As economy grows up, the demands for the transportation information are increasing day by day. Most drivers need real time vehicle information to avoid bad road conditions and traffic accident area. This paper constructs a vehicle information system (VIS), which combines the electronic map and a real time vehicle information database. The database collects the instant road conditions from each car through the GPRS communication. In addition, the VIS offers the real-time road information and trouble information to the drivers. The drivers can also inquire the road conditions through a GPRS cell-phone or PDA before driving. The VIS will offer immediately the driver real-time route information and driving speeds. The proposed system divides into two parts, client and server. The client that is installed on each car collects the vehicle information via the GPS receiver and the trouble codes via OBD. Then, the information collected by the client will be transferred to the server through the GPRS. In the server side, it receives the data and constructs a database to offer the real time vehicle information. Therefore, the proposed system can provide drivers real time road information to improve the safety and the convenience when driving. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
