Abstract

KM2A is one of the main sub-arrays of LHAASO, working on gamma ray astronomy and cosmic ray physics at energies above 10 TeV. Detector simulation is the important foundation for estimating detector performance and data analysis. It is a big challenge to simulate the KM2A detector in the framework of Geant4 due to the need to track numerous photons from a large number of detector units (>6000) with large altitude difference (30 m) and huge coverage (1.3 km2). In this paper, the design of the KM2A simulation code G4KM2A based on Geant4 is introduced. The process of G4KM2A is optimized mainly in memory consumption to avoid memory overflow. Some simplifications are used to significantly speed up the execution of G4KM2A. The running time is reduced by at least 30 times compared to full detector simulation. The particle distributions and the core/angle resolution comparison between simulation and experimental data of the full KM2A array are also presented, which show good agreement.

Abstract

Introduction: One of main scientific goals of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) is to accurately measure the energy spectra of different cosmic ray compositions around the ‘knee’ region. The Wide Field-of-View (FoV) Cherenkov Telescope Array (WFCTA), which is one of the main detectors of LHAASO and has 18 telescopes, is built to achieve this goal. Multiple telescopes are put together and point to connected directions for a larger FoV. Method: Telescopes are deployed spatially as close as possible, but due to their own size, the distance between two adjacent telescopes is about 10 m. Therefore, the Cherenkov lateral distribution and the parallax between the two telescopes should be considered in the event building process for images crossing over the boundaries of FoVs of the telescopes. An event building method for Cherenkov images measured by multiple telescopes of WFCTA is developed. The performance of the shower measurements using the combined images is evaluated by comparing with showers that are fully contained by a virtual telescope in simulation. Results and conclusion: It is proved that the developed event building process can help to increase the FoV of WFCTA by 30% while maintaining the same reconstruction quality, compared to the separate telescope reconstruction method.

Abstract

Purpose: Observation of high energy and very high emission from Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) is crucial to study the gigantic explosion and the underline processes. With a large field-of-view and almost full duty cycle, the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA), a sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), is appropriate to monitor the very high energy emission from unpredictable transients such as GRBs. Method: Nevertheless, the main issue for an extensive air shower array is the high energy threshold which limits the horizon of the detector. To address this issue a new trigger method is developed in this article to lower the energy threshold of  WCDA for GRB observation. Result: The proposed method significantly improves the detection efficiency of WCDA for gamma-rays around the GRB direction at 10-300 GeV. The sensitivity of the WCDA for GRB detection with the new trigger method is estimated. The achieved sensitivity of the quarter WCDA array above 10 GeV is comparable with that of Fermi-LAT. The data analysis process and corresponding fluence upper limit for GRB 190719C is presented as an example.

6. The clinical warning index of severe COVID-19: discussion based on the clinical features and outcomes of 4 patients.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is spreading worldwide. The onset of severe COVID-19 could lead to multiple organ damage and even death. It is worth paying attention to the warning index of the onset for severe COVID-19 so that patients can be identified and monitored carefully. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The report is a retrospective study that describes and analyzes the clinical features during the treatment of COVID-19. Four patients with COVID-19 were involved in this study, who were father-and-son pairs from two families. All patients were treated with the same combination of anti-microbial and anti-viral agents for 10-14 days, adjusting for the disease status. The primary outcome measure was SARS-CoV-2 detection using RT-qPCR with oropharyngeal swabs. Chest CT imaging served as a secondary outcome measure. RESULTS: One of the four patients progressed to severe disease, while the remaining patients recovered with the same treatment. A persistent decrease in the lymphocyte ratio and increase in the C-reactive protein (CRP) level were observed in the severe patient, along with other typical symptoms of COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS: The cases we described indicate that blood cell and CRP tests could be useful risk warnings of severe onset of COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

7. Anesthetic effect and safety of sevoflurane combined with propofol in removing tracheobronchial foreign bodies in children.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the anesthetic effect and safety of sevoflurane combined with propofol in removing tracheal foreign bodies in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed, EMbase, The Cochrane Library, China Biomedicine Database, China National Knowledge Internet, WanFang Data, and VIP databases were searched. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of sevoflurane combined with propofol for anesthesia during tracheal foreign body extraction in children were collected. The retrieval time was from the establishment of the database to April 10, 2019. RevMan 5.3 software was used for meta-analysis after two researchers independently screened the literature, extracted data, and evaluated the risk bias included in the study. RESULTS: Seven RCTs involving 473 patients were included. Meta-analysis showed that the time of loss of consciousness significantly reduced (MD=-38.27, 95% CI (-41.77, -34.77), p < 0.00001) and the recovery time significantly reduced (MD=-12.29, 95% CI (-2.77, -1.80), p < 0.00001) in the sevoflurane combined with propofol group compared with the control group. In terms of safety, the heart rate was slower [MD=-11.00, 95% CI (-21.64, -0.36), p=0.04 < 0.05] and the incidence of cough and breath holding was lower [MD=0.38, 95% CI (0.19, 0.78), p=0.008] in the sevoflurane combined with propofol group than in the control group. However, no significant difference in respiratory rate and SPO 2 < 90% was found between the two groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Sevoflurane combined with propofol is worth popularizing because of its high anesthetic effect and safety in the removal of tracheal foreign bodies in children. However, given the limited quantity and quality of the included studies, the above conclusions need to be verified by high-quality studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to discuss the unique clinical features of patients with 2019-nCoV in Zhengzhou City to provide references for clinical diagnosis and treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventeen patients with 2019-nCoV in Zhengzhou People’s Hospital from February to March 2020 were collected. Their epidemiology, clinical symptoms, laboratory examinations, and chest CT images were reviewed. All 17 patients were aged between 12-83 years, with an average age of 47 years, and consisted of 10 males (58.8%) and 7 females (41.2%). Two patients had histories of living or traveling in Wuhan, and 9 patients were attacked locally. The 6 remaining patients were unknown about incidence reasons. RESULTS: The average incubation period was 10 days, and the average time of the course of the disease was 9 days. Among the participants, 12 patients had fever as the first symptoms and 5 patients had normal body temperature. One patient was symptom-free carrier, and one patient had serious symptoms. One patient developed from mild symptoms to severe symptoms, and 14 patients had mild symptoms. Moreover, 7 patients had complications of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and hypertension, 1 patient was in the advanced stage of squamous cell lung carcinoma, and 1 patient had diabetes mellitus, renal failure, and late-stage uremia. According to novel coronavirus nucleic acid test, 8 patients were positive, accounting for 47.1%. All patients were negative in the novel coronavirus IgM antibody test and negative in other common respiratory pathogen detection. All 17 patients had ground glass-like high-density shadow or stripped high-density shadow on lung CT images, accompanied with many affected lesions on two lungs. The average stay in hospital was 10 days, and the average time of the course of the disease was 9 days. After hospitalization, 15 patients were discharged from the hospital upon recovery, 1 patient was transferred to superior hospital for continuous treatment, and 1 patient died. Patients with 2019-nCoV in Zhengzhou People’s Hospital were mainly attacked in local areas, and most of them had mild symptoms. The positive rate of the nucleic acid test was 47.1%. CONCLUSIONS: The main clinical characteristics are increased neutrophil granulocytes, increased C-reactive proteins, decreased lymphocytes, ground glass-like or stripped lesions on lung CT image, common complications of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and favorable prognosis. Abstract

The extension of the cosmic-ray spectrum beyond 1 petaelectronvolt (PeV; 1015electronvolts) indicates the existence of the so-called PeVatrons—cosmic-ray factories that accelerate particles to PeV energies. We need to locate and identify such objects to find the origin of Galactic cosmic rays1. The principal signature of both electron and proton PeVatrons is ultrahigh-energy (exceeding 100 TeV) γ radiation. Evidence of the presence of a proton PeVatron has been found in the Galactic Centre, according to the detection of a hard-spectrum radiation extending to 0.04 PeV (ref. 2). Although γ-rays with energies slightly higher than 0.1 PeV have been reported from a few objects in the Galactic plane3–6, unbiased identification and in-depth exploration of PeVatrons requires detection of γ-rays with energies well above 0.1 PeV. Here we report the detection of more than 530 photons at energies above 100 teraelectronvolts and up to 1.4 PeV from 12 ultrahigh-energy γ-ray sources with a statistical significance greater than seven standard deviations. Despite having several potential counterparts in their proximity, including pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants and star-forming regions, the PeVatrons responsible for the ultrahigh-energy γ-rays have not yet been firmly localized and identified (except for the Crab Nebula), leaving open the origin of these extreme accelerators.

Abstract

Purpose: The main scientific goal of LHAASO-WCDA is to survey gamma-ray sources with energy from 100 GeV to 30 TeV. To observe high-energy shower events, especially to measure the energy spectrum of cosmic rays from 100 TeV to 10 PeV, a dynamic range extension system (WCDA++) is designed to use a 1.5-inch PMT with a dynamic range of four orders of magnitude for each cell in WCDA-1. Method: The dynamic range is extended by using these PMTs to measure the effective charge density in the core region of air shower events, which is an important parameter for identifying the composition of primary particles. Result and Conclusion: The system has been running for more than one year. In this paper, the details of the design and performance of WCDA++ are presented.

11. A sentiment analysis approach based on exploiting Chinese linguistic features and classification

Abstract

This paper proposes a novel approach to exploiting linguistic features and SVMperfalgorithm based semantic classification, and this approach is applied into sentiment analysis. It uses the dependency relationship to do the linguistic feature extraction. This paper adopts χ2(chi-square) and pointwise mutual information (PMI) metrics for feature selection. Furthermore, as for the approach on sentiment analysis, this paper uses the SVMperfalgorithm to implement the alternative structural formulation of the SVM optimisation problem for classification. E-commerce datasets are used to evaluate the experiment performance. Experiment results show the feasibility of the approach. Existing problems and further works are also presented.

12. Uptake characteristics of levofloxacin for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori by GES-1 and MGC80-3 cells.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to study the uptake of levofloxacin for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori by human gastric epithelial cell lines, GES-1 and MGC80-3. MATERIALS AND METHODS: High performance l iquid chromatography (HPLC) and coomassie brilliant blue staining, among other methods, were used to study the uptake of levofloxacin in GES-1 and MGC80-3 cells. The effect of time, concentration, temperature, pH, cyclosporine A, verapamil, and cimetidine on uptake was analyzed. RESULTS: The uptake of levofloxacin by GES-1 and MGC80-3 cells reached a steady state after 15 minutes of incubation, and was enhanced by increasing the extracellular levofloxacin concentration, although not in a linear manner. A maximum uptake was observed at 37°C and pH 7.4. Cyclosporin A and verapamil enhanced uptake in GES-1 cells by 2.07%-13.23% (p > 0.05), and 17.5%- 35.3% in MGC80-3 cells (p < 0.05). The uptake of levofloxacin was not affected by cimetidine. CONCLUSIONS: P-glycoprotein mediates levofloxacin uptake in MGC80-3 cell. Further, P-glycoprotein may be involved in levofloxacin uptake in GES-1 cells. However, organic cation transporters were not involved in levofloxacin uptake in MGC80-3 and GES-1 cells. Abstract

In analogy to electromagnetically induced transparency, optomechanically induced transparency was proposed recently in [Science330, 1520 (2010)SCIEAS0036-807510.1126/science.1195596]. In this Letter, we demonstrate another form of induced transparency enabled by second-order nonlinearity. A practical application of the second-order nonlinearity induced transparency is to measure the second-order nonlinear coefficient. Our scheme might find applications in quantum optics and quantum information processing.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To examine the correlation factors for hemorrhagic transformation after intravenous thrombolytic therapy, so as to improve the forecast about hemorrhagic transformation in the process of thrombolysis, and provide theoretical basis for prognosis of the patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 1223 patients with intravenous thrombolytic therapy including NIHSS score before intravenous thrombolytic therapy and MRS score by follow-up of three months after intravenous thrombolytic therapy were enrolled in this study, and related clinical data were collected. t test, 2 test and logistic regression analysis were used to find the correlation factors for hemorrhagic transformation. RESULTS: Single-factor analysis found hypertension, diabetes mellitus, history of stroke and collateral circulation insufficiency had statistical significances between each type of hemorrhage group groups. Amongst of the history of hypertension, diabetes and stroke was correlation factor for prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: Intravenous thrombolysis hemorrhagic transformation associated with these factors including the vessel wall, blood composition and biochemical markers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

15. Effects of immunological challenge induced by lipopolysaccharide on skeletal muscle fiber type conversion of piglets1

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of immunological challenge on the skeletal muscle fiber type conversion of piglets. Sixteen Large White weaned barrows (28 ± 3 d, 8.22 ± 0.89 kg BW) were allotted by weight and litter to 2 groups: the control group and the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) group. Saline (control) or LPS was injected intravenously via a jugular catheter on d 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 at an initial dosage of 80 μg/kg BW, which was increased by 30% at each subsequent injection. Blood samples were collected via the jugular catheter 3 h after the LPS challenge on d −1, 1, 5, 9, and 13. Muscle tissue samples were collected from the LM after exsanguination on d 15. The LPS challenge increased the plasma IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), cortisol, IL-1β, and haptoglobin concentrations on d 1 and 5 (P< 0.01) and increased the plasma IL-6 (P< 0.05), TNF-α (P< 0.05), and haptoglobin (P< 0.01) levels on d 9. Compared with that of the control group, the ADG of the LPS group decreased by 40.00% (P< 0.01), 29.52% (P< 0.05), and 19.30% (P< 0.05), and the ADFI decreased by 25.09% (P< 0.01), 23.15% (P< 0.05), and 19.47% (P< 0.05) during d 1 to 4, d 5 to 8, and d 9 to 15, respectively. In the LM of LPS-challenged piglets, myosin heavy chain 1 (MyHC1) mRNA and protein expression tended to be reduced (P= 0.08, 0.09), whereas MyHC2xmRNA, MyHC2bmRNA, and MyHC2 protein expression increased (P< 0.05). The LPS challenge reduced succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) activity (P< 0.05) and increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity (P< 0.05) in the LM of piglets. Compared with those in the control group, transcriptional peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor coactivator-α (PGC-α) mRNA (P< 0.05), calcineurin (CaN) mRNA, and protein expression were reduced (P< 0.05), and PGC-α protein expression tended to be reduced (P= 0.08) in the LM of LPS-challenged piglets. These results show that immunological challenge induced by LPS resulted in a shift from type I to type II fibers in the LM of piglets, which may be mediated by the downregulation of the CaN/PGC-α signaling pathway.

Abstract

It has been long known that reinforced concrete (RC) frames enhanced masonry panels' performance, and masonry infill panels influenced strength and stiffness of the RC frames. Window openings are indispensable ingredients of masonry panels for functional reasons. However, few researches have been conducted on framed masonry panels with openings, although there are many numerical studies available on solid framed masonry panels' behaviour. In this study, a three-dimensional numerical model, which is based on the surface based contact cohesive interaction model and friction principle, is proposed for non-linear static analysis of perforated framed masonry panels. The numerical modelling is compared to the experiment studies found in the literature, which indicate that it can successfully predict not only the lateral capacity and stiffness but also the failure mode of the physical specimens. Abstract

The master sintering curve (MSC), in which the sintered density is a unique function of the integral of a temperature function over time, is insensitive to the heating path. Densification of α-Al2O3 with the mean particle size of 2.5μm was continuously recorded during heating at 0.5, 2 and 5°C/min. A MSC was successfully constructed using dilatometry data with the help of a combined-stage sintering model. The validity of the MSC was verified by seveal experimental runs. The microstructural evolution with densification during different heating-rate sintering was explored. The sintered microstructure is a function of the time-temperature sintering conditions, and it is verified that there exists a link between sintered density and microstructure. 19. Improved algorithm based on a fiber loop: applications for optical water vapor sensor

Abstract

An improved algorithm based on a fiber loop optical structure is proposed for measurement of water vapor concentration. Compared with the traditional algorithm, the intrinsic loss of optical devices in the loop is no longer necessary to be accurately measured but instead is directly eliminated by normalization. The concentration of the analyte can be determined by only two pulses without the need for exponential curve fitting, which leads to a significant reduction in the amount of data required to make a measurement. The restriction on the inherent loss of the fiber loop system also can be eased. In addition, a background absorption problem caused by the water vapor existing inside internal end-face gaps of optical components is solved. The mean absolute error of 29 parts per million by volume has been achieved with a 6.5 cm gas gap by using the new algorithm.

Background:Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is a neonatal endocrine disease with an incidence of 1:2000 to 1:4000 worldwide. In about 85% of patients CH is secondary to thyroid dysgenesis, but its pathogenesis remains unclear. Thyroid transcription factors, such as paired box transcription factor 8 (PAX8), play an important role in thyroid organogenesis and development. Materials and methods:Blood samples were collected from 300 CH patients in Shandong Province, China, and genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood leukocytes. Using PCR and direct sequencing, exon 3 and exon 4 of PAX8were analyzed. Results:Analysis of PAX8 in 300 CH patients revealed heterozygous missense mutations or variations in two unrelated patients; one was a known missense mutation G92A, resulting in an arginine to histidine substitution at codon 31, the other was a missense variation G122T, resulting in the substitution of a glycine at position 41 by a valine residue. The patient with the R31H mutation had CH with thyroid hypoplasia, while the patient with the G41V variation had CH with a eutopic and normal-sized thyroid gland. Conclusion:We report a heterozygous missense mutation and a variation in PAX8 in two out of 300 unrelated Chinese CH patients, showing that the PAX8mutation rate is very low in CH patients in China.

Abstract

The powdery mildew resistance gene Pm2is effective in China. Bulked segregant analysis (BSA) was used to search for microsatellite markers linked to Pm2. Twenty-one microsatellite primer pairs located on chromosome 5DS were screened; three polymorphic loci Xcfd81-5DS, Xgwm190-5DS, and Xcfd18-5DS were linked to Pm2using an F2population from Chinese Spring × C114118 (with Pm2) consisting of 814 individuals. The genetic distances between Pm2and the three markers were: 2.0cM, 34.2cM and 44.2cM, respectively. Microsatellite marker Xcfd81-5DS could be used in marker assisted selection for Pm2provided any chosen Pm2source also carries the relevant marker.

24. Advances in Adhesive Joining of Carbon Fibre/Polymer Composites to Steel Members for Repair and Rehabilitation of Bridge Structures

Abstract

Generally, it is relatively easy to obtain a high joint strength with most modern bonding systems if these are cured under ideal factory conditions. However, civil engineering construction joints are cured on site and are required to last the lifetime of the structural member in harsh environmental conditions. This implies that site joints might not be constructed and cured as well as those fabricated in the factory.The paper compares two possible methods for bonding an FRP composite patch/plate to a steel adherend suitable for construction sites. The first method utilises the accepted technique of bonding two dissimilar materials using a two-part cold cure adhesive. The second method employs a pre-impregnated FRP composite plate in conjunction with a compatible film adhesive; these comparisons are undertaken by examining the results of double-strap butt joint tests. A possible site technique using the pre-impregnated FRP composite to upgrade a steel beam whilst it is under a low frequency vibration load is investigated; this represents the repair of a steel bridge constantly under traversing traffic.The butt joint test results show that on average, the pre-impregnated composite in conjunction with the film adhesive leads to a failure load which is 15% higher than that of the cold setting adhesive technique. The results of the rehabilitated beam tests show that the bonded joint between the pre-impregnated CFRP composite and the steel adherend did not suffer any significant damage from the low frequency vibrations imposed upon the steel beam during the cure period.

25. Fabrication and evaluation of a polymer Li-ion battery with microporous gel electrolyte

Abstract

This paper introduces an easy method for the fabrication of polymer Li-ion batteries with microporous gel electrolyte (MGE). The MGE is a multiphase electrolyte, which is composed of liquid electrolyte, gel electrolyte, and polymer matrix. The MGE not only has high ionic conductivity and good adhesion to the electrodes at low temperatures, but also retains good mechanical strength at elevated temperatures. Therefore, the MGE batteries are able to operate over a wide temperature range. During battery fabrication, the MGE is formed in situ by introducing liquid electrolyte into a swellable microporous polymer membrane and then heating or cycling the battery. In this work, the chemical compatibility of MGE with metal lithium during 60 °C storage and with LiMn 2O 4cathode during cycling was studied. In addition, graphite/MGE/LiMn 2O 4 Li-ion batteries were made and evaluated.

26. On-column amperometric detection of ofloxacin and pasiniazid in urine by capillary electrophoresis with an improved fractured joint and small detection cell

Abstract

An improved high-voltage electric field isolating joint and small detection cell have been carefully designed and fabricated. The joint possesses short steady time, high electric conductance efficiency and high performance. The cell is convenient to install and remove the capillaries with and without the joint, as well as to fix, adjust and insert the microelectrode into the detection capillary. Using the joint and the cell, an analytical method for determination of ofloxacin (Oflx) and pasiniazid (Ipa) in urine by capillary electrophoresis with on-column amperometric detection was developed. The calibration lines were linear in the range of 10–100 mg l−1 of Oflx and 1.0–50 mg l−1 of Ipa, respectively. The detection limits were 8.5 mg l−1 of Oflx and 0.80 mg l−1 of Ipa. Their recovery ranged from 101 to 104%. The accuracy and intra-day and inter-day reproducibility of Oflx and Ipa were determined with satisfactory results. This method was successfully used for determining Oflx and Ipa in human urine.

34. Somatic cell hybrid and long-range physical mapping of 11p13 microdissected genomic clones.

Abstract

Microdissection and microcloning of banded human metaphase chromosomes have been used to construct a genomic library of 20,000 clones that is highly enriched for chromosome 11p13 DNA sequences. Clones from this library have been mapped on a panel of human-rodent somatic cell hybrids that divides the region from distal p12 to proximal p14 into seven physical intervals, A total of 1500 clones has been isolated, 250 clones have been characterized, and 58 clones have been mapped. Six of the clones were used to complete a long-range physical map of 7.5 megabases through the region. Two of the clones are localized to the Wilms tumor (WT) region, three are localized to the aniridia (AN2) region, and two are localized to the region between WT and AN2. The library represents DNA sequences spanning a distance of approximately 13 x 10(6) base pairs, with an average density of one clone per 37,000 base pairs.

Abstract

A proteomic approach combining two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and tandem mass spectrometry was used to compare hemolymph expression profiles of a beta-cypermethrin-resistant Blattella germanica L. strain and a beta-cypermethrin-susceptible strain. Twenty-eight hemolymph proteins were differentially expressed in the resistant cockroach strain; 19 proteins were upregulated and 9 proteins were downregulated compared with the susceptible strain. Protein identification indicated that expression of putative cuticular protein, nitric oxide synthase, triosephosphate isomerase, alpha-amylase, ABC transporter, and Per a 3 allergen was elevated, and expression of arginine kinase and glycosidase was reduced. The differential expression of these proteins reflects the overall change in cellular structure and metabolism related to the resistance of pyrethroid insecticides.
