Numerous researchers have documented the multiple ways in which women are disadvantaged in the workplace. Scant research, however, has investigated gender stratification in jobs in the sex industry. Drawing on qualitative data collected in the mainstream pornography industry, this paper describes gender differences in the careers of X-rated actresses and actors. Several patterns noted in other occupations are present in porn work, including more opportunities for advancement for men, greater career longevity for actors, and differential treatment of workers influenced by gender expectations. However, unlike other occupations, actresses earn higher wages than their male coworkers, and have more opportunities to increase their overall earnings within the sex industry. This paper explores the enactment of economic knowledge in the context of policy making. It examines how economic information is differently embodied in the analysis of data, the posing of alternative policies, the negotiation of group decision making and in the signaling of its results to stakeholders. It shows how economic knowledge, though ritualized in its various contexts, is also performed differently by staff economists, policymakers, and by leaders. Verbatim transcripts of meetings of the Federal Open Market Committee, the central policy making unit of the Federal Reserve, are used to explore how situation shapes the uses and meaning of economic knowledge among elite policy makers. Much opposition to globalization rests on the assumption that globalization will lead to a ?race to the bottom? concerning human rights. With the establishment of the World Trade Organization a heated debate developed about the relative merits of international organizations such as the International Labour Organization regarding the promotion of social human rights. Should the World Trade Organization use coercive measures like a social dumping clause to ascertain that social human rights are upheld? Or does the strategy of the International Labor Organization suffice? This paper examines the impact the International Labour Organization has had concerning pressuring countries to ratify one of its core social human rights conventions (the Minimum Age Convention C138 prohibiting child labor). Child labor is the only social human right that would cause production costs to rise significantly and thereby put developing countries with labor intense economies that implement this standard single-handedly at a comparative disadvantage. Using an event history analysis (1960-1995), I find that the ratification of the Minimum Age Convention of the International Labor Organization is significantly more likely if the country has many international organizational links to the world society. Durkheim offers a multi-dimensional account of social regulation, and one that can only be fully understood when we come to terms with the binary nature of Durkheim's anomic-fatalistic distinction. Unlike Marx's alienation-which I will argue here is quite unexpectedly consistent with the concept of fatalism-Durkheim offers opposing social conditions that are rooted in social structure and that each encompass quite distinct human possibilities. From this foundation, I hope to argue against Lukes' contention that Durkheim's anomie is in tension with Marx's alienation. Lukes' error, in my view, is in disregarding Durkheim's concealed "fatalism" concept. Consequently, Lukes does not allow for a Durkheimian critique of over regulation; a theoretical position that can only be extracted from Durkheim if we turn away from anomie and towards his idea of fatalism. This research explores connections between the growth in diversity curricula in higher education "general studies courses" and the shaping of career trajectories for faculty, contrasting the experiences of faculty and instructors who teach in these arenas. Our research questions focus on the distinctive shape of the teaching experience for faculty and instructors with the goal of identifying how these mark the career paths for higher education teachers of color in contrast to past conceptualizations of an academic career. Using qualitative interview techniques and constant comparison coding strategies, we identify a set of themes which allow us to describe these distinctive career paths and the potential effects on recruiting and retaining instructors and faculty of color. We ask the question of who benefits from this burgeoning niche within the academy and in what ways this may influence how we prepare future faculty for their roles in the academy. Our selection frame included a complete listing of all faculty and instructors (adjunct and graduate) with individual responsibility for a course that meets University "Area H" (Diversity) curriculum requirements during the years 1999-2002. This yielded a listing of 68 diversity teachers and we completed interviews with a total of 47 diversity teachers, including faculty members across the full range of professorial ranks and adjunct and graduate instructors. Qualitative coding yielded a focus for this paper on the political burden of teaching in this arena, as it contradicts prior literature on traditional patterns for building academic careers. Based on 64 interviews with men in same-sex relationships, the paper documents the range of their sexual and emotional relationships and the development of arrangements governing sexual exclusivity, primary and secondary relationships, and the communication of trust and commmitment. Typical measures of democracy rely either on dichotomous classification or on a continuous index to express the "level of democracy" within a nation being studied. This paper suggests that the current approach(es) leave something to be desired and suggest alternatively the use of a comparative approach to measuring democracy. Using Qualitative Comparative Analysis, a new measure is constructed and compared to the current methods. The discussion explains how the new measure allows for corrections in misconceptualized models as well as for more accurate exploration of the effects of democracy on various outcomes and vice versa. Most analyses of the globalization of culture depend on the dynamics of capitalism for much of their explanation, but what does cultural globalization look like in a society without capitalism? In this paper I will describe how global cultural forms such as European-style theatre, folklore competitions, and Olympics-style mass spectacle are used by culture producers in a non-Western, non-capitalist country to communicate both their culture's universalism and its particularism. I will argue that a culture production perspective that analytically separates form from content supports Weberian interpretations of globalization as a phenomenon that involves social actors increasingly taking each other into account in a global context. Abstract Disability in the United States continues to be disadvantaged and stigmatized status. This social construction of disability persists in spite of various efforts, including legislative, to improve the social status of the disabled. This paper draws on historical sources and on several social theorists, principally Michael Foucault, to offer an explanation of the production and perpetuation of disability as a social identity in the United States. It is argued that the devalued status of disabled persons serves to support existing social institutions and to provide normative boundaries for "acceptable? social identities and behavior. The different roles and responsibilities associated with these departments is examined, as well as the way workers in each legimitate their position in regard to those paid better and worse then they. This study focuses on the social networks of Mexican migrants and how such networks impact their informal labor market participation. I test three hypotheses about how social networks impact informal labor markets. To test these hypotheses, I utilize the Mexican Migration Project (MMP71) data. I find substantial support for the three hypotheses tested. The results show that social networks are an important determinant of informal labor markets, as personal networks lead undocumented Mexican migrants into the formal labor market. I also find that strong ties (familial and friendship ties) are linked with formal labor market participation for undocumented migrants, but weak ties (paisano ties) are not. Finally, undocumented Mexican migrants receive higher rewards for use of their social capital than documented migrants. Unlike previous informal labor market studies which focused on factors external to the worker, I show that undocumented migrants influence their labor markets and highlight how actors whose legal status greatly hinders their economic adaptation are able to manipulate their economic conditions. There is a paucity of studies examining the relationship between Puerto Ricans? social networks and their earnings. I utilize data from the Latin American Migration Project (collected in 1998 and 1999) to test four hypotheses derived from social capital theory to predict the hourly earnings of Puerto Rican migrants. My study illustrates that Puerto Rican migrants? social capital is positively related with earnings. Although the mechanisms by which social capital impacts earnings differs for men and women, the effect is positive regardless of gender. Additionally, Puerto Rican migrants do not benefit from ethnic solidarity in terms of increased wages, but network diversity appears to provide labor market information leading to increased earnings. In the wake of new technological innovations that allowed electronic banking and computer account access, the federal Treasury announced that all government transactions will be electronically conducted. All those receiving government benefits of any kind ? Social Security, Veteran?s Administration, student loans, Medicaid, Medicaid, Food Stamps, even a tax refund check - are targeted for electronic benefit delivery. Privatization of disbursement was to result in enormous savings for the government and generate revenue in the private sector. Instead, recipients are receiving poor service and being forced to pay to access their benefits while CitiCorp has emerged as a virtual monopoly capital and is handling billions of dollars in benefits a month in addition to their profits from disbursement. Historical analysis of legislative documents illustrates the basis for the development of the Electronic Benefit Transfer policy was to create a legitimated control mechanism to force participation in the advancement of capitalism on those receiving government benefits by developing and treating them as a deviant class. There is a void in the sociological literature on EBT in general and addressing the impact of the structural relationship between the recipient class and capitalist class in particular which this work addresses. This paper is an attempt to explain puzzling patterns of Internet usage in Japan in the 1990s. Throughout the decade, the growth of access from home computer has been unexpectedly slow whereas access to the Internet from cell phones became popular with service providers garnering over 50 million subscribers from within the national population of 130 million within a timeframe of a few years. This paper first examines the distribution of different access methods across the population. Data from a community survey indicates that the use of personal computers is mainly explained by conventional demographic variables including gender, age, educational attainment, and marital status while the use of web-accessible cell phones is not predicted by these variables. This finding leads us to explore the underlying factors in the popularity of wireless internet access. After reviewing possible explanations, this paper concludes that the success of web-accessible cell phone is a multi-causal story. Evidence suggests that a number of factors including the marketing strategy of cell phone service providers, technical functionality, the process of network externality, and the level of technological literacy all contribute to the diffusion of Internet access via cell phones. These findings support the notion of interpretative flexibility of technological artifacts. That is, the Internet/cell phone/personal computer is not deduced from technology itself because it is an outcome of social negotiation involving both producers and users of a technology. This project contributes to the literature on mobility in the United States by exploring downward intergenerational and intragenerational mobility through a series of in-depth interviews. One hundred respondents from the NY-NJ-CT Comprehensive Metropolitan Statistical Area were interviewed. The primary sampling unit is secondary school defined by racial and socioeconomic characteristics; respondents are members of their high school?s Class of 1976. Questions asked during the interview were designed to gauge how individuals who differ by race and class view their experiences with downward mobility, as well as to gauge the extent and nature of the social-psychological effects of downward mobility. The goal of this project to examine respondents? accounts of downward mobility in order to better understand how American cultural messages about class are experienced by individuals of different backgrounds. In the last three decades, we have witnessed dramatic demographic changes in the number of African American children raised by a single parent. During this period, the majority of scholarly work has focused on African American males raised in mother-only households. Missing from this important discussion is the influence of other types of African American single parent households on African American females. Using a nationally representative sample of eighth grade students from the National Educational Longitudinal Study (NELS), this research examines the relative effects of being in a single parent mother-only versus father-only household on the educational achievement of African American middle-grade females (N=63,090). Findings are that: (1) females in mother-only households perform less well than their counterparts in father-only households; (2) socioeconomic status is over three times more important than household type in predicting educational outcomes; (3) females in mother-only households get a greater return for increases in socioeconomic status than their counterparts in father-only households; and (4) race, gender, and class are simultaneously intersecting categories/relations in the family experiences and educational achievement processes of African American females. Using data gathered from five media news sources - activist sites on the World Wide Web (WWW), Lexis Nexis Academic Universe, The Seattle Times, Global Newsbank, and The New York Times, we analyze the coverage of local, national, and international protests that accompanied the World Trade Organization's (WTO) Third Ministerial Conference in Seattle, Washington in late 1999. Employing the Media Sensitivity-Protest Intensity Model of event reporting (Snyder and Kelly 1977; Mueller 1997a), the activist-based internet data are compared to the other four media sources. Activist-based web sites reported a higher proportion of transnational protest events at the local, national, and international level than the other four conventional media sources. Activist-based websites were also found to be less positively influenced by the intensity properties of protest events. Because of their lower threshold criteria for reporting protest events, we conclude that activist-based web sources should be used to complement more conventional media sources in research on transnational movements in the age of globalization. Technological advances that make round-the-clock production necessary and profitable, such as in oil refining, as well as increased development of the service industry, such as transportation, communications and utilities have all contributed to the widespread prevalence of Americans working non-day shifts, namely evening, night and rotating schedules. Such schedules have been demonstrated to have health consequences, particularly sleep disturbances, gastrointestinal problems, and greater risks for cardiovascular disease. Using a nationally representative sample from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, this analysis examines the health status and health care utilization of American workers who work non-day shifts. Contrary to the literature, findings from this data show little difference among the workers in various shifts in the levels of subjective health status. However, there is some evidence that a larger proportion of night workers take more sick days than workers in other shifts. Use of ambulatory health care services also do not seem to be associated with the timing of work when other sociodemographic variables are controlled. Use of a nationally representative sample of shift workers rather than select organizational samples and controlling for many sociodemographic characteristics known to be associated with health and health care use appears to show the relationship of shiftwork and health in a different light. This paper addresses the general issue of the relevance of life course perspectives to current theorizing about the impact of religion and religious institutions on individual lives by focusing attention on the linkage between religious mobility and the life-span development of attitudes and beliefs. We argue that theoretically both early religious socialization experiences and contemporary religious attachments should be associated with the nature of individual beliefs and attitudes. Employing data on several measures of attitudes and beliefs from the General Social Survey, we predict variation in individual differences in these measures from information on religious denominational origins and from change in religious affiliations. One of the most important patterns we isolate is one of important differences between "leavers" and "stayers" in salient dimensions of relevant attitudes and beliefs, along with a high degree of coherence between "stayers" and "converts." Persons who switch religious affiliations tend to show accentuated differences between their origins and destinations. Our results provide support for the existence of mechanisms that produce change in attitudes and beliefs via the dynamics of religious resocialization and change. This research points to a need to more thoroughly develop a model that employs both religious origins and religious destinations in the prediction of contemporary differences in attitudes and beliefs. We consider that the speech constitutes a privileged field for the analysis of the identities for in this field an actor defines itself and his enemies, he speaks about his problems, the goals outlined to solve those problems and he addresses an audience. As a methodology, we use frame analysis. Framing means to include certain aspects of the reality perceived in a text with the purpose of arriving at a definition of the protagonist, of the antagonist, a definition of the problem, a causal interpretation, a moral evaluation, and to recommend alternatives for the solution of the problem. Since the late 1960?s there has been a visible increase in the politicization of Islam all around the world. In most cases, this political movement manifested itself in the form of a radical Islam, or Islamic fundamentalism, with a great tendency to challenge existing non-religiously based regimes in developing countries. While in some of the cases this political Islam took the form of an alternative political party within the political system of the country in question, in some others, it grew violent and lead to revolutions and/or civil wars. This paper is an attempt to determine the conditions under which political Islam might turn anti-regime and/or into strong opposition movements. Three cases are examined for this purpose: Algeria with its ongoing civil war since 1992 and Iran with the 1979 revolution as the violent outcome cases and Turkey as the non-violent outcome case. The main argument here is that revolutionary challenges to the existing governments are caused by the fact that the Islamic groups within the political and economic system have blocked opportunities. Where the Islamic groups are economically and politically incorporated to the system - where the players in the market are not discriminated against on the basis of their religious preferences and where there is an inclusive political system in which political representation is not restricted to religious groups, strong opposition movements are least likely to occur. This paper explores selectively the thought of Pierre Bourdieu with attention to images of capital acquisition and conversion in order to conceptualize the career and scholarly work conditions of American academics employed as professors in major research universities. Much has been written about the terrains of higher education, viewed sociologically, psychologically, anthropologically, and politically. Yet, few scholarly contributions have examined the contexts of professors' work relative to their support for or constraint upon knowledge production as a desirable social aim. Although concerns have been raised about the applicability of Bourdieu's work to settings beyond the specific context of French higher education, it is possible to use his writings as opportunities to explore academic contextual issues (with attention to contextual constraint) in generic ways and relative to their resonance with American higher education. The paper capitalizes on these opportunities to frame the content of professors' scholarly careers and the "social sites" that shape their knowledge production efforts. The paper employs Bourdieu's ideas to address this aim, due to his concern with the social and cultural contexts -- and power dynamics -- that frame lives, individually and collectively, in institutions and in society more broadly. The paper closes with a set of ideas drawn from the works of social, sociocultural, and cognitive psychologists to consider possibilities for supporting scholarly learning, even within contexts of constraint as outlined by Bourdieu. Marx’s 1850s writings on non-Western societies, especially those on India, are far better known than his post-1872 ones. The later writings, some of them still unpublished, lend support to the notion that Marx moved away from the unilinear and somewhat Eurocentric perspectives that are often cited in critiques of his work. Unfortunately, some of these late writings are still unpublished, although there are plans to issue them as part of the new Marx-Engels Gesamtausgabe (MEGA2). This paper surveys Marx’s extensive 1879-82 writings on non-Western and pre-capitalist societies and gender, concentrating on his notebooks on Indonesia and ancient Rome, which will be published for the first time in MEGA2. The purpose of the proposed paper is to improve our understanding of the relationship between drug use and violence among youth in the early 21st century. Our paper takes an unique conceptual approach by integrating ideas from Agnew's general strain theory (GST) with Goldstein's tripartite model to advance scholarship on the relationship between drugs and violence. Specifically, we ask what types of strain-induced emotional states motivate particular drugs/violence linkages? Our hypotheses contend that the ability of GST to explain the tripartite model varies by the type of drugs/violence linkage. Maximum likelihood analyses of a pooled-sample of three different groups of youth (i.e., students- N= 1,600, juvenile detentioners-N= 400, and school dropouts-N= 400) in two different countries (the United States and Canada) will enable us to not only examine all hypotheses regarding this novel theoretical relationship, but also to conduct one of the most comprehensive studies of youth violence to date. Findings are currently in progress and will be reported at the annual meetings. The completed investigation promises to increase the utility of GST, better articulate the tripartite model (Goldstein 1985), and advance policy initiatives designed to ameliorate strain, drugs and violence among high-risk youth. Social movement scholars have long observed that the distribution of collective action has important spatial characteristics. However, there are few systematic analyses of the underlying structural patterns that shape the distribution of social movement organization for a large population of groups. In this paper we examine the spatial distribution of environmental organizations to determine the community level characteristics that predict the size of the environmental sector. Specifically, we assess the role of political, economic, social, and environmental factors that shape the patterning of environmental mobilization. This analysis allows us to assess the viability of arguments that focus on political institutions and opportunities, resource capacities, and grievances as alternative explanations for the development of social movement organizations. Our data on environmental organizations derives from a broader study in which we have located all active environmental organizations in North Carolina in 2002 (N=738). Our measures of social, economic, political, and environmental characteristics at the county-level come from federal datasets including the 2000 Census of Population and Housing and the Environmental Protection Agency?s LandView 5 dataset. We also measure the broader population of non-profit organizations using data from the Urban Institute?s National Center for Charitable Statistics. We present regression models that assess the relative importance of selected measures of county characteristics on the size of the environmental sector and the distribution of organizations across major issues (e.g., environmental justice, urban sprawl, wildlife conservation) in a county. This paper explores the complex nation-ist orientation of Indian programmers who are temporary or permanent immigrants to the United States. While they live out their fantasy brought from home of American life, they also feel culturally alienated, uprooted and critical while residing in the United States. Combined with the economics of body shopping?a practice of bringing programmers from India to work onsite in the United States through temporary work visas, the lives of these programmers carry paradoxes and ironies of transnational living within a nationalist framework. Lacking a transnational or post-nationalist mode of apprehending reality, these programmers display a continuous nostalgia for the ?other? nation; that is, they miss India while in the United States and long for American life when they go back to India. I understand this immigrant condition as constituted by a ?nation-ist? cognitive frame, which I term as ?total closure,? that is, constitution of the world as a collection of neatly divisible, bounded, totally closed substances. In its institutionalized form, ?total closure? expresses itself in terms of immigration restrictions, constituting these programmers as ?aliens?, whereas in its non-institutionalized form, it speaks through the nationalist self-identification of these transnational programmers, who, despite unsteady identities, recognize themselves as Indians alone. Focus groups have a proven track record in marketing research, however, their use in social program evaluation is relatively new. While the data provided by focus groups thus far has been used effectively in formative, or process, reporting, only limited direct attention has been placed on program participants (beneficiaries) as stakeholders. The present example of focus group implementation includes participant stakeholders as the direct beneficiaries of the program. Our data was collected in focus groups with parents of military dependent "at risk" youth who participated in the Youth Action Program, a prevention program funded by the United States Air Force. Besides providing an example of focus group use with participant stakeholders, the authors show how narrative analysis, following the traditions of ethomethodology and phenomenology, can use interactive data from focus groups to enhance our understanding of why certain program results occur. In this case, the focus groups demonstrated that the logic model, or basic structure, of the program was working. The narrative analysis provided insight into the reasons why. As an ecologically-oriented, utilization-centered approach to evaluation research, these parent focus groups enhanced the formative report by offering positive direction for further program development and change. Though the term is widely used by social scientists, theory and research on social capital has an ad-hoc quality, i.e., social relationships "matter" but it is unclear which aspects of relationships matter for what types of outcomes. I use research on social networks and social control norms to examine how, when and why members of micro-credit borrowing groups use social control to create social capital. Using unique ethnographic, survey and loan data from approximately 100 borrowing groups operating in the U.S., I examine the conditions under which group members use social relationships in micro-credit borrowing groups. I find that peers do engage in actively screening fellow members before approving them as borrowers, though not always effectively. Moreover, different aspects of social relationships lead to social control, which provides members with adequate social capital to increase their financial capital through micro-credit. The impact of labor demand on the decline in labor force participation of older males too young to qualify for Social Security is often acknowledged but seldom measured or incorporated into models of retirement. Using data from Current Population Survey March Demographic files and the periodic employment dislocation supplements, a series of cause-eliminated increment-decrement work life tables capture the impact of employment dislocation and early (before age 65) pension receipt on the employment of older males in a simple overall summary measure: expected work life. Employment dislocation and being offered an early pension are two of the most obvious manifestations of shifts in labor demand that can affect the labor force withdrawal of older males. Consistent with earlier research, I find early pension receipt to be an important factor in early labor force withdrawal but, in addition, employment dislocation has a sizeable direct impact on labor force participation. The findings suggest that employment dislocation and other, yet unmeasured, labor demand factors need to be incorporated into models of retirement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It’s a commonplace that life in apartment blocks is not suited for families with children. Space is too cramped. The transportation of babies and groceries is too inconvenient. The supervision of playing children is too difficult. Yet in many cities of the world, particularly in parts of Asia, families have little choice. In Singapore approximately xx percent of the population lives in public housing ? much of which is in "slab blocks" of about 12 storeys and in "point blocks" of 20, 25, and 30 storeys. In addition, approximately yy percent of the population live in condominiums, most of which are also apartment blocks. The modal family person in Singapore is an apartment dweller. How does life in an apartment block affect daily life? Do family members spend more time together ? or less? Does a family receive frequent visits from others? How are casual trips out of the house affected? We analyze the 24-hour time diaries of the pilot responses in the first study of household time use in Singapore. The xx respondents are spread across yy households (all household members aged 12 and over were asked to respond). The sample was comprised of high-rise residents split between high and low floors (up to the 30th floor) and split between a location very convenient to a town center and one that requires a feeder bus to arrive at a town center. The diaries record primary and secondary activities, the people involved in each activity, and the place of each activity. The time diaries are linked to household questionnaire data on perceptions of high-rise living. The results allow us to compare the living patterns of families in high-rise flats with those in single-family houses in other countries and to compare those on high floors with those on low floors and those near a town center and those more distant. Exogamy has long been used as a measure for determining the level of acceptability between ethnic and racial groups. This study will focus on exogamy between Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico and the largest national groups on the Island, specifically, Americans, Europeans, Cubans, Dominicans, Other Latin Americans, and Others. The data for Puerto Rico the analysis comes from the 1990 5 percent Public Use Micro Data Sample. A multinominal logistic regression was conducted to determine the odds a Puerto Rican will have to form or will form an exogamous relationship with either a European American, an African American, other racial non-Hispanic groups, Mexicans, Cubans, Dominicans, other Hispanics, and those with a generic Hispanic or Latino identity. Intermarriage that occurs in the island of Puerto Rico, the likelihood of exogamy is closely linked to the person's birthplace and to the parent's birthplace. Puerto Ricans are therefore much more likely to marry or cohabitate with another Puerto Rican born on the island versus all other possible group combination. In some cases particularly with Cubans, and Dominicans being a Puerto Rican born outside of Puerto Rico increases the likelihood of exogamy considerably. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In examining the world-historical context of the rise of pan-Islamic nationalism in Iran, this paper posits Islamic fundamentalism as a modern and global (rather than premodern and local) movement. Drawing on Polanyi and linking economy, polity, and culture, this study traces the origins of pan-Islamic nationalism in Iran to the transformation of the world-market relations in the second half of the nineteenth century and the rise of the food/agrarian regime after 1870. It shows that the relations of the state and the mercantile classes with the world market led to conflicting developments, viz., the national "contraction" of the state on the one hand and the international "expansion" of commercial classes on the other hand. The latter, in the course of their struggles for state representation, merged with the rising pan-Islamic reaction against European expansion in the "Islamic world." Pan-Islamism, by its capacity for articulating the economic nationalism of the mercantile classes in ethical terms, mobilized the masses of people for the struggle for the nationalization of the state. Hence, as a historical form, modernity and nationalism in the late nineteenth century Iran took a nonsecular character. Later, the Cold War politics revivified the pan-Islamic component of Iranian nationalism, creating the context for the rise to power of fundamentalism in the 1980s. The proposed research is an expansive exploration of retirement and the factors (namely, race and class) associated with that concept in the United States. The present study uses 1992-1998 publicly released data collected by the Health and Retirement Study to answer several queries. A series of logistic regressions explores several questions. First, this research addresses the question, "Does using the different definitions of retirement as the dependent variable affect our understanding of the relative strength and statistically significant predictive power of independent variables' association with the dependent variable, retirement? Second, five measures of social class are employed individually, in a series of logistic regressions, to answer the following query, "How does the association between class and retirement change with the use of different measures of class?" Finally, using logistic regressions in two parts enables the exploration of the association between race and retirement. First, interaction effects between the moderator variable social class and the focal variable, race are employed in the series of regressions. Second, models of retirement explored for query four are examined within and across individual racial/ethnic groups (i.e. Whites, Blacks and Hispanics in the United States) to compare the consistency of the findings within and across the three racial/ethnic groups. At what point in circular migration cycles do immigrants "feel" like they are home, and that they belong? This paper locates the role of emotions in examining adaptation to one's status of transnational migrant, and explores how the study of emotions can be a tool to illuminate how adaptation impacts integration, identity construction and international mobility. This paper focuses on interfirm mobility in an attempt to untangle the roles social institutions play in structuring individual job mobility. As opportunity structures change, individual mobility events occur as workers manage their careers in the face of these disruptions. Examining mobility patterns reveals how structural factors associated with labor markets either hinder or facilitate the socioeconomic achievement of individuals. This study investigates one determinant of the socioeconomic attainment process, job mobility. To examine the linkage between structural facets of the labor market and individual job mobility, I utilize the 1979 - 1996 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth Data and the Business Information Tracking Service of the Small Business Administration for the years of 1989 to 1994. I use Event History Analysis techniques in STATA to examine how two types of organizational growth impact individual job mobility given the individual’s labor market context. The findings suggest that the interaction between organizational growth, industry structure and organizational size plays a key role in structuring differential mobility outcomes. A major psychological task in old age and particularly at the end of life is the acceptance of the finitude of life. This study tests the effects of wisdom, religiosity, and purpose in life on attitudes toward death, using a sample of 164 older hospice patients, nursing home residents, and community dwelling adults (58+) from North Central Florida. Wisdom was defined as a combination of cognitive, reflective, and affective personality qualities. Controlling for socioeconomic status, gender, race, and the other variables in the model, multivariate regression analyses show that wisdom has a negative effect on death anxiety and escape acceptance of death, and intrinsic religiosity has a positive effect on approach and escape acceptance of death. By contrast, extrinsic religiosity is positively related to fear of death, death avoidance, and neutral and escape acceptance of death. Purpose in life is negatively related to fear of death and death avoidance. Those findings demonstrate that it is important to distinguish between intrinsic and extrinsic religiosity when studying the effect of religiosity on attitudes toward death and that wisdom and a sense of purpose and meaning in life might reduce older people's fear and avoidance of death. This paper examines the interaction between brides, their family members and friends, and saleswomen in the ritual acquisition of the white wedding dress in order to better understand the relationship between consumption, cultural capital, and gendered social interaction in contemporary wedding practices. The white wedding dress not only signifies the bride?s transition in social group membership from single women to married wives, but is a key marker of social status displayed to guests at the wedding, including family, friends, and co-workers. First, I provide a brief history of the white wedding dress and summarize the current literature on white weddings. Then I present data collected from in-depth, semi-structured interviews with women on their interpretations of white wedding ideology and experiences purchasing white wedding dresses. I conclude by discussing the finding this research adds to the current literature, which is that saleswomen and their sales tactics (including by appointment only policies, creating spectacles of beauty, and emotional manipulation) are influential in structuring the gendered cultural capital of the white wedding. This study takes a first step to investigate social life within agencies designed to house homeless adolescents through research conducted at a live-in, emergency youth shelter (The Faulk House). I pose the following questions here: How does the shelter approach the problem of adolescent homelessness? Is this approach challenged, that is, how are things like rules, voice, power, and social control negotiated in shelter life? As one institutionalized response to the social problem of adolescent homelessness the Faulk House addresses its client population through a plan for treatment that emphasizes ,,providing structure" for shelter residents. The shelter provides physical necessities, safety, life skills, and a consistent (for residents and staff), structured environment mainly in its operation as a quasi-total institution. Shelter curriculum treats adolescent homelessness as an individual rather than social problem, emphasizing the modification of individual behaviors through social control mechanisms such as physical and psychological boundaries. This approach conflicts with the experience of shelter residents, many of who experience poverty and homelessness as marginally connected to personal choice and behavior. Social life within the shelter is largely defined by the constant negotiation of social control mechanisms and the imposition of ,,structure." This paper explains how the lesbian/gay movement in San Francisco arrived at a new institutional settlement in the early 1970s. In 1968 gay liberation displayed a contradictory mix of civil rights, identity, and revolutionary political ideologies. By 1972 the movement had stabilized around building gay identity and pursuing civil rights. The crystallization of the field around gay pride and gay rights was not inevitable, but a result of the specific way events unfolded in this historical moment. While the New Left enabled the emergence of gay liberation by making thinkable new ways of organizing around sexuality, this same sense of possibility made it difficult for activists to assess competing alternatives and thus generated internal conflict. The rapid decline of the New Left in the early 1970s clarified the political environment. It reduced internal conflict and allowed political consensus to form around approaches compatible with emerging political opportunities. Thus, the way that events unfolded produced the right set of conditions for the forging of this new field - the right actors in the right place and time with the right cultural models. The role of historically specific events in the forging of this field suggests that "conditions peculiar to the circumstance" play a role in field crystallization generally (Sewell 1996, p. 862). School choice has become a means by which many people seek to reform American schools in recent years. Controversy has emerged from an uncertainty about who benefits from choice plans, particularly over whether or not school choice is discriminatory against poor and minority students. This study uses data from the National Household Education Survey of 1996 in logistic regression analyses to examine family background factors that affect the chances of families making active choices about the type of school that their child will attend. It is concluded that several factors, including race, parental education level, and household income, influence the chances that a family will actively involve themselves in the process of choosing the school that children in that household will attend, and these factors also influence the type of school that families will choose for their children. Despite the advantages of small group ethnographic research projects, time is often a limitation. Instructors find that monitoring several ethnographic data collections can be unwieldy. Students quickly realize that scheduling organizational meetings and data collection presents a significant obstacle to a successful collaborative effort. After implementing small group discussion forums for two semesters, the author found that they provide an excellent tool that can relieve some of these challenges. They make organizational meetings more efficient and give students a place to store research materials, hence softening the difficulty of mixing non-traditional students with traditional students. The small group discussion forums also provide an opportunity for students to do their own problem solving during the data collection process. This paper describes the advantages of using small discussion forums and then provides detailed instructions for how to implement this tool using regular web access. This paper focuses on the interplay between secular and Islamic trajectories of development in Turkey. It problematizes the dichotomous conception of universality attached to Western cultural arrangements, on the one hand, and the particularism and traditionalism attached to local cultural projects on the other. Islamists in Turkey combine Muslim values with strategies of capital accumulation. This may be seen as an attempt to reposition Islamist capitalists within the global economy as a competitive class. Or it may also be interpreted as a case of an anti-Western resistance movement against the Western dominance in the global market economy. Either way, this paper argues that globalization is not just the cross-border flows of trade and investment, but also involves substantial political/cultural transformations within states as well as within the military-strategic alliances of the state system. Sociologists have always paid greater attention to Mead's notion of the "self" than to his notion of "society." To correct this imbalance, his analysis of society is critically examined. Mead is characterized as providing the quintessential "institutional" view of society because, according to him, language, the family, economics, religion, and the polity are the basic institutions around which a society evolves. In critically examining his analysis of society, the spotlight is placed on his answers to three questions: (1) how did our fundamental institutions originally arise? (2) how do they operate in everyday life, and (3) how do they change after their inception? Mead's answers to these three questions are not only found to be wanting, but better answers to them than he supplies are provided. The overriding problem found with Mead's analysis lies not with the five fundamental institutions identified by him as comprising society, but instead with the master principle identified by him as governing their operation. Race has become and increasingly salient topic in sociology, especially the study of interracial interactions. Sociologists have focused their attention on identify formation, as well as on the consequences of antagonistic interracial interactions. While interracial interaction is shaped by racial expectations, little attention has been devoted to the social-psychological roots shaping these expectations. This research addresses the question: do blacks and whites vary in the meanings they attach to race? Affect Control Theory operates as if all members of society share similar affective meanings about identities. In contrast, Social Identity Theory predicts that people think more highly of their in-group than their out-group. According to this theory, individuals derive their identities from their in-group. Using survey techniques, this research tests competing hypotheses derived from these theories. We find that black respondents rate blacks more favorably than white counterparts. In contrast, no significant pattern emerged for white respondents. These results support Social Identity Theory predictions about interracial perceptions and suggest that further research in Affect Control Theory could benefit from increased attention to sub-cultural differences in racial meaning. There are several common mistakes in scholars’ attempts to understand the Black Power Movement. Some scholars attempt to understand Black Power as a phase of the Civil Rights Movement without recognizing that Black Power activists rejected much of the means and goals of Civil Rights. Often, the only major Black Power organization examined in surveys is the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense; but there is more to Black Power than the Panthers. Some scholars try to understand Black Power by focusing on the popular culture of Black Power. But many Black Power activists viewed the popular culture disparagingly. In their view, the popular culture distorted their movement. To gain a better understanding of the politics of Black Power, I examine the Black Power conventions and cultural black nationalist organizations. A common misunderstanding of Black Power is that cultural nationalists were only interested in the arts or in recreating African traditions. In fact, cultural nationalists were as political as the "revolutionary" nationalists. Cultural nationalists used the anthropological conception of "culture" in which political and economic systems were viewed as parts of the culture of a society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores the role of preventive sexual health beliefs (such as susceptibility) and gender norms about sexuality in adolescent sexual decision making. I draw on the Health Belief Model for a theoretical understanding of the predicted relationship between adolescents' preventive sexual health beliefs and behaviors. I argue, however, that this relationship is modified by adolescents' desire to behave in a manner consistent with the traditional performance of gender. Based on qualitative interviews with 25 adolescents, I conclude that sufficient evidence exists to support the contention that health beliefs interact with gender norms to reduce the likelihood that adolescents will make decisions that protect their sexual health. I conclude by offering suggestions on how the efficacy of school -based sex education programs could be improved by increased attention to the role of gender norms in adolescents' sexual decision making. Although divorce has been repeatedly shown to be negatively associated with physical and mental well-being, racial differences have been relatively neglected. Negative health outcomes are affected by the functioning of social arrangements, thus post-divorce racial differences may also represent the consequences of broader cultural and hierarchical context. In this paper, I propose to explore how divorced blacks and whites differ from their continuously married counterparts as measured by their self-reported health and depression scores. I expect that (1) blacks will suffer poorer health than whites; (2) divorced individuals of both races will suffer worse physical and mental health compared to the continuously married; but that (3) the health gap between the divorced and continuously married will be smaller for blacks than whites.
