Spontaneous phase separation of materials is a powerful strategy to generate highly defined 2D nanomorphologies with novel properties and functions. Exemplary are such morphologies in block copolymers or amphiphilic systems, whose formation can be well predicted based on parameters such as volume fraction and shape factor. In contrast, the formation of 2D nanomorphologies is currently unpredictable in materials perfectly defined at the molecular level, in which crystallinity plays a significant role. Here, we introduce a crystal lattice analysis to predict a priori the formation of 2D nanomorphologies from the crystalline units in phase-separated soft materials. We show that the formation of lamellar morphologies, their domain spacings, and thermal transition temperatures of such materials can be predicted using a straightforward crystal lattice analysis workflow. We envision this approach to facilitate the design and discovery of new materials with 2D nanomorphologies that are essential for next-generation electronic applications.

Heptazine derivatives have attracted significant interest due to their small S1-T1gap, which contributes to their unique electronic and optical properties. However, the nature of the lowest excited state remains ambiguous. In the present study, we characterize the lowest optical transition of heptazine by its magnetic transition dipole moment. To measure the magnetic transition dipole moment, the flat heptazine must be chiroptically active, which is difficult to achieve for single heptazine molecules. Therefore, we used supramolecular polymerization as an approach to make homochiral stacks of heptazine derivatives. Upon formation of the supramolecular polymers, the preferred helical stacking of heptazine introduces circular polarization of absorption and fluorescence. The magnetic transition dipole moments for the S1← S0and S1→ S0are determined to be 0.35 and 0.36 Bohr magneton, respectively. These high values of magnetic transition dipole moments support the intramolecular charge transfer nature of the lowest excited state from nitrogen to carbon in heptazine and further confirm the degeneracy of S1and T1.

Despite the widespread use of microscopy techniques to characterize supramolecular polymers, the role of surfaces in the formation of these structures is unclear. Here we describe the epitaxial growth of intriguing 2D crystals of alkyl benzene‐1,3,5‐triscarboxamides formed by competitive attractive interactions with the mica surface. In contrast to the fibrous structure observed in apolar diluted solution, five‐fold twinned crystals or ribbon‐like structures are obtained on the mica surface. Moreover, these structures are still dynamic on the surface, being able to reorganize during the atomic force microscopy measurements. This work demonstrates that surface‐monomer interactions can be exploited to modulate the structure of 1D supramolecular polymers into 2D crystals.

Supramolecular polymers display interesting optoelectronic properties and, thus, deploy multiple applications based on their molecular arrangement. However, controlling supramolecular interactions to achieve a desirable molecular organization is not straightforward. Over the past decade, light–matter strong coupling has emerged as a new tool for modifying chemical and material properties. This novel approach has also been shown to alter the morphology of supramolecular organization by coupling the vibrational bands of solute and solvent to the optical modes of a Fabry–Perot cavity (vibrational strong coupling, VSC). Here, we study the effect of VSC on the supramolecular polymerization of chiral zinc-porphyrins (S-Zn) via a cooperative effect. Electronic circular dichroism (ECD) measurements indicate that the elongation temperature (Te) of the supramolecular polymerization is lowered by ~10 °C under VSC. We have also generalized this effect by exploring other supramolecular systems under strong coupling conditions. The results indicate that the solute–solvent interactions are modified under VSC, which destabilizes the nuclei of the supramolecular polymer at higher temperatures. These findings demonstrate that the VSC can indeed be used as a tool to control the energy landscape of supramolecular polymerization. Furthermore, we use this unique approach to switch between the states formed under ON- and OFF-resonance conditions, achieved by simply tuning the optical cavity in and out of resonance.

Globally little is known regarding substance use service providers’ perceptions of substitute behaviours and this significant gap could hinder service provision and recovery outcomes. Semi-structured focus group discussions (including 22 service providers across five sites) were conducted in residential treatment facilities in the Western Cape, South Africa. Service providers recognised substances (e.g. cigarettes and caffeine) and behaviours (e.g. gambling, eating, love, sex, shopping, exercise, and gaming) as potential substitutes. Identified substitute motives included managing cravings; self-medication; filling the experiential void of the primary substance, and time-spending. Concurrent behaviours and addictions were believed to be a key mechanism underlying substitution however, service providers did not uniformly screen for co-occurring behavioural addictions. Substitute behaviours were primarily considered a pathway to relapse and service providers emphasised prevention, detection and family education. To suitably intervene, screening for co-occurring behaviours should be an integral part of the assessment of those presenting for substance use treatment.

Liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) of biopolymers has recently been shown to play a central role in the formation of membraneless organelles with a multitude of biological functions1–3. The interplay between LLPS and macromolecular condensation is part of continuing studies4,5. Synthetic supramolecular polymers are the non-covalent equivalent of macromolecules but they are not reported to undergo LLPS yet. Here we show that continuously growing fibrils, obtained from supramolecular polymerizations of synthetic components, are responsible for phase separation into highly anisotropic aqueous liquid droplets (tactoids) by means of an entropy-driven pathway. The crowding environment, regulated by dextran concentration, affects not only the kinetics of supramolecular polymerizations but also the properties of LLPS, including phase-separation kinetics, morphology, internal order, fluidity and mechanical properties of the final tactoids. In addition, substrate–liquid and liquid–liquid interfaces proved capable of accelerating LLPS of supramolecular polymers, allowing the generation of a myriad of three-dimensional-ordered structures, including highly ordered arrays of micrometre-long tactoids at surfaces. The generality and many possibilities of supramolecular polymerizations to control emerging morphologies are demonstrated with several supramolecular polymers, opening up a new field of matter ranging from highly structured aqueous solutions by means of stabilized LLPS to nanoscopic soft matter.

Amplification of asymmetry in complex molecular systems results from a delicate interplay of chiral supramolecular structures and their chemical reactivity. In this work, we show how the helicity of supramolecular assemblies can be controlled by performing a non-stereoselective methylation reaction on comonomers. By methylating chiral glutamic acid side chains in benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) derivatives to form methyl esters, the assembly properties are modulated. As reacted comonomers, the methyl ester-BTAs induce a stronger bias in the screw-sense of helical fibers predominantly composed of stacked achiral alkyl-BTA monomers. Hence, applying the in situmethylation in a system with the glutamic acid-BTA comonomer induces asymmetry amplification. Moreover, mixing small quantities of enantiomers of glutamic acid-BTA and glutamate methyl ester-BTA in the presence of the achiral alkyl-BTAs leads to deracemization and inversion of the helical structures in solution viathe in situreaction toward a thermodynamic equilibrium. Theoretical modeling suggests that the observed effects are caused by enhanced comonomer interactions after the chemical modification. Our presented methodology enables on-demand control over asymmetry in ordered functional supramolecular materials.

The radionuclide thorium-229 features an isomer with an exceptionally low excitation energy that enables direct laser manipulation of nuclear states. It constitutes one of the leading candidates for use in next-generation optical clocks1–3. This nuclear clock will be a unique tool for precise tests of fundamental physics4–9. Whereas indirect experimental evidence for the existence of such an extraordinary nuclear state is substantially older10, the proof of existence has been delivered only recently by observing the isomer’s electron conversion decay11. The isomer’s excitation energy, nuclear spin and electromagnetic moments, the electron conversion lifetime and a refined energy of the isomer have been measured12–16. In spite of recent progress, the isomer’s radiative decay, a key ingredient for the development of a nuclear clock, remained unobserved. Here, we report the detection of the radiative decay of this low-energy isomer in thorium-229 (229mTh). By performing vacuum-ultraviolet spectroscopy of 229mTh incorporated into large-bandgap CaF2and MgF2crystals at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, photons of 8.338(24) eV are measured, in agreement with recent measurements14–16and the uncertainty is decreased by a factor of seven. The half-life of 229mTh embedded in MgF2is determined to be 670(102) s. The observation of the radiative decay in a large-bandgap crystal has important consequences for the design of a future nuclear clock and the improved uncertainty of the energy eases the search for direct laser excitation of the atomic nucleus.

Oligomeric materials that spontaneously order into 2D morphologies are of interest for a broad range of applications. In the absence of molar mass dispersity, these materials are perfectly defined at the molecular level and have been shown to form sub-10 nm nanostructures. Consequently, such nanostructured oligomers exhibit intriguing properties for e.g., photophysical applications depending on their constituents. However, ab initio prediction of the obtained morphologies remains challenging. Therefore, we herein report a systematic approach to investigate the influence of molecular architecture as well as the influence of the pendant chain attached to the core on spontaneously phase-separated nanostructures. We synthesized 20 molecules containing discrete oligodimethylsiloxane (oDMS) and four different crystalline units, varying their molecular architecture and pendant chains. Lamellar morphologies were obtained most reliably using telechelic and head–tail architectures with symmetric peripheral crystalline blocks. Contrarily, these architectures in conjunction with asymmetric cores as well as core-centered architectures resulted primarily in columnar morphologies. This systematic investigation of the design parameters for 2D nanostructures aids the development of next-generation materials, e.g., nanoscale optoelectronics.

Magneto-ionics, which deals with the change of magnetic properties through voltage-driven ion migration, is expected to be one of the emerging technologies to develop energy-efficient spintronics. While a precise modulation of magnetism is achieved when voltage is applied, much more uncontrolled is the spontaneous evolution of magneto-ionic systems upon removing the electric stimuli (i.e., post-stimulated behavior). Here, we demonstrate a voltage-controllable N ion accumulation effect at the outer surface of CoN films adjacent to a liquid electrolyte, which allows for the control of magneto-ionic properties both during and after voltage pulse actuation (i.e., stimulated and post-stimulated behavior, respectively). This effect, which takes place when the CoN film thickness is below 50 nm and the voltage pulse frequency is at least 100 Hz, is based on the trade-off between generation (voltage ON) and partial depletion (voltage OFF) of ferromagnetism in CoN by magneto-ionics. This novel effect may open opportunities for new neuromorphic computing functions, such as post-stimulated neural learning under deep sleep.

Corticothalamic pathways, responsible for the top-down control of the thalamus, have a canonical organization such that every cortical region sends output from both layer 6 (L6) and layer 5 (L5) to the thalamus. Here we demonstrate a qualitative, region-specific difference in the organization of mouse corticothalamic pathways. Specifically, L5 pyramidal cells of the frontal cortex, but not other cortical regions, establish monosynaptic connections with the inhibitory thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN). The frontal L5–TRN pathway parallels the L6–TRN projection but has distinct morphological and physiological features. The exact spike output of the L5-contacted TRN cells correlated with the level of cortical synchrony. Optogenetic perturbation of the L5–TRN connection disrupted the tight link between cortical and TRN activity. L5-driven TRN cells innervated thalamic nuclei involved in the control of frontal cortex activity. Our data show that frontal cortex functions require a highly specialized cortical control over intrathalamic inhibitory processes.

This work investigates the use of blast loadings and inverse modeling for the identification of the strain rate hardening model parameters of fibre reinforced polymers. An experimental setup allowing the generation of known and predictable blast waves, leading to repeatable dynamic response in composite plates and the measurement of the displacement and strain fields, is developed. The dynamic response of the plates is measured by means of high-speed cameras and a 3D digital image correlation technique. A suitable numerical model that is able to reproduce the experimental conditions and predict the blast response of the plates is developed. Finally, the experimental measurements and the numerical calculation are combined through an inverse method in order to identify the strain rate hardening model parameters of the tensile and shear strengths of glass fibre reinforced epoxy.

AbstractBackgroundCardiac amyloidosis (CA) is often overlooked or misdiagnosed. Effects of growing disease awareness, diagnostic ameliorations and novel treatment options on CA diagnosis and management are scarcely reported.ObjectiveTo report trends in diagnosis, referral routes, clinical presentation, early onset diagnostic red flags and outcome in de novo CA subjects.MethodsAn unselected cohort of 139 de novo CA patients over an 8-year period in a tertiary referral hospital was recruited.ResultsTransthyretin (ATTR, 82%, n = 114) was the most common CA form; Light-chain (AL, 15%, n = 21) and secondary (AA, 3%, n = 4) are less prevalent. Increased awareness over time led to a marked ATTR diagnostic surge, steep non-invasive diagnostic approach increment and increased nuclear medicine and external cardiologist referrals (all p < 0.001). A total of 41% (n = 57/139) of patients were referred by non-cardiology specialist disciplines. Specific referral to rule out CA (24–36%) and diagnostic time lag from symptom onset (9 ± 12 to 8 ± 14 months), however, did not improve (all p > 0.050). Multiple early red flag events preceded CA diagnose several years in ATTR: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH, 60%, 4.9 ± 4.3 y), heart failure (54%, 2.5 ± 3.5 y), atrial fibrillation (47%, 5.9 ± 6.7 y), bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome (43%, 9.5 ± 5.7 y) and spinal stenosis (40%, 7.4 ± 6.5 y). LVH ≥ 12 mm was absent in 11% ATTR (n = 13/114) and 5% AL (n = 1/21) patients. Hypertension was common in both ATTR (n = 70/114, 62%) and AL (n = 10/21, 48%). 56% (n = 78/139) of CA presented with heart failure. Cumulative 1 and 5-year mortality of 10%/66%, 40%/52% and 75%/75% for ATTR, AL, and AA, respectively, remains high.ConclusionsAlthough CA diagnostic uptake and referral improve, specialist-specific disease and diagnostic red flag ignorance result in non-timely diagnosis and unfavourable outcome.

Background: Vision depends on the interplay between photoreceptor cells of the neural retina and the underlying retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Most genes involved in inherited retinal diseases display specific spatiotemporal expression within these interconnected retinal components through the local recruitment of cis-regulatory elements (CREs) in 3D nuclear space. Results: To understand the role of differential chromatin architecture in establishing tissue-specific expression at inherited retinal disease loci, we mapped genome-wide chromatin interactions using in situ Hi-C and H3K4me3 HiChIP on neural retina and RPE/choroid from human adult donor eyes. We observed chromatin looping between active promoters and 32,425 and 8060 candidate CREs in the neural retina and RPE/choroid, respectively. A comparative 3D genome analysis between these two retinal tissues revealed that 56% of 290 known inherited retinal disease genes were marked by differential chromatin interactions. One of these was ABCA4, which is implicated in the most common autosomal recessive inherited retinal disease. We zoomed in on retina- and RPE-specific cis-regulatory interactions at the ABCA4locus using high-resolution UMI-4C. Integration with bulk and single-cell epigenomic datasets and in vivo enhancer assays in zebrafish revealed tissue-specific CREs interacting with ABCA4. Conclusions: Through comparative 3D genome mapping, based on genome-wide, promoter-centric, and locus-specific assays of human neural retina and RPE, we have shown that gene regulation at key inherited retinal disease loci is likely mediated by tissue-specific chromatin interactions. These findings do not only provide insight into tissue-specific regulatory landscapes at retinal disease loci, but also delineate the search space for non-coding genomic variation underlying unsolved inherited retinal diseases. Polymer networks crosslinked via non-covalent interactions afford interesting materials for a wide range of applications due to their self-healing capability, recyclability, and tunable material properties. However, when strong non-covalent binding motifs in combination with high crosslink density are used, processing of the materials becomes troublesome because of high viscosities and the formation of insoluble gels. Here, we present an approach to control the processability of grafted polymers containing strong non-covalent interactions by balancing the interplay of intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonding. A library of copolymers with different degrees of polymerization and content of protected ureido-pyrimidinone-urea (UPy-urea) grafts was prepared. Photo-deprotection in a good solvent like tetrahydrofuran (THF) at low concentrations (≤1 mg mL–1) created intramolecularly assembled nanoparticles. Remarkably, the intrinsic viscosity of these nanoparticle solutions was an order of magnitude lower compared to solutions of the intermolecularly assembled analogues, highlighting the crucial role of intra- versus intermolecular interactions. Due to the strong hydrogen bonds between UPy dimers, the intramolecularly assembled structures were kinetically trapped. As a result, the polymer nanoparticles were readily processed into a bulk material, without causing major changes in the morphology as verified by atomic force microscopy. Subsequent intermolecular crosslinking of the nanoparticle film, by heating to temperatures where the hydrogen-bond exchange becomes fast, resulted in a crosslinked network. The reversibility of the hereby obtained polymer networks was shown by retrieving the intramolecularly assembled nanoparticles via redissolution and sonication of the intermolecularly crosslinked film in THF with a small amount of acid. Our results highlight that the stability and processability of highly supramolecularly crosslinked polymers can be controlled both in solution and in bulk by using the interplay of intra- and intermolecular non-covalent interactions in grafted polymers.

The assembly of donor–acceptor molecules viacharge transfer (CT) interactions gives rise to highly ordered nanomaterials with appealing electronic properties. Here, we present the synthesis and bulk co-assembly of pyrene (Pyr) and naphthalenediimide (NDI) functionalized oligodimethylsiloxanes (oDMS) of discrete length. We tune the donor–acceptor interactions by connecting the pyrene and NDI to the same oligomer, forming a heterotelechelic block molecule (NDI-oDMSPyr), and to two separate oligomers, giving Pyr and NDI homotelechelic block molecules (Pyr-oDMS and NDI-oDMS). Liquid crystalline materials are obtained for binary mixtures of Pyr-oDMS and NDI-oDMS, while crystallization of the CT dimers occurred for the heterotelechelic NDI-oDMS-Pyr block molecule. The synergy between crystallization and phase-segregation coupled with the discrete length of the oDMS units allows for perfect order and sharp interfaces between the insulating siloxane and CT layers composed of crystalline CT dimers. We were able to tune the lamellar domain spacing and donor–acceptor CT interactions by applying pressures up to 6 GPa on the material, making the system promising for soft-material nanotechnologies. These results demonstrate the importance of the molecular design to tune the CT interactions and stability of a CT material.

The microstructure of polyolefins made with a metallocene supported on a porous carrier is generally less homogeneous than when the polyolefin is made with the same unsupported metallocene. For instance, the molecular weight and chemical composition distributions of ethylene/1-olefin copolymers are often broader when they are made with a supported metallocene. In this article, a mathematical model is used to quantify this phenomenon. The polymerization of ethylene was investigated in parallel semi-batch reactors using a metallocene catalyst supported on an inorganic porous carrier. Ethylene pressure, polymerization temperature, and H2concentration were the factors changed to study ethylene polymerization kinetics with this catalyst system. Modeling results showed that a three-site model was needed to describe the molecular weight distributions of the polyethylene samples made with this catalyst.

Polymeric systems responding to chiral information are actively pursued for applications in optoelectronics and photonics. Here we report on the diastereomeric relationship between chiral liquid crystal polymers and circularly polarized light (CPL). We synthesize a chiral copolymer incorporating photoisomerizable diazobenzene moieties as well as isosorbide-based monomers. The circular dichroism of the film can be inverted by irradiation with CPL indicating that the influence of the chiral subunits on the helicity of the cholesteric arrangement can be overruled by the action of CPL. By following the out-of-equilibrium photo-switching process over time, we demonstrate that the formation of helical ordering in the chiral liquid crystal phases is much faster by CPL irradiation than by heat.We report on the diastereomeric relationship between chiral liquid crystal polymers and circularly polarized light (CPL). Materials with highly ordered nanoscale structures can translate molecular processes to macroscopic function. Here we report on the photo‐controlled organization of achiral alternating copolymers composed of discrete length blocks showing well‐defined sub‐10 nm morphologies. These alternating copolymers consist of main‐chain azobenzene building blocks alternating with discrete oDMS blocks of various precise lengths. Remarkably, we demonstrate the imprinting of a stable helical molecular arrangement in spin‐casted thin films by irradiation with circularly polarized light, without chiral dopant or plasticizer required. By following the out‐of‐equilibrium photo‐switching process over irradiation time, the mechanism of molecular reorganization is unraveled and rationalized with the nature of the morphology. Linear photo‐organization is preferentially reached with flexible and symmetric cylindrical structures while helical photo‐organization is most easily obtained with robust but rotatable lamella structures. These findings suggest that precision in the synthesis and assembly of alternating copolymers can lead to complete control over molecular organization and main‐chain motion. The photo‐controlled organization of achiral alternating copolymers composed of discrete length blocks is reported, showing well‐defined sub‐10 nm morphologies. These alternating copolymers exhibit liquid crystalline properties similar to low molecular weight liquid crystal molecules. The results unravel the structure‐property relationship between mechanisms of photo‐switching and morphologies of the copolymer assembly.

In past studies, spin selective transport was observed in polymers and supramolecular structures that are based on homochiral building blocks possessing stereocenters. Here we address the question to what extent chiral building blocks are required for observing the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect. We demonstrate the CISS effect in supramolecular polymers exclusively containing achiral monomers, where the supramolecular chirality was induced by chiral solvents that were removed from the fibers before measuring. Spin-selective transport was observed for electrons transmitted perpendicular to the fibers’ long axis. The spin polarization correlates with the intensity of the CD spectra of the polymers, indicating that the effect is nonlocal. It is found that the spin polarization increases with the samples’ thickness and the thickness dependence is the result of at least two mechanisms: the first is the CISS effect, and the second reduces the spin polarization due to scattering. Temperature dependence studies provide the first support for theoretical work that suggested that phonons may contribute to the spin polarization.

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) made from In-based III–V semiconductors are emerging as a printable infrared material. However, the formulation of infrared inks and the formation of electrically conductive QD coatings is hampered by a limited understanding of the surface chemistry of In-based QDs. In this work, we present a case study on the surface termination of IR active III–V QDs absorbing at 1220 nm that were synthesized by reducing a mixture of indium halides and an aminoarsine by an aminophosphine in oleylamine. We find that this recently established synthesis method yields In(As,P) QDs with minor phosphorus admixing and a surface terminated by a mixture of oleylamine and chloride. Exposing these QDs to protic surface-active compounds RXH, such as fatty acids or alkanethiols, initiates a ligand exchange reaction involving the binding of the conjugate base RX–and the desorption of 1 equiv of alkylammonium chloride. Using density functional theory simulations, we confirm that the formation of the alkylammonium chloride salt can provide the energy needed to drive such acid/base mediated ligand exchange reactions, even for weak organic acids such as alkanethiols. We conclude that the unique surface termination of In(As,P) QDs, consisting of a mixture of L-type and X-type ligands and acid/base mediated ligand exchange, can form a general model for In-based III–V QDs synthesized using indium halides and aminopnictogens.

Efficient fragmentation of catalyst particles during the polymerization of olefins is a necessary process to maintain catalyst activity and obtain discrete polymer particles with ideal density and morphology. Collecting experimental evidence on the fragmentation process is essential for a fundamental understanding of this phenomenon. However, visualizing the very early onset of fragmentation within catalyst particles has been proven challenging. This study investigates the development of fragmentation at different reaction conditions in an industrial SiO2-supported metallocene catalyst of the type Zr/MAO/SiO2(MAO = methylaluminoxane) early-stage of ethylene polymerization, i.e., in the range 1–20 g polyethylene per g catalyst. Focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy was employed to visualize particle cross-sections with high 2-D resolution (i.e., a few tens of nm), showing that ethylene polymerization starts at two main fronts: one at the outer surface and one at the walls of the macropores within the particle. The relative rate of polymerization at these fronts was assessed by estimating the extent of polyethylene, catalyst, and macroporosity within each cross-section viaimage segmentation. When polymerization at these fronts proceeds at similar rates, fragmentation is extensive and a combination of both layer-by-layer and bi-sectioning modes; conversely, an imbalance between the two due to unideal reaction conditions, non-homogeneous active site distribution, or insufficient macroporosity leads to a sub-optimal fragmentation. This methodology revealed a detailed understanding of catalyst fragmentation for this commercial catalyst. However, it can be applied to a broader range of polymerization catalysts and parameters, amplifying the knowledge on such an intricated phenomenon.

In the flourishing field of soft robotics, strategies to embody communication and collective motion are scarce. Here we report the synchronized oscillations of thin plastic actuators by an approach reminiscent of the synchronized motion of pendula and metronomes. Two liquid crystalline network oscillators fuelled by light influence the movement of one another and display synchronized oscillations in-phase and anti-phase in a steady state. By observing entrainment between the asymmetric oscillators we demonstrate the existence of coupling between the two actuators. We qualitatively explain the origin of the synchronized motion using a theoretical model and numerical simulations, which suggest that the motion can be tuned by the mechanical properties of the coupling joint. We thus anticipate that the complex synchronization phenomena usually observed in rigid systems can also exist in soft polymeric materials. This enables the use of new stimuli, featuring an example of collective motion by photo-actuation.

How to control the self-assembly of complex molecular systems is unknown. Yet, these complex molecular systems are fundamental for advances in material and biomedical sciences. A step forward is to transform one-step self-assembly into multistep synthesis involving covalent and noncovalent reactions. Key to this approach is to explore the chemical space at the frontiers of advanced covalent synthesis and supramolecular chemistry. Herein, we describe a selection of such reported cases and provide a guide for current limitations and insights for future directions. This outlook is meant to trigger collaborations between synthetic organic and supramolecular chemists, to expand the repertoire of organic syntheses working with supramolecular assemblies and thereby join forces to achieve stepwise emergence of molecular complexity in supramolecular systems.

Supramolecular block copolymers composed of discrete blocks have promising properties for nanotechnology resulting from their ability to combine well-defined morphologies with good bulk material properties. Here, we present the impact of a well-defined siloxane block in either the main-chain or present as pendant grafts on the properties of supramolecular block copolymers that form ordered nanostructures with sub-5 nm domains. For this, two types of supramolecular block copolymers were synthesized based on the ureidopyrimidinone–urethane (UPy-UT) motif. In the first, oligodimethylsiloxanes (oDMS) of discrete length were end-capped with the UPy-UT motif, affording main-chain UPy-UT-Sin. In the second, the UPy-UT motif was grafted with discrete oDMS affording grafted UPy-UT-g-Si7. For the two systems, the compositions are similar; only the molecular architecture differs. In both cases, crystallization of the UPy-UT block is in synergy with phase segregation of the oDMS, resulting in the formation of lamellar morphologies. The grafted UPy-UT-g-Si7can form long-range ordered lamellae, resulting in the formation of micrometer-sized 2D sheets of supramolecular polymers which show brittle properties. In contrast, UPy-UT-Sinforms a ductile material. As the compositions of both BCOs are similar, the differences in morphology and mechanical properties are a direct consequence of the molecular architecture. These results showcase how molecular design of the building block capable of forming block copolymers translates into controlled nanostructures and material properties as a result of the supramolecular nature of the interactions.

In situ synthesis of topologically modified linear polyethylenes (PE) using single-site polymerization catalysis is a challenging task, but it can enable the production of valuable advanced polymer materials with tailored properties. Described herein is an investigation aimed at the efficient generation of long-chain branches (LCB) in linear PEs using Al–alkenyl species, namely, iBuAl(oct-7-en-1-yl)2(Al-1), in combination with homogeneous rac-{EBTHI}ZrCl2(Zr-1)/MAO or heterogeneous MAO on silica-supported-rac-{EBTHI}ZrCl2(supp-Zr-1)/TIBAL catalytic systems. As corroborated by extensive rheological studies and 13C NMR spectroscopy, the Al–alkenyl reagent was found to be quite efficient in the formation of LCB, via a mechanistic pathway involving both insertion and transmetallation reactions. Formation of LCB has been rationalized by density functional theory (DFT) computations carried out on the putative [rac-{EBTHI}Zr-R]+(R = Me, nPr, and pentyl) cationic species and including a solvent model. Of the three possible isomers of Al/Zr heterobimetallic complexes derived from the cationic species [rac-{EBTHI}Zr-R]+and Al-1, only one was identified, on kinetic and thermodynamic grounds, as the key intermediate. The DFT study also unveiled that (i) insertion of ethylene into the Zr–alkyl bond of the growing PE chain is accompanied by a reversible decoordination of the Al-vinyl transfer agent (AVTA), (ii) the vinyl 1,2-coordination/insertion of the alkenyl moieties of Al-1into the Zr–alkyl bond, resulting in the formation of branching, is in direct kinetic competition with the insertion of ethylene, and (iii) the recoordination of the AVTA after either insertion step is thermodynamically favored and mostly responsible for the transmetallation phenomenon.

Supramolecular systems are intrinsically dynamic and sensitive to changes in molecular structure and external conditions. Because of these unique properties, strategies to control polymer length, composition, comonomer sequence, and morphology have to be developed for sufficient control over supramolecular copolymerizations. We designed photoresponsive, mono acyl hydrazone functionalized benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (m-BTA) monomers that play a dual role in the coassembly with achiral alkyl BTAs (a-BTA). In the Eisomer form, the chiral m-BTAmonomers intercalate into stacks of a-BTAand dictate the chirality of the helices. Photoisomerization to the Zisomer transforms the intercalator into a chain capper, allowing dynamic shortening of chain length in the supramolecular aggregates. We combine optical spectroscopy and light-scattering experiments with theoretical modeling to show the reversible decrease in length when switching from the Eto Zisomer of m-BTAin the copolymer with inert a-BTA. With a mass-balance thermodynamic model, we gain additional insights into the composition of copolymers and length distributions of the species over a broad range of concentrations and mixing ratios of a-BTA/m-BTA. Moreover, the model was used to predict the impact of an additive (chain capper and intercalator) on the chain length over a range of concentrations, showing a remarkable amplification of efficiency at high concentrations. By employing a stimuli-responsive comonomer in a mostly inert polymer, we can cooperatively amplify the effect of the switching and obtain photocontrol of polymer length. Moreover, this dynamic decrease in chain length causes a macroscopic gel-to-sol phase transformation of the copolymer gel, although 99.4% of the organogel is inert to the light stimulus.
