Wind energy has become increasingly important for meeting Europe's energy needs. While onshore wind expansion faces public acceptance problems, for offshore wind the European Commission has introduced ambitious goals to increase capacity from 15GW to 300GW in 2050. Incorporating more offshore wind electricity into the power grid may offer a more widely accepted way to satisfy Europe's energy demand. In particular, the North Sea region has large potential for offshore wind generation. However, to fully exploit the wind potential in the North Sea, the grid integration of offshore wind and floating wind turbines are vital, especially when onshore wind capacity and onshore grid expansion are constrained. For the grid integration, a meshed offshore grid can offer a viable alternative to the standard direct connection of offshore wind parks to the nearest point on land combined with point-to-point HVDC connections. In this paper, we investigate the benefits of having a meshed offshore grid in the North Sea and considering floating wind besides fixed-bottom wind installations. In our analysis, we look at eight different scenarios, where onshore wind potentials and onshore line expansion are limited, to explore the effects of low public acceptance. Our results demonstrate that the presence of an offshore grid can reduce total system costs by up to 2.6 bn Euro/a. In the scenarios with an offshore meshed grid, ~8% more offshore wind capacities are built compared to the scenarios without a meshed grid. Furthermore, the analysis shows that if onshore wind potentials are restricted, floating wind turbines play a key role and compensate for lacking onshore wind capacities.

Integrating renewable energy into the power grid requires intelligent risk-aware dispatch accounting for the stochastic availability of renewables. Toward achieving this goal, a robust DC optimal flow problem is developed in the present paper for power systems with a high penetration of wind energy. The optimal dispatch is obtained as the solution to a convex program with a suitable regularizer, which is able to mitigate the potentially high risk of inadequate wind power. The regularizer is constructed based on the energy transaction cost using conditional value-at-risk (CVaR). Bypassing the prohibitive high-dimensional integral, the distribution-free sample average approximation method is efficiently utilized for solving the resulting optimization problem. The European North Sea has a vast renewable energy potential and can be a powerhouse for Europe's energy transition. However, currently there is uncertainty about how much offshore wind energy can be integrated, whether offshore grids should be meshed and to what extent offshore hydrogen should play a role. To address these questions, we use the open-source energy system optimization model PyPSA-Eur to model a European carbon-neutral sector-coupled energy system in high spatial and temporal resolution. We let the model endogenously decide how much offshore wind is deployed and which infrastructure is used to integrate the offshore wind. We find that with point-to-point connections like we have today, 310 GW offshore wind can be integrated in the North Sea. However, if we allow meshed networks and hydrogen, we find that this can be raised to 420 GW with cost savings up to 15 billion euros per year. Furthermore, we only observe significant amounts of up to 75 GW of floating wind turbines in the North Sea if we have offshore hydrogen production. Generally, the model opts for offshore wind integration through a mix of both electricity and hydrogen infrastructure. However, the bulk of the offshore energy is transported as hydrogen, which is twice as much as the amount transported as electricity. Driven by global climate goals, an increasing amount of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is currently being installed worldwide. Especially in the context of offshore wind integration, hybrid AC/DC grids are considered to be the most effective technology to transmit this RES power over long distances. As hybrid AC/DC systems develop, they are expected to become increasingly complex and meshed as the current AC system. Nevertheless, there is still limited literature on how to optimize hybrid AC/DC topologies while minimizing the total power generation cost. For this reason, this paper proposes a methodology to optimize the steady-state switching states of transmission lines and busbar configurations in hybrid AC/DC grids. The proposed optimization model includes optimal transmission switching (OTS) and busbar splitting (BS), which can be applied to both AC and DC parts of hybrid AC/DC grids. To solve the problem, a scalable and exact nonlinear, non-convex model using a big M approach is formulated. In addition, convex relaxations and linear approximations of the model are tested, and their accuracy, feasibility, and optimality are analyzed. The numerical experiments show that a solution to the combined OTS/BS problem can be found in acceptable computation time and that the investigated relaxations and linearisations provide AC feasible results.

Machine learning (ML) methods have shown great potential for weather downscaling. These data-driven approaches provide a more efficient alternative for producing high-resolution weather datasets and forecasts compared to physics-based numerical simulations. Neural operators, which learn solution operators for a family of partial differential equations (PDEs), have shown great success in scientific ML applications involving physics-driven datasets. Neural operators are grid-resolution-invariant and are often evaluated on higher grid resolutions than they are trained on, i.e., zero-shot super-resolution. Given their promising zero-shot super-resolution performance on dynamical systems emulation, we present a critical investigation of their zero-shot weather downscaling capabilities, which is when models are tasked with producing high-resolution outputs using higher upsampling factors than are seen during training. To this end, we create two realistic downscaling experiments with challenging upsampling factors (e.g., 8x and 15x) across data from different simulations: the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Reanalysis version 5 (ERA5) and the Wind Integration National Dataset Toolkit (WTK). While neural operator-based downscaling models perform better than interpolation and a simple convolutional baseline, we show the surprising performance of an approach that combines a powerful transformer-based model with parameter-free interpolation at zero-shot weather downscaling. We find that this Swin-Transformer-based approach mostly outperforms models with neural operator layers, and suggest its use in future work as a strong baseline.

With an increasing share of the electricity grid relying on wind to provide generating capacity and energy, there is an expanding global need for historically accurate high-resolution wind data. Conventional downscaling methods for generating these data have a high computational burden and require extensive tuning for historical accuracy. In this work, we present a novel deep learning-based spatiotemporal downscaling method, using generative adversarial networks (GANs), for generating historically accurate high-resolution wind resource data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting Reanalysis version 5 data (ERA5). We achieve results comparable in historical accuracy and spatiotemporal variability to conventional downscaling by training a GAN model with ERA5 low-resolution input and high-resolution targets from the Wind Integration National Dataset, while reducing computational costs over dynamical downscaling by two orders of magnitude. Spatiotemporal cross-validation shows low error and high correlations with observations and excellent agreement with holdout data across distributions of physical metrics. We apply this approach to downscale 30-km hourly ERA5 data to 2-km 5-minute wind data for January 2000 through December 2023 at multiple hub heights over Eastern Europe. Uncertainty is estimated over the period with observational data by additionally downscaling the members of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting Ensemble of Data Assimilations. Comparisons against observational data from the Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System and multiple wind farms show comparable performance to the CONUS validation. Despite ambitious offshore wind targets in the U.S. and globally, offshore grid planning guidance remains notably scarce, contrasting with well-established frameworks for onshore grids. This gap, alongside the increasing penetration of offshore wind and other clean-energy resources in onshore grids, highlights the urgent need for a coordinated planning framework. Our paper describes a multi-objective, multistage generation, storage and transmission expansion planning model to facilitate efficient and resilient large-scale adoption of offshore wind power. Recognizing regulatory emphasis and, in some cases, requirements to consider externalities, this model explicitly accounts for negative externalities: greenhouse gas emissions and local emission-induced air pollution. Utilizing an 8-zone ISO-NE test system and a 9-zone PJM test system, we explore grid expansion sensitivities such as impacts of optimizing Points of Interconnection (POIs) versus fixed POIs, negative externalities, and consideration of extreme operational scenarios resulting from offshore wind integration. Our results indicate that accounting for negative externalities necessitates greater upfront investment in clean generation and storage (balanced by lower expected operational costs). Optimizing POIs could significantly reshape offshore topology or POIs, and lower total cost. Finally, accounting for extreme operational scenarios typically results in greater operational costs and sometimes may alter onshore line investment.

In this paper, we suggest that reserves must be computed dynamically to account for wind power volatility. We formalize the notion of dynamic reserves in support of sequential Day-Ahead-Market (DAM) and Real-Time-Market (RTM) clearing and discuss several ways of accounting for wind power uncertainties. Three different wind integration protocols are considered and their impact on stakeholders, and, notably, on the need for dynamic reserves is analyzed. An optimal strategy is proposed which requires the least reserve as long as the bids are truthful and implementable with high confidence. This can be checked by the existing market monitor and/or by a separate risk buro. The increasing demand of large scale wind integration in the conventional power system brings a lot of challenges. One of them is the stability of the power system when subjected to a large disturbance, such as a fault. This paper proposes a probabilistic risk-based framework for computing a global instability index, incorporating angle, voltage, and frequency stability, for a large disturbance. Moreover, the impact of high wind penetration on this index is also observed. Case studies and associated simulations are conducted on the IEEE 39-bus test system using DIgSILENT PowerFactory software. The results show that higher penetration of wind generation enhances the global stability of the power system. Moreover, the impact of changing system generation and load is studied on the global instability index.

Clean, multi-carrier Offshore Energy Hubs (OEHs) may become pivotal for efficient offshore wind power generation and distribution. In addition, OEHs may provide decarbonised energy supply for maritime transport, oil and gas recovery, and offshore farming while also enabling conversion and temporary storage of liquefied decarbonised energy carriers for export. Here, we investigate the role of OEHs in the transition of the Norwegian continental shelf energy system towards zero-emission energy supply. We develop a mixed-integer linear programming model for investment planning and operational optimisation to achieve decarbonisation at minimum costs. We consider clean technologies, including offshore wind, offshore solar, OEHs and subsea cables. We conduct sensitivity analysis on CO$_2$ tax, CO$_2$ budget and the capacity of power from shore. The results show that (a) a hard carbon cap is necessary for stimulating a zero-emission offshore energy system; (b) offshore wind integration and power from shore can more than halve current emissions, but OEHs with storage are necessary for zero-emission production and (c) at certain CO$_2$ tax levels, the system with OEHs can potentially reduce CO$_2$ emissions by 50% and energy losses by 10%, compared to a system with only offshore renewables, gas turbines and power from shore.

PowerDynamics.jl is an Open-Source library for dynamic power grid modeling built in the latest scientific programming language, Julia. It provides all the tools necessary to analyze the dynamical stability of power grids with high share of renewable energy. In contrast to conventional tools, it makes full use of the simplicity and generality that Julia combines with highly-optimized just-in-time compiled Code. Additionally, its ecosystem provides DifferentialEquations.jl, a high-performance library for solving differential equations with built-in solvers and interfaces to industrial grade solvers like Sundials. PowerDynamics.jl provides a multitude of dynamics for different node/bus-types, e.g. rotating masses, droop-control in inverters, and is able to explicitly model time delays of inverters. Furthermore, it includes realistic models of fluctuations from renewable energy sources. In this paper, we demonstrate how to use PowerDynamics.jl for the IEEE 14-bus distribution grid feeder.

A challenge for renewable and hybrid power systems is the dynamically stable integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES). This paper specifically investigates the influence of intermittent RES and measurement delays from power electronic resources on frequency stability. In addition it presents an Open-Source framework to undertake dynamic RES modeling. First, for local intermittent fluctuations in lossy distribution grids I find a remarkable and subtle but robust interplay of dynamical and topological properties, which is largely absent for lossless grids. Second, I show how delays may induce resonance catastrophes and how the existence of critical delays sets an upper limit for measurement times. Further, I investigate whether centralized vs. decentralized power production, for different grid topologies, changes this behavior. Third, the code used for producing the above results is in the process of being published as an open-source Software framework called PowerDynamics.jl being developed in the programming language Julia. It will cover the rich novel dynamics caused by the integration of RES with the implementation of Differential Algebraic (DAEs), Delayed Differential (DDEs) and Stochastic Differential Algebraic Equations (SDAEs). Building the conditional probability distribution of wind power forecast errors benefits both wind farms (WFs) and independent system operators (ISOs). Establishing the joint probability distribution of wind power and the corresponding forecast data of spatially correlated WFs is the foundation for deriving the conditional probability distribution. Traditional parameter estimation methods for probability distributions require the collection of historical data of all WFs. However, in the context of multi-regional interconnected grids, neither regional ISOs nor WFs can collect the raw data of WFs in other regions due to privacy or competition considerations. Therefore, based on the Gaussian mixture model, this paper first proposes a privacy-preserving distributed expectation-maximization algorithm to estimate the parameters of the joint probability distribution. This algorithm consists of two original methods: (1) a privacy-preserving distributed summation algorithm and (2) a privacy-preserving distributed inner product algorithm. Then, we derive each WF's conditional probability distribution of forecast error from the joint one. By the proposed algorithms, WFs only need local calculations and privacy-preserving neighboring communications to achieve the whole parameter estimation. These algorithms are verified using the wind integration data set published by the NREL.

This paper presents a novel data-driven technique based on the spatiotemporal pattern network (STPN) for energy/power prediction for complex dynamical systems. Built on symbolic dynamic filtering, the STPN framework is used to capture not only the individual system characteristics but also the pair-wise causal dependencies among different sub-systems. For quantifying the causal dependency, a mutual information based metric is presented. An energy prediction approach is subsequently proposed based on the STPN framework. For validating the proposed scheme, two case studies are presented, one involving wind turbine power prediction (supply side energy) using the Western Wind Integration data set generated by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for identifying the spatiotemporal characteristics, and the other, residential electric energy disaggregation (demand side energy) using the Building America 2010 data set from NREL for exploring the temporal features. The increasing integration of wind generation is accompanied with a growing concern about secure and reliable power system operation. Due to the intermittent nature of wind, the base-load units need to cycle significantly more than they were designed for, resulting in reduced life cycle and increased costs. Therefore, it is becoming necessary for wind turbines to take part in frequency control, and reduce the need for additional ancillary services provided by conventional generators. In this paper, we propose an optimised operation strategy for the wind farms. In this strategy, we maximise the kinetic energy of wind turbines by an optimal combination of the rotor speed and the pitch angle. We exploit the wake interaction in a wind farm, and de-load some of the up-wind turbines. We show that the kinetic energy accumulated in the rotating masses of the WTs can be increased compared to the base case without compromising efficiency of the wind farm. In a specific system, we show that by implementing this strategy, and injecting the stored kinetic energy of the WTs' rotors into the system during a frequency dip, we can delay the system frequency nadir up to 30 s., Comment: Presented in the 13th Wind Integration Workshop Berlin, Nov 11 - 13 2014

Wind integration in power grids is very difficult, essentially because of the uncertain nature of wind speed. Forecasting errors on output from wind turbines may have costly consequences. For instance, power might be bought at highest price to meet the load. On the other hand, in case of surplus, power may be wasted. Energy storage facility may provide some recourse against the uncertainty on wind generation. Because of the sequential nature of power scheduling problems, stochastic dynamic programming is often used as solution method. However, this scheme is limited to very small networks by the so-called curse of dimensionality. To face such limitations, several approximate approaches have been proposed. We analyze the management of a network composed of conventional power units as well as wind turbines through approximate dynamic programming. We consider a general power network model with ramping constraints on the conventional generators. We use generalized linear programming techniques to linearize the problems. We test the algorithm on several networks of different sizes and report results about the computation time. We also carry out comparisons with classical dynamic programming on a small network. The results show the algorithm seems to offer a fair trade-off between solution time and accuracy.

Wind is becoming an increasingly significant source of energy in modern power generation. Amongst existing technologies, Variable Speed Wind Turbines (VSWT) equipped with Double Fed Induction Generators (DFIG) is widely deployed. Consequently, power systems are now experiencing newer power flow patterns and operating conditions. This paper investigates the impact of a DFIG based Wind Farm (WF) on the stability of electromechanical oscillations. This is achieved by performing modal analysis to evaluate the stability of a two-area power network when subjected to different wind penetration levels and different geographical installed locations. The approach via eigenvalues analysis involves the design of voltage and Supplementary Damping Controllers (SDCs) that contribute to network damping. The effect of Power System Stabilizer (PSS) is also examined for several network conditions.
