Non-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with a diameter of 913 nm were electrochemically deposited on an ITO electrode, and poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT) was spin-coated on the AuNP-deposited electrode. The degree of photocurrent enhancement exceeded unity when the coverages of AuNPs were below 14%, but were lower above 14%. The plasmonic effect was verified to be the major contribution at lower coverages, while the quenching effects became predominant at higher coverages. The spatial optimization (1-2 nm) between AuNP and P3HT was crucial and has been successful at 18%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Near field properties of two types of metallic cavities with atomic sharpness were calculated. • The considered tip-substrate model shows better performance for field enhancement and emission enhancements. • The nanoparticle-on-mirror structure can lead to more localized plasmon electric field near the nanoparticle. Using finite element calculations, we investigated the near field properties of two types of commonly used metal nanostructures (a tip-substrate model representing a scanning tunneling microscope type setup (TS) and a nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) configuration) with atomic sharpness and extreme focusing capabilities. The spatial confinement and electric field enhancement of the local field as well as the fluorescence quantum efficiency of a model molecule (as represented by an oscillating dipole) in the cavity region of the two models were systematically studied. It was found that the TS model tends to support higher local electric field enhancement while the NPoM model can provide a more localized plasmon electric field near the nanoparticle. Calculations with the radiating model molecule indicate that both TS and NPoM can cause significant enhancements to the non-radiative decay rates at the order of 106 in the wavelength range of 500–1000 nm. The TS model shows better performance for the radiative enhancements and the resulting emission quantum yield. These results are not only helpful to improve the understanding of such important nanocavities but also supply a reference for their further applications in different areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The electron density on the catalyst surface has a great influence on the multi-electron transport process of photocatalytic reduction of CO 2. In this work, hierarchical Cu 2 O/Ni-MOF composite photocatalyst with local surface plasmon resonance (SPR) properties was prepared by simple hydrothermal and water bath methods. Through DRS, XPS and AES tests found that the SPR of Cu0 expanded the light absorption, provided hot electrons for the reaction system, and greatly improved the photocatalytic activity in coordination with the hierarchical structure and heterostructure. In the absence of sacrificial agent, the CO yield of 30%-Cu 2 O/Ni-MOF was 4.1 times of Cu 2 O (5.32 μmol/g) and 11.1 times of Ni-MOF (1.95 μmol/g), respectively. Then, the possible photocatalytic reaction path was simply speculated based on in-situ FT-IR. In conclusion, the hierarchical structure, heterostructure and SPR effect accelerate the kinetics of Cu 2 O/Ni-MOF photocatalytic reaction, thus improving its photocatalytic activity. This paper describes the enhanced efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) incorporating Au nanoparticle–embedded single-crystalline ZnO nanowire (Au NPs@ZnO NW) arrays. We fabricated these Au NPs@ZnO NW arrays through sequential hydrothermal ZnO growth, with the Au NPs deposited in between the two ZnO growth processes. Interestingly, despite the presence of embedded Au NPs, the ZnO NWs exhibited continuously matched periodic atomic arrangements across the ZnO NW core and shells, indicating that they were single-crystalline. The surface plasmon resonance peaks of the Au NPs on the ZnO NW arrays and of the Au NPs@ZnO NW arrays appeared near 526 and 574 nm, respectively; the red-shift of the latter signal confirmed the embedded geometry of the Au NPs in the ZnO NW arrays. Photovoltaic measurements of the Au NPs@ZnO NW DSSCs revealed enhancements in efficiency that depended on the lengths of the ZnO NWs in the arrays; these efficiencies were all greater than those of corresponding ZnO NW–only DSSCs by at least 20%. In accordance with the geometry of our devices and the improved dye absorption within them, it appears that the near-field localized surface plasmon of the Au NPs in the ZnO NWs was the principal factor governing the enhanced power conversion efficiency. • We decomposed total extinction spectra of nanoparticles into either electromagnetic multipole modes or natural quasi-normal modes. • The multipole components of thin nanoparticles are quite different from qualitative assignments of resonance peaks reported in the literature. • We examined the scope of application of the electromagnetic multipole method, and pointed out the necessity of employing eigenmode-based approaches when interpreting plasmonic spectra. The electromagnetic multipole method has been extensively adopted for a better understanding of the physical mechanism of localized surface plasmon. In this work, we quantitatively decomposed the total extinction spectra of typical silver nanoparticles into multipole components, which are shown to be quite different from qualitative assignment of resonance peaks reported previously. Taking the quasi-normal mode method as reference standard, we examined the scope of application of the electromagnetic multipole method in assigning plasmonic resonance peaks, and pointed out the necessity of employing eigenmode-based approaches when interpreting plasmonic spectra, which can hopefully lead to more physical insights into the underlying mechanisms of plasmonics phenomena. Abstract: We report photoluminescence (PL) and Raman scattering (RS) spectra in Au/spacer/CdSe-nanoparticle multilayers as a function of the distance between the Au film and the CdSe-nanoparticle monolayer. Both the PL and RS intensities were enhanced when the Au-CdSe distance was large and decreased with a decrease in distance. In this work, a 3-layer cross copper grating structure, which is the basic structure in semiconductor processing technology, is simulated by the rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) and the finite element method (FEM). The reflection spectrum shows a reflection dip in the infrared frequencies. The electric field distributions indicate that the dip is caused by the 1st order bonding localized surface plasmon mode excited in the 2nd Cu gratings. Such mode is excited by the part of incident light which evanescently passes through the 1st Cu gratings. Another anti-bonding mode can be observed in the visible light frequencies. As the plasmons excited in the 2nd Cu gratings are screened by the 1st and 3rd Cu gratings, they are very sensitive to the change in the dielectric environment between the 1st and 3rd Cu gratings. Therefore, the plasmonic resonance peaks in the reflection spectrum can be useful for the Optical Critical Dimension (OCD) metrology because the depth and the frequency of the resonance peak are highly sensitive to the structural parameters. • A 3-layer cross copper grating structure is simulated by the rigorous coupled wave analysis and the finite element method. • 1st order bonding and anti-bonding localized surface plasmon resonances in the 2nd metallic gratings are excited. • The plasmon resonances will cause dips in the reflection spectrum and increase the parameter sensitivity. • Structural parameters can be measured by studying the reflection spectrum.
