Henry Glassie's Passing the Time in Ballymenone – Culture and History of an Ulster Community (1982) is a touchstone text in anthropological, folklore, material culture, and ethnographic scholarship in Irish Studies and beyond. In spite of its numerous references to agriculture, cooking, and eating, it remains underexplored with respect to its capture of aspects of twentieth century foodways on the island of Ireland. »Selbstoptimierung und das technologisch vermittelte Selbst: Über die Ausbalancierung von Selbstfürsorge und Selbstbeherrschung«. This paper presents an analysis of technologically mediated self-relations that materialise in the use of self-tracking (ST) devices and data to monitor and track one's bodily, emotional, habitual, or productivity-related aspects. Based on ethnographical research and postphenomenological framing, two analytical concepts are employed: self-care and self-control. While seemingly opposed, both simultaneously appear and co-exist in ST practices that transcend mere self-optimisation. The dialectic interplay between self-control and self-care provides uncertainty-reducing confirmation of prior hunches, emotionally relieving reminders and algorithmic recommendations, detailed data that might be helpful in the future for pattern recognition or treatments, and an orientation that offers safety with regard to current and future decisions. Self-tracking technologies can be seen as assisting selfand life-regulation that can ultimately support personal balance and harmony. The article contributes theoretically to ST literature by extending the concept of self-optimisation to include the balancing of needs and desires between self-responsibility and gratification, goal-tracking and self-affirmation, discipline and letting go. In Chile, social policies are founded on the notion of women as primary caregivers burdened with the main responsibility for others. These policies conceptualise women as deficient, requiring their parenting to be monitored. Drawing from our ethnographic studies of specific instances of encounters with the state, this article examines how low-income mothers navigate, experience and are subjected to silence and silencing. Silences are at the basis of their relationship with a state that provides minimal, almost imperceptible care, compelling these women to manage their silence to obtain even the slightest assistance. In 2015, following the closure of Judicial Psychiatric Hospitals, the Italian NHS launched new forensic facilities: the Residences for the Execution of Security Measures (REMS). Inside REMSs, healthcare professionals work to rehabilitate individuals who have committed crimes and who have been judged both socially dangerous and mentally ill. Based on an ethnographic project within a REMS in Northern Italy, this contribution explores how healthcare workers balance their care role with the demands for social control imposed by the institution. The findings reveal that staff members often navigate conflicting roles, sometimes employing informal resistance strategies against institutional demands that conflict with their professional ethics: in this way they are able to negotiate their identity and agency in a highly controlled environment, particularly when managing sensitive issues like patients’ sexuality. The study looks at the heterogeneity of olive production in Palestine and challenges the idea of one single taste that can be attributed to Palestinian oil. Using an ethnographic method and years of research as the backdrop, this article asks, “What is the taste of the homeland and how might it have changed?” Along the way, the question transforms and wonders, “Can we taste the homeland in an oil not made in Palestine.” Taking two distinct foodways for olive oil, this article tours the sensual landscape of tastes that constitute home for many Palestinians. Mattering as a central part of well-being has not been studied in the context of newly arrived young migrants in Swedish schools. Neither have studies on mattering included material and spatial conditions. This article draws on data collected from ethnographic fieldwork to address this. The theoretical contribution is based on the combination of the concept of mattering with Ahmed's feminist and postcolonial theory of orientation and a critical view of lived experience as social and bodily orientation devices. Combining these theoretical frameworks, we explore social, spatial and material conditions for mattering in newly arrived youths' everyday school lives. The overall outcome of our analysis illustrates that mattering is not only a question of social relations but also related to spatial and material dimensions. A conclusion is that Swedishness as an unspoken norm of whiteness is 'built into the walls' of Swedish schools and that (in)directly discriminates newly arrived young migrants. Epistemic injustice towards Indigenous women is a global reality. In South Africa (SA) and beyond, Black pain is a recognized experience. "Coloured" pain is less familiar terrain since "Coloured" identity is accepted by some South Africans but rejected by others. Racial identities, however, often manifest as a material reality in society, shaping the life possibilities and potentialities of people. "Coloured" women have experienced limited upward mobility in post-Apartheid SA, and experiences of non-belonging accompany "Coloured" consciousness, collectively and individually. Claims attached to Khoi-Coloured heritage are growing more assertive in the current body politic and concentrated in provinces like the Western Cape in SA. Hidden by African patriarchal claims, the voices and politics of women with Khoi lineage are once again hidden in post-Apartheid SA. Many different stigmas are attached to such women, stigmas that are insufficiently explored and deconstructed in scholarly work. How much of this Khoi-Coloured condition entails a peculiar experience of pain and deprivation? How do we access Khoi (and San) lineage given a fragmented and absent archival political history, and do personal autoethnographies provide a way into a deeper understanding of these socio-cultural identities? This transformative autoethnography focuses on the authors’ learning about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as a result of their participation in university diversity-related book clubs and subsequent extensive dialogue with one another. The paper features three implementation vignettes where the authors engage in critical self-reflection and self-critique as they (re)consider ways to improve their educational practice as it pertains to DEI. Over the years, Nigerian society has the belief that given the potency of kánàkò (collision of time and space) and egbé (teleportation), it can only be applied by men while neglecting the role of women in its application for national safety. The study examines egbé and kánako and implications for community policing and women's involvement in socio-economic sustainability in South West Nigeria. Three research questions were raised and answered to guide this study. The study adopts the qualitative research approach anchored on ethnographic research design. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 36 participants from six (6) communities in Ógun, Oyó, and Osun states. Recordings, observations, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions were used to gather qualitative data. Findings from the study revealed that egbé and kánàkò could be useful for military and paramilitary agencies if appropriately implemented to ensure community policing and national safety, amongst others. The study recommends, amongst others, that the hunters' association and government should properly sensitize women in the hunting profession on their role to enhance the preservation of these traditional means of fortifications and not become weapons that will render these fortifications irrelevant. The aim of this article is to elaborate on the overlooked strategy of historical ethnography. Drawing from the literature and sharing vignettes from my research at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees archive, I advance in two stages. First, by reviewing key works, I provide an overview of historical ethnography, focusing mainly on its distinct characteristics: The historical reach and reliance on a wide range of materials. I also present the inductive-deductive debate to consider the role of theory. Then I provide informed reflections about the different research stages: Before, during, and after leaving the archival field. Becoming immersed in the subject matter prior to the actual empirical examination opens the path to the archives and to a meaningful data collection endeavor. In turn, informed decisions, rather than luck, fuel the ongoing movement between data collection and analysis. Lastly, acknowledging the interpretive mindset involved with thinking ethnographically, I present indexing and temporal coding as helpful strategies for organizing a large corpus of historical data. In this article, we present methods for the use of eye-tracking in interviews in order to reflect on visual perception and practices of looking as part of an ethnography of the senses. The methods are based on two multi-year ethnographic studies involving eye trackers. In the first one, researchers used mobile eye trackers to study how art museum visitors approach digital image technologies. In the other, they relied on stationary eye trackers to investigate practices on digital image platforms. We discuss how video recordings of participants' eye movements were made and describe the process of conducting ethnographic interviews based on the videos. The eye-tracking interviews can be used 1. to make participants aware of and think about practices of looking; 2. to verbalize in dialogue sensory and interpretative processes regarding museum objects and digital image technologies; and 3. to surface individuals' aesthetic preferences and incorporated knowledge. Stories about a submerged land named Lyonesse abound in culture traditions of Southwest Britain and plausibly derive from memories of land loss within the Scilly Isles. We review Lyonesse stories, their links to Arthurian romances and Greek/Roman accounts of the Cassiterides, and trace their divergent evolution. From this region's history of land-sea movements and human occupation, we propose Lyonesse stories originated more than 4000 years ago when rising sea level divided a single inhabited island in the Scilly group. The comparable antiquity of similar stories is a compelling reason for supposing Lyonesse stories originated from observations of submergence encoded in cultural memories through oral traditions that endured in intelligible form for several millennia to reach us today. This article aims to apply critical scrutiny to post-socialist discourse, an ongoing series of debates concerning the relationship between sociocultural anthropology and ethnology in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). To achieve my goal, I single out Petr Skalník’s writings and subject them to twofold scrutiny. In the first part of my article, I offer factual criticism and point out the factual shortcomings of his work. The second part of the article puts the writings under sociological scrutiny, based on what I call a ‘political reading’, and proceeding from the sociology of science of Pierre Bourdieu. This perspective shows how scholars’ concrete utterances in their factual accounts are related to power struggles within the scholarly community. This approach demonstrates how Skalník’s concrete factual misrepresentations intrinsically relate to his objective of establishing sociocultural anthropology in post-socialist Czechia and the associated struggles between Czech anthropologists and ethnologists. The present analysis, by extension, allows us to better understand the post-socialist transformation of CEE academia and casts doubt on the veracity of post-socialist discourse itself. University Faculty and administrators often find themselves in a battle of us versus them. Thinking more specifically about faculty's relationship with professional administrators, we use duoethnography to explore the experiences of a faculty member who once worked as an administrator and a professional administrator who is currently a doctoral student. As we explored our experiences of the faculty-administrator divide, we delved deeper into neoliberalism's role in today's universities. Inviting the reader to examine their understanding of neoliberalism in the university, we contemplate "What is a university?" This paper deals with the role of taboos and avoidance rituals as a means of psycho-cultural adaptation to taking personal risks among illicit antiquity looters in the Black Sea region of Turkey. My ethnographic fieldwork showed that antiquity looters indeed cared more about the possibility of being crushed by spiritual creatures than of being caught by law enforcement. Spiritual creatures, namely jinn, are the most unpredictable threats imagined by illicit antiquity looters. They force looters to perform rituals to mitigate the perceived danger, including temporary or permanent loss of sanity, loss of limb, or loss of life. The paper concludes that looters' avoidance rituals play a functional role rather than a rational one, and they are performed to show that looters are willing to get along with a spiritual environment beyond their control. This article introduces the Latter-day Saint "legend of the naked dead," which in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was a widely known story emphasizing the importance of proper burial, including the ritual clothing of the dead. The ceremonial robes and garments that Latter-day Saints wear in temple services are also worn in the grave. In these stories, apparitions appear to the living to coax them to fix some error in their burial clothing. The legend cycle emphasizes the place of the family in caring for their dead, the significance of these rituals, and, of course, the continuing connections between the living and the dead, while simultaneously reinforcing the expectation for Latter-day Saints to always wear the garment under their secular clothing. Historically, some have viewed the practice of wearing the garment as onerous and altered their garments for purposes of comfort or fashion. This article compares songs in the bumba-meu-boi of Maranhão, Brazil, to reframe discussions of sotaque ("performance styles"). Songs structure performances and have a high symbolic value. Woody Guthrie built a strong reputation after 1942 as an artist and activist opposed to racism. From that time, he had a consistent ideology that promoted racial justice and economic equality for all. This essay examines pivotal earlier events when he was effectively confronted by two Black people for singing racist lyrics on the radio in 1937 and 1939 and also examines the roles of the "long Civil Rights Movement," the Communist Party USA, and the Black press in aiding Guthrie's development of a new racial consciousness. Sex-gender-diverse and non-monogamous strain cisnormativity and mononormativity. In scientific terms, the parenting arrangements of these people are uncertain. Thus, this ethnography aims to understand the perception of non-monogamous sex-gender-diverse people about parenting. The theoretical framework adopted is derived from non-monogamous studies, love and sexuality from the Social and Human Sciences in Public Health and the digital ethnography methodological framework. Fieldwork occurred from 2021 to 2022 through an online WhatsApp group. Participant observation was employed in the group, and semi-structured online interviews were held. Two categories emerged: a) The non-monogamous parenting nodes and b) Collective parenting. In the first, the importance of bonds in affective networks is explored, and the barriers to these family arrangements are exposed. The second describes the importance of living in a community, and Indigenous and Black ancestry is revived. The revived ancestry and ways of living in a community gain importance as we understand their relevance in the experience of parenting for sex-gender-diverse people who are non-monogamous. This book stands out as a scholarly testimony to the disappearing craft of traditional pottery making by Palestinian women and men potters. The material it assembles, both textual and pictorial, is based on field research completed in the 1970s by two very different, yet complementary, researchers and authors. For various reasons, this material lay dormant over four decades until it was retrieved and returned to the light of day. The publication of this book followed the death of one of the authors, John Landgraf in 2017 in the U.S. Fortunately, his co-author, Owen Rye in Australia, still had most of the written material in his possession, which was then digitized, arranged, and edited. The graphic material, especially the black and white and beautiful color photographs, taken by the authors, was also gathered and cataloged for reproduction in the book, with outstanding results. The volume invites readers into the two distinct worlds of Palestinian women and men potters at work in the 1970s: the women in their village homes, and the men in their mostly urban workshops. With Palestinian culture under siege, the study presented here aims to record and preserve a key part of that culture. It also memorializes the life and work of John Landgraf, who lived in Jerusalem from 1965 to 1980, and dedicated himself to archaeology, ethnography, and social work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

"Institutional Ethnography as Writing Studies Practice" is a book that explores the concept of institutional ethnography (IE) as a tool for self-reflection and understanding within academic institutions. The book is a compilation of chapters written by various authors who work in writing programs and centers. It focuses on the perspectives of directors of tutoring, writing, and student centers, who navigate the challenges of balancing administrative expectations and the day-to-day work of their centers. The book encourages readers to consider their own institutions and offers insights and conceptual tools for meaningful change. The Sprach- und Sachatlas Italiens und der Südschweiz (AIS) ("Linguistic and Ethnographie Atlas of Italy and Southern Switzerland"), directed by the Swiss Romanists Karl Jaberg and Jakob Jud, can be considered the first systematic atlas of Italian dialects and continues to be regarded as a cornerstone of linguistic geography. This essay examines the monumental project, focusing on the work of its principal investigator, Paul Scheuermeier, who carried out most of the surveys in Italy and southern Switzerland during the period of data collection, which lasted from 1919 to 1928. Through meticulous analysis of AIS correspondence and archival material, Scheuermeier's fieldwork methods are examined, providing insights into the methodological foundations of the project. Drawing on the theoretical principles of linguistic geography, influenced by Jules Gilliéron and the innovations of Jaberg and Jud, Scheuermeier's approach reflects a blend of personal insight and contemporary methodology. The essay also considers the historical, political, and cultural contexts that shaped Scheuermeier's work, including the challenges posed by the rise of fascism in Italy. Drawing on Scheuermeier's correspondence with Jaberg and other archival materials, the essay aims to contextualise his contributions within the intellectual and socio-political milieu of the time, shedding light on the methodological advances and challenges encountered during the creation of the AIS. In 1842, the National Institute for the Promotion of Science installed an eclectic collection of natural science and cultural treasures in the United States Patent Office, a fire-proof building in Washington D.C. Inventories, institutional records, and periodicals indicate that the initial curator of the National Institute, the natural scientist Charles Pickering, arranged display cases at the U.S.'s first national museum according to his ethnographic division of racial types. Pickering's system remained mostly intact until the galleries closed at the onset of the Civil War. As pro-slavery violence grew increasingly intense, the government-sponsored National Institute presented a narrative of progress that was embroiled in racial politics. The violent context that surrounded prominent objects in federal collections, such as the Declaration of Independence and Charles Willson Peale's George Washington at Princeton (1779), should be remembered as a significant moment in museum and U.S. history as well as a potential measure of change since the antebellum installation. Dullness is a quality that is hard to pin down for a woodworker; it defies easy definitions, and yet has the power to radically change the temper of experience. Using methods of self-observation drawn from sensory ethnography, I describe how I encounter dullness in my own skilled craft practice. I capture the intersensory nature of perception, how dullness is known through touch, sight, and sound. I follow traces of dullness on the wood I carve, in my body, and along the edge of my tool. This sensory portrait of dullness as elusive, relational, and shifting is a textured and nuanced account of how a craftsperson knows what they need to know from the body and experience. In the analysis section, I draw on Maurice Merleau-Ponty's theory of the inexhaustibility of perception to enhance my claim that dullness is not a fixed object, but a state filled with ambiguity. Perception does not give us easy answers. The article counters popular renderings of craft as practical or technical know-how with a contrary theory of craft as filled with poetic ambiguity. This essay illustrates my pedagogical approach on the MA in Critical Craft Studies (MACR) and explains some of the philosophical commitments that underpinned my teaching there. Working as Core Faculty on the program for three years, I regularly led students through embodied ethnographic trials as a way to help them tune their attention to the kind of everyday understanding so often overlooked in academic research. In addition to being the kind of understanding usually expressed in craftwork, this bodily perceptual engagement is – I argue here – our most basic and fundamental way of knowing. Large number of people from villages in the India–Bangladesh borderlands are migrants to Indian cities, particularly to the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi. Migration from Cooch Behar, an industrially backward district in the northern part of the state of West Bengal in India sharing border with Bangladesh and the Indian state of Assam, has been a regular practice as subsistence agriculture fail to provide the landless agricultural labourers continuous employment and competitive wages. This paper is based on ethnographic study in Delhi NCR and the former 'Chhit Mahals' (as the former border enclaves of Bangladesh and India were called in Bengali) in Cooch Behar district, in the period immediately following their exchange, of historically marginal migrant households whose members work in the construction industry. With the implementation of the 1974 Land Boundary Agreement between India and Bangladesh and the finalisation of the India-Bangladesh land boundary, the former Chhit Mahals, that is border enclaves of Bangladesh and India, were exchanged between the two states in August 2015. The former Bangladeshi Chhit Mahals in Cooch Behar are now Indian villages, whose residents had opted for Indian citizenship. This paper explores migration from these former Chhit Mahals with a relational political economy perspective. It analyses both broader socio-cultural, economic, and political processes and interests and the migrants' own feelings which interact with migration to demonstrate how the migrant's labour value is determined at the intersection of identity, affect and the international border, with marginalisation of the migrants from the India–Bangladesh borderlands emerging as a product of layered struggles and a dynamic of continuous cultural reconstruction. In this paper, we consider multiple sites of disenchantment and re-enchantment in assessment practice through the use of dialogue, reflection and speculative writing. We contend that this reflexive speculative approach enables us to dream first and negotiate later our future assessment practices. We argue that assessment systems in teacher education are part of a plantation infrastructure and discuss the many ways in which current standards of assessment in teacher education are disenchanting. These disenchantments lay the groundwork for the use of a speculative approach in provoking more positively daring imaginations for assessment. This article stems from interviews conducted with Chinese women residing in Lisbon, aged 18-34, during the initial phase of fieldwork (2021/2022). As an outcome of my Anthropology Ph.D. project, the focus here is on comprehending the perception of Asian women within the realm of everyday life as fetishized entities and how they persist in (re)shaping their identities. By primarily examining visual “yellow fever” depictions (in Hollywood cinema through films like “The World of Suzie Wong”, “Madame Butterfly”, “Miss Saigon”, and the “Year of the Dragon”, along with interracial Pornography), I endeavor to delve into the impact of “race”, “sexual fetishization”, and the ubiquitous propagation of stereotypical imagery on the lives of the individuals I engage with. Based on the ethnographic work I conducted with a group of Brazilian travesti sex workers in Rio de Janeiro and Barcelona, this article aims to analyze how they adopt technologies to transform and beautify their bodies that question the biomedical model of our society: their bodies are not read as “docile”, “healthy”, or “productive” since they do not “fit into”, nor pretend to fit into the dominant sexual binary. On the other hand, beauty – as a political and transformative field – is one of the main elements that travestis have to find their place in the world through their (trans)national displacements: they are self-constructing as social subjects who claim some intelligibility while they become beautiful travestis. Therefore, travestis believe that beauty is a (transitory) space of liberation that, ultimately, reveals how certain biopolitical technologies have failed to produce undisciplined bodies and beautiful travestis who – through their survival – rebel against a heteronormative power that considers that their bodies are not worthy of mourning and, consequently, “deserve to die”.
