The article describes the efforts undertaken by a community-based middle school in Waco, Texas in building family legacies and in transforming its surrounding community through academic enrichment for students and English as a Second Language for their parents. Based from research and experience, children share the legacy of their parents' educational and economic achievements. The importance of the family in education has led to the creation of a multidimensional family literacy program at César Chévez Middle School (CCMS). In 2001, the school was established as a neighborhood school. The Learning English Among Friends was launched targeting parents with children enrolled at CCMS. Interest on the program has increased leading to the participation of community residents.
