The D/H ratio imaging of weakly hydrated minerals prepared as focused ion beam (FIB) sections is developed in order to combine isotopic imaging by nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS) of micrometer-sized grains with other nanoscale imaging techniques, such as transmission electron microscopy. In order to maximize the accuracy, sensitivity, precision, and reproducibility of D/H ratios at the micrometer size, while minimizing the surface contamination at the same time, we explored all instrumental parameters known to influence the measurement of D/H ratios in situ. Optimal conditions were found to be obtained with the use of (i) a Cs+ion source and detection of H–and D–at low mass resolving power, (ii) a primary beam intensity of 100 pA, and (iii) raster sizes in the range of 8–15 μm. Nominally anhydrous minerals were used to evaluate the detection limits and indicate a surface contamination level of ∼200 ppm equivalent H2O under these conditions. With the high primary intensity used here, the dwell time is not a parameter as critical as found in previous studies and a dwell time of 1 ms/px is used to minimize dynamic contamination during analysis. Analysis of FIB sections was found to reduce significantly static contamination due to sample preparation and improved accuracy compared to using polished sections embedded not only in epoxy but in indium as well. On amphiboles, the typical overall uncertainty including reproducibility is ∼20 ‰ on bulk FIB sections and ∼50 ‰ at the 1.5 μm scale using image processing (1σ).

Abstract—We used focused ion beam thin section preparation and scanning transmission electron microscopy (FIB/STEM) to examine the interfacial region between spinel and host melilite for spinel grains in type B1 inclusions from the Allende and Leoville carbonaceous chondrites. Boundary clinopyroxenes decorating spinel surfaces have compositions similar to those of coarser clinopyroxenes from the same region of the inclusion, suggesting little movement after formation. Host melilite displays no anomalous compositions near the interface and late‐stage minerals are not observed, suggesting that boundary pyroxenes did not form by crystallization of residual liquid. Allende spinels display either direct spinel‐melilite contact or an intervening boundary clinopyroxene between the two phases. Spinel‐melilite interfacial regions in a Leoville B1 are more complex, with boundary clinopyroxene, as observed in Allende, but also variable amounts of glass, secondary calcite, perovskite, and an Mg‐, Al‐, OH‐rich and Ca‐, Si‐poor crystalline phase that may be a layered double hydrate. One possible scenario of formation for the glass veins is that open system alteration of melilite produced a porous, hydrated aggregate of Mg‐carpholite or sudoite + aluminous diopside that was shock melted and quenched to a glass. The hydrated crystalline phase we observed may have been a shocked remnant of the precursor phase assemblage, but is more likely to have formed later by alteration of the glass.

An automated platform for low-volume, highthroughput protein crystallization by the sitting drop vapor diffusion has been developed. This platform consists of a novel Society of Biomolecular Screening standard microplate technology, standard automation liquid handling equipment, a software to design customizable, random crystallization buffers, an in-house designed scanner, a crystal recognition software, and Laboratory Information Management Systems. These technologies are designed to eliminate obstacles to the production of protein crystals and to address a number of critical issues faced by crystallography laboratories, namely precision and accuracy, ease of integration and use, speed, and cost.

Abstract—Depending on their velocity, entry angle and mass, micrometeorites suffer different degrees of heating during their deceleration in the Earth's atmosphere, leading, in most cases, to significant textural, mineralogical and chemical modifications. One of these modifications is the formation of a magnetite shell around most micrometeorites, which until now could not be reproduced, neither theoretically nor experimentally. The present study was designed to better understand the entry heating effects on micrometeorites and especially the formation of the magnetite shell. Fragments of the Murchison and Orgueil meteorites were used as analogue material in flash‐heating experiments performed in a high‐temperature furnace; effects of temperature, heating duration, and oxygen fugacity were investigated.

The anatomy and etiology of cheiralgia paresthetica are discussed in the light of a case of this syndrome in a diabetic. The variability of the area affected can be ascribed to anatomical variants in the innervation of the hand (“ulnar intervention” in the radial sensory distribution). In patients in whom mechanical causes have been excluded diabetes mellitus should be considered as a possible cause.
