The shortage of reliable primary taxonomic data limits the description of biological taxa and the understanding of biodiversity patterns and processes, complicating biogeographical, ecological, and evolutionary studies. This deficit creates a significant taxonomic impediment to biodiversity research and conservation planning. The taxonomic impediment and the biodiversity crisis are widely recognized, highlighting the urgent need for reliable taxonomic data. Over the past decade, numerous countries worldwide have devoted considerable effort to Target 1 of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), which called for the preparation of a working list of all known plant species by 2010 and an online world Flora by 2020. Brazil is a megadiverse country, home to more of the world's known plant species than any other country. Despite that, Flora Brasiliensis, concluded in 1906, was the last comprehensive treatment of the Brazilian flora. The lack of accurate estimates of the number of species of algae, fungi, and plants occurring in Brazil contributes to the prevailing taxonomic impediment and delays progress towards the GSPC targets. Over the past 12 years, a legion of taxonomists motivated to meet Target 1 of the GSPC, worked together to gather and integrate knowledge on the algal, plant, and fungal diversity of Brazil. Overall, a team of about 980 taxonomists joined efforts in a highly collaborative project that used cybertaxonomy to prepare an updated Flora of Brazil, showing the power of scientific collaboration to reach ambitious goals. This paper presents an overview of the Brazilian Flora 2020 and provides taxonomic and spatial updates on the algae, fungi, and plants found in one of the world's most biodiverse countries. We further identify collection gaps and summarize future goals that extend beyond 2020. Our results show that Brazil is home to 46,975 native species of algae, fungi, and plants, of which 19,669 are endemic to the country. The data compiled to date suggests that the Atlantic Rainforest might be the most diverse Brazilian domain for all plant groups except gymnosperms, which are most diverse in the Amazon. However, scientific knowledge of Brazilian diversity is still unequally distributed, with the Atlantic Rainforest and the Cerrado being the most intensively sampled and studied biomes in the country. In times of “scientific reductionism”, with botanical and mycological sciences suffering pervasive depreciation in recent decades, the first online Flora of Brazil 2020 significantly enhanced the quality and quantity of taxonomic data available for algae, fungi, and plants from Brazil. This project also made all the information freely available online, providing a firm foundation for future research and for the management, conservation, and sustainable use of the Brazilian funga and flora.

Many scholars have suggested that people could improve their well-being by developing closer connections with nature and that this would also promote the sustainable behaviors needed to address climate change. Research generally corroborates this idea, but few studies have examined the more specific hypothesis that positive emotions (caused by nature or otherwise) can directly influence pro-environmental behaviors. In particular, self-transcendent emotions such as awe, compassion, and gratitude can be prompted by nature, and they seem to foster prosocial behaviors. Most pro-environmental behaviors are also prosocial; they require cooperation and they benefit others. Some recent studies suggest that self-transcendent emotions can cause pro-environmental behavior, although results are mixed overall. We identify strategies for future research to resolve these inconclusive suggestions.

Surgeons often conduct difficult conversations with patients near the end of life, yet surgical education provides little formalized communication training. We developed a communication tool, Best Case/Worst Case, and trained surgeons using a one-on-one resource intensive format that was effective but difficult to scale for widespread dissemination. We aimed to generate an implementation package to teach surgeons using fewer resources without sacrificing fidelity.

We conducted preregistered replications of 28 classic and contemporary published findings, with protocols that were peer reviewed in advance, to examine variation in effect magnitudes across samples and settings. Each protocol was administered to approximately half of 125 samples that comprised 15,305 participants from 36 countries and territories. Using the conventional criterion of statistical significance (p< .05), we found that 15 (54%) of the replications provided evidence of a statistically significant effect in the same direction as the original finding. With a strict significance criterion (p< .0001), 14 (50%) of the replications still provided such evidence, a reflection of the extremely high-powered design. Seven (25%) of the replications yielded effect sizes larger than the original ones, and 21 (75%) yielded effect sizes smaller than the original ones. The median comparable Cohen’s ds were 0.60 for the original findings and 0.15 for the replications. The effect sizes were small (< 0.20) in 16 of the replications (57%), and 9 effects (32%) were in the direction opposite the direction of the original effect. Across settings, the Qstatistic indicated significant heterogeneity in 11 (39%) of the replication effects, and most of those were among the findings with the largest overall effect sizes; only 1 effect that was near zero in the aggregate showed significant heterogeneity according to this measure. Only 1 effect had a tau value greater than .20, an indication of moderate heterogeneity. Eight others had tau values near or slightly above .10, an indication of slight heterogeneity. Moderation tests indicated that very little heterogeneity was attributable to the order in which the tasks were performed or whether the tasks were administered in lab versus online. Exploratory comparisons revealed little heterogeneity between Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) cultures and less WEIRD cultures (i.e., cultures with relatively high and low WEIRDness scores, respectively). Cumulatively, variability in the observed effect sizes was attributable more to the effect being studied than to the sample or setting in which it was studied.

More and more psychological researchers have come to appreciate the perils of common but poorly justified research practices and are rethinking commonly held standards for evaluating research. As this methodological reform expresses itself in psychological research, peer reviewers of such work must also adapt their practices to remain relevant. Reviewers of journal submissions wield considerable power to promote methodological reform, and thereby contribute to the advancement of a more robust psychological literature. We describe concrete practices that reviewers can use to encourage transparency, intellectual humility, and more valid assessments of the methods and statistics reported in articles.

Silicate-sulfide liquid immiscibility in mantle-derived magmas has important control on the budget of siderophile and chalcophile metals, and is considered to be instrumental in the origin orthomagmatic sulfide deposits. Data on primitive sulfide melts in natural samples, even those representing most voluminous magmatism in oceanic rifts, are very scarce due to the small size and poor preservation of incipient sulfide melt globules. Here we present the first detailed report of the crystallized sulfides melts in the oceanic picrites of the (presumably) Cretaceous age Kamchatsky Mys ophiolite complex in Eastern Kamchatka (Far East Russia). Sulfide melts are present in three forms; (1) as inclusions in olivine (87.1–89.6 mol% Fo), (2) interstitial to the groundmass minerals (clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and Ti-magnetite) of studied picrites, and (3) as daughter phases in silicate melt inclusions hosted by olivine and Cr-spinel phenocrysts. The sulfide melt inclusions in olivine and the groundmass of studied rocks are composed of several sulfide phases that correspond to the monosulfide (Fe–Ni; Mss) and intermediate (Fe–Cu–Ni; Iss) solid solutions. Several <0.5 μm Pd–Sn, Pt–Ag, and Au–Ag phases are recorded within the matrix sulfides, commonly along phase boundaries and fractures. Major elements (S, Fe, Cu, Ni, Co), platinum group elements (PGE), and gold analyzed in the homogenized olivine-hosted sulfide melt inclusions, and phases identified in the matrix sulfides record the range of magmatic sulfide compositions. The most primitive sulfide liquids are notably enriched in Ni and Cu [(Ni+Cu)/Fe, at% > 0.5], continuously evolve with crystallization of (e.g., increasing Cu/Ni and Au/PGE) and demonstrate metal fractionation between Mssand Iss. Although the compositional systematics found in this study are consistent with those previously recorded, the compositions of individual sulfide phases are strongly affected by the noble metal (PGE, Au) “nuggets” that exsolve at subsolidus temperatures and form during serpentinization of the rocks. We conclude that the budget of noble metals in the studied picrites is controlled by sulfides, but the abundances of Pt and Au are influenced by mobility in post-magmatic alteration. Our data can be also used for modeling sulfide saturation at crustal pressures and understanding behavior of the noble metals in primitive oceanic magmas.

IMPORTANCE: Although many older adults prefer to avoid burdensome interventions with limited ability to preserve their functional status, aggressive treatments, including surgery, are common near the end of life. Shared decision making is critical to achieve value-concordant treatment decisions and minimize unwanted care. However, communication in the acute inpatient setting is challenging. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the proof of concept of an intervention to teach surgeons to use the Best Case/Worst Case framework as a strategy to change surgeon communication and promote shared decision making during high-stakes surgical decisions. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Our prospective pre-post study was conducted from June 2014 to August 2015, and data were analyzed using a mixed methods approach. The data were drawn from decision-making conversations between 32 older inpatients with an acute nonemergent surgical problem, 30 family members, and 25 surgeons at 1 tertiary care hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. INTERVENTIONS: A 2-hour training session to teach each study-enrolled surgeon to use the Best Case/Worst Case communication framework. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: We scored conversation transcripts using OPTION 5, an observer measure of shared decision making, and used qualitative content analysis to characterize patterns in conversation structure, description of outcomes, and deliberation over treatment alternatives. RESULTS: The study participants were patients aged 68 to 95 years (n = 32), 44% of whom had 5 or more comorbid conditions; family members of patients (n = 30); and surgeons (n = 17). The median OPTION 5 score improved from 41 preintervention (interquartile range, 26-66) to 74 after Best Case/Worst Case training (interquartile range, 60-81). Before training, surgeons described the patient’s problem in conjunction with an operative solution, directed deliberation over options, listed discrete procedural risks, and did not integrate preferences into a treatment recommendation. After training, surgeons using Best Case/Worst Case clearly presented a choice between treatments, described a range of postoperative trajectories including functional decline, and involved patients and families in deliberation. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Using the Best Case/Worst Case framework changed surgeon communication by shifting the focus of decision-making conversations from an isolated surgical problem to a discussion about treatment alternatives and outcomes. This intervention can help surgeons structure challenging conversations to promote shared decision making in the acute setting.

Previous studies have found that both resident and staff surgeons highly value postoperative feedback; and that such feedback has high educational value. However, little is known about how to consistently deliver this feedback. Our aim was to understand how often surgical residents should receive feedback and what barriers are preventing this from occurring.

Polarimeters were developed to measure the polarization of the proton beam at RHIC in relative scale through the asymmetry measurement of the elastic proton-carbon scattering. Recoil carbon ions with kinetic energy of $400 \le E \le 900\,{\rm keV}$were detected by silicon strip detectors installed at $90^{\circ}$with respect to the beam. The absolute polarization is given by normalizing against another polarimeter implemented at RHIC, namely a polarized hydrogen gas jet polarimeter. In this report, the details of polarization measurements, data analysis, and systematic uncertainties are discussed based on the data taken during $\sqrt{s}=200\,{\rm GeV}$operation of Run05 at RHIC.

ABSTRACTBackground Efforts to improve diabetes care in residency programs are ongoing and in the midst of continuity clinic redesign at many institutions. While there appears to be a link between resident continuity and improvement in glycemic control for diabetic patients, it is uncertain whether clinic structure affects quality measures and patient outcomes.Methods This multi-institutional, cross-sectional study included 12 internal medicine programs. Three outcomes (glycemic control, blood pressure control, and achievement of target low-density lipoprotein LDL) and 2 process measures (A1C and LDL measurement) were reported for diabetic patients. Traditional, block, and combination clinic models were compared using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Analysis was adjusted for continuity, utilization, workload, and panel size.Results No significant differences were found in glycemic control across clinic models (P  .06). The percentage of diabetic patients with LDL < 100 mg/dL was 60 in block, compared to 54.9 and 55 in traditional and combination models (P  .006). The percentage of diabetic patients with blood pressure < 130/80 mmHg was 48.4 in block, compared to 36.7 and 36.9 in other models (P < .001). The percentage of diabetic patients with HbA1C measured was 92.1 in block compared to 75.2 and 82.1 in other models (P < .001). Also, the percentage of diabetic patients with LDL measured was significantly different across all groups, with 91.2 in traditional, 70.4 in combination, and 83.3 in block model programs (P < .001).Conclusions While high scores on diabetic quality measures are achievable in any clinic model, the block model design was associated with better performance.

In this review paper a set of chemical (H2O, CO2, S, HCl, HF) and water isotopic (δD, δ18O) data is compiled for 26 subduction zone volcanoes and 3 volcanoes of other tectonic settings. To the arc-volcano dataset we added new data on high-temperature gas vents from three Kamchatkan volcanoes (Gorely, Bezymianny and Tolbachik) and also published data on the chemical composition of volcanic plumes obtained by remote instrumental techniques (Open-Path Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (OP-FTIR), Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) MultiGas) for volcanoes of different tectonic settings. Three typical cases of the persistent volcanic degassing in terms of δD, δ18O of the volcanic vapour and its HCl content are discussed in detail: (1) Kudryavy type with a clear two-end-member mixing behaviour; (2) degassing of active or cooling lava domes with fractionation of both water isotopes and Cl content; and (3) degassing of small volcanic islands with a complex admixing of meteorics and seawater. We show that independently of the complexity of the shallow processes which affect volcano degassing, the highest temperature volcanic gases are characterized by δD values and HCl concentrations close to −25‰ V-SMOW and 0.5–1.0 mol%, respectively. These values are the same for any volcanic arc (except maybe Mediterranean volcanoes) and are the result of seawater recycling at subduction zones on the global scale. In contrast to volcanic fluids of non-arc settings, the arc-magmatic fluid has uniformity not only in water isotopic composition and Cl content but also in the total composition (H–C–O–S–Cl–F).

Background:First metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint arthrodesis is a successful, commonly performed procedure for many conditions affecting this joint. The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes between patients who had primary first MTP joint fusions with either noncontoured stainless steel semitubular plates or precontoured plates. Our hypothesis was that there would be no difference in clinical or radiographic outcomes between these groups.Methods:A search based on operative report coding was performed to detect all patients who had undergone primary first MTP joint arthrodesis with a dorsal plating construct at our institution from 2005 to 2010. A retrospective review of electronic medical records and postoperative radiographs was performed to determine time to clinical and radiographic union, pain scores, complications, MTP angle, and proximal phalanx to floor angle. A Kruskal-Wallis test was used for continuous variables, and a chi-square or Fisher exact test was used for categorical variables to determine statistical significance between the 2 groups.Results:We identified 128 patients who met our inclusion criteria. One hundred and two feet in 97 patients underwent arthrodesis with a noncontoured, stainless steel 1/3 tubular plate (group 1) and 26 feet in 21 patients with a precontoured, locking plate (group 2). The patients presented with a variety of inflammatory and noninflammatory preoperative diagnoses. The overall union rate, complication rate, time to radiographic healing, MTP angle, and patient-reported visual analog scale (VAS) score were similar between the 2 groups. Clinical time to healing was more rapid in the noncontoured group (3.7 months vs 4.8 degrees in precontoured) (P = .02). The radiographically measured proximal phalanx to floor angle was significantly decreased in noncontoured patients (2.6 degrees vs 4.6 degrees in precontoured, P = .04).In patients who had a diagnosis of an inflammatory arthropathy, the union rate fell to 84.3% (27/32) in the noncontoured group and 87.5% (7/8) in the precontoured group, and time to radiographic as well as clinical union increased in both groups. When patients with inflammatory arthropathies were compared with noninflammatory patients within groups, it was found that the time to both clinical and radiographic union was significantly longer in the noncontoured group for those with an inflammatory arthropathy (P = .0052, P = .022). For the precontoured group, these values were not statistically significant (P = .089, P = .43). Additionally, the cost of the noncontoured implants was significantly less than that of the precontoured implants.Conclusion:In this study, clinical time to healing of primary first MTP fusion with dorsal plate and screw constructs was improved with the use of noncontoured plates. However, other clinical indicators such as pain, complication rate, MTP angle, and VAS score did not differ between groups. Noncontoured plates are less expensive, and thus the decision to use precontoured plates routinely should be made cautiously. However, in the presence of inflammatory arthropathy, the use of precontoured plates may be justified given that the use of these plates in the inflammatory group resulted in improved radiographic and clinical union.Level of Evidence:Level III, comparative series.

A new mineral krasheninnikovite, ideally KNa2CaMg(SO4)3F, is found in the sublimates of an active fumarole at the Second scoria cone of the Northern Breakthrough of the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption, Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka, Russia. It is associated with tenorite, thenardite, hematite, euchlorine, blödite, vergasovaite, and fluorophlogopite. Krasheninnikovite forms long-prismatic to acicular crystals up to 3 mm long and up to 20 μm thick. The crystals are combined in sheaf-like, radiating or open-work matted aggregates forming nests up to several cm3or crusts. Krasheninnikovite is transparent, colorless in individuals and white in aggregates. The luster is vitreous. The mineral is brittle; the thinnest needles are flexible and elastic. The Mohs hardness is 2½-3. Cleavage was not observed. Dmeasis 2.68(1), Dcalcis 2.67 g/cm3. Krasheninnikovite is optically uniaxial (-), ω = 1.500(2), ε = 1.492(2). The IR spectrum is unique. The chemical composition (wt%, electron microprobe data) is: Na2O 15.48, K2O 6.92, CaO 11.51, MgO 9.25, MnO 0.15, FeO 0.04, Al2O30.23, SO353.51, F 3.22, Cl 0.16, -O=(F,Cl)2-1.39, total 99.08. The empirical formula, calculated on the basis of 13 (O+F+Cl) apfu, is: K0.67Na2.27Ca0.93Mn0.01Mg1.04Al0.02(SO4)3.04F0.76Cl0.02O0.06. Krasheninnikovite is hexagonal, space group P63/mcm, a = 16.6682(2), c = 6.9007(1) Å, V = 1660.36(4) Å3, Z = 6. The strongest reflections of the X-ray powder pattern [d, Å I(hkl)] are: 4.286 22(121); 3.613 24(040); 3.571 17(221); 3.467 42(131); 3.454 43(002); 3.153 100(140), 3.116 22(022), 2.660 39(222), 2.085 17(440). The crystal structure was solved on a single crystal and refined on a powder sample by the Rietveld method, Rwp= 0.0485. The krasheninnikovite structure is unique. It is based upon a heteropolyhedral pseudoframework consisting of CaO6octahedra, MgO5F octahedra, and SO4tetrahedra; K and Na cations are located in cavities. Krasheninnikovite is named in honor of the Russian geographer, ethnographer, and naturalist S.P. Krasheninnikov (1711-1755), one of the first scientists who researched Kamchatka. The type specimen is deposited in the Fersman Mineralogical Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow.

Although intuitive and predicted by the broaden-and-build theory of positive emotions, previous research has not seriously tested the idea that positive moods can cause sociability. The authors developed a new measure to assess preferences for social (vs. nonsocial) situations, carefully controlling for the fact that social situations are, on average, also more pleasant. Across two additional experiments (combined n= 237), the authors induced positive, negative, and neutral moods with film clips (between-subjects) and found that participants in the positive conditions felt more social (adjective ratings) and indicated stronger preferences for social situations (on the new measure), compared to those in both negative and neutral conditions. Beyond filling an important gap in the empirical record, the authors also explore the implications of this finding for broaden-and-build theory and a large literature linking trait extraversion with happiness.

Although secondary trauma has been assessed in various groups of mental health professionals, few studies, to date, have examined secondary trauma among attorneys exposed to clients’ traumatic experiences. This study examined indicators of secondary trauma among attorneys (N= 238) and their administrative support staff (N= 109) in the Wisconsin State Public Defender Office. Attorney participants demonstrated significantly higher levels of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, depression, secondary traumatic stress, burnout, and functional impairment compared with the administrative support staff. This difference was mediated by attorneys’ longer work hours and greater contact with clients who had experienced or had been directly involved with trauma. Sex, age, years on the job, office size, and personal history of trauma did not predict symptoms. These findings suggest a need to support attorneys experiencing these symptoms and to address high workloads as well as the intensity of contact with trauma-exposed clients.

Tazieffite, ideally Pb20Cd2(As,Bi)22S50Cl10, is a new mineral from the high-temperature fumaroles of the Mutnovsky volcano, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russian Federation. It occurs as tiny, slender, needleshaped crystals, up to 400 μm long and 10 μm across, generally forming fibrous aggregates. Tazieffite is closely associated with greenockite, galena, mutnovskite, kudriavite, and Cd-rich cannizzarite. Other minerals spatially associated are pyrite, anhydrite, and cristobalite. Tazieffite is silvery-gray in color, occasionally with a magenta tint when it forms aggregates of extremely fine needles. It has a black streak and metallic luster. In plane-polarized incident light, tazieffite is weakly bireflectant and weakly pleochroic from dark gray to a blue-gray. Between crossed polars, the mineral is weakly anisotropic, without characteristic rotation tints. Reflectance percentages measured in air (Rminand Rmax) for a single grain are 33.9, 34.1 (471.1 nm), 32.8, 33.0 (548.3 nm), 32.4, 32.6 (586.6 nm), and 30.9, 31.1 (652.3 nm), respectively. Electron microprobe analyses yield the following ranges of concentrations: Pb 41.88-44.14 (avg. 42.90), Cd 0.87-1.16 (avg. 1.03), Sn 0.31-0.69 (avg. 0.48), Bi 20.43-22.94 (avg. 21.90), As 8.64-10.73 (avg. 9.66), S 16.10-17.48 (avg. 16.58), Se 0.82-1.28 (avg. 1.04), Cl 2.39-2.77 (avg. 2.63), Br 0.09-0.15 (avg. 0.12), I 0.27-0.58 (avg. 0.42). The empirical chemical formula, calculated on the basis of 44 cations, is Pb20.06(Cd0.89Sn0.39In0.02)Σ1.30(As12.49Bi10.15)Σ22.64(S50.08Se1.28)Σ51.36(Cl7.18I0.32Br0.15)Σ7.65. Tazieffite is closely related to the halogen-sulfosalt vurroite, Pb20Sn2Bi22S54Cl6, both from a chemical and structural point of view. It represents the (Cd,As)-dominant of vurroite, according to the coupled heterovalent substitution Sn4++ 2S2-→ Cd2++ 2Cl-. The crystal structure of tazieffite was refined in the space group C2/c to R = 0.0370 for 4271 reflections with I > 2σ(I). Unit-cell parameters are a = 8.3520(17), b = 45.5920(92), c = 27.2610(55) Å, β = 98.84(3)°, with V = 10257(4) Å3, and Z = 4. The structure of tazieffite consists of lozenge-shaped composite rods made of coordination polyhedra of Pb around an octahedrally coordinated (Cd,Sn,Pb) position, interconnected into layers parallel to (010). These layers are separated by ribbons of As and Bi in distorted octahedral coordination. The ribbons form wavy, discontinuous double layers of the PbS archetype. Lone electron pairs of As and Bi are accommodated in the central portions of the PbS-like layers. The possibility that small amounts of NH4+are incorporated in the crystal structure of tazieffite is discussed. The name of this new mineral species (IMA 2008-012) honors Haroun Tazieff (Warszawa, May 11, 1914-Paris, February 6, 1998), famous Belgian/French volcanologist, who was a pioneer in the field study of volcanoes and devoted his life to the study of volcanic gases.

As organizations become increasingly reliant on distributive technologies, the processes that underpin the effective functioning of employees in virtual environments require systematic examination. This article provides a theoretical framework for studying personality, emotion and judgment in virtual environments. The communication media characteristics, social context, and individual traits and states are presented to portray the dynamic nature of judgment formation in a virtual environment. We argue that media characteristics, combined with personality, motivation and emergent social contexts serve to shape emotions and resultant judgments. By integrating the Information Systems (IS) and Organizational Behavior/Psychology literatures, we chart a course for research examining personality, emotion and judgments, with implications for any distributed organization.

Best Case/Worst Case (BC/WC) is a communication tool designed to promote shared decision-making for high-risk procedures near the end of life. This study aimed to increase scalability of a BC/WC training program and measure its impact on surgeon confidence in and perceived importance of the methodology.

Recoil carbon ions with kinetic energy of 400 ?E ?900keV were detected by silicon strip detectors installed at 90?with respect to the beam. The absolute polarization is given by normalizing against another polarimeter implemented at RHIC, namely a polarized hydrogen gas jet polarimeter. In this report, the details of polarization measurements, data analysis, and systematic uncertainties are discussed based on the data taken during ?(s)=200GeV operation of Run05 at RHIC.

This article presents a case report of using s-adenosylmethionine in treating depression in a woman with developmental disabilities. Information about depression is given. S-adenosylmethionine can lead to normalization of increased liver enzymes and depression remission. The medical history of the patient is presented. S-adenosylmethionine is the principle methyl-group donor in multiple biological systems.
