Search

Electrical readout of magnetic states is a key to realize novel spintronics devices for efficient computing and data storage. Unidirectional magnetoresistance (UMR) in bilayer systems, consisting of a spin source material and a magnetic layer, refers to a change in the longitudinal resistance upon the reversal of magnetization, which typically originates from the interaction of spin-current and magnetization at the interface. Because of UMR s linear dependence on applied charge current and magnetization, it can be used to electrically read the magnetization state. However, in conventional spin source materials, the spin polarization of an electric field induced spin current is restricted to be in the film plane and hence the ensuing UMR can only respond to the in plane component of the magnetization. On the other hand, magnets with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) are highly desired for magnetic memory and spin-logic devices, while the electrical read out of PMA magnets through UMR is critically missing. Here, we report the discovery of an unconventional UMR in bilayer heterostructures of a topological semimetal (WTe2) and a PMA ferromagnetic insulator (Cr2Ge2Te6, CGT), which allows to electrically read the up and down magnetic states of the CGT layer by measuring the longitudinal resistance. Our theoretical calculations based on a tight binding model show that the unconventional UMR originates from the interplay of crystal symmetry breaking in WTe2 and magnetic exchange interaction across the WTe2 and CGT interface. Combining with the ability of WTe2 to obtain magnetic field free switching of the PMA magnets, our discoveries open an exciting pathway to achieve two terminal magnetic memory devices that operate solely on the spin orbit torque and UMR, which is critical for developing next-generation non volatile and low power consumption data storage technologies.

Current-driven magnetic skyrmions show promise as carriers of information bits in racetrack magnetic memory applications. Specifically, the utilization of skyrmions in synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) systems is highly attractive due to the potential to suppress the Skyrmion Hall effect, which causes a transverse displacement of driven skyrmions relative to the drift direction. In this study, we demonstrate, through analytical calculations and micromagnetic simulations, that in the case of a nanoring geometry, current-driven skyrmions achieve a stable circular motion with a constant frequency, which is a prerequisite for a skyrmion-based clock device. Notably, the operational frequency in a SAF nanoring surpasses that in a bilayer ferromagnetic-heavy metal nanoring and lies in the GHz regime for current densities of 20 MA/cm^2. We also find that the performance of skyrmions in SAF nanorings is comparable to that of radial Neel domain walls for low current densities (approximately 15 MA/cm^2) and low skyrmion densities (Nsk~6). Additionally, we introduce a novel skyrmionic three-phase AC alternator based on a SAF nanoring, which operates at frequencies in the GHz regime. We report a theoretical investigation of the ultrafast dynamics of electrons and phonons in strained monolayer WS$_2$ following photoexcitation. We show that strain substantially modifies the phase space for electron-phonon scattering, unlocking new relaxation pathways that are unavailable in the pristine monolayer. In particular, strain triggers a transition between distinct dynamical regimes of the non-equilibrium lattice dynamics characterized by the emission of chiral phonons under high strain and linearly-polarized phonons under low strain. For valley-polarized electronic excitations, this mechanism can be exploited to selectively activate the emission of chiral phonons -- phonons carrying a net angular momentum. Our simulations are based on state-of-the-art ab-initio methods and focus exclusively on realistic excitation and strain conditions that have already been achieved in recent experimental studies. Overall, strain emerges as a powerful tool for controlling chiral phonons emission and relaxation pathways in multivalley quantum materials.

The Seebeck effect consists in the induction of a voltage drop due to the temperature difference in a conductor. In the middle of XIXth century, Lord Kelvin has proposed a relation between the Seebeck coefficient and the derivative of the chemical potential over temperature in the broken circuit regime. This relation appears to be nearly universal as it equally well applies to metals, semimetals and semiconductors. We show that it may fail, however, in graphene, due to the non-locality effects in the ballistic electronic transport regime. The correction to the Kelvin's formula emerges due to the coexistence of counter-propagating non-dissipative currents of cold and hot electrons. The external magnetic field normal to the graphene sample allows separating hot and cold currents in real space. The developed formalism may help interpreting the recent experimental data on ballistic edge currents in graphene bi-layers in the quantum Hall regime [1]., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. Qubits require a compromise between operation speed and coherence. Here, we demonstrate a compromise-free singlet-triplet (ST) qubit, where the qubit couples maximally to the driving field while simultaneously coupling minimally to the dominant noise sources. The qubit is implemented in a crystal-phase defined double-quantum dot in an InAs nanowire. Using a superconducting resonator, we measure the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) gap, the spin-photon coupling strength and the qubit decoherence rate as a function of the in-plane magnetic-field orientation. We demonstrate a spin qubit sweet spot maximizing the dipolar coupling and simultaneously minimizing the decoherence. Our theoretical description postulates phonons as the most likely dominant noise source. The compromise-free sweet spot originates from the SOI suggesting that it is not restricted to this material platform, but might find applications in any material with SOI. These findings pave the way for enhanced engineering of these nanomaterials for next-generation qubit technologies.

The growing market and massive use of Internet of Things nodes is placing unprecedented demands of energy efficient hardware for edge computing and microwave devices. In particular, magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs), as main building blocks of spintronic microwave technology, can offer a path for the development of compact and high-performance microwave detectors. On the other hand, the fascinating field of skyrmionics is bridging together concepts from topology and spintronics. Here, we show the proof of concept of a topological spin-torque diode realized with an MTJ on top of a skyrmionic material at room temperature and for a wide region of applied fields, including the zero-field case. Our spin torque diode electrical measurements show the electrical excitation of a skyrmion resonant mode with frequencies near 4 GHz and a selectivity one order of magnitude smaller than the uniform modes excited in the same device. Micromagnetic simulations identify these dynamics with the excitation of the breathing mode and point out the role of thickness dependent magnetic parameters (magnetic anisotropy field and Dzyaloshinkii Moriya interaction) in both stabilizing and exciting the magnetic skyrmions. This work marks a milestone for the development of topological spin-torque diodes.

Rare-earth iron garnets have distinctive spin-wave (SW) properties such as low magnetic damping and long SW coherence length making them ideal candidates for magnonics. Among them, thulium iron garnet (TmIG) is a ferrimagnetic insulator with unique magnetic properties including perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and topological hall effect at room temperature when grown down to a few nanometers, extending its application to magnon spintronics. Here, the SW propagation properties of TmIG films (thickness of 7 - 34 nm) grown on GGG and sGGG substrates are studied at room temperature. Magnetic measurements show in-plane magnetic anisotropy for TmIG films grown on GGG and out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy for films grown on sGGG substrates with PMA. SW electrical transmission spectroscopy measurements on TmIG /GGG films unveil magnetostatic surface spin waves (MSSWs) propagating up to 80 um with a SW group velocity of 3 - 8 km/s. Intriguingly, these MSSWs exhibit nonreciprocal propagation, opening new applications in SW functional devices. TmIG films grown on sGGG substrates exhibit forward volume spin waves with a reciprocal propagation behavior up to 32 um.

Electrochemical techniques conventionally lack spatial resolution and average local information over an entire electrode. While advancements in spatial resolution have been made through scanning probe methods, monitoring dynamics over large areas is still challenging, and it would be beneficial to be able to decouple the probe from the electrode itself. In this work, we leverage single molecule microscopy to spatiotemporally monitor analyte surface concentrations over a wide area using unmodified hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) in organic solvents. Through a sensing scheme based on redox-active species interactions with fluorescent emitters at the surface of hBN, we observe a linear decrease in the number of emitters under positive voltages applied to a nearby electrode. We find consistent trends in electrode reaction kinetics vs overpotentials between potentiostat-reported currents and optically-read emitter dynamics, showing Tafel slopes greater than 290 mV per decade. Finally, we draw on the capabilities of spectral single molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) to monitor the fluorescent species identity, enabling multiplexed readout. Overall, we show dynamic measurements of analyte concentration gradients at a micrometer-length scale with nanometer-scale depth and precision. On the quest to understand and reduce environmental noise in Si spin qubits, hyperfine interactions between electron and nuclear spins impose a major challenge. Silicon is a promising host material because one can enhance the spin coherence time by removing spinful $^{29}$Si isotopes. As more experiments rely on isotopic purification of Si, the role of other spinful atoms in the device should be clarified. This is not a straightforward task, as the hyperfine interactions with atoms in the barrier layers are poorly understood. We utilize density functional theory to determine the hyperfine tensors of both Si and Ge in a crystalline epitaxial Si/SiGe quantum well as well as Si and O atoms in an amorphous Si/SiO$_2$ (MOS) interface structure. Based on these results, we estimate the dephasing time $T_2^*$ due to magnetic noise from the spin bath and show that the coherence is limited by interactions with non-Si barrier atoms to a few \textmu s in Si/SiGe (for non-purified Ge) and about 100\,\textmu s in Si-MOS. Expressing these numbers alternatively, in Si/SiGe the interactions with Ge dominate below 1000\,ppm of $^{29}$Si content, and, due to low natural concentration of the spinful oxygen isotopes, the interactions with oxygen in Si-MOS become significant only below 1\,ppm of $^{29}$Si content., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

We study the Josephson effect in a superconductor/altermagnet/superconductor (S/AM/S) junction. We find anomalous phenomena including $0$-$\pi$ transition as well as multi-nodal current-phase relations. Similar to $d$-wave superconductor, $d$-wave altermagnet can support $\varphi$ junction where free energy minima locate neither $\varphi=0$ nor $\pm \pi$ with double degeneracy. These properties can be tunable by parameters e.g., the exchange energy, the orientation of crystal axis, the length, and the applied gate voltage of altermagnet. Magnetic skyrmions have garnered attention for their potential roles in spintronic applications, such as information carriers in computation, data storage, and nano-oscillators due to their small size, topological stability, and the requirement of small electric currents to manipulate them. Two key challenges in harnessing skyrmions are the stabilization requirement through a strong out-of-plane field, and the skyrmion Hall effect (SkHE). Here, we present a systematic model study of skyrmions in FM/AFM multi-layer structures by employing both atomistic Monte Carlo and atomistic spin dynamics simulations. We demonstrate that skyrmions stabilized by exchange bias have superior stability than field-stabilized skyrmions due to the formation of a magnetic imprint within the AFM layer. Additionally, stacking two skyrmion hosting FM layers between two antiferromagnetic (AFM) layers suppresses the SkHE and enables the transport of AFM-coupled skyrmions with high velocity in the order of a few Km/s. This proposed multi-layer configuration could serve as a pathway to overcome existing limitations in the development of skyrmion-based devices, and the insights obtained through this study contribute significantly to the broader understanding of topological spin textures in magnetic materials.

We theoretically investigate nonequilibrium spin fluctuations in a ferromagnet induced by a light pulse. Using a Lindblad equation consistent with the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, we compute the autocorrelation function of magnetization. Our analysis reveals that this function comprises both thermal and nonequilibrium components. To examine the latter in detail, we introduce a Fano factor similar to nonequilibrium current noise in electronic circuits. We demonstrate that this factor encapsulates insights into the transfer of spin units to the environment. Magnetic quantum oscillations (MQO) are traditionally applied to investigate the electronic structure of metals. In layered quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) materials the MQO have several qualitative features giving additional useful information, provided their theoretical description is developed. Within the framework of the Kubo formula and the self-consistent Born approximation, we reconsider the phase of beats in the amplitude of Shubnikov oscillations of interlayer conductivity in Q2D metals. We show that the phase shift of beats of the Shubnikov (conductivity) oscillations relative to the de Haas - van Alphen (magnetization) oscillations is larger than expected previously and, under certain conditions, can reach the value of $\pi/2$, as observed experimentally. We explain the phase inversion of MQO during the 3D - 2D crossover and predict the decrease of relative MQO amplitude of interlayer magnetoresistance in a strong magnetic field, larger than the beat frequency., Comment: 13 pages

Moir\'e superlattices formed in stacks of two or more 2D crystals with similar lattice structures have recently become excellent platforms to reveal new physics in low-dimensional systems. They are, however, highly sensitive to the angle and lattice constant differences between the associated crystals, limiting the range of the material choice and the possible moir\'e patterns for a given 2D crystal. Here, we present a novel approach to realize an atomically flat substrate with a periodic moir\'e pattern that can induce the moir\'e potential on the material on top by van der Waals (vdW) interactions, without suffering from the lattice and angle mismatch. By constructing a twisted hBN (thBN) moir\'e substrate at an angle of about 1$^\circ$, we show that the graphene on top, aligned around 15$^\circ$ with the neighboring hBN layers, exhibits typical transport properties under a hexagonal moir\'e potential, including multiple satellite Dirac points (DPs), Hofstadter butterfly effect, and Brown-Zak oscillations. All features point to the existence of the moir\'e potential in graphene formed by thBN with $\sim$1$^\circ$ twist angle. Further statistical study shows that the twist from a parallel interface between the hBN layers is critical to induce the moir\'e potential. Our study demonstrates that the thBN moir\'e substrate can be used to investigate moir\'e physics in arbitrary materials without being constrained by their lattice constants., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

We propose an electronic L\'evy glass built from graphene nanoribbons in the presence of regions with enhanced spin-orbit coupling. Although electrons in graphene nanoribbons present a low spin-orbit coupling strength, it can be increased by a proximity effect with an appropriate substrate. We consider graphene nanoribbons with different edge types, which contain circular regions with a tunable Rashba spin-orbit coupling, whose diameter follow a power-law distribution. We find that spin-orbital clusters induce a transition from superdiffusive to diffusive charge transport, similar to what we recently reported for nanoribbons with electrostatic clusters [Phys. Rev. B. 107, 155432 (2023)]. We also investigate spin polarization in the spin-orbital L\'evy glasses, and show that a finite spin polarization can be found only in the superdiffusive regime. In contrast, the spin polarization vanishes in the diffusive regime, making the electronic L\'evy glass a useful device whose electronic transmission and spin polarization can be controlled by its Fermi energy. Finally, we apply a multifractal analysis to charge transmission and spin polarization, and find that the transmission time series in the superdiffusive regime are multifractal, while they tend to be monofractal in the diffusive regime. In contrast, spin polarization time series are multifractal in both regimes, characterizing a marked difference between mesoscopic fluctuations of charge transport and spin polarization in the proposed electronic L\'evy glass.

In this work, we theoretically study a modified Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model in which each unit cell consists of three sites. Unlike existing extensions of the SSH model which are made by enlarging the periodicity of the (nearest-neighbor) hopping amplitudes, our modification is obtained by replacing the Pauli matrices in the system's Hamiltonian by their higher dimensional counterparts. This in turn leads to the presence of next-nearest neighbor hopping terms and the emergence of different symmetries than those of other extended SSH models. Moreover, the system supports a number of edge states that are protected by the time-reversal symmetry rather than the usual chiral symmetry. The linewidth of antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) is found to be significantly broader than that of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), even when the intrinsic Gilbert damping parameter is the same for both systems. We investigate the origin of this enhanced damping rate in AFMR by studying a bipartite magnet model. Through analytical calculations and numerical simulations, we present three perspectives on understanding this linewidth broadening in AFMR: i) The non-dissipative Heisenberg exchange interaction develops a damping-like component in the presence of Gilbert damping, ii) The transverse component of the exchange coupling reduces the AFMR frequency, thereby increasing the damping rate, and iii) The antiferromagnetic eigenmode exhibits characteristics of a two-mode squeezed state, which is inherently linked to an enhanced damping rate. Our findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics governing magnetic dissipation in antiferromagnet and offer insights into the experimentally observed broadened linewidths in AFMR spectra., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Non-Hermiticity leads to distinctive topological phenomena absent in Hermitian systems. However, connection between such intrinsic non-Hermitian topology and Hermitian topology has remained largely elusive. Here, considering the bulk and boundary as an environment and system, we demonstrate that anomalous boundary states in Hermitian topological insulators exhibit non-Hermitian topology. We study the self-energy capturing the particle exchange between the bulk and boundary, and demonstrate that it detects Hermitian topology in the bulk and induces non-Hermitian topology at the boundary. As an illustrative example, we show the non-Hermitian topology and concomitant skin effect inherently embedded within chiral edge states of Chern insulators. We also find the emergence of hinge states within effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians at surfaces of three-dimensional topological insulators. Furthermore, we comprehensively classify our correspondence across all the tenfold symmetry classes of topological insulators and superconductors. Our work uncovers a hidden connection between Hermitian and non-Hermitian topology, and provides an approach to identifying non-Hermitian topology in quantum matter., Comment: 8+10 pages, 5+1 figures

In recent years, exciton-polariton microcavity arrays have emerged as a promising semiconductor-based platform for analogue simulations of model Hamiltonians and topological effects. To realize experimentally a variety of Hamiltonians and change their parameters, it is essential to have highly tunable and easily engineerable structures. Here, we demonstrate in-situ tunable, room-temperature polariton condensation in individual states of a one-dimensional topological lattice, by utilizing an open-cavity configuration with an organic polymer layer. Angle-resolved photoluminescence measurements reveal the band structure of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain, comprised of S-like and P-like bands, along with the appearance of discrete topological edge states with distinct symmetries. Changing the cavity length in combination with vibron-mediated relaxation in the polymer allows us to achieve selective polariton condensation into different states of the band structure, unveiled by nonlinear emission, linewidth narrowing, energy blue-shift and extended macroscopic coherence. Furthermore, we engineer the bandgap and the edge state localization by adjusting the interaction between adjacent lattice sites. Comparison to first-principles calculations showcases the precision of the polariton simulator. These results demonstrate the versatility and accuracy of the platform for the investigation of quantum fluids in complex potential landscapes and topological effects at room temperature.

We present a quantum theory for phonon magnetic moment in doped Dirac semimetals. Our theory is based on an emergent gauge field approach to the electron-phonon coupling, applicable for both gapless and gapped systems. We find that the magnetic moment is directly proportional to the electrical Hall conductivity through the phonon Hall viscosity. Our theory is combined with the first-principles calculations, allowing us to quantitatively implement it to realistic materials. Magnetic moments are found to be on the order of Bohr magneton for certain phonon modes in graphene and $\text{Cd}_3 \text{As}_2$. We adapt the fluid description of Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) states, as seen in (arXiv:2203.06516), to model a system of interacting two-component bosons. This system represents the simplest physical realization of an interacting bosonic Symmetry-Protected Topological (SPT) phase, also known as the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) of bosons. In particular, we demonstrate how the fluid dynamical boundary conditions of no-penetration and no-stress at a hard wall naturally give rise to the two counter-propagating boundary modes expected in these SPT phases. Moreover, we identify energy-conserving hydro boundary conditions that can either create a gap in these edge modes or completely isolate the edge states from the bulk, as described in (Physical Review X 14, 011057 (2024)), where they are termed fragile surface states. These fragile surface states are typically absent in K-matrix edge theories and require bulk dynamics to manifest. By leveraging insights from hydrodynamical boundary dynamics, we can further elucidate the intricate surface properties of SPTs beyond the usual topological quantum field theory based approaches., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

In the absence of time reversal symmetry, orbital magnetization provides a sensitive probe of topology and interactions, with particularly rich phenomenology in Chern insulators where topological edge states carry large equilibrium currents. Here, we use a nanoscale superconducting sensor to map the magnetic fringe fields in twisted bilayers of MoTe$_2$, where transport and optical sensing experiments have revealed the formation of fractional Chern insulator (FCI) states at zero magnetic field. At a temperature of 1.6K, we observe oscillations in the local magnetic field associated with fillings $\nu=-1,-2/3,-3/5,-4/7$ and $-5/9$ of the first moir\'e hole band, consistent with the formation of FCIs at these fillings. By quantitatively reconstructing the magnetization, we determine the local thermodynamic gaps of the most robust FCI state at $\nu=-2/3$, finding $^{-2/3}\Delta$ as large as 7 meV. Spatial mapping of the charge density- and displacement field-tuned magnetic phase diagram further allows us to characterize sample disorder, which we find to be dominated by both inhomogeneity in the effective unit cell area as well as inhomogeneity in the band edge offset and bound dipole moment. Our results highlight both the challenges posed by structural disorder in the study of twisted homobilayer moir\'e systems and the opportunities afforded by the remarkably robust nature of the underlying correlated topological states.

We explore quantum criticality and Kibble-Zurek scaling (KZS) in the Aubry-Andre-Stark (AAS) model, where the Stark field of strength $\varepsilon$ is added onto the one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattice. We perform scaling analysis and numerical calculations of the localization length, inverse participation ratio (IPR), and energy gap between the ground and first excited states to characterize critical properties of the delocalization-localization transition. Remarkably, our scaling analysis shows that, near the critical point, the localization length $\xi$ scales with $\varepsilon$ as $\xi\propto\varepsilon^{-\nu}$ with $\nu\approx0.3$ a new critical exponent for the AAS model, which is different from the counterparts for both the pure Aubry-Andre (AA) model and Stark model. The IPR $\mathcal{I}$ scales as $\mathcal{I}\propto\varepsilon^{s}$ with the critical exponent $s\approx0.098$, which is also different from both two pure models. The energy gap $\Delta E$ scales as $\Delta E\propto \varepsilon^{\nu z}$ with the same critical exponent $z\approx2.374$ as that for the pure AA model. We further reveal hybrid scaling functions in the overlap between the critical regions of the Anderson and Stark localizations. Moreover, we investigate the driven dynamics of the localization transitions in the AAS model. By linearly changing the Stark (quasiperiodic) potential, we calculate the evolution of the localization length and the IPR, and study their dependence on the driving rate. We find that the driven dynamics from the ground state is well described by the KZS with the critical exponents obtained from the static scaling analysis. When both the Stark and quasiperiodic potentials are relevant, the KZS form includes the two scaling variables. We develop a Dirac fermion theory for topological phases in magnetic topological insulator films. The theory is based on exact solutions of the energies and the wave functions for an effective model of the three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) film. It is found that the TI film consists of a pair of massless or massive Dirac fermions for the surface states, and a series of massive Dirac fermions for the bulk states. The massive Dirac fermion always carries zero or integer quantum Hall conductance when the valence band is fully occupied while the massless Dirac fermion carries a one-half quantum Hall conductance when the chemical potential is located around the Dirac point for a finite range. The magnetic exchange interaction in the magnetic layers in the film can be used to manipulate either the masses or chirality of the Dirac fermions and gives rise to distinct topological phases, which cover the known topological insulating phases, such as quantum anomalous Hall effect, quantum spin Hall effect and axion effect, and also the novel topological metallic phases, such as half quantized Hall effect, half quantum mirror Hall effect, and metallic quantum anomalous Hall effect.

Electron transport in suspended and non-suspended GaAs point contacts (PCs) of different widths is experimentally studied. The superballistic contribution to the conductance, that demonstrates a distinctive quadratic dependence on the PC width and temperature growth, is extracted from the experiment. The studied PCs are shown to be described in the framework of hydrodynamic electron flow a in wide temperature range. At low temperatures, $T$, the viscosity is found out to obey the law $1/T^2$ expected for 2D systems, while at higher temperatures it has the dependence $1/T$. Magnetic hopfions are localized magnetic solitons with non-zero 3D topological charge (Hopf index). Here I present an analytical calculation of the toroidal magnetic hopfion vector potential, emergent magnetic field, the Hopf index, and the magnetization configuration. The calculation method is based on the concept of the spinor representation of the Hopf mapping. The hopfions with arbitrary values of the azimuthal and poloidal vorticities are considered. The special role of the toroidal coordinates and their connection with the emergent vector po tential gauge are demonstrated. The hopfion magnetization field is found explicitly for the arbitrary Hopf indices. It is shown that the Hopf charge density can be represented as a Jacobian of the transformation from the toroidal to the cylindrical coordinates., Comment: 1 figure, 5 pages

Strain engineering has played a key role in modern silicon electronics, having been introduced as a mobility booster in the 1990s and commercialized in the early 2000s. Achieving similar advances with two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors in a CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) compatible manner would radically improve the industrial viability of 2D transistors. Here, we show silicon nitride capping layers can impart strain to monolayer MoS2 transistors on conventional silicon substrates, enhancing their electrical performance with a low thermal budget (350 {\deg}C), CMOS-compatible approach. Strained back-gated and dual-gated MoS2 transistors demonstrate median increases up to 60% and 45% in on-state current, respectively. The greatest improvements are found when both transistor channels and contacts are reduced to ~200 nm, reaching saturation currents of 488 uA/um, higher than any previous reports at such short contact pitch. Simulations reveal that most benefits arise from tensile strain lowering the contact Schottky barriers, and that further reducing device dimensions (including contacts) will continue to offer increased strain and performance improvements.

Two-photon interference (TPI) lies at the heart of photonic quantum technologies. TPI is generally regarded as quantum interference stemming from the indistinguishability of identical photons, hence a common intuition prevails that TPI would disappear if photons are distinguishable. Here we disprove this perspective and uncover the essence of TPI. We report the first demonstration of TPI between distinguishable photons with their frequency separation up to $10^4$ times larger than their linewidths. We perform time-resolved TPI between an independent laser and single photons with ultralong coherence time ($>10\ \mu$s). We observe a maximum TPI visibility of $72\%\pm 2\%$ well above the $50\%$ classical limit indicating the quantum feature, and simultaneously a broad visibility background and a classical beat visibility of less than $50\%$ reflecting the classical feature. These visibilities are independent of the photon frequency separation and show no difference between distinguishable and indistinguishable photons. Based on a general wave superposition model, we derive the cross-correlation functions which fully reproduce and explain the experiments. Our results reveal that TPI as the fourth-order interference arises from the second-order interference of two photons within the mutual coherence time and TPI is not linked to the photon indistinguishability. Rectification, the preferential transport of a current in one direction through a system, has garnered significant attention in molecules because of its importance for controlling thermal and electronic currents at the nanoscale. Here, we report the presence of energy storage rectification effects in a molecular chain. This phenomenon is generated by subjecting a harmonic molecular chain to an oscillating temperature gradient and showing that the energy absorption rate of the system depends on the direction of the gradient. We examine how the energy storage rectification ratios in the chain are affected by the oscillating gradient, asymmetry in the chain, and the system parameters. We find that energy storage rectification can be observed in harmonic lattice structures with time-dependent temperatures and that, correspondingly, anharmonicity is not required to generate this rectification mechanism in such systems.

We determine the optical properties of gated bilayer graphene quantum dots with trigonal warping (TW) of single-particle energy spectra. The lateral structure of metallic gates confines electrons and holes in a quantum dot (QD) electrostatically. The gated bilayer graphene energy spectrum is characterized by two K-valleys surrounded by three minivalleys with energies depending on the applied vertical electric field. Employing an atomistic tight-binding model, we compute the single-particle QD states and analyze the influence of TW on the energy spectrum as the lateral confining potential depth varies. We find a regime where the QD levels are dominated by the presence of three minivalleys around each K-valley. Next, we compute dipole matrix elements and analyze the oscillator strengths and optical selection rules for optical valence to conduction band transitions. We then include electron-electron interactions by first computing the microscopic Coulomb matrix elements, electron self-energy, and solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation to obtain the excitonic spectrum. Finally, we obtain the absorption spectrum for a shallow confining potential depth, which further amplifies the effects of TW on the optical properties. Our results predict the existence of two degenerate bright exciton states, each built of the three minivalley states that do not exist in the deep confinement regime, where the effects of TW are negligible., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We study thermoelectric and viscous contributions to the ratchet effect, i.e. radiation-induced generation of the direct electric current, $J_{\rm rat},$ in asymmetric dual-grating gate structure without inversion center. Previously [E.M\"onch et al, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 105}, 045404 (2022)], it was demonstrated that frequency dependence of the $J_{\rm rat}$ is essentially different within hydrodynamic (HD) and drift-diffusion (DD) regimes of the electron transport: $ J_{\rm rat}^{\rm HD} \propto 1/\omega^6 $ and $ J_{\rm rat}^{\rm DD} \propto 1/\omega^2 $ for $\omega \to \infty.$ Here we analyze previously neglected thermoelectric contribution and find that it yields high-frequency asymptotic $1/\omega^2$ even in the HD regime and can change sign of the response. Account of the finite viscosity of the electron liquid yields contribution which scales at high frequency as $1/\omega^4.$ We also find plasmonic resonances in the $J_{\rm rat},$ and demonstrate that asymmetry of the structure allows for excitation of the so-called directional travelling plasmons., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2111.09169

The detection of Landau-level-like energy structures near the chemical potential of an insulator is essential to the search for a class of correlated electronic matter hosting charge-neutral fermions and Fermi surfaces, a long-proposed concept that remains elusive experimentally. Here we introduce and demonstrate that the magneto-thermoelectric response of a quantum insulator can reveal critical information not available via other approaches. We report large quantum oscillations (QOs) in the Seebeck response of the hole-doped insulating state of monolayer tungsten ditelluride (WTe2) in magnetic fields. The QOs remarkably undergo sign-changes as the field is swept, mimicking those in metals with Landau quantization. The sign-change in the thermoelectric response directly implies the presence of a field-induced Landau-level-like structure at the chemical potential of the insulator. In strongly correlated quantum materials, electrons behave in ways that often extend beyond the confines of conventional Fermi-liquid theory. Interesting results include the observation of low-temperature metallic behavior in systems that are highly resistive. Here we provide an overview of experiments in which insulators exhibit characteristics of a metal such as the Shubnikov de Haas like quantum oscillations, focusing on recent findings in the correlated insulating states of two-dimensional WTe2. Topologically protected magnetic skyrmions in magnetic materials are stabilized by interfacial or bulk Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Interfacial DMI decays with increase of the magnetic layer thickness in just a few nanometers and bulk DMI only stabilizes magnetic skyrmions at low temperatures. Consequently, more flexibility in manipulation of DMI is required for utilizing nanoscale skyrmions in energy efficient memory and logic devices at room temperature (RT). Here, we demonstrate the observation of RT skyrmions stabilized by gradient DMI (g-DMI) in composition gradient engineered CoPt single layer films by employing topological Hall effect, magnetic force microscopy, and nitrogen vacancy scanning magnetometry. Skyrmions remain stable at a wide range of applied magnetic fields and are confirmed to be Bloch-type from micromagnetic simulation and analytical magnetization reconstruction. Furthermore, we observe skyrmion pairs which may be explained by skyrmion-antiskyrmion interactions. Our findings expand the family of magnetic materials hosting RT magnetic skyrmions by tuning g-DMI via gradient polarity and choice of magnetic elements.

In the presence of strong electronic interactions, a partially filled Chern band may stabilize a fractional Chern insulator (FCI) state, the zero-field analog of the fractional quantum Hall phase. While FCIs have long been hypothesized, feasible solid-state realizations only recently emerged, largely due to the rise of moir\'e materials. In these systems, the quantum geometry of the electronic bands plays a critical role in stabilizing the FCI in the presence of competing correlated phases. In the limit of ``ideal'' quantum geometry, where the quantum geometry is identical to that of Landau levels, this role is well understood. However, in more realistic scenarios only empiric numerical evidence exists, accentuating the need for a clear understanding of the mechanism by which the FCI deteriorates moving further away from these ideal conditions. We introduce and analyze an anisotropic model of a $\left|C \right|=1$ Chern insulator, whereupon partial filling of its bands, an FCI phase is stabilized over a certain parameter regime. We incorporate strong electronic interaction analytically by employing a coupled-wires approach, studying the FCI stability and its relation to the the quantum metric. We identify an unusual anti-FCI phase benefiting from non-ideal geometry, generically subdominant to the FCI. However, its presence hinders the formation of FCI in favor of other competitive phases at fractional fillings, such as the charge density wave. Though quite peculiar, this anti-FCI phase may have already been observed in experiments at high magnetic fields. This establish a direct link between quantum geometry and FCI stability in a tractable model far from any ideal band conditions, and illuminates a unique mechanism of FCI deterioration., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Extensive research has explored the optical properties of topological insulating materials, driven by their inherent stability and potential applications. In this study, we unveil a novel functionality of three-dimensional integer quantum Hall (3D IQH) states as broad-band filters for circularly polarized light, particularly effective in the terahertz (THz) frequency range under realistic system parameters. We also investigate the impact of practical imperfections, demonstrating the resilience of this filtering effect. Our findings reveal that this phenomenon is independent of the microscopic origin of the 3D IQH state, prompting discussions on its feasibility across diverse candidate materials. The geminate annihilation of two triplet excitons created by singlet exciton fission is affected by the dimensionality of transport as determined by typically anisotropic triplet exciton mobilities in organic molecular crystals. We analyze this process using a random-walk model where the time-dynamics of the geminate annihilation probability is determined by the average exciton hopping times along the crystallographic directions. The model is then applied to the geminate fluorescence dynamics in rubrene, where the main channel for triplet-triplet annihilation is via triplet fusion and subsequent photon emission, and we identify the transitions between transport in one, two, and three dimensions., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

In this work, we explore the strain and curvature effects on the electronic properties of a curved graphene structure, called the graphene wormhole. The electron dynamics is described by a massless Dirac fermion containing position--dependent Fermi velocity. In addition, the strain produces a pseudo--magnetic vector potential to the geometric coupling. For an isotropic strain tensor, the decoupled components of the spinor field exhibit a supersymmetric (SUSY) potential, depending on the centrifugal term and the external magnetic field only. In the absence of a external magnetic field, the strain yields to an exponential damped amplitude, whereas the curvature leads to a power--law damping of the wave function. The spin--curvature coupling breaks the chiral symmetry between the upper and the lower spinor component, which leads to the increasing of the wave function on either upper or lower region of the wormhole, i.e., depending on the spin number. By adding an uniform magnetic field, the effective potential exhibits an asymptotic quadratic profile and a spin--curvature barrier near the throat. As a result, the bound states (Landau levels) are confined around the wormhole throat showing an asymmetric and spin--dependent profile., Comment: 12 pages, two column, 21 figures

In scenarios coined Maxwell's demon, information on microscopic degrees of freedom is used to seemingly violate the second law of thermodynamics. This has been studied in the classical as well as the quantum domain. In this paper, we study an implementation of Maxwell's demon that can operate in both domains. In particular, we investigate information-to-work conversion over the quantum-to-classical transition. The demon continuously measures the charge state of a double quantum dot, and uses this information to guide electrons against a voltage bias by tuning the on-site energies of the dots. Coherent tunneling between the dots allows for the buildup of quantum coherence in the system. Under strong measurements, the coherence is suppressed, and the system is well-described by a classical model. As the measurement strength is further increased, the Zeno effect prohibits interdot tunneling. A Zeno-like effect is also observed for weak measurements, where measurement errors lead to fluctuations in the on-site energies, dephasing the system. We anticipate similar behaviors in other quantum systems under continuous measurement and feedback control, making our results relevant for implementations in quantum technology and quantum control.

Indium selenide, In2Se3, has recently attracted growing interest due to its novel properties, including room temperature ferroelectricity, outstanding photoresponsivity, and exotic in-plane ferroelectricity, which open up new regimes for next generation electronics. In2Se3 also provides the important advantage of tuning the electrical properties of ultra-thin layers with an external electrical and magnetic field, making it a potential platform to study novel two-dimensional physics. Yet, In2Se3 has many different polymorphs, and it has been challenging to synthesize single-phase material, especially using scalable growth methods, as needed for technological applications. In this paper, we use aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy to characterize the microstructure of twin-free single-phase ultra-thin layers of beta-In2Se3, prepared by a unique molecular beam epitaxy approach. We emphasize features of the In2Se3 layer and In2Se3/InP interface which provide evidence for understanding the growth mechanism of the single-phase In2Se3. This novel approach for forming high-quality twin-free single phase two-dimensional crystals on InP substrates is likely to be applicable to other technologically important substrates., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

Discovering alternative ways to drive domain wall (DW) dynamics is crucial for advancing spintronic applications. Here we demonstrate via atomistic spin dynamics simulations that optical torques can efficiently drive 90^{\circ} DWs in the Mn2Au antiferromagnet but their spatial symmetry forbids the motion of 180^{\circ} walls. In the steady-state regime, the kinematics display special relativity signatures accessed for low laser intensities. At velocities higher than the magnonic limit, the DW enters a proliferation regime in which part of its relativistic energy is invested into the nucleation of novel magnetic textures. Our investigation contributes towards the fundamental understanding of opto-magnetic effects, supporting the development of next generation, all-optically controlled antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Magnetic order typically emerges due to the short-range exchange interaction between the constituent electronic spins. Recent discoveries have found a crucial role for spin-phonon coupling in various phenomena from optical ultrafast magnetization switching to dynamical control of the magnetic state. Here, we demonstrate theoretically the emergence of a biquadratic long-range interaction between spins mediated by their coupling to phonons hybridized with vacuum photons into polaritons. The resulting ordered state enabled by the exchange of virtual polaritons between spins is reminiscent of superconductivity mediated by the exchange of virtual phonons. The biquadratic nature of the spin-spin interaction promotes ordering without favoring ferro- or antiferromagnetism. It further makes the phase transition to magnetic order a first-order transition, unlike in conventional magnets. Consequently, a large magnetization develops abruptly on lowering the temperature which \aknew{could} enable magnetic memories admitting ultralow-power thermally-assisted writing while maintaining a high data stability. The role of photons in the phenomenon further enables an in-situ static control over the magnetism. These unique features make our predicted spin-spin interaction and magnetism highly unconventional paving the way for novel scientific and technological opportunities.

Antiferromagnetic (AFM) skyrmions, which are resistant to both the skyrmion Hall effect and external magnetic perturbations, are expected to be promising candidates for next-generation spintronics devices. Despite being observed in bulk materials and synthetic AFM layered systems, the existence of intrinsic AFM skyrmions within single magnetic layers, which offer potential advantages for spintronic device fabrication, has remained elusive. In this work, taking monolayer CrSi(Te,Se)$_{3}$ as a representative system, we demonstrate the emergence of intrinsic AFM skyrmions in two-dimensional Janus magnets. It is found that under moderate compressive strain, the interplay between considerable Dyzaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the strain-induced AFM Heisenberg exchange interaction in monolayer CrSi(Te,Se)$_{3}$ would give rise to the emergence of intrinsic AFM skyrmions assembled from AFM spin spirals. Moreover, the application of an external magnetic field could trigger the emergence of AFM merons as well as a canted AFM state. Charge transfer is a fundamental interface process that can be harnessed for light detection, photovoltaics, and photosynthesis. Recently, charge transfer was exploited in nanophotonics to alter plasmon polaritons by involving additional non-polaritonic materials to activate the charge transfer. Yet, direct charge transfer between polaritonic materials hasn't been demonstrated. We report the direct charge transfer in pure polaritonic van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures of $\alpha$-MoO$_3$/graphene. We extracted the Fermi energy of 0.6 eV for graphene by infrared nano-imaging of charge transfer hyperbolic polaritons in the vdW heterostructure. This unusually high Fermi energy is attributed to the charge transfer between graphene and $\alpha$-MoO$_3$. Moreover, we have observed charge transfer hyperbolic polaritons in multiple energy-momentum dispersion branches with a wavelength elongation of up to 150%. With support from the DFT calculation, we find that the charge transfer between graphene and $\alpha$-MoO$_3$, absent in mechanically assembled vdW heterostructures, is attributed to the relatively pristine heterointerface preserved in the epitaxially grown vdW heterostructure. The direct charge transfer and charge transfer hyperbolic polaritons demonstrated in our work hold great promise for developing nano-optical circuits, computational devices, communication systems, and light and energy manipulation devices.

Berry curvature physics and quantum geometric effects have been instrumental in advancing topological condensed matter physics in recent decades. Although Landau level-based flat bands and conventional 3D solids have been pivotal in exploring rich topological phenomena, they are constrained by their limited ability to undergo dynamic tuning. In stark contrast, moir\'e systems have risen as a versatile platform for engineering bands and manipulating the distribution of Berry curvature in momentum space. These moir\'e systems not only harbor tunable topological bands, modifiable through a plethora of parameters, but also provide unprecedented access to large length scales and low energy scales. Furthermore, they offer unique opportunities stemming from the symmetry-breaking mechanisms and electron correlations associated with the underlying flat bands that are beyond the reach of conventional crystalline solids. A diverse array of tools, encompassing quantum electron transport in both linear and non-linear response regimes and optical excitation techniques, provide direct avenues for investigating Berry physics. This review navigates the evolving landscape of tunable moir\'e materials, highlighting recent experimental breakthroughs in the field of topological physics. In pulsed laser deposition, along conventional deposition on frontside of plasma-plume, target is getting coated on its surface too. For reproducibility, cleaning those residues is the most adopted approach. Herein, we investigate the target-side coated materials and employ them as a binder-free supercapacitor electrode. Ballistic aggregated target-side nanofoam is compact and contains higher sp2-carbon, higher nitrogen content with higher graphitic-N and lower oxygen content with lower COOH group than that of diffusive aggregated conventional nanofoams. They are highly hydrogenated graphite-like amorphous carbon and superhydrophilic. The symmetric microsupercapacitor delivers higher volumetric capacitance of 522 mF/cm3 at 100 mV/s and 104% retention after 10000 charge-discharge cycles over conventional nanofoam (215 mF/cm3 and 85% retention) with the areal capacitance of 134 {\mu}F/cm2 at 120 Hz and ultrafast frequency response. The Skyrmion Hall Effect (SkHE) observed in ferromagnetic (FM) and ferrimagnetic (FI) skyrmions traveling due to a spin-polarized current can be a problematic issue when it comes to technological applications. By investigating the properties of FI skyrmions in racetracks through computational simulations, we have described the nature of their movement based on the relative values of the exchange, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya, and anisotropy coupling constants. Beyond that, using a design strategy, a magnetic channel-like nano-device is proposed in which a spin-polarized current protocol is created to successfully control the channel on which the skyrmion will travel without the adverse SkHE. Non-adiabatic molecular phenomena, arising from the breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, govern the fate of virtually all photo-physical and photochemical processes and limit the quantum efficiency of molecules and other solid-state embedded quantum emitters. A simple and elegant description, the energy gap law, was derived five decades ago, predicting that the non-adiabatic coupling between the excited and ground potential landscapes lead to non-radiative decay with a quasi-exponential dependence on the energy gap. We revisit and extend this theory to account for crucial aspects such as vibrational relaxation, dephasing, and radiative loss. We find a closed analytical solution with general validity which indicates a direct proportionality of the non-radiative rate with the vibrational relaxation rate at low temperatures, and with the dephasing rate of the electronic transition at high temperatures. The interplay between nontrivial band topology and layered antiferromagnetism in MnBi2Te4 has opened up a new avenue for exploring topological phases of matter. Representative examples include the quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion insulator state observed in odd and even number layers of MnBi2Te4, when the top and bottom surfaces have parallel and antiparallel spin alignments respectively. The rich and complex spin dynamics associated with the van der Waals antiferromagnetic order is expected to generate novel topological phases and phase transitions that are unique to MnBi2Te4. Here we fabricate a device of 7-septuple-layer MnBi2Te4 covered with AlOx capping layer, which enables the investigation of antiferromagnetic quantum anomalous Hall effect over wide parameter spaces. By tuning the gate voltage and perpendicular magnetic field, we uncover a cascade of quantum phase transitions that can be attributed to the influence of spin configurations on charge transport. Furthermore, we find that an in-plane magnetic field enhances both the coercive field and exchange gap of the surface state, in sharp contrast to that in ferromagnetic quantum anomalous Hall state. We propose that these peculiar features arise from the spin flip and flop transitions inherent to van der Waals antiferromagnet. The versatile tunability of the quantum anomalous Hall effect in MnBi2Te4 paves the way for potential applications in topological antiferromagnetic spintronics., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

The quantum anomalous Hall effect in layered antiferromagnet MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ harbors a rich interplay between magnetism and topology, holding a significant promise for low-power electronic devices and topological antiferromagnetic spintronics. In recent years, MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has garnered considerable attention as the only known material to exhibit the antiferromagnetic quantum anomalous Hall effect. However, this field faces significant challenges as realizing quantized transport at zero magnetic fields depends critically on fabricating high-quality device. In this article, we address the detrimental influences of fabrication on MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ by simply depositing an AlO$_x$ thin layer on the surface prior to fabrications. Optical contrast and magnetotransport measurements on over 50 samples demonstrate that AlO$_x$ can effectively preserve the pristine state of the samples and significantly enhance the anomalous Hall effect towards quantization. Scaling analysis reveals the Berry curvature dominated mechanism of the anomalous Hall effect at various magnetic configurations. By adjusting the gate voltage, we uncover a gate independent antiferromagnetism in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$.
