Background: Previous research has identified some tensions that public organizations may encounter during crises. However, there remains a scarcity of research examining how public health care organizations effectively navigate these tensions to reconcile the diverse interests, needs, and demands from various stakeholders. Purposes: The study seeks to shed light on the dynamics underlying the tensions experienced by public hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic. It illustrates how different hospitals' actors have navigated these tensions, identifying solutions and approaches that fostered collaborative endeavors among internal and external stakeholders. Methodology: The study draws on qualitative analyses of 49 semistructured interviews and the notes from two focus groups involving key informants at one of the largest university hospitals in Italy. We also rely on the verbatim transcripts from meetings involving the members of the temporary emergency team constituting the taskforce. Findings: The results highlight the tensions that emerged throughout the different waves of the COVID-19 pandemic and how various actors have managed them in a way to reconcile opposing forces while unleashing adaptability and creativity. Practice Implications: Hospital managers would benefit from developing a paradoxical mindset for crisis preparedness, allowing them to embrace existing tensions and devise creative solutions to favor resilience and change. This review focuses on Part 1 of the new Routledge Handbook to Sociology of Music Education, titled "Post-structuralism, Globalization, Internationalization, and Post-colonialism." Framed by Hildegard Froehlich's (2006) call for music education scholarship to "prob[e] the nature of power relationships and the paradoxes that form them" (6), we discuss not only the contexts and arguments revealed by the authors in Part I, but also consider how "power relations" and "paradoxes" might get in the way of meeting social justice goals--for the chapters in this section of the Handbook and for other authors with similar interests. The skill-attracting policies encouraging the internationalisation of higher education are compatible with a modernisation discourse, at the heart of which lies a belief that international researchers are highly embedded super-achievers allured by targeted policies. By focusing on the life stories of foreign-born scholars working in Poland (100 in-depth interviews), and Polish department heads (20 interviews) this article revealed three paradoxes that should never have come to be according to the Western modernisation paradigm. The first paradox is related to the expectation that policies targeted at incoming scholars should be the first and foremost enticement for international scholars. The second paradox stems from the fact that some internationally mobile academics representing the humanities and social sciences—in their biographical narratives—highly criticise current academic policies focused on internationalisation. The third paradox is related to the fact that, counterintuitively, less embedded academic migrants perform better. This is an outcome of the life strategy of top-performing scholars, who decide to work in Poland only upon receiving a prestigious and temporary, often EU-funded, scholarship (e.g., Marie Curie). Building on the empirical material from Poland, this article introduces a new notion—the 'internationalisation against the grain' to embrace the paradoxes of internationalisation from many peripheral countries. In order to contextualize the stakes of some of the most venerable philosophical conundrums, it is expedient to remember Whitehead's own adventures of ideas. Five steps are important to do understand why is Whitehead the post-modern Plato: (i) how does he differentiate metaphysics and cosmology? (ii) what does "onto-logic" involve? (iii) why should we articulate the coherence and applicability of any philosophical system? (iv) what are, in a nutshell, the specificities of Whitehead's ontology? (v) how does radical empiricism provide elements of solution to contradictions and paradoxes? In this paper we present two new approaches for dealing with semantic paradoxes and soritical predicates based on fuzzy logic. A rapid pace of globalization and a magnitude of change in all aspects of our contemporary reality have brought about numerous paradoxes in academic research and practice. Many of these paradoxes are either not acknowledged or they are approached with traditional binary models that imply eliminating or suppressing one pole of a paradox in favor of another. Furthermore, studies adopting a paradox perspective are scarce and lack empirical evidence and conceptual coherence. We look at several longstanding paradoxes in research and practice as well as traditional methods used to tackle them and suggest benefits of a paradox perspective to gain a better understanding of the challenges we face in research and practice. While there is a voluminous literature on the fear of crime, it is marred by significant gaps. Particularly, while anxiety has been acknowledged as important to understanding fear (of crime), the failure to explicate and adequately theorize anxiety has impoverished intellectual inquiry. This article addresses this issue by theorizing anxiety in great detail. To this end, Martin Heidegger's insightful analysis of fear and anxiety is introduced and discussed. The article draws on the paradoxes of anxiety "developed" by Heidegger to address the purported risk-fear paradox that has dominated fear of crime research and explicates why this paradox is more apparent than real. This paper reviews progress in the field of urban tourism, revisiting and challenging the validity of the paradoxes presented in the paper by Ashworth and Page (2011). To do this, the paper examines the expansion of research endeavours in urban tourism in relation to these paradoxes, including the outputs in dedicated journals on city tourism along with the wider range of outputs generated since 2011 in social science. It also revisits the initial proposition set out regarding an imbalance in attention in urban tourism research (Ashworth 1989, 2003) and how this has been addressed through a broader development of thinking at the intersection of urbanism and tourism. It is a selective review of progress in the field, highlighting the challenges of deriving theory from western modes of analysis that need re-thinking in relation to the global south, notably Africa as well as developments in Asia and the Middle East. Jamie Tappenden was one of the first authors to entertain the possibility of a common treatment for the Liar and the Sorites paradoxes. In order to deal with these two paradoxes he proposed using the Strong Kleene semantic scheme. This strategy left unexplained our tendency to regard as true certain sentences which, according to this semantic scheme, should lack truth value. Tappenden tried to solve this problem by using a new speech act, articulation. Unlike assertion, which implies truth, articulation only implies non-falsity. • A portfolio perspective is needed when managing multiple business models due to their interdependencies and can be used as a strategic tool. • Business model portfolios can be deployed with different strategic intents: diversifying, sensing, and complementing. • The management of business model portfolios needs to consider value opportunities as well as paradoxes across the business model dimensions. • Digital technology and data can enable and support business model portfolio management but also come with related paradoxes. • A holistic perspective on business model portfolio management considers the relationship of strategic intent with opportunities and paradoxes within a strategic context. The number of organisations that operate multiple business models continues to increase. However, operating multiple business models can be complex, as they often need to be harmonised within a broader portfolio due to their interdependencies. This complexity is exacerbated by the increasing role of digital technology and data – enabling new opportunities but also coming with related paradoxes. This paper examines the growing body of literature on business model portfolios revealing that they are evolving into a strategic tool for value creation and business performance. While there are concomitant value opportunities arising from complementarities and synergies, there are also paradoxes emerging from tensions that need to be considered. Employing a developmental literature review, we present a synthesis of recent empirical case studies to gain insight into the management of business model portfolios. Firstly, we identify different strategic intents: diversifying, sensing, and complementing. Secondly, we distil different themes for value opportunities and paradoxes and categorise them according to a business model framework. Thirdly, we identify and discuss the role of digital technologies and data for business model portfolios. Overall, we contribute to an emerging stream of studies on multiple business models in relation to strategy, innovation and technology. By adopting a holistic perspective on the management of business model portfolios, we explore strategic intent, value opportunities and paradoxes, and discuss how portfolios can play a role in strategic management and planning. To survive in today's increasingly complex business environments, firms must embrace strategic paradoxes: contradictory yet interrelated objectives that persist over time. This can be one of toughest of all leadership challenges, as managers must accept inconsistency and contradictions. In this article, we develop and empirically test a set of hypotheses related to ambidexterity, a key example of a paradoxical strategy. Through our analysis of data from a survey of executive leaders, we find a link between organizational ambidexterity and strategic planning, suggesting that the complexities of navigating in explorative ventures require more explicit strategy work than the old certainties of a legacy business. We identify and discuss inherent paradoxes and their implications for firm performance in 22 industry-specific strategies, where empirical industry data shows a pattern of conflict between explorative growth strategies and exploitative profit strategies. African cities are growing rapidly both demographically and physically. It is estimated by 2050 the population of African cities will triple from 410 million in 2010 to 1.23 billion. The ensuing travel demand is expected to aggravate chaos in transport systems for almost all major African cities. This paper analyses the emerging paradoxes in the BRT system in Dar as Salaam city where the provision of an organized, affordable and cost-effective public transport system has been eagerly awaited by city residents. However, the Dar Rapid Transit (DART) system, recently established, has astonishingly witnessed opposition from some of the city residents. Findings reveal that the underlying reasons for this paradoxical situation include absence of a current land use plan, ineffective land use control and little adherence to the legal provision for property compensation and resettlement. Lack of common understanding between the government and the affected people, deters the implementation of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system in the city. A well organised and inclusive framework of stakeholders and a well structured information dissemination system are the pillars on which successful MRT system can be built. This article introduces a deontic logic which aims to model the Canadian legal discourse. Category theory is assumed as a foundational framework for logic. A deontic deductive system DDS is defined as two fibrations: the logic for unconditional obligations OL is defined within a Cartesian closed category on the grounds of an intuitionistic propositional action logic PAL and an action logic AL , while a logic for conditional normative reasoning CNR is defined as a symmetric closed monoidal category. A typed syntax and typed arrows are used to define properly DDS . We show how it can solve the paradoxes of deontic logic and we provide some examples of application to legal reasoning. This article is an investigation of Derrida?s deconstructive strategies on Yazmina's Reza's Art in which concepts such as floating signifier, différance, paradoxes, and decentralization have been applied. Here the question of aesthetic values of modern abstract art is raised. Reza confronts us with a miscommunication as a shortcoming of the language and therefore a rift in a longstanding friendship. The play is about a white painting, but each character in the play observes the painting in a different color. It seems that the color acts as a sign which is caught up in a chain of signifiers that never rest on a definite signified. In addition, the painting which is the centre of the play is decentred and replaced by one of the characters of the play. We present a semi-formal foundational theory of sorts, akin to sets, named librationism because of its way of dealing with paradoxes. Its semantics is related to Herzberger's semi inductive approach, it is negation complete and free variables (noemata) name sorts. Librationism deals with paradoxes in a novel way related to paraconsistent dialetheic approaches, but we think of it as bialethic and parasistent. Classical logical theorems are retained, and none contradicted. Novel inferential principles make recourse to theoremhood and failure of theoremhood. Identity is introduced à la Leibniz-Russell, and librationism is highly non-extensional. Π11- comprehension with ordinary Bar-Induction is accounted for (to be lifted). There is currently a gap between the work of academics and that of human resource (HR) practitioners. This is due to specific paradoxes inherent to the field. Within this paradoxical context, the article reflects on a future framework for public sector human resource management (PSHRM) thought and practice. Academics are predominantly preoccupied with the relatively unpredictable process of exploring and questioning. One assumes that academics seek one universal truth, namely an integrated, structured knowledge base, as opposed to a situation where there are disconnected facts and ideas. Practitioners find themselves identifying (and trying to rectify) workplace problems in order to improve conditions for all employees, and to enhance the performance of public sector institutions. This depiction of the respective roles of academics and practitioners creates the potential for conflict, thereby complicating the HR component. The aim of this paper is twofold: First, we present and develop a system of logic for pragmatics including the act of denial . Second, we analyse in our framework the so-called paradox of assertability. We show that it is possible to yield sentences that are not assertable. Moreover, under certain conditions, a symmetric result can be obtained: There is a specular paradox of deniability. We suggest that whilst design researchers have been probing design, it is highly likely design might never have been where they were looking. Consequently, this paper presents a 6 point manifesto for design research where the emphasis is on acknowledging our material and energy flows and their environmental impact, a more critical stance in design culture that will reveal contradictions, rock the boat, critique ‘what is’ to ‘what could be’, and contest the legitimisation of power. Moreover, design must strive to maintain care for details and quality of public service in everything we do whilst having a concern for otherness and visuality, which privileges thinking in terms of images over numbers and texts, and an interest in theory.
