The lightning localization task is very interested for the meteorologist organizations, airlines, networks operators, military and etc. The electromagnetic properties of lightning can be measured using VLF sensor. Very low frequency (VLF) communication is used for long range shore-to-ship broadcasting applications. This paper proposes an architecture for high data rate VLF communication using Gaussian minimum shift keying (GMSK) modulation and low delay parity check (LDPC) channel coding. Non-data aided techniques are designed and used for carrier phase synchronization, symbol timing recovery, and LDPC code frame synchronization. These require the estimation of the operative Eb/N0 for which a kurtosis based algorithm is used. Also, a method for modeling the probability density function of the received signal under the bit condition is presented in this regard. The modeling of atmospheric radio noise (ARN) that corrupts VLF signals is described and an algorithm for signal enhancement in the presence of ARN in given. The BER performance of the communication system is evaluated for bit rates of 400 bps, 600 bps, and 800 bps for communication bandwidth of ~200 Hz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three-dimensional linearized nonlinear electromagnetic inversion is developed for revealing the subsurface conductivity structure using isolated very low frequency (VLF) and VLF-resistivity anomalies due to conductors that may be arbitrarily directed towards the measuring profiles and the VLF transmitter. We described the 3D model using a set of variables in terms of geometric and physical parameters. These model parameters were then optimized (parametric inversion) to obtain their best estimates to fit the observations. Two VLF transmitters, i.e., the Hx, Ey ("E") and the Hy, Ex ("H") polarizations, respectively, can be considered jointly in inversion. After inverting several noise-free and noisy synthetic data, the results revealed that the estimated model parameters and the functionality of the approach were very good and reliable. The inversion procedure also worked well for the field data. The reliability and validity of the results after the field data inversion have been checked using data from a shear zone associated with uranium mineralization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: To investigate downward ionospheric-penetration characteristics of VLF (several hundred Hz to 17.8 kHz) whistler-mode waves, we conducted simultaneous observations (in 2006) of natural VLF waves using both ground stations in Antarctica and the Japanese Akebono satellite. The ground-based and satellite observations included an interesting event for which both observed similar VLF waves. In this study, we theoretically calculate down-going whistler-mode wave propagation based on ground-satellite observations using the full-wave analysis. In a case study, the observed wave-normal angles were approximately 140–160 degrees for a dayside chorus event on 15 March 2006. The theoretical calculation showed that the wave-normal angles for ionospheric penetration should be around 155.6 degrees, with its angular width of approximately 2 degrees. Moreover, the wave-energy loss due to ionospheric penetration is estimated at 20.4 dB based on our theoretical calculation, in accordance with the observed 17–19 dB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
