Search

The discovery of topological semimetals with multifold band crossings has opened up a new and exciting frontier in the field of topological physics. These materials exhibit large Chern numbers, leading to long double Fermi arcs on their surfaces, which are protected by either crystal symmetries or topological order. The impact of these multifold crossings extends beyond surface science, as they are not constrained by the Poincar\'e classification of quasiparticles and only need to respect the crystal symmetry of one of the 1651 magnetic space groups. Consequently, we observe the emergence of free fermionic excitations in solid-state systems that have no high-energy counterparts, protected by non-symmorphic symmetries. In this work, we review the recent theoretical and experimental progress made in the field of multifold topological semimetals. We begin with the theoretical prediction of the so-called multifold fermions and discuss the subsequent discoveries of chiral and magnetic topological semimetals. Several experiments that have realized chiral semimetals in spectroscopic measurements are described, and we discuss the future prospects of this field. These exciting developments have the potential to deepen our understanding of the fundamental properties of quantum matter and inspire new technological applications in the future., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

Nonreciprocal transport effects can occur in the normal state of conductors and in superconductors when both inversion and time-reversal symmetry are broken. Here, we consider systems where magnetochiral anisotropy (MCA) of the energy spectrum due to an externally applied magnetic field results in a rectification effect in the normal state and a superconducting (SC) diode effect when the system is proximitised by a superconductor. Focussing on nanowire systems, we obtain analytic expressions for both normal state rectification and SC diode effects that reveal the commonalities - as well as differences - between these two phenomena. Furthermore, we consider the nanowire brought into an (almost) helical state in the normal phase or a topological superconducting phase when proximitised. In both cases this reveals that the topology of the system considerably modifies its nonreciprocal transport properties. Our results provide new insights into how to determine the origin of nonreciprocal effects and further evince the strong connection of nonreciprocal transport with the topological properties of a system., Comment: Main text: 5 pages, 3 figures. The interaction between ammonia (NH$_3$) and (alumino)silicates is of fundamental and applied importance, yet the specifics of NH$_3$ adsorption on silicate surfaces remain largely unexplored, mainly because of experimental challenges related to their electrically insulating nature. An example of this knowledge gap is evident in the context of ice nucleation on silicate dust, wherein the role of NH$_3$ for ice nucleation remains debated. This study explores the fundamentals of the interaction between NH$_3$ and microcline feldspar (KAlSi$_3$O$_8$), a common aluminosilicate with outstanding ice nucleation abilities. Atomically resolved non-contact atomic force microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory-based calculations elucidate the adsorption geometry of NH$_3$ on the lowest-energy surface of microcline, the (001) facet, and its interplay with surface hydroxyls and molecular water. NH$_3$ and H$_2$O are found to adsorb molecularly in the same adsorption sites, creating H-bonds with the proximate surface silanol (Si-OH) and aluminol (Al-OH) groups. Despite the closely matched adsorption energies of the two molecules, NH$_3$ readily yields to replacement by H$_2$O, challenging the notion that ice nucleation on microcline proceeds via the creation of an ordered H$_2$O layer atop pre-adsorbed NH$_3$ molecules., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

Using heterodyne transient grating spectroscopy, we observe a significant enhancement of exciton diffusion within a monolayer WSe$_2$ stacked on top of graphene. We further demonstrate that the diffusion dynamics can be optically tuned on the ultrafast time scale (i.e. a few picoseconds) by altering the photoexcited charge carrier density in graphene. The results reveal that, on a time scale of a few picoseconds, the effective diffusion constant in the WSe$_2$/graphene heterostructure is approximately 40 cm$^2 $/s, representing a substantial improvement over the 2 cm$^2 $/s typical for an isolated monolayer of WSe$_2$. The enhanced diffusion can be understood in terms of a transient screening of impurities, charge traps, and defect states in WSe$_2$ by photoexcited charge carriers in graphene. Furthermore, we observe that the diffusion within WSe$_2$ is affected by interlayer interactions, like charge transfer, exhibiting different dynamic states depending on the incident excitation fluence. These findings underscore the dynamic nature of screening and diffusion processes in heterostructures of 2D semiconductors and graphene and provide valuable insights for future applications of these systems in ultrafast optoelectronic devices.

Photonic metasurfaces offer exceptional control over light at the nanoscale, facilitating applications spanning from biosensing, and nonlinear optics to photocatalysis. Many metasurfaces, especially resonant ones, rely on periodicity for the collective mode to form, which makes them subject to the influences of finite size effects, defects, and edge effects, all of which have considerable negative impact at the application level. These aspects are especially important for quasi-bound state in the continuum (BIC) metasurfaces, for which the collective mode is highly sensitive to perturbations due to high quality factors and strong near-field enhancement. Here, we quantitatively investigate the mode formation in quasi-BIC metasurfaces on the individual resonator level using scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) in combination with a new image processing technique. We find that the quasi-BIC mode is formed at a minimum size of 10 x 10-unit cells much smaller than expected from far-field measurements. Furthermore, we show that the coupling direction of the resonators, defects and edge states have pronounced influence on the quasi-BIC mode. This study serves as a link between the far-field and near-field responses of metasurfaces, offering crucial insights for optimizing spatial footprint and active area, holding promise for augmenting applications such as catalysis and biospectroscopy., Comment: 30 pages, 6 figures, 8 supplementary figures

State tomography allows to characterize quantum states, and was recently applied to reveal the dynamic magnetization state of a parametrically driven magnet. The identification of non-classical states, such as squeezed states, relies on a careful analysis of their emission and their distinction from thermal and vacuum fluctuations. A technique allowing to detect equilibrium magnetization fluctuations is a crucial first step in this regard. In this Letter, we show that inductive magnon noise spectroscopy (iMNS) allows to characterize the thermal magnetization fluctuations of a ferromagnetic thin film in a broadband coplanar waveguide-based scheme. Relative to a cold microwave background, the microwaves emitted by the equilibrium magnetization fluctuations can be detected via spectrum analysis. We provide a comprehensive picture of our microwave system by quantitatively modeling its response, including the thermalizing influence of the cables. The model allows for direct comparison to low-power broadband ferromagnetic resonance measurements with excellent agreement, corroborating the equilibrium character of the iMNS measurement by probing the linear response of the equilibrium state. We report tunneling spectroscopy and transport measurements in superconducting Al and ferromagnetic-insulator EuS bilayers. The samples display remanent spin-splitting, roughly half the superconducting gap, and supercurrent transport above the average paramagnetic limit. We interpret this behavior as arising from the interplay between two characteristic length scales: the superconducting coherence length, $\xi$, and the magnetic domain size, $d$. By comparing experimental results to a theoretical model, we find $\xi/d \approx 10$. In this regime, spin-averaging across the micromagnetic configuration can locally suppress superconductivity, resulting in percolative supercurrent flow., Comment: 15 pages, 4+7 figures

Bi$_2$Se$_3$ has been the focus of intense interest over the past decade due to its topological properties. Bi surfaces are known to form on Bi$_2$Se$_3$ upon exposure to atmosphere, but their electronic structure has not been investigated. We report band structure measurements of such Bi surfaces using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Measured spectra can be well explained by the band structure of a single bilayer of Bi on Bi$_2$Se$_3$, and show that Bi surfaces consistently dominate the photoemission signal for air exposure times of at least 1 hour. These results demonstrate that atmospheric effects should be taken into consideration when identifying two-dimensional transport channels, and when designing surface-sensitive measurements of Bi$_2$Se$_3$, ideally limiting air exposure to no more than a few minutes.

Van der Waals heterostructures of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides provide a unique platform to engineer optoelectronic devices tuning their optical properties via stacking, twisting, or straining. Using ab initio Many-Body Perturbation Theory, we predict the electronic and optical (absorption and photoluminescence spectra) properties of MoS$_2$/WS$_2$ and MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ hetero-bilayers with different stacking and twisting. We analyse the valley splitting and optical transitions, and explain the enhancement or quenching of the inter- and intra-layer exciton states. Contrary to established models, that focus on transitions near the high-symmetry point K, our results include all possible transitions across the Brillouin Zone. This result, for a twisted Se-based heterostructures, in an interlayer exciton with significant electron density in both layers and a mixed intralayer exciton distributed over both MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$. We propose that it should be possible to produce an inverted order of the excitonic states in some MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterostructures, where the energy of the intralayer WSe$_2$ exciton is lower than that in MoSe$_2$. We predict the variability of the exciton peak positions ($\sim$100 meV) and the exciton radiative lifetimes, from pico- to nano-seconds, and even micro-seconds in twisted bilayers. The control of exciton energies and lifetimes paves the way towards applications in quantum information technologies and optical sensing.

Transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) show unique physical, optical, and electronic properties. The known phases of TMDs are 2H and 3R in bulk form, 1T and associated reconstructions, and 1H in monolayer form. This paper reports a hypothetical phase, 9R, that may exist in TMDs (Mo, W)(S, Se, Te)$_2$, meeting both dynamical stability and elastic stability criteria. 9R phase has the same space group as 3R, $i.e.$ rhombohedral $R3m$ without inversion symmetry, and has 9 layers in a conventional unit cell. We find that 9R has an energy within 1 meV per formula unit of 3R and can be energetically favored by a particular strain condition. We further calculate the electronic, elastic, piezoelectric, Raman, and second-harmonic generation signatures of 9R TMDs and compare them with the corresponding 2H and 3R phases. 9R has similar properties to 3R but shows distinctive Raman peaks in the low-frequency regime, improved piezoelectric properties, and unique band splitting arising from layer coupling at the conduction band minimum. Heterostructures of magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) and superconductors (SCs) in two-dimensional (2D) slab and one-dimensional (1D) nanoribbon geometries have been predicted to host, respectively, chiral Majorana edge states (CMESs) and Majorana bound states (MBSs). We study the topological properties of such MTI/SC heterostructures upon variation of the geometry from wide slabs to quasi-1D nanoribbon systems and as a function of the chemical potential, the magnetic doping, and the induced superconducting pairing potential. To do so, we construct effective symmetry-constrained low-energy Hamiltonians accounting for the real-space confinement. For a nanoribbon geometry with finite width and length, we observe different phases characterized by CMESs, MBSs, as well as coexisting CMESs and MBSs, as the chemical potential, the magnetic doping and/or the width are varied.

Magnetic adatoms on superconductors give rise to Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states that hold considerable interest for the design of topological superconductivity. Here, we show that YSR states are also an ideal platform to engineer structures with intricate wave-function symmetries. We assemble structures of iron atoms on the quasi-two-dimensional superconductor $2H$-NbSe$_2$. The Yu-Shiba-Rusinov wave functions of individual atoms extend over several nanometers enabling hybridization even at large adatom spacing. We show that the substrate can be exploited to deliberately break symmetries of the adatom structure in ways unachievable in the gas phase. We highlight this potential by designing chiral wave functions of triangular adatom structures confined within a plane. Our results significantly expand the range of interesting quantum states that can be engineered using arrays of magnetic adatoms on superconductors.

We present a detailed theoretical analysis of a peculiar generation of multiple bound states in the continuum (BICs) in two-dimensional periodic arrays of dielectric spheres. They emerge in high-symmetry lattices with the $C_{6v}$ and $C_{4v}$ point groups and involve doubly degenerate quasi-guided modes at the $\Gamma$ point that can couple to external radiation. By tuning a system parameter, the doubly degenerate modes can exhibit accidental BICs at a critical parameter. In the vicinity of the critical parameter, the two bands originating from the degenerate mode exhibit multiple off-$\Gamma$ BICs. They move and annihilate across the two bands by changing the parameter around the critical one. A ring-like high $Q$ channel pinned with multiple BICs emerges particularly for the $C_{6v}$ case. Across the critical coupling, the total vorticity of the multiple BICs is conserved. The $\vb*{k}\cdot\vb*{p}$ perturbation theory explains some features of the phenomena reasonably well., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures

Trapped materials at the interfaces of two-dimensional heterostructures (HS) lead to reduced coupling between the layers, resulting in degraded optoelectronic performance and device variability. Further, nanobubbles can form at the interface during transfer or after annealing. The question of what is inside a nanobubble, i.e. the trapped material, remains unanswered, limiting the studies and applications of these nanobubble systems. In this work, we report two key advances. Firstly, we quantify the interface quality using RAW-format optical imaging, and distinguish between ideal and non-ideal interfaces. The HS-substrate ratio value is calculated using a transfer matrix model, and is able to detect the presence of trapped layers. The second key advance is identification of water as the trapped material inside a nanobubble. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to show that optical imaging alone can quantify interface quality, and find the type of trapped material inside spontaneously formed nanobubbles. We also define a quality index parameter to quantify the interface quality of HS. Quantitative measurement of the interface will help answer the question whether annealing is necessary during HS preparation, and will enable creation of complex HS with small twist angles. Identification of the trapped materials will pave the way towards using nanobubbles for novel optical and engineering applications.

We observed magnetocapacitance oscillations in InAs/GaSb quantum wells separated by a $20$\,nm AlSb middle barrier. By realizing independent ohmic contacts for electrons in InAs and holes in the GaSb layer, we found an out-of-plane oscillatory response in capacitance representing the density of states of this system. We were able to tune the charge carrier densities by applying a DC bias voltage, identifying the formation of beating signatures for forward bias. The coexistence of two distinguishable two dimensional charge carrier systems of unequal densities was verified. The corresponding Landau phase diagram presents distinct features originating from the two observed densities. A giant Rashba coefficient ranging from $430-612$\,meV$\text{\AA}$ and large \textit{g}-factor value underlines the influence of spin orbit interaction.

The Euler class characterizes the topology of two real bands isolated from other bands in two-dimensions. Despite various intriguing topological properties predicted up to now, the candidate real materials hosting electronic Euler bands are extremely rare. Here, we show that in a quantum spin Hall insulator with two-fold rotation $C_{2z}$ about the $z$-axis, a pair of bands with nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant turn into magnetic Euler bands under in-plane Zeeman field or in-plane ferromagnetic ordering. The resulting magnetic insulator generally carries a nontrivial second Stiefel-Whitney invariant. In particular, when the topmost pair of occupied bands carry a nonzero Euler number, the corresponding magnetic insulator can be called a magnetic Euler insulator. Moreover, the topological phase transition between a trivial magnetic insulator and a magnetic Stiefel-Whitney or Euler insulator is mediated by a stable topological semimetal phase in which Dirac nodes carrying non-Abelian topological charges exhibit braiding processes across the transition. Using the first-principles calculations, we propose various candidate materials hosting magnetic Euler bands. We especially show that ZrTe$_5$ bilayers under in-plane ferromagnetism are a candidate system for magnetic Stiefel-Whitney insulators in which the non-Abelian braiding-induced topological phase transitions can occur under pressure.

One-dimensional (1D) interacting electrons are often described as a Luttinger liquid1-4 having properties that are intrinsically different from Fermi liquids in higher dimensions5,6. 1D electrons in materials systems exhibit exotic quantum phenomena that can be tuned by both intra- and inter-1D-chain electronic interactions, but their experimental characterization can be challenging. Here we demonstrate that layer-stacking domain walls (DWs) in van der Waals heterostructures form a broadly tunable Luttinger liquid system including both isolated and coupled arrays. We have imaged the evolution of DW Luttinger liquids under different interaction regimes tuned by electron density using a novel scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) technique. Single DWs at low carrier density are highly susceptible to Wigner crystallization consistent with a spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid, while at intermediate densities dimerized Wigner crystals form due to an enhanced magneto-elastic coupling. Periodic arrays of DWs exhibit an interplay between intra- and inter-chain interactions that gives rise to new quantum phases. At low electron densities inter-chain interactions are dominant and induce a 2D electron crystal composed of phased-locked 1D Wigner crystal in a staggered configuration. Increased electron density causes intra-chain fluctuation potentials to dominate, leading to an electronic smectic liquid crystal phase where electrons are ordered with algebraical correlation decay along the chain direction but disordered between chains. Our work shows that layer-stacking DWs in 2D heterostructures offers new opportunities to explore Luttinger liquid physics.

This study presents a novel, ultralow-power single-sensor-based electronic nose (e-nose) system for real-time gas identification, distinguishing itself from conventional sensor-array-based e-nose systems whose power consumption and cost increase with the number of sensors. Our system employs a single metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensor built on a suspended 1D nanoheater, driven by duty cycling-characterized by repeated pulsed power inputs. The sensor's ultrafast thermal response, enabled by its small size, effectively decouples the effects of temperature and surface charge exchange on the MOS nanomaterial's conductivity. This provides distinct sensing signals that alternate between responses coupled with and decoupled from the thermally enhanced conductivity, all within a single time domain during duty cycling. The magnitude and ratio of these dual responses vary depending on the gas type and concentration, facilitating the early-stage gas identification of five gas types within 30 s via a convolutional neural network (classification accuracy = 93.9%, concentration regression error = 19.8%). Additionally, the duty-cycling mode significantly reduces power consumption by up to 90%, lowering it to 160 $\mu$W to heat the sensor to 250$^\circ$C. Manufactured using only wafer-level batch microfabrication processes, this innovative e-nose system promises the facile implementation of battery-driven, long-term, and cost-effective IoT monitoring systems., Comment: 67 pages, 10 figures

In this letter, we use knowledge gained from our recent study to present a technique for separation of nanoparticles such as exosomes, anticancer drugs, and vaccines. The technique involves adding non-adsorptive polymers to a system in which two types of nanoparticles with the same size and zeta potential are dispersed. The different types of nanoparticles can be separated based on differences in their hydrophobicities and softness of the polymer. Using the non-additive Asakura-Oosawa theory and assuming a realistic model system, we were able to separate the two types of the particles with the same size and zeta potential in the model system.

It is long believed that the response theory can give quantum correction (or interband coherent effects) to the semiclassical theory, while both formulations essentially are perturbatively solving the time-dependent Sch\"odinger equation in a periodic potential probed by the electric field within the independent-particle approximation. In this work, by extending the semiclassical theory under a uniform electric field to the nonlinear AC regime, we show explicitly that up to the second order of the electric field, the AC semiclassical theory gives exactly the same results as the response theory in the absence of relaxation. Remarkably, this equivalence can be expected even in DC limit when the zero-frequency divergence is regulated on the same footing. Particularly, at the linear order of the electric field, we show that both formulations deliver the same Drude current, intrinsic anomalous Hall current, and the displacement current, where the last one arising from the time variation of the first-order \textit{positional shift} can only appear in AC transport and is usually overlooked. Furthermore, at the second order of the electric field, we show that all the well-known transport effects, including the nonlinear Drude and Hall effects (that can be driven by the Berry curvature dipole or/and quantum metric dipole) can be derived by both formulations. Additionally, we show that the nonlinear displacement current due to the time variation of the second-order \textit{positional shift} and the nonlinear intrinsic Ohmic current due to the second-order energy correction (which is determined by the first-order \textit{positional shift}) in AC semiclassical theory can also be obtained by response theory.

We use bosonization, retaining band curvature terms, to analyze the Hall response of interacting bosonic and fermionic two-leg ladders threaded by a flux. We derive an explicit expression of the Hall imbalance in a perturbative expansion in the band curvature, retaining fully the interactions. We show that the flux dependence of the Hall imbalance allows to distinguish the two phases (Meissner and Vortex) that are present for a bosonic ladder. For small magnetic field we relate the Hall resistance, both for bosonic and fermionic ladders, to the density dependence of the charge sitffness of the system in absence of flux. Fluctuations affect the functionality of nanodevices. Thermodynamic uncertainty relations (TURs), derived within the framework of stochastic thermodynamics, show that a minimal amount of dissipation is required to obtain a given relative energy current dispersion, that is, current precision has a thermodynamic cost. It is therefore of great interest to explore the possibility that TURs are violated, particularly for quantum systems, leading to accurate currents at lower cost. Here, we show that two quantum harmonic oscillators are synchronized by coupling to a common thermal environment, at strong dissipation and low temperature. In this regime, periodically modulated couplings to a second thermal reservoir, breaking time-reversal symmetry and taking advantage of non-Markovianity of this latter reservoir, lead to strong violation of TURs for local work currents, while maintaining finite output power. We calculate the energy current flowing in the bulk of a (2+1)-dimensional system of massive Dirac fermions and along a (1+1)-dimensional domain wall generated by flipping the sign of the particle mass. We show that, at low temperatures and in the long-wavelenghth limit, the system does not support a bulk thermal Hall current proportional to the temperature gradient. The only such contribution is due to states localised at the domain wall. This puts an end to a controversy existing in the literature and amends previous results obtained via first-order perturbation calculations.

We show that 1D lattice models exhibit superdiffusive transport in the presence of random "nodal impurities" in the absence of interaction. Here a nodal impurity is defined as a localized state, the wave function of which has zeros (nodes) in momentum space. The dynamics exponent $z$, a defining quantity for transport behaviors, is computed to establish this result. To be specific, in a disordered system having only nodal impurities, the dynamical exponent $z=4n/(4n-1)$ where $n$ is the order of the node. If the system has time reversal, the nodes appear in pairs and the dynamical exponent can be enhanced to $z=8n/(8n-1)$. As $1

Two-dimensional materials are a highly tunable platform for studying the momentum space topology of the electronic wavefunctions and real space topology in terms of skyrmions, merons, and vortices of an order parameter. Such textures for electronic polarization can exist in moir\'e heterostructures. A quantum-mechanical definition of local polarization textures in insulating supercells was recently proposed. Here, we propose a definition for local polarization that is also valid for systems with topologically non-trivial bands. We introduce semilocal hybrid polarizations, which are valid even when the Wannier functions in a system cannot be made exponentially localized in all dimensions. We use this definition to explicitly show that nontrivial real-space polarization textures can exist in topologically non-trivial systems with non-zero Chern number under (1) an external superlattice potential, and (2) under a stacking-induced moir\'e potential. In the latter, we find that while the magnitude of the local polarization decreases discontinuously across a topological phase transition from trivial to topologically nontrivial, the polarization does not completely vanish. The Non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) is a phenomenon in which the bulk states tends to the boundary in Non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, and has a wide range of application scenarios. The fully understanding of the skin mode anomalies in NHSEs is vital for the application. Recently, some innovative work reported the suppression [Phys. Rev. Lett 127, 256402 (2021)] and enhancement [Phys. Rev. Lett 131, 116601 (2023)] of NHSEs by magnetic field, respectively. In our work, we constructed magnetic field-like onsite potential energy distribution and random-like onsite potential energy distribution, and found that onsite potential energy has non-monotonic and monotonic suppression patterns on skin modes. Non-monotonic and monotonic suppression patterns are two typical forms in the transition from order to disorder. Only relying on onsite potential energy, not only we have obtained a profound understanding of the connection and difference between order and disorder, but also developed a general strategy to achieve both robustness and adjustability of the skin modes. By linking with the scaling theory in disorder, the controllable suppression of NHSEs, based on mutual transformation between order and disorder, is generalized to higher dimensions., Comment: 9 pages and 4 figures in the main text, 6 pages and 7 figures in the supplemental material

Bottom-up assembly of nanocrystals (NCs) into ordered arrays, or superlattices (SLs), is a promising route to design materials with new functionalities, but the degree of control over assembly into functional structures remains challenging. Using electrostatics, rather than density, to tune the interactions between semiconductor NCs, we watch self-assembly proceeding through a metastable liquid phase. We systematically investigate the phase behavior as a function of quench conditions in situ and in real time using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Through quantitative fitting to colloid, liquid, and SL models, we extract the time evolution of each phase and the system phase diagram, which we find to be consistent with short-range attractive interactions. Using the phase diagram's predictive power, we establish control of the self-assembly rate over three orders of magnitude, and identify one- and two-step self-assembly regimes, with only the latter implicating the metastable liquid as an intermediate. Importantly, the presence of the metastable liquid increases SL formation rates relative to the equivalent one-step pathway, and SL order counterintuitively increases with the rate, revealing a highly desirable and generalizable kinetic strategy to promote and enhance ordered assembly., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Due to technological needs, nanoscale heat management, energy conversion and quantum thermodynamics have become key areas of research, putting heat pumps and nanomotors center stage. The treatment of these particular systems often requires the use of adiabatic expansions in terms of the frequency of the external driving or the velocity of some classical degree of freedom. However, due to the difficulty of getting the expressions, most works have only explored first-order terms. Despite this, adiabatic expansions have allowed the study of intriguing phenomena such as adiabatic quantum pumps and motors, or electronic friction. Here, we use nonequilibrium Green's functions, within a Schwinger-Keldysh approach, to develop second-order expressions for the energy, heat, and charge currents. We illustrate, through two simple models, how the obtained formulas produce physically consistent results, and allow for the thermodynamic study of unexplored phenomena, such as second-order monoparametric pumping.

Klein tunneling is an old topic in relativistic quantum physics, and has been observed recently in graphene where massless particles reside. Here, we propose a new heterostructure platform for Klein tunneling to occur, which consists of a Weyl-semimetal-based normal state/superconductor (NS) junction. By developing a Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk-like theory, we find that Klein tunneling occurs at normal incidence, which can lead to differential conductance doubling. If the (single) Weyl semimeltals are replaced by double Weyl semimetals, anti-Klein tunneling will take place of Klein tunneling. In unconventional high-temperature (high-Tc) superconductors, the symmetry-breaking electronic orders intertwined with the superconductivity provide important clues for understanding the nature of the unconventional pairing mechanism. Recently, an exotic superconducting order showing spatially periodic order parameter modulations and translational symmetry breaking, namely the pair density wave (PDW) state, has attracted broad attention. Without breaking translational symmetry, point group symmetry breaking may also induce superconductivity modulations on different atom sites within a single unit cell. However, the intra-unit-cell superconductivity modulation has never been carefully investigated before. Here, using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we report the observation of intra-unit-cell superconductivity modulations in the superconducting gap size and the coherence peak sharpness in monolayer high-Tc Fe(Te,Se) films epitaxially grown on SrTiO3(001) substrates. Further analysis shows that the maxima and minima in the superconductivity modulation are centered at the crystallographic locations of the Te/Se atoms, revealing the breaking of the glide-mirror symmetry of the Te/Se atoms in monolayer high-Tc Fe(Te,Se) films grown on SrTiO3(001). Our findings provide precise microscopic information of superconductivity within the lattice unit cell and indicate that the p-orbital electrons of the Te/Se atoms also play an important role in Cooper pairing in unconventional high-Tc iron-based superconductors.

The use of graphene in spintronic devices depend, on its ability to convert a spin current into an electric charge current. We have systematically investigated the spin pumping induced spin-to-charge current conversion at the Graphene/FM interface and the effect of interface modification through high spin orbit coupling (SOC) material (Pt) as an interlayer (IL) of varying thicknesses by using broadband FMR spectroscopy. The spin mixing conductance was enhanced from $1.66 \times 10^{18}$ m$^{-2}$ to $2.72 \times 10^{18}$ m$^{-2}$ where as the spin current density was enhanced from 0.135$\pm $0.003 to 0.242$\pm$0.004 MA/m$^{2}$ at the Graphene/FM interface due to the interface modification using high SOC material Pt as an interlayer. We observe the value of spin current to charge current conversion efficiency $\approx 0.292\times10^{-3}$ nm for the Graphene/FM interface. These findings support the idea that Graphene in contact with high SOC material (Pt) be a potential candidate for spintronic applications, specifically for spin-torque-based memory applications., Comment: 8 Pages, 6 figures

It was recently suggested that proximitized gate-defined Ge hole nanowires could serve as an alternative materials platform for the realization of topological Majorana zero modes (MZMs). Here, we theoretically study the expected experimental signatures of Ge-based MZMs in tunneling conductance measurements, taking into account that unintentional random disorder is unavoidably present in realistic devices. Explicitly, we present numerically calculated local and nonlocal tunneling conductance spectra (as functions of bias voltage and magnetic field) for two different wire lengths, two different disorder models, two different parent superconductors (Al and NbTiN), and various disorder strengths, which we relate to an estimated lower bound for the disorder strength in Ge-based hybrid devices that we extract from the experimentally reported hole mobilities in current state-of-the-art two-dimensional Ge hole gases. We find that even if the actual disorder strength in the Ge-based hybrid device exceeds this theoretical lower bound by an order of magnitude, the system is still in the weak disorder regime, where the topological superconductivity is intact and the local conductance spectra manifest clear end-to-end correlated zero-bias peaks if and only if the system hosts topological end MZMs. This shows that, despite the relatively small pristine topological gaps ($\sim\,$a few tens of $\mu$eV), Ge-based hybrid devices are a promising alternative platform for Majorana experiments due to the extremely high materials quality, which leads to an increased gap-to-disorder ratio and, therefore, to less ambiguity in the experimental tunneling conductance data compared to InAs-based devices.

We present a theory of a two qubit gate with macroscopic singlet-triplet (ST) qubits in synthetic spin-one chains in InAsP quantum dot nanowires. The macroscopic topologically protected singlet-triplet qubits are built with two spin-half Haldane quasiparticles. The Haldane quasiparticles are hosted by synthetic spin-one chain realized in chains of InAsP quantum dots embedded in an InP nanowire, with four electrons each. The quantum dot nanowire is described by a Hubbard-Kanamori (HK) Hamiltonian derived from an interacting atomistic model. Using exact diagonalization and Matrix Product States (MPS) tools, we demonstrate that the low-energy behavior of the HK Hamiltonian is effectively captured by an antiferromagnetic spin-one chain Hamiltonian. Next we consider two macroscopic qubits and present a method for creating a tunable coupling between the two macroscopic qubits by inserting an intermediate control dot between the two chains. Finally, we propose and demonstrate two approaches for generating highly accurate two-ST qubit gates : (1) by controlling the length of each qubit, and (2) by employing different background magnetic fields for the two qubits., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Sum rules for linear response functions give powerful and experimentally-relevant relations between frequency moments of response functions and ground state properties. In particular, renewed interest has been drawn to optical conductivity and density-density sum rules and their connection to quantum geometry in topological materials. At the same time, recent work has also illustrated the connection between quantum geometry and second-order nonlinear response functions in quantum materials, motivating the search for exact sum rules for second-order response that can provide experimental probes and theoretical constraints for geometry and topology in these systems. Here we begin to address these questions by developing a general formalism for deriving sum rules for second-order response functions. Using generalized Kramers-Kronig relations, we show that the second-order Kubo formula can be expressed in terms of a spectral density that is a sum of Dirac delta functions in frequency. We show that moments of the spectral density can be expressed in terms of averages of equal-time commutators, yielding a family of generalized sum rules; furthermore, these sum rules constrain the large-frequency asymptotic behavior of the second harmonic generation rate. We apply our formalism to study generalized $f$-sum rules for the second-order density-density response function and the longitudinal nonlinear conductivity. We show that for noninteracting electrons in solids, the generalized $f$-sum rule can be written entirely in terms of matrix elements of the Bloch Hamiltonian. Finally, we derive a family of sum rules for rectification response, determining the large-frequency asymptotic behavior of the time-independent response to a harmonic perturbation., Comment: 17 pages

Electric and magnetic waveguides are considered in planar Dirac materials like graphene as well as their classical version for relativistic particles of zero mass and electric charge. In order to solve the Dirac-Weyl equation analytically, we have assumed the displacement symmetry of the system along a direction. In these conditions we have examined the rest of symmetries relevant each type, magnetic or electric system, which will determine their similarities and differences. We have worked out waveguides with square profile in detail to show up some of the most interesting features also in quantum and classical complementary contexts. A spin-photon interface based on the luminescence of a singly charged quantum dot in a micropillar cavity allows for the creation of photonic entangled states. Current devices suffer from cavity birefringence, which limits the generation of spin-photon entanglement. In this paper, we theoretically study the light absorption and emission by the interface with an anisotropic cavity and derive the maximal excitation and spin-photon entanglement conditions. We show that the concurrence of the spin-photon state equal to one and complete quantum dot population inversion can be reached for a micropillar cavity with any degree of birefringence by tuning the quantum dot resonance strictly between the cavity modes. This sweet spot is also valid for generating a multiphoton cluster state, as we demonstrate by calculating the three-tangle and fidelity with the maximally entangled state., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Incompressibility plays a key role in the geometric description of fractional quantum Hall fluids. It is naturally related to quantum area-preserving diffeomorphisms and the underlying Girvin-MacDonald-Plazman algebra, which gives rise to an emergent non-relativistic massive spin-2 mode propagating in the bulk. The corresponding metric tensor can be identified with a nematic order parameter for the bulk states. In the linearised regime with a flat background, it has been shown that this mode can be described by a spin-2 Schroedinger action. However, quantum area-preserving diffeomorphisms also suggest the existence of higher-spin modes that cannot be described through nematic fractional quantum Hall states. Here, we consider p-atic Hall phases, in which the corresponding p-atic order parameters are related to higher-rank symmetric tensors. We then show that in this framework, non-relativistic massive chiral higher-spin fields naturally emerge and that their dynamics is described by higher-spin Schroedinger actions. We finally show that these effective actions can be derived from relativistic massive higher-spin theories in 2+1 dimensions after taking a non-relativistic limit., Comment: 5+6 pages

Thermal transport in crystals is influenced by chemistry, boundaries, and nanostructure. The phonon band structure extracted from molecular-dynamics simulations provides an illuminating view of both the type and extent of prevalence of wavelike mechanisms underlying the transport, yet falls short of elucidating the nature of thermal evolution for different phonon regimes. Here we present an analysis framework for the characterization of the entropic signature of the mechanisms induced by the existence of boundaries and nanostructure, using both equilibrium and nonequilibrium atomistic simulations. Specifically, we examine the effects of phonon confinement, Bragg scattering, and local resonances on the configurational phase space in room-temperature nanostructured silicon, and quantify how each modifies the rate of entropy production and thermal relaxation. We reveal that the presence of phonon local resonances spanning the full spectrum enables a highly ordered regime of heat conduction, where irreversible evolution and entropy maximization are severely hindered by extensive mode hybridizations caused by the resonances. This unique regime of transport paves the way for ultra-precise phonon control for a wide range of applications in condensed matter physics.

Magnetic domain wall bimerons (DWBMs) are topological spin textures residing within the magnetic domain walls of in-plane magnets. In this study, we employ both numerical and analytical methods to explore the stabilization of N\'eel-type DWBMs in a ferromagnet (FM)/heavy metal (HM) bilayer, facilitated by interfacial Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (DMI), and their dynamics when excited by damping-like spin-orbit torque. Our findings reveal two unique and intriguing dynamic mechanisms, which depend on the polarization direction of the spin current: In the first scenario, the magnetic domain wall serves as a track that confines the motion of the bimeron and effectively suppresses the skyrmion Hall effect. In the second scenario, pushing the magnetic domain wall triggers a rapid sliding of the bimeron along the wall. This process significantly enhances the dynamics of the DWBM, resulting in a velocity increase of approximately 40 times compared to other topological solitons, including skyrmions and bimeron solitons. The damping effect plays a varied role in these mechanisms. While traditionally considered a deleterious effect in quantum dot spin qubits, the spin-orbit interaction is recently being revisited as it allows for rapid coherent control by on-chip AC electric fields. For electrons in bulk silicon, SOC is intrinsically weak, however, it can be enhanced at surfaces and interfaces, or through atomic placement. Here we show that the strength of the spin-orbit coupling can be locally enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude in the manybody wave functions of multi-donor quantum dots compared to a single donor, reaching strengths so far only reported for holes or two-donor system with certain symmetry. Our findings may provide a pathway towards all-electrical control of donor-bound spins in silicon using electric dipole spin resonance (EDSR).

We study the formation and properties of perfectly-flat zero energy bands in a multi-layer graphene systems in the chiral limit. Employing the degrees of freedoms of the multi-layer system, such as relative twist-angle and relative shifts, in a way that preserves a set of symmetries, we define a two-dimensional parameter plane that hosts lines of two and four flat bands. This plane enables adiabatic continuation of multi-layer chiral systems to weakly coupled bi- and tri-layer systems, and through that mapping provides tools for calculating the Chern numbers of the flat bands. We show that a flat band of Chern number $C$ can be spanned by $C$ effective Landau levels, all experiencing an effective flux of $1/C$ flux quantum per unit cell, and each carrying its own intra-unit-cell wave function. The flat bands do not disperse under the effect of a perpendicular magnetic field, and the gap to the dispersive bands closes when the externally applied flux cancels the $1/C$ effective flux., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

We propose a tilt-assisted chirality Hall effect in the normal metal-superconductor (NS) junctions based on the time-reversal broken type-I Weyl semimetals. It is found that the chirality-contrasting skew reflection occurs at the NS interface due to the tilt of the Weyl cones, which is responsible for the nonzero transverse chirality Hall currents. Distinct from the Hall effect induced by the Berry curvature, we further illustrate that the transverse chirality current here is determined by the symmetry of the tilt. Specifically, both the transverse chirality Hall current and the transverse charge Hall current may occur when the tilt breaks the mirror symmetry ($\mathcal{M}$). However, a pure transverse chirality Hall current with zero net charge is present when the tilt breaks $\mathcal{M}$ symmetry but preserves the combined $\mathcal{MC}$ symmetry, where $\mathcal{C}$ represents the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ exchange symmetry., Comment: 9 pages, 4 fgures

The paper investigates the systematic dependencies of the anisotropy field and the strength of spin-orbit (SO) interaction on gate voltage in Ta/FeB/MgO nanomagnets. Our findings reveal an intriguing opposite polarity in the gate-voltage dependencies of the anisotropy field and the coefficient of SO interaction across all studied nanomagnets. This opposite polarity signifies that both the strength of spin-orbit interaction and the demagnetization field are effectively modulated by the gate voltage, exhibiting an increase with higher gate voltages. This finding indicates that the gate voltage modulation of spin-orbit interaction and the demagnetization field are two major contributions to the Voltage-Controlled Magnetic Anisotropy (VCMA) effect in FeB nanomagnets. Due to the opposite polarities of these contributions, they effectively counterbalance each other, resulting in a reduction of the VCMA effect. Optimizing the balance between these contributions could potentially lead to a substantial enhancement of the VCMA effect. We present a machine learning method for swiftly identifying nanobubbles in graphene, crucial for understanding electronic transport in graphene-based devices. Nanobubbles cause local strain, impacting graphene's transport properties. Traditional techniques like optical imaging are slow and limited for characterizing multiple nanobubbles. Our approach uses neural networks to analyze graphene's density of states, enabling rapid detection and characterization of nanobubbles from electronic transport data. This method swiftly enumerates nanobubbles and surpasses conventional imaging methods in efficiency and speed. It enhances quality assessment and optimization of graphene nanodevices, marking a significant advance in condensed matter physics and materials science. In superconductors that lack inversion symmetry, a supercurrent flow can lead to nondissipative magnetoelectric effects. We offer a straightforward formalism to obtain a supercurrent-induced magnetization in superconductors with broken inversion symmetry, which may have orbital, layer, sublattice, or valley degrees of freedom, multiband noncentrosymmetric superconductors. The nondissipative magnetoelectric effect may find applications in fabricating quantum computation platforms or efficient superconducting spintronic devices. We explore how the current-induced magnetization can be employed to create and manipulate Majorana zero modes in a simple hybrid structure.

We consider the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) at the filling factor $8/17$, where signatures of incompressibility have been observed in the zeroth Landau level of bilayer graphene. We propose an Abelian state described by the "$\overline{(8/3)}\bar{2}1^{3}$" parton wave function, where a parton itself forms an FQHE state. This state is topologically distinct from the $8/17$ Levin-Halperin state, a daughter state of the Moore-Read state. We carry out extensive numerical exact diagonalization of the Coulomb interaction at 8/17 in the zeroth Landau level of bilayer graphene but find that our results cannot conclusively determine the topological order of the underlying ground state. We work out the low-energy effective theory of the $\overline{(8/3)}\bar{2}1^{3}$ edge and make predictions for experimentally measurable properties of the state which can tell it apart from the 8/17 Levin-Halperin state., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures and includes supplemental material

Heterostructures (HSs) formed by the transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) materials have shown great promise in next-generation opto/electronic and photonic applications. An artificially twisted HS, allows us to manipulate the optical, and electronic properties. With this work, we introduce the understanding of the complex energy transfer (ET) process governed by the dipolar interaction in a twisted molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) homobilayer without any charge-blocking interlayer. We fabricated an unconventional homobilayer (i.e., HS) with a large twist angle by combining the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and mechanical exfoliation (Exf.) techniques to fully exploit the lattice parameters mismatch and indirect/direct (CVD/Exf.) bandgap nature. This effectively weaken the charge transfer (CT) process and allows the ET process to take over the carrier recombination channels. We utilize a series of optical and electron spectroscopy techniques complementing by the density functional theory calculations, to describe a massive photoluminescence enhancement from the HS area due to an efficient ET process. Our results show that the electronically decoupled MoSe2 homobilayer is coupled by the ET process, mimicking a 'true' heterobilayer nature., Comment: 4 figures

We analyze magnetic properties of monolayers and bilayers of chromium trihalides, CrI$_3$, in two different stacking configurations: AA and rhombohedral ones. Our main focus is on the corresponding Curie temperatures, hysteresis curves, equilibrium spin structures, and spin wave excitations. To obtain all these magnetic characteristic, we employ the atomistic spin dynamics and Monte Carlo simulation techniques. The model Hamiltonian includes isotropic exchange coupling, magnetic anisotropy, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Though the latter is relatively weak in CrI$_3$, we consider a more general case assuming also an enhancement of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the corresponding Janus structures and by external electric fields. Large exciton-polariton optical nonlinearities present a key mechanism for photonics-based communication, ultimately in the quantum regime. Enhanced nonlinear response from various materials hosting excitons and allowing for their strong coupling with light is therefore the topic of intense studies, both in theoretical and experimental domains. Reports on the scattering rates arising due to various system's nonlinearities, such as the exciton-exciton Coulomb interaction and the Pauli blocking that leads to the saturation of the exciton oscillator strength, however, are contradictory. In this work, we develop a formalism allowing to track the exciton nonlinearities appearing in the regime of strong coupling with photons, that includes finite temperatures, mixing of the exciton excited states, and the dark exciton contributions to saturation self-consistently. The equilibrium path integration approach employed here to address the polariton composite nature, leads to a transparent hierarchy of various contributions to nonlinearity. At the same time, by taking the simplest limit of zero temperature and so-called "rigid" excitons, through our framework we retrieve the expressions derived in conventional approaches for exciton interaction constants. In particular, our theory allows to clearly show that such interaction constants cannot be used as fitting parameters tunable in a wide range of values, as they are strictly defined by the material properties, and that other explanations are due for large optical nonlinearities recently reported., Comment: 22 pages, 1 figure

The negatively charged boron-vacancy center ($\mathrm{V}_{\mathrm{B}}^-$) in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) has recently emerged as a highly promising quantum sensor. Compared to the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond, the change with temperature of the spin transition energy of $\mathrm{V}_{\mathrm{B}}^-$ is more than an order of magnitude larger, making it a potential nanoscale thermometer with superior sensitivity. However, the underlying mechanism of the observed large temperature dependence remains an open question. In this work, using isotopically purified $\mathrm{h}{}^{10}\mathrm{B}{}^{15}\mathrm{N}$, we systematically characterize the zero-field splitting, hyperfine interaction, and spin relaxation time of $\mathrm{V}_{\mathrm{B}}^-$ from 10 to 350$~$K. We carry out first-principle calculations of the $\mathrm{V}_{\mathrm{B}}^-$ spin-phonon interaction and show that a second-order effect from finite-temperature phonon excitations is responsible for the observed changes in experiments. By fitting our experimental results to a physically motivated model, we extract the dominant phonon mode which agrees well with our simulations. Finally, we investigate the dynamic nuclear spin polarization process at cryogenic temperatures.
