The purpose of this paper is to make clear the difference between rigid and undeformable bodies in Relativity. The error of confusing these two concepts has survived up to the present day treatises. The purpose of this work is to present some basic concepts about the non-linear sigma model in a simple and direct way. We start with showing the bosonic model and the Wess-Zumino-Witten term, making some comments about its topological nature, and its association with the torsion. It is also shown that to cancel the quantum conformal anomaly the model should obey the Einstein equations. We provide a quick introduction about supersymmetry in chapter 2 to help the understanding the supersymmetric extension of the model. In the last chapter we present the supersymmetric model and its equations of motion. We study the gravi-dilaton field of a Schwarzschild black hole pierced by a thin cosmic string in both massless and massive dilatonic gravity. We conclude that in the thin vortex approximation the string's spacetime is asymptotically flat with a conical deficit angle and that the inertial mass of the black hole is different from the gravitational one. One of the main activities in science teaching, and in particular in Physics teaching, is not only the discussion of both modern problems and problems which solution is an urgent matter. It means that the picture of an active and alive science should be transmitted to the students, mainly to the College students. A central point in this matter is the issue which characterizes the Fundamental Laws of Nature. In this work we emphasize that this sort of laws may exist in areas which are different from those usually considered. In this thesis, we use some methods of theory of stochastic process to approach turbulence in fluid dynamics. We discuss the Kolmogorov model for fully developed homogeneous turbulence, some recent analytical results to the 1-D Burgers' equation approach turbulence. In this thesis the Bohm-de Broglie interpretation of quantum mechanics is applied to canonical quantum gravity. It is shown that, irrespective of any regularization or choice of factor ordering of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, the unique relevant quantum effect which does not break spacetime is the change of its signature from lorentzian to euclidean. The other quantum effects are either trivial or break the four-geometry of spacetime. A Bohm-de Broglie picture of quantum geometrodynamics is constructed, which allows the investigation of these latter structures. For instance, it is shown that any real solution of the Wheeler-De Witt equation yields a generate four-geometry compatible with the strong gravity limit of General Relativity and the Carroll group. We prove that quantum geometrodynamics in the Bohm-de Broglie interpretation is consistent for any quantum potential. We have done a robust statistical study of the behaviour of color profiles for 257 Sbc galaxies, having determined (B-V) and (U-B) color gradients, as well as color indices of bulges and disks separately. Applying a bidimensional decomposition technique to model the brightness profiles of bulges and disks, we obtained characteristic structural parameters for 39 galaxies. Among the main results obtained, we point out: 65% of the galaxies have negative color gradients (reddish inward), 25% have no gradients, and 10% show positive gradients; galaxies that show no color gradients tend to be barred; we confirm the correlation between the color indices of bulges and disks; the absence of correlation between color and metallicity gradients suggests that the excess of barred galaxies with zero or positive color gradients reflects a difference in the behaviour of the mean age of the stellar population along barred and unbarred galaxies; galaxies with zero or positive color gradients show a slight tendency of having larger bulges, with a greater central concentration of light, and we confirm the correlation between the scale lengths of bulges and disks. These results are compatible and favourable to the secular evolutionary scenario, in which stellar bars induce radial mass fluxes to the central regions of galaxies. The sciences of complexity present some recurrent themes: the emergence of qualitatively new behaviors in dissipative systems out of equilibrium, the aparent tendency of complex system to lie at the border of phase transitions and bifurcation points, a historical dynamics which present punctuated equilibrium, a tentative of complementing Darwinian evolution with certain ideas of progress (understood as increase of computational power) etc. Such themes, indeed, belong to a long scientific and philosophical tradiction and, curiously, appear already in the work of Frederick Engels at the 70's of the XIX century. So, the apparent novelity of the sciences of complexity seems to be not situated in its fundamental ideas, but in the use of mathematical and computational models for illustrate, test and develop such ideas. In this paper we apply the Symplectic Projectors Method to gauge theories with second class constraints in various space-time dimensions. The conclusion is that this method is equivalent to the standard quantization methods. Although it suffers from some limitations since its applicability is restricted to some simpler situation when one is not interested in full information provided by the BRST, our analysis shows that it is worthwhile to investigate this method further. We relate Newton's Second Law with the Second Law of Thermodynamics through the analysis of a simple model introducing a dynamic pressure concept. Hooke's Law is analyzed taking the Second Law of Thermodynamics into consideration. It is shown that the energy of a spring isn't always 1/2 k xx - this value is actually the energy of the spring plus the energy of the atmosphere that surrounds it. On a quasi-isentropic aproximation in which the dynamic force is approximately the same as the static force, k is not a constant. Only by considering an ideal spring where k is constant and only on a static regime, can we say the energy is 1/2 k xx. For any dynamic regime of such an ideal spring, the energy of the spring is a function of its temperature and therefore is different from 1/2 k xx. If any given mass is moving attached to an ideal spring, the movement will eventually cease even if such movement occurs in vacuum. The dynamic force is not the static force kx. We analyse the acceleration of a mass with a simple structure taking into account Thermodynamics. Two situations are analysed. The first one for the application of a localized force to a point of the mass. The second one for the application of a force to the entire mass. The two situations are not equivalent. Temperature is introduced as a derived concept from energy and entropy. We consider two sub-systems in equilibrium for several configurations. The equality of temperature of the sub-systems is obtained from the equilibrium condition. The isothermal transformation is defined for several configurations and from this definition we obtain the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. We apply the analysis to the ideal gas. Is it allowed, in the context of the Lagrange multiplier formalism, to assume that nonholonomic constraints are already in effect while setting up Lagrange's function? This procedure is successfully applied in a recent book [L. N. Hand and J. D Finch, {\it Analytical Mechanics}] to the problem of the rolling penny, but it does not work in general, as we show by means of a counterexample. The simultaneous study of deformation and heat transmission in a bar was ignored for about 150 years. The traditional Fourier equation just allows to study the evolution of temperature in a undeformable bar. The search for its relativistic variant is a task which must fail because in Relativity there are no undeformable bars. Rigid bodies, in the sense as rigid as possible, are deformables. English version of abstract: The dynamic optimization problems treated by the calculus of variations are usually solved with the help of the 2nd order Euler-Lagrange differential equations. These equations are, generally speaking, nonlinear, and very hard to solve. One way to address the problem is to obtain conservation laws of lower order than those of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations. While in Physics and Economics the question of existence of conservation laws is treated in a rather natural way, because the application itself suggest the conservation laws (e.g., conservation of energy, income/health law), from a strictly mathematical point of view, given a problem of the calculus of variations, it is not obvious how one might derive a conservation law or, for that matter, if it even has a conservation law. The question we address is thus to develop computational facilities, based on a systematic method, which permits to identify functionals that have conservation laws. The central result we use is the celebrated Noether's theorem. This theorem links conservation laws with the invariance properties of the problem (with symmetries), and provides an algorithm for finding conservation laws. Thus the problem is reduced to the one of finding the variational symmetries. We show how a Computer Algebra System can help to find the symmetries and the conservation laws in the calculus of variations. We perform simulations based on the Penna model for biological ageing, now with the purpose of studying sympatric speciation, that is, the division of a single species into two or more populations, reproductively isolated, but without any physical barrier separating them. For that we introduce a new kind of competition among the individuals, using a modified Verhulst factor. The new competition depends on some specific phenotypic characteristic of each individual, which is represented by a pair of bitstrings. These strings are read in parallel and have no age structure. In this way, each individual genome consists of two parts. The first one has an age-structure and is related to the appearance of inherited diseases; the second part is not structured and takes into account the competition for the available resources. We also introduce sexual selection into the model, making use of another non-structured and independent pair of bitstrings. In this thesis we present three different models; two of them use, besides the competition, a sudden change in the ecology to obtain speciation. They were motivated by the speciation process observed in the Darwin finches, a family of birds that inhabits the Galapagos Islands, and also by that observed in the cichlids, a family of fish that lives in the Nicaragua Lakes and in the Vitoria Lake, in Africa. We show in details the four quantum key distribution protocols which initiated the important field of quantum cryptography, using an accessible language for undergraduate students. We begin presenting the BB84 protocol, which uses polarization states of photons in order to transmit cryptographic keys. Thereupon we show the E91 protocol, whose security is based on the use of singlet states to generate a random sequence of bits. We end the paper with the BBM92 and the B92 protocol. This dissertation aims at studying the braneworld models in the context proposed by Randall and Sundrum. The focus is on the spin-0 perturbations in the Kerr space-time as a 4-dimensional braneworld. The work deals the main aspects of Einstein General Relativity as well as perturbations of black holes metrics. We also review the Randall-Sundrum models and their motivations and attempts to describe braneworld black holes. Research on black holes and their physical proprieties has been active on last 90 years. With the appearance of the String Theory and the Braneworld models as alternative descriptions of our Universe, the interest on black holes, in these context, increased. In this work we studied black holes in Braneworld models. A class of spherically symmetric black holes is investigaded as well its stability under general perturbations. Thermodynamic proprieties and quasi-normal modes are discussed. The black holes studied are the SM (zero mass) and CFM solutions, obtained by Casadio {\it et al.} and Bronnikov {\it et al.}. The geometry of bulk is unknown. However the Campbell-Magaard Theorem guarantees the existence of a 5-dimensional solution in the bulk whose projection on the brane is the class of black holes considered. They are stable under scalar perturbations. Quasi-normal modes were observed in both models. The tail behavior of the perturbations is the same. The entropy upper bound of a body absorved by the black holes studied was calculated. In the present work we shall describe and apply the techniques of the Renormalization Group - based in data rescaling and operator renormalizing - and of Homogenization - that substitutes, in a certain limit, a periodically inhomogeneous medium by a homogeneous one - for the study of asymptotic behavior of solutions of PDE's. One class of problems studied in this dissertation consists of nonlinear, diffusive differential equations with periodic coefficients, that supposedly model the diffusion in a heterogeneous medium. Our study of these problems involves arguments originated from the two techniques described above. This makes, in certain sense, a connection between both of them. Another class of problems studied here consists of nonlinear, diffusive equations with time dependent coefficients, originated from montecarlo simulation of the asymptotic behavior of the averaged solutions of stochastic differential equations modeling the phenomenon of two-phase flow in porous media. Using the Renormalization Group we shall classify the problems in accordance with their qualitative behavior. This classification will be verified numerically. We shall also study the curve of phase transition that separates asymptotic regimes predominantly linear and nonlinear. The one-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation is investigated with the most general Lorentz structure for the external potentials. The analysis of the scattering of particles in a step potential with an arbitrary mixing of vector and scalar couplings reveals that the scalar coupling contributes for increasing the threshold energy for the particle-antiparticle pair production. Furthermore, it is shown that the pair production is only feasible whether the vector coupling exceeds the scalar one. An apparent paradox concerning the localization of a particle in an arbitrarily small region of space, due to the presence of the scalar coupling, is solved by introducing the concept of effective Compton wavelength., Comment: 12 pages, in Portuguese

Some nonperturbative aspects of Euclidean Yang-Mills theories in four dimensions, quantized in the Landau gauge, are analytically studied. In particular, we investigate the dynamical mass generation for the gluons due to the presence of dimension two condensates. This study is performed in the framework of the local composite operator technique in the case of the Yang-Mills action as well as in the case of the Gribov-Zwanziger action. We determine the local entropy of the free energy of the quantized open bosonic string in Minkowski spacetime with the most general boundary conditions. We formulate a finite temperature theory of the thermal closed string excitations in anti-de Sitter spacetime within the TFD approach. (English) In a previous work [Nonlinearity, 20:2271-2287, 2007; arXiv:math/0703895] it is investigated, by means of computational simulations, shapes of nonconvex bodies that maximize resistance to its motion on a rarefied medium, considering that bodies are moving forward and at the same time slowly rotating. Here the previous results are improved: we obtain a two-dimensional geometric shape that confers to the body a resistance very close to the supremum value (R=1.4965<1.5). ----- Resumo (Portuguese) Um corpo bidimensional, apresentando um ligeiro movimento rotacional, desloca-se num meio rarefeito de part\'iculas que colidem com ele de uma forma perfeitamente el\'astica. The one-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation is investigated with the most general Lorentz structure for the external potentials. The analysis and calculation of the reflection and transmission coefficients for the scattering of particles in a square potential, with an arbitrary mixing of vector and scalar couplings, reveal circumstances which conflict with the predictions from nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. It is shown that such anomalous scatterings are mediated by antiparticle bound states, even if the incident particles have low energies. The analysis of bound states also reveals surprising results, remarkable is the inhibition of the Schiff-Snyder-Weinberg effect due to the presence of a scalar coupling., Comment: In Portuguese

We elaborate a detailed study of certain aspects of (a version of) the AdS/CFT correspondence, conjectured by Maldacena and Witten, between quantum field theories in a gravitational background given by an asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AAdS) spacetime, and conformally covariant quantum field theories in the latter's conformal infinity (in the sense of Penrose), aspects such that: (a) are independent from (the pair of) specific models in Quantum Field Theory, and (b) susceptible to a recast in a mathematically rigorous mould. We adopt as a starting point the theorem demonstrated by Rehren in the context of Local Quantum Physics (also known as Algebraic Quantum Field Theory) in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes, called algebraic holography or Rehren duality. The main body of the present work consists in extending Rehren's result to a reasonably general class of d-dimensional AAdS spacetimes (d>3), scrutinizing how the properties of such an extension are weakened and/or modified as compared to AdS spacetime, and probing how non-trivial gravitational effects manifest themselves in the conformal infinity's quantum theory. First and second order corrections for the scattering of different types of particles by a weak gravitational field, treated as an external field, are calculated. These computations indicate a violation of the Equivalence Principle: to first order, the cross-sections are spin dependent; if the calculations are pushed to the next order, they become dependent upon energy as well. Interesting enough, the aforementioned results are equivalent to those obtained by means of the so-called Effective Theory of Gravitation, in the limit in which one of the masses is much greater than all the other energies involved. It is the aim of this work to identify and illustrate the potential and weaknesses of the computer algebra system Maple in the area of the Calculus of Variations: a classical area of mathematics that studies the methods for finding maximum and minimum values of functionals of integral type. Variational problems are usually solved with the help of the necessary optimality conditions of Euler-Lagrange, which are, in general, nonlinear and difficult second order differential equations to be solved. We show how the computer algebra system Maple can be useful in the determination and resolution of these equations. We will also present the solution to the celebrated brachistochrone problem from the point of view of the calculus of variations and the Maple system, and a reformulation of the classical problem obtained by restricting the class of admissible functions., Comment: manuscript in Portuguese

Time scales are a model of time, where the continuous and the discrete time cases are considered and merged into the same framework. This work deals with the analysis of cylindrically symmetric and stationary space-times $\mathcal{C}_{t}$ with closed timelike curves. The equation of motion describing the evolution of a massive scalar field in a $\mathcal{C}_{t}$ space-time is obtained. A class of space-times with closed timelike curves describing cosmic strings and cylinders is studied in detail. In such space-times, both massive particles as well as photons can reach the non-causal region. Geodesics and closed timelike curves are calculated and investigated. We have observed that massive particles and photons describe, essentially, two kinds of trajectories: confined orbits and scattering states. The analysis of the light cones show us clearly the intersection between future and past inside the non-causal region. Exact solutions for the equation of motion of massive scalar field propagating in cosmic strings and cylinder space-times are presented. Quasinormal modes for the scalar field have been calculated in static and rotating cosmic cylinders. We found unstable modes in the rotating cases. Rotating as well as static cosmic strings, i.e., without regular interior solutions, do not display quasinormal modes for the scalar field. Scientific education and divulgation not only amplify people's vocabulary and repertory of scientific concepts but, at the same time, promote the diffusion of certain conceptual and cognitive metaphors. Here we make some hypothesis about this process, proposing a classification in terms of visible, invisible, basic and derived metaphors. We focus our attention in contemporary and classical physics metaphors applied to psychological and socio-economical phenomena, and we study two exemplar cases through an exhaustive exam of the online content of large Brazilian journalistic portals. In this dissertation, we study the implications generated by the Lorentz breaking symmetry in quantum electrodynamics. We analyze fermions interacting with an electromagnetic field in the contexts of quantum mechanics and make radiative corrections. In quantum mechanics, the terms of the Lorentz breaking symmetry were treated as perturbations to the Dirac equation, and their expected values were obtained in a vacuum. In the radiative corrections, the Lorentz breaking symmetry was introduced in this interaction for the Chern-Simons like term could be induced in (3 +1) dimensions. In this work, considering a numerical procedure developed to solve a system of coupled nonlinear complex differential equations, which describes the solitons propagation in dielectric optical fibers, we optimize the numerical processing time, in relation to the relaxation parameter of the procedure, for relevant groups of values of the dielectric variables of the optic fiber. The discovery of many particles, especially in the 50's, when the firsts accelerators appeared, caused the searching for a model that would describe in a simple form the whole of known particles. The Quark Model, based in the mathematical structures of group theory, provided in the beginning of the 60's a simplified description of hadronic matter already known, proposing that three particles, called quarks, would originate all the observed hadrons. This model was able to preview the existence of particles that were later detected, confirming its consistency. Extensions of the Quark Model were made in the beginning of the 70's, focusing in describing observed particles that were excited states of the fundamental particles and others that presented new quantum numbers (flavors). Recently, exotic states as tetraquarks and pentaquarks types, also called multiquarks systems, previewed by the model, were observed, what renewed the interest in the way as quarks are confined inside the hadrons. This work proposes a mathematical model on the water quality for Igap\'o I Lake, located in Londrina, Paran\'a. A qualitative analysis on the pollution of the lake is carried out through numerical simulations which provide informations for the understanding of the processes involved. For the hydrodynamic flow of the lake, a horizontal two-dimensional model is considered. The hydrodynamic velocity field is simulated by the Navier-Stokes and pressure equations, supposing an incompressible newtonian fluid. This hydrodynamic velocity field is inserted in the reactive-transport model. The reactive part of this model considers only the carbon-nitrogen cycle, described by the QUAL2E model. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the numerical simulations conducted in function of the deficit of dissolved oxygen, of the biochemical oxygen demand and of the load of pollutants provided a better understanding of the hydrology and of the water quality in the Igap\'o I Lake., Comment: In Portuguese. We develop and evaluate a numerical procedure for a system of nonlinear differential equations, which describe the propagation of solitons into ideal dielectric optical fibers. This problem has analytical solutions known. The numerical solutions of the system is implemented by the finite element method, using methods of stabilization such as Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) and Consistent Approximate Upwind (CAU). Comparing the numerical and analytical solutions, it was found that the numerical procedure adequately describes the dynamics of this system., Comment: In Portuguese
