Lors des analyses toxicologiques post-mortem réalisées à l’occasion d’autopsies médico-légales, la mise en évidence d’une consommation de cannabis est fréquente. Dans ces cas, il peut arriver d’être confronté à des répartitions de concentrations delta 9-tetrahydrocannibol (THC)/(11-Nor-9-carboxy-THC (THC-COOH)/11-hydroxy-THC (11OH-THC) peu cohérentes avec celles rapportées dans les études d’administration contrôlée. Afin d’explorer ce constat issu de la pratique, les concentrations sanguines en THC, 11-OH-THC et THC-COOH ont été comparées entre une population post-mortem (PM) et une population de personnes vivantes (VV).

ABSTRACTSignificant resources and efforts have been devoted, especially in the USA, to develop predictive policing programs. Predictive policing is, at the same time, one of the drivers of the birth, and the ultimate material enactment of, the anticipatory logics that are central to the smart city discourse. Quite surprisingly, however, critical analyses of the smart city have remained divorced from critical criminology and police studies. To fill this gap, this article sets out the first critical, in-depth empirical discussion of Blue CRUSH, a predictive policing program developed in Memphis (TN, USA), where its implementation intersects long-term austerity for urban policy. The article, first, shows that there is no evidence of Blue CRUSH’s capacity to prevent crime, thus adding empirical material to skepticism over the role of predictive policing as a policy solution in the first place. And, second, it argues that, rather than making crime a matter of technological solutions, predictive policing shifts the politics therein – in short, it contributes to the expansion of policing into the field of urban policy at the same time as it disrupts present police work. These takeaways allow to further the critique of the salvific promises implicit in the smart city discourse.

This article takes steps from the birth and consolidation of “homeland” as the central discursive engine of the US national security enterprise; and takes issue with the dominant scholarly interpretation of the geographical and spatial implications of its emergence in terms of the dissolution of space and spatialization in security policy (Bialasiewicz et al., 2007: 416). We adopt a multi-scalar approach to exploring security discourse/practice, comparing the performativity of national and global security with the local practice/discourse of public safety—with empirical focus on the case of Memphis (TN). Our main arguments are that the homeland builds on the same performative elements of the emergence and consolidation of a certain conception of “community”, as it has become dominant in public safety policymaking at the local scale; and that the homeland/community performativity is the expression of a never-ending movement of production of multi-scalar geographies of the “good” and “evil”, made of the coexistence of centrifugal (pushing problems away) and centripetal (incorporating any given outside) dimensions.

Purpose:To investigate the presence of amblyopia risk factors in newborns with congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) and age-matched healthy control subjects.Methods:This retrospective case-control study involved newborns aged 30 to 60 days with CNLDO and age-matched healthy control subjects. Amblyopia risk factors were identified in accordance with the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Vision Screening Committee recommendations. The prevalence of amblyopia risk factors was compared in newborns with CNLDO and age-matched healthy control subjects, newborns with unilateral and bilateral CNLDO, and the affected eye and fellow eye of newborns with unilateral CNLDO.Results:Amblyopia risk factors were found in 18 patients (11.9%) with CNLDO and 19 control subjects (8.7%) (Amblyopia risk factors were found in 18 patients (11.9%) with CNLDO and 19 control subjects (8.7%) (P= .314). Eyes with CNLDO showed a significantly lower spherical equivalent compared to control eyes (2.01 ± 1.21 vs 2.79 ± 1.14 diopters, P< .001). No difference in amblyopia risk factors was found in eyes with unilateral and bilateral CNLDO (11.5% vs 12.1%; P= .908) or in eyes with unilateral CNLDO and fellow eyes (9.8% vs 12.3%; P= .540).Conclusions:CNLDO does not seem to be associated with amblyopia risk factors in newborns. Because anisometropia might develop later on, all patients with CNLDO should be monitored for amblyopia.[[J Pediatr Ophthalmol Strabismus. 2020;57(1):39–43.]

In this article, I contribute to recent debates about the concept of neoliberalism and its use as an explanatory concept, through the analysis of urban planning and regeneration policy in Lisbon amidst crisis and austerity. Suggesting a look at neoliberalization from a threefold perspective—the project, governmentalities, and policymaking—I analyze how current austerity-policy responses to the European economic crisis can be understood as a renewed and coherent deployment of neoliberal stances. The article presents implications for urban planning in Lisbon and thus suggests an exploration of the negotiations and clashes of hegemonic neoliberal governmentalities and policies with the local social and spatial fabric. For this exploration, I select a “deviant” case—the Mouraria neighborhood, a “dense” space in which the consequences of policies diverge sharply from expectations. In conclusion, I suggest that neoliberalization (in times of crisis) should be understood as a coherent project compromised by a set of highly ambiguous governmentalities, which bring about contradictory policymaking at the local level.

The highly effective anticancer agent doxorubicin (Dox) is a frontline drug used to treat a number of cancers. While Dox has a high level of activity against cancer cells, its clinical use is often complicated by dose-limiting cardiotoxicity. While this side effect has been linked to the drug’s direct activity in the mitochondria of cardiac cells, recent studies have shown that these result primarily from downstream effects of nuclear DNA damage. Our lab has developed a mitochondrially targeted derivative of Dox that enables the selective study of toxicity generated by the presence of Dox in the mitochondria of human cells. We demonstrate that mitochondria-targeted doxorubicin (mtDox) lacks any direct nuclear effects in H9c2 rat cardiomyocytes, and that these cells are able to undergo mitochondrial biogenesis. This recovery response compensates for the mitotoxic effects of Dox and prevents cell death in cardiomyocytes. Furthermore, cardiac toxicity was only observed in Dox but not mtDox treated mice. This study supports the hypothesis that mitochondrial damage is not the main source of the cardiotoxic effects of Dox.

The mitochondria within human cells play a major role in a variety of critical processes involved in cell survival and death. An understanding of mitochondrial involvement in various human diseases has generated an appreciable amount of interest in exploring this organelle as a potential drug target. As a result, a number of strategies to probe and combat mitochondria-associated diseases have emerged. Access to mitochondria-specific delivery vectors has allowed the study of biological processes within this intracellular compartment with a heightened level of specificity. In this review, we summarize the features of existing delivery vectors developed for targeting probes and therapeutics to this highly impermeable organelle. We also discuss the major applications of mitochondrial targeting of bioactive molecules, which include the detection and treatment of oxidative damage, combating bacterial infections, and the development of new therapeutic approaches for cancer. Future directions include the assessment of the therapeutic benefit achieved by mitochondrial targeting for treatment of disease in vivo. In addition, the availability of mitochondria-specific chemical probes will allow the elucidation of the details of biological processes that occur within this cellular compartment.

Several families of highly effective anticancer drugs are selectively toxic to cancer cells because they disrupt nucleic acid synthesis in the nucleus. Much less is known, however, about whether interfering with nucleic acid synthesis in the mitochondria would have significant cellular effects. In this study, we explore this with a mitochondrially targeted form of the anticancer drug doxorubicin, which inhibits DNA topoisomerase II, an enzyme that is both in mitochondria and nuclei of human cells. When doxorubicin is attached to a peptide that targets mitochondria, it exhibits significant toxicity. However, when challenged with a cell line that overexpresses a common efflux pump, it does not exhibit the reduced activity of the nuclear-localized parent drug and resists being removed from the cell. These results indicate that targeting drugs to the mitochondria provides a means to limit drug efflux and provide evidence that a mitochondrially targeted DNA topoisomerase poison is active within the organelle.
