This article discusses the commercial trading port of Matamoros in Mexico during the first half of the 19th century. The author comments on the importance of the trading port in maritime commerce and trade, both domestically and internationally. He also considers the establishment and development of trading posts and relations with other countries, including Cuba, the United States, and various European nations. The creation of various trading companies in Matamoros during this time period is also explored.

Abstract

The article discusses the export of wine and liquors from Spain to Nueva España, or New Spain, now modern day Mexico, at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries. Particular focus is given to the development of commerce in New Spain, including references to the historical role played by the ports of Veracruz and Campeche, Mexico. Subjects include the Anglo-Spanish War of 1779-1783, the military intervention of French emperor Napoleon in Spain, and the Mexican War of Independence.
