Vitamin D deficiency is a global problem, and 13 to 75% of patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty (TJA) have vitamin D deficiency. Several studies have shown that low preoperative vitamin D levels may increase the risk of postoperative complications, including periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), in patients undergoing primary TJA. Most of the studies are underpowered. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and surgical and medical complications after primary TJA, with a specific focus on PJI. Prospectively collected institutional multicenter arthroplasty databases were reviewed to identify patients who underwent primary total knee and hip arthroplasty. The study group was defined as patients whose vitamin D level is < 30 ng/dL and who received a single oral dose of 7.5 mg (300,000 IU) D3 within two weeks before index surgery (n = 488; mean age 63 years). Patients in the control group were those whose preoperative vitamin D levels were unknown and who did not receive vitamin D supplementation (n = 592, mean age 66). The groups were compared regarding 90-day medical and surgical complications, including PJI, mortality, and readmission rates. The total number of complications (8.6 and 4.3%; respectively; P =.005), superficial wound infection (2.5 and 0.2%, respectively; P <.001), and postoperative cellulitis (2.2 and 0% respectively; P <.001) were statistically significantly higher in the patient group who did not receive vitamin D supplementation. However, 90-day mortality (P =.524), PJI (P =.23), and readmission rate (P =.683) were similar between the groups. This study demonstrated that preoperative optimization of vitamin D levels may be beneficial in reducing postoperative complications, including superficial wound infection and postoperative cellulitis. The moral imperative of public health systems is to maximize the health and welfare of the population to the extent possible. Constraints often include a lack of resources, political will, popular acceptance, or an acceptable safety margin. Major agencies have established iron, iodine, and vitamin A as the principal elements for micronutrients, with folate and zinc on the second plane. As the armamentarium of interventions to favor micronutrient nutrition, for example, preventive health measures, dietary improvement, forms of fortification, and nutrient supplements, is offered in public health policy. The utility of their merger with other nutrients, emergent nutrients, has been considered. The Latin America and Caribbean Region has unique characteristics. The scientific and epidemiology considerations for action in the Region's health concern on 4 emergent nutrient deficiencies of public health—vitamins D and E, essential fatty acids, and choline—are reviewed. International werden NEM im Sport häufig in die Kategorien Sports Food, Medical Supplements und Performance Supplements unterteilt. Der folgende Beitrag soll einen Überblick über ausgewählte NEM geben. The consumption of dietary supplements is widespread among athletes but also among the population. The range of dietary supplements has increased significantly in recent years. Before being placed on the market, food supplements only need to be notified. In contrast to pharmaceuticals, there is no testing for efficacy and safety and must be guaranteed by the manufacturer. Internationally, food supplements in sports are often divided into the categories of sports food, medical supplements and performance supplements. The circulating vitamin D level that is optimal for health is unknown. This study aimed to examine the association between circulating vitamin D level and risk of all-cause and cause-specific mortality. This prospective cohort study included 18,797 Korean adults aged 40 years or older, living in rural areas, with no history of cancer or cardiovascular disease (CVD) at baseline. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels were measured at baseline. Participants were followed-up from the survey date (2005–2012) until December 31, 2021. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for mortality by baseline vitamin D level. Restricted cubic splines were used to explore the nonlinearity. The median (interquartile range) of 25(OH)D level was 55.8 (40.8–71.8) nmol/L. During a median follow-up of 14.3 years, 2250 deaths were recorded. Compared with participants with a 25(OH)D level <30 nmol/L, higher vitamin D levels (30 to < 50, 50 to < 75, and ≥75 nmol/L) were associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality: HR (95% CI) of 0.82 (0.69–0.98), 0.74 (0.62–0.88), and 0.69 (0.57–0.84), respectively. A nonlinear relationship between vitamin D level and all-cause mortality was observed, with the risk plateauing between 50 and 60 nmol/L (p for nonlinearity = 0.009). The association was more pronounced for cancer-related mortality. HR 0.55 (95% CI: 0.39–0.77) for a 25(OH)D level ≥75 nmol/L compared with <30.0 nmol/L. Low vitamin D levels were associated with increased CVD mortality in men. Vitamin D level was inversely associated with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in middle-aged and older adults. Vitamin D is known to influence the risk of cardiovascular disease, which is a recognized risk factor for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). However, the relationship between vitamin D and SCA is not well understood. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the association between vitamin D and SCA in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients compared to healthy controls. Using the Phase II Cardiac Arrest Pursuit Trial with Unique Registration and Epidemiologic Surveillance (CAPTURES II) registry, a 1:1 propensity score-matched case-control study was conducted between 2017 and 2020. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (vitamin D) levels in patients with OHCA (454 cases) and healthy controls (454 cases) were compared after matching for age, sex, cardiovascular risk factors, and lifestyle behaviors. The mean vitamin D levels were 14.5 ± 7.6 and 21.3 ± 8.3 ng/mL among SCA cases and controls, respectively. Logistic regression analysis was used adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors, lifestyle behaviors, corrected serum calcium levels, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGRF). The adjusted odds ratio (aOR) for vitamin D was 0.89 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.87–0.91). The dose-response relationship demonstrated that vitamin D deficiency was associated with SCA incidence (severe deficiency, aOR 10.87, 95% CI 4.82–24.54; moderate deficiency, aOR 2.24, 95% CI 1.20–4.20). Background: Preeclampsia is a life-threatening multisystem disorder of pregnancy which has been observed in 2%–10% of pregnancies. The prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency ranges from 15% to 80%. Deficiency of Vitamin D is associated with the development of preeclampsia. This study was done to find out the prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency among preeclamptic/eclamptic and normal pregnant females, to establish Vitamin D deficiency as a causal factor of preeclampsia, and to elucidate the relation between 25 (OH) Vitamin D status and the severe preeclampsia. Materials and Methods: Blood samples were collected from 50 normotensives (controls) and 50 hypertensive pregnant females with preeclampsia/eclampsia (cases), and 25 (OH) Vitamin D level was measured by chemiluminescence Immunoassay. Results: Among the preeclamptic/eclamptic group, 32 (64%) were noted with Vitamin D deficiency and 18 (36%) with Vitamin D insufficiency. In the control group, 30 (60%) pregnant women showed Vitamin D deficiency, 19 (38%) with Vitamin D insufficiency, and a sufficient level of Vitamin D was observed in one woman (2%). Conclusion: Although it is difficult to demonstrate the correlation between Vitamin D levels and preeclampsia, there is a widespread global prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy. Background: The pancreas contains Vitamin D (Vit.-D) and an enzyme that regulates insulin levels. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with several severe health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, various cancers, and multiple sclerosis (MS). Therefore, the objective of the current study is to investigate the correlation between Vitamin D levels and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in both patients and controls. Materials and Methods: The study enrolled 163 T2DM (Group I) and 174 healthy (Group II) subjects to estimate the level of Vit.-D and HbA1c in the blood serum of all subjects, using radioimmunoassay and high-performance liquid chromatography, respectively. Results: The results revealed that Group I had a lower level of Vit.-D (17.82 ± 2.23 ng/mL) than Group II. Similarly, they have high HbA1c levels, showing significant (P < 0.001; Student's t -test). Further, in Group I, Vit.-D levels were negatively correlated with HbA1c levels (P < 0.001; r2 = 0.07, linear regression). Group I and II combined analysis revealed an inverse relationship between Vit.-D levels and HbA1c (P < 0.001; r2 = 0.021). Conclusion: The study concluded a negative correlation between Vit.-D levels and HbA1c levels in T2DM. However, Vit.-D therapy can recover this correlation, which helps control glycemic levels. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common disease during pregnancy that has adverse effects on both the mother and fetus. There are currently rare researches on the effect of vitamin supplementation on GDM pregnant mother and their offspring on animal and cell levels systematically. This work supplemented the GDM pregnant mouse model with vitamin D and found that vitamin D can effectively alleviate the hyperglycemia in GDM pregnant mice, increase blood insulin and adiponectin concentrations, and improve GTT and ITT in pregnant mice. In addition, vitamin D can reduce the incidence of death and high birth weight of offspring caused by GDM. The offspring of GDM pregnant mice had higher blood glucose levels in the first 5 weeks after birth compared to the normal group, and then returned to normal levels. Vitamin D can alleviate abnormal glucose metabolism in newborn mice. The therapeutic effect exhibited by vitamin D may be due to their anti-inflammatory effects, as vitamin D supplementation significantly reduces the levels of TFN-α, MCP-1, IL-1β and IL-8 in the blood. Vitamin D also regulates liver lipid metabolism, resulting in a decrease in liver lipid accumulation and a decrease in blood triglycerides (TG) and cholesterol (CHO). Introduction: Cardiovascular and noncardiovascular comorbidities have been recognized as predictors of clinical response in patients receiving cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). However, data on vitamin D as a predictor of CRT response are conflicting. Method: We identified studies from MEDLINE and Embase databases, searching from inception to May 2024, to investigate the association between 25‐OH vitamin D levels before CRT implantation and outcomes. Studies had to report 25‐OH vitamin D levels or the proportion of patients with vitamin D insufficiency and categorize outcomes as CRT responders or nonresponders. We extracted mean 25‐OH vitamin D and standard deviations for both groups from each study and calculated the pooled mean difference (MD). We also retrieved risk ratios, and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between vitamin D insufficiency and lack of CRT response, combining them using the generic inverse variance method. Results: Our meta‐analysis included four studies. CRT responders had higher levels of 25‐OH vitamin D than nonresponders, with a pooled MD of 8.04 ng/mL (95% CI: 3.16–12.93; I2 = 48%, p <.001). Patients with vitamin D insufficiency before implantation had higher odds of lacking response to CRT, with a pooled RR of 3.28 (95% CI: 1.43–7.50; I2 = 0%, p =.005) compared to those with normal vitamin D. Conclusions: CRT responders had higher 25‐OH vitamin D levels compared to nonresponders. Vitamin D insufficiency was associated with a higher risk of nonresponse to CRT. OBJECTIVE: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a multifactorial disease characterized principally by chronic, widespread pain impairing a patient's quality of life. The management of FM requires a multidisciplinary approach that combines pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies. Growing evidence suggests a potential beneficial role of micronutrients such as minerals and vitamins. Overall, the role of these supplements remains controversial, but clinical trials on vitamin D, vitamin B12, magnesium, and iron supplementation seem to provide promising results. The aim of this study was to investigate their role in an Italian female sample. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: An exploratory cross-sectional study was done to assess the association of selected micronutrients with symptoms of FM by using the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) in twenty consecutive female patients with FM. A literature review was also conducted. RESULTS: FIQ results revealed that vitamin D and magnesium deficiency appear to play a role in FM symptoms, mainly in physical function and stiffness. From the literature review, only two studies investigating the role of micronutrients in FM were retrieved. CONCLUSIONS: Screening for micronutrient deficiencies in FM patients and supplementing them when levels are low might help counteract FM symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using the 30-question Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-30), we tested the hypothesis that Vitamin D (VD) status was associated with self-reported depressive symptoms in a multiethnic aging sample in rural West Texas. • What is the main finding of this study? A significant negative association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin-D levels and depressive symptoms was revealed, spanning both Dysphoria and Meaninglessness GDS subfactors. Hispanic/Latino ethnicity (HLE) populations were overrepresented in VD deficiency (VDD) and VD insufficiency (VDI) categories, and less likely to use VD supplements compared to non-HLE populations. • What is the meaning of the finding? Based on widespread VDD/VDI in our HLE sample, use of VD supplementation at high sufficient doses is predicted to reduce depressive symptoms. A subset of GDS Dysphoria questions were highly sensitive to VD status, providing important knowledge for VD screening in the clinic. To determine associations between Vitamin D (VD) levels and clinical depression through the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and its questions and subdomains, stratified by demographics and Hispanic/Latino ethnicity (HLE). A cohort of 299 Project FRONTIER participants aged 62.6 ± 11.7 years old, 70.9% female, and 40.5% HLE were used. Standard correlation and regression analyses were employed. The main outcome measures were VD (serum 25(OH)-VD) level, GDS-30 (30-item questionnaire), GDS-30 subfactors and questions, and HLE status. VD categories were defined as VD deficiency (VDD; ≤20 ng/mL), VD insufficiency (VDI; 21–29 ng/mL), VD sufficiency (30–38 ng/mL) and high VD sufficiency (>38 ng/mL). The majority (61.5%) of samples fell into VDD/VDI categories. A significant negative association was found between VD level and GDS-30 total score. VD level was negatively correlated with Dysphoria and Meaninglessness GDS-30 subfactors. Although GDS subfactors were similar between HLE and non-HLE groups, VD levels were significantly lower in HLE samples. Finally, HLE/non-HLE groups were differentially stratified across VD categories. Only 4% of HLEs fell into the high VD sufficient category, suggesting low VD supplementation. A significant negative association between VD level and depressive symptoms was revealed in our aging Project FRONTIER participants. HLE individuals were overrepresented in VDD/VDI samples, and VDD/VDI was associated primarily with the Dysphoria GDS subdomain. Regression analysis predicted high VD sufficiency (95.5 ng/mL) to be associated with no depressive symptoms (GDS=0). Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is a rare cardiac condition arising from abnormal embryologic development of the annulus fibrosus in combination with the cardiac conduction system. The abnormality results in the development of accessory pathways and preexcitation changes which can provoke episodes of tachyarrhythmias. The most common presentation of WPW syndrome is supraventricular tachycardia. Beyond customary abortive therapy, chronic management strategies vary based upon timing and clinical severity of the initial disease presentation. Prompt diagnosis and rate control have a dramatic impact on the outcomes of morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this article is to present a case study of a preterm infant who manifested with WPW syndrome. Additionally, the article will explore the pathophysiology of WPW syndrome and the timing and presentation of common clinical manifestations of the disease, along with current diagnostic and treatment strategies to achieve optimal patient outcomes in the neonatal population. Adequate serum vitamin D levels correlate with a more favorable lipid profile compared to deficient levels. Despite the well-established prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in children with obesity, studies investigating its influence on lipid profiles in this population are scarce. We explored the impact of vitamin D status on lipid profiles and markers of atherogenic dyslipidemia in a cohort of children and adolescents with obesity. A total of 271 Caucasian children and adolescents with overweight/obesity and a control group of 54 pediatric patients with normal weight. All participants underwent outpatient visits for the assessment of clinical parameters and venous blood collection for biochemical analysis such as triglycerides (TG)/HDL-C ratio, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, atherogenic index of plasma AIP), vitamin D level. Individuals with obesity displayed severe vitamin D deficiency (25-OH-D ≤10 ng/ml) at a higher frequency compared to those with normal weight (p = 0.03). In patients with overweight/obesity and low 25-OH-D levels show higher values of glycemia (p = 0.001), insulin resistance (HOMA-IR and TRYG p < 0.001), TG (p < 0.001), TG/HDL-C (p = 0.001), AIP (p < 0.001), SBP (p = 0.01), and DBP (p = 0.04). In normal-weight individuals with low 25-OH- D levels an increased values of glycemia (p = 0.01), insulin resistance (HOMA-IR p = 0.01 and TRYG p = 0.002), TG (p = 0.01), TG/HDL-C (p = 0.02), AIP (p = 0.01). A direct correlation between 25-OH-D levels and metabolic parameters is observed. A correlation between vitamin D levels and the lipid/atherosclerotic profile was recorded. The relationship between vitamin D and cardiovascular health (CVH) in children remains unclear. We aimed to explore the association between vitamin D and CVH metrics using the latest Life's Essential 8 (LE8) among Chinese children and adolescents. A cross-sectional study containing 2680 participants aged 7–18 years (1340 boys and 1340 girls) was performed in South China in 2013. Vitamin D levels were categorized as follows: ≥20 ng/mL (sufficiency), 12 - < 20 ng/mL (inadequacy), and <12 ng/mL (deficiency). The CVH metrics of LE8 was assessed by overall CVH score, health behavior score, health factor score and high CVH, among which the health behaviors included diet, physical activity, nicotine exposure, and sleep health, as well as the health factors contained body mass index, blood lipids, blood glucose, and blood pressure. Different regression models were used to assess the associations between vitamin D levels and CVH metrics of LE8. Results showed that the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and inadequacy was 7.5% and 44.4%, respectively. Boys had lower levels in overall CVH score, health behavior score, and health factor score than girls. After adjusting for potential confounds, upward trends in diet score, health behavior score, and high CVH were observed with increasing vitamin D levels. Under inflammatory conditions, macrophage dominance affects the degree of inflammation. We assessed the effects of the active vitamin D (calcitriol) administration on inflammatory processes and macrophage dominance and aimed to determine the potential positive macroscopic and histological effects in supermicrosurgical arterial anastomosis model of rats. Forty rats were divided into five groups: control surgery (Group 1), surgery with preoperative (Group 2), post-operative (Group 3), perioperative (Group 4) systemic calcitriol and surgery with local calcitriol (Group 5). Eighty femoral artery anastomoses were planned in both legs of rats. Systemic calcitriol was administered intraperitoneally daily to the animals in the relevant groups. Preoperative vessel diameter measurements were taken before anastomosis. Three weeks post-surgery, post-operative vessel diameter measurements were taken, anastomosis patency was assessed and vascular segments were collected for histological examination, which included assessment of M1 and M2 macrophage depolarisation, leucocyte infiltration, intima–media ratio and luminal gap scoring. Systemic calcitriol administration (pre-, post- or perioperative) significantly improved the vessel diameter (p < 0.001); there was no significant difference among Groups 2–4. Histological findings revealed that Groups 3 and 4 had lower intima–media ratios (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01), higher M2-M1 macrophage ratios (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001) and lower leucocyte infiltration (p < 0.05, p < 0.01 and p < 0.001). Local calcitriol administration had no vasodilatory effects or resulted in positive histological outcomes. Although the administration of calcitriol pre- and post-operatively increased the vessel diameter, the latter appeared to have a more favourable impact on the histological analyses. Vitamin D deficiency is a common cause of secondary hyperparathyroidism, particularly in elderly people. The aim of this study was to evaluate the associations of serum vitamin D and parathormone (PTH) concentrations with blood pressure values and hypertension-mediated target organ damage (HMOD), including left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy and carotid plaque (CP). We enrolled consecutive patients admitted to the Hypertension Center of Federico II University Hospital in Naples, Italy. All patients underwent carotid doppler ultrasound and echocardiography, measurement of vitamin D and PTH levels and main clinical and laboratory parameters. A total of 126 patients (mean age 54 years, 68% males) were enrolled. Pearson's correlation analysis indicated that PTH levels directly correlated with age, diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, fasting glucose, and LV mass, and inversely with glomerular filtration rate, LDL cholesterol, and vitamin D. Vitamin D levels correlated inversely with PTH, diabetes and CP. Multivariate regression models indicated that an increased LV mass was associated with the presence of obesity (β = 0.342; P = 0.001). Maximal intima-media thickness was significantly associated with older age (β = 0.303; P = 0.033). Combined presence of low vitamin D/high PTH levels were associated with more than 4-fold increased risk of having CP in both univariate (OR = 4.77, p = 0.0001) and multivariate regression analysis (OR = 4.52, p = 0.014). In a population at high cardiovascular risk, vitamin D and PTH levels were not directly associated with blood pressure values and HMOD. Introduction: The objective of this study is to comprehensively evaluate fracture type, category of nonunion, and metabolic profile to identify metabolic causes that may impact fracture union. Methods: A retrospective chart review of patients diagnosed with nonunion after fracture fixation was performed. Patient demographics, fracture characteristics, and metabolic profiles were assessed. Results: Data was collected from 94 patients with nonunion, with a mean age of 54.7 years, 50% men, 47.3% obese, and 60.8% current/former smokers. The most common nonunited bone was the femur (48%), tibia (22%), humerus (15%), ulna (5%), clavicle (3%), and fibula (2%). The distal femur, femoral shaft, and tibial shaft made up 50% of the nonunion. The intra-articular fracture was diagnosed in 13% and open injuries in 27%. The most common metabolic abnormalities were low hemoglobin (62.3%), elevated neutrophil percentage (61.9%), elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate in women (51.8%), low testosterone (46.9%), and hypovitaminosis D (44.3%). Conclusion: The prevalence of metabolic abnormalities was documented across all nonunion types, suggesting this is not unique to atrophic nonunion. Given the high morbidity and cost of nonunion, and low cost of vitamin supplementation, future prospective studies are warranted to identify effective prevention and treatment. Many determinants of vitamin D status have been well-described, yet supplementation guidelines largely follow a one-size-for-all model and deficiency remains common. We hypothesised that accounting accurately for ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation and considering interactions could advance understanding of vitamin D status. Asian, Black, and White participants from the UK Biobank cohort were included (N = 438,978). The Tropospheric Emission Monitoring Internet Service provided UVB data which we linked to participants' place of residence. UVB dose over 135 days prior to blood draw was weighted and added, yielding cumulative and weighted UVB (CW-D-UVB). The association between 25(OH)D and selected variables was assessed in multivariable linear regression models with and without interactions, stratified by ethnicity. Predictors were ranked using standardised β-coefficients. Median 25(OH)D differed by ethnicity (Asian: 25.4 nmol/L (10.2 ng/mL), Black: 30.6 nmol/L (12.2 ng/mL), White: 47.9 nmol/L (19.2 ng/mL), p-value < 0.001). CW-D-UVB was strongly associated with 25(OH)D in all ethnicities. It was the most important predictor in White (β Asian = 0.15, β Black = 0.20, β White = 0.35), whereas supplementation was in Asian and Black participants (β Asian = 0.30, β Black = 0.24, β White = 0.21). We identified statistically significant interactions between BMI:supplementation (all), CW-D-UVB:sex (Asian and White), and CW-D-UVB:age (Black and White), and in White population between CW-D-UVB and supplementation, BMI, and cholesterol. Vitamin D deficiency was widespread, particularly among non-White individuals. UVB was a strong predictor of 25(OH)D and the effect was modified by other factors. Findings suggest that accurately measured ambient-UVB radiation and interactions could improve 25(OH)D prediction models, and support personalised approaches to vitamin D optimisation. Studies show a high prevalence of osteoporosis and fracture risk in kidney transplant candidates and recipients. However, little is known about the prevalence of osteoporosis among transplant recipients and candidates living with HIV. To determine the prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis and investigate the socio-demographic and nutritional factors associated with BMD in HIV-positive transplant candidates and recipients from an HIV-positive donor. In this cross-sectional study, 20 HIV- positive transplant recipients and 36 transplant candidates on haemodialysis (HD) and awaiting transplantation had BMD and body composition measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Vitamin D status was measured using serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D]. Dietary Vitamin D and calcium intake was obtained from a single 24-hour recall. Participants were mainly black African (92.9%), male (55.4%) with a mean age of 43.8 ± 8.3 years. Serum 25(OH)D levels were low for the group as a whole, with a mean of 22.04 ± 12.74 ng/ml. Osteoporosis was more prevalent amongst transplant recipients (20.0%) than transplant candidates (13.9%). Conversely, osteopenia was present amongst transplant candidates (27.8%). T-scores strongly correlated positively, with lean mass and BMD of the spine (r = 0.707, p = 0.007), and moderately, with each side of the total hip BMD (r = 0.455, p = 0.007 and r = 0.420, p = 0.007). There was a significant positive association between dietary calcium and all BMD sites in transplant recipients only. The prevalence of osteoporosis was similar, and in some cases, lower than in transplant recipients elsewhere. Lean mass was positively associated with BMD, and in transplant recipients, dietary calcium intake was positively associated with BMD emphasising the role of diet and exercise in preserving BMD. Background: Historically regarded as a protective barrier organ, the skin is now recognized as an active endocrine organ capable of synthesizing, and secreting diverse hormones and signaling molecules. This review intends to investigate the endocrine function of the epidermis, focusing on its role in hormone synthesis, metabolism, and signaling pathways. Objective: This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the endocrine function of the skin, including the identification of key hormones generated in the skin, their regulation, and their physiological significance. In addition, it intends to investigate the relationship between the epidermis and the endocrine system to elucidate the mechanisms underlying hormonal communication within the body. Methodology: Using electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, a comprehensive search of the literature was conducted. Included are relevant studies, evaluations, and articles published between 1990 and 2023. The search strategy centered on the epidermis, endocrine function, hormones, and signaling pathways-related keywords. The retrieved literature was evaluated, and significant findings were analyzed. Results: The epidermis produces and responds to numerous hormones, including corticosteroids, sex hormones, thyroid hormones, Vitamin D, and growth factors, according to the findings. These hormones influence processes, including hair growth, wound healing, immune response, inflammation, and cell proliferation. In addition, the epidermis functions as a target for circulating hormones, participating in feedback loops, and regulating endocrine homeostasis. Conclusion: The skin's endocrine function extends beyond its barrier function to play a significant role in hormonal regulation and communication. Enlightening the precise mechanisms and clinical implications of the endocrine function of the epidermis is necessary for the development of novel therapeutic approaches and interventions. Vitamin D deficiency is a common cardiovascular risk factor associated with the development of atherosclerosis. We evaluated changes in 25(OH)D concentrations in 1510 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) over a long observation period, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients were separated into four groups according to the year of enrolment, group 1 (2009–2010), group 2 (2014–2016), group 3 (2017–2019), and group 4 (2020–2022). The median 25(OH)D concentration in the overall cohort was 17.15 (10.3–24.7) ng/mL. The median plasma concentrations of 25(OH)D for groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 14.45 (7.73–22.58) ng/mL, 17.3 ng/mL (10.33–24.2), 18.95 (11.6–26.73) ng/mL and 19.05 (12.5–27.3) ng/mL, respectively. Although 25(OH)D levels increased over the years, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency remained high in each group (68.4%, 61.4%, 53.8%, and 52% respectively). Hypovitaminosis D was predicted by the season influence (OR:2.03, p < 0.0001), higher body mass index (OR:1.25; p = 0.001), diabetes mellitus (OR:1.54; p = 0.001), smoking (OR:1.47; p = 0.001), older age (OR:1.07; p = 0.008), higher triglycerides levels (OR:1.02; p = 0.01), and female gender (OR:1.3; p = 0.038). After multivariable adjustment, vitamin D ≤ 20 ng/mL was an independent predictor of mortality. Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent and persistent in patients with AMI despite a trend towards increasing 25(OH)D concentrations over the years. The frequent lockdowns did not reduce the levels of 25(OH)D in the fourth group. Low levels of 25(OH)D are an independent predictor of mortality. Diabetes retinopathy (DR) is a common microvascular complication of diabetes, and it is the main cause of global vision loss. The current observational research results show that the causal relationship between Vitamin D and DR is still controversial. Therefore, we conducted a Mendelian randomization study to determine the potential causal relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D 25(OH)D and DR. In this study, we selected aggregated data on serum 25(OH)D levels (GWAS ID: ebi-a-GCST90000615) and DR (GWAS ID: finn-b-DM_RETINOPATHY) from a large-scale GWAS database. Then use MR analysis to evaluate the possible causal relationship between them. We mainly use inverse variance weighted (IVW), supplemented by MR Egger and weighted median methods. Sensitivity analysis is also used to ensure the stability of the results, such as Cochran's Q-test, MR-PRESSO, MR-Egger interception test, and retention method. The MR analysis results showed that there was no significant causal relationship between 25(OH)D and DR (OR = 1.0128, 95%CI=(0.9593,1.0693), P = 0.6447); Similarly, there was no significant causal relationship between DR and serum 25 (OH) D levels (OR = 0.9900, 95% CI=(0.9758,1.0045), P = 0.1771). Our study found no significant causal relationship between serum 25(OH)D levels and DR, and vice versa. Tendons are vital components of the musculoskeletal system, facilitating movement and supporting mechanical loads. Emerging evidence suggests that vitamin D, beyond its well-established role in bone health, exerts significant effects on tendon physiology. The aim of this manuscript is to review the impact of vitamin D on tendons, focusing on its mechanisms of action, clinical implications, and therapeutic applications. A comprehensive search of scientific electronic databases was conducted to identify articles on the effects of vitamin D on tendon health. Fourteen studies were included in this review. Five studies were performed in vitro, and nine studies were conducted in vivo. Despite some conflicting results, the included studies showed that vitamin D regulates collagen synthesis, inflammation, and mineralization within tendons through its interaction with vitamin D receptors. Epidemiological studies link vitamin D deficiency with tendon disorders, including tendinopathy and impaired healing. Supplementation with vitamin D shows promise in improving tendon strength and function, particularly in at-risk populations such as athletes and the elderly. Future research should address optimal supplementation strategies and explore the interplay between vitamin D and other factors influencing tendon health. Biliary atresia (BA) is the most common cause of neonatal cholestasis, negatively affecting nutritional status, growth, and development. It is the most frequent paediatric indication for liver transplantation. The Kasai portoenterostomy (KPE) operation is an effective procedure with favourable outcomes when performed before two months of age. The present study aimed to assess the nutritional status of patients with biliary atresia who underwent the Kasai operation and to evaluate the effectiveness of nutritional counselling using medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) formulas and proper supplementation on their nutritional status, growth, and vitamin D levels. This prospective observational study included 36 infants with biliary atresia who underwent Kasai portoenterostomy. All patients underwent clinical assessment, anthropometric evaluation, nutritional counselling, and an evaluation of vitamin D levels. Only compliant patients (22/36) were followed up after 3 and 6 months of nutritional counselling. Z-scores for weight, triceps skinfold thickness, and mid-upper arm circumference improved significantly after three months, and the height velocity Z-score improved after six months of nutritional counselling using an MCT-containing formula and supplementations. Patients who showed an improvement in cholestasis had better responses. The initial assessment revealed low serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D in 77.8 %, which increased significantly (p = 0.012). The active metabolite of vitamin D has an anti-inflammatory effect by decreasing the expression and generating several pro-inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, IL-8 and increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines such IL-5, IL-10, and IL-5. The active metabolite of vitamin D 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D3) has a high compatibility and specificity for nVDR (nuclear receptor/ Vitamin D Receptor). The method used is an in-silico test. The ligand structure and target protein were downloaded from the PubChem NCBI database and docked with computational software Discovery Studio 21.1.1. version and Hex Cuda 8.0.0. This study showed the types of bonds between vitamin D and three compounds, including hydrophobic interactions, unfavourable bonds, and hydrogen bonds. The binding energy values of each of the three compounds were TNF-α -312.66 kJ/mol, IL-1β -267.17 kJ/mol, and VDR -301.41 kJ/mol. The lowest binding energy of the ligand-target protein complex indicates the strongest bond between ligand and target protein. The active metabolite of vitamin D has an anti-inflammatory effect on pro-inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α and IL-1β. Introduction: Hereditary vitamin D resistant rickets (HVDRR) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder marked by end-organ resistance of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D secondary to various mutations in the vitamin D receptor gene. The currently accepted treatment modality involves bypassing the affected receptors in the gut with high-dose intravenous calcium. In a few limited case reports, cinacalcet, a calcimimetic, has been used as an adjunctive therapy. Material and methods: Retrospective chart reviews were conducted to collect the clinical and biochemical data of 8 patients with HVDRR from 5 Saudi families. Four patients received only high-dose calcium, while the remaining 4 received adjuvant cinacalcet. Serum chemistry and PTH levels were measured before and during cinacalcet treatment. Gene sequencing was performed to identify the disease-causing mutation. Results: All 8 patients exhibited alopecia and secondary hyperparathyroidism. Other clinical and biochemical features of rickets were present to varying degrees. Genetic analysis revealed 3 distinct mutations: a ligand-binding domain mutation in 3 unrelated patients, a ligand-binding domain mutation in 2 sisters, and a missense DNA-binding domain mutation in 3 brothers. While the overall response to therapy was variable, none of the 4 patients who received adjunctive cinacalcet developed hypocalcaemia, and there was some initial promise in improving serum PTH levels. Conclusion: This series provides new insight into the clinical and biochemical characteristics as well as treatment responses in Saudi children with HVDRR. The findings suggest that cinacalcet is a safe and potentially valuable adjuvant in this understudied population; however, further research is required to verify these results. Aim of the study: To investigate the hypothesis that the presence of prenatal maternal stress, increased level of prenatal testosterone, and low level of vitamin D3 in pregnancy is associated with the development of ADHD-like symptoms in toddlers (< 2 years old). Material and methods: The study group comprised 53 pregnant women and 53 infants of these pregnancies. The population cohort of 53 pregnant women were recruited at their 35th to 37th week of pregnancy and investigated prospectively. The participants were selected through targeted selection. Maternal experience of stressful life events was assessed by stress standardised questionnaires, prenatal testosterone was determined in the mothers' saliva by using the immune enzymatic (ELISA) method, and maternal plasma D vitamin was measured using the ECLIA method, during pregnancy. When the age of the offspring was 6 months and then less than 2 years, the mothers completed the child behaviour and temperament checklist. Results: A small but statistically significant association was found between the common symptom complex of ADHD and the level of testosterone and vitamin D3, in the presence of prenatal maternal stress. Multiple regression analysis showed that maternal stressful events during pregnancy significantly predicted ADHD behaviours in offspring. Conclusion: The study supported the hypothesis that prenatal maternal stress, increased level of prenatal testosterone, and low level of vitamin D3 during pregnancy increases the risk of development of ADHD-like symptoms in toddlers (< 2 years old). [Display omitted] Ectopic lymphoid tissues (eLTs) and associated follicular helper T (T FH) cells contribute to local immunoglobulin hyperproduction in nasal polyps (NPs). Follicular regulatory T (T FR) cells in secondary lymphoid organs counteract T FH cells and suppress immunoglobulin production; however, the presence and function of T FR cells in eLTs in peripheral diseased tissues remain poorly understood. We sought to investigate the presence, phenotype, and function of T FR cells in NPs. The presence, abundance, and phenotype of T FR cells in NPs were examined using single-cell RNA sequencing, immunofluorescence staining, and flow cytometry. Sorted polyp and circulating T-cell subsets were cocultured with autologous circulating naïve B cells, and cytokine and immunoglobulin production were measured by ELISA. T FR cells were primarily localized within eLTs in NPs. T FR cell frequency and T FR cell/T FH cell ratio were decreased in NPs with eLTs compared with NPs without eLTs and control inferior turbinate tissues. T FR cells displayed an overlapping phenotype with T FH cells and FOXP3+ regulatory T cells in NPs. Polyp T FR cells had reduced CTLA-4 expression and decreased capacity to inhibit T FH cell–induced immunoglobulin production compared with their counterpart in blood and tonsils. Blocking CTLA-4 abolished the suppressive effect of T FR cells. Lower vitamin D receptor expression was observed on polyp T FR cells compared with T FR cells in blood and tonsils. Vitamin D treatment upregulated CTLA-4 expression on polyp T FR cells and restored their suppressive function in vitro. Polyp T FR cells in eLTs have decreased CLTA-4 and vitamin D receptor expression and impaired capacity to suppress T FH cell–induced immunoglobulin production, which can be reversed by vitamin D treatment in vitro. Studies on the relationship between iodine, vitamin A (VA), and vitamin D (VD) and thyroid function are limited. This study aimed to analyze iodine and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) status and their possible relationships with VA, VD, and other factors in postpartum women. A total of 1,311 mothers (896 lactating and 415 non-lactating) from Hebei, Zhejiang, and Guangxi provinces were included in this study. The urinary iodine concentration (UIC), TSH, VA, and VD were measured. The median UIC of total and lactating participants were 142.00 µg/L and 139.95 µg/L, respectively. The median TSH, VA, and VD levels in all the participants were 1.89 mIU/L, 0.44 µg/mL, and 24.04 ng/mL, respectively. No differences in the UIC were found between lactating and non-lactating mothers. UIC and TSH levels were significantly different among the three provinces. The rural UIC was higher than the urban UIC. Obese mothers had a higher UIC and a higher prevalence of excessive TSH. Higher UICs and TSHs levels were observed in both the VD deficiency and insufficiency groups than in the VD-sufficient group. After adjustment, no linear correlation was observed between UIC and VA/VD. No interaction was found between vitamins A/D and UIC on TSH levels. The relationship between Vitamin D (VD) and periodontitis in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) was unclear. This study was to investigate the relationship between VD and periodontitis in MetS patients. This cross-sectional study collected the data of 2165 MetS patients from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The weighted univariate and multivariable Logistic regression models were applied to identify covariates and evaluate the association between 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) [25(OH)D] 2 + 25(OH)D 3 and periodontitis in patients. Odds ratio (OR) [95% confidence interval (CI)] was effect size. Subgroup analysis was performed in people with or without diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and central obesity groups. In the unadjusted model, compared with patients with 25(OH)D 2 + 25(OH)D 3 < 50 nmol/L, those with 25(OH)D 2 + 25(OH)D 3 ≥ 50 nmol/L might be associated with decreased risk of periodontitis in MetS patients (OR = 0.70, 95% CI: 0.57–0.85). After adjusting for confounders including age, gender, race, education, poverty income ratio (PIR), smoking, diabetes, VD intake and supplement and number of missing teeth, 25(OH)D 2 + 25(OH)D 3 ≥ 50 nmol/L was correlated with reduced risk of periodontitis in MetS patients (OR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.60–0.97). Subgroup analysis revealed that in patients with CVD (OR = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.37–0.98), dyslipidemia (OR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.57–0.97), and patients with central obesity (OR = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.57–0.95), decreased risk of periodontitis was identified in 25(OH)D 2 + 25(OH)D 3 ≥ 50 nmol/L. VD was associated with the risk of periodontitis in patients with MetS, which suggest the importance of VD supplement in patients with MetS and provide a reference for the management of periodontitis in patients with MetS. In this study, we investigated the serum vitamin D level in overweight individuals and its correlation with the incidence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Between May 2020 and May 2021, the Department of Gastroenterology at the People's Hospital of Henan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine treated a total of 321 outpatients and inpatients with NAFLD, who were included in the NAFLD group, while 245 healthy ageand gender-matched individuals were included in the control group. All the data were collected for the relevant indices, including fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, alanine transaminase, and 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25[OH]D. The patients with NAFLD were divided into the normal BMI group, the overweight group, and the obese group, according to the body mass index, and the 25(OH)D levels were compared between the different groups. Spearman's correlation analysis was performed to analyze the correlation between the serum 25(OH)D level and NAFLD. Regarding the serum 25 (OH)D level, it was lower in the NAFLD group than in the control group ([18.36 + 1.41] µg/L vs [22.33 + 2.59] µg/L, t = -5.15, P<0.001), and was lower in the overweight group than in the normal group ([18.09 ± 5.81] µg/L vs [20.60 ± 4.16] µg/L, t = 0.26, P = 0.041). The serum 25(OH)D level was thus negatively correlated with the incidence of NAFLD in overweight individuals (r = 0.625, P<0.05). The impact of hypovitaminosis D in patients undergoing shoulder arthroplasty has yet to be fully determined. Our study aims to assess postoperative outcomes in patients undergoing shoulder arthroplasty, and evaluate the association between preoperative vitamin D level and postoperative outcomes. A retrospective review of patients undergoing hemiarthroplasty, anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty, and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty between 2012 and 2022 at a single institution was performed. Outcomes including readmission, reoperation, mortality, and medical complications, as well as preoperative and postoperative range of motion (ROM), pain scores, and functional outcome scores, were examined. Between September 2012 and September 2022, 576 shoulder arthroplasties were performed at our institution, of which 94 patients had preoperative vitamin D levels recorded; 35.11% were deficient with vitamin D levels under 20 mg/mL, 29.79% were insufficient and had vitamin D levels between 20 and 29 mg/mL, and 35.11% had levels considered sufficient. There was no statistically significant association between vitamin D levels and complications on univariable analysis (P >.05). There was also no statistically significant association between preoperative vitamin D levels and use of cemented implants intraoperatively. Pain scores and ROM were not associated with vitamin D level although ROM approached statistical significance. The association between lower vitamin D levels and worse postoperative outcomes or increased rate of short-term complications was not supported by our study. For patients without osteoporosis, a recorded low vitamin D level at the time of surgery was not associated with an increased risk of postoperative complications or poor postoperative outcome. Statins are the leading lipid-lowering drugs, reducing blood cholesterol by controlling its synthesis. Side effects are linked to the use of statins, in particular statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS). Some data suggest that vitamin D supplementation could reduce SAMS. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential benefits of vitamin D supplementation in a randomized controlled trial. Men (n = 23) and women (n = 15) (50.5 ± 7.7 years [mean ± SD]) in primary cardiovascular prevention, self-reporting or not SAMS, were recruited. Following 2 months of statin withdrawal, patients were randomized to supplementation (vitamin D or placebo). After 1 month of supplementation, statins were reintroduced. Before and 2 months after drug reintroduction, muscle damage (creatine kinase and myoglobin) was measured. Force (F), endurance (E) and power (P) of the leg extensors (ext) and flexors (fle) and handgrip strength (FHG) were also measured with isokinetic and handheld dynamometers, respectively. The Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaire and a visual analog scale (VAS) were administrated to assess participants' self-reported health-related quality of life and SAMS intensity, respectively. Repeated-measures analysis was used to investigate the effects of time, supplementation, and their interaction, according to the presence of SAMS. Despite no change for objective measures, subjective measures worsened after reintroduction of statins, independent of supplementation (VAS, SF-36 mental component score, all p < 0.05). However, no interaction between time and supplementation according to the presence of SAMS was observed for any variables. Vitamin D supplementation does not appear to mitigate SAMS. This meta-analysis aimed to explore correlations between vitamin D and idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM). A comprehensive database search was conducted on 13 October 2020. Mean differences (MDs) and aggregated risk ratios (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to determine the correlation between vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and IIM. Statistical analysis was performed with RevMan 5.4 and Stata15, statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Search revealed five studies with 286 IIM patients and 480 healthy controls. Results with random-effects modeling indicated that serum vitamin D levels were significantly lower in IIM patients than in healthy controls (MD = -13.10 ng/mL; 95% CI: −16.51 to −9.68; p < 0.00001). No differences were found between patients with IIM and other autoimmune diseases on vitamin D levels (MD =-2.65 ng/mL; 95% CI: −11.31–6.01; p = 0.55). In two studies with 185 IIM patients, those with low vitamin D levels exhibited higher creatine kinase levels (MD = 85.20 IU/L; 95% CI: 72.67–97.73; p < 0.00001) than those with normal vitamin D levels. VDD was correlated with an increased risk of IIM (RR = 3.24, 95% CI: 1.81–5.79; p < 0.0001). This meta-analysis showed correlations between vitamin D level and IIM. The results indicated, VDD may be a risk factor for IIM, a determinant of immune dysregulation in IIM, or a consequence of IIM. This article provides an overview of the findings obtained from the Vitamin D Antenatal Asthma Reduction Trial (VDAART) spanning a period of 15 years. The review covers various aspects, including the trial's rationale, study design, and initial intent-to-treat analyses, as well as an explanation of why those analyses did not achieve statistical significance. Additionally, the article delves into the post hoc results obtained from stratified intent-to-treat analyses based on maternal vitamin D baseline levels and genotype-stratified analyses. These results demonstrate a statistically significant reduction in asthma among offspring aged 3 and 6 years when comparing vitamin D supplementation (4400 IU/d) to the standard prenatal multivitamin with vitamin D (400 IU/d). Furthermore, these post hoc analyses found that vitamin D supplementation led to a decrease in total serum IgE levels and improved lung function in children compared to those whose mothers received a placebo alongside the standard prenatal multivitamin with vitamin D. Last, the article concludes with recommendations regarding the optimal dosing of vitamin D for pregnant women to prevent childhood asthma as well as suggestions for future trials in this field. Investigate serum vitamin D (vit D) levels' relation to uterine volume in idiopathic central precocious puberty (ICPP) girls and compare findings with normal peers. Analyzed 278 ICPP cases from January 2017 to September 2022 alongside 239 normally developing girls. Collected clinical data and lab markers and performed subgroup analysis based on vit D levels. Correlation and regression analyses were conducted. The ICPP group exhibited elevated uterine volume and lower serum vit D compared to controls (p<0.05). A weak negative correlation was noted between vit D and uterine volume in ICPP (r=−0.193, p=0.004), and no such correlation in controls (r=−0.073, p=0.319). The ICPP vit D deficiency subgroup displayed higher uterine volume than the insufficiency and sufficiency subgroups (p<0.05). Uterine volume in the insufficiency subgroup exceeded the sufficiency subgroup (p<0.05). After adjusting for confounders, lower vit D is linked to increased ICPP uterine volume (non-standardized regression coefficient β=−25.55, 95 % CI= −46.23, −4.87, p=0.016). A Limited correlation between vit D and uterine volume was seen in girls with normal pubertal timing. We demonstrated a correlation between vit D and uterine volume in ICPP girls, absent in normal peers. ICPP girls often exhibit lower vit D levels and increased uterine volume. • NMOSD patients experienced a decline in serum vitamin D levels. • The proportion of NMOSD patients with vitamin D deficiency significantly increased. • A comprehensive analysis of studies on the relationship between vitamin D and NMOSD. Previous studies have linked vitamin D deficiency with autoimmune diseases, and recent research has found low vitamin D levels in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) patients. We aimed to determine the variances in serum 25(OH)D levels between NMOSD patients and healthy controls. We searched English and Chinese databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CBM, CNKI, WanFang Med, VIP) for observational studies related to serum 25(OH)D levels in NMOSD patients published up to August 24, 2023. We included studies with healthy controls and compared serum 25(OH)D levels between NMOSD patients and controls. We computed the mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for continuous variables to evaluate serum 25(OH)D levels and combined odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs for dichotomized 25(OH)D data. Six papers were selected for meta -analysis, including 794 participants (347 in the NMOSD group and 447 in the healthy control group). Meta-analysis showed significantly lower serum 25(OH)D levels in the NMOSD group (MD: −7.83, 95 % CI: −10.99 to −4.68). The risk of 25(OH)D deficiency was 23.36 times higher in the NMOSD group (OR: 23.36, 95 % CI: 0.85 to 640.76, p = 0.06>0.05), with a 94 % occurrence rate. There was no significant difference in the risk of having sufficient 25(OH)D between the groups (p = 0.12>0.05). NMOSD patients have lower serum 25(OH)D levels than healthy controls. However, the current research results do not provide evidence for a causal relationship between serum 25(OH)D levels and the onset of NMOSD. This article is a systematic review that examines the role of vitamin D in orthodontic tooth movement, external apical root resorption, and bone biomarker expression and remodeling. The review analyzed 19 studies that investigated the correlation between vitamin D levels and various factors related to orthodontic treatment. The findings suggest that local injections of vitamin D may increase the rate of tooth movement, but the varying study designs and protocols make it difficult to draw definitive conclusions. The association between nutrient intake and obesity and coronary problems has received great attention. So, this study aimed to examine the association between vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium intake and obesity and coronary indices. A total of 491 male and female university employees (18–64 years) were randomly included in a cross-sectional study. Blood samples were drawn, and the lipid profile was analyzed. Different anthropometrics were measured. Obesity and coronary indices were calculated based on standard formulas. A 24-h recall was used to measure the average dietary intake of vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium. For the total sample, vitamin D had a significantly weak correlation with the abdominal volume index (AVI) and weight-adjusted waist index (WWI). However, calcium intake had a significant moderate correlation with the AVI and a weak correlation with the conicity index (CI), body roundness index (BRI), body adiposity index (BAI), WWI, lipid accumulation product (LAP), and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP). In males, there was a significant weak correlation between calcium and magnesium intake and the CI, BAI, AVI, WWI, and BRI. Additionally, magnesium intake had a weak correlation with the LAP. In female participants, calcium and magnesium intake had a weak correlation with CI, BAI, AIP, and WWI. Additionally, calcium intake showed a moderate correlation with the AVI and BRI and a weak correlation with the LAP. Magnesium intake had the greatest impact on coronary indices. Calcium intake had the greatest impact on obesity indices. Vitamin D intake had minimal effects on obesity and coronary indices. The association between nutrient intake and obesity and coronary problems has received great attention. Vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium are micronutrients that may affect body fat and body shape. Current evidence on the association of serum vitamin D with mortality in postmenopausal women is limited and inconsistent. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between serum vitamin D and mortality in postmenopausal women. In this study, we used data from the NHANES (2001–2018) and conducted a multivariate Cox regression model to examine associations between serum vitamin D and all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality (CVD), and cancer mortality. In a median follow-up period of 8.3 years, 1905 deaths of all causes were reported, 601 were due to CVD, and 385 deaths were due to cancer. After multivariable adjustment, higher serum vitamin D levels were significantly associated with a reduced risk of death. Compared to participants with lower vitamin D levels (<25 nmol/L), those with higher vitamin D levels (≥75.0 nmol/L) had a lower risk of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio 0.60, 95 % confidence interval 0.49 to 0.74), a lower risk of cardiovascular mortality (0.51, 0.35 to 0.74), and a lower risk of cancer mortality (0.43, 0.28 to 0.67). Moreover, we observed an L-shaped dose–response relationship of serum vitamin D levels with all-cause mortality, and cancer mortality, with this inflexion point being 55.9 nmol/L, and 51.2 nmol/L, respectively. Higher concentrations of serum vitamin D substantially correlated with a reduction in mortality risk from all-cause, CVD, and cancer in postmenopausal women. The effect of increased vitamin D levels on vascular function in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is controversial. This meta-analysis aimed to assess the effect of regulated vitamin D increase on vascular markers in patients with CKD. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase and ClinicalTrials.gov from database inception up until July 21, 2023. We included randomized controlled trials assessing the effects of using vitamin D and its analogues on vascular function in patients with CKD. Fixed-effects and random-effects model analyses were performed using weighted mean difference effects for each trial by heterogeneity (I2) assessment. Primary outcomes encompassed blood flow-mediated dilation (FMD)、pulse wave velocity (PWV) and augmentation index (AIx). From 1964 records we selected 12 trials, 5 (n = 331) on FMD, 8 (n = 626) on PWV and 4 (n = 393) on AIx. Vitamin D and VDRA supplementation failed to significantly improve FMD (WMD 1.68%; 95% CI -0.18 to 3.53; P = 0.08; I2 = 88%)、PWV (WMD -0.41 m/s; 95%CI -0.95 to 0.13; P = 0.14; I2 = 57%)and AIx (WMD -0.53%; 95%CI -1.69 to 0.63; P = 0.37; I2 = 0%). Subgroup analysis revealed that 2 μg paricalcitol significantly improved FMD (WMD 2.09%; 95%CI 1.28 to 2.90; P < 0.00001); I2 = 0%), as did cholecalciferol (WMD 5.49%; 95% CI 4.35 to 6.63; P < 0.00001).
