unique opportunity to explore the interplay between the cosmic environment and the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. Data on the molecular gas has been scarce so far. In this paper, we continue previous research done in the CO-CAVITY pilot project to study the molecular gas content and properties in void galaxies to search for possible differences compared to galaxies that inhabit denser structures. We observed at the IRAM 30 m telescope the CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emission of 106 void galaxies selected from the CAVITY survey. Together with data from the literature, we obtained a sample of 200 void galaxies with CO data. We conducted a comprehensive comparison of the specific star formation rate (sSFR = SFR/M$_*$), the molecular gas fraction (MH$_2$/M$_*$), and the star formation efficiency (SFE = SFR/MH$_2$) between the void galaxies and a comparison sample of galaxies in filaments and walls, selected from the xCOLD GASS survey. We found no statistically significant difference between void galaxies and the comparison sample in the molecular gas fraction as a function of stellar mass for galaxies on the star-forming main sequence (SFMS). However, for void galaxies, the SFE was found to be constant across all stellar mass bins, while there is a decreasing trend with M$_*$ for the comparison sample. Finally, we found some indications for a smaller dynamical range in the molecular gas fraction as a function of distance to the SFMS in void galaxies. Overall, our analysis finds that the molecular gas properties of void galaxies are not very different from denser environments. The physical origin of the most significant difference that we found - a constant SFE as a function of stellar mass in void galaxies - is unclear and requires further investigation and higher-resolution data., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures. The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870$\mu$m wavelength (345$\,$GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth, and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on inter-continental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in October 2018. The longest-baseline detections approach 11$\,$G$\lambda$ corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19$\mu$as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870$\mu$m is comparable to that at 1.3$\,$mm on the relevant integration time scales between 2 and 100$\,$s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870$\mu$m. Operation at this short wavelength, combined with anticipated enhancements of the EHT, will lead to a unique high angular resolution instrument for black hole studies, capable of resolving the event horizons of supermassive black holes in both space and time., Comment: Corresponding author: S. Here we analyze the electron transport properties of a device formed of two crossed graphene nanoribbons with zigzag edges (ZGNRs) in a spin state with total magnetization different from zero. While the ground state of ZGNRs has been shown to display antiferromagnetic ordering between the electrons at the edges, for wide ZGNRs--where the localized spin states at the edges are decoupled and the exchange interaction is close to zero--, in presence of relatively small magnetic fields, the ferromagnetic (FM) spin configuration can in fact become the state of lowest energy due to the Zeeman effect. In these terms, by comparing the total energy of a periodic ZGNR as a function of the magnetization per unit cell we obtain the FM-like solution of lowest energy for the perfect ribbon, the corresponding FM-like configuration of lowest energy for the four-terminal device formed of crossed ZGNRs, and the critical magnetic field needed to excite the system to this spin configuration. By performing transport calculations, we analyze the role of the distance between layers and the crossing angle of this device in the electrical conductance, at small gate voltages. The problem is approached employing the mean-field Hubbard Hamiltonian in combination with non-equilibrium Green's functions. We find that ZGNR devices subject to transverse magnetic fields may acquire a high-spin configuration that ensures a metallic response and tunable beam splitting properties, making this setting promising for studying electron quantum optics with single-electron excitations.

Heterogeneous systems with analog CMOS circuits integrated with nanoscale memristive devices enable efficient deployment of neural networks on neuromorphic hardware. CMOS Neuron with low footprint can emulate slow temporal dynamics by operating with extremely low current levels. Nevertheless, the current read from the memristive synapses can be higher by several orders of magnitude, and performing impedance matching between neurons and synapses is mandatory. In this paper, we implement an analog leaky integrate and fire (LIF) neuron with a voltage regulator and current attenuator for interfacing CMOS neurons with memristive synapses. In addition, the neuron design proposes a dual leakage that could enable the implementation of local learning rules such as voltage-dependent synaptic plasticity. We also propose a connection scheme to implement adaptive LIF neurons based on two-neuron interaction. The demand for explainable and energy-efficient artificial intelligence (AI) systems for edge computing has led to significant interest in electronic systems dedicated to Bayesian inference. Traditional designs of such systems often rely on stochastic computing, which offers high energy efficiency but suffers from latency issues and struggles with low-probability values. In this paper, we introduce the logarithmic memristor-based Bayesian machine, an innovative design that leverages the unique properties of memristors and logarithmic computing as an alternative to stochastic computing. We present a prototype machine fabricated in a hybrid CMOS/hafnium-oxide memristor process. We validate the versatility and robustness of our system through experimental validation and extensive simulations in two distinct applications: gesture recognition and sleep stage classification. The logarithmic approach simplifies the computational model by converting multiplications into additions and enhances the handling of low-probability events, which are crucial in time-dependent tasks. Our results demonstrate that the logarithmic Bayesian machine achieves superior performance in terms of accuracy and energy efficiency compared to its stochastic counterpart, particularly in scenarios involving complex probabilistic models. This work paves the way for the deployment of advanced AI capabilities in edge devices, where power efficiency and reliability are paramount.

The COVID-19 pandemic led to a large global effort to sequence SARS-CoV-2 genomes from patient samples to track viral evolution and inform public health response. Millions of SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences have been deposited in global public repositories. The Canadian COVID-19 Genomics Network (CanCOGeN - VirusSeq), a consortium tasked with coordinating expanded sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 genomes across Canada early in the pandemic, created the Canadian VirusSeq Data Portal, with associated data pipelines and procedures, to support these efforts. The goal of VirusSeq was to allow open access to Canadian SARS-CoV-2 genomic sequences and enhanced, standardized contextual data that were unavailable in other repositories and that meet FAIR standards (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable). The Portal data submission pipeline contains data quality checking procedures and appropriate acknowledgement of data generators that encourages collaboration. Here we also highlight Duotang, a web platform that presents genomic epidemiology and modeling analyses on circulating and emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants in Canada. Duotang presents dynamic changes in variant composition of SARS-CoV-2 in Canada and by province, estimates variant growth, and displays complementary interactive visualizations, with a text overview of the current situation. The VirusSeq Data Portal and Duotang resources, alongside additional analyses and resources computed from the Portal (COVID-MVP, CoVizu), are all open-source and freely available. Together, they provide an updated picture of SARS-CoV-2 evolution to spur scientific discussions, inform public discourse, and support communication with and within public health authorities. They also serve as a framework for other jurisdictions interested in open, collaborative sequence data sharing and analyses.

We have learnt in the last decades that the majority of galaxies belong to high density regions interconnected in a sponge-like fashion. This large-scale structure is characterised by clusters, filaments, walls, where most galaxies concentrate, but also under-dense regions, called voids. The void regions and the galaxies within represent an ideal place for the study of galaxy formation and evolution as they are largely unaffected by the complex physical processes that transform galaxies in high-density environments. These void galaxies can hold the key as well to answer current challenges to the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm. The Calar Alto Void Integral-field Treasury surveY (CAVITY) is a Legacy project approved by the Calar Alto Observatory to obtain spatially resolved spectroscopic information of $\sim300$ void galaxies in the Local Universe (0.005 < z < 0.050) covering from -17.0 to -21.5 in $\rm r$ band absolute magnitude. It officially started in January 2021 and has been awarded 110 useful dark observing nights at the 3.5 m telescope using the PMAS spectrograph. Complementary follow-up projects including deep optical imaging, integrated, as well as resolved CO data, and integrated HI spectra, have joint the PMAS observations and naturally complete the scientific aim of characterising galaxies in cosmic voids. The extension data has been denominated CAVITY+. The data will be available to the whole community in different data releases, the first of which is planned for July 2024, and it will provide the community with PMAS data cubes for around 100 void galaxies through a user friendly, and well documented, database platform. We present here the survey, sample selection, data reduction, quality control schemes, science goals, and some examples of the scientific power of the CAVITY and CAVITY+ data., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures. The nearby elliptical galaxy M87 contains one of the only two supermassive black holes whose emission surrounding the event horizon has been imaged by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). In 2018, more than two dozen multi-wavelength (MWL) facilities (from radio to gamma-ray energies) took part in the second M87 EHT campaign. The goal of this extensive MWL campaign was to better understand the physics of the accreting black hole M87*, the relationship between the inflow and inner jets, and the high-energy particle acceleration. Understanding the complex astrophysics is also a necessary first step towards performing further tests of general relativity. The MWL campaign took place in April 2018, overlapping with the EHT M87* observations. We present a new, contemporaneous spectral energy distribution (SED) ranging from radio to very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays, as well as details of the individual observations and light curves. We also conduct phenomenological modelling to investigate the basic source properties. We present the first VHE gamma-ray flare from M87 detected since 2010. The flux above 350 GeV has more than doubled within a period of about 36 hours. We find that the X-ray flux is enhanced by about a factor of two compared to 2017, while the radio and millimetre core fluxes are consistent between 2017 and 2018. We detect evidence for a monotonically increasing jet position angle that corresponds to variations in the bright spot of the EHT image. Our results show the value of continued MWL monitoring together with precision imaging for addressing the origins of high-energy particle acceleration. While we cannot currently pinpoint the precise location where such acceleration takes place, the new VHE gamma-ray flare already presents a challenge to simple one-zone leptonic emission model approaches, and emphasises the need for combined image and spectral modelling., Comment: 46 pages, 23 figures, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics on August. 29, 2024

Methods.We applied distinct selection criteria to attain an SFG sample with minimal AGN contamination. Multiple approaches were used to estimate the intrinsic extinction, SFR and gas-phase metallicity for the SFGs. In conjunction with findings in the literature, we examined the correlation between SFRs and stellar masses ($M_*$), as well as the metallicity evolution depending on $M_*$. Finally, the 3D relationship between $M_*$, SFR and metallicity, is also studied.} Results. From the initial spectroscopic sample of 409 FIR-selected objects from the Lockman--SpReSO catalogue, 69 (17\%) AGNs have been identified and excluded, which is nearly double the percentage found in local studies, leaving a sample of 340 SFGs. The analysis of the $M_*$--SFR relationship revealed that Lockman--SpReSO IR-selected SFGs show signs of evolution at redshifts $z>0.4$, shifting above the main sequence, with a mean value of $\sim0.4$ dex. They are located within the starburst galaxy region since 78\% of the galaxies fall into this category. In addition, no evident flattening was found in the relation to specific SFR with redshift for $\log M_* (M_\odot) \gtrsim 10.5$. In line with the $M_*$--metallicity relation (MZR) outcomes published in previous studies for optically selected SFGs, however, during the analysis of the MZR, it was found that IR-selected SFGs exhibit lower metallicities than those anticipated on the basis of their $M_*$ and redshift. During the investigation of the 3D $M_*$--SFR--metallicity relation (FP), it was established that the research sample is consistent with relations in the existing literature, with an average scatter of $\sim0.2$ dex. However, a re-calibration of the FP when using the SFR obtained from the IR luminosity is required and, in this case, no attenuation in the correlation for $\log M_* (M_\odot) \gtrsim 10.5$ is observed., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures, accepted in A&A

In this paper, we revisit the data for the galaxy cluster ZwCl 0024.0+1652 provided by the GLACE survey and study the mass--metallicity function and its relationship with the environment. Here we describe an alternative way to reduce the data from OSIRIS tunable filters. This method gives us better uncertainties in the fluxes of the emission lines and the derived quantities. We present an updated catalogue of cluster galaxies with emission in H$\alpha$ and [N\,{\sc{ii}}] $\lambda\lambda$6548,6583. We also discuss the biases of these new fluxes and describe the way in which we calculated the mass--metallicity relationship and its uncertainties. We generated a new catalogue of 84 emission-line galaxies with reliable fluxes in [N\,{\sc{ii}}] and H$\alpha$ lines from a list of 174 galaxies. We find a relationship between the clustercentric radius and the density of galaxies. We derived the mass--metallicity relationship for ZwCl 0024.0+1652 and compared it with clusters and field galaxies from the literature. We find a difference in the mass--metallicity relationship when compared to more massive clusters, with the latter showing on average higher values of abundance. This could be an effect of the quenching of the star formation, which seems to be more prevalent in low-mass galaxies in more massive clusters. 3C84 is a nearby radio source with a complex total intensity structure, showing linear polarisation and spectral patterns. A detailed investigation of the central engine region necessitates the use of VLBI above the hitherto available maximum frequency of 86GHz. Using ultrahigh resolution VLBI observations at the highest available frequency of 228GHz, we aim to directly detect compact structures and understand the physical conditions in the compact region of 3C84. We used EHT 228GHz observations and, given the limited (u,v)-coverage, applied geometric model fitting to the data. We also employed quasi-simultaneously observed, multi-frequency VLBI data for the source in order to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the core structure. We report the detection of a highly ordered, strong magnetic field around the central, SMBH of 3C84. The brightness temperature analysis suggests that the system is in equipartition. We determined a turnover frequency of $\nu_m=(113\pm4)$GHz, a corresponding synchrotron self-absorbed magnetic field of $B_{SSA}=(2.9\pm1.6)$G, and an equipartition magnetic field of $B_{eq}=(5.2\pm0.6)$G. Three components are resolved with the highest fractional polarisation detected for this object ($m_\textrm{net}=(17.0\pm3.9)$%). The positions of the components are compatible with those seen in low-frequency VLBI observations since 2017-2018. We report a steeply negative slope of the spectrum at 228GHz. We used these findings to test models of jet formation, propagation, and Faraday rotation in 3C84. The findings of our investigation into different flow geometries and black hole spins support an advection-dominated accretion flow in a magnetically arrested state around a rapidly rotating supermassive black hole as a model of the jet-launching system in the core of 3C84. Methods. We performed measurements of the \MgII, \MgI, \FeIIa, \FeIIb, and \FeIIc\ spectral lines present in the spectra of the selected sample to determine the EW and velocity of the flows observed in the star-forming galaxies. Subsequently, we conducted $10^7$ bootstrap simulations using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient ($\rho_s$) to explore correlations with galaxy properties. Furthermore, we calculated the covering factor, gas density, and optical depth for the measured \ion{Fe}{II} doublets. Results. Our analysis revealed strong correlations between the EW of \ion{Mg}{II} lines and both $M_{*}$ ($\rho_s=0.43$, 4.5$\sigma$) and SFR ($\rho_s=0.42$, 4.4$\sigma$). For the \ion{Fe}{II} lines, we observed strong correlations between the EW and SFR ($\rho_s\sim0.65$, $>3.9\sigma$), with a weaker correlation for $M_{*}$ ($\rho_s\sim0.35$, $>1.9\sigma$). No notable correlations were found between velocity measurements of \ion{Mg}{II} line and $M_{*}$, SFR, or sSFR of the objects ($\rho_s\sim0.1)$. However, a negative strong correlation was found between the velocity of the \ion{Fe}{II} lines and the SFR of the galaxies ($\rho_s\sim-0.45$, $\sim3\sigma$). Our results align with previous studies but studying FIR-selected objects. Finally, we detected a candidate \textit{loitering outflow}, a recently discovered subtype of FeLoBAL quasar, at redshift of $z=1.4399$, exhibiting emission in \ion{C}{III}] and low line velocities ($|v|\lesssim$ 200 km/s)., Comment: 25 pages, 31 figures

This paper investigates the functional calculus of the harmonic oscillator on each Moyal-Groenewold plane, the noncommutative phase space which is a fundamental object in quantum mechanics. Specifically, we show that the harmonic oscillator admits a bounded $\mathrm{H}^\infty(\Sigma_\omega)$ functional calculus for any angle $0 < \omega < \frac{\pi}{2}$ and even a bounded H\"ormander functional calculus on the associated noncommutative $\mathrm{L}^p$-spaces, where $\Sigma_\omega=\{ z \in \mathbb{C}^*: |\arg z| <\omega \}$. To achieve these results, we develop a connection with the theory of 2-step nilpotent Lie groups by introducing a notion of twisted Weyl tuple and connecting it to some semigroups of operators previously investigated by Robinson via group representations. Along the way, we demonstrate that $\mathrm{L}^p$-square-max decompositions lead to new insights between noncommutative ergodic theory and $R$-boundedness, and we prove a twisted transference principle, which is of independent interest. Our approach accommodates the presence of a constant magnetic field and they are indeed new even in the framework of magnetic Weyl calculus on classical $\mathrm{L}^p$-spaces. Our results contribute to the understanding of functional calculi on noncommutative spaces and have implications for the maximal regularity of the most basic evolution equations associated to the harmonic oscillator., Comment: 70 pages, minor modifications

We establish well-posedness and maximal regularity estimates for linear parabolic SPDE in divergence form involving random coefficients that are merely bounded and measurable in the time, space, and probability variables. To reach this level of generality, and avoid any of the smoothness assumptions used in the literature, we introduce a notion of pathwise weak solution and develop a new harmonic analysis toolkit. The latter includes techniques to prove the boundedness of various maximal regularity operators on relevant spaces of square functions, the parabolic tent spaces $\mathrm{T}^{p}$. Applied to deterministic parabolic PDE in divergence form with real coefficients, our results also give the first extension of Lions maximal regularity theorem on $\mathrm{L}^{2}(\mathbb{R}_{+} \times \mathbb{R}^{n})=\mathrm{T}^2$ to $\mathrm{T}^p$, for all $1-\varepsilon

This paper presents the results of 475 hours of interferometric observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array towards the Spiderweb protocluster at \(z=2.16\). We search for large, extended molecular gas reservoirs among 46 previously detected CO(1-0) emitters, employing a customised method we developed. Based on the CO emission images and position-velocity diagrams, as well as the ranking of sources using a binary weighting of six different criteria, we have identified 14 robust and 7 tentative candidates that exhibit large extended molecular gas reservoirs. These extended reservoirs are defined as having sizes greater than 40 kpc or super-galactic scale. This result suggests a high frequency of extended gas reservoirs, comprising at least \(30 \%\) of our CO-selected sample. An environmental study of the candidates is carried out based on N-th nearest neighbour and we find that the large molecular gas reservoirs tend to exist in denser regions. The spatial distribution of our candidates is mainly centred on the core region of the Spiderweb protocluster. The performance and adaptability of our method are discussed. We found 13 (potentially) extended gas reservoirs located in nine galaxy (proto)clusters from the literature. We noticed that large extended molecular gas reservoirs surrounding (normal) star-forming galaxies in protoclusters are rare. This may be attributable to the lack of observations low-J CO transitions and the lack of quantitative analyses of molecular gas morphologies. The large gas reservoirs in the Spiderweb protocluster are a potential source of the intracluster medium seen in low redshift Virgo- or Coma-like galaxy clusters., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures. The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observed in 2017 the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), at a frequency of 228.1 GHz ($\lambda$=1.3 mm). The fundamental physics tests that even a single pulsar orbiting Sgr A* would enable motivate searching for pulsars in EHT datasets. The high observing frequency means that pulsars - which typically exhibit steep emission spectra - are expected to be very faint. However, it also negates pulse scattering, an effect that could hinder pulsar detections in the Galactic Center. Additionally, magnetars or a secondary inverse Compton emission could be stronger at millimeter wavelengths than at lower frequencies. We present a search for pulsars close to Sgr A* using the data from the three most-sensitive stations in the EHT 2017 campaign: the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the Large Millimeter Telescope and the IRAM 30 m Telescope. We apply three detection methods based on Fourier-domain analysis, the Fast-Folding-Algorithm and single pulse search targeting both pulsars and burst-like transient emission; using the simultaneity of the observations to confirm potential candidates. No new pulsars or significant bursts were found. Being the first pulsar search ever carried out at such high radio frequencies, we detail our analysis methods and give a detailed estimation of the sensitivity of the search. We conclude that the EHT 2017 observations are only sensitive to a small fraction ($\lesssim$2.2%) of the pulsars that may exist close to Sgr A*, motivating further searches for fainter pulsars in the region., Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures, 6 Tables. The Rubio de Francia extrapolation theorem is a very powerful result which states that in order to show that certain operators satisfy weighted norm inequalities with Muckenhoupt weights it suffices to see that the corresponding inequalities hold for some fixed exponent, for instance $p=2$. In this paper we extend this result and show that this extrapolation principle allows one to obtain weighted estimates in tent spaces. From our extrapolation result we automatically derive new estimates (and reprove some other) concerning Calder\'on-Zygmund operators, operators associated with the Kato conjecture, or fractional operators.

We present the first systematic study of the molecular gas and star formation efficiency in a sample of ten narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies selected to have X-ray Ultra Fast Outflows and, therefore, to potentially show AGN feedback effects. CO observations were obtained with the IRAM 30m telescope in six galaxies and from the literature for four galaxies. We derived the stellar mass, star formation rate, AGN and FIR dust luminosities by fitting the multi-band spectral energy distributions with the CIGALE code. Most of the galaxies in our sample lie above the main sequence (MS) and the molecular depletion time is one to two orders of magnitude shorter than the one typically measured in local star-forming galaxies. Moreover, we found a promising correlation between the star formation efficiency and the Eddington ratio, as well as a tentative correlation with the AGN luminosity. The role played by the AGN activity in the regulation of star formation within the host galaxies of our sample remains uncertain (little or no effect? positive feedback?). Memristor-based neural networks provide an exceptional energy-efficient platform for artificial intelligence (AI), presenting the possibility of self-powered operation when paired with energy harvesters. However, most memristor-based networks rely on analog in-memory computing, necessitating a stable and precise power supply, which is incompatible with the inherently unstable and unreliable energy harvesters. In this work, we fabricated a robust binarized neural network comprising 32,768 memristors, powered by a miniature wide-bandgap solar cell optimized for edge applications. Our circuit employs a resilient digital near-memory computing approach, featuring complementarily programmed memristors and logic-in-sense-amplifier. This design eliminates the need for compensation or calibration, operating effectively under diverse conditions. Under high illumination, the circuit achieves inference performance comparable to that of a lab bench power supply. In low illumination scenarios, it remains functional with slightly reduced accuracy, seamlessly transitioning to an approximate computing mode. Through image classification neural network simulations, we demonstrate that misclassified images under low illumination are primarily difficult-to-classify cases. Our approach lays the groundwork for self-powered AI and the creation of intelligent sensors for various applications in health, safety, and environment monitoring.

Interpretation of resolved polarized images of black holes by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) requires predictions of the polarized emission observable by an Earth-based instrument for a particular model of the black hole accretion system. Such predictions are generated by general relativistic radiative transfer (GRRT) codes, which integrate the equations of polarized radiative transfer in curved spacetime. A selection of ray-tracing GRRT codes used within the EHT collaboration is evaluated for accuracy and consistency in producing a selection of test images, demonstrating that the various methods and implementations of radiative transfer calculations are highly consistent. When imaging an analytic accretion model, we find that all codes produce images similar within a pixel-wise normalized mean squared error (NMSE) of 0.012 in the worst case. When imaging a snapshot from a cell-based magnetohydrodynamic simulation, we find all test images to be similar within NMSEs of 0.02, 0.04, 0.04, and 0.12 in Stokes I, Q, U , and V respectively. We additionally find the values of several image metrics relevant to published EHT results to be in agreement to much better precision than measurement uncertainties., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present an integrated circuit fabricated in a process co-integrating CMOS and hafnium-oxide memristor technology, which provides a prototyping platform for projects involving memristors. Our circuit includes the periphery circuitry for using memristors within digital circuits, as well as an analog mode with direct access to memristors. The platform allows optimizing the conditions for reading and writing memristors, as well as developing and testing innovative memristor-based neuromorphic concepts.

We introduce new function spaces $\mathcal{L}_{W,s}^{q,p}(\mathbb{R}^{n})$ that yield a natural reformulation of the $\ell^{q}L^{p}$ decoupling inequalities for the sphere and the light cone. These spaces are invariant under the Euclidean half-wave propagators, but not under all Fourier integral operators unless $p=q$, in which case they coincide with the Hardy spaces for Fourier integral operators. We study theoretically electron interference in a Mach--Zehnder-like geometry formed by four zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) arranged in parallel pairs, one on top of the other, such that they form intersection angles of 60$^\circ$. Depending on the interribbon separation, each intersection can be tuned to act either as an electron beam splitter or as a mirror, enabling tuneable circuitry with interfering pathways. Based on the mean-field Hubbard model and Green's function techniques, we evaluate the electron transport properties of such 8-terminal devices and identify pairs of terminals that are subject to self-interference. We further show that the scattering matrix formalism in the approximation of independent scattering at the four individual junctions provides accurate results as compared with the Green's function description, allowing for a simple interpretation of the interference process between two dominant pathways. This enables us to characterize the device sensitivity to phase shifts from an external magnetic flux according to the Aharonov--Bohm effect as well as from small geometric variations in the two path lengths. The proposed devices could find applications as magnetic field sensors and as detectors of phase shifts induced by local scatterers on the different segments, such as adsorbates, impurities or defects. The setup could also be used to create and study quantum entanglement.

Context. The present study addresses a key question related to our understanding of the relation between void galaxies and their environment: the relationship between luminous and dark matter in and around voids. Aims. To explore the extent to which local Universe voids are empty of matter, we study the full (dark+luminous) matter content of seven nearby cosmic voids that are fully contained within the CosmicFlows-3 volume. Methods. We obtained the matter-density profiles of seven cosmic voids using two independent methods. These were built from the galaxy redshift space two-point correlation function in conjunction with peculiar velocity gradients from the CosmicFlows-3 dataset. Results. The results are striking, because when the redshift survey is used, all voids show a radial positive gradient of galaxies, while based on the dynamical analysis, only three of these voids display a clear underdensity of matter in their center. Conclusions. This work constitutes the most detailed observational analysis of voids conducted so far, and shows that void emptiness should be derived from dynamical information. Context. Extragalactic surveys are a key tool for better understanding the evolution of galaxies. Both deep and wide-field surveys serve to provide a clearer emerging picture of the physical processes that take place in and around galaxies, and to identify which of these processes are the most important in shaping the properties of galaxies. Aims. The Lockman Spectroscopic Redshift Survey using Osiris (Lockman-SpReSO) aims to provide one of the most complete optical spectroscopic follow-ups of the far-infrared (FIR) sources detected by the \textit{Herschel} Space Observatory in the Lockman Hole (LH) field. The optical spectroscopic study of the FIR-selected galaxies supplies valuable information about the relation between fundamental FIR and optical parameters, including extinction, star formation rate, and gas metallicity. In this article, we introduce and provide an in-depth description of the Lockman-SpReSO project and of its early results. Methods. We selected FIR sources from \textit{Herschel} observations of the central 24 arcmin $\times$ 24 arcmin of the LH field with an optical counterpart up to 24.5 $R_{\rm C}$(AB). The sample comprises 956 \textit{Herschel} FIR sources, plus 188 additional interesting objects in the field. These are point X-ray sources, cataclysmic variable star candidates, high-velocity halo star candidates, radio sources, very red quasi-stellar objects, and optical counterparts of sub-millimetre galaxies. The faint component of the catalogue ($R_{\rm C}(\mathrm{AB})\geq20$) was observed using the OSIRIS instrument on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias in multi-object spectroscopy (MOS) mode. The bright component was observed using two multi-fibre spectrographs: the AF2-WYFFOS at the William Herschel Telescope and the HYDRA instrument at the WYIN telescope., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures

Spin-hosting graphene nanostructures are promising metal-free systems for elementary quantum spintronic devices. Conventionally, spins are protected from quenching by electronic bandgaps, which also hinder electronic access to their quantum state. Here, we present a narrow graphene nanoribbon substitutionally doped with boron heteroatoms that combines a metallic character with the presence of localized spin 1/2 states in its interior. The ribbon was fabricated by on-surface synthesis on a Au(111) substrate. Transport measurements through ribbons suspended between the tip and the sample of a scanning tunnelling microscope revealed their ballistic behavior, characteristic of metallic nanowires. Conductance spectra show fingerprints of localized spin states in form of Kondo resonances and inelastic tunnelling excitations. Density functional theory rationalizes the metallic character of the graphene nanoribbon due to the partial depopulation of the valence band induced by the boron atoms. The transferred charge builds localized magnetic moments around the boron atoms. The orthogonal symmetry of the spin-hosting state's and the valence band's wavefunctions protects them from mixing, maintaining the spin states localized. This study proposes voltage-dependent-synaptic plasticity (VDSP), a novel brain-inspired unsupervised local learning rule for the online implementation of Hebb's plasticity mechanism on neuromorphic hardware. The proposed VDSP learning rule updates the synaptic conductance on the spike of the postsynaptic neuron only, which reduces by a factor of two the number of updates with respect to standard spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP). This update is dependent on the membrane potential of the presynaptic neuron, which is readily available as part of neuron implementation and hence does not require additional memory for storage. Moreover, the update is also regularized on synaptic weight and prevents explosion or vanishing of weights on repeated stimulation. Rigorous mathematical analysis is performed to draw an equivalence between VDSP and STDP. To validate the system-level performance of VDSP, we train a single-layer spiking neural network (SNN) for the recognition of handwritten digits. We report 85.01 $ \pm $ 0.76% (Mean $ \pm $ S.D.) accuracy for a network of 100 output neurons on the MNIST dataset. The performance improves when scaling the network size (89.93 $ \pm $ 0.41% for 400 output neurons, 90.56 $ \pm $ 0.27 for 500 neurons), which validates the applicability of the proposed learning rule for spatial pattern recognition tasks. Crossbar arrays of resistive memories (RRAM) hold the promise of enabling In-Memory Computing (IMC), but essential challenges due to the impact of device imperfection and device endurance have yet to be overcome. In this work, we demonstrate experimentally an RRAM-based IMC logic concept with strong resilience to RRAM variability, even after one million endurance cycles. Our work relies on a generalization of the concept of in-memory Scouting Logic, and we demonstrate it experimentally with up to 16 parallel devices (operands), a new milestone for RRAM in-memory logic. The SARS CoV-2 virus emerged at the end of 2019 and rapidly developed several mutated variants, specifically the Delta and Omicron, which demonstrate higher infectivity and escalating infection cases worldwide. The dominant transmission pathway of this virus is via human-to-human contact and aerosols, but another possible route is through contact with surfaces contaminated with SARS-CoV-2, often exhibiting long-period survival. Here we compare the adsorption capacities of the S1 and S2 subunits of the spike (S) protein from the original variant to that of the S1 subunit from the Delta and Omicron variants. The results clearly show a significant difference in adsorption capacity between the different variants, as well as between the S1 and S2 subunits. Overall, our study demonstrates that while the Omicron variant is able to adsorb much more successfully than the Delta, both variants show enhanced adsorption capacity than the original strain. We also examined the influence of pH conditions on the adsorption ability of the S1 subunit and found that adsorption was strongest at pH 7.4, which is the physiological pH. The main conclusion of this study is that there is a strong correlation between the adsorption capacity and the infectivity of the various SARS CoV-2 variants.

We present the first detection of pulsations from a neutron star in the submillimeter range. The source is the magnetar XTE J1810-197, observed with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) on 2020 February 27, 2020 July 9 and 2021 May 15. XTE J1810-197 is detected at 353 GHz ($\lambda=0.85\,$mm) in the three epochs, but not detected in the simultaneously-observed band at 666 GHz ($\lambda=0.45\,$mm). We measure an averaged flux density at 353 GHz of 6.7$\pm$1.0, 4.0$\pm$0.6, and 1.3$\pm$0.3 mJy and set 3$\sigma$ flux density upper limits at 666 GHz of 11.3, 4.7 and 4.3 mJy, at each of the three observing epochs, respectively. Combining close-in-time observations with the Effelsberg 100m and IRAM 30m telescopes covering non-contiguously from 6 to 225 GHz (5.0 cm$>\lambda>$1.33 mm), we investigate the spectral shape and frequency range of a potential spectral turn-up predicted by some pulsar radio emission models. The results demonstrate that the beamed radio emission from neutron stars can extend into the submillimeter regime, but are inconclusive on the existence and location of a potential spectral turn-up within the covered frequency range. The observed properties of the submillimeter emission resemble those of the longer wavelengths, and support a coherent mechanism for the production of pulsations at 353 GHz., Comment: 14 pages, 2 tables, 5 figures. Junctions composed of two crossed graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have been theoretically proposed as electron beam splitters where incoming electron waves in one GNR can be split coherently into propagating waves in \emph{two} outgoing terminals with nearly equal amplitude and zero back-scattering. Here we scrutinize this effect for devices composed of narrow zigzag GNRs taking explicitly into account the role of Coulomb repulsion that leads to spin-polarized edge states within mean-field theory. We show that the beam-splitting effect survives the opening of the well-known correlation gap and, more strikingly, that a \emph{spin-dependent} scattering potential emerges which spin-polarizes the transmitted electrons in the two outputs. A near-perfect polarization can be achieved by joining several junctions in series. Our findings suggest that GNRs are interesting building blocks in spintronics and quantum technologies with applications for interferometry and entanglement.

We consider operators acting on a UMD Banach lattice $X$ that have the same algebraic structure as the position and momentum operators associated with the harmonic oscillator $-\frac12\Delta + \frac12|x|^{2} $ acting on $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$. More precisely, we consider abstract harmonic oscillators of the form $\frac12 \sum _{j=1} ^{d}(A_{j}^{2}+B_{j}^{2})$ for tuples of operators $A=(A_{j})_{j=1} ^{d}$ and $B=(B_{k})_{k=1} ^{d}$, where $iA_j$ and $iB_k$ are assumed to generate $C_{0}$ groups and to satisfy the canonical commutator relations. We prove functional calculus results for these abstract harmonic oscillators that match classical H\"ormander spectral multiplier estimates for the harmonic oscillator $-\frac12\Delta + \frac12|x|^{2}$ on $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$. This covers situations where the underlying metric measure space is not doubling and the use of function spaces that are not particularly well suited to extrapolation arguments. For instance, as an application we treat the harmonic oscillator on mixed norm Bargmann-Fock spaces. Our approach is based on a transference principle for the Schr\"odinger representation of the Heisenberg group that allows us to reduce the problem to the study of the twisted Laplacian on the Bochner spaces $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{2d};X)$. This can be seen as a generalisation of the Stone-von Neumann theorem to UMD lattices $X$ that are not Hilbert spaces.

The evaluation of Alexander-Spanier cochains over formal simplices in a topological space leads to a notion of integration of Alexander-Spanier cohomology classes over \v{C}ech homology classes. The integral defines an explicit and non-degenerate pairing between the Alexander-Spanier cohomology and the \v{C}ech homology. Instead of working on the limits that define both groups, most of the discussion is carried out "at scale $\mathcal U$", for an open covering $\mathcal U$. As an application, we generalize a result of Manning to arbitrary compact spaces $X$: we prove that the topological entropy of $f \colon X \to X$ is bounded from below by the logarithm of the spectral radius of the map induced in the first \v{C}ech cohomology group.

In recent years, a considerable research effort has shown the energy benefits of implementing neural networks with memristors or other emerging memory technologies. However, for extreme-edge applications with high uncertainty, access to reduced amounts of data, and where explainable decisions are required, neural networks may not provide an acceptable form of intelligence. Bayesian reasoning can solve these concerns, but it is computationally expensive and, unlike neural networks, does not translate naturally to memristor-based architectures. In this work, we introduce, demonstrate experimentally on a fully fabricated hybrid CMOS-memristor system, and analyze a Bayesian machine designed for highly-energy efficient Bayesian reasoning. The architecture of the machine is obtained by writing Bayes' law in a way making its implementation natural by the principles of distributed memory and stochastic computing, allowing the circuit to function using solely local memory and minimal data movement. Measurements on a fabricated small-scale Bayesian machine featuring 2,048 memristors and 30,080 transistors show the viability of this approach and the possibility of overcoming the challenges associated with its design: the inherent imperfections of memristors, as well as the need to distribute very locally higher-than-nominal supply voltages. The design of a scaled-up version of the machine shows its outstanding energy efficiency on a real-life gesture recognition task: a gesture can be recognized using 5,000 times less energy than using a microcontroller unit. The Bayesian machine also features several desirable features, e.g., instant on/off operation, compatibility with low supply voltages, and resilience to single-event upsets. These results open the road for Bayesian reasoning as an attractive way for energy-efficient, robust, and explainable intelligence at the edge.

During the process of biomineralization, organisms utilize various biostrategies to enhance the mechanical durability of their skeletons. In this work, we establish that the presence of high-Mg nanoparticles embedded within lower Mg calcite matrices is a widespread strategy utilized by various organisms from different kingdoms and phyla to improve the mechanical properties of their high Mg calcite skeletons. We show that such phase separation and the formation of high-Mg nanoparticles are achieved through spinodal decomposition of an amorphous Mg calcite precursor. Such decomposition is independent of the biological characteristics of the studied organisms belonging to different phyla and even kingdoms, but rather originates from their similar chemical composition and a specific Mg content within their skeletons, which generally ranges from 14 to 48 mol percent of Mg. We show evidence of high Mg calcite nanoparticles in the cases of 6 biologically different organisms all demonstrating more than 14 mol percent Mg calcite, and consider it likely that this phenomenon is immeasurably more prevalent in nature. We also establish the absence of these high Mg nanoparticles in organisms whose Mg content is lower than 14 mol percent, providing further evidence that whether or not spinodal decomposition of an amorphous Mg calcite precursor takes place is determined by the amount of Mg it contains. The valuable knowledge gained from this biostrategy significantly impacts the understanding of how biominerals, though comprised of intrinsically brittle materials, can effectively resist fracture.

We construct a category that classifies compact Hausdorff spaces by their shape and finite topological spaces by their weak homotopy type.

Following up a recent study describing a flexible plasma source operated in planar geometry, the performance of a cold atmospheric plasma jet (CAPJ) matrix emanating radially from a soft cylindrical surface in the open air is presented. The plasma device, which has a set of small outlets produced in its side surface, has a length of 12 cm and an outer diameter of 5.4 cm. The dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) sustaining the plasma jets is generated in helium flowing between two coaxial electrodes, which are separated by both an insulating tape and a cylindrical wall made of polymer foam. Two operation modes are considered: four equidistant CAPJs at the same axial position (brush mode) and three aligned CAPJs at constant azimuthal angle (comb mode). All discharges, excited by 15 kHz-AC voltages at 3.8 kV in amplitude, have resulted in uniform lengths and intensities of the jets. Consumed discharge powers of between 0.1 and 1 W have been estimated from current-voltage measurements. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) has shown the preponderance of hydroxyl groups, nitrogen molecules and helium atoms in the active DBD region and the jet afterglow zone. This new design of CAPJ anticipates promising applications for treating the inner surface of hollow and delicate components for activation or healing purposes.

Given a compact metric space $X$, we associate to it an inverse sequence of finite $T_0$ topological spaces. The inverse limit of this inverse sequence contains a homeomorphic copy of $X$ that is a strong deformation retract. We provide a method to approximate the homology groups of $X$ and other algebraic invariants. Finally, we study computational aspects and the implementation of this method.

The implementation of current deep learning training algorithms is power-hungry, owing to data transfer between memory and logic units. Oxide-based RRAMs are outstanding candidates to implement in-memory computing, which is less power-intensive. Their weak RESET regime, is particularly attractive for learning, as it allows tuning the resistance of the devices with remarkable endurance. However, the resistive change behavior in this regime suffers many fluctuations and is particularly challenging to model, especially in a way compatible with tools used for simulating deep learning. In this work, we present a model of the weak RESET process in hafnium oxide RRAM and integrate this model within the PyTorch deep learning framework. Validated on experiments on a hybrid CMOS/RRAM technology, our model reproduces both the noisy progressive behavior and the device-to-device (D2D) variability. We use this tool to train Binarized Neural Networks for the MNIST handwritten digit recognition task and the CIFAR-10 object classification task. We simulate our model with and without various aspects of device imperfections to understand their impact on the training process and identify that the D2D variability is the most detrimental aspect. The framework can be used in the same manner for other types of memories to identify the device imperfections that cause the most degradation, which can, in turn, be used to optimize the devices to reduce the impact of these imperfections.

We present the analysis of a sample of \ha\,, \hb\ and \oii\ emission line galaxies from the \otelo\ survey, with masses typically below $log(M_*/M_\sun) \sim 9.4$ and redshifts between $z \sim 0.4$ and 1.43. We study the star formation rate, star formation rate density, and number density and their evolution with redshift. We obtain a robust estimate of the specific star formation rate -- stellar mass relation based on the lowest mass sample published so far. We also determine a flat trend of the star formation rate density and number density with redshift. Our results suggest a scenario of no evolution of the number density of galaxies, regardless of their masses, up to redshift $z\sim1.4$. This implies a gradual change of the relative importance of the star forming processes, from high-mass galaxies to low-mass galaxies, with decreasing redshift. We also find little or no variation of the star formation rate density in the redshift range of $0.4

We study a sample of H$\beta$ emission line sources at $z\sim$0.9 to identify the star-forming (SF) galaxies sample and characterise them in terms of line luminosity, stellar mass, SFR, and morphology. The final aim is to obtain the H$\beta$ luminosity function (LF) of the SF galaxies at this redshift. We used the instrument OSIRIS at GTC to obtain the pseudo spectra of emission line sources in the OTELO field. From these pseudo spectra, we identified the objects with H$\beta$ emission. As the resolution of the pseudo spectra allowed us to separate H$\beta$ from O[III], we derive the H$\beta$ flux without contamination. Using data from the extended OTELO catalogue, we discriminated AGNs and studied the SFR, the stellar mass, and the morphology of the SF galaxies. We find that our sample is located on the main sequence of SF galaxies. The sources are morphologically classified, mostly as disc-like galaxies (76%), and 90% of the sample are low-mass galaxies ($M_*<10^{10}\;\mathrm{M}_\odot$). The low-mass SF galaxies at $z \sim 0.9$ that were detected by OTELO present similar properties as low-mass SF galaxies in the local universe, suggesting that these kinds of objects do not have a favorite epoch of formation and star formation enhancement from $z \sim 1$ to now. Our sample of 40 H$\beta$ SF galaxies includes the faintest H$\beta$ emitters detected so far. This allows us to constrain the faint end of the LF for the H$\beta$ line alone with a minimum luminosity of $\log L = 39 \;\mathrm{erg\,s}^{-1}$, which is a hundred times fainter than previous surveys. The dust-corrected OTELO H$\beta$ LF established the faint-end slope as $\alpha =-1.36\pm 0.15$. We increased the scope of the analysis to the bright end by adding ancillary data from the literature, which was not dust-corrected in this case. Solar twins are key in different areas of astrophysics, however only just over a hundred were identified and well-studied in the last two decades. In this work, we take advantage of the very precise \textit{Gaia} (DR2/EDR3), Tycho and 2MASS photometric systems to create the Inti survey of new solar twins in the Northern Hemisphere. The spectra of our targets were initially obtained with spectrographs of moderate resolution (ARCES and Goodman spectrographs with $R$ = 31500 and 11930, respectively) to find the best solar twin candidates and then observed at McDonald Observatory with higher resolving power (TS23, $R$ = 60000) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR $\sim$ 300-500). The stellar parameters were estimated through the differential spectroscopic equilibrium relative to the Sun, which allow us to achieve a high internal precision ($\sigma(T_{\rm{eff}})$ = 15 K, $\sigma(\log g)$ = 0.03 dex, $\sigma$([Fe/H]) = 0.01 dex, and $\sigma(v_{t})$ = 0.03 km s$^{-1}$). We propose a new class of stars with evolution similar to the Sun: \textit{solar proxy}, which is useful to perform studies related to the evolution of the Sun, such as its rotational and magnetic evolution. Its definition is based on metallicity ($-$0.15 dex $\leq$ [Fe/H] $\leq$ +0.15 dex) and mass (0.95 M$_{\odot}$ $\leq$ M $\leq$ 1.05 M$_{\odot}$) constraints, thus assuring that the star follows a similar evolutionary path as the Sun along the main sequence. Based on this new definition, we report 70 newly identified solar proxies, 46 solar analogs and 13 solar-type stars.
