Vivian (Julia Roberts) from Pretty Woman--arguably the most prominent character in popular culture engaged in prostitution--is agential (sets her prices, chooses her clients, sets the terms of sex acts, enforces condom use, and rejects pimp-control). A product of her environment, (without a high school degree, abusive mother, stigmatized and treated as a commodity by some men) she is ultimately "rescued" by a kind "john." With few Americans knowing individuals who sell sex, images of Vivian remain among the dominant public images of prostitution. Visual media has the power to impact public ideologies, and forms the basis of our ideas about marginalized or hidden groups (McCombs 2013; Schramm and Roberts 1971). For individuals who sell sex, both public policy and public perception operate in tandem to maintain their marginalization. This research explores the content of visual media, specifically popular film, to understand an important source of images upon which public perceptions and cultural knowledge of the sex trade are shaped. Employing qualitative analysis of film content, we investigate configurations of the sex trade in popular film (those grossing over 100 million) from the last 25 years. We critically analyze how film narratives and representations may impact public perceptions and the proliferation of damaging stereotypes of individuals in the sex trade, thereby buttressing institutional disenfranchisement and lack of social support. Our analysis focuses on the roles of three agents within the sex trade: sellers, buyers, and pimps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
