Congenital epulis is a rare and benign newborn tumor. There are some papers on this entity; however, very few reports focus on its macroscopic view. We present a newborn girl with multiple congenital epulis of the mandibular and maxillary alveolar ridges who underwent a successful surgical intervention in a resource-limited setting. Congenital epulis is frequently diagnosed by histopathological examination, although sonography could be helpful before birth. Despite the benign nature of the disease, immediate intervention is often required as it can prevent feeding and cause asphyxia in neonates. Surgical excision is the standard treatment. Congenital epulis can be identified clinically shortly after birth. They cause a substantial surgical challenge due to multiple or large lesions and problems with breathing and feeding. Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of the Nd:YAG laser therapy in the management of oral mucosal lesions. This retrospective study concerns several clinical cases. Materials and Methods: 130 patients with a variety of benign oral soft tissue lesions were treated with laser excision and ablation. Surgery was performed on all patients with a pulsed, fiberoptically delivered Nd:YAG contact laser (Smarty-10). The most frequent lesions excised or vaporized and biopsied were fibroma (27), epulis (16), leukoplakia (13), lichen planus (13), hemangioma (5), mucocele (13), fiber-mucosa hyperplasia (13), and squamous papilloma (10). All patients were included in a postoperative follow-up program for up to 24 months (range 6 to 24 months). Results: In most cases, Nd:YAG laser therapy led to complete resolution of the lesion. No negative effects were reported during or after this type of laser surgery. Especially for oral mucosal white lesions, this treatment obtained resolution or real control regarding their symptoms and growth. Conclusion: Based on our results and the international literature, Nd:YAG laser therapy can be considered as effective as traditional surgical techniques in the treatment of benign oral mucosal lesions. Moreover, in addition to its therapeutic excellence, this laser method possesses the great advantage of being much more comfortable (no postoperative problems or pain, no need of sutures, often no need for local anesthesia). Reports of neoplasia in captive reptiles are becoming more frequent; however, there is still scarce knowledge of the occurrence of neoplasia in wild reptiles. A wild black rat snake (Pantherophis alleghaniensis) was presented to the Zoological Medicine service of the University of Georgia’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital with a 3 cm in diameter solid mandibular mass that was partially ulcerated. Radiographically, the mass was radiopaque with small bone spicules and partial osteolysis of the adjacent mandible. Histologic examination of the mass revealed a neoplasm composed of cuboidal to polygonal cells arranged in islands, anastomosing cords, and trabeculae of pseudostratified epithelium with a palisading peripheral layer of densely packed columnar cells with cytoplasmic clearing. The neoplastic tissue was separated from the mesenchyme by a prominent band of fine collagen. Neoplastic cells were positive for cytokeratin and negative for smooth muscle actin. Electron microscopy highlighted the presence of tonofilaments and microvilli. These findings led to the diagnosis of ameloblastoma, an odontogenic epithelial tumor known to occur in humans and most veterinary species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study which describes the cytological and histopathplogical diagnosis in dogs' oral epithelial and mesenchymal tumours. Methods and techniques used in the study such as Leishman-Giemsa (LG) and Harris haematoxylin and eosin staining techniques were cited. Results observed the gradual increase in incidence of neoplasms with advancement of age and reported acanthomatous epulides, fibromatous epulides and rare osseous epulis.

Abstract: This report presents a case of maxillary osteosarcoma that was initially considered to be granulomatous epulis. A pedunculated mass was found on the buccal gingiva in the right maxillary molar region in a 45-year-old male patient at the initial examination. The clinical and pathological findings indicated that the mass was an epulis. However, a partial maxillectomy was performed under general anesthesia because the rapidly enlarged mass was clinically diagnosed as a maxillary tumor. A pathological examination of the resected specimen revealed that the maxillary tumor was osteosarcoma with a partially positive surgical stump. A total resection of the maxilla was performed under general anesthesia because recurrence was observed at 3 years postoperatively. Recurrence of a tumor that invaded into the cranial base was found at 2.5 years after reoperation despite three courses of adjuvant chemotherapy. Heavy particle radiotherapy was administered. Unfortunately, the patient died at 6 years and 2 months after the first operation due to tumor growth and a gradual worsening of his general condition. The experience from the present case suggested that an early diagnosis and an appropriate surgical therapy is very important for a satisfactory treatment outcomes of the jawbone osteosarcoma. Abstract: Congenital epulis of the newborn (CEN) is a rare benign lesion that exclusively occurs in the oral and maxillofacial regions of newborns. The clinicopathologic features of CEN were examined and reviewed from the files of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology from 1970 to 2000. Ten cases were included. Patient lesions were all present at birth but were surgically excised between 2 days and 6 weeks (median, 5.5 days). Nine lesions were in females; 1 case did not designate patient sex. Locations included 6 on the maxilla, 2 on the mandible, 1 on the designated maxillary lip, and 1 unknown. The cases included a patient with 2 lesions: 1 on mandibular and 1 on maxillary alveolar ridges, respectively. All other lesions were solitary and polypoid. Microscopically, these were pedunculated and nodular, composed of sheets to grouped clusters of medium-sized, ovoid-to-polygonal cells with abundant granular cytoplasm, distinct cell membranes, vascular-rich stroma, and attenuated overlying mucosa. Two cases also demonstrated spindled cells. The nuclei were vesicular and focally stippled, with distinct and slightly convoluted nuclear membranes; nucleoli were visible but not prominent. Mitotic activity was not observed. The vascular channels ranged from capillary-sized to venous, some staghorn-like with rare perivascular long-term inflammation. The venules exhibited a perivascular pericytic proliferation. Odontogenic epithelial rests were present in 2 cases. No cases demonstrated cytoplasmic hyaline globules. The lesional cells in all cases were negative for S-100 protein, CD68, CD34, CD31, keratins, desmin, calponin, and smooth muscle actin. Perivenular pericytes were positive for smooth muscle actin. Congenital epulis of the newborn is a rare oral entity with characteristic clinicopathologic features. It predominately affects girls, mainly on the maxillary alveolar ridge. It may be separated from “granular cell tumor” by location, patient age, absence of cytoplasmic hyaline globules, solid growth pattern, pericytic proliferation, attenuated overlying epithelium, and negativity for S-100 protein. Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a lesion of the gingival tissues that predominantly affects women and is usually located in the maxilla anterior to the molars. The definitive diagnosis is established by histological examination, which reveals the presence of cellular connective tissue with focal calcifications. Surgery is the treatment of choice, though the recurrence rate can reach 20%. We present a clinical and histological review - including a detailed immunohistochemical analysis - of four cases of POF diagnosed and treated at our hospital. All four patients were women, and two were pregnant. The immunohistochemical study revealed that the proliferating cells showed myofibroblastic characteristics and did not express estrogen or progesterone receptors. The lesions showed clinically benign behavior. Our results indicate that POF should be considered as a myofibroblastic proliferation, and although the clinical characteristics suggest hormonal influence, we were unable to demonstrate the expression of hormone receptors in the proliferating cellular component. Focal gingival enlargements are a diverse group of lesions with almost similar clinical presentation but varied etiology and histopathology. The actual cause of peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) has been debated over many years. POFs are usually seen in childhood and younger ages. There is a slight female predilection. It is usually localized, rarely generalized. Usually, the treatment option is only surgical excision with minimal chances of recurrence. The article presents a case study on two cases of epulis in a German Shepherd cross (Case 1) aged 9 and non-descript dog (Case 2) aged 11 which history of growth in the left mandibular regions, drooling of saliva and halitosis. It discusses radiography performed on dogs, surgical treatment of epulis and recovery and non-recurrence of epulides after one year.

The article discusses findings of a study to investigate the surgical removal of epulis tumor in the left upper gum of a mixed breed male dog. It notes that oral tumor develops in 6 percent of dogs with cases commonly found in breeds like Boxers, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds. It cites that the dog was administered with general anesthesia for excision of the epulis which had a size of 4 centimeters by 3 centimeters.

Background: The fibrous epulis (Ep), a common tumor-like lesion of the gingiva, appears in the interdental papilla as a result of local irritation. Lesions are painless ulcerated and have a variable growth rate. Case presentation: A 52-year-old man was referred for the evaluation of a large painless gingival mass. It had started 2 months back and has been increasing rapidly day by day. According to radiological evaluation no bone involvement was noted. The tumor was totally removed by excision with help of surgical scalpel and electrocautery under general anesthesia with extraction of involving tooth. Finally, the microscopic findings were suggestive of a fibrous Ep. Differential diagnosis, clinical considerations and factors to prevent recurrence are discussed. Abstract: An otherwise-healthy 11-month-old white girl presented with a polyp-like lesion on the anteromedial part of the maxillary alveolar ridge. It looked like a congenital epulis, but histological examination showed fascicles of smooth muscle cells dispersed in collagenous stroma with a few peripheral nerve bundles that were intermingled with smooth muscle fibres. The muscle cells stained strongly for desmin and α-smooth-muscle actin. However, S-100 was found only in peripheral nerve bundles. It was therefore a leiomyomatous hamartoma. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
