We respond to David Steigmann's discussion of our paper "A general theory for anisotropic Kirchhoff-Love shells with in-plane bending of embedded fibers, Math. Mech. His discussion allows us to clarify two misleading statements in our original paper, and confirm that its formulation is fully consistent with the formulation of Steigmann. Traditional design cycles for new materials and assemblies have two fundamental drawbacks. The underlying physical relationships are often too complex to be precisely calculated and described. Aside from that, many unknown uncertainties, such as exact manufacturing parameters or materials composition, dominate the real assembly behavior. Machine learning (ML) methods overcome these fundamental limitations through data-driven learning. In addition, modern approaches can specifically increase system knowledge. Representation Learning allows the physical, and if necessary, even symbolic interpretation of the learned solution. In this way, the most complex physical relationships can be considered and quickly described. Furthermore, generative ML approaches can synthesize possible morphologies of the materials based on defined conditions to visualize the effects of uncertainties. The state-of-the-art in paper mechanics calls for novel experimental data covering the full-field hygro-expansion of inter-fiber bonds in paper, i.e., the 3D morphological changes and inter-fiber interactions. Therefore, a recently developed full-field single fiber hygro-expansion measurement methodology based on global digital height correlation is extended to orthogonally bonded inter-fiber bonds, to investigate their full-field quasi-3D hygroscopic behavior. A sample holder has been developed which enables the quasi-3D characterization of the initial geometry of individual inter-fiber bonds, including the fiber thickness and width along the length of the fibers as well as the degree of wrap around and contact area of the bond, which are vital for understanding the inter-fiber bond hygro-mechanics. Full-field hygroscopic testing revealed novel insights on the inter-fiber interactions: (i) the transverse hygro-expansion of each fiber strongly reduces when approaching the bonded area, due to the significantly lower longitudinal hygro-expansion of the other bonded fiber. (ii) The relatively large transverse strain of one fiber stretches the other crossing fiber in its longitudinal direction, thereby significantly contributing to the sheet scale hygro-expansion. (iii) Out-of-plane bending is observed in the bonded region which is driven by the significant difference in transverse and longitudinal hygro-expansion of, respectively, the top and bottom fiber constituting the bond. A bi-layer laminate model is derived to rationalize the bending deformation and an adequate match is found with the experimental data. Under the assumption of zero bending, which represents constrained inter-fiber bonds inside a paper sheet, the model is able to predict the contribution of the transverse strain in the bonded regions to the sheet-scale hygro-expansion., Comment: 30 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables

There has been a growing effort to replace manual extraction of data from research papers with automated data extraction based on natural language processing, language models, and recently, large language models (LLMs). Although these methods enable efficient extraction of data from large sets of research papers, they require a significant amount of up-front effort, expertise, and coding. In this work we propose the ChatExtract method that can fully automate very accurate data extraction with minimal initial effort and background, using an advanced conversational LLM. ChatExtract consists of a set of engineered prompts applied to a conversational LLM that both identify sentences with data, extract that data, and assure the data's correctness through a series of follow-up questions. These follow-up questions largely overcome known issues with LLMs providing factually inaccurate responses. ChatExtract can be applied with any conversational LLMs and yields very high quality data extraction. In tests on materials data we find precision and recall both close to 90% from the best conversational LLMs, like ChatGPT-4. We demonstrate that the exceptional performance is enabled by the information retention in a conversational model combined with purposeful redundancy and introducing uncertainty through follow-up prompts. These results suggest that approaches similar to ChatExtract, due to their simplicity, transferability, and accuracy are likely to become powerful tools for data extraction in the near future. Earlier works in literature on the hygro-expansion of paper state that the larger hygro-expansivity of freely compared to restrained dried handsheets is due to structural differences between the fibers inside the handsheet. To unravel this hypothesis, first, the hygro-expansion of freely and restrained dried, hardwood and softwood handsheets has been characterized. Subsequently, the transient full-field hygro-expansion (longitudinal, transverse, and shear strain) of fibers extracted from these handsheets was measured using global digital height correlation, from which the micro-fibril angle was deduced. The hygro-expansivity of each individual fiber was tested before and after a wetting period, during which the fiber's moisture content is maximized, to analyze if a restrained dried fiber can "transform" into a freely dried fiber. It was found that the longitudinal hygro-expansion of the freely dried fibers is significantly larger than the restrained dried fibers, consistent with the sheet-scale differences. The difference in micro-fibril angle between the freely and restrained dried fibers is a possible explanation for this difference, but merely for the hardwood fibers, which are able to "transform" to freely dried fibers after being soaked in water. In contrast, this "transformation" does not happen in softwood fibers, even after full immersion in water for a day. Various mechanisms have been studied to explain the observations on freely and restrained dried hardwood and softwood, fiber and handsheets including analysis of the fibers' lumen and cross-sectional shape. Quasi-brittle materials endowed with (statistically) self-similar hierarcical microstructures show distinct failure patterns that deviate from the standard scenario of damage accumulation followed by crack nucleation-and-growth. Here we study the failure of paper sheets with hierarchical slice patterns as well as non-hierarchical and unpatterned reference samples, considering both uncracked samples and samples containing a macroscopic crack. Failure is studied under displacement-controlled tensile loading as well as under creep conditions. Acoustic emission records and surface strain patterns are recorded alongside stress-strain and creep curves. The measurements demonstrate that hierarchical patterning efficiently mitigates against strain localization and crack propagation. In tensile loading, this results in a significantly increased residual strength of cracked samples. Under creep conditions, for a given range of lifetimes hierarchically patterned samples are found to sustain larger creep strains at higher stress levels; their creep curves show unusual behavior characterized by multiple creep rate minima due to the repeated arrest of emergent localization bands.

The transient dimensional changes during \textit{hygro}-expansion and \textit{hydro}-expansion of freely and restrained dried, softwood and hardwood sheets and fibers is monitored, to unravel the governing micro-mechanisms occurring during gradual water saturation. The response of individual fibers is measured using a full-field global digital height correlation method, which has been extended to monitor the transient \textit{hydro}-expansion of fibers from dry to fully saturated. The \textit{hygro}- and \textit{hydro}-expansion is larger for freely versus restrained dried and softwood versus hardwood handsheets. The transient sheet-scale \textit{hydro}-expansion reveals a sudden strain and moisture content step. It is postulated that the driving mechanism is the moisture-induced softening of the so-called "dislocated regions" in the fiber's cellulose micro-fibrils, unlocking further fiber swelling. The strain step is negligible for restrained dried handsheets, which is attributed to the "dislocated cellulose regions" being locked in their stretched configuration during restrained drying, which is supported by the single fiber \textit{hydro}-expansion measurements. Finally, an inter-fiber bond model is exploited and adapted to predict the sheet-scale \textit{hygro}-expansion from the fiber level characteristics. The model correctly predicts the qualitative differences between freely versus restrained dried and softwood versus hardwood handsheets, yet, its simplified geometry does not allow for more quantitative predictions of the sheet-scale \textit{hydro}-expansion., Comment: 37 pages; 12 figures; 5 tables

Paper offers a low-cost and widely available substrate for electronics. It posses alternative characteristics to silicon, as it shows low density and high-flexibility, together with biodegradability. Solution processable materials, such as hybrid perovskites, also present light and flexible features, together with a huge tunability of the material composition with varying optical properties. In this study, we combine paper substrates with halide-mixed perovskites for the creation of low-cost and easy-to-fabricate perovskite-on-paper photodetectors with a broadband-tunable spectral response. From the bandgap tunability of halide-mixed perovskites we create photodetectors with a cut-off spectral onset that ranges from the NIR to the green, by increasing the bromide content on MAPb(I$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_3$ perovskite alloys. The devices show a fast and efficient response. The best performances are observed for the pure I and Br perovskite compositions, with a maximum responsivity of 376 mA/W on the MAPbBr$_3$ device. This study provides an example of the wide range of possibilities that the combination of solution processable materials with paper substrates offer for the development of low-cost, biodegradable and easy-to-fabricate devices., Comment: 3 main text figures, 8 supp info figures

We investigate a prototype application for machine-readable literature. The program is called "pyDataRecognition" and serves as an example of a data-driven literature search, where the literature search query is an experimental data-set provided by the user. The user uploads a powder pattern together with the radiation wavelength. The program compares the user data to a database of existing powder patterns associated with published papers and produces a rank ordered according to their similarity score. The program returns the digital object identifier (doi) and full reference of top ranked papers together with a stack plot of the user data alongside the top five database entries. Direct detection experiments for light (sub-GeV) dark matter are making enormous leaps in reaching previously unexplored theory space. The need for accurate characterizations of target responses has led to a growing interplay between particle and condensed matter physics. This white paper summarizes recent progress on direct detection calculations that utilize state-of-the-art numerical tools in condensed matter physics and effective field theory techniques. Plasmonic modes offer the potential to achieve PetaVolts per meter fields, that would transform the current paradigm in collider development in addition to non-collider searches in fundamental physics. PetaVolts per meter plasmonics relies on collective oscillations of the free electron Fermi gas inherent in the conduction band of materials that have a suitable combination of constituent atoms and ionic lattice structure. As the conduction band free electron density, at equilibrium, can be as high as $\rm 10^{24}cm^{-3}$, electromagnetic fields of the order of $\rm 0.1 \sqrt{\rm n_0(10^{24}cm^{-3})} ~ PVm^{-1}$ can be sustained by plasmonic modes. Engineered materials not only allow highly tunable material properties but quite critically make it possible to overcome disruptive instabilities that dominate the interactions in bulk media. Due to rapid shielding by the free electron Fermi gas, dielectric effects are strongly suppressed. Because the ionic lattice, the corresponding electronic energy bands and the free electron gas are governed by quantum mechanical effects, comparisons with plasmas are merely notional. Based on this framework, it is critical to address various challenges that underlie PetaVolts per meter plasmonics including stable excitation of plasmonic modes while accounting for their effects on the ionic lattice and the electronic energy band structure over femtosecond timescales. We summarize the ongoing theoretical and experimental efforts as well as map out strategies for the future. Extreme plasmonic fields can shape the future by not only bringing tens of TeV to multi-PeV center-of-mass-energies within reach but also by opening novel pathways in non-collider HEP. In view of this promise, we invite the scientific community to help realize the immense potential of PV/m plasmonics and call for significant expansion of the US and international R\&D program., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

Paper holds the promise to replace silicon substrates in applications like internet of things or disposable electronics that require ultra-low-cost electronic components and an environmentally friendly electronic waste management. In the last years, spurred by the abovementioned properties of paper as a substrate and the exceptional electronic, mechanical and optical properties of van der Waals (vdW) materials, many research groups have worked towards the integration of vdW materials-based devices on paper. Recently, a method to deposit a continuous film of densely packed interconnects of vdW materials on paper by simply rubbing the vdW crystals against the rough surface of paper has been presented. This method utilizes the weak interlayer vdW interactions and allows cleaving of the crystals into micro platelets through the abrasion against the paper. Here, we aim to illustrate the general character and the potential of this technique by fabricating films of 39 different vdW materials (including superconductors, semi-metals, semiconductors, and insulators) on standard copier paper. We have thoroughly characterized their optical properties showing their high optical quality: one can easily resolve the absorption band edge of semiconducting vdW materials and even the excitonic features present in some vdW materials with high exciton binding energy. We also measured the electrical resistivity for several vdW materials films on paper finding exceptionally low values, which are in some cases, orders of magnitude lower than those reported for analogous films produced by inkjet printing. Paper has the potential to dramatically reduce the cost of electronic components. In fact, paper is 10 000 times cheaper than crystalline silicon, motivating the research to integrate electronic materials on paper substrates. Among the different electronic materials, van der Waals materials are attracting the interest of the scientific community working on paper-based electronics because of the combination of high electrical performance and mechanical flexibility. Up to now, different methods have been developed to pattern conducting, semiconducting and insulating van der Waals materials on paper but the integration of superconductors remains elusive. Here, the deposition of NbSe2, an illustrative van der Waals superconductor, on standard copy paper is demonstrated. Atomic force microscopy-based nanoindentation (AFM-NI) enables characterization of the basic mechanical properties of wood pulp fibers in conditions representative of the state inside a paper sheet. Determination of the mechanical properties under different loads is critical for the success of increasingly advanced computational models to understand, predict and improve the behavior of paper and paperboard. Here, AFM-NI was used to indent fibers transverse to and along the longitudinal axis of the fiber. Indentation moduli and hardness were obtained for relative humidity from 25 % to 75 %. The hardness and the indentation modulus exhibit moisture dependency, decreasing by 75 % and 50 %, respectively, over the range tested. The determined indentation moduli were combined with previous work to estimate the longitudinal and transverse elastic modulus of the fiber wall. Due to the relatively low indentation moduli, the elastic constants are also low compared to values obtained via single fiber testing.

This paper deals with the preparation and characterization of conductive and flexible sheets based on graphite nanoplates (GNP) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Highly porous GNP nanopaper were prepared by filtration from a GNP suspension in solvent. Subsequently, the impregnation strategy was pursued to obtain a composite material. By varying the concentration of the solution to be impregnated and the deposition time, PDMS/GNP nanopapers are produced with a range of PDMS content, porosity and density. Thermal diffusivity of the films (both in-plane and cross-plane) were measured and correlated with the structure of the nanopapers. Based on the results found and considering the restraints, three formulations were further investigated for their physical, thermal and mechanical properties. Highly flexible, tough and conductive (up to 25 W/mK) nanopapers were obtained, for possible application in modern electronic devices.

Paper based thermoresistive sensors are fabricated by rubbing WS2 powder against a piece of standard copier paper, like the way a pencil is used to write on paper. The abrasion between the layered material and the rough paper surface erodes the material, breaking the weak van der Waals interlayer bonds, yielding a film of interconnected platelets. The resistance of WS2 presents a strong temperature dependence, as expected for a semiconductor material in which charge transport is due to thermally activated carriers. This strong temperature dependence makes the paper supported WS2 devices extremely sensitive to small changes in temperature. This exquisite thermal sensitivity, and their fast response times to sudden temperature changes, is exploited thereby demonstrating the usability of a WS2-on-paper thermal sensor in a respiration monitoring device., Comment: 6 main text figures, 1 table, 6 supp. info. figures

The technique of passive daytime radiative cooling (PDRC) is used to cool an object down by simultaneously reflecting sunlight and thermally radiating heat to the cold outer space through the Earth's atmospheric window. However, for practical applications, current PDRC materials are facing unprecedented challenges such as complicated and expensive fabrication approaches and performance degradation arising from surface contamination. Here, we develop a scalable paper-based material with excellent self-cleaning and self-cooling capabilities, through air-spraying ethanolic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) microparticles suspensions embedded within the micropores of the paper. The formed superhydrophobic PTFE coating not only protects the paper from water wetting and dust contamination for real-life applications but also reinforces its solar reflectance by sunlight backscattering. The paper fibers, when enhanced with PTFE particles, efficiently reflect sunlight and strongly radiate heat through the atmospheric window, resulting in a sub-ambient cooling performance of 5$^{\circ}$C and radiative cooling power of 104 W/m$^2$ under direct solar irradiance of 834 W/m$^2$ and 671 W/m$^2$, respectively. The self-cleaning surface of the cooling paper extends its lifespan and keep its good cooling performance for outdoor applications. Additionally, dyed papers are experimentally studied for broad engineering applications. They can absorb appropriate visible wavelengths to display specific colors and effectively reflect near-infrared lights to reduce solar heating, which synchronously achieves effective radiative cooling and aesthetic varieties in a cost-effective, scalable, and energy-efficient way.

Highly flexible electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material with excellent shielding performance is of great significance to practical applications in next-generation flexible devices. However, most EMI materials suffer from insufficient flexibility and complicated preparation methods. In this study, we propose a new scheme to fabricate a magnetic Ni particle/Ag matrix composite ultrathin film on a paper surface. For a ~2 micro meter thick film on paper, the EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) was found to be 46.2 dB at 8.1 GHz after bending 200,000 times over a radius of ~2 mm. The sheet resistance (Rsq) remained lower than 2.30 Ohm after bending 200,000 times. Contrary to the change in Rsq, the EMI SE of the film generally increased as the weight ratio of Ag to Ni increased, in accordance with the principle that EMI SE is positively related with an increase in electrical conductivity. Desirable EMI shielding ability, ultrahigh flexibility, and simple processing provide this material with excellent application prospects.

We fabricate paper-supported semiconducting devices by rubbing a layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) crystal onto a piece of paper, similarly to the action of drawing/writing with a pencil on paper. We show that the abrasion between the MoS2 crystal and the paper substrate efficiently exfoliates the crystals, breaking the weak van der Waals interlayer bonds and leading to the deposition of a film of interconnected MoS2 platelets. Employing this simple method, that can be easily extended to other 2D materials, we fabricate MoS2-on-paper broadband photodectectors with spectral sensitivity from the ultraviolet (UV) to the near-infrared (NIR). In the current work, a novel class of (Ca0.9Si0.1)Al2O6:Eu2+,Nd3+ long persistent phosphor was synthesized using high-temperature (1000-1500oC) solid-state reaction method. Further, the phosphor material was formulated into a phosphorescent ink using epoxy based colloidal suspension. Interestingly the phosphorescent ink absorbs ambient energies such as white light from D65 and tungsten lamps, sunlight, artificial lights etc., stores up the energy and emit as efficient blue colored photoluminescence (PL) apparently visible for many hours for dark adapted human eye. However, the optimum PL emission centred at ~450 nm has been registered at ~365 nm excitation that is attributed to transitions from 4f65d1 to 4f7 energy levels of Eu2+ ions. The longer persistence of PL aroused due to trapping and de-trapping of holes at Nd3+ sites situated proximate to valance band. In the optimised stoichiometric composition of the phosphor, the persistence lasted for >4 hours in extremely dark conditions. Furthermore, the phenomenon of long persistence enables to create/design unique hidden markings on goods and certificates using quick response (QR) code patterns. In conventional FORC (First Order Reversal Curve) analysis of a magnetic system, reversible and low-coercivity irreversible materials are treated as being qualitatively different: the FORC distribution shows low-coercivity materials but completely hides reversible (zero-coercivity) ones. This distinction is artificial -- as the coercivity approaches zero, the physical properties of an irreversible material change smoothly into those of a reversible material. We have developed a method (called FORC+, implemented in free software at http://MagVis.org) for displaying the reversible properties of a system (a reversible switching-field distribution, R-SFD) together with the irreversible ones (the usual FORC distribution), so that there is no sudden discontinuity in the display when the coercivity becomes zero. We will define a "FORC+ dataset" to include the usual FORC distribution, the R-SFD, the saturation magnetization, and what we will call the "lost hysteron distribution" (LHD) such that no information is lost -- the original FORC curves can be exactly recovered from the FORC+ dataset. We also give some examples of the application of FORC+ to real data -- it uses a novel complementary-color display that minimizes the need for smoothing. In systems which switch suddenly (thus having sharp structures in the FORC distribution) direct display of un-smoothed raw data allows visualization of sharp structures that would be washed out in a conventional smoothed FORC display. The use of natural or bioinspired materials to develop edible electronic devices is a potentially disruptive technology that can boost point-of-care testing. The technology exploits devices which can be safely ingested, along with pills or even food, and operated from within the gastrointestinal tract. Ingestible electronics could potentially target a significant number of biomedical applications, both as therapeutic and diagnostic tool, and this technology may also impact the food industry, by providing ingestible or food-compatible electronic tags that can smart track goods and monitor their quality along the distribution chain. We hereby propose temporary tattoo-paper as a simple and versatile platform for the integration of electronics onto food and pharmaceutical capsules. In particular, we demonstrate the fabrication of all-printed Organic Field-Effect Transistors (OFETs) on untreated commercial tattoo-paper, and their subsequent transfer and operation on edible substrates with a complex non-planar geometry.

The realization of optoelectronic devices on paper has been an outstanding challenge due to the large surface roughness and incompatible nature of paper with optical materials. Here, we demonstrate a new class of optoelectronic devices on a piece of printing paper using graphene as an electrically reconfigurable optical medium. Our approach relies on electro-modulation of optical properties of multilayer graphene on paper via blocking the interband electronic transitions. The paper based devices yield high optical contrast in the visible spectrum with fast response speed. Pattering graphene into multiple pixels, folding paper into 3-dimensional shapes or printing coloured ink on paper substrates enable us to demonstrate novel optoelectronic devices which cannot be realized with wafer-based techniques., Comment: Work has been published in ACS Photonics. The response of paper to humidity variations is a complex multi-scale problem. The hygroscopic swelling of individual fibres and their interactions within the fibrous network govern the macroscopic response. At this scale, moisture induced instabilities and out-of-plane deformations may occur. This work focuses on several aspects of this issue. A macroscopic phenomenological hygro-mechanical model is first proposed, which aims at predicting moisture induced out-of-plane deformations in paper sheets. The constitutive model is based on the relation between these deformations and typical irreversible phenomena associated to the history of paper manufacturing, i.e. the release of dried-in strains. The model is used to describe bending induced by moisture gradients through the thickness of the sheet as well as buckling due to moisture variation in the presence of mechanical constraints. The results of the model show that the anisotropic sheet-level hygro-expansion has a strong influence on the instability phenomena. Moreover, a comparison with experiments provides adequate semi-quantitative estimates. An additional step is made towards the multi-scale understanding of paper hygro-mechanics. The fundamental mechanisms governing the macroscopic moisture induced response are investigated on the basis of the underlying fibrous network. To this aim, a meso-structural model is developed which consists of a network of fibres randomly positioned in a planar region according to an orientation probability density function. A series of network simulations reveals that upon moisture content variations the expansion of the inter-fibre bonding regions drives the overall deformation. Particularly in the case of anisotropic fibre orientation, this explains the origin of the macro-scale anisotropic hygro-expansion, which is essential for the observed sheet-level instability phenomena.

This paper presents a multi-scale approach to predict the effective hygro-mechanical behaviour of paper sheets based on the properties of the underlying fibrous network. Despite the vast amount of literature on paper hygro-expansion, the functional dependence of the effective material properties on the micro-structural features remains yet unclear. In this work, a micro-structural model of the paper fibrous network is first developed by random deposition of the fibres within a planar region according to an orientation probability density function. Asymptotic homogenization is used to determine its effective properties numerically. Alternatively, two much more idealized micro-structural models are considered, one based on a periodic lattice structure with a regular network of perpendicular fibres and one based on the Voigt average. Despite their simplicity, they reproduce representative micro-structural features, such as the orientation anisotropy and network level hygro-elastic properties. These alternative models can be solved analytically, providing closed-form expressions that explicitly reveal the influence of the individual micro-scale parameters on the effective hygro-mechanical response. The trend predicted by the random network model is captured reasonably well by the two idealized models. The resulting hygro-mechanical properties are finally compared with experimental data reported in the literature, revealing an adequate quantitative agreement.

A commercially available membrane filter paper composed of mixed cellulose esters bearing typically an interconnected pore structure was transformed into a stimuli-responsive bilayer actuator by depositing a thin film of poly(ionic liquid)-modified graphene oxide sheets (GO-PIL) onto the filter paper. In acetone vapor, the as-synthesized bilayer actuator bent readily into multiple loops at a fast speed with the GO-PIL top film inwards. Upon pulling back into air the actuator recovered their original shape. The asymmetric swelling of the top GO-PIL film and the bottom porous filter paper towards organic vapor offers a favorably synergetic function to drive the actuation. The PIL polymer chains in the hybrid film were proven crucial to enhance the adhesion strength between the GO sheets and the adjacent filter paper to avoid interfacial delamination and thus improve force transfer. The overall construction allows a prolonged lifetime of the bilayer actuator under constant operation, especially when compared to that of the GO/filter paper bilayer actuator without PIL., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures

Driven by low-cost, resource abundance and distinct material properties, the use of paper in electronics, optics and fluidics is under investigation. Considering sensor systems based on magneto-resistance principles (anisotropic, giant, tunnel) that are conventionally manufactured onto inorganic semiconductor materials, we propose the use of paper substrates for cost reduction purposes primarily. In particular, we studied the magneto-resistance sensitivity of permalloy (Py:Ni81Fe19) onto paper substrates. In this work, we report on our findings with clean room paper (80 g/m2, Rrms = 2.877 {\mu}m, 23% surface porosity, latex impregnation, no embossed macro-structure). Here, the Py:Ni81Fe19 coating was manufactured by means of a dry process, sputter deposition, and spans an area of 10x10 mm2 and a thickness of 70 nm. Employing a four-point-probe DC resistivity measurement setup, we investigated the change of electrical resistance of Py:Ni81Fe19 under the presence of an oriented external magnetic field. In particular, we investigate the magneto-resistive change at two configurations: (1) the direction of the magnetic field is parallel to the nominal induced electric current and (2) the direction of the magnetic field is perpendicular to the electric current. Due to the stochastic orientation of the fibers interplaying with the Py:Ni81Fe19 coating, the change in magneto-resistance of the overall system at both measurement configurations closely corresponds to the classical response of Py:Ni81Fe19 at a +/-45{\deg} angle between the direction of electrical current and magnetic field. Using the magneto-optic kerr effect, we observed the formation of domain walls at the fiber bending locations. Future work will focus on the impact of layer thickness, fiber dimensions and structure of magnetic coating on the performance of the paper-based Py:Ni81Fe19 magneto-resistors., Comment: 9 pages, 14 figures

Graphene is prepared with a variety of methods, such as thermal decomposition of SiC, Chemical Vapor Deposition and pulsed laser deposition. This study is about the properties of the sets of objects associated in a structure resulting from multiple-processes involving chance as are materials whose texture is unordered and random. Being a paper scientist the author refers to the sheet of paper which is a stochastic fibrous set whose porous texture can be considered as an archetype for many natural or artificial human structures. The paper properties are correlated with its texture by taking account the effect of chance occurring during its manufacturing process. The theoretical developments, the formalism and the application methods presented in this study have a general significance beyond the only paper material.A specific property of sets of objects randomly unorderly distributed in space is their interfaces orientation distribution. This distribution is usually obtained by the analysis of images sampled in the object sets. The density of orientation probability of the fibers or of the texture interfaces, weighted by their length or by their area, can be interpreted as the radius of curvature of an outline or of a warped surface which characterizes, from a global and statistical point of view, the texture geometry in two or three dimensions. This figure named by the author the "equivalent pore", is with its elliptical shape similar to the one of the mean pore defined by the mean directional chord between the interfaces in the texture. Different methods of "equivalent pore" establishing are analyzed : by conformal map of the fiber network or of the texture interfaces, by images stereometric analysis of texture tomographical cuts, by scattering and diffraction of a laser light beam impacting the fibrous texture or the material surface replica, by hard X-ray absorption and phase contrast at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facilities(ESRF), in Grenoble. The "equivalent pore" concept allows us to study random unordered sets behavior in strength fields while simplifying this analysis. Thus a phenomenon occurring in a plane set, in two dimensions, can be analyzed on its "equivalent pore" linear outline, and a phenomenon which occurs in volume in a three dimensional set can be analyzed on its "equivalent pore" warped surface. This concept has been applied for physical, mechanical, optical and ionic conduction properties of materials like papers, boards, felts, nonwoven textiles, polymer foams, metallic alloys with grain joints, geological grounds, and for the surface mapping of natural relief and of materials with different gloss, worn or roughness levels.The ellipse and the ellipso\"id, as well as multi-modes compositions of it, are the most appropriate figures to represent the "equivalent pore" of materials with a random unordered texture. The fact that a law, which defines the curvature of an elliptic deterministic geometrical configuration, is essential to represent interface orientation allocation of elements whose spatial distribution is probabilistic is a noteworthy fact that makes us wonder. This assertion is corroborated by fluid flow analysis through porous media. The global dissipated energy for fluid flow is distributed along the motion (translation and rotation) and fluid deformation components on the "equivalent pore" whose surface is conformal to the texture interfaces tangential space. The porous media being homogenous and the fluid particles indistinguishable each ones from the others, due to permanent stochastic exchanges from one fluid volume element into another, we conclude that their motion quantification is invariant on each point of the "equivalent pore" surface. This quantification can be represented by a group of elliptical cylinders.The "equivalent pore" and cylinders group surface intersections define the fluid particle probabilistic paths in the porous media. One singular geometrical configuration of the elliptic cylinders group union with the ellipsoidal "equivalent pore" fulfills the minimal energy dissipation requirements in the stress field applied to the fluid. The resulting paths are ellipso\"ido-cylindrical curves carpeting the ellipso\"id by a beam of isoperim\'etric lacets, in close or open loops depending on the possible pairing off the curves in their nodals and isoclinal tangency points. The flow laminarity and unrotationality are globally established in the porous media at the macroscopic scale, for Reynold's number small values, in agreement with the results found moreover. The so defined ellipso\"ido-cylindrical curve is a stationary curve at the average least action meaning, for a punctual mobile or a deformable volume element moving on the surface of the ellipsoid from a nodal spot to the other in an antipodal position. This curve establishes a gauge which characterizes, from a global point of view, the physical space embraced by the fluid during its flow, in dynamical balance conditions compatible with the stress field. The ellipso\"ido-cylindrical curve allows to carpet the ellipso\"id as a function of one cyclic angular variable, which is a new construction for the ellipso\"id. When the set of the objects is isotropic the curve is sphero-cylindrical whose plan mapping permit to decipher the tai-chi figure of the Tao\"ist Buddhism philosophy.This study of random unordered object sets, and more specially of fibrous porous media, allows to establish a structural link between their small scale texture stochastic disorder and the harmonious order that emerges from these sets at a larger scale. The largest chance possible, compatible with the stress field which put a strain on these sets, is the necessary and sufficient variable which allows to best globally adjust their behaviors according to the probabilistic and deterministic laws governing their evolution.The vocabulary used in this study is issued from the common language, most of the time adapted to the material class, it is transposable in other fields of interest. A variety of paper were drawn by lead pencil with the grade between 4H through 10B. Raman spectroscopy verified both G and D peaks on all the drawing on PC print paper, PC photo paper, kent paper and paper for silver halide print. After irradiation of scanning femtosecond laser, silver halide paper drawn with 10B lead pencil remained surface flatness compared to the other papers. Raman spectroscopy on silver print paper showed a large G peak with less intensity of D peak. After irradiation of scanning femtosecond laser on silver halide paper drawn by 10B lead pencil, Raman spectroscopy showed large G peak and less intensity of D peak together with 2D peak around 2,700 /cm corresponding to the existence of multi graphene.

The ternary intermetallic RTX compounds (R = rare earth, T = transitional metal, X = p-block metal) have been investigated extensively in the past few decades due to their interesting physical properties. Recently, much attention has been paid to the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of these RTX compounds, especially the ones with heavy rare-earth, for their potential application in low temperature magnetic refrigeration. In this paper, we review the MCE of RTSi and RTAl systems with R = Gd~Tm, T = Fe~Cu and Pd, which are widely investigated in recent years. It is found that these RTX compounds exhibit various crystal structures and magnetic properties, which then result in different MCE. Large MCE has been observed not only in the typical ferromagnetic materials but also in the antiferromagnetic materials. The magnetic properties have been studied in detail to discuss the physical mechanism of large MCE in RTX compounds. Particularly, some RTX compounds, such as ErFeSi, HoCuSi, HoCuAl, etc, exhibit large reversible MCE under low magnetic field change, which suggests that these compounds could be promising materials for magnetic refrigeration in low temperature range., Comment: 100 pages, 46 figures, 3 tables, 110 references

We experimentally investigated the properties of graphite layers produced by an easy and non-conventional method of repeatedly rubbing conventional random stacked graphite bulk against insulating and semiconductor substrates. The patterned structure composed of rubbed-off and transferred layers exhibits properties of a solid-state material with through-thickness anisotropy of carrier mobility reaching ~10^3 cm^2/V*sec at the surface. The surface of the structure demonstrates quality of more ordered and optically oriented mono or few layer graphene shaped by self-organization process due to friction. Graphene-based papers attract particular interests recently owing to their outstanding properties, the key of which is their layer-by-layer hierarchical structures similar to the biomaterials such as bone, teeth and nacre, combining intralayer strong sp2 bonds and interlayer crosslinks for efficient load transfer. Here we firstly study the mechanical properties of various interlayer and intralayer crosslinks via first-principles calculations and then perform continuum model analysis for the overall mechanical properties of graphene-based papers. We find that there is a characteristic length scale l_{0}, defined as \Sqrt{Dh_{0}/4G}, where D is the stiffness of the graphene sheet, h_{0} and G are the height of interlayer crosslink and shear modulus respectively. When the size of the graphene sheets exceeds 3l_{0}, the tension-shear (TS) chain model that are widely used for nanocomposites fails to predict the overall mechanical properties of the graphene-based papers. Instead we proposed here a deformable tension-shear (DTS) model by considering the elastic deformation of the graphene sheets, also the interlayer and intralayer crosslinks. The DTS is then applied to predict the mechanics of graphene-based paper materials under tensile loading. According to the results we thus obtain, optimal design strategies are provided for designing graphene papers with ultrahigh stiffness, strength and toughness., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures

The normal paper used in any printer is among the cheapest flexible organic materials that exist. We demonstrate that we can print on paper high-frequency circuits tunable with an applied dc voltage. This is possible with the help of an ink containing functionalized carbon nanotubes and water. After the water is evaporated from the paper, the nanotubes remain steadily imprinted on paper, showing a semiconducting behaviour and tunable electrical properties.

In disordered, viscoelastic or viscoplastic materials a sample response exhibits a recovery phenomenon after the removal of a constant load or after creep. We study experimentally the recovery in paper, a quasi two-dimensional system with intrinsic structural disorder. The deformation is measured by using the digital image correlation (DIC) method. By the DIC we obtain accurate displacement data and the spatial fields of deformation and recovered strains. The averaged results are first compared to several heuristic models for in particular viscoelastic polymer materials. The most important experimental quantity is the permanent creep strain, and we analyze whether it is non-zero by fitting the empirical models of viscoelasticity. We then present in more detail the spatial recovery behavior results from DIC, and show that they indicate a power-law -type relaxation. We outline results on sample-to-sample variation and collective, spatial fluctuations in the recovery behaviour. An interpretation is provided of the relaxation in the general context of glassy, interacting systems with barriers.

We present statistical analysis of acoustic emission (AE) data from tensile experiments on paper sheets, loading mode I, with samples broken under strain control. The results are based on 100 experiments on unnotched samples and 70 samples with a long initial edge notch. First, AE energy release and AE event rates are considered for both cases, to test for the presence of "critical points" in fracture. For AE energy, no clear signatures are found, whereas the main finding is that the event rate diverges when a sample-dependent "critical time" of the maximum event rate is approached. This takes place after the maximum stress is reached. The results are compared with statistical fracture models of heterogenous materials. The dynamics of a "peeling front" or an elastic line is studied under creep (constant load) conditions. Our experiments show an exponential dependence of the creep velocity on the inverse force (mass) applied. In particular, the dynamical correlations of the avalanche activity are discussed here. We compare various avalanche statistics to those of a line depinning model with non-local elasticity, and study various measures of the experimental avalanche-avalanche and temporal correlations such as the autocorrelation function of the released energy and aftershock activity. From all these we conclude, that internal avalanche dynamics seems to follow "line depinning" -like behavior, in rough agreement with the depinning model. Meanwhile, the correlations reveal subtle complications not implied by depinning theory. We measure the geometry of a crumpled sheet of paper with laser-aided topography and discuss its statistical properties. The curvature of an elasto-plastic fold scales linearly with applied force. The curvature distribution follows an exponential form with regions of high curvature localized along ridges. The measured ridge length distribution is consistent with a hierarchical model for ridge breaking during crumpling. A large fraction of the ridges are observed to terminate without bifurcating and the ridge network connectedness is not as complete as anticipated.
