Applications of Raman spectroscopy in bio-sensing and bio-detection were previously limited due to its low sensitivity resulting from weak Raman scattering. Over time, improvements in instrumentation and the discovery of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) have increased sensitivity and specificity for target analytes, making Raman spectroscopy a technique of choice for many applications, ranging from biomedical to environmental sensing. However, despite significant progress in the field, novel SERS substrates are still being synthesized and tested by researchers to achieve lower detection limits and increase the reproducibility of this technique. Accordingly, substrate materials have developed from traditional plasmonic materials, which provide primarily electromagnetic enhancements, to semiconductor materials that primarily rely on the chemical enhancement mechanism. A diverse body of research has equally explored combining these materials in a hybrid manner with variable results. Notable semiconductor materials include metal oxides ZnO and TiO2, which exhibit high flexibility and integration into SERS sensing designs to potentially enhance sensitivity and modify biocompatibility. In light of these recent developments, this review summarizes recent approaches to synthesize ZnO and TiO2SERS nanostructures and examines recent biological applications of these substrates. Over 60 papers were consulted to develop an overview of current synthesis approaches to integrating ZnO and TiO2into SERS substrates. A summary of various bio-detection applications and potential advancements in the field are presented.

This paper investigates voiding issues in the underfilling process of ball grid array (BGA) chip packages under various parameter settings such as chip conveyor speed, valve pressure, temperature, and dispense pattern complicate. The study identifies valve pressure as the primary cause of voiding in large quantity BGA chips, achieving 88.9% in accuracy, supported with the deformation of the valve nozzle. Additionally, the findings reveal that racing effects occurs due to asymmetry of the solder ball array arrangement with percentage difference between the TSAM BGA chips experiments and its simulation counterparts in the range of 0.089–3.65%.

Abstract:This article offers the first extensive analysis of female agency in the marine insurance industry of early modern Europe. Drawing from a data set of more than four thousand insurance policies signed in the Royal Insurance Chamber in Paris between 1668 and 1672, the article studies the activities of Parisian women within the institution. These policies illustrate that women played a crucial role in the Chamber as underwriters, creditors, commission agents, and policyholders. Moreover, institutional papers and the records of the Parisian admiralty court reveal that women acted ably in defense of their interests when conflicts emerged, although there were limitations to their agency in the Chamber itself. In this way, the article challenges the long-standing perception that underwriting was an exclusively masculine activity in pre-modern Europe. Moreover, it sheds light on the role of women in supporting the maritime and colonial policies of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Louis XIV's eminent minister, thereby becoming underwriters of France's early Atlantic Empire.

Energy storage is a common challenge for spacecraft and vehicles, whose operating range and operational availability are limited to a considerable extent by the storage capacity; mass and volume are the main issues. Composite structural batteries (CSBs) are emerging as a new solution to reduce the size of electric systems that can bear loads and store energy. Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) offer significant advantages over metallic structures. This paper reviews the recent design of multifunctional composites by combining batteries with CFRP to obtain structural lightweight and excellent mechanical properties. The assembly methods for different CSBs based on the type of electrolyte used are discussed. A comparative analysis is performed on the energy density, rate performance, cycle performance, and mechanical performance with a particular focus on the multifunctional efficiency of various CSBs. Furthermore, the opportunities and challenges in CSBs are discussed, and research ideas are proposed for this emerging field.

With the development of lithium-ion batteries, high capacity and high cycle stability have been the two main goals being pursued. Recent studies have shown that ZrV2O7 does not perform well in energy storage due to its low electrical conductivity and poor cycling stability. Elemental doping has proven to be an effective strategy for improving electrochemical performance. In this paper, we prepared Zr0.1Fe0.9V1.1Mo0.9O7(ZFVMO) and Zr0.1Fe0.9V1.1Mo0.9O7@c (ZFVMO@c) materials using a simple solid-phase sintering method and a fast microwave sintering method. Double ionic heterovalent substitution of Zr4+/V5+ in ZrV2O7 using Fe3+/Mo6+, Fe3+/Mo6+ gives it near-zero thermal expansion characteristics and excellent conductive properties. In electrochemical tests, the first discharge capacities of ZFVMO and ZFVMO@C are 2261 mA h g−1 and 727 mA h g−1, respectively, and the batteries were finally stabilized for 475 and 500 cycles. Compared to ZrV2O7, the electrochemical properties of ZFVMO are greatly improved.

ABSTRACTThis paper examines the relationship between our child analytic theories and what we say to the children with whom we work. This is a complicated relationship, one that involves the analyst’s conscious and unconscious ideas, formulations, and emotional reactions. This paper explores the complexities and vicissitudes of this relationship, and encourages an approach to intervention that is direct, simple, respectful, and at times focused on difficult aspects of the child’s intrapsychic landscape.

ABSTRACTThis is an introduction to a collection of papers on developmental trauma which describe psychological and biological effects of exposure to extreme adversity that affects all of development from childhood into adulthood. Each of the papers contributes a different lens in the way we think about and treat people who have experienced trauma.

ABSTRACTWhile parental divorce can have a profound effect on the development of a child, the effect of a custody conflict following divorce can have an extreme, traumatic, and lifelong impact on a child. The conflict between the parents that occurred prior to their divorce can be sustained long after the parental divorce, reinforcing highly dysfunctional patterns of relationships between the parents, between each parent and child, and then put the child at risk for pathological patterns of relationships with peers and intimates. Though difficulties in the development of mature object relations and a mature sense of self are obviously at risk given this milieu of overt interpersonal conflict, anger, hatred, and parental preoccupation, difficulties in a child’s capacity to explore the environment, i.e. play, learn academically, and value their body can also be adversely affected. This paper presents cases from varying stages of childhood development to demonstrate the potentially traumatic effects on the development of children living through parental custody conflict, as well as the lifelong effect on an adult experiencing a parental custody conflict in childhood.

ABSTRACTThis paper looks at how difficult early experiences may give rise to defenses in which patients rely excessively on their minds, or on bodily activity, having little faith in good reliable objects, internal or external, and little capacity for relaxation and “just being.” Links are made between Winnicott’s theories about mind and psyche-soma as well as both older and more recent thinking about the body, nervous system, and the importance of safeness. This is illustrated with clinical examples of patients with bright, busy minds who were distrustful of others and out of touch with their own bodily states. Examples of some ways in which psychoanalytic therapy can incorporate work with embodied processes are demonstrated and discussed.

ABSTRACTThis paper is a summary of findings from the “Adoption and Attachment Representations” study which was a collaboration between the Anna Freud Centre, Great Ormond Street, and Coram that focused on the nature and development of parent and child attachment representations in an adoption context. The study began with Adult Attachment Interview assessments of both mothers and fathers who would go on to adopt a group of 58 previously maltreated children aged four to eight years. There was also a comparison group of 42 children, also aged four to eight years but who had been adopted in their infancy. The children were assessed early in their adoptive placement, with the Story Stem Assessment Profile in order to focus on their attachment representations along with a range of cognitive and psychological functioning assessments. The parents were interviewed using the Parent Development Interview to access their attachment representations of their children. These assessments were repeated one year and two years later with subsequent follow-ups in early adolescence and a recently completed phase in the adoptees’ adulthood. The study is unique in exploring aspects of intergenerational patterns of attachment in nonbiologically related parents and children in a longitudinal design. The findings suggest that parental attachment states of mind are associated with their children’s attachment representations and the “intervention” of adoption is powerful with “late placed” children adopting more secure themes in their story stem narratives over time while also retaining some less optimal features such as avoidance and disorganization. The paper makes links with previous developmental and psychoanalytic work in the field of adoption and explores the potential policy implications of the study.

ABSTRACTOf all current psychologies, psychoanalysis is the most engaged with the complex and chaotic dimensions of human development and suffering – intricate psychic processes, fluxing mental and physical states, unexpected shifts between clarity and confusion, big changes following small inputs, uncertainty about causes and locations – including whose thoughts belong to whom, and more. These crucial elements, however, have not always been taken up explicitly. Nonlinear dynamic systems theory (NLDS) provides an aesthetically pleasing and scientifically current framework for these factors and illuminates established clinical practice and theory. Through clinical examples, conceptual elaboration, and an account of the author’s growing interest in this field, this paper offers a user-friendly invitation to NLDS.

ABSTRACTNonlinear Dynamic Systems Theory has been used by researchers in development for over 25 years. This paper demonstrates how this theory applies to psychodynamic development throughout the life cycle and illustrates how it can be used to explain change in psychoanalytic treatment.

ABSTRACTPsychic development over the course of adulthood has been largely neglected in the psychoanalytic literature over the past 30 years. This paper is an attempt to update a psychoanalytic understanding of adult development and to begin to illustrate its clinical value. Over time, increased longevity has changed the experience of life phases, and our ideas about development have moved away from rigid stage theories and universal concepts toward a more flexible, individualized, and socio-culturally informed understanding of the core challenges that define development of the personality over the course of life. In this paper I will focus on important aspects of self-experience across the adult life cycle to outline a revised and expanded scheme of the key intrapsychic tasks of adulthood. I will use an extended case example to illustrate how the psychoanalytic practitioner can use this adult development perspective to inform treatment. Finally, I will consider the applicability of the “developmental object” concept to adult treatment and to our ideas of how people change over the course of life, both within and outside treatment.

ABSTRACTThe contributions to Honoring Fred Pine represent several generations of Pine’s influence. All highlight developmental processes, which lie at the heart of Pine’s work. Slade integrates Pine’s work with Attachment theory—threat and fear in the first year can become supercharged affective moments, as the child seeks connection to regulate fear. My paper emphasizes the formative role of early supercharged affective moments and their lifelong role in internalization and identification processes. Eagle emphasizes the role of subjectivity, staying as close as possible to experience-near interpretations as central in both his and Pine’s work. Blum emphasizes Pine’s contributions to preoedipal development with his paper on the meaning of Leonardo’s screen memory from earliest life and its relation to the Mona Lisa. Lastly, Akhtar describes the essence of Pine’s work with clarity and charm.

ABSTRACTFred Pine was a brilliant theoretician, an extraordinarily gifted clinician, an inspiring teacher, and a beautiful writer. He was also a master synthesizer who could hold multiple possibilities, multiple phenomena, multiple observations, and multiple theories in mind, bringing them together in an elegant and rich whole. This paper focuses on Fred Pine’s vision of a truly developmental and “radically open-minded” psychoanalysis, as it was described in a series of theoretical and clinical papers compiled in the volume Developmental Theory and Clinical Process(1985).

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this paper is to focus on the role of identification processes, how they change and transform over the course of 60 years, to highlight the depth and complexity that has been added to our psychoanalytic endeavor through the far-reaching developmental perspective of Fred Pine. My goal has been to fill in some of the gaps in the evolution of complex, coherent, integrated mental representations of self and other and the evolving quality of intimacy. By tracing the developmental trajectories of two sisters over 60 years, one – the oldest daughter – rejected and neglected for being a girl and, the younger daughter – the child whom the mother “always wanted.” I will show how supercharged affective moments of disrupted merger played out differently in each sister because each identified with a different aspect of mother. Some differences include a focus on transforming and evolving identifications as the subjects faced the challenges of the different developmental periods, not only during earliest childhood but including latency, emerging adulthood, midlife, and late middle age. Also highlighted is the role of different ways of coping with early aggression – those that interfere, causing rigidity. and those that facilitate flexibility in evolving mental representations.

ABSTRACTThis paper is a contribution to a special section in honor of Fred Pine. After briefly describing my personal relationship with Fred, I discuss some issues in which our perspectives converge. These issues include the pluralism of different psychoanalytic schools, the possibility of a unified psychoanalytic theory, the use of experience-near interpretation, and the importance of subjective experience. I then summarize a proposal for a revamping of some fundamental concepts and formulations of classical theory, including the concepts of unconscious mental contents and the dynamic unconscious, in order to render them more faithful to lived experience.

ABSTRACTThis paper is a tribute to the late Fred Pine, PhD. Relating to Dr. Pine’s original exploration of preoedipal and preverbal development, it discusses and amplifies Freud’s interpretation of Leonardo’s dream. It further explores Leonardo’s early development and regards the Mona Lisa as a representation of his biological mother. It is a springboard for considerations of early development and object relations.

ABSTRACTThis brief communication revisits the contributions of the eminent psychoanalyst Fred Pine (1931–2022). From his many papers and book chapters and from his three solo-authored books, four ideas are selected as being the most representative of Pine’s distinguished contributions to psychoanalysis. These include 1) the distinction between separation and separateness anxieties, 2) the delineation of the four psychologies of psychoanalysis, 3) the disciplined flexibility of his therapeutic technique, and 4) the concept of “developmental work” in the clinical setting.

ABSTRACTThis section honors Anni Bergman as a pioneer in theory, research, and clinical work across the lifespan. The papers were selected because they demonstrated deep understanding of the developmental process as applied to clinical work, in ways that reflect Dr. Bergman’s own practice. Singletary elaborates on Bergman’s later writing on rapprochement, seeing it as a lifelong process of dealing with the inevitable pains of life and its limitations, not just an early phase of development. Diamond et al. bring a developmental perspective to separation anxiety, its transformations, and links to later pathology/normality. Gold’s research-informed work in parent infant treatment emphasizes hearing the voice of the baby and creating a play space for listening as key in emphasizing mismatch and repair. Blom’s complex case presentation emphasizes the maternal in the treatment of a traumatized mother as she seeks safety as a parent wrestling with the ghosts of her nursery, and the traumatizing social systems in which she exists. Belinson et al. present an approach to supporting the most marginalized and vulnerable children, in families suffering from poverty, social marginalization, and intergenerational trauma. Throughout, there is insistence on creating space for multiple developmental processes including finding ways to be together. Lastly, Harrison presents a single case in which she shows the microanalytic process of working with a neurodiverse boy, using methods of building narratives that are outside language and symbolic play.

ABSTRACTThis paper, written in honor of Anni Bergman, focuses on the concept of separation anxiety as it was conceptualized and developed in attachment theory by Bowlby and in separation-individuation theory by Mahler and colleagues. The focus is on how separation anxiety manifests differentially in individuals with secure versus insecure attachment and in different subphases of the separation-individuation process, with emphasis on the areas of overlap and divergence in the two traditions. The paper then reviews recent research that has focused on how separation anxiety has provided a transdiagnostic risk factor for psychopathology, including anxiety, depression, and PTSD, complicating the treatment course of individuals with these disorders. These findings have contributed to the delineation of the DSM-5 diagnosis of Separation Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and to the development of new assessment instruments to measure it. We consider how separation anxiety has been assessed in several treatment studies of these disorders and how it is related to other factors such as insecure attachment and reflective function (RF, mentalization in attachment relationships). The ways in which recent research on separation anxiety in individuals with psychopathology, including depression and PTSD, has affirmed and expanded the original formulations of Bowlby and Bergman and her colleagues is also discussed.

ABSTRACTThis paper offers an overview of infant observation, parental reflective functioning, and the repair theory of human development as they apply to clinical work with families with young children. Using vignettes from the author’s practice of pediatrics and early relational health, it reveals the power of playing in the uncertainty to facilitate moments of connection and healing.

ABSTRACTTherapists who work with very young and deeply troubled children stand on the shoulders of Anni Bergman, expanding her vision to ongoing work. This paper will describe a program of dyadic treatment for caregivers and young children in the foster care system, for whom multiple generations of trauma have prevented secure attachment and therefore disrupted the development of the confidence and trust needed for rapprochement and future ego development in the children. The program is based on concepts of Attachment and Mentalization, which are branches of the same tree as Bergman’s pioneering work with Mahler and Pine on separation and individuation and Bergman’s career-long exploration of the inner world of children during toddlerhood. Clinical examples will be presented of work with two children first seen at less than two years of age.

ABSTRACTPaying tribute to Anni Bergman requires a clinician to find the way to difficult clinical experiences that challenge one’s identity and demand creativity and humility. Anni was a keen observer of nuance, difference, and connection, especially in the nonverbal. She also sought to integrate evolving knowledge of developmental psychology and clinical practice into her work, through formal measures or technique. In the present day, Anni’s influence embodies a curious, active, integrative stance that helps patients find themselves and helps clinicians stay close to the work through their own learning. This paper explores a case though multiple lenses that include Attachment Theory, psychoanalytic ideas on maternal identity, trauma and resilience, where treatment was sought during the perinatal period. Integrating formal self-report and research measures, specifically the Adult Attachment Interview, into a clinical context helps both therapist and patient define the work and find each other.

ABSTRACTThis paper will present research and clinical material exploring how eco-anxiety can be felt and thought about by children and young people. It will then discuss the importance of understanding the range of climate anxiety found in practice ranging from mild to medium to significant, severe, and critical climate distress. Frequently eco-anxiety is perceived as a singular emotional and cognitive experience, and all too often seen through adult eyes. This scale drawn from clinical practice attempts to differentiate between the different experiences children and young people can have by drawing on international clinical and research evidence. It will look at the individual, relational, collective, and planetary trauma as experienced by children and young people. The paper will finish with clinical practice considerations.

ABSTRACTThis article focuses on the perspective of children and young people growing up under the current threat of climate crisis. It shows that there is a multiplicity of ways in which children and young people are already affected by the impact of the climate crisis and will be affected far more in the future. Taken together, the deleterious effects on the development of children and young people are underlined by the empirical findings on the stress young people experience. It must be considered that climate injustice also influences the relationship between the generations and must be seen as a rupture in transgenerational justice. The paper is rounded out by socio-critical and psychoanalytical observations which attempt to explain our mechanisms of defense toward the climate crisis. These mechanisms can be analyzed at the level of the personal but also on the macro scale of societal defenses against a terrifying reality. Finally, I offer responses to the question of what might typify “climate-friendly psychoanalysis.”

Background: NR2F1mutations are associated with Bosch-Boonstra-Schaaf optic atrophy syndrome (BBSOAS). Although ~ 46.7% of BBSOAS patients present with epilepsy, which is always drug-resistant and associated with higher rates of behavioral and cognitive problems, the treatment and outcomes of NR2F1-related epilepsy have rarely been described. Here, we present new cases of BBSOAS-related epilepsy and summarize all previously reported cases to explore the effective treatment for this type of epilepsy. Methods: We identified six new Chinese cases of BBSOAS with epilepsy. Five different de novo heterozygous NR2F1mutations were identified in these cases, including two novel mutations c.365G > T, p.Cys122Phe and c.449G > T, p.Gly150Val. By combining the six cases and 14 previously reported cases, we analyzed the characteristics and treatment outcomes of NR2F1-related epilepsy. Results: Twelve of the 20 patients (60%) had infantile epileptic spasms, while the other patients had generalized tonic/tonic-clonic, focal, myoclonic, absence, or unclassified seizures. Several anti-seizure medications, steroids, and a ketogenic diet were administered in these cases. However, seizures were controlled in only 50% of previously reported cases, while all of the six new cases became seizure-free after perampanel as an add-on treatment. The average time from the addition of perampanel to seizure control was 7.33 ± 4.59 months (range, 1–12 months). The median time to seizure freedom was 14 months (1–32 months, > 19 months in 3 cases). The average dosage of perampanel needed for epilepsy control was 0.22 ± 0.17 mg/kg per day. Conclusions: In this paper, we comprehensively summarized the clinical characteristics, treatments and outcomes of NR2F1-related epilepsy for the first time. Perampanel exhibits dramatic efficacy for NR2F1-related epilepsy. This will help optimize the treatment of this type of epilepsy and provide clues for its pathogenic mechanisms. The two novel mutations expand the genotype spectrum of this disease.

Background: Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and short messaging service (SMS)-based tobacco cessation interventions have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing tobacco use in many populations, but evidence is needed on which tailored treatments are most efficacious in meeting the complex medical and psychosocial factors confronting people living with HIV (PLWH) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This paper describes the protocol of a study to test the efficacy of both NRT and a tailored SMS-based tobacco use cessation intervention among PLWH in Uganda and Zambia. Methods: In a randomized controlled trial, 800 adult PLWH who use tobacco will be recruited by health care professionals at HIV treatment centers where they are receiving care. Participants will be randomized to one of the four study arms: (1) standard of care [SOC; brief clinician advice to quit combined with HIV education and information aimed at encouraging HIV treatment adherence (with no mention of tobacco) delivered via text messages]; (2) SOC + 12 weeks of NRT; (3) SOC + 6 weeks of SMS text messages to support quitting tobacco use (SMS); or (4) SOC + NRT + SMS. Participants will receive a cell phone and solar panel with power bank for charging the phone. The main outcome is cessation of tobacco use by study participants verified by urinary cotinine (< 15 ng/mL) at 6 months post-enrollment. As a secondary tobacco use outcome, we will measure 7-day point-prevalence abstinence (7 consecutive days of no tobacco use) measured by self-report and biochemically-verified at 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 3 months post enrollment. Discussion: Our study will provide insight into the efficacy, feasibility and applicability of delivering tobacco cessation interventions through health care professionals combined with tailored tobacco cessation SMS text messaging in two countries with different tobacco use patterns, policy environments, and health care resources and provide needed information to providers and policymakers looking for cost-effective tobacco cessation interventions. The previously tested SMS-platform to be used in our study is uniquely positioned to be scaled in low- and middle-income countries worldwide, in which case evidence of even modest success in reducing the prevalence of tobacco consumption among PLWH could confer enormous health and economic benefits.

Elderly individuals commonly experience the risk of dysphagia or difficulties in eating and swallowing food safely. Three-dimensional (3D) food printing is a promising technique widely used in customized food development. This paper reviewed the potential of 3D food printing in nutritional customization and textural modification of personalized food for the elderly with dysphagia. 3D food printing can be used to re-formulate the food ink by combining more than one type of food materials to ensure high calorie and nutrient intake, improve sensory quality, and prevent malnutrition; thus, understanding the functional properties of such macronutrients compounds is essential to design food ink that meets personalized nutrient requirements. Hydrocolloids have been commonly used to modify the desired soft texture and consistent viscoelastic properties of 3D-printed elderly food, as well as improve printability and structural stability. The food standard guidelines have been established and used to categorize texture-modified foods to ensure easy to eat and safe swallowing for the elderly with swallowing difficulties. Finally, the production of personalized food using 3D printing may provide more food options, facilitate safe oral intake, and increase calorie intake to improve the healthy mealtime experience for the elderly.

Cannabis, traditionally used for recreation due to psychoactive compounds in its leaves, flowers, and seeds, has not been thoroughly explored for potential therapeutic benefits. Δ9-trans-Tetrahydrocannabinol, a key cannabinoid in cannabis, causes hallucinogenic effects and delirium symptoms. In contrast, cannabidiol (CBD) does not induce hallucinations and has shown effectiveness in treating symptoms of various rare, incurable diseases. Cannabis exhibits neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic, anti-bacterial, analgesic, and antiepileptic properties, recently attracting more attention. This review aims to summarize comprehensively the impact of cannabis on human health, focusing on endocannabinoids and their receptors. It also delves into recent CBD research advancements, highlighting the compound’s potential medical applications. Overall, this paper provides valuable insights into the prospective development of medical cannabis, with a particular emphasis on CBD.

Neutron star observations, as well as experiments on neutron-rich nuclei, used to motivate one to look at degenerate nuclear matter from its extreme, namely, pure neutron matter. As an important next step, impurities and clusters in dilute neutron matter have attracted special attention. In this paper, we review in-medium properties of these objects on the basis of the physics of polarons, which have been recently realized in ultracold atomic experiments. We discuss how such atomic and nuclear systems are related to each other in terms of polarons. In addition to the interdisciplinary understanding of in-medium nuclear clusters, it is shown that the quasiparticle energy of a single proton in neutron matter is associated with the symmetry energy, implying a novel route toward the nuclear equation of state from the neutron-rich side.

In this paper, molecular dynamics simulations have been employed to investigate the phonon thermal transport in bilayer polycrystalline graphene nanoribbon (pGNR/pGNR), compared with bilayer graphene nanoribbon (GNR/GNR) and pGNR/GNR heterostructure. The interfacial thermal resistance (ITR) of bilayer structures was also calculated using the heat dissipation method. The effects of interlayer interaction, grain size, and vacancy defects on ITR and in-plane phonon thermal conductivity of bilayer structures were investigated. It was found that the ITR as well as in-plane phonon thermal conductivity of pGNR/pGNR wasless than that of pGNR/GNR and much less than that of GNR/GNR, for the same size. For the studied bilayer structures, both the ITR and in-plane phonon thermal conductivity decrease with increasing interlayer interactions. Moreover, ITR increases with increasing grain area size whereas decreases with increasing vacancy defects in pGNR-based bilayers. The introduction of pGNR interface roughness and vacancy defects results in an enhanced phonon coupling in pGNR-based bilayers compared to pure GNR/GNR bilayers. Presented simulation investigations will help to understand the interlayer thermal transport properties of polycrystalline graphene and provide essential guidance for experimentally regulating phonon thermal transport between layers of polycrystalline graphene.

Bandpass filters with high frequency and wide bandwidth are indispensable parts of the fifth-generation telecommunication technologies, and currently, they are mainly based on surface and bulk acoustic wave resonators. Owing to its high mechanical strength, excellent stability at elevated temperatures, good thermal conductivity, and compatibility with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology, aluminum nitride (AlN) becomes the primary piezoelectric material for high-frequency resonators. This review briefly introduces the structures and key performance parameters of the acoustic resonators. The common filter topologies are also discussed. In particular, research progresses in the piezoelectric AlN layer, electrodes, and substrates of the resonators are elaborated. Increasing the electromechanical coupling constant is the main concern for the AlN film. To synthesize AlN in single-crystalline or poly-crystalline with a high intensity of (0002) orientation, and alloy the AlN with other elements are two effective approaches. For the substrates and bottom electrodes, lattice and thermal expansion mismatch, and surface roughness are critical for the synthesis of a high-crystal-quality piezoelectric layer. The electrodes with low electrical resistance, large acoustic-impedance mismatch to the piezoelectric layer, and low density are ideal to reduce insertion loss. Based on the research progress, several possible research directions in the AlN-based filters are suggested at the end of the paper.

Case management (CM) is an intervention for improving integrated care for patients with complex care needs. The implementation of this complex intervention often raises opportunities for change and collective leadership has the potential to optimize the implementation. However, the application of collective leadership in real-world is not often described in the literature. This commentary highlights challenges faced during the implantation of a CM intervention in primary care for people with complex care needs, including stakeholders’ buy-in and providers’ willingness to change their practice, selection of the best person for the case manager position and staff turnover. Based on lessons learned from PriCARE research program, this paper encourages researchers to adopt collective leadership strategies for the implementation of complex interventions, including promoting a collaborative approach, fostering stakeholders’ engagement in a trusting and fair environment, providing a high level of communication, and enhancing collective leadership attitudes and skills. The learnings from the PriCARE program may help guide researchers for implementing complex healthcare interventions.

Background: The National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Cancer Center Support Grants (CCSGs) encourages Cancer Centers to address health disparities and reduce the cancer burden in their Catchment Area (CA) through an organized Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) structure. This paper shares the development of two guide models that fosters the operations of the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center (MCCCC) COE Office and programs, the MCCCC COE Impact Model and the MCCCC COE Logic Model. Methods: Following a less than stellar CCSG rating for COE in 2018, the MCCCC developed a transition team to specifically address the critique and create a transformative plan for engaging communities to address cancer burden in the CA. A qualitative research approach was employed, focusing on organizing and displaying the relationship between MCCCC COE processes and outcomes through impact and logic models. An impact model was developed to illustrate the components of the CCSG and connect those components to short- and long-term COE outcomes. A logic model was developed to track and monitor activities for continuous process improvement for all COE activities. Results: The impact and logic model serve as a roadmap to monitor progress towards short- and long-term COE goals of the MCCCC. The COE operational strategies draw upon bidirectional partnership, evidence-based practices, and research facilitation to respond to the CCSG critique. Conclusion: These strategies demonstrate successful practices in addressing cancer burden, promoting health equity and eliminating cancer disparities in the MCCCC CA.

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the field of infodemic management has grown in response to urgent global need. Social listening is the first step in managing the infodemic, and many organizations and health systems have implemented processes. Social media analysis tools have traditionally been developed for commercial purposes, rather than public health, and little is known of the experiences and needs of those professionals using them for infodemic management. Methods: We developed a cross sectional survey and distributed through global infodemic management networks between December 2022 and February 2023. Questions were structured over four sections related to work-practice and user needs and did not collect any personal details from participants. Descriptive analysis was conducted on the study results. Qualitative analysis was used to categorise and understand answers to open-text questions. Results: There were 417 participants, 162/417 who completed all survey questions, and 255/417 who completed some, all responses are included in analysis. Respondents came from all global regions and a variety of workplaces. Participants had an average of 4.4 years’ experience in the analysis of social media for public health. COVID-19 was the most common health issue people had conducted social media analysis for. Results reveal a range of training, technical capacity, and support needs. Conclusions: This paper is the first we are aware of to seek and describe the needs of those using social media analysis platforms for public health purposes since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. There are key areas for future work and research, including addressing the training, capacity building and leadership needs of those working in this space, and the need to facilitate easier access to better platforms for performing social media analysis.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic highlights vaccination’s critical role in reducing morbidity and mortality, depending on public attitude. This study aims to identify the estimates of COVID-19 vaccine acceptance in pregnant and lactating women, as well as associated potential factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between August and September 2021, through an online survey and with a paper survey distributed in gynecology and pediatric clinics. Pregnant and breastfeeding women aged 18 years and above were recruited. The attitude scale was created specifically for evaluating attitudes towards the COVID-19 vaccine. Results: In total, 207 women participated, with 132 breastfeeding, 74 pregnant and 1 experiencing both conditions. Of these, one hundred and twenty women (58%) considered themselves at risk for COVID-19 infection. In addition, 51.7% (n= 107) of women expressed the intent to receive the vaccine once available. A multivariable linear regression was conducted taking the COVID-19 vaccination attitude scale as a dependent variable. The results revealed an R-squared value of 0.558, indicating that approximately 55.8% of the variance in the attitude scale was accounted for by the included predictors. The results showed that preventive measures (ß=2.25, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) [1.02; 3.48], p< 0.001), preference for vaccines made in Europe and America (ß=1.23; 95% CI [0.69–1.77], p< 0.001), protect yourself for getting sick (ß=4.22, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) [2.83; 5.61], p< 0.001) and belief in the importance of vaccination for themselves and their baby (ß=3.49; 95% CI [2.01; 4.98], p< 0.001) were associated with a positive attitude towards vaccination. Conversely, experiencing a previous bad reaction to a vaccine (ß= -1.35; 95% CI [0.85–1.85], p< 0.001) and concerns regarding COVID-19 vaccine safety (ß= -4.09; 95% CI [-5.98; -2.21], p< 0.001) were associated with a negative attitude towards vaccination. Conclusion: Our findings reveal that COVID-19 vaccine acceptability among pregnant and breastfeeding women, amidst the pandemic was insufficient to meet community immunity. The identified reasons for vaccine reluctance, notably concerns about safety for both personal health and the health of their pregnancy or newborns, along with insufficient information about the vaccine, underscore the pressing need to address these factors to improve immunization rates.

The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere has been linked to health concerns, including cancer. Automobile workshops are significant contributors to PAH emissions due to their operations. Hence, this investigation aimed to identify and quantify the sources of PM2.5-bound PAHs in the ambient air of automobile workshops in Benin City, Nigeria, using molecular diagnostic ratios. PM2.5 samples were collected from 60 automobiles over 1 year, during the rainy (April to November) and dry (December to March) seasons of 2019. Sample collection utilized a low-volume air sampler with quartz filter paper, and extraction was performed using a 1:1 mixture of acetone and dichloromethane. The analysis involved an HP Agilent Technology 6890 Gas Chromatography (GC) system with a flame ionization detector. The annual average concentrations of PM2.5-bound PAHs in Benin City were 269.87 ± 249.32 ng/m3(dry season) and 216.30 ± 204.89 ng/m3(wet season). Molecular diagnostic ratios, such as Fl/(Fl + Py), An/(An + Phe), BaP/(BaP + Chry), BbF/BkF, InP/(InP + BghiP), and BaA/(BaA + Chr), aided in identifying PAH sources. Gasoline combustion, diesel combustion, traffic emissions, and emissions from automobile panel welders were found to be the primary sources of PAHs near vehicle workshops. These findings provide crucial insights for developing effective strategies to reduce emissions and protect public health in the air surrounding automobile workshops in Benin City.

Communication with people with hearing or speaking disabilities is always difficult when there is no knowledge of sign language. The presence of sign language is not enough to communicate smoothly, this process requires another easy medium for communication to make it more efficient, that is, via a digital medium. This paper proposes using Feed-Forward Neural Networks on hand landmarks for real-time sign language identification. The hand landmarks identification was carried out using the MediaPipe Hands library. This approach would make the classification problem efficient by making it faster and requiring less memory. Through this, we aim to bridge the gap between the difficulties that arise during communication between people who do and do not know American Sign Language.

Background: Numerical methods are used to solve differential equations, but few are effective for nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) of order higher than one. This paper proposes a new method for such ODEs, based on Taylor series expansion. The new method is a second-order method for second-order ODEs, and it is equivalent to the central difference method, a well-known method for solving differential equations. The new method is also simple to implement for higher-order differential equations. The proposed technique was applied to solve the Van der Pol and Van der Pol–Duffing equations. It is stable over a wide range of nonlinearity and produces accurate and reliable results. For the self-excitation Van der Pol equation, the proposed technique was applied with different values of nonlinear damping. Results: The results were compared with those obtained using the ODE15s solver in MATLAB. The two sets of results showed excellent agreement. For the forced Van der Pol–Duffing equation, the proposed technique was applied with different values of exciting force amplitude and frequency. It was found that for certain conditions, the solution obtained using the proposed technique differed from that obtained using ODE15s. Conclusions: The solution obtained using the proposed technique showed good agreement with the solutions obtained using ODE45 and Runge–Kutta fourth order. The results show that the proposed approach is very simple to apply and produces acceptable error. It is a powerful and versatile tool for solving of high-order nonlinear differential equations accurately.

Background: The utilization of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) has emerged as a crucial methodology in the field of structural and elasticity analysis, facilitating researchers in their understanding of material responses to diverse thermal or structural loads. This study investigates the utilization of FEA to simulate the Impact characteristics of titanium composites, with specific emphasis on the Charpy impact test. The research utilizes the Abaqus Explicit software, which is widely recognized for its explicit dynamic analysis functionalities, to simulate high-speed and short-duration events such as impacts. The primary objective of this study is to examine the impact behavior of Ti–7Al–1mo/TiN composites fabricated through the spark plasma sintering technique. The impact behavior is simulated using FEA, wherein the shear failure model is utilized to replicate fracture phenomena. This paper examines the methodology employed in the FEA approach, with a particular focus on various factors including boundary conditions, explicit dynamic analysis settings, and material properties. Results: The outcomes and analyses involve the examination of the von Mises stress distribution, displacement magnitude, and energy behavior of the models that were tested. Reinforcement of Ti–Al–Mo ternary alloy with TiN led to a progressive increase in maximum von Mises stress, reaching a peak at 3 wt% TiN. Conversely, displacement magnitude decreased with increasing TiN content, with CP-Ti and the unreinforced alloy exhibiting the highest values. Absorbed energy also declined with higher TiN levels. While models containing 5 and 7 wt% TiN displayed limited plastic deformation before fracture, composites with ≤ 3 wt% TiN maintained acceptable ductility despite enhanced strength and stiffness. Conclusion: The FEA methodology effectively simulates the Charpy impact characteristics of Ti–7Al–1Mo/TiN composites, thereby offering significant contributions to understanding their mechanical behaviors. These findings suggest that TiN reinforcement up to 3 wt% presents a promising strategy for improving the mechanical performance of Ti–Al–Mo alloys while minimizing the trade-off in toughness. This research emphasizes the inherent trade-off between toughness and strength/stiffness, suggesting the possibility of optimizing the composition of materials to suit particular applications. This study makes a valuable contribution to the expanding field of impact behavior research, demonstrating the potential of FEA, specifically utilizing Abaqus Explicit software, for enhancing material design and evaluation.

Biochar obtained from mixed paper fiber sludge and the grain husks resulted in a significant increase of SOC over 7 years.Biochar aging resulted in a decrease in pH one year after its application in 2015 and 2019.The combination of N-fertilizer with biochar caused an improvement in soil inorganic N content in 2014 and reapplication in 2018.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) provides insights into complex patterns of brain functional changes, making it a valuable tool for exploring addiction-related brain connectivity. However, effectively extracting addiction-related brain connectivity from fMRI data remains challenging due to the intricate and non-linear nature of brain connections. Therefore, this paper proposed the Graph Diffusion Reconstruction Network (GDRN), a novel framework designed to capture addiction-related brain connectivity from fMRI data acquired from addicted rats. The proposed GDRN incorporates a diffusion reconstruction module that effectively maintains the unity of data distribution by reconstructing the training samples, thereby enhancing the model’s ability to reconstruct nicotine addiction-related brain networks. Experimental evaluations conducted on a nicotine addiction rat dataset demonstrate that the proposed GDRN effectively explores nicotine addiction-related brain connectivity. The findings suggest that the GDRN holds promise for uncovering and understanding the complex neural mechanisms underlying addiction using fMRI data.

Sleep stage classification is a necessary step for diagnosing sleep disorders. Generally, experts use traditional methods based on every 30 seconds (s) of the biological signals, such as electrooculograms (EOGs), electrocardiograms (ECGs), electromyograms (EMGs), and electroencephalograms (EEGs), to classify sleep stages. Recently, various state-of-the-art approaches based on a deep learning model have been demonstrated to have efficient and accurate outcomes in sleep stage classification. In this paper, a novel deep convolutional neural network (CNN) combined with a long short-time memory (LSTM) model is proposed for sleep scoring tasks. A key frequency domain feature named Mel-frequency Cepstral Coefficient (MFCC) is extracted from EEG and EMG signals. The proposed method can learn features from frequency domains on different bio-signal channels. It firstly extracts the MFCC features from multi-channel signals, and then inputs them to several convolutional layers and an LSTM layer. Secondly, the learned representations are fed to a fully connected layer and a softmax classifier for sleep stage classification. The experiments are conducted on two widely used sleep datasets, Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS) and Vincent’s University Hospital/University College Dublin Sleep Apnoea (UCDDB) to test the effectiveness of the method. The results of this study indicate that the model can perform well in the classification of sleep stages using the features of the 2-dimensional (2D) MFCC feature. The advantage of using the feature is that it can be used to input a two-dimensional data stream, which can be used to retain information about each sleep stage. Using 2D data streams can reduce the time it takes to retrieve the data from the one-dimensional stream. Another advantage of this method is that it eliminates the need for deep layers, which can help improve the performance of the model. For instance, by reducing the number of layers, our seven layers of the model structure takes around 400 s to train and test 100 subjects in the SHHS1 dataset. Its best accuracy and Cohen’s kappa are 82.35% and 0.75 for the SHHS dataset, and 73.07% and 0.63 for the UCDDB dataset, respectively.

In the countryside, where intensive rural development and rising property values have been observed since the late 1970s, the preservation and meaning of traditional dwellings have emerged as crucial considerations in shaping Hong Kong’s countryside conservation policy. The focus of this paper is on the conservation of temples, as we are drawn to these structures not only for their architectural merit but also for their role as public buildings within the countryside. Consequently, their cultural significance is heavily influenced by the stakeholders they are associated with, distinguishing them from other types of dwellings.

This paper discusses the cocreation of an emergent place-identity in a Hakka household in the Hong Kong countryside triggered by architectural restoration. Located in Kuk Po, a quintessential Hakka village that was established over 300 years ago, Yeung House was restored by the research team under a government-funded initiative to regenerate architectural values. Rebuilt in 1967, Yeung House has experienced decay and evolution over the years. It signifies the adaptive lifestyle of Hakka immigrants through its adapted siting, hybrid tectonics and modernised features. After restoration, Yeung House was repurposed into a base for education and research managed by the three house-owning villagers. Different activities were initiated by the villagers and coarranged by the research team. As a serendipitous outcome, the front yard of Yeung House has been activated into a multifunctional communal space. Subsequently, it is argued that a place-identity has emerged in Ng To and is influenced by the distinctiveness of the restored Yeung House and the continuity of the front yard. New meanings of the place have been created by the villagers through the practice of a potential, alternative lifestyle in the rural-urban parallel.

This paper aims to establish a unified typology for the culturally significant kullastone houses built in the cross-border region of Kosovo, Albania, and Montenegro during the 18th and 19th centuries. Despite some attempts at typological categorisation on the national level, a joint typology for this region currently needs to be improved. Based on existing literature and field research, the paper identifies the specificities of different geographical locations while validating the core attributes common to all typological variations. The findings suggest that the joint typological classification of kullain the Balkans should primarily be based on architectural elements and, to some extent, setting, building materials and techniques, while functional composition is consistent across all types. The paper argues that defining a common typology for the Albanian kullastone houses in the Balkans is crucial for evaluating, preserving, and developing kullaas serial properties and for their future regional development.
