The ability to rapidly evaluate materials properties through atomistic simulation approaches is the foundation of many new artificial intelligence-based approaches to materials identification and design. This depends on the availability of accurate descriptions of atomic bonding through various forms of interatomic potentials. We present an efficient, robust platform for calculating materials properties, i.e., APEX, the Alloy Property Explorer. APEX enables the rapid evolution of interatomic potential development and optimization, which is of particular importance in fine-tuning new classes of general AI-based foundation models to forms that are readily applicable to impacting materials development. APEX is an open-source, extendable, and cloud-native platform for material property calculations using a range of atomistic simulation methodologies that effectively manages diverse computational resources and is built upon user-friendly features including automatic results visualization, web-based platforms and NoSQL database client. It is designed for expert and non-specialist users, lowers the barrier to entry for interdisciplinary research within the "AI for Materials" framework. We describe the foundation and use of APEX, as well as provide an example of its application to properties of titanium for a wide-range of bonding descriptions.

Lattice formation of swirling textures is ubiquitous in solid-state materials, such as a magnetic skyrmion lattice in chiral magnets. In the magnetic skyrmion lattices, their moving states and dynamics under external perturbations are still unrevealed, although a detailed understanding of the dynamics is crucial to realizing spintronic applications, such as magnetic domain-wall racetrack memory. Here, we report in detail on the transient state of a moving magnetic skyrmion lattice in bulk single-crystalline MnSi under alternating current (AC) using small-angle neutron scattering. A rotation and concomitant broadening of the spot width in the azimuthal direction of the magnetic skyrmion reflections originating from the plastic deformation of the magnetic skyrmion lattice were found only at low AC frequencies, whereas above the threshold AC frequency (ft ~ 0.12 Hz) the rotation was not observed, and the spot width becomes sharper. The observed complex response of the magnetic skyrmion reflections can be explained by the change in dislocation density in the magnetic skyrmion lattice. At frequencies higher than ft, the magnetic skyrmions oscillate removing the dislocations, indicating that the dislocation density is controlled by the AC frequency., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

We present the development of a new algorithm which combines state-of-the-art energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy theory and a suitable machine learning formulation for the hyperspectral unmixing of scanning transmission electron microscope EDX spectrum images. The algorithm is based on non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) incorporating a physics-guided factorization model. It optimizes a Poisson likelihood, under additional simplex constraint together with user-chosen sparsity-inducing and smoothing regularizations, and is based on iterative multiplicative updates. The fluorescence of X-rays is fully modeled thanks to state-of-the-art theoretical work. It is shown that the output of the algorithm can be used for a direct chemical quantification. With this approach, it is straightforward to include a priori knowledge on the specimen such as the presence or absence of certain chemical elements in some of its phases. This work is implemented within two open-source Python packages, espm and emtables, which are used here for data simulation, data analysis and quantification. Using simulated data, we demonstrate that incorporating physical modeling in the decomposition helps retrieve meaningful components from spatially and spectrally mixed phases, even when the data are very noisy. For synthetic data with a higher signal, the regularizations yield a tenfold increase in the quality of the reconstructed abundance maps compared to standard NMF. Our approach is further validated on experimental data with a known ground truth, where state-of-the art results are achieved by using prior knowledge about the sample. Compared to the widely investigated crystalline polymorphs of gallium oxide (Ga2O3), knowledge about its amorphous state is still limited. With the help of a machine-learning interatomic potential, we conducted large-scale atomistic simulations to investigate the glass transition and mechanical behavior of amorphous Ga2O3 (a-Ga2O3). During the quenching simulations, amorphization of gallium oxide melt is observed at ultrahigh cooling rates, including a distinct glass transition. The final densities at room temperature have up to 4% variance compared to experiments. The glass transition temperature is evaluated to range from 1234 K to 1348 K at different cooling rates. Structural analysis of the amorphous structure shows evident similarities in structural properties between a-Ga2O3 and amorphous alumina (a-Al2O3), such as radial distribution function, coordination distribution, and bond angle distribution. An amorphous gallium oxide structure that contains approximately one million atoms is prepared for the tension simulation. A highly plastic behavior is observed at room temperature in the tension simulations, comparable to amorphous alumina. With quantitative characterization methods, we show that a-Ga2O3 can possibly has a higher nucleation rate of localized plastic strain events compared to a-Al2O3, which can increase the material's resistance to shear banding formation during deformation., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, under review

Transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) show unique physical, optical, and electronic properties. The known phases of TMDs are 2H and 3R in bulk form, 1T and associated reconstructions, and 1H in monolayer form. This paper reports a hypothetical phase, 9R, that may exist in TMDs (Mo, W)(S, Se, Te)$_2$, meeting both dynamical stability and elastic stability criteria. 9R phase has the same space group as 3R, $i.e.$ rhombohedral $R3m$ without inversion symmetry, and has 9 layers in a conventional unit cell. We find that 9R has an energy within 1 meV per formula unit of 3R and can be energetically favored by a particular strain condition. We further calculate the electronic, elastic, piezoelectric, Raman, and second-harmonic generation signatures of 9R TMDs and compare them with the corresponding 2H and 3R phases. 9R has similar properties to 3R but shows distinctive Raman peaks in the low-frequency regime, improved piezoelectric properties, and unique band splitting arising from layer coupling at the conduction band minimum. Identification of crystal structures is a crucial stage in the exploration of novel functional materials. This procedure is usually time-consuming and can be false-positive or false-negative. This necessitates a significant level of expert proficiency in the field of crystallography and, especially, requires deep experience in perovskite - related structures of hybrid perovskites. Our work is devoted to the machine learning classification of structure types of hybrid lead halides based on available X-ray diffraction data. Here, we proposed a simple approach to quickly identify of dimensionality of inorganic substructures, types of lead halide polyhedra connectivity and structure types using common powder XRD data and ML - decision tree classification model. The average accuracy of our ML algorithm in predicting the dimensionality of inorganic substructure, type of connection of lead halide and inorganic substructure topology by theoretically calculated XRD pattern among 14 most common structure types reaches 0.86+-0.05, 0.827+-0.028 and 0.71+-0.05, respectively. The validation of our decision tree classification ML model on experimental XRD data shows the accuracies of 1.0 and 0.82 for the dimension and structure type prediction. Thus, our approach can significantly simplify and accelerate the interpretation of highly complicated XRD data for hybrid lead halides.

The control of electron spins in materials that are simultaneously ferromagnetic and insulating opens up a wealth of quantum phenomena in spin-based electronics. Thin films of europium oxide (EuO) are ideal for the generation and manipulation of spin-polarized states, but so far there are no experimental literature reports on the magnetic domain patterns for EuO. However, at these microscopic length scales, magnetic relaxation between the remanent and demagnetized states takes place in any spintronic device. This relaxation process involves displacements of magnetic domain walls and can therefore be strongly influenced by the film structure and thickness. Here we present an investigation of the temperature-dependent behavior of magnetic domains and hysteresis in bulk-like (25 nm) and ultrathin (3 nm) EuO films. Magneto-optical Kerr microscopy is used, a technique that is a valuable tool to explore microscopic features such as spin dynamics and magnetic domain walls. Significant Kerr rotation in EuO led to high-contrast magnetic domain images in thick films, facilitating observation of domain dynamics. The critical temperature (TC) and coercivity shows strong thickness-dependent variations. The analysis and comparison of hysteresis loops and domain imaging in EuO and EuO/Co reveal proximity effect-induced antiferromagnetic coupling of both layers. To elucidate the magnetization reversal dynamics in EuO, micromagnetic simulations using MuMax3 were performed below and above TC. This comprehensive approach aims to comprehend the impact of magnetism and magnetic proximity effect in EuO on the micromagnetic scale, potentially extending its magnetic ordering beyond TC.

The discovery of topological semimetals with multifold band crossings has opened up a new and exciting frontier in the field of topological physics. These materials exhibit large Chern numbers, leading to long double Fermi arcs on their surfaces, which are protected by either crystal symmetries or topological order. The impact of these multifold crossings extends beyond surface science, as they are not constrained by the Poincar\'e classification of quasiparticles and only need to respect the crystal symmetry of one of the 1651 magnetic space groups. Consequently, we observe the emergence of free fermionic excitations in solid-state systems that have no high-energy counterparts, protected by non-symmorphic symmetries. In this work, we review the recent theoretical and experimental progress made in the field of multifold topological semimetals. We begin with the theoretical prediction of the so-called multifold fermions and discuss the subsequent discoveries of chiral and magnetic topological semimetals. Several experiments that have realized chiral semimetals in spectroscopic measurements are described, and we discuss the future prospects of this field. These exciting developments have the potential to deepen our understanding of the fundamental properties of quantum matter and inspire new technological applications in the future., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

A recently discovered kagome antiferromagnet $\rm{Y}_3\rm{Cu}_9(\rm{OH})_{19}\rm{Cl}_8$ has attracted significant interest due to its unique kagome lattice structure and magnetic properties. Two separate studies have proposed distinct sets of exchange interaction parameters for this compound. In this study, we investigate the ground state of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg kagome model with three types of nearest-neighbor exchange interactions under a magnetic field by exact diagonalization using the Lanczos method. We reveal that clear magnetization plateaus at $M/M_{\rm sat}$=1/3, 5/9, and 7/9 are present under both parameter sets, which are identified as magnon crystal states based on their spin structures. Our findings suggest that these plateaus could potentially be experimentally confirmed with magnetization measurements on $\rm{Y}_3\rm{Cu}_9(\rm{OH})_{19}\rm{Cl}_8$ under a magnetic field of approximately 300 T. Due to the uncertainty in the exchange interactions of $\rm{Y}_3\rm{Cu}_9(\rm{OH})_{19}\rm{Cl}_8$, we perform additional calculations by varying these interactions. Consequently, we discover additional plateau phases at $M/M_{\rm sat}$=1/3, 5/9, and 7/9, each distinctly different from the magnon crystal states.

In recent years, a type of topological semimetals (TSMs) that can host new fermions with high-fold degeneracy has attracted considerable interest. Among them, ones with chiral structrue particularly catch our attention. Such chiral high-fold degenerate semimetals always have a larger topological charge and longer Fermi arcs which bringing about some special properties. In this work, we found 147 chiral materials with exotic fermions near Fermi level by high-throughput calculation and screening. We selected some typical examples to analyse its topological properties such as topological surface states (TSSs) and Berry curvature. Our results are helpful to provide a promising platform for exploring the physical properties of chiral fermions and application of chiral TSMs.

We introduce a universal methodology for generating and manipulating altermagnetism in two-dimensional (2D) magnetic van der Waals (MvdW) materials through twisting. We find that a key in-plane 2-fold rotational operation can be achieved in a twisted bilayer of any 2D MvdW material, which takes one of all five 2D Bravais lattices, thereby inducing altermagnetism. By choosing the constituent MvdW monolayer with specific symmetry, our approach can tailor altermagnetism of any type, such as $d$-wave, $g$-wave, and $i$-wave. Furthermore, the properties of our twisted altermagnetic materials can be easily engineered. Taking a transition-metal oxyhalide VOBr as an example, we find that by tuning the twist angle and Fermi level a giant spin Hall angle can be obtained, much larger than the experimentally reported. This approach establishes a general, robust, and adjustable platform to explore altermagnetism, and provides a new efficient way to generate and manipulate the spin current.

The Boson peak is a universal phenomenon in amorphous solids. It can be observed as an anomalous contribution to the low-temperature heat capacity over the Debye model. Amorphous phase-change materials (PCMs) such as Ge-Sb-Te are a family of poor glass formers with fast crystallization kinetics, being of interest for phase-change memory applications. So far, whether Boson peaks exist in PCMs is unknown and, if they do, their relevance to PCM properties is unclear. Here, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of the pseudo-binary compositions on the tie-line between Ge15Te85 and Ge15Sb85 from a few Kelvins to the liquidus temperatures. Our results demonstrate the evidence of the pronounced Boson peaks in heat capacity below 10 K in the amorphous phase of all compositions. By fitting the data using the Debye model combined with the Einstein model, we can extract the characteristic parameters of the Boson peaks and attribute their origin to the excess vibrational modes of dynamic defects in the amorphous solids. We find that these parameters correlate almost linearly with the Sb-content of the alloys, despite the nonmonotonic behaviors in glass forming abilities. A larger contribution of excess vibrational modes correlates with a larger width of enthalpy relaxation below the glass transition temperature Tg. In a broader context, we show that the correlations of the characteristic parameters of the Boson peaks with Tg and kinetic fragility, vary according to the type of bonding. Specifically, metallic glasses and conventional covalent glasses exhibit distinct patterns of dependence, whereas PCMs manifest characteristics that lie in between. A deeper understanding of the Boson peaks in PCMs holds the promise to enable predictions of material properties at higher temperatures based on features observed in low-temperature heat capacity.

Quantitative analysis of microstructural features on the nanoscale, including precipitates, local chemical orderings (LCOs) or structural defects (e.g. stacking faults) plays a pivotal role in understanding the mechanical and physical responses of engineering materials. Atom probe tomography (APT), known for its exceptional combination of chemical sensitivity and sub-nanometer resolution, primarily identifies microstructures through compositional segregations. However, this fails when there is no significant segregation, as can be the case for LCOs and stacking faults. Here, we introduce a 3D deep learning approach, AtomNet, designed to process APT point cloud data at the single-atom level for nanoscale microstructure extraction, simultaneously considering compositional and structural information. AtomNet is showcased in segmenting L12-type nanoprecipitates from the matrix in an AlLiMg alloy, irrespective of crystallographic orientations, which outperforms previous methods. AtomNet also allows for 3D imaging of L10-type LCOs in an AuCu alloy, a challenging task for conventional analysis due to their small size and subtle compositional differences. Finally, we demonstrate the use of AtomNet for revealing 2D stacking faults in a Co-based superalloy, without any defected training data, expanding the capabilities of APT for automated exploration of hidden microstructures. AtomNet pushes the boundaries of APT analysis, and holds promise in establishing precise quantitative microstructure-property relationships across a diverse range of metallic materials.

Recently, MnTe was established as an altermagnetic material that hosts spin-polarized electronic bands as well as anomalous transport effects like the anomalous Hall effect. In addition to these effects arising from altermagnetism, MnTe also hosts other magnetoresistance effects. Here, we study the manipulation of the magnetic order by an applied magnetic field and its impact on the electrical resistivity. In particular, we establish which components of anisotropic magnetoresistance are present when the magnetic order is rotated within the hexagonal basal plane. Our experimental results, which are in agreement with our symmetry analysis of the magnetotransport components, showcase the existence of an anisotropic magnetoresistance linked to both the relative orientation of current and magnetic order, as well as crystal and magnetic order.

Nosocomial infections (NIs) are prevalent in intensive care units due to antibiotic overuse. Metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs), like ZnO, offer potential solutions, yet understanding how NPs size impacts their antibacterial efficacy are lacking. This study focuses on the effect of nanoparticle size on kinetics of bacterial strains growth. NPs were synthesized using a sol-gel process with monoethanolamine (MEA) and water, characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy, confirming crystallization and size variations. ZnO NPs with mean size of 22, 35 and 66 nm were used against the most common nosocomial bacteria strains Escherichia coli (Gram-negative), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Gram-negative), and Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive). The evaluation of NPs minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and bactericidal concentration (MBC) revealed superior antibacterial activity in smaller NPs. The bacterial population was monitored via optical absorbance, showing reduced specific growth rate, prolonged latency period, and increased inhibition percentage with smaller NPs, indicating a substantial deceleration in the growth of microorganisms. Pseudomonas aeruginosa exhibited the smallest sensitivity to ZnO NPs, attributed to its environmental stress resistance. Furthermore, the antibacterial efficacy of paint containing 1 wt% of 22 nm ZnO NPs was assessed and displayed activity against E. coli and S. aureus.

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures have attracted intense interest worldwide that offers several routes to design materials with novel features which can be served various applications. Unfortunately, at present, this method is restricted to a small number of stackable layers. In this work, we report a bulk vdW material consisting of alternative TiS2 and TiSe2 layers vertically arranged as a potential candidate for anode applications. Moreover, with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, we explored the effect of high entropy on electrochemical performance of the bulk heterostructure (TSS-HS) by substituting Mo6+ and Al3+ at transition metal site (Ti4+). Solvation shell formation at the electrode-electrolyte interface (EEI) was also studied using AIMD to determine the Li-coordination. Our DFT and AIMD analysis showed considerable improvement in the performance of high entropy TSS-HS (TSS-HE) as compared to TSS-HS. Factors responsible for enhanced performance of TSS-HE were 1) Less structural deformation, 2) Strong bonding (Metal-Chalcogen), 3) Better ionic mobility, 4) Higher theoretical specific capacity, 5) Wider operational voltage window, and 6) Faster Li-ion diffusion. Our observations suggests that 'high entropy' can be an effective strategy to design new anode materials for improving electrochemical performance of Li-ion batteries.

Hydrogen energy is a high-efficiency and clean energy. Large-surface-area, two-dimensional (2D) layered materials are expected to have an advantage in hydrogen storage applications. Among a large number of 2D materials, monolayer dichacogenides have emerged as promising candidate for hydrogen clean energy. In the present work, first-principles calculations and molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to investigate the adsorption behaviors of hydrogen molecules on transition metal dichalcogenides and disulphides. Furthermore we propose novel structures which may suitable for hydrogen storage. As the concentration increaes, 2D shows thermodynamic stability even at room temperature, suggesting a possible aplicability for hydrogen storage.

Bottom-up assembly of nanocrystals (NCs) into ordered arrays, or superlattices (SLs), is a promising route to design materials with new functionalities, but the degree of control over assembly into functional structures remains challenging. Using electrostatics, rather than density, to tune the interactions between semiconductor NCs, we watch self-assembly proceeding through a metastable liquid phase. We systematically investigate the phase behavior as a function of quench conditions in situ and in real time using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Through quantitative fitting to colloid, liquid, and SL models, we extract the time evolution of each phase and the system phase diagram, which we find to be consistent with short-range attractive interactions. Using the phase diagram's predictive power, we establish control of the self-assembly rate over three orders of magnitude, and identify one- and two-step self-assembly regimes, with only the latter implicating the metastable liquid as an intermediate. Importantly, the presence of the metastable liquid increases SL formation rates relative to the equivalent one-step pathway, and SL order counterintuitively increases with the rate, revealing a highly desirable and generalizable kinetic strategy to promote and enhance ordered assembly., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

It is now established that glasses feature low-frequency, nonphononic excitations, in addition to phonons that follow Debye's vibrational density of state (VDoS). Extensive computer studies demonstrated that these nonphononic, glassy excitations follow a universal non-Debye VDoS ${\cal D}_{\rm G}(\omega)\!\sim\!\omega^4$, at low frequencies $\omega$. Yet, due to intrinsic difficulties in disentangling ${\cal D}_{\rm G}(\omega)$ from the total VDoS ${\cal D}(\omega)$, which is experimentally accessible through various scattering techniques, the $\omega^4$ tail of ${\cal D}_{\rm G}(\omega)$ lacked direct experimental support. We develop a procedure to extract ${\cal D}_{\rm G}(\omega)$ from the measured ${\cal D}(\omega)$, based on recent advances in understanding low-frequency excitations in glasses, and apply it to available datasets for diverse glasses. The resulting analysis shows that the $\omega^4$ tail of the nonphononic vibrational spectra of glasses is nontrivially consistent with a broad range of experimental observations. One-dimensional (1D) interacting electrons are often described as a Luttinger liquid1-4 having properties that are intrinsically different from Fermi liquids in higher dimensions5,6. 1D electrons in materials systems exhibit exotic quantum phenomena that can be tuned by both intra- and inter-1D-chain electronic interactions, but their experimental characterization can be challenging. Here we demonstrate that layer-stacking domain walls (DWs) in van der Waals heterostructures form a broadly tunable Luttinger liquid system including both isolated and coupled arrays. We have imaged the evolution of DW Luttinger liquids under different interaction regimes tuned by electron density using a novel scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) technique. Single DWs at low carrier density are highly susceptible to Wigner crystallization consistent with a spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid, while at intermediate densities dimerized Wigner crystals form due to an enhanced magneto-elastic coupling. Periodic arrays of DWs exhibit an interplay between intra- and inter-chain interactions that gives rise to new quantum phases. At low electron densities inter-chain interactions are dominant and induce a 2D electron crystal composed of phased-locked 1D Wigner crystal in a staggered configuration. Increased electron density causes intra-chain fluctuation potentials to dominate, leading to an electronic smectic liquid crystal phase where electrons are ordered with algebraical correlation decay along the chain direction but disordered between chains. Our work shows that layer-stacking DWs in 2D heterostructures offers new opportunities to explore Luttinger liquid physics.

Liquid metal catalysts (LMCats), primarily molten copper, have demonstrated their efficiency in the chemical vapour deposition (CVD) approach for synthesising high-quality, large-area graphene. However, their high melting temperatures limit broader applications. Reducing the temperature of graphene production on LMCats would lead to a more efficient and cost-effective process. Here, we investigated the effects of alloying copper with a low-melting temperature metal on graphene growth in real-time. We examined a set of liquid copper-gallium alloy systems using two complementary in situ techniques: radiation-mode optical microscopy and synchrotron X-ray reflectivity (XRR). Microscopy observations revealed reduced catalytic activity and graphene quality degradation in compositions with gallium domination. The XRR confirmed the formation of single-layer graphene on alloys with up to 60 wt% of gallium. Additionally, we detected a systematic increase in adsorption height on the alloys' surface, suggesting a weaker graphene adhesion on gallium. These findings propose a trade-off between layer quality and production cost reduction is feasible. Our results offer insights into the CVD synthesis of graphene on bimetallic liquid surfaces and underscore the potential of gallium-copper alloys for enabling the direct transfer of graphene from a liquid substrate, thereby addressing the limitations imposed by high melting temperatures of conventional LMCats.

Collective plasmon excitations in solids that result from the process of photoemission are an important area of fundamental research. In this study, we identify a significant number ($n$) of multiple bulk plasmons ($n\omega_p$) in the hard x-ray photoelectron spectra of the core levels and valence bands (VBs) of two well-known, nearly free electron metals, aluminum (Al) and magnesium (Mg). On the basis of earlier theoretical works, we estimate the contributions of extrinsic, intrinsic, and interference processes to the intensities of 1$s$ to 2$s$ core level plasmons. The intrinsic contribution diminishes from 22% for 1$\omega_p$, to 4.4% for 2$\omega_p$, and becomes negligible thereafter (0.5% for 3$\omega_p$). The extrinsic and intrinsic plasmon contributions do not vary significantly across a broad range of photoelectron kinetic energies, and also between the two metals (Al and Mg). The interference contribution varies from negative to zero as $n$ increases. An asymmetric line shape is observed for the bulk plasmons, which is most pronounced for 1$\omega_p$. Signature of the surface plasmon is detected in normal emission, and it exhibits a significantly increased intensity in the grazing emission. The VB spectra of Al and Mg, which are dominated by $s$-like states, exhibit excellent agreement with the calculated VB based on density functional theory. The VB exhibits four multiple bulk plasmon peaks in the loss region, which are influenced by an intrinsic process in addition to the extrinsic process. On a completely oxidized aluminum surface, the relative intensity of the Al metal bulk plasmon remains nearly unaltered, while the surface plasmon is completely attenuated., Comment: Phys. Rev. Ion adsorption and dynamics in porous carbons is crucial for many technologies such as energy storage and desalination. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a key method to investigate such systems thanks to the possibility to distinguish adsorbed (in-pore) and bulk (ex-pore) species in the spectra. However, the large variety of magnetic environments experienced by the ions adsorbed in the particles and the existence of dynamic exchange between the inside of the particles and the bulk renders the intepretation of the NMR experiments very complex. In this work, we optimise and apply a mesoscopic model to simulate NMR spectra of ions in systems where carbon particles of different sizes can be considered. We demonstrate that even for monodisperse systems, complex NMR spectra, with broad and narrow peaks, can be observed. We then show that the inclusion of polydispersity is essential to recover some experimentally observed features, such as the co-existence of peaks assigned to in-pore, exchange and bulk. Indeed, the variety of exchange rates between in-pore and ex-pore environments, present in experiments but not taken into account in analytical models, is necessary to reproduce the complexity of experimental NMR spectra.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) based electron channeling contrast imaging (ECCI) is used to observe and quantify misfit dislocation (MD) networks formed at the heteroepitaxial interface between ZnS and GaP grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Below a critical thickness of 15-20 nm, no MDs are observed. However, crystallographic features with strong dipole contrast, consistent with unexpanded dislocation half-loops, are observed prior to the formation of visible interfacial MD segments and any notable strain relaxation. At higher film thicknesses (20 to 50 nm), interfacial MD lengths increase anisotropically in the two orthogonal in-plane <110> line directions, threading dislocation (TD) density increases, and a roughening transition is observed from atomically smooth two-dimensional (2D) to a multi-stepped three-dimensional (3D) morphology, providing evidence for step edge pinning via surface terminating dislocations. The ZnS strain relaxation, calculated from the total MD content observed via ECCI, matches the average strain relaxation measured by high-resolution x-ray diffraction (HRXRD). The MD lengths are found to follow a log-normal distribution, indicating that the combined MD nucleation and TD glide processes must have a normal distribution of activation energies. The estimated TD glide velocity ($v_{g}$) along [$\bar{1}$10] is almost twice that along [110], but in both directions shows a maximum as a function of film thickness, indicating an initial burst of plasticity followed by dislocation pinning., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

It is long believed that the response theory can give quantum correction (or interband coherent effects) to the semiclassical theory, while both formulations essentially are perturbatively solving the time-dependent Sch\"odinger equation in a periodic potential probed by the electric field within the independent-particle approximation. In this work, by extending the semiclassical theory under a uniform electric field to the nonlinear AC regime, we show explicitly that up to the second order of the electric field, the AC semiclassical theory gives exactly the same results as the response theory in the absence of relaxation. Remarkably, this equivalence can be expected even in DC limit when the zero-frequency divergence is regulated on the same footing. Particularly, at the linear order of the electric field, we show that both formulations deliver the same Drude current, intrinsic anomalous Hall current, and the displacement current, where the last one arising from the time variation of the first-order \textit{positional shift} can only appear in AC transport and is usually overlooked. Furthermore, at the second order of the electric field, we show that all the well-known transport effects, including the nonlinear Drude and Hall effects (that can be driven by the Berry curvature dipole or/and quantum metric dipole) can be derived by both formulations. Additionally, we show that the nonlinear displacement current due to the time variation of the second-order \textit{positional shift} and the nonlinear intrinsic Ohmic current due to the second-order energy correction (which is determined by the first-order \textit{positional shift}) in AC semiclassical theory can also be obtained by response theory.

Here we report on an elastic and inelastic neutron scattering study addressing the effect of electric fields on quantum paraelectric SrTiO3. Our elastic scattering results find small changes as a function of field in a superlattice reflection that sample the octahedral rotations, which is indicative of only weak coupling of octahedral rotation and electric polarization. By collecting not only the change in gap, but also of the dispersion, we can better quantify the changes in the lattice dynamics. The findings are put in context to recent field DFT calculations predicting the E-field effect on the atomic motions of the lowest lying transverse optical (soft) mode. We find hints of non-linear coupling to the acoustic mode and to the phonon with polarization perpendicular to the E-field, which shows the non-linearity in the chemical potential that is also relevant when strongly driving SrTiO3 with E-field (THz) pulses.

Two-dimensional materials are a highly tunable platform for studying the momentum space topology of the electronic wavefunctions and real space topology in terms of skyrmions, merons, and vortices of an order parameter. Such textures for electronic polarization can exist in moir\'e heterostructures. A quantum-mechanical definition of local polarization textures in insulating supercells was recently proposed. Here, we propose a definition for local polarization that is also valid for systems with topologically non-trivial bands. We introduce semilocal hybrid polarizations, which are valid even when the Wannier functions in a system cannot be made exponentially localized in all dimensions. We use this definition to explicitly show that nontrivial real-space polarization textures can exist in topologically non-trivial systems with non-zero Chern number under (1) an external superlattice potential, and (2) under a stacking-induced moir\'e potential. In the latter, we find that while the magnitude of the local polarization decreases discontinuously across a topological phase transition from trivial to topologically nontrivial, the polarization does not completely vanish. Trapped materials at the interfaces of two-dimensional heterostructures (HS) lead to reduced coupling between the layers, resulting in degraded optoelectronic performance and device variability. Further, nanobubbles can form at the interface during transfer or after annealing. The question of what is inside a nanobubble, i.e. the trapped material, remains unanswered, limiting the studies and applications of these nanobubble systems. In this work, we report two key advances. Firstly, we quantify the interface quality using RAW-format optical imaging, and distinguish between ideal and non-ideal interfaces. The HS-substrate ratio value is calculated using a transfer matrix model, and is able to detect the presence of trapped layers. The second key advance is identification of water as the trapped material inside a nanobubble. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to show that optical imaging alone can quantify interface quality, and find the type of trapped material inside spontaneously formed nanobubbles. We also define a quality index parameter to quantify the interface quality of HS. Quantitative measurement of the interface will help answer the question whether annealing is necessary during HS preparation, and will enable creation of complex HS with small twist angles. Identification of the trapped materials will pave the way towards using nanobubbles for novel optical and engineering applications.

Spin-to-photon interfaces from defects in silicon hold great promise towards realizing quantum repeaters with the combination of advanced semiconductor and photonics technologies. Recently, controlled creation and erasure of simple carbon interstitial defects have been successfully realised in silicon. This defect has a stable structure near room temperature and emits in the wave-length where the signal loss is minimal in optical fibres used in communication technologies. Our in-depth theoretical characterization confirms the assignment of the observed emission to the neutral charge state of this defect. We find that the emission is due to the recombination of a bound exciton. We also discovered a metastable triplet state that could be applied as a quantum memory. Based on the analysis of the electronic structure of the defect and its similarities to a known optically detected magnetic resonance centre in silicon, we propose that a carbon interstitial can act as a quantum bit and may realize a spin-to-photon interface in CMOS-compatible platforms., Comment: 2 figures and 2 tables

The versatility and wide-ranging applicability of the Ising model, originally introduced to study phase transitions in magnetic materials, have made it a cornerstone in statistical physics and a valuable tool for evaluating the performance of emerging computer hardware. Here, we present a novel implementation of the two-dimensional Ising model on a Cerebras Wafer-Scale Engine (WSE), a revolutionary processor that is opening new frontiers in computing. In our deployment of the checkerboard algorithm, we optimized the Ising model to take advantage of the unique WSE architecture. Specifically, we employed a compressed bit representation storing 16 spins on each int16 word, and efficiently distributed the spins over the processing units enabling seamless weak scaling and limiting communications to only immediate neighboring units. Our implementation can handle up to 754 simulations in parallel, achieving an aggregate of over 61.8 trillion flip attempts per second for Ising models with up to 200 million spins. This represents a gain of up to 148 times over previously reported single-device with a highly optimized implementation on NVIDIA V100 and up to 88 times in productivity compared to NVIDIA H100. Spintronic terahertz emitters (STEs) are powerful sources of ultra-broadband single-cycle terahertz (THz) field transients. They work with any pump wavelength, and their polarity and polarization direction are easily adjustable. However, at high pump powers and high repetition rates, STE operation is hampered by a significant increase in the local temperature. Here, we resolve this issue by rotating the STE at a few 100 Hz, thereby distributing the absorbed pump power over a larger area. Our approach permits stable STE operation at a fluence of ~1 mJ/cm$^2$ with up to 18 W pump power at megahertz repetition rates, corresponding to pump-pulse energies of a few 10 $\mu$J and a power density far above the melting threshold of metallic films. The rotating STE is of interest for all ultra-broadband high-power THz applications requiring high repetition rates. As an example, we show that THz pulses with peak fields of 10 kV/cm can be coupled to a THz-lightwave-driven scanning tunneling microscope at 1 MHz repetition rate, demonstrating that the rotating STE can compete with standard THz sources such as LiNbO$_3$., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, supplementary material included

In this letter, we use knowledge gained from our recent study to present a technique for separation of nanoparticles such as exosomes, anticancer drugs, and vaccines. The technique involves adding non-adsorptive polymers to a system in which two types of nanoparticles with the same size and zeta potential are dispersed. The different types of nanoparticles can be separated based on differences in their hydrophobicities and softness of the polymer. Using the non-additive Asakura-Oosawa theory and assuming a realistic model system, we were able to separate the two types of the particles with the same size and zeta potential in the model system.

Antiperovskite nitrides are potential candidates for applications harvesting solar light. With a comprehensive state-of-the-art approach combining hybrid density-functional theory, many-body perturbation theory, the Wannier-Mott model, density-functional perturbation theory, and the Feynman polaron model, we explore excitonic and polaronic effects in X$_3$NA (X: Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, A = Sb, As). For all of them, we uncover a significant influence of the ionic dielectric screening on the static dielectric constant. Small exciton binding energies, weak electron-phonon coupling, and high charge-carrier mobilities facilitate enhanced charge transport in Mg$_3$NSb, Sr$_3$NSb, and Ba$_3$NSb. Our results highlight the potential of these nitrides as optimal candidates for efficient photovoltaic absorbers.

The manipulation of edge configurations and structures in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) for versatile functionalization has attracted intensive interest in recent years. The chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach has shown promise for TMD edge engineering of atomic edge configurations (1H, 1T or 1T'-zigzag or armchair edges), as well as diverse edge morphologies (1D nanoribbons, 2D dendrites, 3D spirals, etc). These rich-edge TMD layers offer versatile candidates for probing the physical and chemical properties, and exploring new applications in electronics, optoelectronics, catalysis, sensing and quantum field. In this review, we present an overview of the current state-of-the-art in the manipulation of TMD atomic edges and edge-rich structures using CVD. We highlight the vast range of unique properties associated with these edge configurations and structures and provide insights into the opportunities afforded by such edge-functionalized crystals. The objective of this review is to motivate further research and development efforts in using CVD as a scalable approach to harness the benefits of such crystal-edge engineering.

Induced by an ultra-short laser pulse, the electronic structure of a material undergoes strong modifications leading to a fast demagnetization in magnetic materials. Induced spin-flip transitions are one of the reasons for demagnetization, that is discussed in the literature as a Stoner-like mechanism. On the other hand, demagnetization due to transverse spin fluctuations is usually discussed on the basis of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian and hardly accounts for the modification of the electronic structure. In this work we demonstrate a strong impact of the laser-induced electron transitions, both spin-flip and spin-conserving, on the exchange coupling parameters. For this, a simple two-step scheme is suggested. As a first step, the electronic structure time evolution during the ultra-short laser pulse is described accurately within time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. As a next step, the information on the time-dependent electronic structure is used for calculations of the parameters of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian. A strong modification of the exchange coupling parameters is found in response to the applied ultra-short laser pulse. The most important reason for this modification is played by the laser induced repopulation of the electronic states. Although the changes of the exchange parameters are most prominent during the laser pulse, they may be important also for the magnetic relaxation. The same concerns the spin-lattice interactions playing a central role for the relaxation process. A strong impact of the laser-induced modification of the electronic structure on the spin-lattice coupling parameters is also shown in this work.

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is an important commercial polymer, bearing atactic stereochemistry resulting from nonselective radical polymerization. As such, an accurate, fundamental understanding of governing interactions among PAN molecular units are indispensable to advance the design principles of final products at reduced processability costs. While ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations can provide the necessary accuracy for treating key interactions in polar polymers such as dipole-dipole interactions and hydrogen bonding, and analyzing their influence on molecular orientation, their implementation is limited to small molecules only. Herein, we show that the neural network interatomic potentials (NNIP) that are trained on the small-scale AIMD data (acquired for oligomers) can be efficiently employed to examine the structures/properties at large scales (polymers). NNIP provides critical insight into intra- and interchain hydrogen bonding and dipolar correlations, and accurately predicts the amorphous bulk PAN structure validated by modeling the experimental X-ray structure factor. Furthermore, the NNIP-predicted PAN properties such as density and elastic modulus are in good agreement with their experimental values. Overall, the trend in the elastic modulus is found to correlate strongly with the PAN structural orientations encoded in Hermans orientation factor. This study enables the ability to predict the structure-property relations for PAN and analogs with sustainable ab initio accuracy across scales.

This paper presents the phase stability, opto-electronic and thermo-electric behavior of X2AuYZ6 (X = Cs, Rb; Z = Cl/Br/I) double perovskite halides by using the DFT method. The compounds belong to the cubic arrangement and are verified by the tolerance and octahedral factor. Formation enthalpy and binding energy meet the requirements of structural stability. The ductility behavior was also confirmed by the Cauchy pressure, Pugh's ratio, and Poisson's ratio. The positive frequency of phonon dispersion except Rb2AuYI6 compound shows the dynamical stability and the negative formation energy of each identified competing phase confirms the thermo-dynamic equilibrium of all compounds. The band gap values of 2.85(2.91), 2.35(2.40), and 1.74(1.78) eV of Cs2AuYZ6 (Rb2AuYZ6) [Z = Cl, Br, I) double perovskites has been explored in the context of optoelectronic properties, and the results show that these materials might be useful in such devices. The spectral optical response covers the visible-to-UV area, which governs the solar cell and thermo-electric device applications. A comprehensive study of thermo-electric properties such as the thermal conductivity (electrical and electronic part), carrier concentration, thermo-power, and figure of merit was also observed. The investigated compounds [Cs (Rb)-based] exhibit ZT values of 0.51(0.55), 0.53(0.62), and 0.58(0.75) at room temperature with Cl, Br, and I respectively. Additional routine work was also done on the thermo-mechanical characteristics. These studies provide in-depth knowledge of these materials in preparation for their future use.

We describe a mechanism by which both ferroelectric polarization and magnetization can be created in nonpolar, nonmagnetic materials. Using a combination of phenomenological modeling and first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that ferroelectric polarization, magnetization, or both simultaneously can be transiently induced by an ultrashort laser pulse upon linearly, circularly, or elliptically polarized excitation of phonon modes in $\gamma$-LiBO$_2$. The direction and magnitude of the multiferroic polarization can be controlled by the chirality of the laser pulse and the phonon modes, offering a pathway for controlling multiferroicity and magnetoelectricity on ultrafast timescales.

Bioresorbable Mg-based alloys with low density, low elastic modulus, and excellent biocompatibility are outstanding candidates for temporary orthopedic implants. Coincidentally, metal additive manufacturing (AM) is disrupting the biomedical sector by providing fast access to patient-customized implants. Due to the high cooling rates associated with fusion-based AM techniques, they are often described as rapid solidification processes. However, conclusive observations or rapid solidification in metal AM -- attested by drastic microstructural changes induced by solute trapping, kinetic undercooling, or morphological transitions of the solid-liquid interface -- are scarce. Here we study the formation of banded microstructures during laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF) of a biomedical-grade Magnesium-rare earth alloy, combining advanced characterization and state-of-the-art thermal and phase-field modeling. Our experiments unambiguously identify microstructures as the result of an oscillatory banding instability known from other rapid solidification processes. Our simulations confirm that LPBF-relevant solidification conditions strongly promote the development of banded microstructures in a Mg-Nd alloy. Simulations also allow us to peer into the sub-micrometer nanosecond-scale details of the solid-liquid interface evolution giving rise to the distinctive banded patterns. Since rapidly solidified Mg alloys may exhibit significantly different mechanical and corrosion response compared to their cast counterparts, the ability to predict the emergence of rapid solidification microstructures (and to correlate them with local solidification conditions) may open new pathways for the design of bioresorbable orthopedic implants, not only fitted geometrically to each patient, but also optimized with locally-tuned mechanical and corrosion properties.

Within the framework of the recently introduced multi-nanoparticle power-series expansion method for the polarized small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) cross section, we present analytical expressions for the polarized SANS observables arising from dilute nanoparticle assemblies with antisymmetric vortex-type spin structures. We establish connections between the magnetic correlation coefficients and the magnetic field-dependent vortex-axes distribution function, which is related to the random orientations of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy axes of the nanoparticles. Our analytical results are validated through a comparative analysis with micromagnetic simulations. This framework contributes to a comprehensive understanding of polarized magnetic neutron scattering from spherical nanoparticle systems exhibiting vortex-type spin structures.

Optical Bound States in the Continuum are peculiar localized states within the continuous spectrum that are unaffected by any far-field radiation and intrinsic absorption, therefore possessing infinite mode lifetime and Q-factor. To date they have been widely studied in dielectric structures whereas their exploitation in lossy media, i.e. plasmonic nanostructures, still remains a challenge. Here, we show the emergence of a hybrid BIC state in a 2D system of silver-filled dimers, quasi-embedded in a high-index dielectric waveguide. The hybrid BIC onset is found to be highly dependent on the bare modes' spectral and spatial overlap, but particularly on the plasmonic field's intensity. By tailoring the hybridizing plasmonic/photonic fractions we select an ideal coupling regime for which the mode exhibits both, high Q-factor values and strong near-field enhancement tightly confined in the nanogap and a consequently extremely small modal volume. We demonstrate that this optical layout can be exploited in a proof-of-concept experiment for the detection of TAR DNA-binding protein 43, which outperforms the sensitivity of current label-free biosensing platforms, reaching the zeptomolar range of concentration.

Thermal boundary resistance (TBR) in semiconductor-on-diamond structure bottlenecks efficient heat dissipation in electronic devices. In this study, to reduce the TBR between GaN and diamond, surface-activated bonding with a hybrid SiOx-Ar ion source was applied to achieve an ultrathin interfacial layer. The simultaneous surface activation and slow deposition of the SiOx binder layer enabled precise control over layer thickness (2.5-5.3 nm) and formation of an amorphous heterogeneous nanostructure comprising a SiOx region between two inter-diffusion regions. Crucially, the 2.5-nm-thick interfacial layer achieved a TBR of 8.3 m2-W/GW, a record low for direct-bonded GaN/diamond interface. A remarkable feature is that the TBR is extremely sensitive to the interfacial thickness; rapidly increasing to 34 m2-K/GW on doubling the thickness to 5.3 nm. Theoretical analysis revealed the origin of this increase: a diamond/SiOx interdiffusion layer extend the vibrational frequency, far-exceeding that of crystalline diamond, which increases the lattice vibrational mismatch and suppresses phonon transmission.

Interferometers are some of the most important optical devices, yet their spin wave based analogues so far received limited attention. In this work we demonstrate how one can design Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) operating on spin waves, and use to construct a spin wave version of a well known1 MZI based AI computing device. Modeling, performed both micromagnetically and by using a novel, finite difference based method, shows that some of the achievable operational parameters are orders of magnitude superior to both optical and CMOS based implementations., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Fluoridoargentates(II) represent a fascinating class of silver(II) compounds that exhibit structural and magnetic similarities to cuprate superconductors. However, their synthesis is challenging, leaving their properties largely unexplored. In this study, mechanochemistry is introduced as a new technique for the synthesis of fluoridoargentates(II), which avoids the use of anhydrous HF or heating, and employs simple equipment. Furthermore, by ball milling of commercially available precursors, AgF and AgF2, we obtained the first two examples of binary mixed-valent silver(I,II) phases, AgI2AgIIF4 and AgIAgIIF3. While the AgI2AgIIF4 phase was obtained at room temperature, the AgIAgIIF3 phase is metastable and required milling under cryogenic conditions. Using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, it was found that AgI2AgIIF4 crystallizes in the P21/c space group and is isostructural to beta-K2AgF4. Here, double-bridged [AgF6]4- octahedra form chains that propagate along the a-crystallographic direction, giving a quasi-1D canted antiferromagnetic character, as shown by magnetic susceptibility. The AgIAgIIF phase adopts the P-1 space group, is isostructural to AgCuF3 and shows features of a one-dimensional antiferromagnet. It is expected that this facile synthetic approach will enable the expansion of silver(II) chemistry and accelerate the search for a silver analogue to cuprate superconductors., Comment: 28 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables

Weyl semimetals with magnetic ordering provide a promising platform for the investigation of rare topological effects such as the anomalous Hall effect, resulting from the interplay of nontrivial bands with various spin configurations. The materials $R$AlSi, where $R$ represents a rare-earth element, are prominent representatives of Weyl semimetals, where the Weyl states are induced by space inversion symmetry breaking and in addition, for several rare-earth elements $R$, enhanced by time-reversal symmetry breaking through the formation of a magnetic order at low temperature. We report optical signatures of Weyl fermions in the magnetic compounds CeAlSi, PrAlSi, NdAlSi, and SmAlSi as well as the non-magnetic family member LaAlSi by broad-frequency infrared spectroscopy at room temperature, i.e., in the paramagnetic phase. A similar profile of the optical conductivity spectrum and a metallic character are observed for all compounds, with LaAlSi showing the strongest free charge carrier contribution. Furthermore, the linear-in-frequency behavior of the optical conductivity of all investigated compounds indicates the presence of Weyl nodes in close vicinity of the Fermi energy, resulting from inversion symmetry breaking in noncentrosymmetric structures. According to the characteristics of these linear slopes, the $R$AlSi compounds are expected to host mainly type-II Weyl states with overtilted Weyl cones. The results are compared to the optical response of the closely related $R$AlGe materials, which are considered as potential hybridization-driven Weyl-Kondo systems., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. Interest in high-entropy inorganic compounds originates from their ability to stabilize cations and anions in local environments that rarely occur at standard temperature and pressure. This leads to new crystalline phases in many-cation formulations with structures and properties that depart from conventional trends. The highest-entropy homogeneous and random solid-solution is a parent structure from which a continuum of lower-entropy offspring can originate by adopting chemical and/or structural order. This report demonstrates how synthesis conditions, thermal history, and elastic and chemical boundary conditions conspire to regulate this process in Mg0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Cu0.2Zn0.2O, during which coherent CuO nano-tweeds and spinel nano-cuboids evolve. We do so by combining structured synthesis routes, atomic-resolution microscopy and spectroscopy, density functional theory, and a phase field modeling framework that accurately predicts the emergent structure and local chemistry. This establishes a framework to appreciate, understand, and predict the macrostate spectrum available to a high-entropy system that is critical to rationalize property engineering opportunities.

In lead halide perovskites (APbX3), the effect of the A-site cation on optical and electronic properties has initially been thought to be marginal. Yet, evidence of beneficial effects on solar cell performance and light emission is accumulating. Here, we report that the A-cation in soft APbBr3 colloidal quantum dots (QDs) controls the phonon-induced localization of the exciton wavefunction. Insights from ab initio molecular dynamics and single-particle fluorescence spectroscopy demonstrate that anharmonic lattice vibrations and the resulting polymorphism act as an additional confinement potential. Avoiding the trade-off between single-photon purity and optical stability faced by downsizing conventional QDs into the strong confinement regime, dynamical phonon-induced confinement in large organic-inorganic perovskite QDs enables bright (10^6 photons/s), stable (> 1h), and pure (> 95%) single-photon emission in a widely tuneable spectral range (495-745 nm). Strong electron-phonon interaction in soft perovskite QDs provides an unconventional route toward the development of scalable room-temperature quantum light sources.

In 1966, Pierre-Gilles de Gennes proposed a non-volatile mechanism for switching superconductivity on and off in a magnetic device. This involved a superconductor (S) sandwiched between ferromagnetic (F) insulators in which the net magnetic exchange field could be controlled through the magnetisation-orientation of the F layers. Because superconducting switches are attractive for a range of applications, extensive studies have been carried out on $F/S/F$ structures. Although these have demonstrated a sensitivity of the superconducting critical temperature ($T_{c}$) to parallel (P) and antiparallel (AP) magnetisation-orientations of the F layers, corresponding shifts in $T_c$ (i.e., ${\Delta}T_c = T_{c,AP} - T_{c,P}$) are lower than predicted with ${\Delta}T_c$ only a small fraction of $T_{c,AP}$, precluding the development of applications. Here, we report $EuS/Au/Nb/EuS$ structures where EuS is an insulating ferromagnet, Nb is a superconductor and Au is a heavy metal. For P magnetisations, the superconducting state in this structure is quenched down to the lowest measured temperature of 20 mK meaning that ${\Delta}T_c/T_{c,AP}$ is practically 1. The key to this so-called absolute switching effect is a sizable spin-mixing conductance at the $EuS/Au$ interface which ensures a robust magnetic proximity effect, unlocking the potential of $F/S/F$ switches for low power electronics.

Previous studies on natural samples of pampaloite (AuSbTe) revealed the crystal structure of a potentially cleavable and/or exfoliable material, while studies on natural and synthetic montbrayite (Sb-containing Au$_2$Te$_3$) claimed various chemical compositions for this low symmetry compound. Few investigations of synthetic samples have been reported for both materials, leaving much of their chemical, thermal and electronic characteristics unknown. Here, we investigate the stability, electronic properties and synthesis of the gold antimony tellurides AuSbTe and Au$_{1.9}$Sb$_{0.46}$Te$_{2.64}$ (montbrayite). Differential thermal analysis and $\textit{in situ}$ powder x-ray diffraction revealed that AuSbTe is incongruently melting, while Au$_{1.9}$Sb$_{0.46}$Te$_{2.64}$ is congruently melting. Calculations of the band structures and four-point resistivity measurements showed that AuSbTe is a semiconductor and Au$_{1.9}$Sb$_{0.46}$Te$_{2.64}$ a metal. Various synthesis attempts confirmed the limited stable chemical composition of Au$_{1.9}$Sb$_{0.46}$Te$_{2.64}$, identified successful methods to synthesize both compounds, and highlighted the challenges associated with single crystal synthesis of AuSbTe., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures
