Data are reported to demonstrate feasibility for tracing readings from various instruments that measure cotton color to spectrophotometer readings at the US National Institute for Standards and Testing or other labs. The article presents developments in instrument methods used for the commercial determination of leaf grade in ginned cotton. It states that the developed methods are accurate, precise, repeatable and reliable enough to replace the human classer in commercial examination of trash. It includes the analysis of data from 249 samples that were tested for color and trash content by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Based on the data that were analyzed, it suggests that it presented significant progress in developing the technology needed to determine the classer leaf grade by instruments.

The article presents a progress report on the development of instrument methods on the determination of leaf grade in ginned cotton from samples that were tested for color and trash content by the Agricultural Marketing Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Memphis, Tennessee. 2429 samples of leaf grade were classified into 3 different classers and tested on a high volume instrument and two IsoTesters®. The report has suggested that substantial progress has been made in the development of the technology necessary to determine the classer leaf grade by rapid and reliable measuring instruments.

IsoTester® provides modern, image-based, internet-ready technology for measurement of lint Color + Trash. Performance results for 2 standard IsoTesters, owned by USDA/AMS/Memphis, will be seen to be comparable in accuracy and superior in precision to HVI methods. These results are for conventional data products, lint Rd & +b and trash particle Count & %Area. IsoTester Leaf Grade measurements, a new data product based using charts of C & %A, will be seen to similarly track Human Classers in accuracy and precision.
