The concept of "effective mass" is frequently used for the simplification of complex lumped parameter systems (discrete dynamical systems) as well as materials that have complicated microstructural features. From the perspective of wave propagation, it is claimed that for some bodies described as metamaterials, the corresponding "effective mass" can be frequency dependent, negative or it may not even be a scalar quantity. The procedure has even led some authors to suggest that Newton's second law needs to be modified within the context of classical continuum mechanics. Such absurd physical conclusions are a consequence of appealing to the notion of "effective mass" with a preconception for the constitutive structure of the metamaterial and using a correct mathematical procedure. We show that such unreasonable physical conclusions would not arise if we were to use the appropriate "effective constitutive relation" for the metamaterial, rather than use the concept of "effective mass" with an incorrect predetermined constitutive relation.

We propose a class of auxetic three-dimensional lattice structures. The elastic microstructure can be designed in order to have omni-directional Poisson's ratio arbitrarily close to the stability limit -1. The cubic behavior of the periodic system has been fully characterized; the minumum and maximum Poisson's ratio and the associated principal directions are given as a function of the microstructural parameters. The initial microstructure is then modified into a body centered-cubic system that can achieve a Poisson's ratio lower than -1 and that can also behave as an isotropic three-dimensional auxetic structure., Comment: 24 pages, 16 Figures (33 subfigures)

By applying density functional theory (DFT) approximations, we present a first-principles investigation of elastic properties for the experimentally verified phases of a metallic perovskite LaNiO$_{3}$. In order to improve the accuracy of calculations, at first we select the most appropriate DFT approaches according to their performance in reproducing the low-temperature crystalline structure and the electronic density of states observed for the bulk LaNiO$_{3}$. Then, we continue with the single-crystal elastic constants and mechanical stability for the most common rhombohedral as well as high-temperature cubic and strain-induced monoclinic phases. Together with the calculated single-crystal elastic constants, the deduced polycrystalline properties, including bulk, shear, and Young's moduli, Poisson's ratio, Vickers hardness, sound velocities, Debye temperature, and anisotropy indexes, remedy the existing gap of knowledge about the elastic and mechanical behaviour of LaNiO$_{3}$, at least from a theoretical standpoint., Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables

We obtain values for the shear coefficient both below and above the critical frequency by comparing the results of the Timoshenko beam theory with experimental data published recently. The maximum force that a crawling cell can exert on a substrate is a quantity of interest in cell biomechanics. One way of quantifying this force is to allow the cell to crawl against a measurable and adjustable restraining force until the cell is no longer able to move in a direction opposite to the applied force. Fukui et al.[1] reported on an experiment where amoeboid cells were imaged while they crawled against an artificial gravity field created by a centrifuge. An unexpected observation was that the net applied force on the amoeba did not seem to be the primary factor that limited its ability to climb. Instead, it appeared that the amoeba stalled when it was no longer able to support a pseudopodium against the applied gravity field. The high g-load bend the pseudopodium thereby preventing its attachment to the target point directly ahead of the cell. In this paper we further refine this idea by identifying the bending of the pseudopodium with the onset of elastic instability of a beam under its own weight. It is shown that the principal features of the experiment may be understood through this model and an estimate for the limiting g-load in reasonable accord with the experimental measurements is recovered., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

Lower bounds for the factors entering the standard notions of shear and torsion stiffness for a linearly elastic rod are established in a new and simple way. The proofs are based on the following criterion to identify the stiffness parameters entering rod theory: the rod's stored-energy density per unit length expressed in terms of force and moment resultants should equal the stored-energy density per unit length expressed in terms of stress components of a Saint-Venant cylinder subject to either flexure or torsion, according to the case. It is shown that the shear factor is always greater than one, whatever the cross section, a fact that is customarily stated without proof in textbooks of structure mechanics; and that the torsion factor is also greater than one, except when the cross section is a circle or a circular annulus, a fact that is usually proved making use of Saint-Venant's solution in terms of displacement components., Comment: 1 figure

We study the Korn-Poincar\'e inequality: \|u\|_{W^{1,2}(S^h)} < C_h \|D(u)\|_{L^2(S^h)}, in domains S^h that are shells of small thickness of order h, around an arbitrary smooth and closed hypersurface S in R^n. By D(u) we denote the symmetric part of the gradient \nabla u, and we assume the tangential boundary conditions: u\vec n^h = 0 on \partial S^h. We prove that C_h remains uniformly bounded as h tends to 0, for vector fields u in any family of cones (with angle <\pi/2, uniform in h) around the orthogonal complement of extensions of Killing vector fields on S. We also show that this condition is optimal, as in turn every Killing field admits a family of extensions u^h, for which the ratio: \|u^h\|_{W^{1,2}(S^h)} / \|D(u^h)\|_{L^2(S^h)} blows up as h tends to 0, even if the domains S^h are not rotationally symmetric., Comment: 30 pages, 1 figure

Eshelby showed that if an inclusion is of elliptic or ellipsoidal shape then for any uniform elastic loading the field inside the inclusion is uniform. He then conjectured that the converse is true, i.e., that if the field inside an inclusion is uniform for all uniform loadings, then the inclusion is of elliptic or ellipsoidal shape. We call this the weak Eshelby conjecture. In this paper we prove this conjecture in three dimensions. In two dimensions, a stronger conjecture, which we call the strong Eshelby conjecture, has been proved: If the field inside an inclusion is uniform for a single uniform loading, then the inclusion is of elliptic shape. We give an alternative proof of Eshelby's conjecture in two dimensions using a hodographic transformation. As a consequence of the weak Eshelby's conjecture, we prove in two and three dimensions a conjecture of Polya and Szego on the isoperimetric inequalities for the polarization tensors. The Polya-Szego conjecture asserts that the inclusion whose electrical polarization tensor has the minimal trace takes the shape of a disk or a ball., Comment: 22 pages, 1 figure

In the present paper, a class of partial differential equations related to various plate and rod problems is studied by Lie transformation group methods. A system of equations determining the generators of the admitted point Lie groups (symmetries) is derived. A general statement of the associated group-classification problem is given. A simple intrinsic relation is deduced allowing to recognize easily the variational symmetries among the ''ordinary'' symmetries of a self-adjoint equation of the class examined. Explicit formulae for the conserved currents of the corresponding (via Noether's theorem) conservation laws are suggested. Solutions of group-classification problems are presented for subclasses of equations of the foregoing type governing stability and vibration of plates, rods and fluid conveying pipes resting on variable elastic foundations and compressed by axial forces. The obtained group-classification results are used to derive conservation laws and group-invariant solutions readily applicable in plate statics or rod dynamics., Comment: 21 pages, Submitted to Int.
