Paper offers a low-cost and widely available substrate for electronics. It posses alternative characteristics to silicon, as it shows low density and high-flexibility, together with biodegradability. Solution processable materials, such as hybrid perovskites, also present light and flexible features, together with a huge tunability of the material composition with varying optical properties. In this study, we combine paper substrates with halide-mixed perovskites for the creation of low-cost and easy-to-fabricate perovskite-on-paper photodetectors with a broadband-tunable spectral response. From the bandgap tunability of halide-mixed perovskites we create photodetectors with a cut-off spectral onset that ranges from the NIR to the green, by increasing the bromide content on MAPb(I$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_3$ perovskite alloys. The devices show a fast and efficient response. The best performances are observed for the pure I and Br perovskite compositions, with a maximum responsivity of 376 mA/W on the MAPbBr$_3$ device. Paper holds the promise to replace silicon substrates in applications like internet of things or disposable electronics that require ultra-low-cost electronic components and an environmentally friendly electronic waste management. In the last years, spurred by the abovementioned properties of paper as a substrate and the exceptional electronic, mechanical and optical properties of van der Waals (vdW) materials, many research groups have worked towards the integration of vdW materials-based devices on paper. Recently, a method to deposit a continuous film of densely packed interconnects of vdW materials on paper by simply rubbing the vdW crystals against the rough surface of paper has been presented. This method utilizes the weak interlayer vdW interactions and allows cleaving of the crystals into micro platelets through the abrasion against the paper. Here, we aim to illustrate the general character and the potential of this technique by fabricating films of 39 different vdW materials (including superconductors, semi-metals, semiconductors, and insulators) on standard copier paper. We have thoroughly characterized their optical properties showing their high optical quality: one can easily resolve the absorption band edge of semiconducting vdW materials and even the excitonic features present in some vdW materials with high exciton binding energy. We also measured the electrical resistivity for several vdW materials films on paper finding exceptionally low values, which are in some cases, orders of magnitude lower than those reported for analogous films produced by inkjet printing. Paper based thermoresistive sensors are fabricated by rubbing WS2 powder against a piece of standard copier paper, like the way a pencil is used to write on paper. The abrasion between the layered material and the rough paper surface erodes the material, breaking the weak van der Waals interlayer bonds, yielding a film of interconnected platelets. The resistance of WS2 presents a strong temperature dependence, as expected for a semiconductor material in which charge transport is due to thermally activated carriers. This strong temperature dependence makes the paper supported WS2 devices extremely sensitive to small changes in temperature. This exquisite thermal sensitivity, and their fast response times to sudden temperature changes, is exploited thereby demonstrating the usability of a WS2-on-paper thermal sensor in a respiration monitoring device., Comment: 6 main text figures, 1 table, 6 supp. info. figures

This paper deals with the preparation and characterization of conductive and flexible sheets based on graphite nanoplates (GNP) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Highly porous GNP nanopaper were prepared by filtration from a GNP suspension in solvent. Subsequently, the impregnation strategy was pursued to obtain a composite material. By varying the concentration of the solution to be impregnated and the deposition time, PDMS/GNP nanopapers are produced with a range of PDMS content, porosity and density. Thermal diffusivity of the films (both in-plane and cross-plane) were measured and correlated with the structure of the nanopapers. Based on the results found and considering the restraints, three formulations were further investigated for their physical, thermal and mechanical properties. Highly flexible, tough and conductive (up to 25 W/mK) nanopapers were obtained, for possible application in modern electronic devices.

The technique of passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) is used to cool an object down by simultaneously reflecting sunlight and thermally radiating heat to the cold outer space through the Earth's atmospheric window. However, for practical applications, current PDRC materials are facing unprecedented challenges such as complicated and expensive fabrication approaches and performance degradation arising from surface contamination. Here, we develop a scalable paper-based material with excellent self-cleaning and self-cooling capabilities, through air-spraying ethanolic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) microparticles suspensions embedded within the micropores of the paper. The formed superhydrophobic PTFE coating not only protects the paper from water wetting and dust contamination for real-life applications but also reinforces its solar reflectance by sunlight backscattering. The paper fibers, when enhanced with PTFE particles, efficiently reflect sunlight and strongly radiate heat through the atmospheric window, resulting in a sub-ambient cooling performance of 5$^{\circ}$C and radiative cooling power of 104 W/m$^2$ under direct solar irradiance of 834 W/m$^2$ and 671 W/m$^2$, respectively. The self-cleaning surface of the cooling paper extends its lifespan and keep its good cooling performance for outdoor applications. Additionally, dyed papers are experimentally studied for broad engineering applications. They can absorb appropriate visible wavelengths to display specific colors and effectively reflect near-infrared lights to reduce solar heating, which synchronously achieves effective radiative cooling and aesthetic varieties in a cost-effective, scalable, and energy-efficient way.

Highly flexible electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material with excellent shielding performance is of great significance to practical applications in next-generation flexible devices. However, most EMI materials suffer from insufficient flexibility and complicated preparation methods. In this study, we propose a new scheme to fabricate a magnetic Ni particle/Ag matrix composite ultrathin film on a paper surface. For a ~2 micro meter thick film on paper, the EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) was found to be 46.2 dB at 8.1 GHz after bending 200,000 times over a radius of ~2 mm. The sheet resistance (Rsq) remained lower than 2.30 Ohm after bending 200,000 times. Contrary to the change in Rsq, the EMI SE of the film generally increased as the weight ratio of Ag to Ni increased, in accordance with the principle that EMI SE is positively related with an increase in electrical conductivity. Desirable EMI shielding ability, ultrahigh flexibility, and simple processing provide this material with excellent application prospects.

We fabricate paper-supported semiconducting devices by rubbing a layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) crystal onto a piece of paper, similarly to the action of drawing/writing with a pencil on paper. We show that the abrasion between the MoS2 crystal and the paper substrate efficiently exfoliates the crystals, breaking the weak van der Waals interlayer bonds and leading to the deposition of a film of interconnected MoS2 platelets. Employing this simple method, that can be easily extended to other 2D materials, we fabricate MoS2-on-paper broadband photodectectors with spectral sensitivity from the ultraviolet (UV) to the near-infrared (NIR). In the current work, a novel class of (Ca0.9Si0.1)Al2O6:Eu2+,Nd3+ long persistent phosphor was synthesized using high-temperature (1000-1500oC) solid-state reaction method. Further, the phosphor material was formulated into a phosphorescent ink using epoxy based colloidal suspension. Interestingly the phosphorescent ink absorbs ambient energies such as white light from D65 and tungsten lamps, sunlight, artificial lights etc., stores up the energy and emit as efficient blue colored photoluminescence (PL) apparently visible for many hours for dark adapted human eye. However, the optimum PL emission centred at ~450 nm has been registered at ~365 nm excitation that is attributed to transitions from 4f65d1 to 4f7 energy levels of Eu2+ ions. The longer persistence of PL aroused due to trapping and de-trapping of holes at Nd3+ sites situated proximate to valance band. In the optimised stoichiometric composition of the phosphor, the persistence lasted for >4 hours in extremely dark conditions. Furthermore, the phenomenon of long persistence enables to create/design unique hidden markings on goods and certificates using quick response (QR) code patterns. The use of natural or bioinspired materials to develop edible electronic devices is a potentially disruptive technology that can boost point-of-care testing. The technology exploits devices which can be safely ingested, along with pills or even food, and operated from within the gastrointestinal tract. Ingestible electronics could potentially target a significant number of biomedical applications, both as therapeutic and diagnostic tool, and this technology may also impact the food industry, by providing ingestible or food-compatible electronic tags that can smart track goods and monitor their quality along the distribution chain. We hereby propose temporary tattoo-paper as a simple and versatile platform for the integration of electronics onto food and pharmaceutical capsules. In particular, we demonstrate the fabrication of all-printed Organic Field-Effect Transistors (OFETs) on untreated commercial tattoo-paper, and their subsequent transfer and operation on edible substrates with a complex non-planar geometry.

Atomically Precise Manufacturing (APM) refers to the assembly of materials with atomic precision, representing a highly advanced technology with significant potential. However, the development of APM remains in its early stages, with applications largely confined to specialized fields and lacking cohesion within a unified discipline. The current literature on APM is often dominated by older, speculative papers that discuss its immense potential risks and benefits without sufficient grounding in the latest advancements or practical limitations that exist today. This paper aims to bridge this gap by providing a comprehensive assessment of current APM and near-APM technologies, as well as using the barriers to further progress to predict future developments. Through this analysis, we seek to establish a clearer understanding of the present state of the technology and then use these insights to predict the future trajectory of APM. By doing so, we aim to create a more grounded discourse on APM and its potential risks and benefits, while also guiding future research on the necessary regulations and safety considerations for this emerging field., Comment: 28 pages

The efforts of this Note are aimed at understanding various phenomena in digital space that are incomplete and difficult to define, and to translate them into language from research fields that are based on existing large-scale experimental data. Information diffusion and user behavior patterns in digital space are often hard to intuitively capture, and the principles and mechanisms behind them are difficult to articulate. To address this challenge, we have drawn on first-principles methods in physics, particularly solid state physics. This approach is known to be effective in analyzing the behavior of real physical materials at the atomic level and in understanding the electronic properties and bonding structures of materials. We have attempted to apply physical concepts based on first-principles calculations, in particular concepts such as first Brillouin zones, band gaps, and reciprocal lattice vectors, to digital space as a metaphor. This theoretical framework allows us to quantitatively and logically infer the behavior and trends of incomplete and ambiguous digital data and phenomena. For example, the "first Brillouin zone" of information in digital media indicates the potential sphere of influence of that information, and the band gap defines the threshold of influence for the information to be widely accepted. In addition, the reciprocal lattice vector serves as a boundary that indicates the limits of information characteristics and is an indicator of the degree to which a particular piece of information resonates with users. With this theoretical supplement, our research goes beyond the mere analysis of phenomena in the digital space and provides new methods for understanding and predicting the behavior of imperfect data and uncertain digital media., Comment: There are significant errors in the graphs of the simulations in the Brillouin Zone paper, and there are a number of incorrect graphs, so I would like to withdraw and resubmit the paper. The classical variational approach to brittle fracture propagation does not distinguish between strain energy accumulation in tension versus compression and consequently results in physically unrealistic cracking under compression. A variety of energy splits have been proposed as a possible remedy. However, a unique energy split that can describe this asymmetry for general loading conditions has not been found. The main objective of this paper is to show that a complete phase-field theory of brittle fracture nucleation and propagation, one that accounts for the material strength at large, can naturally capture the tension-compression asymmetry without an energy split. One such theory has been recently proposed by Kumar et al. (2018). Over the past few years, several studies have shown that this theory is capable of accurately describing fracture nucleation and propagation for materials soft and hard under arbitrary monotonic loading conditions. However, a systematic study of the tension-compression asymmetry that emerges from this theory has not yet been reported. This paper does precisely that. In particular, this paper reports a comprehensive study of crack propagation in two problems, one involving a symmetric tension-compression state and the other involving larger compressive stresses at the crack tip. The results are compared with popular energy splits used in literature. The results show that, remarkably, for the second problem, only the complete theory is able to produce experimentally consistent results.

Hybrid systems of two-dimensional (2D) materials (such as graphene-family materials and 2D transition metal dichalcogenides) are attracting much attention due to their distinctive optoelectronic, thermal, mechanical, and chemical properties. The application perspectives of these materials in various fields further expand when enriching those with liquid crystals (LCs) primarily due to their enhanced tunability and functionality. In this study, we report on the hydrothermal synthesis of hybrid nanocomposites composed of MoS$_2$ and rGO and discuss tuning possibilities of their electro-optical properties by incorporating thermotropic LCs. In particular, we demonstrate that the incorporation of 5CB LC increases the sensitivity and charge storage efficiency of the hybrid nanocomposites. In addition, we also present the responsivity, detectivity, and response time properties of the hybrid nanocomposites of MoS$_2$/rGO, both with and without the inclusion of nematic LCs. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the system exhibits a 5CB-induced photocurrent switching effect. In this work, we report on the anisotropic etching characteristics of \b{eta}-Ga2O3 using triethylgallium (TEGa) performed in-situ within an MOCVD chamber. At sufficiently high substrate temperature, TEGa can act as a strong etchant for \b{eta}-Ga2O3 utilizing the suboxide reaction between Ga and Ga2O3. We observe that due to monoclinic crystal structure of \b{eta}-Ga2O3, TEGa etching on both (010) and (001) substrates is highly anisotropic in nature, both in terms of sidewall roughness and lateral etch rate. Smooth sidewalls are only obtained along crystal orientations that minimize sidewall surface energy. Utilizing this technique we also demonstrate deep sub-micron fins with smooth sidewalls and high aspect ratios. Furthermore, we also demonstrate the damage free nature of TEGa etching by fabricating Schottky diodes on the etched surface which display no change in net donor concentration., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, journal paper

Metal-assisted chemical etching of silicon is a promising method for fabricating nanostructures with a high aspect ratio. To define a pattern for the catalyst, lift-off processes are commonly used. The lift-off step however is often a process bottle neck due to low yield, especially for smaller structures. To bypass the lift-off process, other methods such as electroplating can be utilized. In this paper, we suggest an electroplated bi-layer catalyst for vapour phase metal-assisted chemical etching as an alternative to the commonly utilised lift-off process. Samples were successfully etched in vapour, and resulting structures had feature sizes down to 10 nm.

Spatial distributions in current, temperature, state-of-charge and degradation across the plane of large format lithium-ion battery pouch cells can significantly impact their performance, especially at high C-rates. In this paper, a method to smooth out these spatial distributions by grading the electrode microstructure in-the-plane is proposed. A mathematical model of a large format pouch cell is developed and validated against both temperature and voltage experimental data. An analytic solution for the optimal graded electrode that achieves a uniform current distribution across the pouch cell is then derived. The model predicts that the graded electrodes could significantly reduce the likelihood of lithium plating in large format pouch cells, with grading increasing the C-rate at which plating occurs from 2.75C to 5.5C. These results indicate the potential of designing spatially varying electrode architectures to homogenise the response of large format pouch cells and improve their high rate performance.

There is increased interest in the heterogeneous integration of various compound semiconductors with Si for a variety of electronic and photonic applications. This paper focuses on integrating GaAsSb (with absorption in the C-band at 1550nm) with silicon to fabricate photodiodes, leveraging epitaxial layer transfer (ELT) methods. Two ELT techniques, epitaxial lift-off (ELO) and macro-transfer printing (MTP), are compared for transferring GaAsSb films from InP substrates to Si, forming PIN diodes. Characterization through atomic force microscopy (AFM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) exhibits a high-quality, defect-free interface. Current-voltage (IV) measurements and capacitance-voltage (CV) analysis validate the quality and functionality of the heterostructures. Ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs) are a class of memristor which promise low-power, scalable, field-driven analog operation. In order to harness their full potential, operation with identical pulses is targeted. In this paper, several weight update schemes for FTJs are investigated, using either non-identical or identical pulses, and with time delays between the pulses ranging from 1 us to 10 s. Experimentally, a method for achieving non-linear weight update with identical pulses at long programming delays is demonstrated by limiting the switching current via a series resistor. Simulations show that this concept can be expanded to achieve weight update in a 1T1C cell by limiting the switching current through a transistor operating in sub-threshold or saturation mode. This leads to a maximum linearity in the weight update of 86% for a dynamic range (maximum switched polarization) of 30 {\mu}C/cm2. It is further demonstrated via simulation that engineering the device to achieve a narrower switching peak increases the linearity in scaled devices to >93 % for the same range.

This paper reports the results presented in an invited poster during the International Conference on Silicon Carbide and Related Materials (ICSCRM) 2023 held in Sorrento, Italy. The suitability of scanning probe methods based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements is explored to investigate with high spatial resolution the elementary cell of 4H-SiC power MOSFETs. The two-dimensional (2D) cross-sectional maps demonstrated a high spatial resolution of about 5 nm using the SSRM capabilities. Furthermore, the SCM capabilities enabled visualizing the fluctuations of charge carrier concentration across the different parts of the MOSFETs elementary cell.

Hexagonal boron nitride is rapidly gaining interest as a platform for photonic quantum technologies, due to its two-dimensional nature and its ability to host defects deep within its large band gap that may act as room-temperature single-photon emitters. In this review paper we provide an overview of (1) the structure, properties, growth and transfer of hexagonal boron nitride; (2) the creation and assignment of colour centres in hexagonal boron nitride for applications in photonic quantum technologies; and (3) heterostructure devices for the electrical tuning and charge control of colour centres that form the basis for photonic quantum technology devices. Diamond-like carbon thin films have emerged as durable, chemically stable optical coatings for many optical and optoelectronics applications due to their hardness, chemical inertness, and optical transparency. This paper presents a novel high-energy electron cyclotron resonance ion beam sputter deposition technique to fabricate pure diamond-like carbon coatings at room temperature. The chemical composition of the deposited coatings including ratios of sp2/sp3 bonding in the thin films were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results indicate that the sp3 percentage ranges from 45% - 85%. The transmission and reflectance spectra of the coatings were measured from UV to IR ({\lambda}= 185 to 2500 nm) by utilizing a spectrophotometer. The measured spectra were analysed by the Tauc method to determine the optical band gap and Urbach energy and an optical fitting software, which utilizes the model modified by OJL, to extract the refractive index and extinction coefficient. By varying the ion energy, the optical properties were found to be n = 2.30 - 2.51, band gap energy = 0.4 - 0.68 eV, and the Urbach energy = 0.33 - 0.49 eV. This study provides a flexible method for tuning the structural, optical, and electronic properties of diamond-like carbon coatings by controlling the ion energy during deposition.

Due to their tunable material properties, sorptive materials have a wide range of applications in energy storage, water treatment, carbon capture, analytical chemistry, and more. One crucial factor in determining the effectiveness of such materials is their skeletal density, or "true density" because it is often used to calculate key metrics, such as storage capacities. In this paper, we present skeletal density measurements through helium pycnometry for several types of adsorbent carbon materials derived from either corncob, sawdust, coffee grounds, polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), graphitic carbon nitride (GCN), or metal organic frameworks (MOFs). The measured skeletal density of sawdust-based activated carbon was 2.02 +/- 0.05 g/$cm^{ 3}$. The measured skeletal density of coffee-based activated carbon was 2.23 +/- 0.06 $cm^{ 3}$. We also expound upon the impact that skeletal density has upon hydrogen excess adsorption measurements and other calculated engineering quantities. If a skeletal density is underestimated by 10%, it can affect the room temperature excess adsorption by at least 5% at 100 bar and by 7% at 200 bar, depending on the material type., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

Cryogenic fuels, such as liquid hydrogen and liquid natural gas, emerge as versatile and sustainable energy carriers that are revolutionising various industries including aerospace, automotive, marine, and power generation. Thermoplastic polymers can be a suitable alternative to metal seals in cryogenic fuel systems. However, there is limited study about the behaviours of thermoplastics at cryogenic temperatures, especially at liquid hydrogen temperature of 20 Kelvin (K). This paper measured the tensile properties and coefficient of thermal expansion of three popular thermoplastics: PTFE, PEEK and UHMWPE at room temperature (RT), 77 K and 20 K and at four strain rates. Further microscopic analysis was also conducted to understand the failure mechanisms occurring when combining reduced temperature with varying strain rate. The tensile strength of each polymer increased from RT to 77 K and decreased from 77 K to 20 K. Elastic modulus tended to increase, and the strain recorded at failure decreased when reducing temperature from RT to 20 K. From microscopic observation of PEEK and UHMWPE, a reduction in temperature from 77 K to 20 K resulted in a larger instantaneous fracture, with multi-faceted fracture surfaces containing many small mirror like and opaque or misty sub-regions within the fracture zone. For PTFE, the surface morphology exhibited an insensitivity to the increase in strain rate at cryogenic temperatures, and the microscopy showed how the size of dimples found within the fracture interface became smaller when temperature was reduced from 77 K to 20 K. Finally, PEEK was found to contract much less than PTFE and UHMWPE at 20 K, in agreement to it having the highest glass transition temperature of the three polymers, which is normally a good indicator when attempting to identify polymers that will tend to exhibit smaller contraction at cryogenic temperatures.

In this paper, a charge transfer mechanism in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) quantum dots (QDs) is studied. A common dye, Rhodamine 6G (R6G), has been used as fluorescent molecule and QDs of molybdenum disulfide ($\rm{MoS_2}$) and tungsten disulfide ($\rm{WS_2}$) have been used as acceptors of electrons in the photo-induced charge transfer process. The MoS$_2$ and WS$_2$ QDs have been synthesized using ultrasonication method. These QDs have been characterized using transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and fluorimeter. The TEM images of these QDs show well dispersed particles of size $~$2 nm. These QDs show intense fluorescence emission when excited with light having wavelength, $\lambda < $ 350 nm. In presence of light, the photons help in creating charges in fluorescent dye molecule, and TMDCs QDs felicitate the charge transfer in the process. The charge transfer phenomenon has been studied using time correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) set-up, which is a time resolved fluorescence spectroscopic technique. The time resolved fluorescence study shows a drastic change in the fluorescence (FL) lifetime of R6G molecules in the presence of QDs. This decrease in FL lifetime of R6G shows that the MoS$_2$, and WS$_2$ QDs provide additional path to the photo-generated electrons in the excited state of R6G. The significant advancements in perovskite solar cell (PSC) research and development have reignited optimism for the practicality of solar energy. A deeper comprehension of the fundamental mechanisms is essential for enhancing the current solar technology. Impedance spectroscopy (IS) characterization, in conjunction with other analytical methods, stands out as the primary approach for gaining insights into the internal workings of solar cells. The continuous analysis and refinement of electrochemical spectroscopy data for PSCs have unveiled intricate operational details. Despite the ongoing improvements, the absence of a centralized repository for this information poses challenges for tracking progress effectively. This review paper aims to consolidate the physical phenomena behind the development of PSC research, aiming to establish a comprehensive knowledge base on impedance plots, equivalent circuits, and related processes.

Indium selenide, In2Se3, has recently attracted growing interest due to its novel properties, including room temperature ferroelectricity, outstanding photoresponsivity, and exotic in-plane ferroelectricity, which open up new regimes for next generation electronics. In2Se3 also provides the important advantage of tuning the electrical properties of ultra-thin layers with an external electrical and magnetic field, making it a potential platform to study novel two-dimensional physics. Yet, In2Se3 has many different polymorphs, and it has been challenging to synthesize single-phase material, especially using scalable growth methods, as needed for technological applications. In this paper, we use aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy to characterize the microstructure of twin-free single-phase ultra-thin layers of beta-In2Se3, prepared by a unique molecular beam epitaxy approach. We emphasize features of the In2Se3 layer and In2Se3/InP interface which provide evidence for understanding the growth mechanism of the single-phase In2Se3. Nitride ferroelectrics have recently emerged as promising alternatives to oxide ferroelectrics due to their compatibility with mainstream semiconductor processing. ScAlN, in particular, has exhibited remarkable piezoelectric coupling strength ($K^2$) comparable to that of lithium niobate (LN), making it a valuable choice for RF filters in wireless communications. Recently, ScAlN has sparked interest in its use for nanophotonic devices, chiefly due to its large bandgap facilitating operation in blue wavelengths coupled with promises of enhanced nonlinear optical properties such as a large second-order susceptibility ($\chi^{(2)}$). It is still an open question whether ScAlN can outperform oxide ferroelectrics concerning the Pockels effect -- an electro-optic coupling extensively utilized in optical communications devices. In this paper, we present a comprehensive theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration of ScAlN's Pockels effect. Our findings reveal that the electro-optic coupling of ScAlN, despite being weak at low Sc concentration, may be significantly enhanced at high levels of Sc doping, which points the direction of continued research efforts to unlock the full potential of ScAlN.

Surface diffusion and surface electromigration may lead to a morphological instability of thin solid films and nanowires. In this paper two nonlinear analyzes of a morphological instability are developed for a single-crystal cylindrical nanowire that is subjected to the axial current. These treatments extend the conventional linear stability analyzes without surface electromigration, that manifest a Rayleigh-Plateau instability. A weakly nonlinear analysis is done slightly above the Rayleigh-Plateau (longwave) instability threshold. It results in a one-dimensional Sivashinsky amplitude equation that describes a blow-up of a surface perturbation amplitude in a finite time. This is a signature of a formation of an axisymmetric spike singularity of a cylinder radius, which leads to a wire pinch-off and separation into a disjoint segments. The scaling analysis of the amplitude spike singularity is performed, and the time-and-electric field-dependent dimensions of the spike are characterized. A weakly nonlinear multi-scale analysis is done at the arbitrary distance above a longwave or a shortwave instability threshold. The time-and-electric field-dependent Fourier amplitudes of the major instability modes are derived and characterized.

3D bicontinuous two-phase materials are increasingly gaining interest because of their unique multifunctional characteristics and advancements in techniques to fabricate them. Due to their complex topological and structural properties, it still has been nontrivial to develop explicit microstructure-dependent formulas to predict accurately their physical properties. A primary goal of the present paper is to ascertain various microstructural and transport characteristics of five different models of triply periodic bicontinuous porous materials at a porosity $\phi_1=1/2$: those in which the two-phase interfaces are the Schwarz P, Schwarz D and Schoen G minimal surfaces as well as two different pore-channel structures. We ascertain their spectral densities, pore-size distribution functions, local volume-fraction variances, and hyperuniformity order metrics and then use this information to estimate certain effective transport properties via closed-form microstructure-property formulas. Specifically, we estimate the recently introduced time-dependent diffusion spreadability exactly from the spectral density. Moreover, we accurately estimate the fluid permeability of such porous materials from the second moment of the pore-size function and the formation factor, a measure of the tortuosity of the pore space. We also rigorously bound the permeability from above using the spectral density. For the five models with identical cubic unit cells, we find that the permeability, inverse of the specific surface, hyperuniformity order metric, pore-size second moment and long-time spreadability behavior are all positively correlated and rank order the structures in exactly the same way. We also conjecture what structures maximize the fluid permeability for arbitrary porosities and show that this conjecture must be true in the extreme porosity limits by identifying the corresponding optimal structures., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, and 5 tables

Electrically tunable optical devices present diverse functionalities for manipulating electromagnetic waves by leveraging elements capable of reversibly switching between different optical states. This adaptability in adjusting their responses to electromagnetic waves after fabrication is crucial for developing more efficient and compact optical systems for a broad range of applications including sensing, imaging, telecommunications, and data storage. Chalcogenide-based phase change materials (PCMs) have shown great promise due to their stable, non-volatile phase transition between amorphous and crystalline states. Nonetheless, optimizing the switching parameters of PCM devices and maintaining their stable operation over thousands of cycles with minimal variation can be challenging. In this paper, we report on the critical role of PCM pattern as well as electrical pulse form in achieving reliable and stable switching, extending the operational lifetime of the device beyond 13,000 switching events. To achieve this, we have developed a computer-aided algorithm that monitors optical changes in the device and adjusts the applied voltage in accordance with the phase transformation process, thereby significantly enhancing the lifetime of these reconfigurable devices. Our findings reveal that patterned PCM structures show significantly higher endurance compared to blanket PCM thin films.

Bioinspiration has widely been demonstrated to be a powerful approach for the design of innovative structures and devices. Recently, this concept has been extended to the field of elasticity, dynamics, and metamaterials. In this paper, we propose a seashell-inspired metasensor that can simultaneously perform spatial frequency mapping and act as a polarizer. The structure emerges from a universal parametric design that encompasses diverse spiral geometries with varying circular cross sections and curvature radii, all leading to tonotopic behavior. Adoption of an optimization process leads to a planar geometry that enables us to simultaneously achieve tonotopy for orthogonally polarized modes, leading to the possibility to control polarization as well as the spatial distribution of frequency maxima along the spiral axis. Suspended in the gas phase, 1D inorganic nanoparticles (nanotubes and nanowires) grow to hundreds of microns in a second and can be thus directly assembled into freestanding network materials. The corresponding process continuously transforms gas precursors into aerosols into aerogels into macroscopic nanotextiles. By enabling the assembly of very high aspect ratio nanoparticles, this processing route has translated into high-performance structural materials, transparent conductors and battery anodes, amongst other embodiments. This paper reviews progress in the application of such manufacturing process to nanotubes and nanowires. It analyses 1D nanoparticle growth through floating catalyst chemical vapour deposition (FCCVD), in terms of reaction selectivity, scalability and its inherently ultra-fast growth rates (107-108 atoms per second) up to 1000 times faster than for substrate CVD. We summarise emerging descriptions of the formation of aerogels through percolation theory and multi-scale models for the collision and aggregation of 1D nanoparticles. The paper shows that macroscopic ensembles of 1D nanoparticles resemble textiles in their porous network structure, high flexibility and damage-tolerance. Their bulk properties depend strongly on inter-particle properties and are dominated by alignment and volume fraction. Nickel-based layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are promising electrode materials in the fields of energy storage (supercapacitors) and conversion (urea oxidation). The rational construction of atomic and electronic structure is crucial for nickel-based LDHs to realize their satisfactory electrochemical performance. Herein, we report a facile, ecofriendly, one-step synthesis process to construct petal-like oxygen-deficient NiAl-LDH nanosheets for hybrid super-capacitors (HSCs) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). The asprepared NiAl-LDH nanosheets with rich oxygen vacancies possess a large specific surface area of 216.6 m2 g-1 and a desirable electronic conductivity of 3.45 * 10-4 S cm-1 to deliver an ultra-high specific capacitance of 2801 F g-1 (700 C g-1) at 1 A g-1. Furthermore, high specific energy of 50.0 W h kg-1 at 400 W kg-1 and excellent cycle stability with 91% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles are achieved by the NiAl-LDHs/CFP (carbon fiber paper) (+)//YP-80F (a commercial activated carbon) (-) HSC. Besides, NiAl-LDH nanosheets also work as an efficient electrocatalyst for UOR, which only requires 1.42 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode to drive 10 mA cm-2 in 1 mol L-1 KOH with 0.33 mol L-1 urea. This remarkable performance is superior to most reported values of previous candidates owing to the thin structure of NiAl-LDH nanosheets for exposing more active sites and abundant oxygen vacancies. In addition, various reaction parameters are investigated to optimize the electrochemical performance. In general, this work paves a new way for the architecture of multifunctional nanostructured energy materials.

Digital image correlation is a widely used technique in the field of experimental mechanics. In fracture mechanics, determining the precise location of the crack tip is crucial. In this paper, we introduce a universal crack tip detection algorithm based on displacement and strain fields obtained by digital image correlation. Iterative crack tip correction formulas are discovered by applying deep symbolic regression guided by physical unit constraints to a dataset of simulated cracks under mode I, II and mixed-mode conditions with variable T-stress. For the training dataset, we fit the Williams series expansion with super-singular terms to the simulated displacement fields at randomly chosen origins around the actual crack tip. We analyse the discovered formulas and apply the most promising one to digital image correlation data obtained from uniaxial and biaxial fatigue crack growth experiments of AA2024-T3 sheet material. Throughout the experiments, the crack tip positions are reliably detected leading to improved stability of the crack propagation curves.

This paper investigates the thermoelectric properties of solid polymer electrolytes (SPE) containing lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) and sodium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (NaTFSI) salts, along with carbon-based additives of various dimensionalities. Increasing salt concentration leads to higher Seebeck coefficients as a result of the increasing number of free charge carriers and additional, superimposed effects by ion-ion and ion-polymer interactions. NaTFSI-based electrolytes exhibit negative Seebeck coefficients (up to $S = -1.5\,\mathrm{mV\,K^{-1}}$), indicating dominant mobility of $\mathrm{TFSI^-}$ ions. Quasi-one-dimensional carbon nanotubes (CNTs) increase the Seebeck coefficient by a factor of 3. Planar, two-dimensional graphite flakes (GF) moderately enhance it, affecting $\mathrm{Na^+}$ and $\mathrm{TFSI^-}$ ion mobilities and electronic conductivity. Bulky, three-dimensional carbon black (CB) additives induce a unique behavior where the sign of the Seebeck coefficient changes with temperature, presumably due to interaction with $\mathrm{TFSI^-}$ ions within the CB structure. Changes in activation energy and Vogel temperature with salt concentration suggest structural and mechanical modifications in the polymer matrix. The choice of carbon-based additives and salt concentration significantly influences the thermoelectric properties of SPEs thermoelectric properties, providing insights into their potential for thermoelectric applications. Sodium-based electrolytes emerge as promising, sustainable alternatives to lithium-based systems, aligning with sustainable energy research demands.

Frictional losses are responsible for significant energy waste in many practical applications, and superlubricity with a coefficient of friction lower than 0.01 is the goal of tribologists. In this paper, metal-on-polymer contact was analysed and close to superlubricity conditions for this material configuration were explored. A new lubricant has been proposed hinge on the phosphorus-based ionic liquid and carbon nanotubes as thickeners. Additionally, carbon nanotube mesh was doped with copper nanoparticles that allowed for the close to superlubricity state in a mild steel/polymer contact configuration under low normal load conditions. The adsorption of phosphorus onto metallic and polymer surfaces has been reported in EDS analysis. The formulation of the new lubricant allowed for stable dispersion with a carbon nanotube content as low as 0.1% wt. The carbon nanotubes and Cu nanoparticles have been analysed using TEM and SEM imaging. A tribological test in a block-on-ring system has been carried out. Flux jumps observed in high-$J_c$ Nb$_3$Sn conductors are urgent problems to construct high field superconducting magnets. The low-field instabilities usually reduce the current-carrying capability and thus cause the premature quench of Nb$_3$Sn coils at low magnetic field. In this paper, we explore suppressing the flux jumps by ferromagnetic (FM) layer. Firstly, we experimentally and theoretically investigate the flux jumps of Nb$_3$Sn/FM hybrid wires exposed to a magnetic field loop with constant sweeping rate. Comparing with bare Nb$_3$Sn and Nb$_3$Sn/Cu wires, we reveal two underlying mechanisms that the suppression of flux jumps is mainly attributed to the thermal effect of FM layer for the case of lower sweeping rate, whereas both thermal and electromagnetic effects play a crucial role for the case of higher sweeping rate. Furthermore, we explore the flux jumps of Nb$_3$Sn/FM hybrid wires exposed to AC magnetic fields with amplitude $B_{a0}$ and frequency $\rm\omega$. We build up the phase diagrams of flux jumps in the plane $\rm\omega$-$B_{a0}$ for bare Nb$_{3}$Sn wire, Nb$_{3}$Sn/Cu wire and Nb$_{3}$Sn/FM wire, respectively. We stress that the region of flux jumps of Nb$_{3}$Sn/FM wire is much smaller than the other two wires, which indicates that the Nb$_{3}$Sn/FM wire has significant advantage over merely increasing the heat capacity. The findings shed light on suppression of the flux jumps by utilizing FM materials, which is useful for developing new type of high-$J_c$ Nb$_{3}$Sn conductors.

Thermoelectric materials, which can convert waste heat into electricity or act as solid-state Peltier coolers, are emerging as key technologies to address global energy shortages and environmental sustainability. However, discovering materials with high thermoelectric conversion efficiency is a complex and slow process. The emerging field of high-throughput material discovery demonstrates its potential to accelerate the development of new thermoelectric materials combining high efficiency and low cost. The synergistic integration of high-throughput material processing and characterization techniques with machine learning algorithms can form an efficient closed-loop process to generate and analyze broad data sets to discover new thermoelectric materials with unprecedented performances. Meanwhile, the recent development of advanced manufacturing methods provides exciting opportunities to realize scalable, low-cost, and energy-efficient fabrication of thermoelectric devices. This review provides an overview of recent advances in discovering thermoelectric materials using high-throughput methods, including processing, characterization, and screening. Advanced manufacturing methods of thermoelectric devices are also introduced to realize the broad impacts of thermoelectric materials in power generation and solid-state cooling. In the end, this paper also discusses the future research prospects and directions.

We present a simulation of various active learning strategies for the discovery of polymer solar cell donor/acceptor pairs using data extracted from the literature spanning $\sim$20 years by a natural language processing pipeline. While data-driven methods have been well established to discover novel materials faster than Edisonian trial-and-error approaches, their benefits have not been quantified for material discovery problems that can take decades. Our approach demonstrates a potential reduction in discovery time by approximately 75 %, equivalent to a 15 year acceleration in material innovation. Our pipeline enables us to extract data from greater than 3300 papers which is $\sim$5 times larger and therefore more diverse than similar data sets reported by others. We also trained machine learning models to predict the power conversion efficiency and used our model to identify promising donor-acceptor combinations that are as yet unreported. We thus demonstrate a pipeline that goes from published literature to extracted material property data which in turn is used to obtain data-driven insights. Our insights include active learning strategies that can be used to train strong predictive models of material properties or be robust to the initial material system used. This work provides a valuable framework for data-driven research in materials science.

In this paper, an overview of the wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductors for radiation detection applications is presented. The recent advancements in the fabrication of high-quality wafers have enabled the remarkable WBG semiconductor device applications. The most common 4H-SiC, GaN and \b{eta}-Ga2O3 devices used for radiation detection are described. The 4H-SiC and GaN devices have already achieved exceptional results in the detection of alpha particles and neutrons, thermal neutrons in particular. While \b{eta}-Ga2O3 devices have not yet reached the same level of technological maturity (compared to 4H-SiC and GaN), their current achievements for X-ray detection indicate great potential and promising prospects for future applications.

The phase field method has gathered significant attention in the past decade due to its versatile applications in engineering contexts, including fatigue crack propagation modeling. Particularly, the phase field cohesive zone method (PF-CZM) has emerged as a promising approach for modeling fracture behavior in quasi-brittle materials, such as concrete. The present contribution expands the applicability of the PF-CZM to include the modeling of fatigue-induced crack propagation. This study critically examines the validity of the extended PF-CZM approach by evaluating its performance across various fatigue behaviours, encompassing hysteretic behavior, S-N curves, fatigue creep curves, and the Paris law. The experimental investigations and validation span a diverse spectrum of loading scenarios, encompassing pre- and post-peak cyclic loading, as well as low- and high-cyclic fatigue loading. The validation process incorporates 2D and 3D boundary value problems, considering mode I and mixed-modes fatigue crack propagation. The results obtained from this study show a wide range of validity, underscoring the remarkable potential of the proposed PF-CZM approach to accurately capture the propagation of fatigue cracks in concrete-like materials. Furthermore, the paper outlines recommendations to improve the predictive capabilities of the model concerning key fatigue characteristics.

Halide perovskites are widely used as components of electronic and optoelectronic devices such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), optically pumped lasers, field-effect transistors, photodetectors, and $\gamma$-detectors. Despite this wide range of applications, the construction of an electrically pumped perovskite laser remains challenging. In this paper, we numerically justify that mixing two perovskite compounds with different halide elements can lead to optical properties suitable for electrical pumping. As a reference, the chosen model material was CsPbBr$_3$, whose performance as a part of lasers has been widely recognised, with some Br atoms substituted by I at specific sites. In particular, a strong enhancement of the low-energy absorption peaks has been obtained using the \textit{ab initio} Bethe-Salpeter equation. Based on these results, we propose specific architectures of ordered doping that could be realised by epitaxial growth. Efficient light emission from the bottom of the conduction band is expected.

The significant surge in energy use and escalating environmental concerns have sparked worldwide interest towards the study and implementation of solar cell technology. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have garnered remarkable attention as an emerging third-generation solar cell technology. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of lead-free mixed halide double perovskites in the context of their potential uses in solar cell technology. Through the previous studies of various mixed halide double perovskite materials as potential absorber layer materials, it has been observed that Cs$_2$TiI$_{6-x}$Br$_x$ possesses promising characteristics. In this study, simulations were conducted using SCAPS-1D software to explore all possible combinations for x= 0 to 6. The materials for the Hole Transport Layer (HTL) and Electron Transport Layer (ETL) and absorber layer, along with their optimal thicknesses, are selected to yield the most promising results in terms of open-circuit voltage (V$_{oc}$), short-circuit current density (J$_{sc}$), fill factor (FF), and power conversion efficiency. A novel tolerance factor is employed to assess structural stability of perovskites. FTO/Cu$_2$O/Cs$_2$TiI$_5$Br$_1$/WS$_2$ emerges as the best combination in terms of the efficiency with 19.03% but FTO/Cu$_2$O/Cs$_2$TiI$_2$Br$_4$/WS$_2$ shows good stability with 13.31% efficiency.

Dislocation slip and deformation twin are widely regarded as two important mechanisms of active competition in the process of plastic deformation. Calculating and comparing the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) of two deformation modes are the key to discussing the mechanical properties reflected by different mechanisms in crystals. Here, the paper proposes a model to predict the CRSS of discrete twins, resembling thin layers, using the elastic anisotropy theory and a macroscopic energy perspective. In addition, the directionality of deformation twinning is also verified. We investigated twinning in FCC crystals to illustrate the methodology, and predicted the CRSS of twinning under different variables such as temperature and strain rate, both of which were in excellent agreement with experimental and other theory results. It draws the conclusion that we can promote twinning nucleation by applying shear stress along the <112> direction to reduce the interface energy as a resistance term and increase the difference in strain energy for twinning nucleation. In alloy solidification, the transport processes of heat and solute result in morphological instability of the interface, forming different patterns of solidification structure and determining the mechanical properties of components. As the first observable phenomenon of the morphological instabilities, the planar instability influences the subsequent stages significantly, deserving in-depth investigations. In this paper, the planar instability in alloy solidification under varying conditions is studied. Firstly, the dynamical evolution of the planar instability is performed by the theoretical model and phase-field model, respectively. Secondly, to represent the history-dependence of solidification, the varying parameters are adopted in the simulations. Then the criterion of the planar instability under the varying conditions is discussed. This paper considers the critical parameters of the planar instability are the excess free energy at the interface and corresponding interfacial energy. Finally, to validate the criterion, the comparisons between the phase-field model and theoretical model are carried out, showing good consistency. Moreover, solidification processes with different preferred crystallographic orientations are performed, demonstrating the effect mechanism of the excess free energy and interfacial energy on the planar instability. High entropy alloys (HEAs) have attracted substantial interest in recent years. Thus far, most investigations have focused on their applications as structural materials rather than functional materials. In this paper, we show that FeMnNiAlCr HEAs can potentially be applied as both a structural and functional material for high-efficiency concentrated solar thermal power (CSP) systems working at >700 degrees C. The HEA itself would be used in high-temperature tubing to carry working fluids, while its surface oxide would act as a high-efficiency solar thermal absorber. These HEAs have demonstrated yield strengths 2-3x greater than that of stainless steel at 700 degrees C and a creep lifetime >800 h at 700 degrees C under a typical CSP tubing mechanical load of 35 MPa. Their Mn-rich surface oxides maintain a high optical-to-thermal conversion efficiency of ~87% under 1000x solar concentration for 20 simulated day-night thermal cycles between 750 degrees C and environmental temperature. These HEAs have also sustained immersion in unpurified bromide molten salts for 14 days at 750{\deg}C with <2% weight loss, in contrast to 70% weight loss from a 316 stainless steel reference. The simultaneous achievement of promising mechanical, optical, and thermochemical properties in this FeMnNiAlCr system opens the door to new applications of HEAs in solar energy harvesting.

Magnetic refrigeration (MR) based on the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is a promising alternative to conventional vapor compression refrigeration techniques. The cooling efficiency of a magnetic refrigerator depends on its refrigeration capacity and operation frequency. Existing refrigerators possess limited cooling efficiency due to the low operating frequency (around tens of Hz). Theory predicts that reducing geometrical effects can increase the operation frequency by reducing the relaxation time of a magnetic material. As compared to other shapes, magnetocaloric wires transfer heat most effectively to a surrounding environment, due to their enhanced surface area. The wire shape also yields a good mechanical response, reducing the relaxation time and consequently increasing the operation frequency of the cooling device. Experiments have validated the theoretical predictions. By assembling microwires with different magnetocaloric properties and Curie temperatures into a laminate structure, a table-like magnetocaloric bed can be created and used as an active cooling device for micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) and nano-electro-mechanical system (NEMS). This paper assesses recent progress in the development of magnetocaloric microwires and sheds light on the important factors affecting the magnetocaloric behavior and cooling efficiency in microwire systems. Challenges, opportunities, and strategies regarding the development of advanced magnetocaloric microwires are also discussed.

Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) is an established method for producing high-purity thin films, but it typically necessitates the pre- and post-processing of a mask to produce structures. This paper presents a novel maskless patterning technique that enables area selective CVD of gold. A focused electron beam is used to decompose the metal-organic precursor Au(acac)Me$_2$ locally, thereby creating an autocatalytically active seed layer for subsequent CVD with the same precursor. The procedure can be included in the same CVD cycle without the need for clean room lithographic processing. Moreover, it operates at low temperatures of 80 {\deg}C, over 200 K lower than standard CVD temperatures for this precursor, reducing thermal load on the specimen. Given that electron beam seeding operates on any even moderately conductive surface, the process does not constrain device design. This is demonstrated by the example of vertical nanostructures with high aspect ratios of around 40:1 and more. The oxide-metal-oxide architecture is a promising approach for the development of the high-performance indium-free transparent electrode (TE), which is a key component of various optoelectronic applications such as solar cells, organic LEDs, and touchscreen panels. Here in this work, we have shown high-performance TE consisting of TiO2/Ag/TiO2 (TAT), with the incorporation of a copper seed layer. The seed layer increases the wettability and improves the adhesion of deposited Ag film on the bottom TiO2 layer. Before the experimental realization, optical modeling is performed by using MATLAB code based on the transfer matrix method. The optimum thickness obtained from the simulation is 30 nm for both undercoat and overcoat TiO2 with the average transmittance in the visible region >85% with the Ag thickness of 9nm. With inputs from the optical modeling, TEs were experimentally realized with and without the Cu seed layer. It has been found that the TE with an additional sputtered Cu (1 nm) seed layer is essential for the smooth growth of silver film and shows better electro-optical performance (sheet resistance < 10 and average transmittance in the visible spectral range > 80%) than TAT-TE without any seed layer. Recently it was suggested that the Unruh effect might occur in metamaterials at accessible Unruh temperatures. In some cases, the class of metamaterials that may be useful for this observation has a Klein instead of a Minkowski signature. Thus, confirmation of this effect in those materials requires more careful analysis. In this paper, we use the path integral formulation of Quantum Field Theory to investigate the analogous to the Unruh effect in Kleinian geometry. We calculate the analogous of the Unruh temperature for a scalar theory, provided we restrict the action in a convenient subspace of the Kleinian spacetime. As a consequence, we obtain the diamond temperature for a static observer with a finite lifetime.
