This letter presents a 360{\deg} phase detector cell for performing phase-shift measurements on multiple output systems. An analog phase detector, capable of detecting a maximum range of {\pm}90{\deg}, has been used to perform a double multiplication of two signals, both in-phase and phase-shifted. The proposed solution broadens the frequency range beyond other solutions that require to fulfill the quadrature condition. Subsequently, the possibility of reaching the theoretical limit of phase shift within a hybrid coupler ({\Phi} < 90{\deg} {\pm} 90{\deg}) is discussed by using four straight-line equations to characterize the phase detector response. The proposed solution allows to extend up to 360{\deg} the phase detection range and provide an increased immunity with respect to both impedance mismatching and phase deviations within the hybrid coupler. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed design, a phase detector cell prototype has been implemented using a commercial hybrid coupler with a phase shift of 92.5{\deg} {\pm} 0.5{\deg} at 3.1-5.9 GHz, an external switch and a microcontroller with 2 kB of memory. Photolithography is believed to be a complementary technique to large-area printing, allowing for nanometer-scale integration and offering cost-efficiency. For organic electronics though, adapting photolithography is very challenging due to chemical incompatibilities. However, with the help of Alexander Zakhidov, orthogonal resins opened up the prospect of adapting the well-established process of photolithography for organic electronics. Here, we present a hybrid fabrication method for organic electrochemical transistors by combining orthogonal photolithography and inkjet printing, enabling high uniformity and reliability. Automatic live video commenting is with increasing attention due to its significance in narration generation, topic explanation, etc. However, the diverse sentiment consideration of the generated comments is missing from the current methods. Sentimental factors are critical in interactive commenting, and lack of research so far. Thus, in this paper, we propose a Sentiment-oriented Transformer-based Variational Autoencoder (So-TVAE) network which consists of a sentiment-oriented diversity encoder module and a batch attention module, to achieve diverse video commenting with multiple sentiments and multiple semantics. Specifically, our sentiment-oriented diversity encoder elegantly combines VAE and random mask mechanism to achieve semantic diversity under sentiment guidance, which is then fused with cross-modal features to generate live video comments. Furthermore, a batch attention module is also proposed in this paper to alleviate the problem of missing sentimental samples, caused by the data imbalance, which is common in live videos as the popularity of videos varies. Extensive experiments on Livebot and VideoIC datasets demonstrate that the proposed So-TVAE outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of the quality and diversity of generated comments. A new simulation technique to obtain the synchronized steady-state solutions existing in coupled oscillator systems is presented. The technique departs from a semi-analytical formulation presented in previous works. It extends the model of the admittance function describing each individual oscillator to a piecewise linear one. This provides a global formulation of the coupled system, considering the whole characteristic of each voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) in the array. In comparison with the previous local formulation, the new formulation significantly improves the accuracy in the prediction of the system synchronization ranges. The technique has been tested by comparison with computationally demanding circuit-level Harmonic Balance simulations in an array of Van der Pol-type oscillators and then applied to a coupled system of FET based oscillators at 5 GHz, with very good agreement with measurements., Comment: Index Terms: Coupled-oscillator system, harmonic balance, phased arrays

In this paper we derive the asymptotic distribution of normalized residual empirical autocovariances and autocorrelations under weak assumptions on the noise. We propose new portmanteau statistics for vector autoregressive moving-average (VARMA) models with uncorrelated but non-independent innovations by using a self-normalization approach. We establish the asymptotic distribution of the proposed statistics. This asymptotic distribution is quite different from the usual chi-squared approximation used under the independent and identically distributed assumption on the noise, or the weighted sum of independent chi-squared random variables obtained under nonindependent innovations. We establish the asymptotic behaviour of the sum of squared residuals autocovariances and autocorrelations for the class of multi-variate power transformed asymmetric models. We then derive a portmanteau test. We establish the asymptotic distribution of the proposed statistics. These asymptotic results are illustrated by Monte Carlo experiments. An application to a bivariate real financial data is also proposed.

This article develops the asymptotic distribution of the least squares estimator of the model parameters in periodicvector autoregressive time series models (hereafter PVAR) with uncorrelated but dependent innovations. When theinnovations are dependent, this asymptotic distributions can be quite different from that of PVAR models with in-dependent and identically distributed (iid for short) innovations developed in Ursu and Duchesne (2009). Modifiedversions of the Wald tests are proposed for testing linear restrictions on the parameters. These asymptotic results are illustrated by Monte Carlo experiments. Magnetic skyrmions are topological magnetic textures that hold great promise as nanoscale bits of information in memory and logic devices. Although room-temperature ferromagnetic skyrmions and their current-induced manipulation have been demonstrated, their velocity has been limited to about 100 meters per second. In addition, their dynamics are perturbed by the skyrmion Hall effect, a motion transverse to the current direction caused by the skyrmion topological charge. Here, we show that skyrmions in compensated synthetic antiferromagnets can be moved by current along the current direction at velocities of up to 900 meters per second. This can be explained by the cancellation of the net topological charge leading to a vanishing skyrmion Hall effect. In a superconductor/ferromagnet hybrid, a magnetically controlled singlet-to-triplet Cooper pair conversion can modulate the superconducting critical temperature. In these triplet superconducting spin valves, such control usually requires inhomogeneous magnetism. However, in the presence of spin-orbit coupling from an interfacial heavy-metal layer, the singlet/triplet conversion rate and thus the critical temperature, can be controlled via the magnetization direction of a single homogeneous ferromagnet. Here, we report significantly enhanced controllable pair conversion to a triplet state in a Nb/Pt/Co/Pt superconducting spin valve in which Pt/Co/Pt is homogeneously magnetized and proximity-coupled to a superconducting layer of Nb. The Co/Pt interface furthest away from Nb is modified by a sub-nanometer-thick layer of Cu or Au. We argue that the enhancement is most likely associated from an improvement of the Co/Pt interface due to the insertion of Cu and Au layers. Additionally, the higher normalized orbital moments in Au measured using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism shows that increasing spin-orbit coupling enhances the triplet proximity effect - an observation supported by our theoretical calculations. The extended kernel ridge regression (EKRR) method with odd-even effects was adopted to improve the description of the nuclear charge radius using five commonly used nuclear models. These are: (i) the isospin dependent $A^{1/3}$ formula, (ii) relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) theory, (iii) Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) model HFB25, (iv) the Weizs\"acker-Skyrme (WS) model WS$^\ast$, and (v) HFB25$^\ast$ model. In the last two models, the charge radii were calculated using a five-parameter formula with the nuclear shell corrections and deformations obtained from the WS and HFB25 models, respectively. For each model, the resultant root-mean-square deviation for the 1014 nuclei with proton number $Z \geq 8$ can be significantly reduced to 0.009-0.013~fm after considering the modification with the EKRR method. The best among them was the RCHB model, with a root-mean-square deviation of 0.0092~fm. The extrapolation abilities of the KRR and EKRR methods for the neutron-rich region were examined and it was found that after considering the odd-even effects, the extrapolation power was improved compared with that of the original KRR method. The strong odd-even staggering of nuclear charge radii of Ca and Cu isotopes and the abrupt kinks across the neutron $N=126$ and 82 shell closures were also calculated and could be reproduced quite well by calculations using the EKRR method., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

In the seminal paper (Phys. Rep. 52, 263, 1979), Boris Chirikov showed that the standard map does not exhibit a boundary to chaos, but rather that there are small islands (islets) of stability for arbitrarily large values of the nonlinear perturbation. In this context, he established that the area of the islets in the phase space and the range of parameter values where they exist should decay following power laws with exponents -2 and -1, respectively. In this paper, we carry out a systematic numerical search for islets of stability and we show that the power laws predicted by Chirikov hold. Furthermore, we use high-resolution 3D islets to reveal that the islets volume decays following a similar power law with exponent -3., Comment: 7 pages

The design of a cusp-like digital pulse shaper for particle energy measurements requires the definition of four parameters whose values are defined based on the nature of the shaper input signal (timing, noise, ...) provided by a sensor. However, after high doses of radiation, sensors degenerate and their output signals do not meet the original characteristics, which may lead to erroneous measurements of the particle energies. We present in this paper an evolvable cusp-like digital shaper, which is able to auto-recalibrate the original hardware implementation into a new design that match the original specifications under the new sensor features.

Internet of Things systems exists in various areas of our everyday life. For example, sensors installed in smart cities and homes are processed in edge and cloud computing centres providing several benefits that improve our lives. The place of data processing is related to the required system response times -- processing data closer to its source results in a shorter system response time. The Osmotic Computing concept enables flexible deployment of data processing services and their possible movement, just like particles in the osmosis phenomenon move between regions of different densities. At the same time, the impact of complex computer architecture on the environment is increasingly being compensated by the use of renewable and low-carbon energy sources. However, the uncertainty of supplying green energy makes the management of Osmotic Computing demanding, and therefore their autonomy is desirable. In the paper, we present a framework enabling osmotic computing simulation based on renewable energy sources and autonomic osmotic agents, allowing the analysis of distributed management algorithms. We discuss the challenges posed to the framework and analyze various management algorithms for cooperating osmotic agents. In the evaluation we show that changing the adaptation logic of the osmotic agents, it is possible to increase the self-consumption of renewable energy sources or increase the usage of low emission ones.

Ultracold atoms trapped in optical superlattices provide a simple platform for realizing the seminal Aubry-Andr\'{e}-Harper (AAH) model. However, the periodic modulations on the nearest-neighbour hoppings have been ignored in this model. In this paper, we find that optical superlattice system actually can be approximately described by a generalized AAH model in the case of $V_1\gg V_2$, with periodic modulations on both on-site energies and nearest-neighbour hoppings, supporting much richer topological properties that are absent in the standard AAH model. Specifically, by calculating Chern numbers and topological edge states, we show that the generalized AAH model possesses multifarious topological phases and topological phase transitions, as compared to the standard AAH model only supporting a single topological phase. Our findings can open up more opportunities for using optical superlattices to study topological and localization physics.

It is shown that Birkhoff's theorem for the general theory of relativity is overcome in the $f(R)$-theory of gravitation. That means, the $f(R)$-theory of gravitation, unlike Einstein's general theory of relativity, does not forbid gravitational radiation from a spherically symmetric source (whether stationary or non-stationary). As a consequence, in the $f(R)$-theory a spherically symmetric gravitational deformation (e.g., collapse/expansion or pulsation) could emit gravitational waves (of tensor- and scalar polarization modes), a phenomenon impossible in the general relativity. A test model is examined and it turns out that the gravitational radiation is strongest when the surface of the deforming object is in the vicinity of the (modified) event horizon, even suddenly flares up just outside the latter. In this letter, within the $f(R)$-theory of gravitation, a gravitational wave equation and a formula for the gravitational emission power are derived. These formulae, along with searching for signals, can be used for the experimental test of the $f(R)$-theory. In general, including the spherically symmetry case, gravitational radiation of both tensor- and scalar polarization modes are allowed, although under some circumstance the contribution of scalar modes is strongly suppressed., Comment: LaTeX 10 pages, 5 figures

The nuclear charge density distribution plays an important role in nuclear physics and atomic physics. As one of the most frequently used models to obtain charge density distribution, the two-parameter fermi (2pF) model has been widely applied in both nuclear physics and atomic physics. Currently, the feedforward neural network has been employed to study the available 2pF model parameters for 86 nuclei, and it is found that by introducing A^{1/3} into the input parameter of the neural network, the accuracy and precision of the parameter learning effect are improved. Furthermore, the average result of multiple predictions is more reliable than the best result of a single prediction, and there is no significant difference between the average result of density value and of parameter value for the average charge density distribution. We extend the study of corrected thermodynamics for the 3D black holes conformally coupled to scalar field up to non-perturbative level. We calculate the exponential correction to entropy arises due to the microstate counting for quantum states on the boundary. This exponential correction in entropy attributes to the other thermodynamical quantities also. We study the stability and phase transition for this system of black hole under the influence of non-perturbative correction. In this paper and its sequel we continue our study of nilpotent symplectic alternating algebras. In particular we give a full classification of such algebras of dimension $10$ over any field. It is known that symplectic alternating algebras over $\mbox{GF}(3)$ correspond to a special rich class $\mathcal{C}$ of $2$-Engel $3$-groups of exponent $27$ and under this correspondence we will see that the nilpotent algebras correspond to a subclass of $\mathcal{C}$ that are those groups in $\mathcal{C}$ that have an extra group theoretical property that we refer to as being powerfully nilpotent and can be described also in the context of $p$-groups where $p$ is an arbitrary prime., Comment: 29 pages

Many studies have analyzed planetary occurrence rates and their dependence on the host's properties to provide clues to planet formation, but few have focused on the mutual occurrence ratio of different kinds of planets. Such relations reveal whether and how one type of planet evolves into another, e.g. from a cold Jupiter to a warm or even hot Jupiter, and demonstrate how stellar properties impact the evolution history of planetary systems. We propose a new classification of giant planets, i.e. cold Jupiter(CJ), warm Jupiter(WJ), and hot Jupiter(HJ), according to their position relative to the snow line in the system. Then, we derive their occurrence rates(${\eta}_{\rm HJ}$, ${\eta}_{\rm WJ}$, ${\eta}_{\rm CJ}$) with the detection completeness of RV(Radial Velocity) surveys(HARPS$\&$ CORALIE) considered. Finally, we analyze the correlation between the mutual occurrence ratios, i.e. ${\eta}{_{\rm CJ}} / {\eta}_{\rm WJ}$, ${\eta}{_{\rm CJ}} / {\eta}_{\rm HJ}$ or ${\eta}{_{\rm WJ}}/{\eta}_{\rm HJ}$, and various stellar properties, e.g. effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$. Our results show that the ${\eta}_{\rm HJ}$, ${\eta}_{\rm WJ}$ and ${\eta}_{\rm CJ}$ are increasing with the increasing $T_{\rm eff}$ when $T_{\rm eff}\in (4600,6600] K$. Furthermore, the mutual occurrence ratio between CJ and WJ, i.e. ${\eta}{_{\rm CJ}} /{\eta}_{\rm WJ}$, shows a decreasing trend with the increasing $T_{\rm eff}$. But, both ${\eta}{_{\rm CJ}}/{\eta}_{\rm HJ}$ and ${\eta}{_{\rm WJ}}/{\eta}_{\rm HJ}$ are increasing when the $T_{\rm eff}$ increases. Further consistency tests reveal that the formation processes of WJ and HJ may be dominated by orbital change mechanisms rather than the in-situ model. Beyond our solar system, aurorae have been inferred from radio observations of isolated brown dwarfs (e.g. Hallinan et al. 2006; Kao et al. 2023). Within our solar system, giant planets have auroral emission with signatures across the electromagnetic spectrum including infrared emission of H3+ and methane. Isolated brown dwarfs with auroral signatures in the radio have been searched for corresponding infrared features but have only had null detections (e.g. Gibbs et al. 2022). CWISEP J193518.59-154620.3. (W1935 for short) is an isolated brown dwarf with a temperature of ~482 K. Here we report JWST observations of strong methane emission from W1935 at 3.326 microns. Atmospheric modeling leads us to conclude that a temperature inversion of ~300 K centered at 1-10 millibar replicates the feature. This represents an atmospheric temperature inversion for a Jupiter-like atmosphere without irradiation from a host star. A plausible explanation for the strong inversion is heating by auroral processes, although other internal and/or external dynamical processes cannot be ruled out. The best fit model rules out the contribution of H3+ emission which is prominent in solar system gas giants however this is consistent with rapid destruction of H3+ at the higher pressure where the W1935 emission originates (e.g. Helling et al. 2019)., Comment: Accepted in Nature 9 February 2024

Given a vast concern about high income inequality in Thailand as opposed to empirical findings around the world showing people's preference for fair income inequality over unfair income equality, it is therefore important to examine whether inequality in income distribution in Thailand over the past three decades is fair, and what fair inequality in income distribution in Thailand should be. To quantitatively measure fair income distribution, this study employs the fairness benchmarks that are derived from the distributions of athletes' salaries in professional sports which satisfy the concepts of distributive justice and procedural justice, the no-envy principle of fair allocation, and the general consensus or the international norm criterion of a meaningful benchmark. By using the data on quintile income shares and the income Gini index of Thailand from the National Social and Economic Development Council, this study finds that, throughout the period from 1988 to 2021, the Thai income earners in the bottom 20%, the second 20%, and the top 20% receive income shares more than the fair shares whereas those in the third 20% and the fourth 20% receive income shares less than the fair shares. Provided that there are infinite combinations of quintile income shares that can have the same value of income Gini index but only one of them is regarded as fair, this study demonstrates the use of fairness benchmarks as a practical guideline for designing policies with an aim to achieve fair income distribution in Thailand. This paper introduces a novel dynamical model, building upon the existing dynamical model for Deimos in the current numerical ephemerides, which only encompasses the simple libration effects of Deimos. The study comprehensively incorporates the rotational dynamics of Deimos influenced by the torque exerted by the major celestial bodies (Mars, the Sun) in the solar system within the inertial space. Consequently, a full dynamical model is formulated to account for the complete coupling between the rotation and orbit of Deimos. Simultaneously, employing precision orbit determination methods used for artificial satellites, we develop an adjustment model for fitting data to the complete model. The 12-order Adams--Bashforth--Moulton (ABM) integration algorithm is employed to synchronously integrate the 12 state variables of the full model to obtain the orbit of Deimos. Numerical simulation results indicate that the full dynamical model and adjustment model are stable and reliable. Compared to the simple model, the polar axis of Deimos in the inertial space exhibits a more complex oscillation in the full model. This work further advances the current dynamical model for Deimos and establishes the foundational model for the generation of a new set of precise numerical ephemerides for Deimos.

Epitaxial growth of WTe$_2$ offers significant advantages, including the production of high-qualityfilms, possible long range in-plane ordering and precise control over layer thicknesses. However,the mean island size of WTe$_2$ grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) in litterature is only a fewtens of nanometers, which is not suitable for an implementation of devices at large lateral scales.Here we report the growth of Td-WTe$_2$ ultrathin films by MBE on monolayer (ML) graphenereaching a mean flake size of $\cong$110nm, which is, on overage, more than three time larger thanprevious results. WTe$_2$ films thicker than 5nm have been successfully synthesized and exhibit theexpected Td-phase atomic structure. We rationalize epitaxial growth of Td-WTe$_2$ and propose asimple model to estimate the mean flake size as a function of growth parameters that can be appliedto other transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). Based on nucleation theory and Kolmogorov-Johnson-Meh-Avrami (KJMA) equation, our analytical model supports experimental data showinga critical coverage of 0.13ML above which WTe$_2$ nucleation becomes negligible. The quality ofmonolayer WTe$_2$ films is demonstrated from electronic band structure analysis using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in agreement with first-principle calculationsperformed on free-standing WTe$_2$ and previous reports., Comment: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces, 2024

Massive stars (those larger than 8 solar masses at formation) have radiative envelopes that cannot sustain a dynamo, the mechanism that produces magnetic fields in lower-mass stars. Despite this, approximately 7\% of massive stars have observed magnetic fields, the origin of which is debated. We used multi-epoch interferometric and spectroscopic observations to characterize HD 148937, a binary system of two massive stars. We found that only one star is magnetic and that it appears younger than its companion. The system properties and a surrounding bipolar nebula can be reproduced with a model in which two stars merged (in a previous triple system) to produce the magnetic massive star. This paper introduces an astronomical image alignment algorithm. This algorithm uses the means of the rows and columns of the original image for alignment, and finds the optimal offset corresponding to the maximum similarity by comparing different offsets between images. The similarity is evaluated by the standard deviation of the quotient divided by the means. This paper also discusses the theoretical feasibility of this algorithm. Electrostatically confined quantum dots in bilayer graphene have shown potential as building blocks for quantum technologies. To operate the dots, e.g., as qubits, a precise understanding and control of the confined states and their properties is required. Herein, a large-scale numerical characterization of confined quantum states in bilayer graphene dots is performed over an extensive range of gate-tunable parameters such as the dot size, depth, shape, and the bilayer graphene gap. The dot states' orbital degeneracy, wave function distribution, and valley g-factor are established and the parametric dependencies to achieve different regimes are provided. It is found that the dot states are highly susceptible to gate-dependent confinement and material parameters, enabling efficient tuning of confined states and valley g-factor modulation by quantum dot design.

In a recent work we have briefly introduced a new structural index for water that, unlike previous indicators, was devised specifically for generic contexts beyond bulk conditions, making it suitable for hydration and nanoconfinement settings. In this work we shall study this metric in detail, demonstrating its ability to reveal the existence of a fine-tuned interplay between local structure and energetics in liquid water. This molecular principle enables the establishment of an extended hydrogen bond network, while simultaneously allowing for the existence of network defects by compensating for uncoordinated sites. By studying different water models and different temperatures encompassing both the normal liquid and the supercooled regime, this molecular mechanism will be shown to underlie the two-state behavior of bulk water. Additionally, by studying functionalized self-assembled monolayers and diverse graphene-like surfaces, we shall show that this principle is also operative at hydration and nanoconfinement conditions, thus generalizing the validity of the two-liquids scenario of water to these contexts. This approach will allow us to define conditions for wettability, providing an accurate measure of hydrophobicity and a reliable predictor of filling and drying transitions. Hence, it might open the possibility of elucidating the active role of water in broad fields of biophysics and materials science. As a preliminary step, we shall study the hydration structure and hydrophilicity of graphene-like systems (parallel graphene sheets and carbon nanotubes) as a function of the confinement dimensionality. This paper investigates the potential of blockchain-based fan tokens, a class of crypto asset that grants holders access to voting on club decisions and other perks, as a mechanism for stimulating democratized decision-making and fan engagement in the sports and esports sectors. By utilizing an extensive dataset of 3,576 fan token polls, we reveal that fan tokens engage an average of 4,003 participants per poll, representing around 50% of token holders, underscoring their relative effectiveness in boosting fan engagement. The analyses identify significant determinants of fan token poll participation, including levels of voter (dis-)agreement, poll type, sports sectors, demographics, and club-level factors. This study provides valuable stakeholder insights into the current state of adoption and voting trends for fan token polls. It also suggests strategies for increasing fan engagement, thereby optimizing the utility of fan tokens in sports. The Mal'tsev product of two varieties of the same similarity type is not in general a variety, because it can fail to be closed under homomorphic images. In the previous paper we provided a new sufficient condition for such a product to be a variety. In this paper we extend that result by weakening the assumptions regarding the two varieties. We also explore the various special cases of our new result and provide a number of examples of its application.

An optical security element containing an area of random rough relief is proposed. It combines the low cost of mass replication inherent in traditional security holograms with the impossibility of holographic copying, when the wave restored by the hologram is rewritten as a copy of this hologram. The proposed optical element is also protected from contact and photographic copying. Laboratory samples of optical elements were obtained by taking replicas of a rough surface. Identification of the authenticity of optical elements was demonstrated by calculating the cross-correlation of speckle patterns produced by coherent light scattered off different replicas. Drawing on the attention based view, this study explores the joint effects of natural disaster intensity at the country level with personal attributes in terms of gender, human capital, and fear of failure on the likelihood to enter social entrepreneurship. Using data on 107,386 observations across 30 countries, we find that natural disaster intensity has a positive effect on individuals likelihood to engage in social entrepreneurship. In addition, the effect of natural disaster intensity is greater for males, individuals lacking human capital, and those who fear failure. This work focuses on the coupling of trimmed shell patches using Isogeometric Analysis, based on higher continuity splines that seamlessly meet the $C^1$ requirement of Kirchhoff-Love-based discretizations. Weak enforcement of coupling conditions is achieved through the symmetric interior penalty method, where the fluxes are computed using their correct variationally consistent expression that was only recently proposed and is unprecedentedly adopted herein in the context of coupling conditions. The constitutive relationships account for generically laminated materials, although the proposed tests are conducted under the assumption of uniform thickness and lamination sequence. Numerical experiments assess the method for an isotropic and a laminated plate, as well as an isotropic hyperbolic paraboloid shell from the new shell obstacle course. The boundary conditions and domain force are chosen to reproduce manufactured analytical solutions, which are taken as reference to compute rigorous convergence curves in the $L^2$, $H^1$, and $H^2$ norms, that closely approach optimal ones predicted by theory. Additionally, we conduct a final test on a complex structure comprising five intersecting laminated cylindrical shells, whose geometry is directly imported from a STEP file. Symmetry-breaking plays a pivotal role in unlocking intriguing properties and functionalities in material systems. For example, the breaking of spatial and temporal symmetries leads to a fascinating phenomenon of superconducting diode effect. However, generating and precisely controlling the superconducting diode effect poses significant challenges. Here, we take a novel route with deliberate manipulation of magnetic charge potentials to realize unconventional superconducting flux-quantum diode effects. We achieve this through suitably tailored nanoengineered arrays of nanobar magnets on top of a superconducting thin film. We demonstrate the vital roles of inversion antisymmetry and its breaking in evoking unconventional superconducting effects-a magnetically symmetric diode effect and an odd-parity magnetotransport effect. These effects are non-volatilely controllable through in-situ magnetization switching of the nanobar magnets. Our findings promote the use of antisymmetry (breaking) for initiating unconventional superconducting properties, paving the way for exciting prospects and innovative functionalities in superconducting electronics.

In this article, we present direct numerical simulation results for the expansion of spherical cap bubbles attached to a rigid wall due to a sudden drop in the ambient pressure. The critical pressure drop beyond which the bubble growth becomes unstable is found to match well with the predictions from classical theory of heterogeneous nucleation imposing a quasi-static bubble evolution. When the pressure drop is significantly higher than the critical value, a liquid microlayer appears between the bubble and the wall. In this regime, the interface outside the microlayer grows at an asymptotic velocity that can be predicted from the Rayleigh--Plesset equation, while the contact line evolves with another asymptotic velocity that scales with a visco-capillary velocity that obeys the Cox--Voinov law. In general, three distinctive regions can be distinguished: the region very close to the contact line where dynamics is governed by visco-capillary effects, an intermediate region controlled by inertio-viscous effects away from the contact line yet inside the viscous boundary layer, and the region outside the boundary layer dominated by inertial effects. The microlayer forms in a regime where the capillary effects are confined in a region much smaller than the viscous boundary layer thickness. In this regime, the global capillary number takes values much larger then the critical capillary number for bubble nucleation, and the microlayer height is controlled by viscous effects and not surface tension.

As the concept of Industries 5.0 develops, industrial metaverses are expected to operate in parallel with the actual industrial processes to offer ``Human-Centric" Safe, Secure, Sustainable, Sensitive, Service, and Smartness ``6S" manufacturing solutions. Industrial metaverses not only visualize the process of productivity in a dynamic and evolutional way, but also provide an immersive laboratory experimental environment for optimizing and remodeling the process. Besides, the customized user needs that are hidden in social media data can be discovered by social computing technologies, which introduces an input channel for building the whole social manufacturing process including industrial metaverses. This makes the fusion of multi-source data cross Cyber-Physical-Social Systems (CPSS) the foundational and key challenge. This work firstly proposes a multi-source-data-fusion-driven operational architecture for industrial metaverses on the basis of conducting a comprehensive literature review on the state-of-the-art multi-source data fusion methods. The advantages and disadvantages of each type of method are analyzed by considering the fusion mechanisms and application scenarios. Especially, we combine the strengths of deep learning and knowledge graphs in scalability and parallel computation to enable our proposed framework the ability of prescriptive optimization and evolution. This integration can address the shortcomings of deep learning in terms of explainability and fact fabrication, as well as overcoming the incompleteness and the challenges of construction and maintenance inherent in knowledge graphs. The effectiveness of the proposed architecture is validated through a parallel weaving case study. In the end, we discuss the challenges and future directions of multi-source data fusion cross CPSS for industrial metaverses and social manufacturing in Industries 5.0.

Why do neurons communicate through spikes? By definition, spikes are all-or-none neural events which occur at continuous times. In other words, spikes are on one side binary, existing or not without further details, and on the other can occur at any asynchronous time, without the need for a centralized clock. This stands in stark contrast to the analog representation of values and the discretized timing classically used in digital processing and at the base of modern-day neural networks. As neural systems almost systematically use this so-called event-based representation in the living world, a better understanding of this phenomenon remains a fundamental challenge in neurobiology in order to better interpret the profusion of recorded data. With the growing need for intelligent embedded systems, it also emerges as a new computing paradigm to enable the efficient operation of a new class of sensors and event-based computers, called neuromorphic, which could enable significant gains in computation time and energy consumption -- a major societal issue in the era of the digital economy and global warming. In this review paper, we provide evidence from biology, theory and engineering that the precise timing of spikes plays a crucial role in our understanding of the efficiency of neural networks.

The objective of our research is to investigate the electrocatalytic properties of novel metal-free quantum dots (QDs) composed of the recently discovered 2D material penta-CN2, with the aim of replacing costly and scarce catalysts such as Pt and Pd. Employing a first-principles density functional theory (DFT) based approach, the geometries of the three penta-CN2 quantum dots (QDs) of increasing sizes, 3 x 3, 3 x 4, 4 x 4 are optimized. Through comprehensive analysis, our research extensively explored the structural stability of penta-CN2 QDs, delved into their electronic properties, and assessed their catalytic performance concerning the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER). Notably, the H-adsorbed penta-CN2 QDs exhibit a significant reduction in the HOMO-LUMO gap (E_{g}) ranging from 35% to 49% compared to the pristine QD. Next, we investigated their catalytic performance relevant to HER, using well-known descriptors: (i) adsorption energy, (ii) over-potential, (iii) Gibbs free energy and (iv) exchange current density along with the volcano curve. As far as size dependence of the catalytic performance is concerned, the value of Delta G^{(av)} is minimum for 3 x 3 penta-CN2 QD, with those of 3 x 4 and 4 x 4 QDs being slightly larger. Our calculations predict a high value of exchange current density 2.24 x 10^{-3} A-cm^{-2} for one of the sites (N11 for 3 x 3 QD), which we believe will lead to significantly enhanced HER properties. Our research outcomes hold great promise in advancing the discovery of abundant, non-toxic, and cost-effective catalysts for HER, playing a vital role in facilitating large-scale hydrogen production.

Predicting accurate normal maps of objects from two-dimensional images in regions of complex structure and spatial material variations is challenging using photometric stereo methods due to the influence of surface reflection properties caused by variations in object geometry and surface materials. To address this issue, we propose a photometric stereo network called a RMAFF-PSN that uses residual multiscale attentional feature fusion to handle the ``difficult'' regions of the object. Unlike previous approaches that only use stacked convolutional layers to extract deep features from the input image, our method integrates feature information from different resolution stages and scales of the image. This approach preserves more physical information, such as texture and geometry of the object in complex regions, through shallow-deep stage feature extraction, double branching enhancement, and attention optimization. To test the network structure under real-world conditions, we propose a new real dataset called Simple PS data, which contains multiple objects with varying structures and materials. Experimental results on a publicly available benchmark dataset demonstrate that our method outperforms most existing calibrated photometric stereo methods for the same number of input images, especially in the case of highly non-convex object structures. French and American participants listened to new music stimuli and evaluated the stimuli using either adjectives or quantitative musical dimensions. Results were analyzed using correspondence analysis (CA), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), multiple factor analysis (MFA), and partial least squares correlation (PLSC). French and American listeners differed when they described the musical stimuli using adjectives, but not when using the quantitative dimensions. The present work serves as a case study in research methodology that allows for a balance between relaxing experimental control and maintaining statistical rigor.

Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease decreasing life quality through symptoms such as bloody diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Endoscopy is a cornerstone of diagnosis and monitoring of UC. The Mayo endoscopic subscore (MES) index is the standard for measuring UC severity during endoscopic evaluation. However, the MES is subject to high inter-observer variability leading to misdiagnosis and suboptimal treatment. We propose using a machine-learning based MES classification system to support the endoscopic process and to mitigate the observer-variability. The system runs real-time in the clinic and augments doctors' decision-making during the endoscopy. This project report outlines the process of designing, creating and evaluating our system. We describe our initial evaluation, which is a combination of a standard non-clinical model test and a first clinical test of the system on a real patient.

We investigate the growth of stellar discs in Milky Way-mass galaxies using the magnetohydrodynamical simulations of the Auriga Project in a full cosmological context. We focus on the gas accretion process along the discs, calculating the net, infall and outflow rates as a function of galactocentric distance, and investigate the relation between them and the star formation activity. The stellar distributions of around 70% of the simulated galaxies exhibit an ``inside-out'' pattern, with older (younger) stellar populations preferentially located in the inner (outer) disc regions. In all cases, we find a very tight correlation between the infall, outflow and net accretion rates, as well as between these three quantities and the star formation rate. This is because the amount of gas which is ultimately available for star formation in each radial ring depends not only on the infall rates, but also on the amount of gas leaving the disc in outflows, which directly relates to the local star formation level. Therefore, any of these rates can be used to identify galaxies with inside-out growth. For these galaxies, the correlation between the dominant times of accretion/star formation and disc radius is well fitted by a linear function. We also find that, when averaged over galaxies with formation histories similar to the Milky Way, the simulated accretion rates show a similar evolution (both temporally- and radially-integrated) to the usual accretion prescriptions used in chemical evolution models, although some major differences arise at early times and in the inner disc regions., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures

Physical properties of ten millimeter-sized meteoroids from the Southern Delta Aquariids (SDA) shower are derived using optical observations from the Canadian Automated Meteor Observatory between 2020 and 2023. The meteors are found to ablate in two distinct erosion stages, the second stage showing a single, bright leading fragment. Our modelling interprets these observations as evidence for equal masses of compact grains embedded in a porous, low density matrix. The average bulk density of SDA meteors is found to be 1,420 $\pm$ 100 $\rm{kg \ m^{-3}}$, with the compact component having a density of 2,310 $\pm$ 160 $\rm{kg \ m^{-3}}$ and the porous component a density of $700\pm110$ $\rm{kg \ m^{-3}}$. The high bulk density of SDA meteors is comparable to densities found for the Quadrantid and Geminid showers, both of which also have low perihelion distances. The formal representation of cultural metadata has always been a challenge, considering both the heterogeneity of cultural objects and the need to document the interpretive act exercised by experts. This article provides an overview of the revalorization of the digital collection Mythologiae in Linked Open Data format. The research aims to explore the data of a collection of artworks (Mythologiae) by promoting the potential of the Semantic Web, focusing particularly on the formal representation of the association of cultural objects with literary sources, as realized by experts, also documenting their interpretations. The workflow consisted of defining the data model, cleaning and disambiguating the data, converting it (from tabular structure to graph), and conducting testing activities (particularly expert domain review of the dataset through competency questions and data visualizations). The result is the mythLOD platform, which presents the dataset and detailed research documentation. Additionally, the platform hosts two data visualization spaces (the online catalogue and a data storytelling experiment on the case study of the Aeneid) that enrich the project documentation as user-friendly test units for the dataset and constitute an additional project documentation tool and exploration of the collection., Comment: in Italian language

Near IR spectroscopic reverberation of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) potentially allows the infrared (IR) broad line region (BLR) to be reverberated alongside the disc and dust continua, while the spectra can also reveal details of dust astro-chemistry. Here, we describe results of a short pilot study (17 near-IR spectra over a 183 d period) for Mrk 509. The spectra give a luminosity-weighted dust radius of $\langle R_{\mathrm{d,lum}} \rangle = 186 \pm 4$ light-days for blackbody (large grain dust), consistent with previous (photometric) reverberation campaigns, whereas carbon and silicate dust give much larger radii. We develop a method of calibrating spectral data in objects where the narrow lines are extended beyond the slit width. We demonstrate this by showing our resultant photometric band light curves are consistent with previous results, with a hot dust lag at >40 d in the K band, clearly different from the accretion disc response at <20 d in the z band. We place this limit of 40 d by demonstrating clearly that the modest variability that we do detect in the H and K band does not reverberate on time-scales of less than 40 d. We also extract the Pa$\beta$ line light curve, and find a lag which is consistent with the optical BLR H$\beta$ line of $\sim$70-90 d. This is important as direct imaging of the near-IR BLR is now possible in a few objects, so we need to understand its relation to the better studied optical BLR., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers (NCVSi) - in 4H silicon carbide (SiC) constitute an ensemble of spin S = 1 solid state qubits interacting with the surrounding 14N and 29Si nuclei. As quantum applications based on a polarization transfer from the electron spin to the nuclei require the knowledge of the electron-nuclear interaction parameters, we have used high-frequency (94 GHz) electron-nuclear double resonance spectroscopy combined with first-principles density functional theory to investigate the hyperfine and nuclear quadrupole interactions of the basal and axial NV centers. We observed that the four inequivalent NV configurations (hk, kh, hh, and kk) exhibit different electron-nuclear interaction parameters, suggesting that each NV center may act as a separate optically addressable qubit. Finally, we rationalized the observed differences in terms of distinctions in the local atomic structures of the NV configurations.
