Missing data is a common problem in epidemiological studies. The problems associated with analysing data with missing information have received little attention in child maltreatment research. The Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect was analysed to identify missing information and investigate patterns of its occurrence. It was clear that the data were not missing at random. Discussions for improvement of data collection tools and implications for mental health promotion are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
