In this work, we describe a procedure for synthesizing racetrack resonators with large quality factors and apply it to realize a multi-channel wavelength-selective switch (WSS) on a silicon photonic chip. We first determine the contribution of each component primitive to propagation loss in a racetrack resonator and use this data to develop a model for the frequency response of arbitrary order, coupled-racetrack channel dropping filters. We design second-order racetrack filters based on this model and cascade multiple such filters to form a 1×7 WSS. We find good agreement between our model and device performance with second-order racetrack that have $\approx$ 1 dB of drop-port loss, $\approx$ 2 GHz FWHM linewidth, and low optical crosstalk due to the quick filter roll-off of $\approx$ 5.3 dB $/$ GHz. Using a control algorithm, we show three-channel operation of our WSS with a channel spacing of only 10 GHz. Owing to the high quality factor and quick roll-off of our filter design, adjacent channel crosstalk is measured to be $< $ $-$25 dB for channels spaced on a 10 GHz grid. As a further demonstration, we use five of seven WSS channels to perform a demultiplexing operation on both an 8 GHz and a 10 GHz grid. These results suggest that a low-loss WSS with fine channel resolution can be realized in a scalable manner using the silicon photonics platform.

Frequency-bin qubits possess unique synergies with wavelength-multiplexed lightwave communications, suggesting valuable opportunities for quantum networking with the existing fiber-optic infrastructure. Although the coherent manipulation of frequency-bin states requires highly controllable multi-spectral-mode interference, the quantum frequency processor (QFP) provides a scalable path for gate synthesis leveraging standard telecom components. Here we summarize the state of the art in experimental QFP characterization. Distinguishing between physically motivated “open box” approaches that treat the QFP as a multiport interferometer, and “black box” approaches that view the QFP as a general quantum operation, we highlight the assumptions and results of multiple techniques, including quantum process tomography of a tunable beamsplitter—to our knowledge the first full process tomography of any frequency-bin operation. Our findings should inform future characterization efforts as the QFP increasingly moves beyond proof-of-principle tabletop demonstrations toward integrated devices and deployed quantum networking experiments.

We demonstrate a Bell state analyzer that operates directly on frequency mismatch. Based on electro-optic modulators and Fourier-transform pulse shapers, our quantum frequency processor design implements interleaved Hadamard gates in discrete frequency modes. Experimental tests on entangled-photon inputs reveal fidelities of ∼98% for discriminating between the |Ψ^+? and |Ψ^−? frequency-bin Bell states. Our approach resolves the tension between wavelength-multiplexed state transport and high-fidelity Bell state measurements, which typically require spectral indistinguishability.

Spectral and temporal mode matching are required for the efficient interaction of photons and quantum memories. In our previous work [Opt. Lett.45, 5688 (2020).10.1364/OL.404891], we proposed a new route to spectrally compress broadband photons to achieve spectral mode matching with narrowband memories, using a linear, time-variant optical cavity based on rapid switching of input coupling. In this work, we extend our approach to attain temporal mode matching as well by exploiting the time variation of output coupling of the cavity. We numerically analyze the mode matching and loss performance of our time-varying cavity and present a possible implementation in integrated photonics.

Flexible grid wavelength division multiplexing is a powerful tool in lightwave communications to maximize spectral efficiency. In the emerging field of quantum networking, the need for effective resource provisioning is particularly acute, given the generally lower power levels, higher sensitivity to loss, and inapplicability of optical detection and retransmission. In this letter, we leverage flex grid technology to demonstrate reconfigurable distribution of quantum entanglement in a four-user tabletop network. By adaptively partitioning bandwidth with a single wavelength-selective switch, we successfully equalize two-party coincidence rates that initially differ by over two orders of magnitude. Our scalable approach introduces loss that is fixed with the number of users, offering a practical path for the establishment and management of quality-of-service guarantees in large quantum networks.

Spectral compression will be needed for efficient interfacing of broadband photons with narrowband quantum memories for applications in quantum information and networking. In this Letter, we propose spectral compression via a time-varying, linear optical cavity. Unlike other recent works on time-varying cavities based on modulation of the intracavity phase, our spectral compression concept is based on rapid switching of coupling into the cavity. We analyze spectral compression performance metrics as a function of mirror reflectivity, cavity loss, and switching speed and discuss potential implementation in integrated photonics.

Single solitons are a special limit of more general waveforms commonly referred to as cnoidal waves or Turing rolls. We theoretically and computationally investigate the stability and accessibility of cnoidal waves in microresonators. We show that they are robust and, in contrast to single solitons, can be easily and deterministically accessed in most cases. Their bandwidth can be comparable to single solitons, in which limit they are effectively a periodic train of solitons and correspond to a frequency comb with increased power. We comprehensively explore the three-dimensional parameter space that consists of detuning, pump amplitude, and mode circumference in order to determine where stable solutions exist. To carry out this task, we use a unique set of computational tools based on dynamical system theory that allow us to rapidly and accurately determine the stable region for each cnoidal wave periodicity and to find the instability mechanisms and their time scales. Finally, we focus on the soliton limit, and we show that the stable region for single solitons almost completely overlaps the stable region for both continuous waves and several higher-periodicity cnoidal waves that are effectively multiple soliton trains. This result explains in part why it is difficult to access single solitons deterministically.

Phase modulation has emerged as a technique to create and manipulate high-dimensional frequency-bin entanglement. A necessary step to extending this technique to depolarized channels, such as those in a quantum networking environment, is the ability to perform phase modulation independent of photon polarization. This is also necessary to harness hyperentanglement in the polarization and frequency degrees of freedom for operations such as Bell state discrimination. However, practical phase modulators are generally sensitive to the polarization of light, and this makes them unsuited to such applications. We overcome this limitation by implementing a polarization diversity scheme to measure frequency-bin entanglement for arbitrary orientations of co- and cross-polarized time-energy entangled photon pairs.

We report phase retrieval of a single-soliton Kerr comb using electric field cross-correlation implemented via dual-comb interferometry. The phase profile of the Kerr comb is acquired through the heterodyne beat between the Kerr comb and an electro-optic comb with a pre-characterized phase profile. The soliton Kerr comb has a nearly flat phase profile, and the pump line is observed to show a phase offset which depends on the pumping parameters. The experimental results are in agreement with numerical simulations.

A key challenge for quantum science and technology is to realize large-scale, precisely controllable, practical systems for non-classical secured communications, metrology and, ultimately, meaningful quantum simulation and computation. Optical frequency combs represent a powerful approach towards this goal, as they provide a very high number of temporal and frequency modes that can result in large-scale quantum systems. The generation and control of quantum optical frequency combs will enable a unique, practical and scalable framework for quantum signal and information processing. Here, we review recent progress on the realization of energy–time entangled optical frequency combs and discuss how photonic integration and the use of fibre-optic telecommunications components can enable quantum state control with new functionalities, yielding unprecedented capability.

Frequency-bin quantum information encoding offers an intriguing synergy with classical optical networks, with the ability to support many qubits in a single fiber. Yet, coherent quantum frequency operations prove extremely challenging due to the difficulties in mixing frequencies arbitrarily and with low noise. In this paper, we address such challenges and implement distinct quantum gates in parallel on two entangled frequency-bin qubits in the same optical fiber. Our basic quantum operation controls the spectral overlap between adjacent spectral bins, allowing us to observe frequency-bin Hong–Ou–Mandel interference with a visibility of 0.971±0.007. By integrating this tunability with frequency parallelization, we synthesize independent gates on entangled qubits and flip their spectral correlations, allowing us to observe strong violation of the separability bound. Our realization of closed, user-defined gates on frequency-bin qubits in parallel should find application in the development of fiber-compatible quantum information processing and quantum networks.

Fields propagating through a highly scattering material will be distorted in both space (intensity speckles) and time (spectral and temporal speckles), inhibiting tasks such as imaging and communication in both the optical and radio frequency regions. In optics, research thus far has demonstrated spatial focusing, image transmission, and short pulse delivery through bulk scattering materials and multimode fibers by taking advantage of spatial wavefront-shaping techniques. Here, we exploit spectral phase shaping for reference-free characterization of spectral and temporal speckle, and space–time focusing of broadband ultrafast pulses distorted by modal dispersion in a multimode fiber. We show that temporal speckle fields at different multimode fiber output locations are uncorrelated and demonstrate the ability to focus a short pulse at a specific output spatial location, while keeping the field at other output locations noise-like, offering opportunities to expand multimode fiber imaging and communication capacity.

The Hong–Ou–Mandel (HOM) interference is one of the most fundamental quantum-mechanical effects that reveal a nonclassical behavior of single photons. Two identical photons that are incident on the input ports of an unbiased beam splitter always exit the beam splitter together from the same output port, an effect referred to as photon bunching. In this Letter, we utilize a single electro-optic phase modulator as a probabilistic frequency beam splitter, which we exploit to observe HOM interference between two photons that are in different spectral modes, yet are identical in other characteristics. Our approach enables linear optical quantum information processing protocols using the frequency degree of freedom in photons such as quantum computing techniques with linear optics.

Frequency-to-time mapping (FTM) is a technique used to mirror the spectral shape of an optical waveform in the time domain. The regular approach, based on the far-field condition, requires large amounts of dispersion for successful mapping. However, when the far-field condition is insurmountable for achieving a desired temporal profile, another technique, termed near-field FTM, can be employed to assist with the mapping. For the first time, we demonstrate a shaper-assisted near-field FTM using entangled photon pairs. By pre-modifying the two-photon spectral amplitude and phase before propagating the photon pairs through dispersion, we can achieve arbitrary temporal correlations in the near-field region.

A shaped doublet pump pulse is proposed for a simultaneous octave-spanning soliton Kerr frequency comb generation and second-harmonic conversion in a single microresonator. The temporal soliton in the cavity is trapped atop a doublet-pulse pedestal, resulting in a greatly expanded soliton region compared to that with a general Gaussian pulse pump. The possibility of single-microresonator comb self-referencing in a single silicon nitride microring that can facilitate compact on-chip optical clocks is demonstrated via simulation.

Soliton mode-locking in microresonators enables chip-scale coherent optical frequency comb generation. However, it usually leads to multi-soliton combs with a structured spectrum. Instead, the smooth spectrum of a single soliton is favored for applications. Here, we introduce, experimentally and numerically, a passive mechanism for single temporal soliton formation arising from spatial mode-interaction in microresonators. Deterministic single soliton generation is observed for microresonators with strong mode-interaction in experiments and simulations. Further simulations demonstrate that the soliton number is reduced to one in order to lower the nonlinear loss into mode-interaction induced Cherenkov radiation (CR). Our results give important insights into soliton–CR interaction in cavities.

We investigate, numerically and experimentally, the effect of thermo-optical (TO) chaos on soliton generation dynamics in microresonators. Numerical simulations that include the thermal dynamics show that the generated solitons can either survive or annihilate when the pump laser is scanned from blue to red and then stop at a fixed wavelength; the outcome is stochastic and is strongly related to the number of solitons generated. The random fluctuations of the cavity resonance occurring under TO chaos are also found to trigger delayed spontaneous soliton generation after the laser scan ends, which could enable soliton excitation with slow laser tuning speed. Stochastic soliton annihilation/survival, as well as delayed spontaneous soliton generation, is observed experimentally in a silicon-nitride microresonator.

Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) is a powerful, label-free imaging technique that holds significant potential for medical imaging. To allow chemical specificity and minimize spectral distortion in the imaging of live species, a high-speed multiplex SRS imaging platform is needed. By combining a spectral focusing excitation technique with a rapid acousto-optic delay line, we demonstrate a hyperspectral SRS imaging platform capable of measuring a 3-dB spectral window of ∼200  cm^−1 within 12.8 μs with a scan rate of 30 KHz. We present hyperspectral images of a mixture of two different microsphere polymers as well as live fungal cells mixed with human blood.

The repetition rate of a Kerr comb composed of a single soliton in an anomalous group velocity dispersion silicon-nitride microcavity is measured as a function of pump frequency. By comparing operation in the soliton and non-soliton states, the contributions from the Raman soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) and the thermal effects are evaluated; the SSFS is found to dominate the changes in the repetition rate, similar to silica cavities. The relationship between the changes in the repetition rate and the pump frequency detuning is found to be independent of the nonlinearity coefficient and dispersion of the cavity. Modeling of the repetition rate change by using the generalized Lugiato–Lefever equation is discussed; the Kerr shock is found to have only a minor effect on repetition rate for cavity solitons with duration down to ∼50  fs.

Optical resonators with high quality factors (Qs) are promising for a variety of applications due to the enhanced nonlinearity and increased photonic density of states at resonances. In particular, frequency combs (FCs) can be generated through four-wave mixing in high-Q microresonators made from Kerr nonlinear materials such as silica, silicon nitride, magnesium fluoride, and calcium fluoride. These devices have potential for on-chip frequency metrology and high-resolution spectroscopy, high-bandwidth radiofrequency information processing, and high-data-rate telecommunications. Silicon nitride microresonators are attractive due to their compatibility with integrated circuit manufacturing; they can be cladded with silica for long-term stable yet tunable operation, and allow multiple resonators to be coupled together to achieve novel functionalities. Despite previous demonstrations of high-Q silicon nitride resonators, FC generation using silicon nitride microresonator chips still requires pump power significantly higher than those in whispering gallery mode resonators made from silica, magnesium, and calcium fluorides, which all have shown resonator Qs between 0.1 and 100 billion. Here, we report on a fabrication procedure that leads to the demonstration of “finger-shaped” Si_3N_4 microresonators with intrinsic Qs up to 17 million at a free spectrum range (FSR) of 24.7 GHz that are suitable for telecommunication and microwave photonics applications. The frequency comb onset power can be as low as 2.36 mW and broad, single FSR combs can be generated at a low pump power of 24 mW, both within reach of on-chip semiconductor lasers. Our demonstration is an important step toward a fully integrated on-chip FC source.

Optical microresonator-based Kerr frequency comb generation has developed into a hot research area in the past decade. Microresonator combs are promising for portable applications due to their potential for chip-level integration and low power consumption. According to the group velocity dispersion of the microresonator employed, research in this field may be classified into two categories: the anomalous dispersion regime and the normal dispersion regime. In this paper, we discuss the physics of Kerr comb generation in the normal dispersion regime and review recent experimental advances. The potential advantages and future directions of normal dispersion combs are also discussed.

We demonstrate a new biphoton manipulation and characterization technique based on electro-optic intensity modulation and time shifting. By applying fast modulation signals with a sharply peaked cross-correlation to each photon from an entangled pair, it is possible to measure temporal correlations with significantly higher precision than that attainable using standard single-photon detection. Low-duty-cycle pulses and maximal-length sequences are considered as modulation functions, reducing the time spread in our correlation measurement by a factor of five compared to our detector jitter. With state-of-the-art electro-optic components, we expect the potential to surpass the speed of any single-photon detectors currently available.

We examine the principle of a modified Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) technique to measure the free spectral range of a Fabry-Perot etalon (FPE). The FPE's periodic transmission of phase-modulated light allows us to adopt a sampling theorem to develop a new relationship for the PDH error signal. This leads us to find the key parameters governing the measurement accuracy: the phase modulation index ${\beta}$ and the FPE finesse. Without any additional complexity for background noise reduction, we achieve a measurement accuracy of 0.5 ppm. The improvement is mainly attributed to the wide-band phase modulation approaching ${\beta}=10$, and partly to the use of both reflected and transmitted light from the FPE and good FPE finesse.

Phase imaging microscopy, based either on holography or nonholographic methods such as phase retrieval, has seen considerable attention recently. Phase retrieval offers the advantage of being free of a reference arm and enables a more stable and compact setup. We present an optical setup that provides enhanced resolution by implementing synthetic aperture imaging based on phase retrieval using an electrically tunable lens (ETL). The ETL is a more compact and less expensive alternative to computerized translation stages and spatial light modulators. Before applying phase retrieval, we discuss a general calibration algorithm, which performs image registration, corrects for magnifications, and determines the axial locations of image planes. Finally, we obtain resolution-enhanced images of a phase grating and of cells to demonstrate the practical application of our technique.

Ultrabroadband millimeter-wave and subterahertz waveforms offer significant potential, from ultrahigh-speed communications to high-resolution radar. Electronic generation of broadband arbitrary waveforms at these frequencies suffers from limited digital-to-analog converter speed and high timing jitter. Photonic-assisted techniques, such as those based on optical shaping and frequency-to-time mapping, can overcome these difficulties. Nevertheless, previous photonic arbitrary waveform generation demonstrations are confined to microwave and low millimeter-wave frequencies due to limited optical-to-electrical conversion bandwidth. Here, by utilizing cutting-edge photodetector technology, we report the first generation, wireless transmission, and measurement of substantially complex and highly stable arbitrary waveforms in the W-band (75–110 GHz). These waveforms exhibit high time-bandwidth products up to 600, arbitrarily extendable repetition periods, and phase-noise performance substantially better than state-of-the-art electronic arbitrary waveform generators. The utility of the generated waveforms is demonstrated in multi-target ranging, where a depth resolution of 3.9 mm, unprecedented in the W-band, is achieved over more than 5 m.

Recent research on time cloaking has revealed a fascinating approach to hide temporal events from an interrogating optical field, by opening up and subsequently closing intensity gaps in a probe beam. Experiments thus far have demonstrated temporal cloaking of nonlinear interactions and high-speed optical data. Here we report a temporal cloak with the new capability not only to hide optical data, but also to concurrently transmit it along another wavelength channel for subsequent readout, masking the information from one observer while directing it to another. Additionally, the cloak succeeds in passing modulated data unscathed through a scrambling event, providing a new form of tampering resistance. Both examples launch a paradigm shift in temporal cloaking: instead of using time cloaks primarily to disrupt communication, we show how they can also improve data transmission, in turn greatly widening the range of possible applications in telecommunications.

We demonstrate an on-chip four-wave mixing (FWM) scheme in a silicon nanowaveguide to scale the bandwidth of a frequency comb generated by phase modulation of continuous-wave (CW) lasers. The FWM process doubles the bandwidth of the initial comb generated by the modulation of a CW laser. For example, a wavelength-tunable frequency comb with >100 comb lines spaced by 10 GHz within a bandwidth of 5 dB is generated.

Kerr frequency combs generated from microresonators are the subject of intense study for potential applications ranging from short pulse generation to frequency metrology to radiofrequency signal processing. Most research employs microresonators with anomalous dispersion, for which modulation instability is believed to play a key role in initiation of the comb. Comb generation in normal-dispersion microresonators has also been reported but is less well understood. Here, we report a detailed investigation of few-moded, normal-dispersion silicon nitride microresonators, showing that mode coupling can strongly modify the local dispersion, even changing its sign. We demonstrate a link between mode coupling and initiation of comb generation by showing experimentally the pinning of one of the initial comb sidebands near a mode-crossing frequency. Associated with this route to comb formation, we observe direct generation of coherent, bandwidth-limited pulses at repetition rates down to 75 GHz, without the need to first pass through a chaotic state. Our results with normal-dispersion devices highlight mode interactions as a beneficial tool for comb initiation and pulse formation.

We employed photonic radio frequency (RF) arbitrary waveform generation to demonstrate space–time compression of ultrabroadband wireless signals through highly scattering multipath channels. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental report that explores an RF-photonic transmitter to both characterize channel dispersions in real wireless environments and generate predistorted waveforms to achieve focusing through the multipath channels. Our experiments span a three octave frequency range of 2–18 GHz, nearly an order of magnitude beyond the ∼2  GHz instantaneous bandwidth reported in previous spatiotemporal focusing experiments relying on electronic waveform generators.

The fundamental quasi-TE and quasi-TM modes of a sub-wavelength strip silicon waveguide are not purely TE or TM as the plane waves in free space. We investigate theoretically and experimentally the far-field polarization compositions of the two waveguide modes after they emanate from the waveguide facet. The measured polarization extinction ratios (PERs) of 31 dB for the quasi-TM mode and 26 dB for quasi-TE mode using free-space polarizers are consistent with our numerical analysis. Moreover, our far-field simulations show that the free-space measurement of PERs is influenced, and in many cases limited, by the sizes of various apertures in the experimental setup. This suggests a potential trade-off between achievable PERs and overall power detection/collection efficiency.

We demonstrate spectral shaping of entangled photons in the telecom band with a programmable, fiber-based optical filter. The fine-resolution spectral control permits implementation of length-40 Hadamard codes, through which we are able to verify frequency anticorrelation with a 20-fold increase in total counts over that permitted by the equivalent pair of monochromators at the same input flux. By programming the complex spectral transmission function corresponding to a Mach–Zehnder interferometer, we also construct variations on Franson interferometers that are free from mechanical instabilities, demonstrating spectral phase independence in the slow-detector limit, in which all temporal features are unobservable. Our configuration furnishes a single, compact arrangement for manipulating telecom biphotons and characterizing their quality.

We present a scheme to generate a 10 GHz optical frequency comb that is bandwidth reconfigurable on a time scale of tens of nanoseconds via electronic control of the drive signal to a phase modulator. When such a comb is used as the source for a radio-frequency (RF) photonic filter employing dispersive propagation, the RF filter bandwidth varies in inverse proportion to the optical bandwidth. As a result we are able to demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, bandwidth-reconfigurable RF filtering with transition times under 20 ns. The reconfiguration speed is determined by the response time of a programmable RF variable attenuator.
