The Boson peak is a universal phenomenon in amorphous solids. It can be observed as an anomalous contribution to the low-temperature heat capacity over the Debye model. Amorphous phase-change materials (PCMs) such as Ge-Sb-Te are a family of poor glass formers with fast crystallization kinetics, being of interest for phase-change memory applications. So far, whether Boson peaks exist in PCMs is unknown and, if they do, their relevance to PCM properties is unclear. Here, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of the pseudo-binary compositions on the tie-line between Ge15Te85 and Ge15Sb85 from a few Kelvins to the liquidus temperatures. Our results demonstrate the evidence of the pronounced Boson peaks in heat capacity below 10 K in the amorphous phase of all compositions. By fitting the data using the Debye model combined with the Einstein model, we can extract the characteristic parameters of the Boson peaks and attribute their origin to the excess vibrational modes of dynamic defects in the amorphous solids. We find that these parameters correlate almost linearly with the Sb-content of the alloys, despite the nonmonotonic behaviors in glass forming abilities. A larger contribution of excess vibrational modes correlates with a larger width of enthalpy relaxation below the glass transition temperature Tg. In a broader context, we show that the correlations of the characteristic parameters of the Boson peaks with Tg and kinetic fragility, vary according to the type of bonding. Specifically, metallic glasses and conventional covalent glasses exhibit distinct patterns of dependence, whereas PCMs manifest characteristics that lie in between. A deeper understanding of the Boson peaks in PCMs holds the promise to enable predictions of material properties at higher temperatures based on features observed in low-temperature heat capacity.

Liquid metal catalysts (LMCats), primarily molten copper, have demonstrated their efficiency in the chemical vapour deposition (CVD) approach for synthesising high-quality, large-area graphene. However, their high melting temperatures limit broader applications. Reducing the temperature of graphene production on LMCats would lead to a more efficient and cost-effective process. Here, we investigated the effects of alloying copper with a low-melting temperature metal on graphene growth in real-time. We examined a set of liquid copper-gallium alloy systems using two complementary in situ techniques: radiation-mode optical microscopy and synchrotron X-ray reflectivity (XRR). Microscopy observations revealed reduced catalytic activity and graphene quality degradation in compositions with gallium domination. The XRR confirmed the formation of single-layer graphene on alloys with up to 60 wt% of gallium. Additionally, we detected a systematic increase in adsorption height on the alloys' surface, suggesting a weaker graphene adhesion on gallium. These findings propose a trade-off between layer quality and production cost reduction is feasible. Our results offer insights into the CVD synthesis of graphene on bimetallic liquid surfaces and underscore the potential of gallium-copper alloys for enabling the direct transfer of graphene from a liquid substrate, thereby addressing the limitations imposed by high melting temperatures of conventional LMCats.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising candidates for the advanced photocatalytic active materials. These porous crystalline compounds have large active surface area and structural tunability, highly competitive with oxides, the well-established material class for the photocatalysis. However, due to their complex organic and coordination chemistry composition, photophysical mechanisms involved in the photocatalytic process in MOFs are still not well understood. Employing electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, we investigate the fundamental processes of electron and hole generation, as well as capture events that lead to the formation of various radical species in UiO-66, an archetypical MOF photocatalyst. As a result, we detected a manifold of photoinduced electron spin centers, which we subsequently analyzed and identified with the help of density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our findings provide new insights into the photo-induced charge transfer processes, which are the basis of photocatalytic activity in UiO-66. Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP-NCs) embedded in polymer matrices are gaining traction for next-generation radiation detectors. While progress has been made on green-emitting CsPbBr3 NCs, scant attention has been given to the scintillation properties of CsPbCl3 NCs, which emit size-tunable UV-blue light matching the peak efficiency of ultrafast photodetectors. In this study, we explore the scintillation characteristics of CsPbCl3 NCs produced through a scalable method and treated with CdCl2. Spectroscopic, radiometric and theoretical analysis on both untreated and treated NCs uncover deep hole trap states due to surface undercoordinated chloride ions, eliminated by Pb to Cd substitution. This yields near-perfect efficiency and resistance to polyacrylate mass-polymerization. Radiation hardness tests demonstrate stability to high gamma doses while time-resolved experiments reveal ultrafast radioluminescence with an average lifetime as short as 210 ps. These findings enhance our comprehension of LHP NCs' scintillation properties, positioning CsPbCl3 as a promising alternative to conventional fast scintillators.

Polariton condensation relies on the massive occupation of the lowest-energy polariton state beyond a required critical density. The mechanisms driving both the occupation and depopulation of the lowest-energy polariton state all rely on multi-particle scattering, and its dynamics determine the extent to which condensates can form spontaneously. To pinpoint many-body processes hindering polariton condensation in two-dimensional metal-halide semiconductors, we examine the exciton-polariton dynamics in a Fabry-P\'erot microcavity over timescales involving the dynamics of multi-particle polariton ($\ll 1$\,ps) and exciton scattering processes ($\gg 1$\,ps). We find evidence of enhanced nonlinear exciton-exciton scattering in the microcavity compared to that in the semiconductor, and that the exciton reservoir mediates polariton scattering. We posit that the complex scattering landscape between the exciton reservoir and polaritons limits the formation of polariton condensates in two-dimensional metal-halide semiconductors, and we discuss the generality of our conclusions for materials systems in which the lattice mediates strong multi-particle correlations., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures, plus supplementary material document

Strain is an effective strategy to modulate the optoelectronic properties of 2D materials, but it has been almost unexplored in layered hybrid organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites (HOIPs) due to their complex band structure and mechanical properties. Here, we investigate the temperature-dependent microphotoluminescence (PL) of 2D $(C_6H_5CH_2CH_2NH_3)_2Cs_3Pb_4Br_{13}$ HOIP subject to biaxial strain induced by a $SiO_2$ ring platform on which flakes are placed by viscoelastic stamping. At 80 K, we found that a strain of <1% can change the PL emission from a single peak (unstrained) to three well-resolved peaks. Supported by micro-Raman spectroscopy, we show that the thermomechanically generated strain modulates the bandgap due to changes in the octahedral tilting and lattice expansion. Mechanical simulations demonstrate the coexistence of tensile and compressive strain along the flake. The observed PL peaks add an interesting feature to the rich phenomenology of photoluminescence in 2D HOIPs, which can be exploited in tailored sensing and optoelectronic devices., Comment: 4 figures

Understanding the structural and magnetic properties in layered hybrid organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites (HOIPs) is key for their design and integration in spin-electronic devices. Here, we have conducted a systematic study on ten compounds to understand the effect of the transition metal (Cu$^{2+}$, Mn$^{2+}$, Co$^{2+}$), organic spacer (alkyl- and aryl-ammonium) and perovskite phase (Ruddlesden-Popper and Dion-Jacobson) on the properties of these materials. Temperature-dependent Raman measurements show that the crystals' structural phase transitions are triggered by the motional freedom of the organic cations as well as by the flexibility of the inorganic metal-halide lattice. In the case of Cu$^{2+}$ HOIPs, an increase of the in-plane anisotropy and a reduction of the octahedra interlayer distance is found to change the behavior of the HOIP from that of a 2D ferromagnet to that of a quasi-3D antiferromagnet. Mn$^{2+}$ HOIPs show inherent antiferromagnetic octahedra intralayer interactions and a phenomenologically rich magnetism, presenting spin-canting, spin-flop transitions and metamagnetism controlled by the crystal anisotropy. Co$^{2+}$ crystals with non-linked tetrahedra show a dominant paramagnetic behavior irrespective of the organic spacer and the perovskite phase. We report the electrochemical sodium-ion kiinetics and distribution of relaxation time (DRT) analysis of a newly designed mixed polyanionic NaFe$_{1.6}$V$_{0.4}$(PO$_{4}$)(SO$_{4}$)$_{2}$@CNT composite as a cathode. The specific capacity of 104 mAhg$^{-1}$ is observed at 0.1~C with the average working voltage of $\sim$3~V. Intriguingly, a remarkable rate capability and reversibility are demonstrated up to very high current rate of 25~C. The long cycling test up to 10~C shows high capacity retention even after 2000 cycles. The detailed analysis of galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) data reveal the diffusion coefficient of 10$^{-8}$--10$^{-11}$ cm$^{2}$s$^{-1}$. We find excellent stability in the thermal testing between 25--55$^\circ$C temperatures and 80\% capacity retention up to 100 cycles at 5~C. Further, we analyse the individual electrochemical processes in the time domain using the novel DRT technique at different temperatures. The {\it ex-situ} investigation shows the stable and reversible structure, morphology and electronic states of the long cycled cathode material. More importantly, we demonstrate relatively high specific energy of $\approx$155 Wh kg$^{-1}$ (considering the total active material loading of both the electrodes) at 0.2~C for full cell battery having excellent rate capability up to 10~C and long cyclic stability at 1~C., Comment: submitted

An accurate description of information is relevant for a range of problems in atomistic modeling, such as sampling methods, detecting rare events, analyzing datasets, or performing uncertainty quantification (UQ) in machine learning (ML)-driven simulations. Although individual methods have been proposed for each of these tasks, they lack a common theoretical background integrating their solutions. Here, we introduce an information theoretical framework that unifies predictions of phase transformations, kinetic events, dataset optimality, and model-free UQ from atomistic simulations, thus bridging materials modeling, ML, and statistical mechanics. We first demonstrate that, for a proposed representation, the information entropy of a distribution of atom-centered environments is a surrogate value for thermodynamic entropy. Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we show that information entropy differences from trajectories can be used to build phase diagrams, identify rare events, and recover classical theories of nucleation. Building on these results, we use this general concept of entropy to quantify information in datasets for ML interatomic potentials (IPs), informing compression, explaining trends in testing errors, and evaluating the efficiency of active learning strategies. Finally, we propose a model-free UQ method for MLIPs using information entropy, showing it reliably detects extrapolation regimes, scales to millions of atoms, and goes beyond model errors. This method is made available as the package QUESTS: Quick Uncertainty and Entropy via STructural Similarity, providing a new unifying theory for data-driven atomistic modeling and combining efforts in ML, first-principles thermodynamics, and simulations.

Exciton-phonon coupling limits the homogeneous emission linewidth of nanocrystals. Hence, a full understanding of it is crucial. In this work, we statistically investigate exciton-phonon coupling by performing single-particle spectroscopy on Zn$_{1-x}$Cd$_{x}$Se/CdS dot-in-rod nanocrystals at cryogenic temperatures ($T\approx 10~\rm{K}$). In situ cation exchange enables us to analyze different band alignments and thereby different charge-carrier distributions. We find that the relative intensities of the longitudinal optical S- and Se-type phonon replicas correlate with the charge-carrier distribution. Metal halide perovskites have emerged as an exciting class of materials for applications in solar energy harvesting, optical devices, catalysis, and other photophysical applications. Many of the exciting properties of halide perovskites are tied to their soft, dynamic, and anharmonic lattice. In particular, the precise coupling between anharmonic lattice dynamics and electronic fluctuations is not completely understood. To build an understanding of this coupling, we use ab initio molecular dynamics simulations supplemented by the calculation of maximally localized Wannier functions to carry out a dynamic group theory analysis of local electron density fluctuations and how these fluctuations are coupled to lattice fluctuations in the model inorganic halide perovskite CsSnBr3. We detail symmetry-dependent couplings between vibrational modes, including octahedral tilting. Importantly, we suggest that the large anharmonicity of some of the vibrational modes in CsSnBr3 result from electron rotation--nuclear translation coupling, in analogy to rotation--translation coupling effects in molecular plastic crystals. We also identify electronic fluctuations in the Cs cation that couple to distortions in the surrounding Sn-Br cubic coordination environment. We anticipate that our approach and resulting insights into electronic fluctuations will aid in further understanding the role of the fluctuating lattice in determining important physical properties of halide perovskites and beyond., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures

Machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) have become a workhorse of modern atomistic simulations, and recently published universal MLIPs, pre-trained on large datasets, have demonstrated remarkable accuracy and generalizability. However, the computational cost of MLIPs limits their applicability to chemically disordered systems requiring large simulation cells or to sample-intensive statistical methods. Here, we report the use of continuous and differentiable alchemical degrees of freedom in atomistic materials simulations, exploiting the fact that graph neural network MLIPs represent discrete elements as real-valued tensors. The proposed method introduces alchemical atoms with corresponding weights into the input graph, alongside modifications to the message-passing and readout mechanisms of MLIPs, and allows smooth interpolation between the compositional states of materials. The end-to-end differentiability of MLIPs enables efficient calculation of the gradient of energy with respect to the compositional weights. Leveraging these gradients, we propose methodologies for optimizing the composition of solid solutions towards target macroscopic properties and conducting alchemical free energy simulations to quantify the free energy of vacancy formation and composition changes. The approach offers an avenue for extending the capabilities of universal MLIPs in the modeling of compositional disorder and characterizing the phase stabilities of complex materials systems.

Gas separation using polymer membranes promises to dramatically drive down the energy, carbon, and water intensity of traditional thermally driven separation, but developing the membrane materials is challenging. Here, we demonstrate a novel graph machine learning (ML) strategy to guide the experimental discovery of synthesizable polymer membranes with performances simultaneously exceeding the empirical upper bounds in multiple industrially important gas separation tasks. Two predicted candidates are synthesized and experimentally validated to perform beyond the upper bounds for multiple gas pairs (O2/N2, H2/CH4, and H2/N2). Notably, the O2/N2 separation selectivity is 1.6-6.7 times higher than existing polymer membranes. The molecular origin of the high performance is revealed by combining the inherent interpretability of our ML model, experimental characterization, and molecule-level simulation. Our study presents a unique explainable ML-experiment combination to tackle challenging energy material design problems in general, and the discovered polymers are beneficial for industrial gas separation.

In this work we make some progress on studying four center integrals for the Coulomb energy for both Hartree Fock (HF) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations for small molecules. We consider basis wave functions of the form of an arbitrary radial wave function multiplied by a spherical harmonic and study four center Coulomb integrals for them. We reformulated these Coulomb four center integrals in terms of some derivatives of integrals of nearly factorable functions which then depend on the Bessel transform of the radial wave functions considered., Comment: Comments welcome

Developing solid-state hydrogen storage materials is as pressing as ever, which requires a comprehensive understanding of the dehydrogenation chemistry of a solid-state hydride. Transition state search and kinetics calculations are essential to understanding and designing high-performance solid-state hydrogen storage materials by filling in the knowledge gap that current experimental techniques cannot measure. However, the ab initio analysis of these processes is computationally expensive and time-consuming. Searching for descriptors to accurately predict the energy barrier is urgently needed, to accelerate the prediction of hydrogen storage material properties and identify the opportunities and challenges in this field. Herein, we develop a data-driven model to describe and predict the dehydrogenation barriers of a typical solid-state hydrogen storage material, magnesium hydride (MgH2), based on the combination of the crystal Hamilton population orbital of Mg-H bond and the distance between atomic hydrogen. By deriving the distance energy ratio, this model elucidates the key chemistry of the reaction kinetics. All the parameters in this model can be directly calculated with significantly less computational cost than conventional transition state search, so that the dehydrogenation performance of hydrogen storage materials can be predicted efficiently. Finally, we found that this model leads to excellent agreement with typical experimental measurements reported to date and provides clear design guidelines on how to propel the performance of MgH2 closer to the target set by the United States Department of Energy (US-DOE).

Magnesium ion batteries (MIBs) are a potential field for the energy storage of the future but are restricted by insufficient rate capability and rapid capacity degradation. Magnesium-sodium hybrid ion batteries (MSHBs) are an effective way to address these problems. Here, we report a new type of MSHBs that use layered sodium vanadate ((Na, Mn)V8O20 5H2O, Mn-NVO) cathodes coupled with an organic 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PTCDI) anode in Mg2+/Na+ hybrid electrolytes. During electrochemical cycling, Mg2+ and Na+ co-participate in the cathode reactions, and the introduction of Na+ promotes the structural stability of the Mn-NVO cathode, as cleared by several ex-situ characterizations. Consequently, the Mn-NVO cathode presents great specific capacity (249.9 mAh g-1 at 300 mA g-1) and cycling (1500 cycles at 1500 mA g-1) in the Mg2+/Na+ hybrid electrolytes. Besides, full battery displays long lifespan with 10,000 cycles at 1000 mA g-1. The rate performance and cycling stability of MSHBs have been improved by an economical and scalable method, and the mechanism for these improvements was discussed.

In this article, we present an interpolative separable density fitting (ISDF) based algorithm to calculate exact exchange in periodic mean field calculations. In the past, decomposing the two-electron integrals into tensor hypercontraction (THC) form using ISDF was the most expensive step of the entire mean field calculation. Here we show that by using a multigrid-ISDF algorithm both the memory and the CPU cost of this step can be reduced. The CPU cost is brought down from cubic scaling to quadratic scaling with a low computational prefactor which reduces the cost by almost two orders of magnitude. Thus, in the new algorithm, the cost of performing ISDF is largely negligible compared to other steps. Along with the CPU cost, the memory cost of storing the factorized two-electron integrals is also reduced by a factor of up to 35. With the current algorithm, we can perform Hartree-Fock calculations on a Diamond supercell containing more than 17,000 basis functions and more than 1,500 electrons on a single node with no disk usage. For this calculation, the cost of constructing the exchange matrix is only a factor of four slower than the cost of diagonalizing the Fock matrix. Augmenting our approach with linear scaling algorithms can further speed up the calculations.

Since the invention of polymer networks in the 19th century (e.g., crosslinked natural rubber by Goodyear), it has been a dogma that stiffer networks are less stretchable, a trade-off inherent to the molecular nature of polymer network strands. Here, we report a universal strategy for decoupling the stiffness and extensibility of single-network elastomers. Instead of using linear polymers as network strands, we use foldable bottlebrush polymers, which feature a collapsed backbone grafted with many linear side chains. Upon elongation, the collapsed backbone unfolds to release stored length, enabling remarkable extensibility. By contrast, the network elastic modulus is inversely proportional to the network strand mass and is determined by the side chains. We validate this concept by creating a series of unentangled single-network elastomers with nearly constant Young's modulus (30 kPa) while increasing tensile breaking strain by 40-fold, from 20% to 800%. We show that this strategy applies to networks of different polymer species and topologies. Modeling ion correlations in inhomogeneous polymers and soft matters with spatially varying ionic strength or dielectric permittivity remains a great challenge. Here, we develop a new theory which systematically incorporates electrostatic fluctuations into the self-consistent field theory for polymers. Applied to polyelectrolyte brushes, the theory predicts that ion correlations induce non-monotonic change of the brush height: collapse followed by reexpansion. The scaling analysis elucidates the competition between the repulsive osmotic pressure due to translational entropy and the attraction induced by ion correlations. We also clarify the absence of causal relationship between the brush collapse-reexpansion and the inversion of the surface electrostatic potential. Furthermore, strong ion correlations can trigger microphase separation, either in the lateral direction as pinned micelles or in the normal direction as oscillatory layers. Our theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results reported in the literature.

The success behind many pseudopotential methods such as Projected Augmented Waves (PAW) and Phillips-Kleinman pseudopotential methods is that these methods are all electron methods in disguise. For the Phillips Kleinman and PAW methods we show that there is an all electron formulation. In the all electron formulation there are regular low wavevector wavefunctions and several, specially chosen, high wavevector wavefunctions that are specialized to the atomic environment. Using this as inspiration here we propose a new, PAW pseudopotential inspired, basis set method for small molecules, where we use the recently introduced LO or lo (Localized orbitals) basis set is paired with a Gaussian basis for a hybrid basis for small molecules., Comment: Comments welcome, V2:Minor typos corrected

The structural, dielectric, and thermodynamic properties of the hydrogen-bonded ferroelectric crystal potassium dihydrogen phosphate ($\mathbf{KH_2PO_4}$), KDP for short, differ significantly from those of DKDP ($\mathbf{KD_2PO_4}$). It is well established that deuteration affects the interplay of hydrogen-bond switches and heavy ion displacements that underlie the emergence of macroscopic polarization, but a detailed microscopic model is missing. Here we show that all-atom path integral molecular dynamics simulations can predict the isotope effects, revealing the microscopic mechanism that differentiates KDP and DKDP. Proton tunneling in the hydrogen bonds generates phosphate configurations that do not contribute to the polarization. These dipolar defects are always present in KDP, but disappear at low temperatures in DKDP, which behaves more classically. Quantum disorder confers residual entropy to ferroelectric KDP, explaining its lower spontaneous polarization and transition entropy relative to DKDP. Tunneling should also contribute to the anomalous heat capacity observed in KDP near absolute zero. The prominent role of quantum fluctuations in KDP is related to the unusual strength of the hydrogen bonds in this system and should be equally important in the other crystals of the KDP family, which exhibit similar isotope effects.

We develop a framework for on-the-fly machine learned force field molecular dynamics simulations based on the multipole featurization scheme that overcomes the bottleneck with the number of chemical elements. The pressure-induced polymorphism of binary octect compounds has long been considered a settled problem although the possible atomic disordering of some phases remains a puzzling observation. Taking GaP as a case study, we conclude, through x-ray microdiffraction and first-principles calculations, that its high-pressure phase II (previously reported as being disordered) adopts in fact an ordered base-centered monoclinic structure previously unknown in this class of compounds. The formation of layered patterns with variable degrees of interlayer dimerization, as observed in GaP, marks a paradigm shift of our understanding of ordering in octect high-pressure phases which calls for a more extensive re-examination. A rich polymorphism with fine tuning of chemical and physical properties can be envisioned.

Hydrogen embrittlement in metals (HE) is a serious challenge for the use of high strength materials in engineering practice and a major barrier to the use of hydrogen for global decarbonization. Here we describe the factors and variables that determine HE susceptibility and provide an overview of the latest understanding of HE mechanisms. We discuss hydrogen uptake and how it can be managed. We summarize hydrogen trapping and the techniques used for its characterization. We also review literature that argues that hydrogen trapping can be used to decrease HE susceptibility. We discuss the future research that is required to advance the understanding of HE and hydrogen trapping and to develop HE-resistant alloys.

The exploration of two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials has shown great promise and interest in tuning the magnetic and electronic properties as well as studying magneto-optical effects. The current work investigates the control of magneto-optical interactions in alloyed MnxZn1-xPS3 lamellar semiconductor single crystals, with the Mn/Zn ratio regulating the coupling strength. Magnetic susceptibility results show a retention of AFM order followed by a decrease in N\'eel temperatures down to ~ 40% Mn concentration, below which a paramagnetic behavior is observed. Absorption measurements reveal an increase in bandgap energy with higher Zn(II) concentration, and the presence of Mn(II) d-d transition below the absorption edge. DFT+U approach qualitatively explained the origin and the position of the experimentally observed mid band-gap states in pure MnPS3, and corresponding peaks visible in the alloyed systems MnxZn1-xPS3. Accordingly, emission at 1.3 eV in all alloyed compounds results from recombination from a 4T1g Mn(II) excited state to a hybrid p-d state at the valence band. Most significant, temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) intensity trends demonstrate strong magneto-optical coupling in compositions with x > 0.65. This study underscores the potential of tailored alloy compositions as a means to control magnetic and optical properties in 2D materials, paving the way for advances in spin-based technologies.

Chemical interface damping is a change in the effective collision frequency of conduction band electrons in metal originating from a chemical change of the metal interface. In this work, we present in-situ ellipsometric measurements that reveal the chemical interface damping effect from electrochemical oxidation of single crystal and polycrystalline gold films. We observe an increase in collision frequency of up to 21 meV for single-crystalline gold. To compare to results obtained with thiols and metal-oxides on gold nanoparticles, we normalize the collision frequency by the electron mean free path to the surface of the structure. We show that electrochemical gold oxidation provides a stronger effect on collision frequency than these coatings. Similar ellipsometric experiments have previously been conducted to investigate the optical properties of gold oxide, but without taking chemical interface damping into account. The change in reflection from oxidation of gold was solely attributed to the oxide coating. We also show that the chemical interface damping effect saturates at a larger effective oxide thickness, which is attributed to the stabilization of the gold-oxide interface.

We present the formalism and implementation of quasi-particle self-consistent GW (qsGW) and eigenvalue only quasi-particle self-consistent GW (evGW) adapted to standard quantum chemistry packages. Our implementation is benchmarked against high-level quantum chemistry computations (coupled-cluster theory) and experimental results using a representative set of molecules. Furthermore, we compare the qsGW approach for five molecules relevant for organic photovoltaics to self-consistent GW results (scGW) and analyze the effects of the self-consistency on the ground state density by comparing calculated dipole moments to their experimental values. We show that qsGW makes a significant improvement over conventional G0W0 and that partially self-consistent flavors (in particular evGW) can be excellent alternatives.

Members of the DFT+U family of functionals are increasingly prevalent methods of addressing errors intrinsic to (semi-) local exchange-correlation functionals at minimum computational cost, but require their parameters U and J to be calculated in situ for a given system of interest, simulation scheme, and runtime parameters. The SCF linear response approach offers ab initio acquisition of the U and has recently been extended to compute the J analogously, which measures localized errors related to exchange-like effects. We introduce a renovated post-processor, the lrUJ utility, together with this detailed best-practices guide, to enable users of the popular, open-source Abinit first-principles simulation suite to engage easily with in situ Hubbard parameters and streamline their incorporation into material simulations of interest. Features of this utility, which may also interest users and developers of other DFT codes, include $n$-degree polynomial regression, error analysis, Python plotting facilities, didactic documentation, and avenues for further developments. The prediction of battery rate performance traditionally relies on computation-intensive numerical simulations. While simplified analytical models have been developed to accelerate the calculation, they usually assume battery performance to be controlled by a single rate-limiting process, such as solid diffusion or electrolyte transport. Here, we propose an improved analytical model that could be applied to battery discharging under mixed control of mass transport in both solid and electrolyte phases. Compared to previous single-particle models extended to incorporate the electrolyte kinetics, our model is able to predict the effect of salt depletion on diminishing the discharge capacity, a phenomenon that becomes important in thick electrodes and/or at high rates. The model demonstrates good agreement with the full-order simulation over a wide range of cell parameters and offers a speedup of over 600 times at the same time. Furthermore, it could be combined with gradient-based optimization algorithms to very efficiently search for the optimal battery cell configurations while numerical simulation fails at the task due to its inability to accurately evaluate the derivatives of the objective function. The high efficiency and the analytical nature of the model render it a powerful tool for battery cell design and optimization.

We introduce an electron-photon exchange-correlation functional for quantum electrodynamical density-functional theory (QEDFT). The approach, photon MBD (pMBD), is inspired by the many-body dispersion (MBD) method for weak intermolecular interactions, which is generalized to include both electronic and photonic (electromagnetic) degrees of freedom on the same footing. We demonstrate that pMBD accurately captures effects that arise in the context of strong light-matter interactions, such as anisotropic electron-photon interactions, beyond single-photon effects, and cavity modulated van der Waals interactions. Quantum chemical methods and time-resolved laser spectroscopy are employed to elucidate ultrafast charge separation processes in triphenylamine (TPA) derivatives upon photoexcitation. When changing the ambient solvent from generic ones to those capable of accepting electrons, such as chloroform, a vastly extended and multifaceted photochemistry is observed. Following the initial excitation, two concurrent charge transfer processes are identified. Firstly, when the TPA derivative and solvent molecules are correctly positioned, an electron transfer to the solvent molecule with immediate charge separation takes place. Consequently, this process gives rise to the formation of the corresponding radical cation of the TPA derivative. This highly reactive species can subsequently combine with other TPA derivative molecules to yield dimeric species. Secondly, when the molecular positioning upon photoexcitation is not optimal, relaxation back to the $\mathrm{S_1}$ state occurs. From this state, an electron transfer process leads to the formation of a charge transfer complex. In this complex, the negatively charged solvent molecule remains closely associated with the positively charged TPA derivative. Within 30 picoseconds, the charges within this complex recombine, yielding a triplet state. This transition to the triplet state is driven by a lower reaction barrier for charge separation compared to the formation of the singlet state., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Lattice softness has a significant impact on charge carrier dynamics in condensed matter systems, contributing to the emergence of various properties and functions. Examples include the remarkable carrier lifetimes and defect tolerances of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites. Recent studies suggest the contribution of quartic anharmonicity of the lattice vibrations. The quartic anharmonicity can be discussed with a double-well potential, and the transition between the two minima can be coarse-grained as a two-state jump stochastic process. Such a stochastic approach is typically employed to describe dynamic fluctuations introduced into a system by two-state transitions in the surroundings. To investigate charge transport in materials, however, it is crucial to describe not only the fluctuations but also the dynamic lattice distortion associated with charge transport. Therefore, there is a need for a theory to describe the charge carrier dynamics proceeding alongside the lattice distortion dynamics. In this study, we present a theory that describes quantum dynamics under the influence of an environment with two stable states, termed a bistable environment. The theory describes the effects of fluctuations and dissipation induced from the bistable environment in a reasonable manner, and the effects exhibit a different temperature dependence than the widely employed Gaussian environment. The physical implication of this temperature dependence is provided in terms of the environmental dynamics. The results of this study are expected to provide a step forward in describing charge carrier dynamics in materials with lattice softness and pronounced lattice anharmonicity, e.g., hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites. Moreover, these findings represent an advancement in our understanding of and capacity to predict and control the physical properties and functions of these materials.

Mixed solid compounds are employed in a vast array of applications so an accurate determination of their chemical compositions is of crucial importance. All current characterization methods require specially-treated samples so the availability of a more practical method with similar accuracy should alleviate the quantification process. In this work, we show how the doping concentration $\delta$ (or isotope concentration) of a mixed solid compound in powdered form, where both parent compounds are diamagnetic, can be obtained from the measurement of the mass magnetization. We exploit the additive nature of the molar magnetic susceptibility $\chi_{Mol}$ and molar mass to construct two equations with the same two unknowns in the $\chi_{Mol}$ vs. $\delta$ space to simultaneously solve $\chi_{Mol}$ and $\delta$ of a mixed solid. Eight examples are provided to show the wide applicability of this method: NH$_{4(1-\delta)}$D$_{4\delta}$Br (where D = $^2$H), NH$_4$I$_{1-\delta}$Br$_\delta$, (NH$_4$H$_2$)$_{1-\delta}$(ND$_4$D$_2$)$_\delta$PO$_4$, C$_{48}$H$_{22+6\delta}$Br$_{6(1-\delta)}$O$_{32}$Zr$_6$, [creatine]$_{1-\delta}$[$_D$-glucose]$_\delta$, [$_L$-glutamic acid]$_{1-\delta}$[$_L$-leucine]$_\delta$, [terephthalic acid]$_{1-\delta}$[trimesic acid]$_\delta$ and [p-terphenyl]$_{1-\delta}$[triphenylphosphine]$_\delta$. Strain at interfaces may profoundly impact the microstructure and properties of materials; thus, it is a major consideration when designing and engineering materials. Dislocation formation is a commonly known mechanism to release mismatch strain at solid-solid interfaces. However, it is still unclear about how materials accommodate interfacial strain under drastically accelerated structural transformation kinetics, since it is extremely challenging to directly observe the atomic structure evolution of fast-propagating interfaces. Utilizing liquid phase transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we have achieved atomic-scale imaging of hydrogen-induced phase transformations of palladium nanocrystals with different transformation speeds. Our observation reveals that the fast phase transformation occurs with an expanded interface of mixed $\alpha$- and $\beta$-$\mathrm{PdH}_x$ phases, and tilting of (020) planes to accommodate mismatch strain. In contrast, slow phase transformations lead to sharp interfaces with slipping misfit dislocations. Our kinetic Monte Carlo simulations show that fast phase transformation pushes the system far-from-equilibrium, generically roughening the interface; however, a smooth boundary minimizes strain near-equilibrium. Sulphur vacancies in MoS$_2$ on Au(111) have been shown to be negatively charged as reflected by a Kondo resonance. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy to show that these vacancies serve as anchoring sites for thiol-based molecules (CF$_3$-3P-SH) with two distinct reaction products, one of them showing a Kondo resonance. Based on comparisons with density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, including a random structure search and computation of energies and electronic properties at a hybrid exchange-correlation functional level, we conclude that both anchored molecules are charge neutral. One of them is an anchored intact CF$_3$-3P-SH molecule while the other one is the result of catalytically activated dehydrogenation to CF$_3$-3P-S with subsequent anchoring. Our investigations highlight a perspective of functionalizing defects with thiol-terminated molecules that can be equipped with additional functional groups, such as charge donor- or acceptor-moieties, switching units or magnetic centers.

Large language models (LLMs) have gained widespread interest due to their ability to process human language and perform tasks on which they have not been explicitly trained. This is relevant for the chemical sciences, which face the problem of small and diverse datasets that are frequently in the form of text. LLMs have shown promise in addressing these issues and are increasingly being harnessed to predict chemical properties, optimize reactions, and even design and conduct experiments autonomously. However, we still have only a very limited systematic understanding of the chemical reasoning capabilities of LLMs, which would be required to improve models and mitigate potential harms. Here, we introduce "ChemBench," an automated framework designed to rigorously evaluate the chemical knowledge and reasoning abilities of state-of-the-art LLMs against the expertise of human chemists. We curated more than 7,000 question-answer pairs for a wide array of subfields of the chemical sciences, evaluated leading open and closed-source LLMs, and found that the best models outperformed the best human chemists in our study on average. The models, however, struggle with some chemical reasoning tasks that are easy for human experts and provide overconfident, misleading predictions, such as about chemicals' safety profiles. These findings underscore the dual reality that, although LLMs demonstrate remarkable proficiency in chemical tasks, further research is critical to enhancing their safety and utility in chemical sciences. Our findings also indicate a need for adaptations to chemistry curricula and highlight the importance of continuing to develop evaluation frameworks to improve safe and useful LLMs.

NASA mandate is a human mission to Mars in the 2030s and sustained exploration of Mars requires in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). Exploiting the Martian water cycle (alongside perchlorate salts that depress the freezing point of water to less than 213K) and the available 95 volume percent atmospheric CO2, we detail an ultra-low temperature (255K) CO2-H2O electrolyzer to produce methane fuel and life-supporting oxygen on Mars. Methane production is thermodynamically favored across a range of operational pressures and temperatures and our electrolyzer polarization model concurred with reported experimental performance. A hypothetical 10-cell, 100 square cm electrode-area-per-cell electrolyzer produced 0.31g per W per day of CH4 and 3.54g per W per day of O2 at 2V per cell (operating voltage) versus 0.8g per W per day of O2 produced by the Mars Oxygen in-situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE) from the Mars 2020 mission (MOXIE produces no fuel). Material performance requirements are presented to show that this technology is an energy-efficient complement to the MOXIE high temperature approach.

The kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on the practical air cathode in a Lithium air cell, which is conventionally composed of porous carbon with or without catalysts supported on it, was investigated. The mechanism and kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was studied on a porous carbon electrode in an oxygen saturated solution of 0.1M Lithium bis-trifluoromethanesulfonimidate (LiTFSI) in Dimethoxyethane (DME) using cyclic voltammetery (CV) and the rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) technique. The oxygen reduction and evolution reactions were found to occur at similar potentials to those observed on a smooth, planar glassy carbon (GC) electrode. The effect of the porosity and the resultant increase in surface area were readily observed in the increase in the transient time required for the intermediates to reach the ring and the much larger disk currents (compared to smooth, planar GC) recorded respectively. The RRDE data was analyzed using a kinetic model previously developed by us and the rate constant of the elementary reactions calculated. The rates constant for the electrochemical reactions were found to be similar in magnitude to the rate constants calculated for smooth GC disks. The porosity of the electrode was found to decrease the rate of desorption of the intermediate and the product and delay their diffusion by shifting it from a Fickian regime in the electrolyte bulk to the Knudsen regime in the film pores. Thus, it is shown that the effect of the electrode porosity on the kinetics of the ORR is physical rather than electrochemical.

Identifying local structural motifs and packing patterns of molecular solids is a challenging task for both simulation and experiment. We demonstrate two novel approaches to characterize local environments in different polymorphs of molecular crystals using learning models that employ either flexibly learned or handcrafted molecular representations. In the first case, we follow our earlier work on graph learning in molecular crystals, deploying an atomistic graph convolutional network, combined with molecule-wise aggregation, to enable per-molecule environmental classification. For the second model, we develop a new set of descriptors based on symmetry functions combined with a point-vector representation of the molecules, encoding information about the positions as well as relative orientations of the molecule. We demonstrate very high classification accuracy for both approaches on urea and nicotinamide crystal polymorphs, and practical applications to the analysis of dynamical trajectory data for nanocrystals and solid-solid interfaces. Both architectures are applicable to a wide range of molecules and diverse topologies, providing an essential step in the exploration of complex condensed matter phenomena.

An electro-chemo-mechanical phase-field formulation is developed to simulate pitting and stress corrosion in polycrystalline materials. The formulation incorporates dependencies of mechanical properties and corrosion potential on crystallographic orientation. The model considers the formation and charging dynamics of an electric double layer through a new general boundary condition for the solution potential. The potential of the model is demonstrated by simulating corrosion in polycrystalline materials with various grain morphology distributions. The results show that incorporating the underlying microstructure yields more extensive defects, faster defect kinetics, and irregular pit and crack shapes relative to a microstructurally-insensitive homogeneous material scenario.

In the race to reduce global CO2 emissions and achieve net-zero, chemomechanics must play a critical role in the technological development of current and next-generation batteries to improve their energy storage capabilities and their lifetime. Many degradation processes arise through mechanics via the development of diffusion-induced stress and volumetric strains within the various constituent materials in a battery. From particle cracking in lithium-ion batteries to lithium dendrite-based fracture of solid electrolytes in solid-state batteries, it is clear that significant barriers exist in the development of these energy storage systems, where chemomechanics plays a central part. To accelerate technological and scientific advances in this area, multi-scale and highly coupled multiphysics modelling must be carried out that includes mechanics-based phenomena. In this perspective article, we provide an introduction to chemomechanical modelling, the various physical problems that it addresses, and the issues that need to be resolved in order to expand its use within the field of battery technology.

In the realm of photochemistry, the significance of double excitations (also known as doubly-excited states), where two electrons are concurrently elevated to higher energy levels, lies in their involvement in key electronic transitions essential in light-induced chemical reactions as well as their challenging nature from the computational theoretical chemistry point of view. Based on state-of-the-art electronic structure methods (such as high-order coupled-cluster, selected configuration interaction, and multiconfigurational methods), we improve and expand our prior set of accurate reference excitation energies for electronic states exhibiting a substantial amount of double excitations [http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/acs.jctc.8b01205; Loos et al. J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2019, 15, 1939]. This extended collection encompasses 47 electronic transitions across 26 molecular systems that we separate into two distinct subsets: (i) 28 "genuine" doubly-excited states where the transitions almost exclusively involve doubly-excited configurations and (ii) 19 "partial" doubly-excited states which exhibit a more balanced character between singly- and doubly-excited configurations. For each subset, we assess the performance of high-order coupled-cluster (CC3, CCSDT, CC4, and CCSDTQ) and multiconfigurational methods (CASPT2, CASPT3, PC-NEVPT2, and SC-NEVPT2). Using as a probe the percentage of single excitations involved in a given transition ($\%T_1$) computed at the CC3 level, we also propose a simple correction that reduces the errors of CC3 by a factor of 3, for both sets of excitations. Surfaces of colloidal nanocrystals are frequently passivated with carboxylate ligands which exert significant effects on their optoelectronic properties and chemical stability. Experimentally, binding geometries of such ligands are typically investigated using vibrational spectroscopy, but the interpretation of the IR signal is usually not trivial. Here, using machine-learning (ML) algorithms trained on DFT data, we simulate an IR spectrum of a lead-rich PbS nanocrystal passivated with butyrate ligands. We obtain a good agreement with the experimental signal and demonstrate that the observed line shape stems from a very wide range of `tilted-bridge'-type geometries and does not indicate a coexistence of `bridging' and `chelating' binding modes as has been previously assumed. This work illustrates limitations of empirical spectrum assignment and demonstrates the effectiveness of ML-driven molecular dynamics simulations in reproducing IR spectra of nanoscopic systems., Comment: Submitted. The combination of isochoric heating of solids by free electron lasers (FEL) and in situ diagnostics by X-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS) allows for measurements of material properties at warm dense matter (WDM) conditions relevant for astrophysics, inertial confinement fusion, and material science. In the case of metals, the FEL beam pumps energy directly into electrons with the lattice structure of ions being nearly unaffected. This leads to a unique transient state that gives rise to a set of interesting physical effects, which can serve as a reliable testing platform for WDM theories. In this work, we present extensive linear-response time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) results for the electronic dynamic structure factor of isochorically heated copper with a face-centered cubic lattice. At ambient conditions, the plasmon is heavily damped due to the presence of $d$-band excitations, and its position is independent of the wavenumber. In contrast, the plasmon feature starts to dominate the excitation spectrum and has a Bohm-Gross type plasmon dispersion for temperatures $T \geq 4~{\rm eV}$, where the quasi-free electrons in the interstitial region are in the WDM regime. In addition, we analyze the thermal changes in the $d$-band excitations and outline the possibility to use future XRTS measurements of isochorically heated copper as a controlled testbed for WDM theories.

Adsorption in nanoporous materials is one strategy that can be used to store hydrogen at conditions of temperature and pressure that are economically viable. Adsorption capacity of nanoporous materials depends on surface area which can be enhanced by incorporating a hierarchical pore structure. We report grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulation results on the adsorption of hydrogen in hierarchical models of silicalite that incorporate 4 nm wide mesopores in addition to the 0.5 nm wide micropores at 298 K, using different force fields to model hydrogen. Our results suggest that incorporating mesopores in silicalite can enhance adsorption by at least 20% if electrostatic interactions are not included and up to 100% otherwise. Incorporating electrostatic interactions results in higher adsorption by close to 100% at lower pressures for hierarchical silicalite whereas for unmodified silicalite, it is less significant at all pressures. Hydroxylating the mesopore surface in hierarchical silicalite results in an enhancement in adsorption at pressures below 1 atm and suppression by up to 20 % at higher pressures. Temperature dependence at selected pressures exhibits expected decrease in adsorption amounts at higher temperatures. Effective regulation of the morphology of transition metal spinel structures is crucial for creating efficient and stable bifunctional catalysts for electrocatalysis of water. In this work, micro-flower NiCo2O4 (F-NCO) assembled by nanosheets via a chemical template method for the simultaneous promotion of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Electronic microscope analysis revealed that the thickness of the F-NCO catalyst was only 2.7% of that of the NiCo2O4 bulk (B-NCO), and this ultrathin lamellar structure was conducive to further exposure of the active site and improved reaction kinetics. The F-NCO catalyst exhibited superior HER and OER performance (10 = 236 and 310 mV) and robust long-term stability over the B-NCO catalyst in 1.0 M KOH, with a 2.68-fold and 4.16-fold increase in active surface area and a 0.42-fold and 0.61-fold decrease in charge transfer resistance values, respectively. This micro-flower-structured electrode has remarkable electrocatalytic property and long-term durability, providing a novel insight for characterizing cost-effective and high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation of nitrobenzene (Ph-NO2) reaction (EHNR) has been considered as a potential alternative to the traditional thermocatalytic process in the production of high-value aniline (Ph-NH2). However, due to the absence of robust catalyst and low surface H* coverage, the EHNR faces the challenges of undesired performance and indetermined mechanism. Herein, we construct a type of noble-metal free topological FeSi (M-FeSi) materials through a solvent-free microwave strategy for efficient EHNR in neutral medium. Impressively, benefiting from abundant active H* intermediates on the surface of M-FeSi catalyst, the topological M-FeSi catalyst exhibits 99.7% conversion of Ph-NO2 and 93.8% yield of Ph-NH2 after 200 C in neutral medium, which are superior to previous candidates and FeSi catalyst synthesized via the traditional arc-melting method under same conditions. Besides, theoretical calculations validate that high surface H* coverage over M-FeSi catalyst is conducive to switching the rate-determining step from Ph-NO2* Ph-NO* to Ph-NO* Ph-NHOH*, and thus decreasing the total energy barrier of electrocatalytic Ph-NH2 production.

In this work we present a new basis set for electronic structures (Density Functional Theory (DFT)) calculations. This basis set extends Soler Williams Linearized Augmented Plane Wave (SLAPW) basis sets by allowing variable Muffin Tin (MT) sphere radii for the different angular momentum channels and for different magnitude wave vectors of the augmented plane waves. With the correct choice of MT radius, this allows us to match additional derivatives of the wave function at the MT radius without having to resort to additional higher derivative terms as part of the wave function expansion inside the MT sphere. This should lead to low wave vector basis set and low linearization energy errors, arguably as good as APW basis set size and LAPW basis linearization errors. We call these basis sets SAPWMR and SLAPWMR depending on the number of derivative like wave functions kept inside the MT radii. Similarly local orbital (LO and lo basis wave functions depending on the number of derivative terms in the MT radius) are suggested with a variable radius. that reduces the number of derivative like terms needed to make them continuous or continuously differentiable. As such semi-core states can also be well handled by our methods. Furthermore in the appendix Full Potential Hamiltonian calculations (FLAPW) are extended to FSLAPWMR full potential calculations for Hamiltonian matrix elements. Designing polymers with high intrinsic thermal conductivity (TC) is critically important for the thermal management of organic electronics and photonics. However, this is a challenging task owing to the diversity of the chemical space and the barriers to advanced synthetic experiments/characterization techniques for polymers. In this Tutorial, the fundamentals and implementation of combining classical molecular dynamics simulation and machine learning (ML) for the development of polymers with high TC are comprehensively introduced. We begin by describing the core components of a universal ML framework, involving polymer datasets, property calculators, feature engineering and informatics algorithms. Then, the process of constructing interpretable regression algorithms for TC prediction is introduced, aiming to extract the underlying relationships between microstructures and TCs for polymers. We also explore the design of sequence-ordered polymers with high TC using lightweight and mainstream active learning algorithms. Lastly, we conclude by addressing the current limitations and suggesting potential avenues for future research on this topic.

X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) is generally used for chemical analysis of surfaces and interfaces. This method involves the analysis of changes in binding energies and peak shapes of elements under consideration. It is also possible to use XPS to study the effect of X-ray radiation on the electrical properties of thin films. We measured the Si 2p peak using X-ray powers of 300 W and 150 W on approximately 135 nm silicon dioxide (SiO2) thin films grown on both n- and p-type substrates while applying DC or AC external biases. Using the shifts in the binding energy of the Si 2p peak, we calculated the resistances and the capacitances of the SiO2 thin film. The way that the binding energies of the Si 2p peak and the capacitance of the thin film change as a function of the type of Si substrate and the power of the X-ray are explained using band bending.
