We compute the algebraic Morava K-theory ring of split special orthogonal and spin groups. In particular, we establish certain stabilization results for the Morava K-theory of special orthogonal and spin groups. Besides, we apply these results to study Morava motivic decompositions of orthogonal Grassmannians. For instance, we determine all indecomposable summands of the Morava motives of a generic quadric.

Based on the work of Conrad-Gabber-Prasad, the paper deals with the geometry of particular pseudo-semisimple groups, namely those which can be written as quotient of Weil restriction of semisimple groups. In this article we study the involutions of $\mathrm{O}(V,\mathrm{q})$, an orthogonal group for a vector space $V$ with quadratic form $\mathrm{q}$ over a field of characteristic 2. The classification proceeds by discussing conjugacy classes of involutions arising as a product of transvections, involutions with respect to a hyperbolic space, and involutions acting nontrivially in the radical of $V$. We achieve a complete classification of the conjugacy classes of involutions when the quadratic space $(V,\mathrm{q})$ is non-defective, and conclude with a discussion of the defective case.

Let $C_1,\ldots,C_e$ be noncentral conjugacy classes of the algebraic group $G=SL_n(k)$ defined over a sufficiently large field $k$, and let $\Omega:=C_1\times \ldots \times C_e$. This paper determines necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a tuple $(x_1,\ldots,x_e)\in\Omega$ such that $\langle x_1,\ldots,x_e\rangle$ is Zariski dense in $G$. We establish some results on the structure of the geometric unipotent radicals of pseudo-reductive k-groups. In particular, our main theorem gives bounds on the nilpotency class of geometric unipotent radicals of standard pseudo-reductive groups, which are sharp in many cases. A major part of the proof rests upon consideration of the following situation: let k' be a purely inseparable field extension of k of degree p^e and let G denote the Weil restriction of scalars R_{k'/k}(G') of a reductive k'-group G'. In this paper, we consider the order m k-automorphisms of SL(2,k). We first characterize the forms that order m k-automorphisms of SL(2,k) take and then we simple conditions on matrices A and B, involving eigenvalues and the field that the entries of A and B lie in, that are equivalent to isomorphy between the order m k-automorphisms Inn_A and Inn_B. We prove that Chevalley group over the field $F$ of zero characteristic possess $R_{\infty}$ property, if $F$ has torsion group of automorphisms or $F$ is an algebraically closed field which has finite transcendence degree over $\mathbb{Q}$. In this paper we present an algorithm for determining whether a subgroup H of a non-connected reductive group G is G-completely reducible. The algorithm consists of a series of reductions; at each step, we perform operations involving connected groups, such as checking whether a certain subgroup of G^0 is G^0 -cr. Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. We study a generalization of the notion of G-complete reducibility in the context of Steinberg endomorphisms of G. Our main theorem extends a special case of a rationality result in this setting.

This paper presents a method for computing the Killing form of an isotropic Lie algebra defined over an arbitrary field based on the Killing form of a subalgebra containing its anisotropic kernel. This approach allows for streamlined formulas for many Lie algebras of types E6 and E7 and yields a unified formula for all Lie algebras of inner type E6, including the anisotropic ones.

Let $V$ be a $2m$-dimensional symplectic vector space over an algebraically closed field $K$. Let $\mbb_n^{(f)}$ be the two-sided ideal of the Brauer algebra $\mbb_n(-2m)$ over $K$ generated by $e_1e_3... e_{2f-1}$, where $0\leq f\leq [n/2]$. Let $\mathcal{HT}_{f}^{\otimes n}$ be the subspace of partially harmonic tensors of valence $f$ in $V^{\otimes n}$. In this paper, we prove that $\dim\mathcal{HT}_f^{\otimes n}$ and $\dim\End_{KSp(V)}\Bigl(V^{\otimes n}/V^{\otimes n}\mbb_n^{(f)}\Bigr)$ are both independent of $K$, and the natural homomorphism from $\mbb_n(-2m)/\mbb_n^{(f)}$ to $\End_{KSp(V)}\Bigl(V^{\otimes n}/V^{\otimes n}\mbb_n^{(f)}\Bigr)$ is always surjective. We show that $\mathcal{HT}_{f}^{\otimes n}$ has a Weyl filtration and is isomorphic to the dual of $V^{\otimes n}\mbb_n^{(f)}/V^{\otimes n}\mbb_n^{(f+1)}$ as a $Sp(V)$-$(\mbb_n(-2m)/\mbb_n^{(f+1)})$-bimodule. We obtain a $Sp(V)$-$\mbb_n$-bimodules filtration of $V^{\otimes n}$ such that each successive quotient is isomorphic to some $\nabla(\lam)\otimes z_{g,\lam}\mbb_n$ with $\lam\vdash n-2g$, $\ell(\lam)\leq m$ and $0\leq g\leq [n/2]$, where $\nabla(\lam)$ is the co-Weyl module associated to $\lam$ and $z_{g,\lam}$ is an explicitly constructed maximal vector of weight $\lam$. As a byproduct, we show that each right $\mbb_n$-module $z_{g,\lam}\mbb_n$ is integrally defined and stable under base change.

We show four formulas for calculating the orders of finite reductive monoids with zero. As applications, these formulas are then used to calculate the orders of finite reductive monoids induced from the $F_q$-split $\J$-irreducible monoids $\overline {K^*\rho(G_0)}$ where $G_0$ is a simple algebraic group over the algebraic closure of $F_q$, and $\rho: G_0\to GL(V)$ is the irreducible representation associated with any dominant weight. Finally, we give an explicit formula for the orders of finite symplectic monoids associated with the last fundamental dominant weight of type $C_l$; the connections to $H$-polynomials and Betti numbers are shown.

In this article we study asymptotic properties of certain discrete groups $\Gamma$ acting by isometries on a product $\XX=\XX_1\times \XX_2$ of locally compact Hadamard spaces. The motivation comes from the fact that Kac-Moody groups over finite fields, which can be seen as generalizations of arithmetic groups over function fields, belong to this class of groups. Hence one may ask whether classical properties of discrete subgroups of higher rank Lie groups as in [MR1437472] and [MR1933790] hold in this context. In the first part of the paper we describe the structure of the geometric limit set of $\Gamma$ and prove statements analogous to the results of Benoist in [MR1437472]. The second part is concerned with the exponential growth rate $\delta_\theta(\Gamma)$ of orbit points in $\XX$ with a prescribed so-called "slope" $\theta\in (0,\pi/2)$, which appropriately generalizes the critical exponent in higher rank. In analogy to Quint's result in [MR1933790] we show that the homogeneous extension $\Psi_\Gamma$ to $\RR_{\ge 0}^2$ of $\delta_\theta(\Gamma)$ as a function of $\theta$ is upper semi-continuous and concave., Comment: 27 pages, to appear in Geometry & Topology

We refine the notion of variety over the "field with one element" developed by C. Soul\'e by introducing a grading in the associated functor to the category of sets, and show that this notion becomes compatible with the geometric viewpoint developed by J. Tits. We then solve an open question of C. Soul\'e by proving, using results of J. Tits and C. Chevalley, that Chevalley group schemes are examples of varieties over a quadratic extension of the above "field"., Comment: 26 pages

Let $n\geq 4$ be an even integer. Let $K$ be a field with $\cha K\neq 2$ and $q$ an invertible element in $K$ such that $\prod_{i=1}^{n-1}(1+q^i)\neq 0$. In this paper, we study the decomposition numbers over $K$ of the Iwahori--Hecke algebra $\HH_q(D_n)$ of type $D_n$. We obtain some equalities which relate its decomposition numbers with certain Schur elements and the decomposition numbers of various Iwahori--Hecke algebras of type $A$ with the same parameter $q$. When $\cha K=0$, this completely determine all of its decomposition numbers. In particular, we provide explicit necessary and sufficient conditions that anisotropic groups of a given type appear as anisotropic kernels of semisimple groups of a given Tits index. Let G be a unipotent algebraic subgroup of some GL_m(C) defined over Q. We describe an algorithm for finding a finite set of generators of the subgroup G(Z) = G \cap GL_m(Z). This is based on a new proof of the result (in more general form due to Borel and Harish-Chandra) that such a finite generating set exists., Comment: 19 pages

Let G be a semisimple algebraic group over a field K whose characteristic is very good for G, and let sigma be any G-equivariant isomorphism from the nilpotent variety to the unipotent variety; the map sigma is known as a Springer isomorphism. Let y in G(K), let Y in Lie(G)(K), and write C_y = C_G(y) and C_Y= C_G(Y) for the centralizers. We show that the center of C_y and the center of C_Y are smooth group schemes over K. The existence of a Springer isomorphism is used to treat the crucial cases where y is unipotent and where Y is nilpotent. Now suppose G to be quasisplit, and write C for the centralizer of a rational regular nilpotent element. We obtain a description of the normalizer N_G(C) of C, and we show that the automorphism of Lie(C) determined by the differential of sigma at zero is a scalar multiple of the identity; these results verify observations of J-P. We use the fact that a projective half-spin representation of $Spin_{12}$ has an open orbit to generalize Pfister's result on quadratic forms of dimension 12 in $I^3$ to orthogonal involutions.

The totally nonnegative part of a partial flag variety G/P has been shown by the first author to be a union of semi-algebraic cells. Moreover she showed that the closure of a cell is the union of smaller cells. In this note we provide glueing maps for each of the cells to prove that the totally nonnegative part of G/P is a CW complex. This generalizes a result of Postnikov, Speyer and the second author for Grassmannians., Comment: 14 pages

Let $A$ be an Azumaya algebra over a field. If $G$ is the group of automorphisms of $A$ and $X$ denotes a projective homogeneous variety under $G$, we construct in a very explicit way and under suitable hypotheses a bundle $\mathcal{V}$ on $S$, where $S$ is a (generalized) Severi-Brauer variety associated to $A$, and a canonical isomorphism between $X$ and a flag bundle on $\mathcal{V}$. We exploit various inclusions of algebraic groups to give a new construction of groups of type E8, determine the Killing forms of the resulting E8's, and define an invariant of central simple algebras of degree 16 with orthogonal involution "in I^3", equivalently, groups of type D8 with a half-spin representation defined over the base field. The determination of the Killing form is done by restricting the adjoint representation to various twisted forms of PGL2 and requires very little computation. We present an alternative approach to the result of Guentner, Higson, and Weinberger concerning the Baum-Connes conjecture for finitely generated subgroups of SL(2,C). Using finite-dimensional methods, we show that the Baum-Connes assembly map for such groups is an isomorphism.

It is shown that the classification theorems for semisimple algebraic groups in characteristic zero can be derived quite simply and naturally from the corresponding theorems for Lie algebras by using a little of the theory of tensor categories. This article is extracted from Milne 2007.

We study the possibility of applying a finite-dimensionality argument in order to address parts of the Baum-Connes conjecture for finitely generated linear groups. This gives an alternative approach to the results of Guentner, Higson, and Weinberger concerning the Baum-Connes conjecture for linear groups. For any finitely generated linear group over a field of characteristic zero we construct a proper action on a finite-asymptotic-dimensional CAT(0)-space, provided that for such a group its unipotent subgroups have `bounded composition rank'. The CAT(0)-space in our construction is a finite product of symmetric spaces and affine Bruhat-Tits buildings. For the case of finitely generated subgroup of SL(2,C) the result is sharpened to show that the Baum-Connes assembly map is an isomorphism.

For every absolutely irreducible orthogonal representation of a twisted form of SL2 over a field of characteristic zero, we compute the "unique" symmetric bilinear form that is invariant under the group action. We also prove the analogous result for Weyl modules in prime characteristic (including characteristic 2) and an isomorphism between two symmetric bilinear forms given by binomial coefficients., Comment: Supporting contextual material is substantially revised since v2; proofs of the main results remain the same. We define and study the essential dimension of an algebraic stack. We compute the essential dimension of the stacks Mgn and MgnBar of smooth, or stable, n-pointed curves of genus g. We also prove a general lower bound for the essential dimension of algebraic groups with a non-trivial center. Using this, we find new exponential lower bounds for the essential dimension of spin groups and new formulas for the essential dimension of some finite p-groups. Finally, we apply the lower bound for spin groups to the theory of the Witt ring of quadratic forms over a field k., Comment: 52 pages

Certain subgroups of the groups $Aut(F_n)$ of automorphisms of a free group $F_n$ are considered. Comparing Alexander polynomials of two poly-free groups $Cb_4^+$ and $P_4$ we prove that these groups are not isomorphic, despite the fact that they have a lot of common properties. This answers the question of Cohen-Pakianathan-Vershinin-Wu from \cite{CVW}. The questions of linearity of subgroups of $Aut(F_n)$ are considered. As an application of the properties of poison groups in the sense of Formanek and Procesi, we show that the groups of the type $Aut(G*\mathbb Z)$ for certain groups $G$ and the subgroup of $IA$-automorphisms $IA(F_n)\subset Aut(F_n)$ are not linear for $n\geq 3$. This generalizes the recent result of Pettet that $IA(F_n)$ are not linear for $n\geq 5$., Comment: 11 pages

Let G be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero or positive odd, good characteristic. Let B be a Borel subgroup of G. We show that the spherical conjugacy classes of G intersect only the double cosets of B in G corresponding to involutions in the Weyl group of G. This result is used to prove that for a spherical conjugacy class O with dense B-orbit v_0 contained in BwB there holds l(w)+rk(1-w)=dim(O) extending a characterization of spherical conjugacy classes obtained by N. Cantarini, M. The "canonical dimension" of an algebraic group over a field by definition is the maximum of the canonical dimensions of principal homogenous spaces under that group. Over a field of characteristic zero, we prove that the canonical dimension of the projective linear group PGL_6 is 3. We give two distinct proofs, both of which rely on the birational classification of rational surfaces over a nonclosed field. One of the proofs involves taking a novel look at del Pezzo surfaces of degree 6.

This paper concerns regular connections on trivial algebraic G-principal fiber bundles over the infinitesimal punctured disc, where G is a connected reductive linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We show that the pull-back of every regular connection to an appropriate covering of the infinitesimal punctured disc is gauge equivalent to a connection of the form X z^{-1}dz for some X in the Lie algebra of G. We may even arrange that the only rational eigenvalue of ad X is zero. Our results allow a classification of regular SL_n-connections up to gauge equivalence., Comment: 20 pages

The affine Schur algebra $\widetilde{S}(n,r)$ (of type A) over a field $K$ is defined to be the endomorphism algebra of the tensor space over the extended affine Weyl group of type $A_{r-1}$. By the affine Schur-Weyl duality it is isomorphic to the image of the representation map of the $\mathcal{U}(\hat{\mathfrak{gl}}_{n})$ action on the tensor space when $K$ is the field of complex numbers. We show that $\widetilde{S}(n,r)$ can be defined in another two equivalent ways. Namely, it is the image of the representation map of the semigroup algebra $K\widetilde{GL}_{n,a}$ (defined in Section \ref{S:semigroups}) action on the tensor space and it equals to the 'dual' of a certain formal coalgebra related to this semigroup.
