Lung nodules are a diagnostic challenge, with an estimated yearly incidence of 1.6 million in the United States. This study evaluated the accuracy of an integrated proteomic classifier in identifying benign nodules in patients with a pretest probability of cancer (pCA) ≤ 50%.

Neuroimaging evidence suggests that human Brodmann area 5 (BA5) within the superior parietal lobule contributes to movement planning. However, a causal role for the contribution of BA5 to preparatory processes has yet to be reported. We used paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation to investigate the influence of human BA5 on corticospinal excitability during movement preparation in the context of a GO/NO-GO task. Functional connectivity between BA5 and the ipsilateral primary motor cortex (M1) was investigated by probing corticospinal output to the first dorsal interosseous muscle of the right hand. Results indicate that BA5 influences M1 during movement preparation in a task-specific manner: motor-evoked potentials are suppressed in the context of a NO-GO versus GO task. These findings provide evidence that human BA5 participates in movement preparation and differentiates between whether a movement is withheld or executed.

AbstractSubstantive cross-racial interaction on college campuses has been known to have positive effects on student learning and development (Chang, Astin, & Kim, 2004). However, literature shows that students from different minoritized racial groups often remain separated from majority White groups, such as fraternities, thus prohibiting each group to realize the benefits such interaction could offer (Sidanius, Laar, Levin, & Sinclair, 2004). Utilizing focus group methods, this study investigated the racial attitudes of 20 senior, White, Interfraternity Council men in order to better show how the fraternity culture and experience influence the racial attitudes of members. This study found four themes that help illuminate how racist attitudes are formed and reproduced in these organizations. The implications of this study are useful for student affairs professionals concerned with the ways in which racial dynamics on predominantly White campuses affect the campus climate for diversity and the character development of students.

A new interpositional elastomeric cap was developed and used for perichondrioplasty in six rheumatoid metacarpophalangeal joints. Adequate cartilage formation occurred, and the joint contours were more normal than those achieved by previous methods.

We report on results of an experiment to study the reaction p-p ? p- p+ in the incident pion momentum region between 295 and 450 MeV/c. A departure from phase space was observed in invariant-mass spectra and angular distributions which cannot be explained with ? and ? resonance production. It indicates aI=0,JP = 0+ p- p+ final-state interaction.

Splicing of the ribosomal RNA precursor of Tetrahymena is an autocatalytic reaction, requiring no enzyme or other protein in vitro. The structure of the intervening sequence (IVS) appears to direct the cleavage/ligation reactions involved in pre-rRNA splicing and IVS cyclization. We have probed this structure by treating the linear excised IVS RNA under nondenaturing conditions with various single- and double-strand-specific nucleases and then mapping the cleavage sites by using sequencing gel electrophoresis. A computer program was then used to predict the lowest-free-energy secondary structure consistent with the nuclease cleavage data. The resulting structure is appealing in that the ends of the IVS are in proximity; thus, the IVS can help align the adjacent coding regions (exons) for ligation, and IVS cyclization can occur. The Tetrahymena IVS has several sequences in common with those of fungal mitochondrial mRNA and rRNA IVSs, sequences that by genetic analysis are known to be important cis-acting elements for splicing of the mitochondrial RNAs. In the predicted structure of the Tetrahymena IVS, these sequences interact in a pairwise manner similar to that postulated for the mitochondrial IVSs. These findings suggest a common origin of some nuclear and mitochondrial introns and common elements in the mechanism of their splicing.

The reaction π+p→π+π+n was studied in the vicinity of the reaction threshold at ten incident pion beam momenta from 297 MeV/c to 480 MeV/c. From data angular distributions, invariant mass spectra and integrated cross-sections were deduced. The chiral symmetry breaking parameter as determined by this reaction equals to ξ=1.56±0.26±0.39, where the first error is experimental, while the latter reflects the uncertainty in the ansatz used in the extrapolation to the reaction threshold. A comparison with the other reaction channels of the reaction πp→ππN indicates that a single parameter (ξ) is not sufficient to describe low energy ππ interactions.

Three-dimensional (3D) concentrators for photomultipliers with curved photocathodes have been designed by taking the figures of revolution of ideal two-dimensional (2D) concentrators that are constructed from the 2D profiles of the photocathodes. Two new arguments are presented as to why these 3D concentrators cannot quite reach the maximum concentration factor allowed by the conservation of phase space. Improvements in performance have been obtained by optimizing the collection of off-axis rays and filling the concentrator with a dielectric of suitable refractive index. The complicated optical behavior of the photocathode does not affect concentrator performance.

Patients with head and neck cancer were treated with synchronous radiotherapy and chemotherapy (vincristine, bleomycin and methotrexate). Before treatment, mucositis was absent and low amounts of prostaglandin-like material were extracted from peripheral plasma. As treatment proceeded mucositis occurred, and its degree correlated with the amount of prostaglandin-like material extracted from the plasma. Some patients were given moderate doses of drugs which inhibit prostaglandin synthesis, but mucositis still occurred.

Tumour-associated prostaglandin-like material, assessed by bioassay, has been examined in 37 patients with primary and metastatic squamous carcinomas of the head and neck, previously treated by radiotherapy and chemotherapy followed by radical surgery. High amounts of prostaglandin-like material were extracted from tumours excised within 3 months of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. These amounts correlated with necrosis, inflammation and fibrosis, but not with tumour site, size or degree of differentiation. Most of the prostaglandins formed by these treated tumours thus seem to be associated with host stromal and inflammatory cells, rather than the neoplastic cells. The possible roles of prostaglandins in facilitating the spread of squamous carcinomas are discussed.

A study of β-γ and γ-γ coincidences associated with the β-decay of 12B has been made in order to analyse the β-spectrum. It is concluded that, relative to the transition to the ground state of l2C, (1·7 ± 0·4)% of the β-transitions are to the 4·43 mev excited state, and ≤(0·0 ± 0·2)% to the 7·66 mev state. A technique of comparison between 12B and 8Li was used which incidentally gave a new upper limit of ≤(0·2±0·1)% for γ-radiation following the 8Li decay.

A prototype device called the Universal Medical Cooler, or “Limb bin”, has been developed to provide a controlled hypothermic environment for the preservation of amputated tissues prior to replantation. Under experimental conditions effective hypothermia of a simulated replant specimen was achieved with a satisfactory cooling rate. The Universal Medical Cooler is compact and easy to handle and allows safe and effective hypothermic preservation of amputated tissues in transit. It is effective for upwards of 7 h, therefore allowing transport from distant geographical locations.

FLUCTUATIONS of intensity, as a function of time, from an extended radio (or optical) source arise from the random phase relation between the many oscillators generating the signal. In a similar way fluctuations of a nuclear reaction cross-section1, as a function of energy, arise from the random (energy) phase of the amplitudes of the many compound nucleus resonances which participate in the reaction. The connexion between these two phenomena can be seen most clearly by considering the cross-correlation of intensity fluctuations observed by two receivers (or two counters in the nuclear case).
