In the chamber tombs of Murgia Timone (Matera), a considerable amount of Middle Bronze Age 3 pottery came to light that largely fall within the typological panorama of the traditional Apennine facies. However, the study of these finds, through a comparative analysis, made it possible to highlight the presence of other specific pottery types, belonging to the so-called “Punta Le Terrare” facies, recently defined by G. Recchia and C. Ruggini. This paper discusses the material culture of the site of Murgia Timone and analyses how it relates to these two already defined facies. One example is a drinking cup from tomb 2 of Murgia Timone with a handle characterized by a depression at the centre and lateral apexes. For this type, we can find very precise comparisons at Monopoli-Piazza Palmieri, Rissieddi, Le Pazze, Roca and Punta Le Terrare. In the same tomb some bowls with a very recessed rim were also found, two of which have some small vertical segments underneath the rim. This type, attested at Murgia Timone in four examples, is also present in Civita di Paterno (Potenza), but has also comparisons in Puglia, in the sites classified within the “facies of Punta Le Terrare”: Rissieddi, Roca, Egnazia - level IV and at Punta Le Terrare. A pot with a nozzle-handle, found into tombs 1 and 2, is significant for its similarity with artefacts from the upper layer of the Cardini Cave, Cave1 of Latronico and tombs 17 and 22 of the Podere Caravello necropolis. This vessel shape is mainly attested in central and south-western Italy during the Middle Bronze Age, but has been also found at Punta Le Terrare. These data show a distribution of types that does not always coincide with the areas where usually the facies is attested. Murgia Timone is in a key geographical position between the diffusion area of the “facies Punta Le Terrare”, from which it partially takes the pottery models, and the diffusion area of the Apennine facies in northern Puglia, Campania and Calabria. The pottery from Murgia Timone displays moreover numerous similarities with sites in the Tyrrhenian area (for example the Cardini Cave). This paper therefore focuses on a critical point related to the concept of facies: the definition of rigid boundaries does not apparently reflect the real distribution of pottery types, which often go beyond the canonical limits of defined facies. This observation points out that models widely circulate between different geographical and “cultural” areas.

The aim of the paper is to illustrate a sharing project of an on-line digital atlas of prehistoric structures, where scholars can share the products of their research or their discoveries, enrich their mind of knowledge through several updated comparisons, analyze any details of construction and related stratigraphy, identify main types, open discussions within the frame of interpretation of ancient features. Actually, particularly related to this meeting, the early phase of the project regards published protohistoric ovens and fireplaces, proposing a basic form to fill with information and documentation as well as introducing a general discussion on models and processes. Instead of proposing a classification the paper deals with indicating characters and markers recognizable in the archaeological context as well as building a conceptual map related to the ontology of use of fire in prehistory.

Since the last decades of XIX century, the term “terramare” denotes the Bronze Age settlement in the central Po plain and in recent scientific works it has been used as representative word to indicate the whole civilization of Middle and Recent Bronze Age. When Pigorini and Strobel in 1862 introduced this term they referred to the organic soil exploited as fertilizer connected to the marl well known in other european countries. This paper deals with the etymology of the term and, recovering old hypothesis advanced in early twentieth century, it suggests a different interpretation of his origin. Following the fortune of the term among all the scholars of the successful phase of research in XIX century, the papers concludes with a proposal of a well studied opportunity chosen by Luigi Pigorini to take advantage with a word new and pivot, but at the same time tied to solid and old roots.

This paper summarizes the results of investigations carried out by the University of Bologna in sector B part of the Bronze Age settlement of Mursia (Pantelleria). Main focus are the characters of structural dynamics of this part of the settlement that start in the late phases of Early Bronze Age with a true project of building planning made of oval elongated sunken huts, located in several parallel rows. Afterwards most of the huts are involved in several structural changes like the mere remaking of floors, or the abandonment of the structure or a different reorganization of space with new features. The sequence ends with a reorganization of the settlement marked by a latter planning scheme made of large oval huts with floor at the surface. The paper as well acts as general introduction for the following papers concerned with the investigations carried out in single huts or contexts and finds in sector B.

This paper is considering the area of exploitation of Campu Doinanicoro settlement (Municipalities of Dorgali and Orgosolo, NU) in the Supramonte region. From its environmental characteristics it is possible, through a territorial analysis with GIS software, to simulate the different ways of using land in antiquity. On the basis of the cereal consumption of a family group, in relation with the data collected by experimental archaeology on the cereals productivity (wheat and barley) and on ethnographic and archeozoological analyses on breeding (sheep and goats, pigs and cattle), the territory of the site is exploited in its various ecological areas: it allows to built some hypotheses on demography estimated by the capacity of food production. The result of the simulation of exploitation around the settlement and the carrying capacity can be useful elements for the reconstruction of land use and for the analysis of relationships among different settlements.

In this paper we outline a novel interdisciplinary field methodology that we will use in our research project `Salt and Power, Early States, Rome and Resource Control, funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and based at the Groningen Institute of Archaeology. The aim of the project is to gain insight in ancient salt production on the Italian Tyrrhenian coast in the framework of early state formation in Etruria and Latium Vetus. Our approach employs geophysical, chemical and archaeological methods to study both the briquetage and saltern production modes in their specific environmental and geographical contexts.

Available iconographic sources, historical records, archaeological data, related to ancient landscape analysis, are just a selection of necessary knowledge, reducing the possibility of a partial and limited reconstruction of the past. In this paper three examples, illustrated by ethnographic documents, will be taken in consideration: cereal fields; portions of woodland progressively deforested to obtain building material, fuel and tools; high-altitude pastures. For each of them practices of management, transport, conservation and transformation will be documented with iconographic sources and analysed in their problematic aspects. The interdisciplinary approach and the comparison among ethnographic, historical, and archaeological records with examples from Northern Italy (both western and eastern regions, so different in settlement pattern and in agricultural practices), allow to widen the analysis of protohistorical data compared with the documentation of recent activities. In such a way a reconstruction of the landscape, notwithstanding partial, built by peasants will be offered.

The Grotta di Pastena is a magnificent show-cave in central Italy. The most promising and best-preserved archaeological deposit of the site was found in Grotticella W2 (GW2), a small chamber opening in a difficult-to-reach sector of the cave. This area dates to the Middle Bronze Age and is characterised by several anthropic features, artefacts, and biological materials, suggesting a ritual use of the cave. In critically analysing the stratigraphy of GW2’s deposit, while integrating radiocarbon dating, archaeological and bioarchaeological studies, this paper aims to reconstruct the formation processes of the deposit and the human activity which took place here. The identified ritual markers have been compared with those found in other Italian and European coeval sites, thus corroborating the proposed interpretation and assisting in redefining a usually generic definition of ritual caves. Grotticella W2 appeared to have been used as a primary burial area, which later became a ritual centre for cult activity surrounding the life-death cycle.

The paper deals with a proposal of typology and chronology of the pottery uncovered inside the Boccadifalco settlement (PA), in light of the entire study of the potteries, made possible by the study of unpublished finds. The paper also clarifies the cultural attribution of the deposit thanks to numerous comparisons with other Sicilian sites of the Early Bronze Age.

The paper deals with the study of routes developed, starting from the Middle Neolithic, through the Sicani mountains, a fundamental passage of lines of communication that connected the Palermo coast to the Agrigento coast. The study of the location of the settlements and the morphology of the territory made it possible, with the help of the GIS, to reconstruct the development of the road network during historical and prehistoric periods.

This paper focusses on a particular aspect that emerges in the advanced phase of the Recent Bronze Age, namely the sometimes sudden and remarkable appearance of Terramare elements in pottery finds at some sites outside the Terramare area. Although in apparent continuity with the previous period, these finds point to a significant change in pottery production (in terms of type and decorative motives), suggesting changes in the socio-economic order and perhaps in the “ethnic” make-up of some communities. This is particularly evident in a number of settlements, some geographically distant from each another, namely in the Veneto, Tuscany, Romagna, the Marche, Campania, Puglia and Calabria, as already mentioned by Andrea Cardarelli in particular and other authors. These sites share a number of features regarding production materials, but we do not know whether this is an indication of the same cultural and/or ethnic identity. The main aim of this article is to analyse the development process of the Recent Bronze Age in Italy, obtaining a more precise definition of the period’s latter part, which marks the direct transition to the Final Bronze Age in the mid-12th century BC. This case study makes part of a wider debate on how to describe this similarity in material culture. We discuss how the relation with “typical” identities (material and ideological) of entities in specific geographical areas during the process of historical evolution between the Recent Bronze Age (RBA) and Final Bronze Age (FBA) can be described as “phase” or “chronological horizon” rather than in terms like culture or facies. Moscosi di Cingoli, subjected to systematic surveys but only partly published, is an emblematic site in understanding this period. Within the detailed stratigraphic sequence stretching from the Middle Bronze Age 3 (MB3) and continuing through the Recent Bronze Age (RBA), new elements appear at Moscosi that relate to the last occupation of this site. A number of significant elements found here suggest that this period may be a sub-stage of the RBA2, to be divided into RBA2a and RBA2b, or a new stage BR3, on the basis of a more detailed stratigraphic analysis of the materials. Already during the excavation at Moscosi and during the preliminary analysis of the materials, it was particularly evident that new types and new syntaxes were coming to light in the upper stratigraphic units, with innovative elements appearing in the stratigraphic sequence of the RBA2. These seem to be useful indicators of the final stage of the Recent Bronze Age, transitioning into the Final Bronze Age (in particular the Miradolo variety B dagger, the raised twisted handles, the carinated cups with shallow bellies and shoulders decorated with oblique or vertical grooves, the bowls with inward sloping rims decorated with horizontal grooves, and the bowl with an oblique lip decorated with zig-zag grooves).

The maritime dimension of the different cultures which archaeological research has defined over the years on the shores of the Mediterranean is often considered one of the most interesting elements for understanding how people moved around the Mediterranean basin during ancient times. Particularly for prehistory the need for a better investigation of the naval and nautical dimension of ancient peoples appears nowadays to be extremely urgent due to a lack of information about the Western Mediterranean that determined the birth of a diffusionist theory in accordance with the now surpassed ex oriente lux-theory. The recent development of naval archaeology as a proper discipline, and not just as a branch of maritime archaeology or commercial history, allows us to adopt a new paradigm. The possibility to examine a good number of wrecks as well as the naval iconography of the Mediterranean in the light of the knowledge we have about ancient naval technology is the base of our capability to propose a new interpretation of both the origins and the development of the ancient maritime networks that linked all peoples living around the Mediterranean coasts during the Bronze Age. On the one hand, the study of ancient ships and naval structures permits us to recognise different local traditions that originated in different places as well as to follow their development over the centuries. Further, by tracing their key elements we are able to recognise how and when some of these different traditions started to overlap or disappeared. On the other hand, the analysis of the nautical dimension of the different “cultures” of the Mediterranean, including their maritime commercial activities, nautical technology and wider relationship with the sea, permits us to recognise how, when and why we can start speaking about Levantine and Aegean maritime supremacy in the West. Far from proposing a complete interpretation of these phenomena, this paper will point to the role naval archaeology can play in the study of cultural interactions in the Mediterranean during the Bronze Age. The main aim is to pose some new questions in order to surpass the utilitaristic misuse of the naval dimension of ancient Mediterranean peoples that lived around the Mediterranean shores. This is often at the base of many misinterpretations of the naval role of the great eastern realms as well as of the small local communities of the West.

Starting from a systematic survey of the "combustion structures" for ceramics attested in the Italian peninsula during the Bronze Age (2200-950 BC) and the Iron Age (950-725 BC), this Paper will propose the reconstruction of different kiln types, paying attention also to the production areas where they have been identified- The main goal is to more accurately characterize this type of evidence, underlining similarities, differences and common aspects even among different sites during the chronological period under examination. The typology presented here turns out to be an original extension of those proposed so far and is made up of five types of furnaces: Open Firing (1); Pit Firing (2); Two pits Kiln with horizontal (3.1) or vertical structure (3.2); Single deep pit with vertical structure without perforated floor (4.1) or with perforated floor (4.2); and Fixed in stonework (5) The chrono-typological articulation of kilns not only reflects technical developments, namely the shift from simple kilns during earlier periods to more complex structures in later times, but it is also related to the organization of production during the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. The simplest types turn out to be the older ones, however, they are never wholly abandoned, and they are documented alongside the more recent types (even within the same sites), probably as a response to the need for producing different ceramic classes. The installation of such more complex kiln types is therefore put in relation to more specialized forms of craftsmanship, as evidenced by the presence of proper production areas in various sites. The work presented here, therefore, allows a more precise definition of both the ceramic cooking structures and the production areas. Thanks to an original and detailed type of evidence, which compares these archaeological data with ethno-archaeological and experimental studies, we can better understand a specific class of data, that of the "combustion structures", so much present in the investigated contexts.

The Palù di Livenza wetland lies at the foot of the Cansiglio plateau in the Pordenone area in north-east Italy. It preserves a Neolithic pile-dwelling settlement. Thanks to the richness of deposits, Palù di Livenza is inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO in the transnational serial property ‟Prehistoric pile-dwellings around the Alps” together with other 18 northern Italian localities. The latest investigations, carried out at the Sector 3 since 2013, have revealed a well-preserved stratigraphic sequence with three main phases of pile-dwellings ranging between the second half of the 5th and the first half of the 4th millennium cal BC. The paper presents the remains of a combustion feature, probably a hearth plaster plate, found during the last excavations campaigns in the abandonment levels attributed to the Late Neolithic phase.

Ovens with mobile elements have been known in the Bronze and Iron Ages of Western Europe since the 1970s (Sévrier oven). Traces attributable to the same production context have been recognized in numerous sites of the Early and developed Iron Age of Caput Adriae, from which come large quantities of concotto (fire-hardened clay) fragments. In this paper, we are representing a review of this kind of findings, together with technological, morphological and structural features useful for the definition of a possible model of the oven with mobile elements diffused in the Caput Adriae area during the Iron Age.

The paper deals with the study of firing structures of different sites present in the territory between Etna and the Catania Plain. We have analyzed both sites with a prevalent ritual character and settlements and we have presented different types of structures: hearths, firing pits, burning plates, stone platforms and ovens. In the case of settlements, for each type of structure, we tried to define, where possible, the function and the relationship with the other structures of the settlement.

The paper presents methodologies and results of experimental archaeology applied to the production of ancient pottery in high reduction environment. Manufacture of bucchero and black glazed pottery are tackled with different approaches of experimentation.

The paper proposes critical summary of the current data on fireplaces, ovens and furnaces identified in protohistoric Sardinia archaeological contexts between the Middle Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. The aim of the research is to offer a reflection both on the quantity and quality of data in order to the use of fire in archaeological contexts, and on the difficulties about to their recognition and to the related functional interpretation. The analysis was carried out on the basis of an updated repertory, including all the published evidence, with the aim of proposing the typological classification of combustion structures and of determining their features also in relation to the different areas of reference. It was necessary to identify a criterion for pyrotechnic structures classification that would take into account the type of context, morphology and, when possible, function. Traces of fire use have been identified in the archaeological stratifications, in more or less structured spaces and coinciding with different monumental evidences such as nuraghi, village areas, cultural complexes. In correspondence with these areas, within domestic, cultural or uncertain destination spaces, there are fireplaces and points of fire with widely varied structuring methods. Both combustion zones of different shapes and sizes without delimitation elements and structured hearths, defined by lithic elements, characterized by different levels of finishing and complexity, can be recognized. Ovens and furnaces are not well documented in quantitative terms but are better defined for their typological characteristics. The functional aspects have been examined through the recognition of indicators such as associated artifacts or other elements derived from the specific context and the spatial location of structures related to pyrotechnic activities.

The Bronze Age settlement of Mursia (XVIII – XV cent. BC) displays several examples of domestic structures related to the use of fire. They are mainly hearths and other features for food preparing, but also used for lighting and heating dwellings. They are mainly placed inside the huts, utilized repeatedly, presumably daily, by members of a small group, of family size. The most recurrent structure is the hearth constructed with four stone slabs, placed vertically, the so called lithic cist. They are of small size (side length from 25 to 60 cm) and allow to prepare fire and live charcoal in a safe place. Filling layers of these structures are usually made of ash and charcoal, while at the bottom or around the structure there are evident marks of firing. Beyond the basic interpretation of these structures as fireplace, it remains uncertain the details about use for firing or cooking and especially the interaction with other aspects of daily life. In some huts there are more than one hearths with the shape of lithic cists and in some cases we are sure they are contemporary, so we need to interpret it as a necessity to prepare a higher amount of food, or a different use. Very often the filling layer shows that the structure was regularly cleaned and the burned products removed. Very unusual is the discovery of a small coal-shovel made of a bone scapula placed next to the lithic cist. Another main aspect to investigate is also the way to manage the smoke disposal. Some post holes around the hearth suggest the presence of some kind of draw, made of a chimney or a simple cowl. At Mursia there are other types of structured fireplaces changing during the different phases of the settlement: stone slabs often combined with lithic hearths were used as cooking plates are peculiar in the earliest phase; round or oval cooking plates made of a thin layer of clay arranged above a bed of small stones or pottery fragments are typical of later phases. In small dwellings they are associated to andirons and kitchen ware. The aim of this paper is to define how these structures were used, stressing the changes in managing fire, preparing food in accordance with the archaeological phases of the settlement. The analysis of the structures concerns technical characters, the distribution inside the settlement, the association with other domestic facilities, as well as to go into the items (pottery, tools) related to the use of fire and to cooking. The first results of the micromorphological analysis carried on archaeological soil samples give additional information about the manufacture techniques and the sedimentary record of the hearts use and cleaning.

The aim of this paper is to summarize and reassess techniques and dynamics laying behind bread making for better understand the impact of this behaviour on the ancient social sphere. Within this frame, the analysis of ethnographic evidence is a valuable term of comparison with the archaeological record. The emerging picture from the pivotal case study of Sezze, shows that bread baking went well beyond simple subsistence purposes and was deeply affected by the community’s own social structure.

In the site of Selva dei Muli, located in the Sacco River Valley, relevant archaeological traces dating to the Copper Age have been unearthed by two different research teams at different times. Two main nuclei of finds and structures have been recognized. According to the Author of the latter excavations, these nuclei clearly differ both chronologically (two subsequent phases) and in terms of patterns of use of the area. In the first phase a ditched settlement was possibly located on the north-eastern slope of the hill. Then in the second phase the ditch was obliterated and the settlement also extended on the northern slope. In this paper the possibility that these two nuclei of finds are actually more integrated and belong to a single community is discussed.

The paper aims to analyze in detail the structure of the enclosed wall, dating to IX-VIII century BC, located on the top of the Monte Carbolino (Bassiano, LT). Geographical position and the possible relationships with other similar and contemporary sites nearby are also taken into consideration.

Following a synthesis of published archaeological investigations in the territory of Sezze by the team of the University of Groningen within the Pontine Region Project (PRP), this paper discusses the methodology and first results of two more recent fieldwork projects within the framework of the PRP, both funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO): 1) the Avellino Event Project (AVP) of the universities of Groningen and Leiden that studies the distal effects of the great Bronze Age eruption of mount Vesuvius on the human environment of the Fondi and Pontine plains. 2) the Minor Centres project that studies the development of the settlements of Forum Appi and Ad Medias along the Via Appia in relation with the development of the Roman countryside. Both projects add significantly to the long term reconstruction of the human landscape in the plain south of Sezze as well as open up perspectives on further interdisciplinary work.

Starting from a systematic survey of the "combustion structures" for ceramics attested in the Italian peninsula during the Bronze Age (2200-950 BC) and the Iron Age (950-725 BC), this Paper will propose the reconstruction of different kiln types, paying attention also to the production areas where they have been identified-The main goal is to more accurately characterize this type of evidence, underlining similarities, differences and common aspects even among different sites during the chronological period under examination.The typology presented here turns out to be an original extension of those proposed so far (CUOMO DI CAPRIO 1971, NEGRONI CATACCHIO 1995, IAIA 2009, LEVI 2010, MOFFA 2014) and is made up of five types of furnaces: Open Firing (1); Pit Firing (2); Two pits Kiln with horizontale (3.1) or vertical structure (3.2); Single deep pit with vertical structure without perforated floor (4.1) or with perforated floor (4.2); and Fixed in stonework (5)The chrono-typological articulation of kilns not only reflects technical developments, namely the shift from simple kilns during earlier periods to more complex structures in later times, but it is also related to the organization of production during the Bronze Age and the Iron Age.The simplest types turn out to be the older ones, however, they are never wholly abandoned, and they are documented alongside the more recent types (even within the same sites), probably as a response to the need for producing different ceramic classes. The installation of such more complex kiln types is therefore put in relation to more specialized forms of craftsmanship, as evidenced by the presence of proper production areas in various sites.The work presented here, therefore, allows a more precise definition of both the ceramic cooking structures and the production areas. Thanks to an original and detailed type of evidence, which compares these archaeological data with ethno-archaeological and experimental studies, we can better understand a specific class of data, that of the "combustion structures", so much present in the investigated contexts.

The pile dwelling was discovered in 1955 in the valley of the river Menago, just a few hundred meters south of the settlement of Tombola di Cerea (VR). A first excavation was carried out that very year by Francesco Zorzi, director of the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale of Verona; the digging has been resumed in 1999 by the Soprintendenza Archeologica of Veneto. The results of these excavations have ascertained that the prehistoric dwelling site was built in a marshy environment. Only some vertical poles and some horizontal beams were preserved, which leads to the hypothesis that there existed a wooden platform on which the sheds were standing. The structural elements of the palafitte find correspondents in others settlements in moist environment from the Middle Bronze Age. The paleogeographic reconstruction of the immediate hinterland confirm the location of the site at the center of the Menago River Paleovalley, an incision a few hundred meters wide and more than ten meters deep, at the base of a thick layer of peat. Previous studies, related to the origin of the deep incision generated by the homonymous spring-line river, mainly refer to geodynamic factors linked to buried tectonic lines, as main motives for the incisions caused by the diversion of Adige breach-channels captured towards the basin of Great Veronese Valleys, which occurred in the late Lateglacial-Holocene age. The analysis of new lithostratigraphies detected on exposures inside the paleovalley, has led to find the presence of a thick and almost continuous filling of organic-peaty sediments, which mark the accretions and the sedimentations verified starting from the basal levels of the pile-dwelling site, depositions that have lasted until fairly recent dates. A series of detailed comparisons made with the terms of the peat-debris-filling sequences of the basin that developed outside the embankments of the near and coeval Fondo Paviani site, led to verify a similar evolution in the growths that mark the upper reaches of these two important alluvio-organic successions. Ultimately, is claimed that the same incidence, of anthropogenic and climatic factors, is involved as the main contributors to the development of the upper fills of the Menago Paleovalley, in correspondence with the pile-dwelling station of the Tombola di Cerea and the embanked site of Fondo Paviani. A great number of ceramic fragments (ca 620 kg) and a smaller amount of bronze, terracotta and bone-horn artefacts had been found. This paper focus on chrono-typological analysis of the archaeological finds, in particular on ceramic of the medium-fine tipe. The goal is the overall classification artefacts, accompanied by a comparison made from materials found in geographically nearbysites. Dendrochronology and radiocarbon allow to date the wooden structures to the second half of the 15th Century cal BC, or in the first decades of the 14th Century cal BC at the latest; the vertical posts come from oak tree felled down once about every ten years. Archaeobotanical study includes pollen analysis carried out on 18 subsamples taken from a core collected in the pile-dwelling settlement and carpological and xilo-anthacological analysis, from 2 samples taken from layers (stratigraphic units) corresponding to the bottom of the core. The results allows to draw the environmental framework of the settlement. The pollen diagram shows that the landscape was rich of wet environments: ponds, wet grassland and hygrophilous wood. The human activity was suggested by a number of anthropogenic indicators: cereal fields, ruderals and weeds. Seeds/fruits and pollen data testify to the presence in the area of edible fruits from plants such as blackthorn, hazelnut, currant, walnut and grapevine. The finds of Baldellia ranuncoloides – a threatened plants today - underline that the archaeobotanical research provide naturalistic information that allow us to better understand the history of plant species becoming rare today. The faunal assemblage is composed by 1995 bone remains. More than 80% of the faunal remains was identified at species level. Domestic animals are the most frequent. Age at death highlights different breeding strategies focused on meat consumption and secondary products. Hunting was barely practiced on wild ungulates (red deer, roe deer, wild boar). Several anthropic marks were identified on the faunal remains emphasizing the use of lithic and metal tools. During the analysis 18 animal hard material artefacts were identified. The good state of preservation allowed us to identify working traces linked to the reduction sequences of the tools.

Earthen architectural fragments (burned or cemented) are often collected during the excavation in Italian prehistoric and protohistoric sites. The technological characterization of these remains is relevant to recognize the existence of local or regional building traditions and to understand the exploitation of raw materials and, more in general, the ancient production strategies. In addition to the current macroscopic analysis (morphology of fragments and classification of pastes) and before the realization of archaeometric analysis, it’s possible to complete the analytical protocol of daub with some observations in polished section. To realize a polished section, the daub sample is cut and the resulting section is polished with sandpaper. The realization of this kind of section allows a better description of the arrangement of the constituents, to identify the processes of transformation and deformation of raw materials during the building activity. The aim of these mesoscopic analysis is to characterize the behavioral chain referred to the processing of raw materials and their installation, linking the observed characteristics to specific actions. It’s possible to obtain some functional data about the original function of the earthen structures or the dynamics of entrance in the archaeological record a well. This paper presents some case-studies and some preliminary keys to understand the features observed in polished section. The use of this analytical technique gives some encouraging results, especially in comparing the number of relevant data to the low cost of production of a polished section.

The paper deals with the problem of metal weapons from contexts of southern Italy and Sicily between the half of 15th and the half of 13th century BC. Weapons and related military schemes seem to develop gradually through the definition of standards of technology and function, traditionally associated to the swords of Pertosa Type. The accurate analysis of many specimens from Sicily allowed to make clear the level of relations/differences in the weapons of treated contexts, in order to define the "Thapsos Type", distinct and independent from Pertosa Group

This paper presents a new proposal of classification of the pottery found at the Bronze Age site of Mursia elaborated by the research group of the University of Bologna, after several campaigns of investigation. Among the methods of evaluation and terminology for the classification of ceramics, it has been assigned more importance to production and functional use of vessels. Especially principles based on the presence of handles and on the rate between diameter and height allow to suggest ancient procedures and use of each category and consequently to aid operators in cataloguing finds. This proposal is therefore useful as reference grid for the classification of pottery from sector B of Mursia and for a comparison with other studies and investigations devoted to the Bronze Age of the Italian Peninsula and Sicily.

This paper deals with main results of investigations carried out since 2003 till 2013 in the north-western area of sector B, inside the Bronze Age settlement of Mursia (Pantelleria island), traditionally named Northern Area. The archaeological sequence belongs to the most recent phases of the settlement (XVI-XV cent.BC). The stratigraphic analysis and the evaluation of architectural remains allow to identify three main macro-phases with a lively settlement dynamics that include frequent and quick changes inside a continuous process of transformations. The abandonment of the settlement around the mid of XV cent.BC concludes the sequence. The analysis of plenty and diversified pottery production of these recent phases allowed to go in depth into the comprehension of the facies of Mursia with a proposal of recognition of representative types of the recent phases of the settlement.

This paper summarizes the results of researches carried out in the area next to the modern village of Bagnara di Romagna (RA), where several evidences related to a Bronze Age settlement have been collected. Recently test trenches and surface collections allowed to retrieve bronze and ceramics dating from the Middle Bronze Age (phase BM2) to the Recent Bronze Age (phase BR2). The analysis of landscape and the palaeoenvironmental reconstruction complete the outline of the region of Imola, Faenza and Lugo during the Bronze Age where are well known the ancient settlements of Solarolo, via Ordiere, Monte Castellaccio end S. Giuliano di Toscanella.

This paper summarizes the results of researches carried out in S. Giovanni in Triario (North-East plain of Bologna) by piecing together several heterogeneous data coming from old rescue soundings' reports, aerial photo-interpretation and recent investigations consisting of core drillings and surface surveys. Thanks to new inspections on the deposit and the study of a consistent sample of artifacts it is now possible to outline the main cultural and chronological features of this Late Bronze Age settlement., Questo articolo riassume i risultati delle ricerche condotte a S. The paper proposes a predictive model to simulate an ancient landscape in the Eastern Lessinia (Northeastern Italy) during the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. The aim is to calculate, using GIS tools, the optimal locations for settlements considering some environmental factors that could have affected human decisions. The purpose of this paper is to describe methods of documentation and detection techniques used on the archaeological site of Mursia (Pantelleria, TP) in order to build three-dimensional models of a hut and a stone mortar. The software measures three-dimensional coordinates of a finite set of points on the object using two photographs taken from different positions (stereo pairs). In particular, we explore some technical aspects of data processing like quickness, measurement accuracy, information content of record and equipments cost.

The paper deals with the recent excavation of a Late Bronze Age settlement at Meldola (FC), presumably coinciding with XIX cent. discoveries. The settlement is located in the hill upland inside a region scarcely documented for the protohistorical period and interesting for a reconstruction of the settlement pattern. The pottery found at the site shows a full adherence to the Subappenninic with several analogies in Romagna and Middle Adriatic lands. The evaluation of faunistic remains extends the analysis of the site.

Si presentano i risultati dello scavo della monumentale Tomba IV, nella necropoli dell'Età del Bronzo di Sa Figu (Ittiri-SS): una tomba ipogeica del tipo a "prospetto architettonico", che riproduce in roccia gli elementi caratteristici della "tomba di giganti" nuragica. L'indagine archeologica ha confermato la datazione di questa classe di ipogei al Bronzo Medio iniziale (fase di Sa Turricula), in sintonia con le coeve tombe di giganti megalitiche. Nelle tombe di sa Figu è anche attestato un riuso nell'Età del Ferro, chiarendo in parte gli aspetti funerari di questa fase del Nuragico tardo. Si chiarisce, inoltre, la derivazione delle tombe ipogeiche a "prospetto architettonico" dal modello megalitico di tomba di giganti, di cui esse sono imitazione, recuperando la tradizione ipogeica delle "domus de janas" neolitiche., This paper presents the results of excavation in the 4th Tomb belonging the Bronze Age necropolis of Sa Figu, near Ittiri (Sassari-Sardinia): a rock-cut tomb of the "architectonic prospect" type, reproducing the characteristic elements of the nuragic "giant's tomb". Archaeological excavation has confirmed the chronology of these tombs, during the first phase of Middle Bronze Age (named "Sa Turricula"), according with the dating of similar megalithic tombs. Iron Age re-use of this tomb are also detected, explaining some aspects of the burial context in the final phase of Nuragic civilization. The paper deals with sunken dwellings, known with the old term “fondi di capanna” dating to the mid of XIX cent. The up-to dated documentation of subterranean structures, the evalutation of several features and the proposal of several analytical approaches, propose not to exclude the interpretation of residential function, as suggested recently by many scholars. Instead, according the analysis of several parameters, it is necessary to detail in a better way this hypothesis. The conclusive interpretation presumes that the settlement pattern is so articolated and diversified, depending from environmental conditions, function and durability. We propose to enrich the documentation and the comparison in order to support the reasoning process in the archaeological research, without preconceived ideas.

Si presentano i primi risultati dello scavo estensivo condotto nell'insediamento preistorico di Cattolica, via Carpignola (RN). Il contributo affronta le problematiche relative al trattamento dei dati di scavo, solitamente rappresentati da una ingente mole di documentazione e presenta una sperimentazione di analisi di distribuzione realizzate in ambiente GIS. L’insediamento neolitico di Sammardenchia, costituisce un caso di studio esemplare sia per risolvere i problemi di digitalizzazione dei dati acquisiti durante numerose campagne di scavo, precedenti la diffusione degli strumenti informatici, sia per procedere alla sperimentazione di tecniche di analisi di distribuzione.
