Excessive uptake of nitrite has been proven to be detrimental to the ecological system and human health. Hence, there is a rising requirement for constructing effective electrochemical sensors to precisely monitor the level of nitrite. In this work, NiFe-layered double hydroxide nanosheet arrays (NiFe-LDH NSAs) have been successfully fabricated on a carbon cloth (CC) substrate via a facile one-pot hydrothermal route. By integrating the collective merits of macroporous CC and NiFe-LDH NSAs such as superior electrical conductivity, striking synergistic effect between the dual active components, enlarged electrochemically active surface area, unique three-dimensional hierarchical porous network characteristics, and fast charge transport and ion diffusion, the proposed NiFe-LDH NSAs/CC architecture can be served as a self-supporting sensor toward nitrite detection. As a consequence, the resulting NiFe-LDH NSAs/CC electrode demonstrates superior nitrite sensing characteristics, accompanied by broad linear range (5–1000 μM), quick response rate (ca. 3 s), ultralow detection limit (0.02 μM), and high sensitivity (803.6 μA·mM–1·cm–2). Meanwhile, the electrochemical sensor possesses timeless stability, good reproducibility, and strong anti-interference feature. Importantly, the resulting sensor can determine nitrite level in tap and lake water with high recoveries, suggesting its feasibility for practical applications. These findings show that the obtained NiFe-LDH NSAs/CC electrode holds great prospect in highly sensitive and specific detection of nitrite.

Few studies have examined the roles of dorsal penile nerve block (DPNB) and penile ring block (PRB) in surgery of inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP) placement. We sought to compare the postoperative pain outcomes of two different medications used in DPNB plus PRB. We thus carried out a prospective study of patients with erectile dysfunction who underwent “de novo” IPP placement between January 2013 and June 2013. Patients were divided to one of three groups: 1-DPNB plus PRB with bupivacaine injection; 2-DPNB plus PRB with ropivacaine injection and, 3-Control group without DPNB or PRB injection. Postoperative pain score and pain medication usage were recorded 2 h postoperatively, and every 24 h, for a week. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was used as pain scale measurement. A total of 131 patients were included in this study: 40 to bupivacaine, 47 to ropivacaine, and the rest were controls. Two hours postoperatively, mean VAS was significantly different (p< 0.0001) between medicated patients and the control group, however, no significant differences were observed between medication groups. Mean VAS was not significantly different among the groups from post-surgical day 2 thru 7. In conclusion, DPNB plus PRB during IPP provided effective analgesia in the immediate post-operative recovery.

Eutrophication of water bodies caused by the excessive phosphate discharge has constituted a serious threat on a global scale. It is imperative to exploit new advanced materials featuring abundant binding sites and high affinity to achieve highly efficient and specific capture of phosphate from polluted waters. Herein, water stable Zr-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs, UiO-66) with rational structural design and size modulation have been successfully synthesized based on a simple solvothermal method for effective phosphate remediation. Impressively, the size of the resulting UiO-66 particles can be effectively adjusted by simply altering reaction time and the amount of acetic acid with the purpose of understanding the crucial effect of structural design on the phosphate capture performance. Representatively, UiO-66 particles with small size demonstrates 415 mg/g of phosphate uptake capacity, outperforming most of the previously reported phosphate adsorbents. Meanwhile, the developed absorbents can rapidly reduce highly concentrated phosphate to below the permitted level in drinking water within a few minutes. More significantly, the current absorbents display remarkable phosphate sorption selectivity against the common interfering ions, which can be attributed to strong affinity between Zr–OH groups in UiO-66 and phosphate species. Furthermore, the spent UiO-66 particles can be readily regenerated and reused for multiple sorption–desorption cycles without obvious decrease in removal performance, rendering them promising sustainable materials. Hence, the developed UiO-66 adsorbents hold significant prospects for phosphate sequestration to mitigate the increasingly eutrophic problems.

Safety of drug use during pregnancy attracts attentions from clinicians, pregnant woman, and even the total society. However, the studies about medication use during pregnancy and the followed birth defects (BDs) are rare in Chinese. To study condition about medication use during pregnancy and the followed BDs in Hunan province of China, here a cross-sectional study was carried out. All women using medication during pregnancy and delivering fetuses with BDs in Hunan province, China, during 2016 to 2019 were employed in this study. The descriptive analysis was carried out with Excel 2010, and the data analyses were performed by using Chi-Squared test in SPSS 16.0. After filtering, a total of 752 cases were included. In these fetuses, the males are more than females (P < .05). The severe BDs, leading to death or uncorrectable lifelong deformity, were observed for 346 times, and the other (minor) BDs were observed for 593 times. The most used drugs, categorized into pregnancy C, D, or X degrees by food and drug administration (FDA) or pharmaceutical manufacturers, mainly included anti-hyperthyroidism drugs, anti-epilepsy drugs, preventing miscarriage drugs, etc. This population-based data highlight the potential high risks for BDs from the aspect of drug use during pregnancy in Hunan province of China, and drugs with more safety, less kinds, and lower doses should be the better choice for pregnant women.

Indocyanine green (ICG) with near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence absorption is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for clinical applications in angiography, blood flow evaluation, and liver function assessment. It has strong optical absorption in the NIR region, where light can penetrate deepest into biological tissue. We sought to review its value in guiding prostate cancer treatment.

The purpose of the study was to assess the clinical efficacy and safety of a combined perfusion suction platform with pressure feedback control function and an ureteroscopic suction sheath that can measure the ureteropelvic pressure in implementing lithotripsies.

To describe a novel technique of transurethral seminal vesiculoscopy using a pediatric ureteroscope in the diagnosis and management of persistent hematospermia, a retrospective study was carried out for 20 patients with recurrent hematospermia whom we evaluated and treated using a 6–7.5F (6F front end and 7.5F rear end) pediatric ureteroscope from August 2009 to September 2013. For the 20 patients, the age ranges from 25 to 48 years with a mean age of 36 years. The duration of the hematospermia ranges from 6 to 48 months with a mean duration of 18 months. Transurethral seminal vesiculoscopy was successfully performed in the 20 cases and the mean operative time was 35 min (ranges from 25 to 90 min). Among the 20 patients, 11 patients were found to have seminal vesiculitis, five were with seminal vesicle stone, one was with prostatic utricle stone, one was with prostate cyst, and one was with ejaculatory duct obstruction. The mean follow-up period was 7 months (ranged from 6 to 12 months). Hematospermia in 19 cases disappeared after the surgery and only in one patient the hematospermia recurred 6 months after the surgery. The cure rate was 95%. This study indicated that transurethral seminal vesiculoscopy could be performed easily using a semirigid pediatric ureteroscope with few complications and is an effective therapeutic approach for persistent hematospermia.
