We consider the luminosity and environmental dependence of structural parameters of lenticular galaxies in the near-infrared K band. Using a two-dimensional galaxy image decomposition technique, we extract bulge and disk structural parameters for a sample of 36 lenticular galaxies observed by us in the K band. By combining data from the literature for field and cluster lenticulars with our data, we study correlations between parameters that characterise the bulge and the disk as a function of luminosity and environment. We find that scaling relations such as the Kormendy relation, photometric plane and other correlations involving bulge and disk parameters show a luminosity dependence. This dependence can be explained in terms of galaxy formation models in which faint lenticulars (M_T > -24.5) formed via secular formation processes that likely formed the pseudobulges of late-type disk galaxies, while brighter lenticulars (M_T < -24.5) formed through a different formation mechanism most likely involving major mergers. On probing variations in lenticular properties as a function of environment, we find that faint cluster lenticulars show systematic differences with respect to faint field lenticulars. These differences support the idea that the bulge and disk components fade after the galaxy falls into a cluster, while simultaneously undergoing a transformation from spiral to lenticular morphologies., Comment: Published in MNRAS; added correct Bibliographic reference; 10 pages, 2 tables and 11 figures

We investigate the characteristic radiative efficiency \epsilon, Eddington ratio \lambda, and duty cycle P_0 of high-redshift active galactic nuclei (AGN), drawing on measurements of the AGN luminosity function at z=3-6 and, especially, on recent measurements of quasar clustering at z=3-4.5 from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The free parameters of our models are \epsilon, \lambda, and the normalization, scatter, and redshift evolution of the relation between black hole mass \mbh and halo virial velocity V_vir. We compute the luminosity function from the implied growth of the black hole mass function and the quasar correlation length from the bias of the host halos. We test our adopted formulae for the halo mass function and halo bias against measurements from the large N-body simulation developed by the MICE collaboration. The strong clustering of AGNs observed at z=3 and, especially, at z=4 implies that massive black holes reside in rare, massive dark matter halos. Reproducing the observed luminosity function then requires high efficiency \epsilon and/or low Eddington ratio \lambda, with a lower limit (based on 2\sigma agreement with the measured z=4 correlation length) \epsilon> 0.7\lambda/(1+0.7\lambda), implying \epsilon > 0.17 for \lambda > 0.25. Successful models predict high duty cycles, P_0~0.2, 0.5, and 0.9 at z=3.1, 4.5 and 6, respectively, and they require that the fraction of halo baryons locked in the central black hole is much larger than the locally observed value. The rapid drop in the abundance of the massive and rare host halos at z>7 implies a proportionally rapid decline in the number density of luminous quasars, much stronger than simple extrapolations of the z=3-6 luminosity function would predict. The idea of the global gravitational effect as the source of cosmological redshift was considered by de Sitter (1916, 1917), Eddington (1923), Tolman (1929) and Bondi (1947). Also Hubble (1929) called the discovered distance-redshift relation as "De Sitter effect". For homogeneous matter distribution cosmological gravitational redshift is proportional to square of distance: z_grav ~ r^2. However for a fractal matter distribution having the fractal dimension D=2 the global gravitational redshift is the linear function of distance: z_grav ~ r, which gives possibility for interpretation of the Hubble law without the space expansion. Here the field gravity fractal cosmological model (FGF) is presented, which based on two initial principles. The first assumption is that the Feynman's field gravity approach describes the gravitational interaction, which delivers a natural basis for the conceptual unity of all fundamental physical interactions within the framework of the relativistic and quantum fields in Minkowski space. The second hypothesis is that the spatial distribution of gravitating matter is a fractal at all scales up to the Hubble radius. The fractal dimension of matter distribution is assumed to be D = 2, which implies that the global gravitational redshift is the explanation of the observed linear Hubble law. We have analysed a large data set of OVI absorber candidates found in the spectra of 3702 SDSS quasars, focusing on a subsample of 387 AGN sightlines with an average S/N>5.0, allowing for detection of absorbers above rest-frame equivalents widths W_r>0.19 A for the OVI 1032 A component. Accounting for random interlopers mimicking an OVI doublet, we derive for the first time a secure lower limit for the redshift number density $\Delta N / \Delta z$ for redshifts z_abs>2.8. With extensive Monte Carlo simulations we quantify the losses of absorbers due to blending with the ubiquitous Lyman forest lines, and estimate the success rate of retrieving each individual candidate as a function of its redshift, the emission redshift of the quasar, the strength of the absorber and the measured S/N of the spectrum by modelling typical Ly forest spectra. These correction factors allow us to derive the 'incompleteness and S/N corrected' redshift number densities of OVI absorbers :$\Delta N _{OVI, c} / \Delta z_{c} (2.8 < z < 3.2) = 4.6+-0.3, at 3.2 < z < 3.6 = 6.7+-0.8,and at 3.6 < z < 4.0 = 8.4+-2.9. We can place a secure lower limit for the contribution of OVI to the closure mass density at the redshifts probed here: $\Omega _{OVI} (2.8 < z < 3.2) >1.9x10^{-8} h^-1. We show that the strong lines we probe account for over 65\% of the mass in the OVI absorbers; the weak absorbers, while dominant in line number density, do not contribute significantly to the mass density. Making a conservative assumption about the ionisation fraction, and adopting the Anders (1989) solar abundance values, we derive the mean metallicty of the gas probed in our search : $\zeta (2.8 < z < 3.2) > 3.6 x 10^-4 h, in good agreement with other studies. The possibility to constrain fractal space dimensionality from Astrophysics and other areas is briefly reviewed. Assuming such dimensionality to be $3 + \epsilon$, a limit to $\epsilon$ can be inferred from COBE satellite data. The available data for the cosmic microwave background radiation spectrum are fitted by a Planck's radiation distribution generalized to non integer space dimensionality. Our analysis shows that the shape of the CMBR spectrum, which does not depend on the absolute normalization, is correctly described from this distribution provided the absolute temperature is equal to 2.726 $\pm$ $0.003\times 10^{-2}$ K and $\epsilon = - (0.957 \pm 0.006) \times 10^{-5}$. This value for $\epsilon$ is shown to be consistent with what is found on a very different spatial scale based on a quantum field phenomenon. The $|\epsilon|$ is interpreted as an upper limit for how much space dimensionality could have deviated from three. The hierarchical clustering inherent in Lambda-CDM cosmology seems to produce many of the observed characteristics of large-scale structure. But some glaring problems still remain, including the over-prediction (by a factor 10) of the number of dwarf galaxies within the virialized population of the local group. Several secondary effects have already been proposed to resolve this problem. It is still not clear, however, whether the principal solution rests with astrophysical processes, such as early feedback from supernovae, or possibly with as yet undetermined properties of the dark matter itself. In this paper, we carry out a detailed calculation of the dwarf halo evolution incorporating the effects of a hypothesized dark-matter decay, D -> D'+l, where D is the unstable particle, D' is the more massive daughter particle and l is the other, lighter (or possibly massless) daughter particle. This process preferentially heats the smaller haloes, expanding them during their evolution and reducing their present-day circular velocity. We find that this mechanism can account very well for the factor 4 deficit in the observed number of systems with velocity 10--20 km/s compared to those predicted by the numerical simulations, if dm/m_D' ~ 5-7 x 10^{-5}, where dm is the mass difference between the initial and final states. The peculiar velocity of the Local Group of galaxies manifested in the Cosmic Microwave Background dipole is found to decompose into three dominant components. The three components are clearly separated because they arise on distinct spatial scales and are fortuitously almost orthogonal in their influences. The nearest, which is distinguished by a velocity discontinuity at ~7 Mpc, arises from the evacuation of the Local Void. We lie in the Local Sheet that bounds the void. Random motions within the Local Sheet are small. Our Galaxy participates in the bulk motion of the Local Sheet away from the Local Void. The component of our motion on an intermediate scale is attributed to the Virgo Cluster and its surroundings, 17 Mpc away. The third and largest component is an attraction on scales larger than 3000 km/s and centered near the direction of the Centaurus Cluster. The amplitudes of the three components are 259, 185, and 455 km/s, respectively, adding collectively to 631 km/s in the reference frame of the Local Sheet. Taking the nearby influences into account causes the residual attributed to large scales to align with observed concentrations of distant galaxies and reduces somewhat the amplitude of motion attributed to their pull. On small scales, in addition to the motion of our Local Sheet away from the Local Void, the nearest adjacent filament, the Leo Spur, is seen to be moving in a direction that will lead to convergence with our filament. Finally, a good distance to an isolated galaxy within the Local Void reveals that this dwarf system has a motion of at least 230 km/s away from the void center. Given the velocities expected from gravitational instability theory in the standard cosmological paradigm, the distance to the center of the Local Void must be at least 23 Mpc from our position. This paper presents MoLUSC, a new method for generating mock galaxy catalogs from a large scale ($\approx 1000^3$ Mpc$^3$) dark matter simulation, that requires only modest CPU time and memory allocation. The method uses a small-scale ($\approx 256^3$ Mpc$^3$) dark matter simulation on which the \galics semi-analytic code has been run in order to define the transformation from dark matter density to galaxy density transformation using a probabilistic treatment. MoLUSC is then applied to a large-scale dark matter simulation in order to produce a realistic distribution of galaxies and their associated spectra. This permits the fast generation of large-scale mock surveys using relatively low-resolution simulations. One way to access the aggregated power of a collection of heterogeneous machines is to use a grid middleware, such as DIET, GridSolve or NINF. It addresses the problem of monitoring the resources, of handling the submissions of jobs and as an example the inherent transfer of input and output data, in place of the user. In this paper we present how to run cosmological simulations using the RAMSES application along with the DIET middleware. We will describe how to write the corresponding DIET client and server. The remainder of the paper is organized as follows: Section 2 presents the DIET middleware. Section 3 describes the RAMSES cosmological software and simulations, and how to interface it with DIET. We show how to write a client and a server in Section 4. Finally, Section 5 presents the experiments realized on Grid'5000, the French Research Grid, and we conclude in Section 6., Comment: submitted Nov 2006

We study the cosmological constraints on active-sterile neutrino oscillations nu_e <-> nu_s for the case when nu_s is partially filled initially, i.e. 0 < delta N_s < 1. We provide numerical analysis of the cosmological production of He-4, in the presence of nu_e <-> nu_s oscillations, effective after neutrino decoupling, accounting for all known oscillations effects on cosmological nucleosynthesis. Cosmological constraints on oscillation parameters corresponding to higher than 5% He-4 overproduction and different non-zero initial populations of the sterile state delta N_s < 1 are calculated. These generalized cosmological constraints corresponding to delta N_s > 0 are relaxed in comparison with the delta N_s = 0 case and the relaxation is proportional to delta N_s.

We present distance measurements to 71 high redshift type Ia supernovae discovered during the first year of the 5-year Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS). These events were detected and their multi-color light-curves measured using the MegaPrime/MegaCam instrument at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), by repeatedly imaging four one-square degree fields in four bands. Follow-up spectroscopy was performed at the VLT, Gemini and Keck telescopes to confirm the nature of the supernovae and to measure their redshift. With this data set, we have built a Hubble diagram extending to z=1, with all distance measurements involving at least two bands. Systematic uncertainties are evaluated making use of the multi-band photometry obtained at CFHT. Cosmological fits to this first year SNLS Hubble diagram give the following results : Omega_M = 0.263 +/- 0.042(stat) +/- 0.032(sys) for a flat LambdaCDM model; and w = -1.023 +/- 0.090(stat) +/- 0.054(sys) for a flat cosmology with constant equation of state w when combined with the constraint from the recent Sloan Digital Sky Survey measurement of baryon acoustic oscillations., Comment: (The SNLS Collaboration) 24 pages, 13 figures, Accepted in A&A. We present predictions for the abundance of Ly-$\alpha$ emitters in hierarchical structure formation models. We use the {\tt GALFORM} semi-analytical model to explore the impact on the predicted counts of varying assumptions about the escape fraction of Ly-$\alpha$ photons, the redshift at which the universe reionised and the cosmological density parameter. A model with a fixed escape fraction gives a remarkably good match to the observed counts over a wide redshift interval. In order to investigate the properties of large-scale structures of galaxies in the universe, we present an analysis of their spatial distribution at z$<$0.033. We used the LEDA extragalactic database containing over 1 million of galaxies covering the all-sky and the SDSS data included in the public release DR1, yielding to a sample of around 134,000 galaxies having a measured redshift in two survey areas representing 690 sq. degrees. The results of the study are 2D, 3D maps and magnitude number counts of galaxies, drawn from B-band samples. We present in this paper an exhaustive compilation of all published data of extragalactic Cepheids. We have checked every light curve in order to characterize the different types of Cepheid and detect potential overtone pulsators, or to estimate the quality of the data. This paper presents the first I-band photometric catalog of the brightest galaxies extracted from the Deep Near Infrared Survey of the Southern Sky (DENIS) An automatic galaxy recognition program has been developed to build this provisional catalog. The method is based on a discriminating analysis. The most discriminant parameter to separate galaxies from stars is proved to be the peak intensity of an object divided by its array. Its efficiency is better than 99%. The nominal accuracy for galaxy coordinates calculated with the Guide Star Catalog is about 6 arcseconds. The cross-identification with galaxies available in the Lyon-Meudon Extragalactic DAtabase (LEDA) allows a calibraton of the I-band photometry with the sample of Mathewson et Al. Thus, the catalog contains total I-band magnitude, isophotal diameter, axis ratio, position angle and a rough estimate of the morphological type code for 20260 galaxies. The internal completeness of this catalog reaches magnitude $I_{lim}=14.5$, with a photometric accuracy of $\sim 0.18m$. 25% of the Southern sky has been processed in this study. In this paper we present a data analysis regarding globular clusters as possible extragalactic distance indicators. For this purpose, we collected all velocity dispersion measurements published for galactic and M31 globular clusters. The slope and the zero-point of the Faber-Jackson relation were calibrated using Hipparcos distance measurements, and the relation was applied to extragalactic globular clusters in M31. A distance modulus of 24.12 \pm 0.45 mag was found. This is coherent with what is found by fitting the red giant branches of globular clusters (24.47 \pm 0.07, Holland 98), and is found from the peak of globular clusters luminosity function (24.03 \pm 0.23, Ostriker an d Gnedin 97), but shorter than the 24.7 \pm 0.2 mag (Lanoix et al. 98) and 24.77 \pm 0.11 mag (Feast and Catchpole 97), obtained by using Hipparcos data to calibrate the Cepheid period-luminosity. After numerical simulations by E. Praton, we interprete the cocoon-like structure observed for the distribution of galaxies around us as an effect of infall velocities onto clusters.
