The purpose of the investigation was to comprehensively assess working conditions and their impact on the health of female workers engaged in the manufacture of present-day paper wallpaper. A complex of sanitary-and-hygienic, clinical-and-physiological, sociomedical, and statistical studies was used to tackle the tasks set in the investigation. Stage 1 made a sanitary-and-hygienic assessment of industrial factors (microclimate, noise, vibration, the content of toxicants and dust) in the workplaces of female workers from the papering shops using an Elita rolling automatic machine. The following stage analyzed morbidity among the workers and identified a number of functional parameters. A combination of poor factors characterizing their parameters and exceeding the sanitary standards influenced on the workers engaged in the manufacture of paper wallpaper. The leading harmful industrial factors are heating microclimate, production noise, and the working air level of harmful chemical substances in the working air. The production process under such microclimatic conditions causes the body's thermal changes characterized by the senses of total warm discomfort and the tension of thermoregulatory mechanisms, as confirmed by weighed mean skin temperature studies and decreased working capacity. The working conditions in the manufacture of wallpaper products are shown to result in an increase in female morbidity.

This paper reviews the results of complex laboratory examinations among workers manufacturing fiber glass. The most pronounced and early changes in oxidative metabolism processes (reduced catalase activity, increased malonic dialdehyde) and rates of blood serum lipid metabolism indicators were determined, increased values of leukocyte indices of intoxication, violations in the immune status. Changes were detected in workers even with a small length of service (5 years) and young age (20-30 years). With increasing length of service in the workplace, the frequency of these violations increased.Based on the data obtained we have developed laboratory markers that are suitable for diagnosing early preclinical disorders among fiber glass manufacturing workers., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

The paper reviews literature on the current aspects of the diagnosis and expert appraisal of focal osteoplastic masses in the lung upon dust exposure to dust factors. It considers different aspects of the pathogenesis of osteoplastic changes in the tissue structural elements of pulmonary histione. Current views on the prevalence, etiology, and pathogenesis, as well as morphological changes in the development of this abnormality, its association with the dust damaging effects of human activities are reflected.

It considers the impact of psychosocial stress on the risk of hypertension, coronary heart disease, and cardiovascular events in representatives of different professional groups.

The paper presents a comprehensive sanitary - hygienic assessment of working conditions for female workers in dairy enterprises located in different climatic regions. On the basis of this assessment, a set of preventive measures aimed at improvement of the working conditions and the health state offemale workers may be developed and implemented.

This paper presents the results of the systemic approach to the protection of health and prophylaxis of disability in the workers of industrial enterprises. The leading role in the technologies of rehabilitation (both short-term and long-term one) is played by the natural and physical therapeutic factors. The priority in the implementation of the therapeutic and health-promoting measures is given to the treatment based on the spa and health resort facilities as well as the factory health centers.

The dynamics and structure of the occupational morbidity rate in main branches of the industry in the Eastern Siberia for the 2000-2015 (on the example of the Irkutsk region) is presented in this paper. During the observation period there were noted the significant gain in the number of cases of occupational diseases registered in such different branches of industry as Coal and Lignite Mining, ship and aircraft building, and in some other branches (metallurgical production, air transport, pulp production, electric power distribution industry). In the structure of the occupational morbidity leading positions are occupied by diseases associated with the exposure to physical factors, industrial aerosols, physical overload and overexertion of certain organs and systems. The main reasons and factors contributing to the gain of the occupational morbidity rate are the imperfection of technological processes, working places, personal protective equipment and/or their lack, constructive defects of machines and equipment, the violation of safety regulations, regimen of the work and rest, insufficiently high level of medical and preventive maintenance, delayed making of decisions for the rational employment to the workers with the revealed early forms of occupational diseases. There pointed out priority directions of the prevention the implementation of which will allow to decline the level of the occupational morbidity rate. The main directions are the implementation of economically caused mechanisms of the interest in the preservation of workers ’ health; implementation of the regional aimed programs; the introduction of new processes, equipment and mechanisms meeting modern hygienic requirements; the assessment of occupational risk with the creation and implementation of the system of monitoring for the dynamics of working conditions and the state of the workers ’ health for the making corrective management solutions on the optimization and elevation of the efficacy and relevance of developed and implemented preventive health measures.

In the paper there are reported the results of the performance of hygiene assessment of working conditions in petrochemical industry. The studies have shown that workers' body is exposed to a complex of hazardous occupational factors including a chemical factor, noise, the severity and intensity of the working process. An overall assessment of working conditions corresponds to Class 3.3.

The objective of the present paper was to review international and national standards for the criteria of assessment of the noise-induced occupational loss of hearing. The importance of healthy hearing for the occupational safety is emphasized which implies the necessity of the more rigorous criteria for hearing conservation in the workers engaged in the noisy technological environment compared with those for the general population. A rationale for the development of the standard program of hearing conservation in the workers engaged in the noisy technological environment is proposed including hygienic norms and rules or national state standards.

The paper presents data on the frequency of polymorphisms of candidate genes involved in the formation of endothelial dysfunction--endothelin-1 (EDN1 Lys198Asn) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (NOS3 T786C) together with the concentrations of their active products (nitric oxide, endothelin-1) in individuals with chronic mercury intoxication. The concentration change of nitric oxide and endothelin-1 indicates the presence of endothelial dysfunction in the individuals examined. The studied polymorphisms appeared to play a minor role in the pathogenesis of endothelial dysfunction in patients with chronic mercury intoxication.

In the paper there are considered the problems arising from the use of respirators: 1. Modern methods used to replace the gas mask filter, 2. Conditions for safe re-use filters which are not fully developed their service life period 3. The conditions of safe use ofrespiratory protective equipment (RPE) in the immediately dangerous air pollution. Measures for the protection of health, based on the common practice of using RPE in the developed countries, which include: the development and application of regulations governing the selection and the use of respirators, filter replacement, training of staff have been proposed.

The objective of the present work was to develop unified criteria for the evaluation of the severity of noise-induced hearing loss. Current approaches to taking expert decisions based on the results of medical examination of the patients with impaired hearing are substantially different due to the considerable difference between the criteria for the estimation of hearing envisaged by the international classification, occupational pathology classification, and the national system of medico-social expertise. We undertook an attempt to correct and harmonize the existing criteria for the estimation of severity of occupational hearing loss based on the integration of all the three classification in order to "reduce them to a common denominator" and thereby to ensure the basis for the unified diagnostic and expert decisions for the cases of hearing impairment of any etiology. The project proposed in this paper makes it possible to use unified criteria for the assessment of the degree of hearing loss caused by occupational noises for diagnostic purposes and expertise compatible with the internationally accepted approaches.

This paper considers the features of disorders of immunity in chronic exposure to vinyl chloride at work and in experimental animals. It is shown that one of the earliest and most sensitive indicators of the formation of the resistance of the organism employed in the manufacture of vinyl chloride, are: IgM, IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, autoantibodies to neurospecific proteins (S-100, Vd-Ca channels and DNA).

The paper presents results of a study of the functional state of major workers of the refinery "Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat" when exposed to hazardous working conditions. The results have shown adverse effects of chemical factors of working environment and the intensity of the labor process on the functional state of the body of workers that shows a violation of efficiency and adaptability of the their organism to the working conditions.

The paper describes 3 cases of ornithosis that could be detected by clinical and laboratory studies using immunological assays. In one case, its diagnosis was made late when the infection occurred in a woman working in a travel agency in Cyprus. The two other cases having an occupational contact (pet shop workers) were observed to have its acute form. All the described cases showed lung involvement characterized by external respiratory failure, one of the most common manifestations of ornithosis (psittacosis). Among the practically used laboratory tests, the indirect hemagglutination reaction is an accessible and effective serological assay for the diagnosis of ornithosis.

The paper provides the results of assessment of prior and posterior occupational risks and those of questionnaire analysis in foundry shop workers from machinery enterprises. According to the data of attestation of job places, the working conditions of major foundry occupations were ascertained to correspond to class 3, grades 1 to 3. The prior risk for occupational respiratory diseases (RD) was defined as moderate whereas the posterior risk was high. According to the results of a questionnaire survey, more than half of the workers sought medical advice for bronchopulmonary pathology. Determination of whether there is, in terms of the etiological share, a cause-and-effect relationship between RDs and working conditions has shown that the occupation was highly responsible, which suggests that harmful industrial factors make a considerable contribution to the development of RDs in the workers of the enterprises under study.

The paper gives the basic results of studying the polymorphic loci of the genes of xenobiotic transformation enzymes, antioxidative defense, and DNA repair in petrochemical workers. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism assay was used to identify markers of the predisposition to the development of toxic hepatitis in men and impaired reproduction in women.

The paper considers current methods for assessing the workers' health status. It shows it possible to identify increased quantities of acute-phase serum proteins upon exposure to the negative factors characteristic of the Astrakhan gas processing plant. A wider range of tests for acute-phase tissue and serum proteins is proposed to be included in order to gain a fuller insight into the influence of unfavorable industrial factors on man and to make monitoring that enables the existing health risks and the efficiency of preventive measures to be controlled.

The paper raises the question as to whether essential hypertension should be included into a list of occupational diseases (intellectual, sensory, and emotional workloads and working conditions) in engine crew members. In the engine crew members of the South-Eastern Railway, the cases and days lost because of illness and temporary disability are higher than those in the whole railway. 32% of the engine drivers (assistants) are followed up for diagnosed essential hypertension. Hypertension (49.7%) is the main reason for suspending engine crew members from work as evidenced by train pre-trip medical examinations. The working conditions (noise, infrasound, mcroclimate) in train engineer's cabs do not meet the sanitary requirements; in this connection the occupational disease sensorineural hearing loss is also registered.

Methodological approaches and strategy have been developed to choose informative laboratory biomarkers for the early and preclinical diagnosis and to detect the negative influence of harmful industrial and environmental factors. The paper considers whether the diagnostic value of laboratory tests can be defined, by studying the relationship of endogenous exposure (effect) and the proportion of subjects with the changed level of a biomarker (response) to the dose of a substance, stage of disease, and length of service. Due to the polysyndromic pattern of many occupational diseases, it is shown to be most expedient to carry out a few tests characterizing different aspects of the pathogenesis of disease. Methodological approaches to developing a set of informative biomarkers have been proposed.

The paper gives data on the prevalence and pattern of chronic bronchopulmonary diseases (CBPD) in 188 workers engaged in carbonyl production of nickel versus 162 auxiliary process workers. Chronic bronchitis was the most common disease in both groups (11.2 and 5.6%, respectively). 9.6% of the carbonyl production workers were found to have toxic pneumofibrosis developing mainly in those having a service length of more than 20 years. As compared with auxiliary process workers, the nickel production process workers had a higher risk of CBPD (odds ratio 1.80; 95% confidence interval 1.00-3.22; p = 0.04496) who also came to the front in the pattern of occupational diseases (73.2% of all cases).

The paper describes the first attempt to isolate and identify the microbiocenosis associated with the objects of a morphological laboratory that uses formalin. The study identified the following microorganisms: the bacteria Bacillus sp., Providencia alcalifaciens, and Staphylococcus aureus, the micromycetes Scopulariopsis brevicaulis, Aspergillus sp., Hormodendron sp., and the mites Dermatophagoides pterronissimus. There is experimental evidence that these organisms are resistant to formalin. The representatives of this cenosis can negatively affect the health of the workers, which requires the development of the optimal technologies of biomaterial fixation.

The paper presents the basic etiological and pathogenetic aspects of occupational allergic diseases of the respiratory tract, discusses the clinical course, diagnosis, and priorities of the prevention of allergic diseases of the upper airways and bronchopulmonary apparatus from the action of industrial allergens.

Level of efficiency of CERAGEM MASTER CGM-M3500 treatment device applied for occupational patients suffering from bronchi and lung pathological states has been shown in the paper. Positive effects of treatment have been assessed as reliably high and were proved by improvement of clinical and functional indices, subjunctive self-evaluation of health by patients and positive signs in the clinical course of the diseases. Diagnostic complex has been analyzed, including hematological indicators of the peripheral blood, oxygenation of the capillary blood, immunology. Also dynamics of the clinical course has been studied along with the data on self-assessment of health by patients prior and after the therapy by the device. Prospects on treatment of occupational bronchi and lung pathologies with the help of multifunctional massage device are being discussed in the paper.

The paper presents the results of transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) in treating patients with vibration disease and occupational lumbosacral radiculopathy. It is shown that the inclusion of TES in the program of rehabilitation therapy gives a more pronounced clinical effect, helps to reduce pain, has psychological correcting antidepressant action significantly, improves the quality of life of patients. The study results enable to recommend TES in the complex medical and rehabilitative measures as an effective and pathogenetically substantiated method of treatment of patients with occupational diseases of the nervous system.

The paper describes risk factors for environment-induced diseases in road-patrol (RP) officers under the existing working conditions: noise and chemical ambient air pollution from motor vehicles. There is evidence for a significant increase in the incidence of diseases of the cardiovascular and nervous system, sense organs, digestive and endocrine metabolic systems in the State Road Safety Inspectorate officers who are directly engaged in traffic management. Potential and real risks from motor transport to the health of RP roads have been estimated. Recommendations on optimizing the working conditions are given.

The paper outlines the criteria of noise pathologies in aviation specialists after extended period of exposure to high-intensity noise and infrared sound. Analysis of morbidity and clinical researches shows prevalence of such pathologies as neurosensory deafness, hypertension and discirculatory encephalopathy. These disorders were correlated with career length.

The paper assesses a dust factor and establishes its etiological proportion in the development of respiratory diseases in workers from mining enterprises in different regions of Russia. Service-length groups at risk for upper tract diseases, criteria for early diagnosis, and a risk for occupational respiratory tract diseases were identified in miners. Trends in humoral factors of immunity were revealed in the workers without bronchopulmonary abnormalities. The efficiency of a scientifically grounded management system for an occupational risk of respiratory tract diseases was evaluated in miners.

The increasing amount of industrial waste generates a need for its use as recycled materials. The paper presents the results of hygienic assessment of metallurgic slag crushed stone to be added to natural materials in highway building. The research program has included the measurement of content of water-soluble forms of metals, the evaluation of the acute toxicity of waste after oral administration to mice and rats, the study of the toxicity of waste by biotesting and the activity of natural radionuclides. The slag crushed stone virtually lacks water-soluble elements when it contains a high level of bulk forms of metals. According to acute toxicity for warm-blooded animals, the slag crushed stone belongs to Hazard Class IV by GOST 12.1.007-76 (low hazard substances). The biotesting on hydrocoles, the slag crushed stone is also referred to as Class IV (low hazard substances). In terms of the level of natural radionuclides, the slag crushed stone poses no hazard to the environment. The performed studies give grounds to recommend metallurgical slag crushed stone to be added to natural materials for highway building.

The paper considers the development of fatigue in civil pilots in relation to the specific features of a flight shift, the duration of a flight, the size of a crew size, and the number of night flight hours. The flight lasting 28 consecutive days negatively affects the pilot's working capacity, with flight hours exceeding 90 hours, due to accumulated fatigue. At the stages "before landing" and "after landing", the degree of fatigue in aircraft commanders depends on the duration of a flight shift, peaking with the flights lasting more than 10-13 working hours. Inclusion of additional crewmen during flight shifts of more than 12 hours results in a reduction in the degree of fatigue in aircraft commanders. Night air departure and arrival are most unfavorable according to the degree of fatigue in aircraft commanders, i.e. the length of night time during flights, they are followed by a night air departure and daylight air arrival; a daylight air departure and night arrival rank third. Flights with daylight departure and daylight arrival are least of all exhausting. A night air arrival is characterized by the greatest degrees of integral fatigue at the stages "before landing" and "after landing", these are little associated with the duration of a flight shift. The existing provision, that such flights may be made thrice in succession, carries a risk for chronic fatigue. It is proposed to permit not more two flight shifts in succession during night air arrival. It is shown that it is necessary to take into account the factor of possible fatigue development on developing the regulation of flight shifts.

The paper assesses the traditional and current methods in the organization of providing workers with medical and prophylactic products. It raises the question as to the value of milk as a detoxicant, an antidote, that aids in eliminating harmful substances from the organism of workers who are in contact with noxious occupational factors. Consideration of this issue may be presently regarded as actually urgent and timely since present-day developments in preventive nutrition of the population provide a possibility of using foods (beverages) that are of great rational benefit to the health of the persons exposed to poor industrial factors.

The paper deals with the problem of optimization of working conditions of engine drivers in the control cabs of up-to-date locomotives, by toughening the sanitary-and-hygienic requirements for the levels of bad industrial factors. The authors associate the optimization of working conditions with the necessity of strengthening the reliability of their driving activity due to the increasing rail movement speeds and the transfer to one-person rolling-stock operation, and other factors.

The paper discusses a problem of high occupational and occupation-induced overall morbidity in medical workers and shows that a discrepancy between the existing system for individual protection of the personnel and specific working conditions and hazardous factors is one of the causes. The authors have developed regional guidelines "Enhancing the efficiency of individual respiratory protection in the workers of health care facilities" which provide evidence-based guidelines for the usage of certified, ergonomically acceptable respiratory protective means at the health care facilities. The main task of medical recommendations is to change the established stereotype in using lowly effective gauze bandages and surgical protective facial masks as respiratory protective means at the therapeutic-and-prophylactic institutions for the personnel.

This paper presents data on the prevalence of occupational diseases of ENT organs dominated by occupational neurosensory deafness (NSD). The prevalence of occupational NSD is highest among the personnel of civilian aviation and the workers employed in mining ore industry. The author emphasizes the utmost importance of timely and high-accuracy diagnostics of ENT organ pathology during prophylactic medical examinations of people exposed to occupational hazards. Information on the state of upper respiratory tracts affected by industrial aerosols that cause irritation and allergic reactions is considered. Special attention is given to the development of methods for diagnosis of occupational oncological diseases and voice disturbances in the voice-and-speech profession.

The objective of the present paper is to review the main stages of investigations into the mechanisms of occupational loss of hearing in the light personnel of civilian aviation starting from the early period in the development of aviation (the first decades of the XXth century) up to the present time. Much attention is given to clinical and audiologic studies involving the flight personnel, elaboration of guidelines and instructions on elucidation, diagnosis, and expert examination of occupational deafness in the personnel of civilian aviation. Prospects for handling the problem in this country are discussed.

The paper presents microphotos of anomalies of the human buccal mucosal epitheliocytic nucleus and gives criteria for their identification. Two procedures for making a scrape from the buccal mucosa were compared. The smears prepared from the samples taken with a urogenital brush showed the lower frequency of cells with micronuclei, protrusions of the "broken egg" and "tongue" types, vacuolated cells, as well as cells with nuclear pyknosis and lysis than those prepared with a rough scrape spatula. The nuclear frequency of cells with condensed chromatin in such smears was higher than that in the rough scrape. In addition, the authors show a relationship of the frequency of cells with the binuclei, perinuclear vacuole, nuclear pyknosis, and condensed chromatin in the nucleus, and absorbed apoptotic (residual) bodies to the examinee's age.

To study the specific features of the burnout syndrome (BOS) in communicative professional workers, the authors examined 138 communicative workers (94 females and 44 males); of them there were 51 physical education masters, 43 elementary school teachers, 20 consulting shop assistants, and 24 legal officers. BOS was detected in more than two thirds of elementary school teachers and more than a third of physical education masters, consulting shop assistants, legal officers, and practitioners. The completely developed BOS was most frequently encountered in elementary school teachers (in every four individuals), slightly less frequently in practitioners, consulting shop assistants, and legal officers (in every ten persons). The highest BOS levels were observed in elementary school teachers having a service length of less than 5 years and in legal officers and practitioners having a service length of more than 10 years. The paper provides evidence for the expediency of complex preventive measures for the representatives of these professions and for psychological support of their professional activities.

The paper deals with nutrition and heath in Kuzbass miners. Studies were conducted in the Berezovskaya and Percomayskaya mines in the town of Berezovsk, Kemerovo Region. The actual nutrition was studied in 500 underground workers, by using a 24-hour reproduction method. The macrostructure of food intake by Kuzbass miners and the density of their daily rations were not shown to be in compliance with hygienic recommendations. This creates prerequisites for inadequate intake of nutrients and biologically active substances. Risks of inadequate provision with essential nutrients and biologically active substances are defined. It is necessary to develop miners' nutrition optimizing measures including hygienic nutrition education.

The paper evaluates the health status of shoe factory workers. Diseases of the nervous and cardiovascular systems, liver, gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts, and thyroid are prominent in the structure of morbidity in the workers.
