Aims. The aim of this work is to shed some light on the problem of the formation of carbon stars of R-type from a detailed study of their chemical composition.

Saphenous eversion Hickman®catheter insertion can provide an alternative technique for venous access in patients in whom upper body access is not feasible. The technique is simple and obviates many of the complications of upper body permanent venous access catheter insertion. Further experience is required to assess whether this technique can become one of the standard Hickman®insertion techniques.

We present a gravity model of the crustal structure in southern Mexico based on interpretation of a detailed marine gravity profile perpendicularly across the Middle America Trench offshore from Acapulco, and a regional gravity transect extending into continental Mexico across the Sierra Madre del Sur, the central sector of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, the Sierra Madre Oriental, the Coastal Plain, and into the Gulf of Mexico. The elastic thickness of the Cocos lithospheric plate was found to be 30km. In agreement with a previous seismic refraction study, no major differences in crustal structure were observed on both sides of the O’Gorman Fracture Zone. The gravity high seaward of the trench is interpreted as due to the incipient flexure and crustal thinning. The gravity low at the axis of the trench is explained by the increase in water depth and the existence of low-density accreted or continental-derived sediments (2.25 and 2.40g/cm3). A gravity high of 50mGal extending about 100km landward is interpreted as caused by local shoaling of the Moho. The crust attains a thickness of 42km under the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt but thins beneath the Coastal Plain and the continental slope of the Gulf of Mexico. Gravity highs around the Sierra de Tamaulipas are interpreted in terms of relief of the lower–upper crustal interface, implying a shallow basement.

Context.Binary systems experiencing one or two common envelope episodes during the red giant branch or the Hertzsprung gap phases can produce a single star, evolving along the Hayashi track, as a final outcome. Even if these objects are expected to be very common in nature, a proper description of their evolution and physical properties is still missing. Moreover, this scenario (red giant merging scenario) has been invoked as the progenitor systems of early-R stars, by assuming that the physical conditions developed as a consequence of the cores merging could produce the mixing into the convective envelope of fresh carbon that was synthesized during the He-flash.
