The incidence and properties of present-day dwarf galaxies hosting massive black holes (BHs) can provide important constraints on the origin of high-redshift BH seeds. Here we present high-resolution X-ray and radio observations of the low-metallicity, star-forming, dwarf-galaxy system Mrk 709 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. These data reveal spatially coincident hard X-ray and radio point sources with luminosities suggesting the presence of an accreting massive BH (M_BH ~ 10^5-10^7 Msun). Based on imaging from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we find that Mrk 709 consists of a pair of compact dwarf galaxies that appear to be interacting with one another. The position of the candidate massive BH is consistent with the optical center of the southern galaxy (Mrk 709 S), while no evidence for an active BH is seen in the northern galaxy (Mrk 709 N). We derive stellar masses of M ~ 2.5 x 10^9 Msun and M ~ 1.1 x 10^9 Msun for Mrk 709 S and Mrk 709 N, respectively, and present an analysis of the SDSS spectrum of the BH-host Mrk 709 S. At a metallicity of just ~10% solar, Mrk 709 is among the most metal-poor galaxies with evidence for an active galactic nucleus. Moreover, this discovery adds to the growing body of evidence that massive BHs can form in dwarf galaxies and that deep, high-resolution X-ray and radio observations are ideally suited to reveal accreting massive BHs hidden at optical wavelengths., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We combine the equations of motion that govern the dynamics of galaxies in the local volume with Bayesian techniques in order to fit orbits to published distances and velocities of galaxies within $\sim 3$ Mpc. We find a Local Group (LG) mass $2.3\pm 0.7\times 10^{12}{\rm M}_\odot$ that is consistent with the combined dynamical masses of M31 and the Milky Way, and a mass ratio $0.54^{+0.23}_{-0.17}$ that rules out models where our Galaxy is more massive than M31 with $\sim 95\%$ confidence. The Milky Way's circular velocity at the solar radius is relatively high, $245\pm 23$ km/s, which helps to reconcile the mass derived from the local Hubble flow with the larger value suggested by the `timing argument'. Adopting {\it Planck}'s bounds on $\Omega_\Lambda$ yields a (local) Hubble constant $H_0=67\pm 5$km/s/Mpc which is consistent with the value found on cosmological scales. Restricted N-body experiments show that substructures tend to fall onto the LG along the Milky Way-M31 axis, where the quadrupole attraction is maximum. Tests against mock data indicate that neglecting this effect slightly overestimates the LG mass without biasing the rest of model parameters. We revisit the exquisite archival radio data for the Type Ic supernova SN 1994I and present a revised model for the SN radio emission and a pilot study that aims to constrain the rate of C-band radio transients within the face-on host galaxy, M51 (NGC 5194). We find that the temporal and spectral evolution of the SN\,1994I radio emission are well fit by a synchrotron self-absorption model and use this to estimate physical parameters. We compute a pre-explosion mass loss rate of $\dot{M}=3.0 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ for the progenitor, consistent with those observed from galactic Wolf-Rayet stars. Our model makes different assumptions for the dynamical model for the shockwave interaction than the model previously published by \cite{weil11}, but our $\dot{M}$ is consistent with theirs to within errors and assumptions. Drawing from a subset of the archival radio observations from the Very Large Array collected for the monitoring of SN\,1994I, we conduct a pilot study to search for previously-unidentified transients. Data were primarily taken at a frequency of 4.9 GHz and are logarithmic in cadence, enabling sensitivity to transients with variability timescales ranging from days to months. We find no new transient detections in 31 epochs of data, allowing us to place a $2\sigma$ upper limit of 17 deg$^{-2}$ for the source density of radio transients above 0.5 mJy ($L\gtrsim4\times10^{25}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$ at the distance of M51). This study highlights the feasibility of utilizing archival high-cadence radio studies of supernova host galaxies to place constraints on the radio transient rate as a function of luminosity in the local Universe., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The magnitude of B-mode polarization in the cosmic microwave background as measured by BICEP2 favours models of chaotic inflation with a quadratic $m^2 \phi^2/2$ potential, whereas data from the Planck satellite favour a small value of the tensor-to-scalar perturbation ratio $r$ that is highly consistent with the Starobinsky $R + R^2$ model. Reality may lie somewhere between these two scenarios. In this paper, we propose an orbital iteration based parallel approach for electronic structure calculations. This approach is based on our understanding of the single-particle equations of independent particles that move in an effective potential. With this new approach, the solution of the single-particle equation is reduced to some solutions of independent linear algebraic systems and a small scale algebraic problem. Sampling theory has traditionally drawn tools from functional and complex analysis. Past successes, such as the Shannon-Nyquist theorem and recent advances in frame theory, have relied heavily on the application of geometry and analysis. The reliance on geometry and analysis means that the results are geometrically rigid. There is a subtle interplay between the topology of the domain of the functions being sampled, and the class of functions themselves. Bandlimited functions are somewhat limiting; often one wishes to sample from other classes of functions. The correct topological tool for modeling all of these situations is the sheaf; a tool which allows local structure and consistency to derive global inferences. This chapter develops a general sampling theory for sheaves using the language of exact sequences, recovering the Shannon-Nyquist theorem as a special case. It presents sheaf-theoretic approach by solving several different sampling problems involving non-bandlimited functions. The solution to these problems show that the topology of the domain has a varying level of importance depending on the class of functions and the specific sampling question being studied., Comment: 30 pages

We consider the question of learning in general topological vector spaces. By exploiting known (or parametrized) covariance structures, our Main Theorem demonstrates that any continuous linear map corresponds to a certain isomorphism of embedded Hilbert spaces. By inverting this isomorphism and extending continuously, we construct a version of the Ordinary Least Squares estimator in absolute generality. Our Gauss-Markov theorem demonstrates that OLS is a "best linear unbiased estimator", extending the classical result. We construct a stochastic version of the OLS estimator, which is a continuous disintegration exactly for the class of "uncorrelated implies independent" (UII) measures. As a consequence, Gaussian measures always exhibit continuous disintegrations through continuous linear maps, extending a theorem of the first author. Applying this framework to some problems in machine learning, we prove a useful representation theorem for covariance tensors, and show that OLS defines a good kriging predictor for vector-valued arrays on general index spaces. We also construct a support-vector machine classifier in this setting. We hope that our article shines light on some deeper connections between probability theory, statistics and machine learning, and may serve as a point of intersection for these three communities., Comment: 31 pages

We prove a structure theorem for multiplicative functions on the Gaussian integers, showing that every bounded multiplicative function on the Gaussian integers can be decomposed into a term which is approximately periodic and another which has a small U^{3}-Gowers uniformity norm. We apply this to prove partition regularity results over the Gaussian integers for certain equations involving quadratic forms in three variables. For example, we show that for any finite coloring of the Gaussian integers, there exist distinct nonzero elements x and y of the same color such that x^{2}-y^{2}=n^{2} for some Gaussian integer n. A large body of work has accumulated over the years in the study of the optical properties of single and coupled microcavities for a variety of applications, ranging from filters to sensors and lasers. The focus has been mostly on the geometry of individual resonators and/or on their combination in arrangements often referred to as photonic molecules (PMs). Our primary concern will be the lasing properties of PMs as ideal candidates for the fabrication of integrated microlasers, photonic molecule lasers. Whereas most calculations on PM lasers have been based on cold-cavity (passive) modes, i.e. quasi-bound states, a recently formulated steady-state ab initio laser theory (SALT) offers the possibility to take into account the spectral properties of the underlying gain transition, its position and linewidth, as well as incorporating an arbitrary pump profile. We will combine two theoretical approaches to characterize the lasing properties of PM lasers: for two-dimensional systems, the generalized Lorenz-Mie theory will obtain the resonant modes of the coupled molecules in an active medium described by SALT. A symmetric and a nonsymmetric variant of the additive Schwarz preconditioner are proposed for the solution of a nonsymmetric system of algebraic equations arising from a general finite volume element discretization of symmetric elliptic problems with large jumps in the entries of the coefficient matrices across subdomains. It is shown in the analysis, that the convergence of the preconditioned GMRES iteration with the proposed preconditioners, depends polylogarithmically on the mesh parameters, in other words, the convergence is only weakly dependent on the mesh parameters, and it is robust with respect to the jumps in the coefficients.

We consider power networks in which it is not possible to satisfy all loads at the demand nodes, due to some attack or disturbance to the network. We formulate a model, based on AC power flow equations, to restore the network to feasibility by shedding load at demand nodes, but doing so in a way that minimizes a weighted measure of the total load shed, and affects as few demand nodes as possible. Besides suggesting an optimal response to a given attack, our approach can be used to quantify disruption, thereby enabling "stress testing" to be performed and vulnerabilities to be identified. Optimization techniques including nonsmooth penalty functions, sequential linear programming, and active-set heuristics are used to solve this model. We describe an algorithmic framework and present convergence results, including a quadratic convergence result for the case in which the solution is fully determined by its constraints, a situation that arises frequently in the power systems application.

The need of totally secure online auction has led to the invention of many auction protocols. But as new attacks are developed, auction protocols also require corresponding strengthening. We analyze the auction protocol based on the well-known mathematical public-key knapsack problem for the design of asymmetric public-key knapsack trapdoor cryptosystem. Even though the knapsack system is not cryptographically secure, it can be used in certain auction situations. Facilitated spin models were introduced some decades ago to mimic systems characterized by a glass transition. Recent developments have shown that a class of facilitated spin models is also able to reproduce characteristic signatures of the structural relaxation properties of glass-forming liquids. While the equilibrium phase diagram of these models can be calculated analytically, the dynamics are usually investigated numerically. Here we propose a new network-based approach, called approximate master equation (AME), to the dynamics of the Fredrickson-Andersen model. The approach correctly predicts the critical temperature at which the glass transition occurs. We also find excellent agreement between the theory and the numerical simulations for the transient regime, except in close proximity of the liquid-glass transition. Finally, we analytically characterize the critical clusters of the model and show that the departures between our AME approach and the Monte Carlo can be related to the large interface between frozen and unfrozen spins at temperatures close to the glass transition., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

Classical algorithms for query optimization presuppose the absence of inconsistencies or uncertainties in the database and exploit only valid semantic knowledge provided, e.g., by integrity constraints. Data inconsistency or uncertainty, however, is a widespread critical issue in ordinary databases: total integrity is often, in fact, an unrealistic assumption and violations to integrity constraints may be introduced in several ways. In this report we present an approach for semantic query optimization that, differently from the traditional ones, relies on not necessarily valid semantic knowledge, e.g., provided by violated or soft integrity constraints, or induced by applying data mining techniques. Query optimization that leverages invalid semantic knowledge cannot guarantee the semantic equivalence between the original user's query and its rewriting: thus a query optimized by our approach yields approximate answers that can be provided to the users whenever fast but possibly partial responses are required. Also, we evaluate the impact of use of invalid semantic knowledge in the rewriting of a query by computing a measure of the quality of the answer returned to the user, and we rely on the recent theory of Belief Logic Programming to deal with the presence of possible correlation in the semantic knowledge used in the rewriting., Comment: 54 pages. We have discovered rotationally split core g-mode triplets and surface p-mode triplets and quintuplets in a terminal age main sequence A star, KIC 11145123, that shows both $\delta$ Sct p-mode pulsations and $\gamma$ Dor g-mode pulsations. This gives the first robust determination of the rotation of the deep core and surface of a main sequence star, essentially model-independently. We find its rotation to be nearly uniform with a period near 100 d, but we show with high confidence that the surface rotates slightly faster than the core. A strong angular momentum transfer mechanism must be operating to produce the nearly rigid rotation, and a mechanism other than viscosity must be operating to produce a more rapidly rotating surface than core. Our asteroseismic result, along with previous asteroseismic constraints on internal rotation in some B stars, and measurements of internal rotation in some subgiant, giant and white dwarf stars, has made angular momentum transport in stars throughout their lifetimes an observational science., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the discovery of bent double jets in the elliptical galaxy NGC 1272, a member of the Perseus cluster. The jets have a radius of curvature of ~2 kpc, much smaller than the galaxy half-light radius of ~11 kpc. This bending is likely a result of ram pressure, and indicates that the intracluster gas enters deep within the galaxy and that the interstellar medium of NGC 1272 has been significantly removed. X-ray observations of the surrounding intracluster medium allow us to constrain the pressure within the jet. We report on a series of new solutions to five-dimensional minimal supergravity. Our method applies to space-times with two commuting Killing symmetries and consists in combining dimensional reduction on two-spaces of constant curvature with reduction on a two-torus. The first gives rise to various generalized Bertotti-Robinson solutions supported by electric and magnetic fluxes, which presumably describe the near-horizon regions of black holes and black rings (strings). The second provides generating techniques based on U-duality of the corresponding three-dimensional sigma model. We identify duality transformations relating the above solutions to asymptotically flat ones and obtain new globally regular dyonic solitons. Some new extremal asymptotically flat multi-center solutions are constructed too. We also show that geodesic solutions of three-dimensional sigma models passing through the same target space point generically split into disjoint classes which cannot be related by the isotropy subgroup of U-duality., Comment: 25 pages, revtex4

As competitiveness increases, being able to guaranting QoS of delivered services is key for business success. It is thus of paramount importance the ability to continuously monitor the workflow providing a service and to timely recognize breaches in the agreed QoS level. The ideal condition would be the possibility to anticipate, thus predict, a breach and operate to avoid it, or at least to mitigate its effects. In this paper we propose a model checking based approach to predict QoS of a formally described process. The continous model checking is enabled by the usage of a parametrized model of the monitored system, where the actual value of parameters is continuously evaluated and updated by means of big data tools. Critical Infrastructures (CIs), such as smart power grids, transport systems, and financial infrastructures, are more and more vulnerable to cyber threats, due to the adoption of commodity computing facilities. Despite the use of several monitoring tools, recent attacks have proven that current defensive mechanisms for CIs are not effective enough against most advanced threats. In this paper we explore the idea of a framework leveraging multiple data sources to improve protection capabilities of CIs. We study the capacity region of the two-user Binary Fading (or Erasure) Interference Channel where the transmitters have no knowledge of the channel state information. We develop new inner-bounds and outer-bounds for this problem. We identify three regimes based on the channel parameters: weak, moderate, and strong interference regimes. Interestingly, this is similar to the generalized degrees of freedom of the two-user Gaussian interference channel where transmitters have perfect channel knowledge. We show that for the weak interference regime, treating interference as erasure is optimal while for the strong interference regime, decoding interference is optimal. For the moderate interference regime, we provide new inner and outer bounds. The inner-bound is based on a modification of the Han-Kobayashi scheme for the erasure channel, enhanced by time-sharing. We study the gap between our inner-bound and our outer-bounds for the moderate interference regime and compare our results to that of the Gaussian interference channel. Deriving our new outer-bounds has three main steps. We first create a contracted channel that has fewer states compared to the original channel, in order to make the analysis tractable. We then prove the Correlation Lemma that shows an outer-bound on the capacity region of the contracted channel also serves as an outer-bound for the original channel. The services of internet place a key role in the daily life by enabling the in sequence from anywhere. To provide somewhere to stay the communication and management in applications the web services has stimulated to multitier design. In this multitier the web servers contain front end logic and data with database servers. In this paper, we present binary protector intrusion detection systems which designs the network behavior of user sessions across both the front-end web server and the back-end database. By examining both web and subsequent database requests, we are able to rummage out attacks that independent IDS would not be able to distinguish.

The Birmingham Solar Oscillations Network (BiSON) has provided high-quality high-cadence observations from as far back in time as 1978. These data must be calibrated from the raw observations into radial velocity and the quality of the calibration has a large impact on the signal-to-noise ratio of the final time series. The aim of this work is to maximise the potential science that can be performed with the BiSON data set by optimising the calibration procedure. To achieve better levels of signal-to-noise ratio we perform two key steps in the calibration process: we attempt a correction for terrestrial atmospheric differential extinction; and the resulting improvement in the calibration allows us to perform weighted averaging of contemporaneous data from different BiSON stations. The improvements listed produce significant improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of the BiSON frequency-power spectrum across all frequency ranges. The reduction of noise in the power spectrum will allow future work to provide greater constraint on changes in the oscillation spectrum with solar activity. In addition, the analysis of the low-frequency region suggests we have achieved a noise level that may allow us to improve estimates of the upper limit of g-mode amplitudes., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 10 pages, 7 figures

We show that theories having second-order field equations in the context of higher-dimensional modified gravity are not restricted to the family of Lovelock Lagrangians, but can also be obtained if no a priori assumption on the relation between the metric and affine structures of space-time is made (Palatini approach). We illustrate this fact by considering the case of Palatini $f(R)$ gravities in five dimensions. The minimal geometric deformation approach is employed to show the existence of brane-world stellar distributions with vacuum Schwarzschild exterior, thus without energy leaking from the exterior of the brane-world star into the extra dimension. The interior satisfies all elementary criteria of physical acceptability for a stellar solution, namely, it is regular at the origin, the pressure and density are positive and decrease monotonically with increasing radius, finally all energy conditions are fulfilled. A very thin solid crust with negative radial pressure separates the interior from the exterior, having a thickness $\Delta $ inversely proportional to both the brane tension $\sigma $ and the radius $R$ of the star, i.e. $\Delta ^{-1}\sim R\,\sigma $. This brane-world star with Schwarzschild exterior would appear only thermally radiating to a distant observer and be fully compatible with the stringent constraints imposed on stellar parameters by observations of gravitational lensing, orbital evolutions or properties of accretion disks., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures. Using the predictive power of the effective field theory approach, we present a physical parametrization of the leading effects beyond the SM (BSM), that give us at present the best way to constrain heavy new-physics at low-energies. We show that other BSM effects are not independent from these ones, and we provide the explicit correlations. This information is useful to know where to primarily look for new physics in future experiments, and to know how this new physics is related to previous measurements, most importantly in electroweak-symmetry breaking processes or Higgs physics., Comment: 6 pages

We investigate the bulldozing motion of a granular sandpile driven forwards by a vertical plate. The problem is set up in the laboratory by emplacing the pile on a table rotating underneath a stationary plate; the continual circulation of the bulldozed material allows the dynamics to be explored over relatively long times, and the variation of the velocity with radius permits one to explore the dependence on bulldozing speed within a single experiment. We measure the time-dependent surface shape of the dune for a range of rotation rates, initial volumes and radial positions, for four granular materials, ranging from glass spheres to irregularly shaped sand. The evolution of the dune can be separated into two phases: a rapid initial adjustment to a state of quasi-steady avalanching perpendicular to the blade, followed by a much slower phase of lateral spreading and radial migration. The quasi-steady avalanching sets up a well-defined perpendicular profile with a nearly constant slope. This profile can be scaled by the depth against the bulldozer to collapse data from different times, radial positions and experiments onto common master curves that are characteristic of the granular material and depend on the local Froude number. The lateral profile of the dune along the face of the bulldozer varies more gradually with radial position, and evolves by slow lateral spreading. The spreading is asymmetrical, with the inward progress of the dune eventually arrested and its bulk migrating to larger radii. A one-dimensional depth-averaged model recovers the nearly linear perpendicular profile of the dune, but does not capture the finer nonlinear details of the master curves. A two-dimensional version of the model leads to an advection-diffusion equation that reproduces the lateral spreading and radial migration.

We derive a new Sequential-Monte-Carlo-based algorithm to estimate the capacity of two-dimensional channel models. The focus is on computing the noiseless capacity of the 2-D one-infinity run-length limited constrained channel, but the underlying idea is generally applicable. The proposed algorithm is profiled against a state-of-the-art method, yielding more than an order of magnitude improvement in estimation accuracy for a given computation time.

Random tunneling two-level systems (TLSs) in dielectrics have been of interest recently because they adversely affect the performance of superconducting qubits. The coupling of TLSs to qubits has allowed individual TLS characterization, which has previously been limited to TLSs within (thin) Josephson tunneling barriers made from aluminum oxide. Here we report on the measurement of an individual TLS within the capacitor of a lumped-element LC microwave resonator, which forms a cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) system and allows for individual TLS characterization in a different structure and material than demonstrated with qubits. Due to the reduced volume of the dielectric (80 $\mu$m$^{3}$), even with a moderate dielectric thickness (250 nm), we achieve the strong coupling regime as evidenced by the vacuum Rabi splitting observed in the cavity spectrum. A TLS with a coherence time of 3.2 $\mu$s was observed in a film of silicon nitride as analyzed with a Jaynes-Cummings spectral model, which is larger than seen from superconducting qubits. An analytical model based on variational principles for a thin-walled stiffened plate subjected to axial compression is presented. A system of nonlinear differential and integral equations is derived and solved using numerical continuation. The results show that the system is susceptible to highly unstable local--global mode interaction after an initial instability is triggered. Moreover, snap-backs in the response showing sequential destabilization and restabilization, known as cellular buckling or snaking, arise. The analytical model is compared to static finite element models for joint conditions between the stiffener and the main plate that have significant rotational restraint. However, it is known from previous studies that the behaviour, where the same joint is insignificantly restrained rotationally, is captured better by an analytical approach than by standard finite element methods; the latter being unable to capture cellular buckling behaviour even though the phenomenon is clearly observed in laboratory experiments., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication. The simple chaotic inflation is highly consistent with the BICEP2 experiment, and no-scale supergravity can be realized naturally in various string compactifications. Thus, we construct a chaotic inflation model in no-scale supergravity inspired from Type IIB string compactification with an anomalous U(1)_X gauged symmetry. We introduce two moduli T_1 and T_2 which transform non-trivially under U(1)_X, and some pairs of fundamental quarks charged under the SU(N) x U(1)_X gauge group. The non-trivial transformations of moduli under U(1)_X lead to a moduli-dependent Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term. The modulus T_2 and the real component of T_1 are stabilized by the non-perturbative effect from quark condensation and the U(1)_X D-term. In particular, the stabilization from the anomalous U(1)_X D-term with moduli-dependent FI term is crucial for inflation since it gives heavy mass to the real component of the modulus T_1 while keeping its axionic part light. We discuss the general structure and observational consequences of some of the simplest versions of chaotic inflation in supergravity in relation to the data by Planck 2013 and BICEP2. The overarching goal of this paper is to link the notion of sets of finite perimeter (a concept associated with $N^{1,1}$-spaces) and the theory of heat semigroups (a concept related to $N^{1,2}$-spaces) in the setting of metric measure spaces whose measure is doubling and supports a $1$-Poincar\'e inequality. We prove a characterization of sets of finite perimeter in terms of a short time behavior of the heat semigroup in such metric spaces. Although basketball is a dualistic sport, with all players competing on both offense and defense, almost all of the sport's conventional metrics are designed to summarize offensive play. As a result, player valuations are largely based on offensive performances and to a much lesser degree on defensive ones. Steals, blocks and defensive rebounds provide only a limited summary of defensive effectiveness, yet they persist because they summarize salient events that are easy to observe. Due to the inefficacy of traditional defensive statistics, the state of the art in defensive analytics remains qualitative, based on expert intuition and analysis that can be prone to human biases and imprecision. Fortunately, emerging optical player tracking systems have the potential to enable a richer quantitative characterization of basketball performance, particularly defensive performance. Unfortunately, due to computational and methodological complexities, that potential remains unmet. This paper attempts to fill this void, combining spatial and spatio-temporal processes, matrix factorization techniques and hierarchical regression models with player tracking data to advance the state of defensive analytics in the NBA. For triatomic chemical reactions under single-collision conditions, we propose a new quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) approach to rotational-state distributions of particular interest in the quantum regime where only a few rotational states are available to the products. Our method is directly inspired from the amendments to be introduced in classical phase space theory (PST) in order to make it in exact agreement with quantum PST. The method is applied to the D$^+$ + H$_2$ and H$^+$ + D$_2$ reactions and the population of the rotational ground state is found to be in much closer agreement with the exact quantum one than the same population obtained by means of standard QCT calculations. The impact on the whole distribution is all the stronger as the number of available states is small. Last but not least, the shape of the distribution appears to be controlled to a large extent by three factors, respectively called parity, edge and rotational shift factors.

We present a clausal resolution-based method for normal multimodal logics of confluence, whose Kripke semantics are based on frames characterised by appropriate instances of the Church-Rosser property. Here we restrict attention to eight families of such logics. We show how the inference rules related to the normal logics of confluence can be systematically obtained from the parametrised axioms that characterise such systems. We discuss soundness, completeness, and termination of the method. In particular, completeness can be modularly proved by showing that the conclusions of each newly added inference rule ensures that the corresponding conditions on frames hold. Coal blending is a critically important process in the coal mining industry as it directly influences the number of product tonnes and the total revenue generated by a mine site. Coal blending represents a challenging and complex problem with numerous blending possibilities, multiple constraints and competing objectives. At many mine sites, blending decisions are made using heuristics that have been developed through experience or made by using computer assisted control algorithms or linear programming. While current blending procedures have achieved profitable outcomes in the past, they often result in a sub-optimal utilization of high quality coal. This sub-optimality has a considerable negative impact on mine site productivity as it can reduce the amount of lower quality ROM that is blended and sold. This article reviews the coal blending problem and discusses some of the difficult trade-offs and challenges that arise in trying to address this problem. We highlight some of the risks from making simplifying assumptions and the limitations of current software optimization systems. We conclude by explaining how the mining industry would significantly benefit from research and development into optimization algorithms and technologies that are better able to combine computer optimization algorithm capabilities with the important insights of engineers and quality control specialists.

Over a field of characteristic zero, we establish the homotopy invariance of the Nisnevich cohomology of homotopy invariant presheaves with oriented weak transfers, and the agreement of Zariski and Nisnevich cohomology for such presheaves. This generalizes a foundational result in Voevodsky's theory of motives. Turbulence and magnetic fields are expected to be important for regulating molecular cloud formation and evolution. However, their effects on subparsec to 100 parsec scales, leading to the formation of starless cores, is not well understood. We investigate the prestellar core structure morphologies obtained from analysis of the Herschel-SPIRE 350 $\mu$m maps of the Lupus I cloud. This distribution is first compared on a statistical basis to the large scale shape of the main filament. We find the distribution of the elongation position angle of the cores to be consistent with a random distribution, which means no specific orientation of the morphology of the cores is observed with respect to a large-scale filament shape model for Lupus I, or relative to a large-scale bent filament model. This distribution is also compared to the mean orientation of the large-scale magnetic fields probed at 350 $\mu$m with the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Telescope for Polarimetry (BLASTPol) during its 2010 campaign. Here again we do not find any correlation between the core morphology distribution and the average orientation of the magnetic fields on parsec scales. Our main conclusion is that the local filament dynamics - including secondary filaments that often run orthogonally to the primary filament - and possibly small-scale variations in the local magnetic field direction, could be the dominant factors for explaining the final orientation of each core., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

To compute solutions of sparse polynomial systems efficiently we have to exploit the structure of their Newton polytopes. While the application of polyhedral methods naturally excludes solutions with zero components, an irreducible decomposition of a variety is typically understood in affine space, including also those components with zero coordinates. For the problem of computing solution sets in the intersection of some coordinate planes, the direct application of a polyhedral method fails, because the original facial structure of the Newton polytopes may alter completely when selected variables become zero. Our new proposed method enumerates all factors contributing to a generalized permanent and toric solutions as a special case of this enumeration. An heuristic approach to compute strong Nash (Aumann) equilibria is presented. The method is based on differential evolution and three variants of a generative relation for strong Nash equilibria characterization. Numerical experiments performed on the minimum effort game for up to 150 players illustrate the efficiency of the approach. The advantages and disadvantages of each variant is discussed in terms of precision and running time.
