BackgroundUS sales of oral nicotine pouches (ONPs) have rapidly increased, with cool/mint-flavoured ONPs the most popular flavour category. Restrictions on sales of flavoured tobacco products have either been implemented or proposed by several US states and localities. Zyn, the most popular ONP brand, is marketing Zyn Chill and Zyn Smooth as ‘Flavour-Ban Approved’ or ‘unflavoured’, probably to evade flavour bans and increase product appeal. At present, it is unclear whether these ONPs are indeed free of flavour additives that can impart pleasant sensations such as cooling.MethodsSensory cooling and irritant activities of ‘Flavour-Ban Approved’ Zyn ONPs, Chill and Smooth, along with minty varieties (Cool Mint, Peppermint, Spearmint, Menthol), were analysed by Ca2+microfluorimetry in HEK293 cells expressing the cold/menthol (TRPM8) or menthol/irritant receptor (TRPA1). Flavour chemical content of these ONPs was analysed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.ResultsZyn Chill ONP extracts robustly activated TRPM8, with much higher efficacy (39%–53%) than the mint-flavoured ONPs. In contrast, mint-flavoured ONP extracts elicited stronger TRPA1 irritant receptor responses than Chill extracts. Chemical analysis demonstrated that Chill exclusively contained WS-3, an odourless synthetic cooling agent, while mint-flavoured ONPs contained WS-3 together with mint flavourants.ConclusionsONP products marketed as ‘Flavour-Ban Approved’ or ‘unflavoured’ contain flavouring agents, proving that the manufacturer’s advertising is misleading. Synthetic coolants such as WS-3 can provide a robust cooling sensation with reduced sensory irritancy, thereby increasing product appeal and use. Regulators need to develop effective strategies for the control of odourless sensory additives used by the industry to bypass flavour bans.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 tackles the long-neglected economic dimension of water utilization by monitoring nations’ water use efficiency (WUE). However, it is imperative to emphasize the need for consistent spatial-temporal subnational WUE estimates, rather than relying solely on recent national trends, which can obscure crucial water use concerns and improvement opportunities. Here, a time series analysis of national, state, and sectoral (e.g., industrial, service, and agriculture) WUE from 1980 to 2015 was developed by compiling the most comprehensive and disaggregated water and economic data from 3243 US counties and 50 US states. The US total WUE increased by 181% from 16.2 (1985) to 45.6 USD/m3(2015), driven by service sector WUE enhancements. The increased industry and service WUEs in most states were more strongly correlated with decreased per capita water withdrawal than with economic growth. Simultaneously, reductions in agriculture WUE were observed in 18 states potentially because of the complicated interaction of diverse factors specific to local communities. Expanding WUE gaps between affluent and less affluent states, and persisting WUE gaps between water-abundant andwater-scarce states highlight the need to advance policies to support under-resourced communities in effective water planning and water pricing for advancing equitable development.

Critical metals are key to lithium-ion batteries (LIB), but metal mining has inflicted many socio-environmental harms. Recovering metals from spent LIBs can partially overcome this challenge, but existing recovery and recycling techniques such as pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy are either energy intensive or require toxic chemicals. Solvometallurgy, using biodegradable deep eutectic solvents (DESs), has emerged as a greener option, but full life cycle sustainability of DESs remains unclear. Here, using an integrated assessment framework we show that, compared with pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy, the weak solubility of metal compounds in hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) and acceptors (HBAs) and their non-recoverability in chemical precipitation routes of the DES approach result in 3.1 times more CO2eq, ∼5 times more ozone depletion, and 6.5–7.3 times higher costs. Although alternative electrodeposition routes can minimize HBA loss and alleviate chemical impacts, high energy consumption associated with HBDs exacerbates global warming potential. In siturepairing/regeneration of crystalline compounds in cathode materials could offer a more sustainable application for DESs.

Adsorption and ion exchange technologies are two of the most widely used approaches to separate pollutants from water; however, their intrinsic diffusion limitations continue to be a challenge. Pore functionalized membranes are a promising technology that can help overcome these challenges, but the extents of their competitive benefits and broad applicability have not been systematically evaluated. Herein, three types of adsorptive/ion exchange (IX) polymers containing strong/weak acid, strong base, and iron-chitosan complex groups were synthesized in the pores and partially on the surface of microfiltration (MF) membranes and tested for the removal of organic and inorganic cations and anions from water, including arsenic, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and calcium (hardness). When directly compared with beads (0.5–6 mm) and crushed resins (0.05 mm), adsorptive/IX pore-functionalized membranes demonstrated an increased relative sorption capacity, up to 2 orders of magnitude faster kinetics and the ability to regenerate up to 70–100% of their capacity while concentrating the initial solution concentration up to 12 times. The simple and versatile synthesis approach used to functionalize membranes, notably independent of the polymer type of the MF membrane, utilized pores throughout the entire cross section of the membrane to immobilize the polymers that contain the functional groups. Utilizing the pore volume of commercial membranes (6–112 mL/m2), the scientific weight capacity of the polymer (3.1–11.5 mequiv/g), and the synthesis conditions (e.g., monomer concentration), the theoretical adsorption/IX capacities per area of the membranes were calculated to be as high as 550 mequiv/m2, substantially higher than the 175 mequiv/m2value needed to compete with commercially available IX resins. This work therefore shows that pore functionalized membranes are a promising path to tackle water contamination challenges, lowering separation diffusion limitations.

Organic capping agents are a ubiquitous and crucial part of preparing reproducible and homogeneous batches of nanomaterials, particularly nanocrystals with well-defined facets. Despite studies reporting surface ligands (e.g., capping agents) having a non-negligible role in catalytic behavior, their impact is less understood in contaminant adsorption, an important consideration given their potential to obfuscate facet-dependent trends in performance. To ascribe observed behaviors to the facet or the ligand, this report evaluates the impact of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP), a commonly utilized capping agent, on the adsorption performance of nanohematite particles of varying prevailing facet in the removal of selenite (Se(IV)) as a model system. The PVP capping agent reduces the available surface area for contaminant binding, thus resulting in a reduction in overall Se(IV) adsorbed. However, accounting for the effects of surface area, {012}-faceted nanohematite demonstrates a significantly higher sorption capacity for Se(IV) compared with that of {001}-faceted nanohematite. Notably, chemical treatment is minimally effective in removing strongly bound PVP, indicating that complete removal of surface ligands remains challenging.

Energy efficient solutions that can effectively regulate the temperature of various systems are crucial across a wide array of applications, spanning from electronic circuits and battery technologies to textiles and biomedical dressings. Phase change materials (PCMs) offer an effective means to tackle pressing energy challenges through their ability to absorb or release significant amounts of so-called 'latent' thermal energy during a change in their physical state. Various techniques have been implemented to solve the fluidity and leakage challenges of PCMs in their melt state, which has proven to be a limiting factor in their application. Electrospinning stands out as an efficient technique for confining PCM into versatile form stable polymeric nanofibers. Despite the prevalence of electrospinning, there is a noticeable limitation in existing literature, particularly in comprehensive reviews focusing on multifunctional electrospun PCM fibers. Therefore, this review seeks to consolidate insights into the advancements associated with the utilization of electrospinning techniques for creating nanofibrous PCM composites. The review provides an overview of electrospinning technology, PCM fiber formation mechanisms, possible additives incorporation for the creation of multifunctionality, and their utilization in personal thermal management, electronics and electromagnetic shiels, as well as medical dressings. It delves into advancements in material selection, fusion enthalpies, and transformation temperatures, offering a comprehensive summary and discussion. The aim is to highlight advances and potentials while also assessing research gaps in electrospun nanofibrous PCMs, thereby offering guidance for new research directions and advancements in this promising area.

Conventional phototrophic cultivation for microalgae production suffers from low and unstable biomass productivity due to limited and unreliable light transmission outdoors. Alternatively, the use of a renewable lignocellulose-derived carbon source, cellulosic hydrolysate, offers a cost-effective and sustainable pathway to cultivate microalgae heterotrophically with high algal growth rate and terminal density. In this study, we evaluate the feasibility of cellulosic hydrolysate-mediated heterotrophic cultivation (Cel-HC) for microalgae production by performing economic and environmental comparisons with phototrophic cultivation through techno-economic analysis and life cycle assessment. We estimate a minimum selling price (MSP) of 4722 USD/t for producing high-purity microalgae through Cel-HC considering annual biomass productivity of 300 t (dry weight), which is competitive with the conventional phototrophic raceway pond system. Revenues from the lignocellulose-derived co-products, xylose and fulvic acid fertilizer, could further reduce the MSP to 2976 USD/t, highlighting the advantages of simultaneously producing high-value products and biofuels in an integrated biorefinery scheme. Further, Cel-HC exhibits lower environmental impacts, such as cumulative energy demand and greenhouse gas emissions, than phototrophic systems, revealing its potential to reduce the carbon intensity of algae-derived commodities. Our results demonstrate the economic and environmental competitiveness of heterotrophic microalgae production based on renewable bio-feedstock of lignocellulose.

Material efficiency (ME) can support rapid climate change mitigation and circular economy. Here, we comprehensively assess the circularity of ME strategies for copper use in the U.S. housing services (including residential buildings and major household appliances) by integrating use-phase material and energy demand. Although the ME strategies of more intensive floor space use and extended lifetime of appliances and buildings reduce the primary copper demand, employing these strategies increases the commonly neglected use-phase share of total copper requirements during the century from 23–28 to 22–42%. Use-phase copper requirements for home improvements have remained larger than the demand gap (copper demand minus scrap availability) for much of the century, limiting copper circularity in the U.S. housing services. Further, use-phase energy consumption can negate the benefits of ME strategies. For instance, the lifetime extension of lower-efficiency refrigerators increases the copper use and net environmental impact by increased electricity use despite reductions from less production. This suggests a need for more attention to the use phase when assessing circularity, especially for products that are material and energy intensive during use. To avoid burden shifting, policymakers should consider the entire life cycle of products supporting services when pursuing circular economy goals.

Pregnancy presents a unique risk to chemical researchers due to their occupational exposures to chemical, equipment, and physical hazards in chemical research laboratories across science, engineering, and technology disciplines. Understanding “risk” as a function of hazard, exposure, and vulnerability, this review aims to critically examine the state of the science for the risks and associated recommendations (or lack thereof) for pregnant researchers in chemical laboratories (labs). Commonly encountered hazards for pregnant lab workers include chemical hazards (organic solvents, heavy metals, engineered nanomaterials, and endocrine disruptors), radiation hazards (ionizing radiation producing equipment and materials and nonionizing radiation producing equipment), and other hazards related to the lab environment (excessive noise, excessive heat, psychosocial stress, strenuous physical work, and/or abnormal working hours). Lab relevant doses and routes of exposure in the chemical lab environment along with literature and governmental recommendations or resources for exposure mitigation are critically assessed. The specific windows of vulnerability based on stage of pregnancy are described for each hazard, if available. Finally, policy gaps for further scientific research are detailed to enhance future guidance to protect pregnant lab workers.

Lake Reserv Manage. 37:406–417.Zebra (Dreissena polymorpha) and quagga (D. bugensis) mussels, first introduced from central Asia into the Great Lakes of North America in the late 1980s, have crossed the continental divide and more recently spread across western North America. At the same time, several new technologies have been developed for the early detection of dreissenids, including the FlowCam, a digital imaging-in-flow instrument, intended to detect dreissenid planktonic larvae (veligers). However, the efficacy of this technology has rarely been tested. We experimentally evaluated the FlowCam’s ability to capture identifiable images of quagga mussel veligers under 2 different types of conditions: (i) deionized water, and (ii) Columbia River Basin water (CRBW), including natural sediment and native plankton. We further evaluated the FlowCam’s ability to distinguish between dreissenid veligers and corbiculid veligers (Asian clam, Corbicula fluminea). We interpret our results to indicate that the FlowCam can consistently detect dreissenid veligers across a range of veliger densities. Moreover, the presence of other plankton and detritus only slightly affected dreissenid detection by the FlowCam. However, the orientation of individual bivalve veligers as they were imaged by the FlowCam precluded specific identification of a substantial proportion (24.8%) of veligers as either dreissenid or corbiculid. We suggest that the FlowCam is an important detection tool best utilized as part of a multifaceted approach, including traditional microscopy and possibly environmental DNA.
