Due to inherent limitations such as high carrier recombination efficiency, limited active sites, and suboptimal utilization of visible light, graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4) has constrained its widespread application in water treatment within photocatalytic systems. In addressing this issue, the present study employed acid etching and sonochemistry to fabricate a Ti 3 C 2 -SO 3 H/g-C 3 N 4 (TiCSOHCN) composite photocatalyst for the removal of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). The amalgamation of Ti 3 C 2 -SO 3 H (TiCSOH) with g-C 3 N 4 engendered the establishment of a discernible Schottky barrier, facilitating an expedited electron transfer rate. Photocatalytic degradation experiments demonstrate that, compared to individual components, the TiCSOHCN composite photocatalyst exhibits significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity. The removal efficiency of TC reaches 75.42 % within 2 h, and even after five cycles of experimentation, the degradation efficiency remains close to 70 %, indicating excellent stability. The augmentation can be predominantly ascribed to the cooperative influence arising from the synergy between Ti 3 C 2 -SO 3 H and g-C 3 N 4. The augmentation of visible light responsiveness in g-C 3 N 4 , achieved through its modification with TiCSOH, resulted in the mitigation of photoelectron-hole pair recombination, consequently leading to an amelioration in the photocatalytic efficacy of the TiCSOHCN composite catalyst. Intermediate species arising from the degradation of tetracycline were discerned utilizing LC-MS, and conjectures regarding plausible degradation pathways were postulated. Evaluations of the ecotoxicological impact of tetracycline and its intermediates indicated a progressive diminution in toxicity throughout the course of the photocatalytic degradation process. Furthermore, through free radical capture and EPR tests, it was confirmed that ·O 2 – and ·OH are the primary active species responsible for the photocatalytic degradation of TC, substantiating the proposed rational photocatalytic degradation mechanism. • A novel holly-leaf shaped graphene (HLG) with unique hollowed-out structure has been designed. • A possible formation mechanism of HLG has been demonstrated that strong capillary forces from wood arrayed pore structure plays a crucial role. • Both experiment and theoretical model demonstrate its structural superiority in facilitating photothermal conversion. • HLG/wood has excellent performance for seawater desalination and sewage treatment. Similar to transpiration, the formulation of interfacial solar evaporation has been designed to perform water treatment. The concept involves wood-based support (tree) with a graphene-based layer acting as leaves. To enhance light absorption and solar-thermal conversion capacity, a novel holly-leaf graphene (HLG) layer with an individual hollowed-out structure was engineered. The formation mechanism of this HLG was shown to be linked to the strong capillarity forces in the polyporous wood. By creating biomimetic leaves made of graphene, the light-to-heat conversion performance can be improved, while exhibiting substantially lower thermal conductivity (0.074 W/(m K)) than natural wood. Under solar irradiation, HLG/wood exhibits an outstanding evaporation rate of 1.96 kg/(m2 h), with an impressive efficiency of 94.2 %. A theoretical model of HLG/wood based on the thermal management capability was built to further confirm its structural superiority in facilitating photothermal conversion. Consequently, a bilayer evaporator based on HLG/wood has the potential to revolutionize water purification processes, including desalination of seawater, removal of heavy metal ions, and treatment of organic dye-contaminated wastewater. PCTP-GO exhibits various desirable performances, such as excellent electrical resistance, high chemical stability, high insulation, good thermal stability, good mechanical characteristics, and adhesion. [Display omitted] Herein, we report the Ag-r-GO-CuFe 2 O 4 -Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposite (Ag-r-GO-CFO-FO NCs) for effective photocatalytic activity against organic pollutants. Herein the O-S scheme mechanism is achieved by the formation of Ohmic (O) and Schottky (S) junctions. The two interfacial charge carriers for accelerated phono formation and mass transfer and thus increase in the light-harvesting with electron traps for the gerenation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The photocatalytic activity of the constructed Ag-r-GO-CFO-FO NCs was tested against organic dyes (red RB, orange 2R and black B) and the degradation efficiency was calculated to be 99.8, 99.3 and 99.8% respectively. The radical quenching shows the formation of •OH and O 2 •- which plays major role in the mineralization of organic pollutants. Total organic carbon (TOC) after the degradation of red RB, orange 2R and black B by Ag-r-GO-CFO-FO NCs was 2.1%, 1.6% and 1.9% respectively, which shows the complete mineralization of the pollutants. In addition, the real-time application of the photocatalytic efficiency of NCs was performed against the effluent collected from dying industrial (which is a combination of red RB, orange 2R and black B) and the degradation efficiency was 98.2%. Toxicity of the NCs was performed against maize plants, the results show that the NCs are non-toxicity towards plants and can be used for real-time application. Due to their high chemical stability and/or poor biodegradability, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are viewed in this context as a highly competitive water treatment method for the removal of these organic pollutants. AOPs have an immense amount of potential for treating a variety of these contaminants and enhancing wastewater biodegradability. They still have some significant drawbacks, such as high costs of operation, energy intensive and use of additional chemicals. Combining AOPs with other technique enhances the separation efficiency as compared to individual AOP. An investigation on two novel nanomaterials curcumin-derived graphene oxide (GO CM) nanosheets and bisdemethoxycurcumin-analog quantum dots (BDMCAQD) on polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber platform was carried out to evaluate their performance in water treatment and corrosion mitigation. GO CM was acquired by pyrolyzing curcumin and the BDMCAQDs were obtained by laser ablation. The prepared nanomaterials were analyzed by SEM/TEM, XRD, Raman, FTIR, and were blended with PAN to obtain nanofibers through electrospinning. The fabrication process parameters were optimized by TOPSIS −Taguchi L 9 (33) DoE. The optimized (A 2 B 2 C 3) PAN-GO CM (F d :116.1 nm) and (A 2 B 2 C 3) PAN-BDMCAQD (F d :110.9 nm) exhibited improved filtration performance with Pr: 79.45 %; 77.2 %; TS: 35.22 (MPa); 24.73 (MPa); PWF: 4038 (L/hr.m2), 3790 (L/hr.m2); SR: 94.25 %, 92.52 %; FRR: 96.17 %, 98.05 % respectively. Both PAN-GO CM (CA = 31.6°; ζ = -40.31 mV) and PAN-BDMCAQD (CA = 37.7°; ζ = -42.48 mV) exhibited remarkable photocatalytic self-cleaning performance, and also showed excellent heavy metal removal of 53 % Pb (II), 82 % Cd (II) and 96 % Cr (VI) for PAN-GO CM and 48 % Pb (II), 98 % Cd (II) and 90 % Cr (VI) for PAN-BDMCAQD. The nanofibers (A 2 B 2 C 1) also showed excellent anticorrosion behavior on 316 L SS with 99.75 % and 99.85 % IE for PAN-GO CM and PAN-BDMCAQD respectively, evident from electrochemical analysis, indicating good corrosion protection of coated samples. The as-synthesized BSJP exhibited excellent catalytic degradation efficiency against methylene blue (MB) as the model substrate, owing to self-propelling motion caused by the unique bowl shape and the concentration effect of pollutants in the bowl-shaped structure. The catalyst has excellent catalytic efficiency. At circumneutral pH, the reaction rate constant of BSJP micromotor was 3.35 times of that of non-propellant particles. At pH = 2, Pt/COF-LZU1 BSJP exhibits the best activity with a maximum removal rate of 98.61 %. Moreover, even under extreme pH conditions (pH < 2), the catalytic degradation efficiency of MB remained high, and the structure and morphology of the catalyst remained unchanged. Importantly, the catalyst exhibited remarkable stability and recyclability. The degradation rate of MB and the removal rate of TOC remained above 90 % during the four cycles. This excellent catalytic performance under extremely acidic conditions was attributed to the physical confinement of Pt nanoparticles by stable COF-LZU1. The results demonstrated that the Bi/ZnSnO 3 composite with 1.5 % Bi exhibited superior photocatalytic performance. with the optimal sample producing NH 3 at a rate of 988 μmol/L g-1h−1 under simulated sunlight. This is 5 times faster than that of pure ZnSnO 3. Additionally, the Bi/ZnSnO 3 composite showed significantly better photocatalytic performance than pure ZnSnO 3 in RhB degradation. Structural analyses confirmed successful loading of Bi nanoparticles on the surface of ZnSnO 3. Furthermore, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy analysis revealed that the surface plasmon resonance effect of metal Bi effectively improved the optical absorption performance. However, the sensitization of metal Bi had a limited contribution to the high photocatalytic activity of the Bi/ZnSnO 3. Electrochemical analyses indicated that the Schottky barrier formed between Bi and ZnSnO 3 captured photo-generated electrons and promoted the charge separation, which was considered responsible for the increased photoactivity of Bi/ZnSnO 3.This work provides a new application of Bi/ZnSnO 3 and may offer new ideas for the application of ZnSnO 3 materials in the field of photocatalysis, which are crucial for addressing environmental pollution and energy conversion challenges. [Display omitted] Tourmaline, a novel adsorption material, is increasingly used in heavy-metal polluted waters treatment. For a comprehensive and in-depth understanding, this work focuses on the distinguishing features and adaptability of tourmaline in heavy metal wastewater treatment, as well as the associated removal mechanism and its modification on new functional materials synthesis. Characteristics of tourmaline and its specific properties (spontaneous polarization, piezoelectricity, and thermoelectricity) favorable to heavy metals removal in aqueous solution are well demonstrated in this work. The feasible application of tourmaline in water purification and its high removal efficiency on typical heavy metals are summarized and analyzed. The existing research results have shown that the removal mechanism of heavy metal ions by tourmaline mainly includes electrostatic adsorption, ion exchange, water polarization by tourmaline and the formation of hydroxide precipitation. Moreover, the advantages and feasibility of tourmaline as a new modifier in preparation of various functional materials for heavy metals adsorption are introduced and discussed. In this work, an innovative nanosorbent is assembled based on the combination of Fe 2 VO 6 ferrofluid, silane covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and gelatin/aminated natural cotton/chitosan hydrogel (FF-SiCOF@Gel-ANC@Ch.Hgel). The developed nanomaterial was fully identified using several characterization techniques such as FTIR, electron microscopy, XRD and XPS; and was then studied as an effective nanosorbent for removal of organic nanopollutants such as polymethyl methacrylate nanoplastics (PMMA) and inorganic nanopollutants such as silver nanoparticles from water. Optimization of experimental parameters such as reaction duration, nanosorbent mass, nanopollutant concentration, solution pH, temperature and medium ionic strength revealed promising removal efficiencies towards both nanopollutants with 98.3% and 99.2% recovery for Ag and PMMA nanopollutants, respectively. Kinetic studies confirmed that the adsorptive removal of both nanosorbent followed via a pseudo -second order chemisorption process. Thermodynamic investigations highlighted that spontaneity of the chemisorption process in terms of negative ΔG° values. Industrial scale applicability was confirmed with interestingly high removal efficiencies toward both nanopollutants (99.45% and 96.80% for Ag and PMMA, respectively) in industrial wastewater. Furthermore, proposed nanosorbent showed appreciable recyclability with little decrease in removal efficiencies (from 95.30% to 91.00% and from 97.20% to 93.00% for Ag and PMMA respectively) after 5 adsorption/regeneration cycles. Considering nanosorbent comparatively high adsorption capacities, together with its industrial applicability and reusability, it was proposed as a promising candidate for wastewater treatment applications. The green aspects in this study were investigated in terms of reusing the recovered Ag@FF-SiCOF@Gel-ANC@Ch.Hgel as a potential nanocatalyst in reductive degradation of sulfasalazine drug, a potentially hazardous pollutant. High degradation rates were deduced at optimal conditions providing 2.3 min−1 pseudo -first order rate constant with only 3.18% drop in the catalytic activity after 5 successive reduction/regeneration cycles. The influence of 1D and 2D nanomaterials on the behavior of developed PPy-NTs-based nanocomposite for eliminating Hg2+ ions was explored. The developed nanocomposite revealed greater adsorption performance to eliminate Hg2+ions from contaminated water. The PPy-NTs/pg-C 3 N 4 potential as an excellent sorbent for the removal of Hg2+ and possible mechanisms were assessed using batch experiments involving multiple factors that can also optimize the maximum adsorption conditions that were found to be at pH = 5, 1 h stirring time, and 0.5 g/L adsorbent dosage. The maximum Hg2+ absorption capacity reached was 197 mg/g. The data were well fitted with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which indicates that the chemisorption process controls the Hg2+ ions adsorption onto the pg-C 3 N 4 /PPy-NTs. The four adsorption isotherms models were applied to analyze the adsorption of Hg2+ ions on the developed adsorbent. The data were well described with Freundlich isotherm, revealing the presence of heterogeneous adsorption sites. The effect of temperature and thermodynamic considerations were investigated, showing that Hg2+ ion adsorption is endothermic. Additionally, the prepared material was explored for the supercapacitor application. It delivered an outstanding electrochemical supercapacitor performance and remarkable cycling stability. [Display omitted] The membrane separation process is sometimes limited in terms of performance; therefore, coupling it with other methods, such as adsorption, can exert a synergistic effect, overcome membrane fouling, and improve energy efficiency, which is especially suitable for separating mixtures. Adsorption and membrane filtration are two well-known separation techniques with several noteworthy characteristics, including a strong scientific foundation, adaptability, simple process management and design, and great capability to remove many impurities. Consequently, these techniques are possible candidates for hybrid systems. This review provides an overview of the most recent studies on adsorption–membrane hybrid systems that use various adsorbents and membranes to remove pollutants from water and wastewater streams. This study examines emerging hybrid adsorption-membrane technologies with different configurations for wastewater treatment, their benefits and drawbacks, hybrid system designs, and their utilization. It discusses the application of various adsorbents in hybrid systems. Finally, it presents recommendations for future research on applying hybrid adsorption-membrane technology to wastewater treatment. The adsorbents have served as "helpers" for the membrane, leading to decreasing the membrane fouling and increasing the flux of permeate at the same time by breaking the formed concentration polarization layer on the surface of the membrane. The semiconductor-based photocatalysis is an effective technique to resolve major environmental issues. Recently, silver vanadate (Ag 3 VO 4) based photocatalysts are gaining more attention in the research field due to its narrow bandgap (∼2.20 eV) and extended visible light absorption via Ag NPs exhibiting SPR effect. The Ag 3 VO 4 exhibits good photocatalytic properties hence it is considered as an efficient photocatalyst for environmental remediations. The current review demonstrated the structural and optoelectronic properties of Ag 3 VO 4 through a theoretical perspective. The first principal computation was exploited to confirm the band's optoelectronic properties and structural properties. In this review, the various synthesis methods to fabricate Ag 3 VO 4 photocatalyst have been illustrated briefly. Also, the numerous modification ways are adapted to boost up the photocatalytic activity of Ag 3 VO 4 are conventional heterojunction, p-n heterojunction, Z-scheme, and S-scheme. These modification strategies minimize the rate of EHP recombination and boost the charge transference and separation efficacy. Furthermore, photocatalytic applications like dye degradation, antibiotic degradation, heavy metal ions reduction, and phenol degradation over Ag 3 VO 4 photocatalyst have been highlighted along with their respective photodegradation mechanism. In this work, we showcased how plastic waste derived reduced graphene oxide (WrGOs) and its composite with Fe 3 O 4 (WrGOs-Fe 3 O 4) can be used to remove drugs from water treatment plants and for energy storage applications specifically supercapacitors. WrGOs and WrGOs-Fe 3 O 4 showed the removal efficacy of diclofenac and caffeine drugs from water samples with Q max 11.06 mg/g and 15.1 mg/g for diclofenac, and 8.77 mg/g and 15.24 mg/g for caffeine. For energy storage purposes, WrGOs-Fe 3 O 4 was first examined in a three-electrode setup using 1 M H 2 SO 4 as an electrolyte along with the WrGOs. The composite WrGOs-Fe 3 O 4 demonstrated a good specific capacitance of 488F/g at 1 A/g current density. For practical application, a Supercapacitor (SC) device was fabricated using WrGOs-Fe 3 O 4 as electrode material in a two-electrode setup which exhibited excellent energy density (52.57 Wh/Kg at 0.5 A/g), high cyclic stability (90.03 %) and wider potential window of 1.4 V in 1 M H 2 SO 4 aqueous electrolyte due to stronger ionic diffusion. A, B', and B" are cations with varying degrees of chemical flexibility, leading to multiple combinations, which make them excellent candidates as advanced materials. Herein, we comprehensively screened stable A 2 B'B"O 6 double perovskite metal oxides arranged based on Sr, La, K, Gd, Ba, Na, Ca, Dy, Tb, Sm, Eu, and Bi cations ordered at A sites that have been used in photocatalytic pollutant degradation and water treatment processes. Also, we examined recent developments of double perovskites oxides as photocatalysts through discussion on how their chemistries could be tailored to improve their performances. Also, photocatalytic process was explained along with its characteristics, milestones, mechanisms, modes of operation, and double perovskites materials used in this field indicating unique photocatalytic properties. Spent caustic is an extremely polluted industrial wastewater with quite complex chemistry and various environmental negative impacts. Conventional wastewater treatment methods are not adequately efficient for the remediation of spent caustic. In the present work, for the first time, the treatment of spent caustic effluent was investigated by the Electro-Peroxone (EP) method as a subdivision of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs). The Central Composite Design (CCD) was employed to optimize the operational parameters, including initial COD, applied current, pH, and ozone flow rate in the removal of COD. The statistical investigations showed an acceptable determination coefficient and a suitable second-order model. The predicted optimal circumstances were as the following: initial COD = 1076 mg. L-1, applied current = 0.79 A, pH = 7.9 and O 3 flow rate = 1.68 L.min−1. At optimum points, the predicted and actual COD removal percentages were 96.3 and 95.0 %, respectively. The kinetic investigations showed that the removal of COD followed the first-order kinetic with the half-life and constant reaction rate at 18 min and 0.038 min−1, respectively. The specific energy consumption (SEC) value in the EP process was calculated at 33.96 kWh/Kg COD removal, showing that the combined EP process could be a cost-effective technique for the treatment of spent caustic effluent on an industrial scale. Herein, novel green biocomposite beads, CS/ZIF-8/TiO 2 (CZT), based on chitosan modified with zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) and titania (TiO 2) was introduced. The interesting and noteworthy features of this new biocomposite are its green synthesis, biocompatibility, and easy separation ability. The composite beads effectively decolorize Malachite Green (MG) dye solution using visible LED light. In the present study, the efficiency of three components of CZT biocomposite, which were synthesized by two different methods (in situ and blending), was compared to investigate the effect of the synthesis method, as well as the synthesis with two different amounts of TiO 2 (0.2 g, and 0.4 g) to investigate the effect of TiO 2. The prepared materials through the XRD, SEM, EDS, FTIR, DRS, TGA, and RAMAN analyses were characterized. The synergistic effect of ZIF-8, TiO 2 , and chitosan in the biocomposite increased the photo-decolorization ability of the MG dye under visible-light irradiation. The decolorization at the optimum pH (pH = 6.5) after 180 min reached 94.5% and at the natural pH (pH = 3.93) after 300 min reached 98.2%. The prepared GO, CNC, and NFCM were characterized by using X-ray Diffraction(XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy(FESEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis(TGA) etc. The efficiency of wastewater purification of fabricated NFCM were determined by Ultra Violet(UV)-vis spectrophotometer and Inductively Couple Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy(ICP-OES). Whereas the fabricated NFCM were highly crystalline, thermally stable, have good surface activity, exhibit remarkable removal efficiency against the toxic heavy metals and soluble dye. [Display omitted] Desalination and removing elements such as calcium from aqueous solutions is very important to improve water quality. In this study, bentonite/nano γ-alumina composites were utilized as a low-cost adsorbent for calcium removal from aqueous solutions. To investigate the adsorption process, several experiments were conducted, including initial calcium concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time, and the γ-alumina content in the composite. Increasing γ-alumina amounts in the composite by more than 1% had the reverse effect due to agglomeration. The increase in specific surface area for bentonite-1wt% γ-alumina compared to bentonite is mainly due to the addition of γ-alumina. The calcium adsorption capasity increased from 0.5 mg/g to 1.15 mg/g when the initial ion concentration was raised from 60 ppm to 100 ppm. The adsorption capacity of 1.15 mg/g and removal % of 23 with were obtained for optimal initial concentration of 100 ppm, adsorbent dosage of 20 g.l−1, and composite percentage of bentonite/1 wt% γ-alumina. The adsorption mechanism was studied by the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models, and the adsorption data was fitted better by the Freundlich model. The Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm revealed the physical nature of the adsorption. Conclusively, the bentonite-1wt% γ-alumina nanocomposite had better results than the raw bentonite. [Display omitted] In modern society, the bulk production of new chemicals, huge consumption, and the discharge of micropollutants into the environment are unavoidable events. Practically, wastewater treatment plants are the main dissemination channel of micropollutants due to their inefficient performances but they are intended to upgrade to 80% removal. Typically, adsorption and membrane separations are effective in removing micropollutants but significantly varied in efficiency from 0–100%. Hence, the scientific community is searching for alternative water treatment technologies. Consequently, adsorption-membrane hybrid technologies have been emerging as promising solutions to mitigate the limitations of individual technology. This hybrid system improved many properties such as hydrophilicity, antifouling property, permeability, regeneration slurry separation, and overall performance due to the synergetic effect. Moreover, the hybrid system was further improved through the use of magnetic carbon nanocomposites (MCN) and modified membranes. In general, the performances of hybrid technologies ranged from 60-100% but the application of MCN with high-pressure driven membranes demonstrated nearly complete removal. On the other hand, the industrial application of hybrid technology is still limited at the early stage of development. Moreover, the hybrid system required thorough investigations in terms of performance and system configuration for practical application in the future. Hence, this review paper focused on thorough evaluations of the synthesis, characterization, mechanisms, and performances of pristine adsorption and membrane separation. Then, it explores the potential performance of hybrid technologies and anticipates practical applications at full scale. Finally, concluding remarks and the future perspectives of the technologies are highlighted. In general, the study indicated the perspective of micropollutants management through membrane-adsorption hybrid technology as a potential candidate for pollution controlling and water sustainability.
