Sepsis is prevalent in internal medicine (IM) departments. Elderly patients with sepsis and chronic medical conditions are at an increased risk for venous thromboemolism (VTE). The objective of this study was to assess the rate of VTE and the accuracy of the Padua Prediction Score (PPS) to predict VTE in patient with sepsis admitted to IM departments.

We describe a new heuristic for detecting bad cycles (reachable cycles that are not confined within one or another designated sets of model states), a fundamental operation for model-checking algorithms. It is a variation on a standard implementation of the Emerson-Lei algorithm, which our experimental data suggests can result in a significant speed-up for verification runs that pass. We conclude that this heuristic can be used to advantage on “mature” designs for which the anticipated result of the verification is pass.

Abstract: We interpret the (formal) postulates of measurement in quantum theory in terms of measurement procedures that can be done in the laboratory (at least in principle).

This article addresses the problem of designing memory-efficient algorithms for the verification of temporal properties of finite-state programs. Both the programs and their desired temporal properties are modeled as automata on infinite words (Büchi automata). Verification is then reduced to checking the emptiness of the automaton resulting from the product of the program and the property. This problem is usually solved by computing the strongly connected components of the graph representing the product automaton. Here, we present algorithms that solve the emptiness problem without explicitly constructing the strongly connected components of the product graph. By allowing the algorithms to err with some probability, we can implement them with a randomly accessed memory of size O(n) bits, where n is the number of states of the graph, instead of O(n log n) bits that the presently known algorithms require.

BackgroundStudies reported that prenatal exposure to antibiotics in general represents a risk factor for development of epilepsy and/or cerebral palsy in children. A pathophysiological relationship seemed improbable and required adjustment to possible confounders.MethodsIn a retrospective cohort investigation, we enrolled children aged 3 to 18 years born between 1998 and 2012 at the single regional hospital, and their mothers, members of ‘Clalit’ (the largest Health Service Organization in the region). Computerized medications database was linked with hospital records of mothers and their children. The exposed group included all children whose mothers purchased one or more antibiotic medications during their pregnancy. Epilepsy was defined by Epilepsy diagnosis and/or by chronic dispensing of antiepileptic drugs. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria for mothers and children, 88,899 children and their 74,416 mothers were selected for the study.ResultsThe group exposed prenatally to antibiotics comprised 36,622 (or 41.2%) children. Of them, 326 (0.9%) developed epilepsy compared to 370 (0.7%) in the unexposed group (p=0.002); Number Needed to Harm 500. Exposure during the first, second and third trimester was characterized by incidence of epilepsy in 0.8% (p= 0.928), 0.9% (p= 0.270) and 0.9% (p=0.094) of exposed children, respectively, compared to unexposed group Based on Poisson regression analysis, epilepsy was associated with male sex, maternal smoking and delivery by cesarean section. The possibility of confounding by indication was refuted by sensitivity analysis.ConclusionWe found an association of intrauterine exposure to antibiotics (particularly in late pregnancy) and development of epilepsy in children. Possible pathophysiological mechanisms are discussed. The effect of some undetermined confounder(s) cannot be ruled out.Disclosure(s)Nothing to disclose
