Motes are cotton (Gossypiumspp.) ovules that fail to ripen into mature seeds but develop into aborted structures. These aborted ovules represent a loss in yield and cause imperfections in yarn and cloth quality by causing neps. The number of motes (percentage of ovules that failed to develop into seeds) was studied in interspecific hybrids (ISH) of cotton, which have a higher number of motes, for 3 years (1980‐1982). A cytoplasmic male sterile ISH was hand‐pollinated with pollen from its counterpart fertile‐ISH and strains of parental species (Gossypium hirsutumand G. barbadense). The number of motes in seed‐cotton produced as a result of these hand‐pollinations was compared in 1980 and 1981. The results indicated that the number of motes was dependent upon the male parent used to pollinate the CMS‐ISH. Pollinations with strains of G. hirsutumor G. barbadenseresulted in approximately a 50% reduction in number of motes as compared to pollination with counterpart fertile‐ISH. These findings provide an indirect evidence of cryptic structural differentiation in tetraploid species of cotton. During 1982, G. hirsutumbackcross plants (grown from seed produced by hand‐pollination in 1981), a fertile upland hybrid, and genotypes of parental species, when grown under open‐pollination, had significantly lower number of motes than fertile‐ISH plants. Out‐crossing to parental species was observed to greatly reduce the number of motes in fertile‐ISH. This is as expected because outcrossing to parental species is similar to backcrossing, which masks the effects of cryptic structural differentiation.

Scores on five personality characteristics, extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism as well as reactive and proactive rebelliousness, and the appreciation of soft/nonrebellious and hard/rebellious rock-music videotapes were explored. After completing the personality tests, female and male undergraduates were exposed to rock-music videotapes and asked to rate various aspects of their enjoyment of each. Analysis indicated that psychoticism and reactive rebelliousness were associated with enjoyment in a parallel fashion. Specifically, respondents scoring high on psychoticism or high on reactive rebelliousness enjoyed hard/rebellious rock-music videotapes more than did their peers scoring low on psychoticism or low on reactive rebelliousness. The reverse was evident for the enjoyment of soft/nonrebellious rock-music videotapes. In contrast, scores on extraversion, neuroticism, and proactive rebelliousness were not associated with enjoyment. Gender differences emerged, however; women (n= 78) enjoyed soft/nonrebellious rock music more than did men (n= 60); and conversely, men enjoyed hard/rebellious rock music more than did women.

Hematogenous osteomyelitis is considered a surgical problem. It is our belief that antecedent to the presenting surgical problem of acute osteomyelitis is the fact that susceptibility to this infectious process depends on the presence or the absence of immunologic defenses in the host. These defenses are the preeminent factors in susceptibility, acuteness and chronicity, and they may determine the mortality and the tendency to recurrence.In the hands of experienced surgeons operative technic has reached a supreme degree of perfection. No one questions that surgical intervention for osteomyelitis is frequently a life-saving procedure and markedly shortens the course of the chronic infection. In the face of these facts the incidence of osteomyelitis remains the same, and the percentage of recurrences in properly handled cases still remains high. This evidence warrants a study of the immunology of this infectious process in an attempt to throw some light on the problem of

Male undergraduates were exposed to (a) nature scenes or (b) beautiful versus (c) unattractive females in sexually enticing situations. Thereafter, they assessed their girl friends' sexual appeal and evaluated their satisfaction with their mates. On pictorial measures of bodily appeal profiles of flat through hypervoluptuous breast and buttock, preexposure to beautiful females tended to suppress mates' appeal, while preexposure to unattractive females tended to enhance it. After exposure to beautiful females, mates' aesthetic value fell significantly below assessments made after exposure to unattractive females; this value assumed an intermediate position after control exposure. Changes in mates' aesthetic appeal did not correspond with changes in satisfaction with mates, however.

Salmonella suipestifer, or the "hog cholera" bacillus, is usually found in association with the virus of hog cholera but has also been isolated from cattle, sheep and rodents. For several years after its identification it was considered to be nonpathogenic to man, but since 1918 numerous epidemics of gastro-enteritis have been reported in which this organism was ingested with food and was recovered from the stools of the afflicted individuals.Gouley and Israel1 have recently reported thirty-five instances of bacteremia in man due to Bacillus suipestifer, which included thirty-four cases found in a review of the literature and one of their own. The disease, for the most part, was evidenced as a bronchopneumonia or simulated typhoid or influenza. Since only one patient in this series was reported as having a bone or joint involvement, we feel that the following case of osteomyelitis is of interest:A white baby girl
