Coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations for paraxial optics with two circular polarizations of light in a defocusing Kerr medium with anomalous dispersion coincide in form with the Gross-Pitaevskii equations for a binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of cold atoms in the phase separation regime. In this case, the helical symmetry of an optical waveguide corresponds to rotation of the transverse potential confining the BEC. The "centrifugal force" considerably affects the propagation of a light wave in such a system. A new type of long-lived solitary structures for paraxial optics with two circular polarizations of light in a homogeneous defocusing Kerr medium with an anomalous group velocity dispersion has been revealed numerically in the coupled nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations. A found hybrid three-dimensional soliton is a vortex ring against the background of a plane wave in one of the components, and the core of the vortex is filled with another component nonuniformly in azimuth angle. A mathematical analogy between paraxial optics with two circular polarizations of light in a defocusing Kerr medium with positive dispersion, binary Bose-Einstein condensates of cold atoms in the phase separation regime, and hydrodynamics of two immiscible compressible liquids can help in theoretical search for unknown three-dimensional coherent optical structures. In this work, transversely trapped (by a smooth profile of the refractive index) light beams are considered and new numerical examples are presented, including a ``floating drop'', a precessing longitudinal optical vortex with an inhomogeneous profile of filling with the second component, and the combination of a drop and a vortex filament. Filled vortices that are perpendicular to the beam axis and propagate at large distances have also been simulated. V. P. A trapped Bose--Einstein-condensed mixture of two types of cold atoms with significantly different masses has been simulated numerically within the coupled Gross--Pitaevskii equations. A configuration consisting of a vortex-free core and a shell penetrated by quantum vortices is possible in the phase separation regime. The dynamic properties of vortices in the shell are determined by several parameters. Physically implementable parametric domains corresponding to long-lived strongly nonstationary systems of several vortices attached to the core have been sought. We calculate the fourth cluster coefficients of the homogeneous unitary spin 1/2 Fermi gas as functions of the internal-state mass ratio, over intervals constrained by the 3- or 4-body Efimov effect. For this we use our 2016 conjecture (validated for equal masses by Hou and Drut in 2020) in a numerically efficient formulation making the sum over angular momentum converge faster, which is crucial at large mass ratio. The mean cluster coefficient, relevant for equal chemical potentials, is not of constant sign and increases rapidly close to the Efimovian thresholds. We also get the fourth virial coefficients, which we find to be very poor indicators of interaction-induced 4-body correlations. We obtain analytically for all $n$ the cluster coefficients of order $n$ + 1 for an infinity-mass impurity fermion, matching the conjecture for $n=3$. Finally, in a harmonic potential, we predict a non-monotonic behavior of the 3 + 1 cluster coefficient with trapping frequency, near mass ratios where this coefficient vanishes in the homogeneous case., Comment: Published version in English (28 pages) and in French (28 pages)

Spin-squeezing is a well-established "quantum technology", where well-designed correlations in an ensemble of two-level systems reduce the statistical uncertainty of spectroscopic experiments. This paper reviews some important advances in the field, with emphasis on the author's contributions concerning in particular the fundamental limits imposed by decoherence. A spatially inhomogeneous, trapped two-component Bose-Einstein condensate of cold atoms in the phase separation mode has been numerically simulated. It has been demonstrated for the first time that the surface tension between the components makes possible the existence of drops of a denser phase floating on the surface of a less dense phase. Depending on the harmonic trap anisotropy and other system parameters, a stable equilibrium of the drop is achieved either at the poles or at the equator. A two-component Bose-Einstein condensate of cold atoms with a strong intercomponent repulsion leading to the spatial separation of the components has been numerically studied. Configurations with a multiple quantized vortex in one component, where the vortex core is filled with the other component, are considered. The effective radius of the core can exceed the width of the transition layer between components, and then an analogy with a filled cylindrical vortex in the classical hydrodynamics of two immiscible ideal fluids appears. This analogy allows one to analyze the longitudinal "sausage" instability and the transverse instability of the filled vortex in the condensate caused by the "tangential discontinuity," as well as the stable regime in the parametric gap between them. We consider a 3D homogeneous superfluid at low temperature $T$ with 2 types of excitations, gapless phonons with a linear dispersion relation at low wavenumber, and gapped quasiparticles with a quadratic dispersion relation around extrema. We calculate the scattering amplitude of a phonon on a quasiparticle to leading order in $T$ for all subsonic quasiparticle velocities, with a $S$-matrix formalism between exact asymptotic states dressed by virtual phonons. We then characterize the erratic motion of the quasiparticle in the superfluid due to its unceasing collisions with thermal phonons through mean force $F(k)$, longitudinal and transverse $k$-dependent momentum diffusion coefficients, and spatial diffusion coefficient. At the minimum location $k_0$ of the dispersion relation, where the velocity vanishes, $F(k)$ varies linearly with velocity with an isotropic friction coefficient; if $k_0=0$, the momentum diffusion is also isotropic and $F(k_0)=0$; if $k_0>0$, it is not, and $F(k_0)$ is nonzero but subleading with respect to friction by one order in $T$. The velocity time correlation function, whose integral is the spatial diffusion coefficient, decays with the mean velocity damping rate if $k_0=0$; if $k_0>0$, it has a second exponential component, with an amplitude and a damping rate lower by a factor $\propto T$ (it is the velocity direction thermalization rate). We also characterize force and momentum diffusion close to the stability domain sonic edge. Our general expressions are expected to be exact to leading order in $T$. We illustrate them in the BCS approximation, for a fermionic quasiparticle (an unpaired fermion) in a superfluid of spin 1/2 fermions, realisable with cold atoms in flat bottom traps. The superfluid, pair condensed spin-1/2 Fermi gases are supposed to exhibit at nonzero wave vector a still unobserved collective excitation mode in their pair-breaking continuum. Using BCS theory at zero temperature and in the long wavelength limit, we predict that this mode is quantitatively observable (in frequency, width and spectral weight) in the response of a cold atom gas to a laser Bragg excitation, if one measures the perturbation induced on the order parameter modulus rather than on the density., Comment: published version, in English and in French

The pair-condensed unpolarized spin-$1/2$ Fermi gases have a collective excitation branch in their pair-breaking continuum (V.A. Andrianov, V.N. Popov, 1976). We study it at zero temperature, with the eigenenergy equation deduced from the linearized time-dependent BCS theory and extended analytically to the lower half complex plane through its branch cut, calculating both the dispersion relation and the spectral weights (quasiparticle residues) of the branch. In the case of BCS superconductors, so called because the effect of the ion lattice is replaced by a short-range electron-electron interaction, we also include the Coulomb interaction and we restrict ourselves to the weak coupling limit $\Delta/\mu\to 0^+$ ($\Delta$ is the order parameter, $\mu $ the chemical potential) and to wavenumbers $q=O(1/\xi)$ where $\xi$ is the size of a pair; when the complex energy $z_q$ is expressed in units of $\Delta$ and $q$ in units of $1/\xi$, the branch follows a universal law insensitive to the Coulomb interaction. In the case of cold atoms in the BEC-BCS crossover, only a contact interaction remains, but the coupling strength $\Delta/\mu$ can take arbitrary values, and we study the branch at any wave number. At weak coupling, we predict three scales, that already mentioned $q\approx 1/\xi$, that $q\approx(\Delta/\mu)^{-1/3}/\xi$ where the real part of the dispersion relation has a minimum and that $q\approx (\mu/\Delta)/\xi\approx k_{\rm F}$ ($k_{\rm F}$ is the Fermi wave number) where the branch reaches the edge of its existence domain. Near the point where the chemical potential vanishes on the BCS side, $\mu/\Delta\to 0^+$, where $\xi\approx k_{\rm F}$, we find two scales $q\approx(\mu/\Delta)^{1/2}/\xi$ and $q\approx 1/\xi$. In all cases, the branch has a limit $2\Delta$ and a quadratic start at $q=0$. These results were obtained for $\mu>0$, where the eigenenergy equation admits at least two branch points $\epsilon_a(q)$ and $\epsilon_b(q)$ on the positive real axis, and for an analytic continuation through the interval $[\epsilon_a(q),\epsilon_b(q)] $. We find new continuum branches by performing the analytic continuation through $[\epsilon_b(q),+\infty[$ or even, for $q$ low enough, where there is a third real positive branch point $\epsilon_c(q)$, through $[\epsilon_b(q),\epsilon_c(q)]$ and $[\epsilon_c(q),+\infty[$. On the BEC side $\mu<0$ not previously studied, where there is only one real positive branch point $ \epsilon_a(q)$, we also find new collective excitation branches under the branch cut $[\epsilon_a (q),+\infty[$. For $\mu>0$, some of these new branches have a low-wavenumber exotic hypoacoustic $z_q\approx q^{3/2}$ or hyperacoustic $z_q\approx q^{4/5}$ behavior. A condensate of pairs in an isolated, homogeneous, unpolarised, finite-size spin 1/2 Fermi gas at low nonzero temperature T, undergoes with time a phase change with a random component, due to coupling to the gas thermal phonons. With the quantum second Josephson relation relating the derivative of the condensate phase operator to the phonon occupation numbers, and linearised kinetic equations giving the evolution of occupation number fluctuations, we access the behaviour of the phase change variance at times much longer than the phonon collision time. The case of a convex phonon branch is similar to the Bose gas case: the leading collisional processes are the Beliaev-Landau 3-phonons processes, and the variance is the sum of a ballistic term and of a delayed diffusive term, whose analytical expressions are given in the thermodynamic limit. The concave case is more exotic. It is analysed at time scales $T^{-9}$, allowing one to restrict to 2 phonons $\rightarrow$ 2 phonons small-angle Landau-Khalatnikov processes. The total number of phonons is conserved and the phonon mean occupation numbers at equilibrium can exhibit a negative chemical potential, assumed isotropic. The phase change variance is then the sum of a ballistic term, of a diffusive term, of exotic subsubleading terms and of a constant term. The analytic expression of some of the corresponding coefficients is obtained, as well as the diverging leading behavior of the other ones when the phonon chemical potential tends to 0. When this chemical potential is 0, the variance sub-ballistic part becomes superdiffusive, with an exponent 5/3 and an exactly-known coefficient. For a nonzero infinitesimal phonon chemical potential, a law is found, interpolating between superdiffusive and diffusive phase spreading. We demonstrate the existence of a collective excitation branch in the pair-breaking continuum of superfluid Fermi gases and BCS superconductors. At zero temperature, we analytically continue the equation on the collective mode energy in Anderson's Random Phase Approximation or Gaussian fluctuations through its branch cut associated with the continuum, and obtain the full complex dispersion relation, including in the strong coupling regime. The branch exists as long as the chemical potential $\mu$ is positive and the wave number below $\sqrt{2m\mu}/\hbar$ (with m the fermion mass). In the long wavelength limit, the branch varies quadratically with the wave number, with a complex effective mass that we compute analytically for an arbitrary interaction strength., Comment: 6-7 pages, 4 figures, in English et en fran\c{c}ais

We study the condensate phase dynamics in a low-temperature equilibrium gas of weakly interacting bosons, harmonically trapped and isolated from the environment. We find that at long times, much longer than the collision time between Bogoliubov quasiparticles, the variance of the phase accumulated by the condensate grows with a ballistic term quadratic in time and a diffusive term affine in time. We give the corresponding analytical expressions in the limit of a large system, in the collisionless regime and in the ergodic approximation for the quasiparticle motion. When properly rescaled, they are described by universal functions of the temperature divided by the Thomas-Fermi chemical potential. The same conclusion holds for the mode damping rates. The present thesis deals with some properties of classical and quantum scalar fields in an inhomogeneous and/or time-dependent background, focusing on models where the latter can be described as a curved space-time with an event horizon. While naturally formulated in a gravitational context, such models extend to many physical systems with an effective Lorentz invariance at low energy. We shall see how this effective symmetry allows one to relate the behavior of perturbations in these systems to black-hole physics, what are its limitations, and in which sense results thus obtained are "analogous" to their general relativistic counterparts. The first chapter serves as a general introduction. A few notions from Einstein's theory of gravity are introduced and a derivation of Hawking radiation is sketched. The correspondence with low-energy systems is then explained through three important examples. The next four chapters each details one of the works completed during this thesis, updated and slightly reorganized to account for new developments which occurred after their publication. Liquid helium and spin-1/2 cold-atom Fermi gases both exhibit in their superfluid phase two distinct types of excitations, gapless phonons and gapped rotons or fermionic pair-breaking excitations. In the long wavelength limit, revising and extending Landau and Khalatnikov's theory initially developed for helium [ZhETF 19, 637 (1949)], we obtain universal expressions for three- and four-body couplings among these two types of excitations. We calculate the corresponding phonon damping rates at low temperature and compare them to those of a pure phononic origin in high-pressure liquid helium and in strongly interacting Fermi gases, paving the way to experimental observations., Comment: Augmented-corrected version in English (8 pages) and in French (9 pages)

The dynamics of interacting quantum vortices in a quasi-two-dimensional spatially inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate, whose equilibrium density vanishes at two points of the plane with a possible presence of an immobile vortex with a few circulation quanta at each point, has been considered in a hydrodynamic approximation. A special class of density profiles has been chosen, so that it proves possible to calculate analytically the velocity field produced by point vortices. The equations of motion have been given in a noncanonical Hamiltonian form. We study the interactions among phonons and the phonon lifetime in a pair-condensed Fermi gas in the BEC-BCS crossover in the collisionless regime. To compute the phonon-phonon coupling amplitudes we use a microscopic model based on a generalized BCS Ansatz including moving pairs, which allows for a systematic expansion around the mean field BCS approximation of the ground state. We show that the quantum hydrodynamic expression of the amplitudes obtained by Landau and Khalatnikov apply only on the energy shell, that is for resonant processes that conserve energy. The microscopic model yields the same excitation spectrum as the Random Phase Approximation, with a linear (phononic) start and a concavity at low wave number that changes from upwards to downwards in the BEC-BCS crossover. When the concavity of the dispersion relation is upwards at low wave number, the leading damping mechanism at low temperature is the Beliaev-Landau process 2 phonons $\leftrightarrow$ 1 phonon while, when the concavity is downwards, it is the Landau-Khalatnikov process 2 phonons $\leftrightarrow$ 2 phonons. In both cases, by rescaling the wave vectors to absorb the dependence on the interaction strength, we obtain a universal formula for the damping rate. This universal formula corrects and extends the original analytic results of Landau and Khalatnikov [ZhETF {\bf 19}, 637 (1949)] for the $2\leftrightarrow2$ processes in the downward concavity case. In the upward concavity case, for the Beliaev 1$\leftrightarrow$ 2 process for the unitary gas at zero temperature, we calculate the damping rate of an excitation with wave number $q$ including the first correction proportional to $q^7$ to the $q^5$ hydrodynamic prediction, which was never done before in a systematic way., Comment: in english (published version except for single column presentation, 44 pages) and in french (35 pages, double column)

We study the concavity of the dispersion relation $q\mapsto \omega\_{\mathbf{q}}$ of the bosonic excitations of a three-dimensional spin-$1/2$ Fermi gas in the Random Phase Approximation (RPA). In the limit of small wave numbers $q$ we obtain analytically the spectrum up to order $5$ in $q$. In the neighborhood of $q=0$, a change in concavity between the convex BEC limit and the concave BCS limit takes place at $\Delta/\mu\simeq0.869$ [$1/(k\_F a)\simeq-0.144$], where $a$ is the scattering length between opposite spin fermions, $k\_F$ is the Fermi wave number and $\Delta$ the gap according to BCS theory, and $\mu$ is the chemical potential. At that point the branch is concave due to a negative fifth-order term. Our results are supplemented by a numerical study which shows the evolution of the border between the zone of the $(q,\Delta)$ plane where $q\mapsto \omega\_{\mathbf{q}}$ is concave and the zone where it is convex., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, published version, in English and in French

In the free three-dimensional space, we consider a pair of identical $\uparrow$ fermions of some species or in some internal state, and a pair of identical $\downarrow$ fermions of another species or in another state. There is a resonant $s$-wave interaction (that is of zero range and infinite scattering length) between fermions in different pairs, and no interaction within the same pair. We study whether this $2+2$ fermionic system can exhibit (as the $3+1$ fermionic system) a four-body Efimov effect in the absence of three-body Efimov effect, that is the mass ratio $\alpha$ between $\uparrow$ and $\downarrow$ fermions and its inverse are both smaller than 13.6069{\ldots}. For this purpose, we investigate scale invariant zero-energy solutions of the four-body Schr\''odinger equation, that is positively homogeneous functions of the coordinates of degree {$s-7/2$}, where $s$ is a generalized Efimov exponent {that becomes purely imaginary in the presence of a four-body Efimov effect.} Using rotational invariance in momentum space, it is found that the allowed values of $s$ are such that $M(s)$ has a zero eigenvalue; here the operator $M(s)$, that depends on the total angular momentum $\ell$, acts on functions of two real variables (the cosine of the angle between two wave vectors and the logarithm of the ratio of their moduli), and we write it explicitly in terms of an integral matrix kernel. We have performed a spectral analysis of $M(s)$, analytical and for an arbitrary imaginary $s$ for the continuous spectrum, numerical and limited to $s = 0$ and $\ell \le 12$ for the discrete spectrum. We conclude that no eigenvalue of $M(0)$ crosses zero over the mass ratio interval $\alpha \in [1, 13.6069\ldots]$, even if, in the parity sector $(-1)^{\ell}$, the continuous spectrum of $M(s)$ has everywhere a zero lower border. As a consequence, there is no possibility of a four-body Efimov effect for the 2+2 fermions. We also enunciated a conjecture for the fourth virial coefficient of the unitary spin-$1/2$ Fermi gas,inspired from the known analytical form of the third cluster coefficient and involving the integral over the imaginary $s$-axis of $s$ times the logarithmic derivative of the determinant of $M(s)$ summed over all angular momenta.The conjectured value is in contradiction with the experimental results., Comment: final version in English (30 pages) and French translation by AI + human proofreading (32 pages)

It is generally assumed that a condensate of paired fermions at equilibrium is characterized by a macroscopic wavefunction with a well-defined, immutable phase. In reality, all systems have a finite size and are prepared at non-zero temperature; the condensate has then a finite coherence time, even when the system is isolated in its evolution and the particle number $N$ is fixed. The loss of phase memory is due to interactions of the condensate with the excited modes that constitute a dephasing environment. This fundamental effect, crucial for applications using the condensate of pairs' macroscopic coherence, was scarcely studied. We link the coherence time to the condensate phase dynamics, and we show with a microscopic theory that the time derivative of the condensate phase operator $\hat{\theta}\_0$ is proportional to a chemical potential operator that we construct including both the pair-breaking and pair-motion excitation branches. In a single realization of energy $E$, $\hat{\theta}\_0$ evolves at long times as $-2\mu\_{\rm mc}(E)t/\hbar$ where $\mu\_{\rm mc}(E)$ is the microcanonical chemical potential; energy fluctuations from one realization to the other then lead to a ballistic spreading of the phase and to a Gaussian decay of the temporal coherence function with a characteristic time $\propto N^{1/2}$. In the absence of energy fluctuations, the coherence time scales as $N$ due to the diffusive motion of $\hat{\theta}\_0$. We determine {\`a} la Landau the critical velocity $v\_c^{L}$ of a moving impurity in a Fermi superfluid, that is by restricting to the minimal excitation processes of the superfluid. $v\_c^{L}$ is then the minimal velocity at which these processes are energetically allowed. The Fermi superfluid actually exhibits two excitation branches~: one is the fermionic pair-breaking excitation, as predicted by BCS theory; the other one is bosonic and sets pairs into motion, as predicted by Anderson's RPA. $v\_c^{L}$ is the smallest of the two corresponding critical velocities $v\_{c,f}^{L}$ and $v\_{c,b}^{L}$. In the parameter space (superfluid interaction strength, fermion-to-impurity mass ratio), we identify two transition lines, corresponding to a discontinuity of the first-order and second-order derivatives of $v\_c^{L}$. These two lines meet in a triple point and split the plane in three domains. We briefly extend this analysis to the very recently realized case at ENS, where the moving object in the Fermi superfluid is a weakly interacting Bose superfluid of impurities, rather than a single impurity. For a Bose chemical potential much smaller than the Fermi energy, the topology of the transition lines is unaffected; a key result is that the domain $v\_c^{L}=c$, where $c$ is the sound velocity in the Fermi superfluid, is turned into a domain $v\_c^{L}=c+c\_B$, where $c\_B$ is the sound velocity in the Bose superfluid, with slightly shifted boundaries., Comment: final version, both in english and in french

We study in three dimensions the problem of a spatially homogeneous zero-temperature ideal Fermi gas of spin-polarized particles of mass $m$ perturbed by the presence of a single distinguishable impurity of mass $M$. The interaction between the impurity and the fermions involves only the partial $s$-wave through the scattering length $a$, and has negligible range $b$ compared to the inverse Fermi wave number $1/\kf$ of the gas. Through the interactions with the Fermi gas the impurity gives birth to a quasi-particle, which will be here a Fermi polaron (or more precisely a {\sl monomeron}). We consider the general case of an impurity moving with wave vector $\KK\neq\OO$: Then the quasi-particle acquires a finite lifetime in its initial momentum channel because it can radiate particle-hole pairs in the Fermi sea. A description of the system using a variational approach, based on a finite number of particle-hole excitations of the Fermi sea, then becomes inappropriate around $\KK=\mathbf{0}$. We rely thus upon perturbation theory, where the small and negative parameter $\kf a\to0^-$ excludes any branches other than the monomeronic one in the ground state (as e.g.\ the dimeronic one), and allows us a systematic study of the system. We calculate the impurity self-energy $\Sigma^{(2)}(\KK,\omega)$ up to second order included in $a$. Remarkably, we obtain an analytical explicit expression for $\Sigma^{(2)}(\KK,\omega)$ allowing us to study its derivatives in the plane $(K,\omega)$. These present interesting singularities, which in general appear in the third order derivatives $\partial^3 \Sigma^{(2)}(\KK,\omega)$. In the special case of equal masses, $M=m$, singularities appear already in the physically more accessible second order derivatives $\partial^2 \Sigma^{(2)}(\KK,\omega)$; using a self-consistent heuristic approach based on $\Sigma^{(2)}$ we then regularise the divergence of the second order derivative $\partial\_K^2 \Delta E(\KK)$ of the complex energy of the quasi-particle found in reference [C. Trefzger, Y. Castin, Europhys. Lett. {\bf 104}, 50005 (2013)] at $K=\kf$, and we predict an interesting scaling law in the neighborhood of $K=\kf$. As a by product of our theory we have access to all moments of the momentum of the particle-hole pair emitted by the impurity while damping its motion in the Fermi sea, at the level of Fermi's golden rule., Comment: final version in english and in french - version finale en anglais et en fran\c{c}ais
