5. Listeria monocytogenes Inoculation Protects Mice against Blood-Stage Plasmodium yoelii Infection.

Abstract

Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) has been used as the adjuvant or vector for tumor and viral vaccine for its capability of eliciting all aspects of cell-mediated immunity including T cell activation and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ ) production. These effector components play critical roles in the protection against Plasmodium infection in both human malaria and mouse models. Therefore, immune response induced by Lm infection may benefit the defense against malaria. To test this hypothesis, we employed blood-stage Plasmodium yoelii (PyL) infected mice and challenged them with Lm. C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice that are sensitive to PyL infection were used in experiments. These two strains are resistant and sensitive, respectively, to Lm infection. The outcomes of double infection with PyL and Lm and the changes of immune response were investigated. We found that live Lm inoculation inhibited PyL multiplication in both C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice. Lm inoculation increased production of IFN-γ , infiltration of CD11b-positive macrophages and generation of nitric oxide in the spleen of C57BL/6 mice at day 5 after parasite infection. Both CD4- and CD8- positive T cells contributed to IFN-γ production induced by Lm inoculation in PyL-infected mice. The protective effect of Lm against PyL infection depended on the viability of the bacteria. Live Lm, rather than heat-killed Lm, stimulated early IFN-γ production which provided essential cytokine environment for the development of Th1 response in PyL-infected mice. Our data show for the first time that Lm inoculation has protective effect against blood-stage murine malaria, which provides a new clue for enhancing anti- Plasmodium immunity. 8. Prevalence and characteristics of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder in female prisoners in China.

Abstract

Objective: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its relationship with a range of traumatic events have previously been documented within various traumatized groups in Western countries. In the present study, the authors investigated the relationship between the frequency and type of traumatic events and the prevalence of PTSD among female prisoners in China. Method: A structured psychiatric interview, the self-report Traumatic Life Events Questionnaire, and Symptom Checklist-90-Revised were administered to a subset of 471 female members who were randomly selected from Hunan female prison, China. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) diagnoses were assigned by consensus after the interviews were evaluated by independent raters. Results: The prevalences of lifetime and current PTSD were 15.9% (n = 75) and 10.6% (n = 50), and 82% (n = 386) of the subjects had experienced at least 1 traumatic event. The whole sample was divided into 2 groups according to age: the younger group (age ≤ 25 years) and the older group (age >25 years). The most predictive factor for lifetime PTSD among the younger age group was the experience of sudden death of a close friend or a loved one, childhood physical abuse, intimate partner abuse, and sexual abuse before the age of 13 years by someone at least 5 years older. For the older group, the most predictive factors were a history of motor traffic accident, sudden death of a close friend or a loved one, severe assault by acquaintance or stranger, witness to family violence, having experienced more than 5 traumatic events, intimate partner abuse, and sexual abuse before the age of 13 years by someone at least 5 years older. Those females with PTSD tended to demonstrate higher levels of anger/hostility or interpersonal sensitivity than those without either partial or full diagnosis. Conclusions: In this sample of female prisoners in China, although exposure to traumatic events was common and the rate is nearly as high as that in western countries, the prevalences of lifetime and current PTSD were relatively lower. Moreover, the prevalence of current PTSD among younger prisoners was significantly higher than that among older prisoners. The risk of developing lifetime PTSD was significantly greater only for older prisoners with a history of more than 5 traumatic events, whereas the types of specific traumatic events with the risk of developing lifetime PTSD among younger prisoners were similar to that among older prisoners. Administering specialized treatments for anger dyscontrol and interpersonal sensitivity may be useful for rehabilitation and reform of female prisoners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

9. Review of the Oriental Leafhopper Genus Lampridius (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae), with Description of a Related New Genus.

Abstract

The leafhopper genus Lampridius Distant, 1918 (type species: L. spectabilis Distant, 1918) is redescribed, and a second species, L. cuspidatus sp. nov. (Thailand: Loei), is described. A related new genus Paralampridius gen. nov. and four new species are described: P mimicus sp. nov. (China: Guangdong, Hainan), P rotundatus sp. nov. (Thailand: Loei), P. sinuatus sp. nov. (Thailand: Loei, Suphanburi, Petchaburi), and P. truncatus sp. nov. (Thailand: Chaiyaphum, Ubon Ratchathani). Both genera are tentatively included in the tribe Opsiini, although only Lampridius has paired aedeagal shafts with separate gonopores. All six species are illustrated, and a key is provided for their identification. Problems with the current tribal classification are discussed in light of the present discovery of closely related species that show variation in characters previously assumed to be stable at the tribal level in the subfamily Deltocephalinae. 10. A Review of the Leafhopper Genus Hishimonoides Ishihara (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae).

Abstract

Here, we review the species of the Old World leafhopper genus Hishimonoides Ishihara. Twelve species, including two new species, are recognized in the genus: H. arbudae Viraktamath et al. (India), H. aurifascialis Kuoh (China), H. bougainvilleae Viraktamath et al. (India, China), H. chinensis Anufriev (China), H. curvatus sp. nov. (China: Guangxi), H. dentimarginus Li and Zhang (China), H. miaolingensis Li and Zhang (China), H. orientalis Mahmood (Bangladesh, India), H. recurvatis Li (China), H. sellatiformis Ishihara (China, Japan), H. spinosus Viraktamath et al. (India) and H. similis sp. nov. (China: Zhejiang, Gansu, Hunan). The type species and all known species from China are redescribed. One new synonym is revealed, Hishimonoides Iaterosporeus Li and Zhang, 2005, a junior synonym of Hishimonoides chinensis Anufriev, 1970. 11. A Review of the Leafhopper Genus Scaphotettix Matsumura (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae), with Description of a New Genus.

Abstract

The leafhopper genus Scaphotettix Matsumura is redescribed, and three new species are described and illustrated: S. striatus Dai and Zhang, sp. nov. from Java (on bamboo) and China; S. bispinosus Dai and Zhang, sp. nov from China; and S. pectinatus Dai and Zhang, sp. nov. from Vietnam. Most other species of Scaphotettix were re-examined and found to belong to a new genus also described herein, Scaphomonus Viraktamath, gen. nov.. The new genus is compared with the superficially similar Melanetettix Knight and Fletcher, Scaphodhara Viraktamath and Mohan, and Scaphoideus Uhler and a new species, Scaphomonus vateriae Viraktamath, sp. nov. from India, is described and illustrated. In addition, the following new combinations are proposed (all previously placed in Scaphotettix): Scaphomonus agumbensis (Viraktamath and Mohan) comb. nov.; 5. arcuatus (Viraktamath and Mohan) comb. nov.; S. freytagi (Viraktamath and Mohan) comb. nov.; S. indicus (Distant) comb. nov.; S. longistylus (Li and Wang) comb. nov.; S. malnadicus (Viraktamath and Mohan) comb. nov.; S. quadrifidus (Viraktamath and Mohan) comb. nov.; S. redundans (Distant) comb. nov.; and S. splinterus (Li and Wang) comb. nov. Three species, Scaphotettix fanjingensis Li and Wang, Scaphotettix redstripeus Li and Wang, and Scaphotettix slenderus Li and Wang, do not belong to the genus Scaphotettix and are not treated further. Abstract

The Oriental 'fly-like' leafhoppers of the Doda group are reviewed and a key is given for their separation. Two new genera and two new species are described: Pseudododa gen. n. (with type species R orientalis sp. n.) and Aculescutellaris gen. n. (with type species A. hirtellus sp. n.). The variation within the former species is documented and illustrated, and the special mineral uptake behavior ('mud-puddling') of this genus and other Cicadellidae is reviewed. 13. A Taxonomic Study on the Leafhopper Genus Scaphoidella Vilbaste (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae) from China.

Abstract

All six species of the leafhopper genus Scaphoidella Vilbaste from China are reviewed. Among them, two new species, S. undosa sp. nov. and S. acaudata sp. nov., are described; two new combinations, Scaphoide. unihamata (Li et Kuoh) comb. nov. and Scaphoidella wideaedeaga (Wang et Li) comb. nov. are proposed; and two new synonyms are revealed, Scaphoideus inermis Cai et He (2001) syn. nov. as a junior synonym of Scaphoidella unihamata (Li et Kuoh 1993) and Scaphoideus multipunctus Li et Dai (2004) syn. nov. as a junior synonym of Scaphoidella stenopaea Anufriev (1977).
