S-structures on Lie algebras, introduced by Vinberg, represent a broad generalization of the notion of gradings by abelian groups. Gradings by, not necessarily reduced, root systems provide many examples of natural S-structures. Here we deal with a situation not covered by these gradings: the short (SL2xSL2)-structures, where the reductive group is the simplest semisimple but not simple reductive group. The Kurosh theorem for groups provides the structure of any subgroup of a free product of groups and its proof relies on Bass-Serre theory of groups acting on trees. In the case of Lie algebras, such a general theory does not exists and the Kurosh theorem is false in general, as it was first noticed by Shirshov. However, we prove that, for a class of positively graded Lie algebras satisfying certain local properties in cohomology, such a structure theorem holds true for subalgebras generated in degree 1. Such class consists of Lie algebras, which have all the subalgebras generated in degree $1$ that are Koszul.

A set grading on the split simple Lie algebra of type $D_{13}$, that cannot be realized as a group-grading, is constructed by splitting the set of positive roots into a disjoint union of pairs of orthogonal roots, following a pattern provided by the lines of the projective plane over $GF(3)$. This answers in the negative Question 1.11 in Elduque-Kochetov monograph (2013). Similar non-group gradings are obtained for types $D_n$ with $n$ congruent to 1 modulo 12, by substituting the lines in the projective plane by blocks of suitable Steiner systems., Comment: 11 pages

We present a new algorithm to decide isomorphism between finite graded algebras. For a broad class of nilpotent Lie algebras, we demonstrate that it runs in time polynomial in the order of the input algebras. We introduce heuristics that often dramatically improve the performance of the algorithm and report on an implementation in Magma.

Given a fine abelian group grading on a finite dimensional simple Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, with universal grading group $G$, it is shown that the induced grading by the free group $G/\tor(G)$ is a grading by a (not necessarily reduced) root system. The paper gives the complete characterization of all graded nilpotent Lie algebras with infinite-dimensional Tanaka prolongation as extensions of graded nilpotent Lie algebras of lower dimension by means of a commutative ideal. We introduce a notion of weak characteristics of a vector distribution and prove that if a bracket-generating distribution of constant type does not have non-zero complex weak characteristics, then its symmetry algebra is necessarily finite-dimensional. Locally affine Lie algebras are generalizations of affine Kac--Moody algebras with Cartan subalgebras of infinite rank whose root system is locally affine. In this note we study a class of representations of locally affine algebras generalizing integrable highest weight modules. In particular, we construct such an integrable representation for each integral weight not vanishing on the center and show that, over the complex numbers, we thus obtain unitary representations w.r.t. a unitary real form. We also use Yoshii's recent classification of locally affine root systems to derive a classification of so-called minimal locally affine Lie algebras and give realizations as twisted loop algebras.

During the last decades algebraization of space turned out to be a promising tool at the interface between Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. Starting with works by Gel'fand-Kolmogoroff and Gel'fand-Naimark, this branch developed as from the fortieth in two directions: algebraic characterization of usual geometric space on the one hand, and algebraically defined noncommutative space, which is known to be tightly related with e.g. quantum gravity and super string theory, on the other hand. In this note, we combine both aspects, prove a superversion of Shanks and Pursell's classical result stating that any isomorphism of the Lie algebras of compactly supported vector fields is implemented by a diffeomorphism of underlying manifolds. We thus provide a super Lie algebraic characterization of super and graded spaces and describe explicitly isomorphisms of the super Lie algebras of super vector fields., Comment: 11 pages

We define a graded twisted-coassociative coproduct on the tensor algebra $TW$ of any $\Z^n$-graded vector space $W$. If $W$ is the desuspension space $\da V$ of a graded vector space $V$, the coderivations (resp. quadratic ``degree 1'' codifferentials, arbitrary odd codifferentials) of this coalgebra are 1-to-1 with sequences $\zp_s$, $s\ge 1$, of $s$-linear maps on $V$ (resp. $\Z^n$-graded Loday structures on $V$, sequences that we call Loday infinity structures on $V$). We prove a minimal model theorem for Loday infinity algebras, investigate Loday infinity morphisms, and observe that the $\op{Lod}_{\infty}$ category contains the $\op{L}_{\infty}$ category as a subcategory. Moreover, the graded Lie bracket of coderivations gives rise to a graded Lie ``stem'' bracket on the cochain spaces of graded Loday, Loday infinity, and $2n$-ary graded Loday algebras (the latter extend the corresponding Lie algebras in the sense of Michor and Vinogradov). These algebraic structures have square zero with respect to the stem bracket, so that we obtain natural cohomological theories that have good properties with respect to formal deformations. The stem bracket restricts to the graded Nijenhuis-Richardson and--up to isomorphism--to the Grabowski-Marmo brackets (the last bracket extends the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket to the space of graded antisymmetric first order polydifferential operators), and it encodes, beyond the already mentioned cohomologies, those of graded Lie, graded Poisson, graded Jacobi, Lie infinity, as well as that of $2n$-ary graded Lie algebras., Comment: 24 pages

We describe all the fine group gradings, up to equivalence, on the Lie algebra $\mathfrak d_4$. This problem is equivalent to finding the maximal abelian diagonalizable subgroups of the automorphism group of $\mathfrak d_4$. We prove that there are fourteen by using two different viewpoints. The first approach is computational: we get a full description of the gradings by using a particular implementation of the automorphism group of the Dynkin diagram of $\mathfrak d_4$ and some algebraic groups stuff. We compute explicitly the adjoint cohomology of two N-graded Lie algebras of maximal class (infinite dimensional filiform Lie algebras) m_0 and m_2. It is known that up to an isomorphism there are only three N-graded Lie algebras of the maximal class. The third algebra from this list is the "positive" part L_1 of the Witt (or Virasoro) algebra and its adjoint cohomology was computed earlier by Feigin and Fukhs. We show that the total space H*(m_j,m_j) is "almost" isomorphic to the completed tensor product of the algebra m_j by scalar cohomology space H^*(m_j), j=0,2.

Centreless Lie tori have been used by E. Neher to construct all extended affine Lie algebras (EALAs). In this article, we study notions of isotopes and isotopy for centreless Lie tori, and we use these notions, along with Neher's construction, to show that there is a 1-1 correspondence between centreless Lie tori up to isotopy and families of EALAs up to isomorphism. Also, centreless Lie tori can be coordinatized by unital algebras that are in general nonassociative, and, for many types of centreless Lie tori, there are classical notions of isotopes and isotopy for the coordinate algebras. We show for those types that an isotope of the Lie torus is coordinatized by an isotope of its coordinate algebra. In writing the article, we have not assumed prior knowledge of the theories of EALAs, Lie tori or isotopy. An important theorem in the theory of infinite dimensional Lie algebras states that any affine Kac-Moody algebra can be realized (that is to say constructed explicitly) using loop algebras. In this paper, we consider the corresponding problem for a class of Lie algebras called extended affine Lie algebras (EALAs) that generalize affine algebras. EALAs occur in families that are constructed from centreless Lie tori, so the realization problem for EALAs reduces to the realization problem for centreless Lie tori. We show that all but one family of centreless Lie tori can be realized using multiloop algebras (in place of loop algebras). We also obtain necessary and sufficient for two centreless Lie tori realized in this way to be isotopic, a relation that corresponds to isomorphism of the corresponding families of EALAs., Comment: Marginal notes (for tex labels) deleted

Thin Lie algebras are Lie algebras over a field, graded over the positive integers and satisfying a certain narrowness condition. In particular, all homogeneous components have dimension one or two, and are called diamonds in the latter case. The first diamond is the component of degree one, and the second diamond can only occur in degrees 3, 5, q or 2q-1, where q is a power of the characteristic of the underlying field. Here we consider several classes of thin Lie algebras with second diamond in degree q. In particular, we identify the Lie algebras in one of these classes with suitable loop algebras of certain Albert-Zassenhaus Lie algebras. We also apply a deformation technique to recover other thin Lie algebras previously produced as loop algebras of certain graded Hamiltonian Lie algebras., Comment: 28 pages

We discuss Massey products in a N-graded Lie algebra cohomology. One of the main examples is the positive part L_1 of the Witt algebra $W$. We consider an associated graded algebra m_0 of L_1 with respect to the descending central series and prove that H*(m_0) is generated with respect to non-trivial Massey products by one cohomology H^1(m_0).

We present an explicit description of the 'fine group gradings' (i.e. group gradings which cannot be further refined) of the real forms of the semisimple Lie algebras $sl(4,\C)$, $sp(4,\C)$, and $o(4,\C)$. All together 12 real Lie algebras are considered, and the total of 44 of their fine group gradings are listed. The inclusions $sl(4,\C)\supset sp(4,\C)\supset o(4,\C)$ are an important tool in our presentation. Thin coverings are a method of constructing graded-simple modules from simple (ungraded) modules. After a general discussion, we classify the thin coverings of (quasifinite) simple modules over associative algebras graded by finite abelian groups. The classification uses the representation theory of cyclotomic quantum tori. We close with an application to representations of multiloop Lie algebras.

We define and study the Kirillov--Reshetikhin modules for algebras of type $G_2$. We compute the graded character of these modules and verify that they are in accordance with the conjectures in math.QA/981202 and math.QA/0102113. These results give the first complete description of families of Kirillov--Reshetikhin modules whose isotypical components have multiplicity bigger than one., Comment: 19 pages

A classical problem in algebraic deformation theory is whether an infinitesimal deformation can be extended to a formal deformation. The answer to this question is usually given in terms of Massey powers. If all Massey powers of the cohomology class determined by the infinitesimal deformation vanish, then the deformation extends to a formal one. We consider another approach to this problem, by constructing a miniversal deformation of the algebra. In this paper, we consider the versal deformations of three dimensional Lie algebras. We classify Lie algebras and study their deformations by using linear algebra techniques to study the cohomology. We will focus on how the deformations glue the space of all such structures together. This space is known as the moduli space. We discover a class of projective self-dual algebraic varieties. Namely, we consider actions of isotropy groups of complex symmetric spaces on the projectivized nilpotent varieties of isotropy modules. For them, we classify all orbit closures $X$ such that $X=\check X$ where $\check X$ is the projective dual of $X$. For every profinite group $G$, we construct two covariant functors $\Delta_G$ and ${\bf {\mathcal {AP}}}_G$ from the category of commutative rings with identity to itself, and show that indeed they are equivalent to the functor $W_G$ introduced in [A. Dress and C. Siebeneicher, The Burnside ring of profinite groups and the Witt vectors construction, {\it Adv. in Math.} {\bf{70}} (1988), 87-132]. We call $\Delta_G$ the generalized Burnside-Grothendieck ring functor and ${\bf {\mathcal {AP}}}_G$ the aperiodic ring functor (associated with $G$). In case $G$ is abelian, we also construct another functor ${\bf Ap}_G$ from the category of commutative rings with identity to itself as a generalization of the functor ${\bf Ap}$ introduced in [K. In this paper, we develop the theory of the necklace ring and the logarithmic function. Regarding the necklace ring, we introduce the necklace ring functor $Nr$ from the category of special $\ld$-rings into the category of special $\ld$-rings and then study the associated Adams operators. As far as the logarithmic function is concerned, we generalize the results in Bryant's paper (J. Algebra. 253 (2002); no.1, 167-188) to the case of graded Lie (super)algebras with a group action by applying the Euler-Poincar\'e principle.

A new class of infinite dimensional simple Lie algebras over a field with characteristic 0 are constructed. These are examples of non-graded Lie algebras. The isomorphism classes of these Lie algebras are determined. The structure space of these algebras is given explicitly., Comment: 16 pages

Let G be a compact Lie group. Let M be a smooth G-manifold and V --> M be an oriented G-equivariant vector bundle. One defines the spaces of equivariant forms with generalized coefficients on V and M. An equivariant Thom form $\theta$ on V is a compactly supported closed equivariant form such that its integral along the fibres is the constant function 1 on M. Such a Thom form was constructed by Mathai and Quillen. Its restriction to M gives a representative of the equivariant Euler class of V. In the supergeometric situation we give proper definitions of all the objects involved. But, in this case a Thom form doesn't always exist. In this article, when the action of G on V is sufficiently non-trivial, we construct such a Thom form with generalized coefficients. We use it to construct an equivariant Euler form of V and to generalize Berline-Vergne's localization formula to the supergeometric situation., Comment: 56 pages

In this paper, we generalize a result by Berman and Billig on weight modules over Lie algebras with polynomial multiplication. More precisely, we show that a highest weight module with an exp-polynomial ``highest weight'' has finite dimensional weight spaces. We also get a class of irreducible weight modules with finite dimensional weight spaces over generalized Virasoro algebras which do not occur over the classical Virasoro algebra.

We consider versal deformations of 0|3-dimensional L-infinity algebras, which correspond precisely to ordinary (non-graded) three dimensional Lie algebras. The classification of such algebras over C is well known, although we shall give a derivation of this classification using an approach of treating them as L-infinity algebras. Because the symmetric algebra of a three dimensional odd vector space contains terms only of exterior degree less than or equal to three, the construction of versal deformations can be carried out completely. We give a characterization of the moduli space of Lie algebras using deformation theory as a guide to understanding the picture., Comment: 21 pages

The Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type A acts on tensor product space of the natural representation of the quantum superalgebra U_q(gl(m,n)). We show this action of the Hecke algebra and the action of U_q(gl(m,n)) on the same space determine commuting actions of each other. Together with this result and Gyoja's q-analogue of the Young symmetrizer, we construct a highest weight vector of each irreducible summmand of the tensor product space.

We compute the structure of the Lie algebras associated to two examples of branch groups, and show that one has finite width while the other, the ``Gupta-Sidki group'', has unbounded width. This answers a question by Sidki. More precisely, the Lie algebra of the Gupta-Sidki group has Gelfand-Kirillov dimension $\log3/\log(1+\sqrt2)$. We then draw a general result relating the growth of a branch group, of its Lie algebra, of its graded group ring, and of a natural homogeneous space we call "parabolic space", namely the quotient of the group by the stabilizer of an infinite ray. The growth of the group is bounded from below by the growth of its graded group ring, which connects to the growth of the Lie algebra by a product-sum formula, and the growth of the parabolic space is bounded from below by the growth of the Lie algebra. Finally we use this information to explicitly describe the normal subgroups of the "Grigorchuk group". All normal subgroups are characteristic, and the number of normal subgroups of index $2^n$ is odd and is asymptotically $n^{\log_2(3)}$.
